Speaker 2 (00:22):
LEA give this you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Greetings and welcome inside our two of The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. We are live
from the Tirak dot com studios. Thirty seconds left to
go in regulation and it's the Minnesota Timberrels with a
one oh eight one oh six lead over the Dallas Mavericks.
They have the basketball with a chance to get this
(00:52):
series back to even and uh, I'll tell you what
this is now the second bad pass and turn on
by Anthony Edwards in the last minute. This is I'm
telling you Anthony Edwards has really been bad. And no,
Anthony Edwards has been bad. He has now turned the
ball over a couple of times. Bad pass that got
(01:15):
knocked out of McDaniel's hands, which upon further review it
looked like maybe Kyrie Irving should have been called for
a foul because all he did was get McDaniel's hand.
But a bad pass by Anthony Edwards on an offensive
set about fifteen seconds ago, and the turnover goes to
the Dallas.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Mavericks who traveled too.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah, and now you have the second time down Edwards
with the ball, the shot clock ticking down, and he
just throws the ball out of bounds when he's double
teamed the top of the key, not getting a shot,
not getting open, not getting the ball to a teammate.
He throws the ball into the stands with twelve seconds left.
So now Dallas has a chance to tie the game
or send it to overtime with a bucket. Here again
(01:58):
one six time and on the floor, twelve and a
half seconds left to.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Go, looking for Conley.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Just spot up one way he went, the other ball
goes out of bounds and Edward's got bailed out a
few possessions even prior to the challenge where it was
ruled a foul, but it was one where he sailed
it and there was just enough contact.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
To draw a file there.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
So it's uh, I like the aggressiveness, but he is
erratic in terms of trying to find the open man.
It's good close out by by Dallas on the defensive
end though, keeping him keeping the mind moving a little
faster than the body can, you know.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
And that's the thing is that looking at looking at
how this plays out, is that, yes, Dallas is a
really good defensive team. And it seemed like Anthony Edwards
they had no answer for what was gonna happen there,
Like Edwards is going to try to make something happen
and then instead they wind up having no cohesion on
that possession and it's a turnover. So now Dallas gets
(02:57):
the ball back with twelve seconds left, and what happens.
Luka Doncic's is guarded by one person. Luca Dongits is
single guarded by Gobart out on the perimeter. Go Bear
is running around like a lunatic. Of course, Luca steps back,
hits a three, screams in Rudy Gobert's face. Well, Rudy
Gobert has had his back turn, but Doncic is screaming
(03:19):
at him. And now it's a one point lead for
the Mavericks with three seconds left to go.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
Time out on the floor.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
The defensive Player of the Year gets worked by Luca
and now it's a one point lead.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
For the matter, Gundy.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Kept cutting it for you know, looking for Luca to
drive to try to take it to the hoop, and
instead gets him scrambling. I suppose you could probably insert
your favorite cartoon here, road runner, Kye Wiley coyote kind
of thing. For the way go Beart's legs were moving.
He really got his feet tangled up on him on
(03:56):
that step back. And if we could read Luca's lip here,
none of it FCC compliant.
Speaker 6 (04:03):
No no, no, no, no, no.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
Defensive player blankety blank bla black Yeah.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
Uh yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
That was not not at all how you expected that
to go, right, Not at all. I mean, I'm saying, okay, well,
they're gonna do something to get out on Luca right
and make him give up the ball. They're gonna make
him give up the ball, right, or they think, no,
Rudy Gobart is enough on him.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
Obviously that's not the case.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
I mean I really thought, okay, well, go Bear is
on him, great, but they're gonna force him to give
up the ball, and instead he's allowed to just take
a couple of dribbles hit the step back give Dallas
the one point lead with three seconds left to go.
Now Minnesota calls a time out to advance the basketball.
Uh the inbounds pass goes to Anthony Edwards. He had
a chance to put up a three. He does not,
(04:49):
And it's not like he had guys all over him.
Speaker 6 (04:52):
Anthony Edwards could have picked, could have put up.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
A three, but instead it's a hot dish for three
and instead it goes I'm trying to see. I think
he got it over to nas Reed, who has to
put up a really fast three does not go. Dallas
wins one oh nine, one o eight. They take a
two games to none lead. Just an implosion by the
(05:15):
Minnesota Timberwolves, who.
Speaker 6 (05:17):
Led this game by five. They had a five point lead.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
They were it was one o eight, one oh three
with less than a minute and half left to go,
and instead they wind up losing, with the Mavericks going
on a six to zero run to finish.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
The game one o nine, one o eight. They go home.
Now the t Wolves lose their first two games at home.
Speaker 5 (05:37):
You want to talk about spicy Edwards not looking to
create a shot at all. I played a little hot
potato to get the ball out of his hands.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
I mean, I mean really agreed.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
Obviously it had been fantastic all night, so uh in
terms of shooting a three pointer, that's the guy I
guess I wanted in his hands. But no drive, no
attempt to uh to get to the lane, and just
settling far beyond the arc.
Speaker 6 (06:03):
Does it?
Speaker 1 (06:03):
I mean, Anthony Edwards had a chance to take a
dribble for a shot, but it looked like he wanted
absolutely no part of that, like it was a very
I got it. I'm dribbling. Yeah, I don't like it.
I'm dishing over to nas Reed.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Now.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
I get nas Reed has made some threes and that's fine,
but you get it to him so late.
Speaker 6 (06:20):
He's got to put up a rushed shot like you
took a dribble, Like.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
If you got it right away on over to nas Reed,
he's got time to grab it, stop it and sit
and hit it. Okay, I get it, But now it
looked like he did not want any part of that shot.
Speaker 6 (06:32):
And I'm gonna get it to nas Reed.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Who oh, by the way, get something up really fast
with one second left on the clock, Like he wanted
absolutely no part of that. And for a guy who's
Michael Jordan, right, Michael, let's anoint him? Were Mac Jones
and him? Look what happened to Mac Jones? What happened
to Mac Jones? Look where he is now?
Speaker 6 (06:49):
This is what's happening to Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
This is about as bad a final minute that a
star player could have because I really two turn basically
two turnovers and no interest in taking the last shot. Wow, man,
that's and that's gonna spell doom for Minnesota.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
Now this one hurts, right, eighteen point lead and you
got chased down. You know a lot of the breakdown
yesterday we did, you know, was with the Pacers in
the final minutes after Halliburton got hurt, kind of deciding, hey,
you know, we'll live to fight another day. And that's it, Mavericks,
no quit, just kept chasing. Can get a big second half,
(07:27):
particularly fourth quarter. Kyrie Irving finishes with twenty and Luca
with a dagger.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
I mean that shot over go Bear.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Is gonna be like that becomes his new highlight, like
number one moment in his career. The way he crossed
him up and really left him baffled. But for Anthony Edwards,
you can't have a worse sequence than what is at
the final forty eight seconds of regulation here with the
number of miscues and just decision making execution, like all
(08:04):
of it comes down to the moment.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Got too big, Mike, say that again? You know whose
fault this is?
Speaker 6 (08:11):
Right? Oh I'm afraid to ask, Oh boy, whose fault
is it? Frostburg?
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Well, it's your fault, Jason. You said, let's make nas
read happen, and then what happens?
Speaker 6 (08:24):
Yeah, no, you're right.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
I mean, if I'm Scott Shapiro, I'm kicking your ass.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Could be the end of you.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Oh man, I would stay away from texting our boss
Scott Shapiro.
Speaker 6 (08:37):
I would not text him after that. Do not do not.
I you know, here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
As mad as I would ever get at you guys,
and there's lots of times, I would never like steal
your phones and text him from your phone, I would
never do that, Like that's something.
Speaker 6 (08:51):
Oh No, I wouldn't do that, you kidding?
Speaker 1 (08:53):
No, no, no, If you could get into my not
after this, dude, we already have your credit card number
and everything else we need.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
I can get in your phone anytime I want to. Yeah,
I know, I'm being explored on the dark web because
of you.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
If you want to date with Harmon.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Listen, I know Harmon, I know your password is cats. Okay,
so it's fine. How easy was that to guess it?
I mean, I know, come.
Speaker 7 (09:16):
On, man, but but look look see yeah, now know
Harmon's like, no, no, gotta change it from cats. Okay, great,
he's going.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
It's all a tributary grande character of victorious.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
But you think about this last minute for the Wolves
as they gave this game away, right, not just the
Edwards plays, right, the two turnovers and the no interest
from the final shot, which come on, man, are you
a great player or not?
Speaker 6 (09:52):
Do you want to take the shot or not?
Speaker 1 (09:55):
I still can't get over the the single, the one
on one not making Luca give up the ball, like like, okay,
we have Rudy Gobert match one on one on Luka Doncic.
And the thing is is that you know the guy
can step back and hit a three.
Speaker 6 (10:09):
And that's why I didn't.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
I didn't like the defensive strategy because go beart can
only go so far or Luca's gonna get around him
and get to the who because the threat of him
taking a three is huge. If he wasn't a three
point shooter, I would say, Okay, great, you got Gobert
out there.
Speaker 6 (10:23):
It's awesome.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
But Luca is big enough to get around him and
get a shot if he gets too close. And that's
what I thought. They're gonna make him give up the ball.
Even if you have make him give the ball to Kyrie.
You're not gonna let Luca take a shot one on what. Nope,
that's exactly what they're gonna do. Minnesota is gonna look
at the end of this game, the final minute and go, wow,
we're just giving away our chance to win an NBA time.
We may have given that away in the last minute
(10:45):
of this game. Instead of tying the series up at
one apiece, which we should have done, we have given
that away to the Mavericks. And now I gotta watch
Luca and Kyrie in the NBA Finals, and it's gonna
be Kyrie against the Celtics, and the story lines there
and it's Tatum and it's got Luca, and it's Mark
been the saying look where we are. And suddenly all
the old Mavericks are getting interviewed, and Dirk is doing
an interview with Jason kidd and and everybody else. Oh,
(11:07):
it's good what we got to You have to watch
because you completely gacked away this final minute of this game.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
Yeah, looking at the watching this replay over and over right,
the sequence of the Lucas shot and then the final
three seconds after the time out, ball comes into Edwards
and he goes he takes one dribble, the double starts
come over, so he gets it over to read. Who's
just it's got no time. I mean, it's that that
(11:34):
is the definition of a catch and shoot. Uh situation.
But you know, a shot. He he he's got a
knock down and for Edwards, I'll kill him to a point.
The more I the more I look at it and
see the second man collapsing to him, Uh, he's not
gonna thread the needle into the lane because Luca is
also floating back towards the free throw line there. But yeah,
(11:57):
just a disaster to give this game away. Yeah, I
mean it wasn't terribly well executed. I mean, we talked
about it coming out of the the end of the
first half. It's not like they were shooting the lights out,
but they you know, they were fairly efficient from three
point range, and they had the slight rebounding edge, and
to that point, Kyrie had not been activated. Man, when
(12:19):
we first started on air, what did he have? Five
points and two assists and he was virtually invisible and
then he finishes with a flourish Oh.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Man, I'll tell I mean, I get that you have
I get that you have the defensive player.
Speaker 6 (12:34):
They're out there. I understand that. I get that. But
if you're talking.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
About one on one Luca and Rudy Gobert, who are
you giving that advantage to Luca? You're giving the advantage
to Look, especially because he can hit a three. And
I I mean, I mean, I feel like the last
minute they had no composure. They had no idea, They
had no idea what they wanted to do offensively. They
ran into trouble, they had they forced turnovers. It was
just they were not, as you said, they were not
(13:00):
ready for the moment. They were not ready to hold
on to a five point lead with a minute and
a half left to go. I mean, really, this is
Anthony Edwards. It's it's the it's the decision to have
Rudy Gobert one on one on Luka Doncic. It's it's
just Wow, How did this happen so fast to this
team that has looked so good and so poison and
and wise beyond their years earlier in the playoffs. Right now,
(13:21):
the Nuggets just sitting here going they couldn't do this
against us?
Speaker 6 (13:23):
Really, I mean they could, they couldn't do this against us.
We had we had to.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
Get the best they could with two guys on the
ball every time we went down the floor. And this
is this is what we had going on. I mean,
the Timberwolves defense would put two guys on the ball.
I don't I don't get it. I don't get any
of those things. The last minute, Wow, what a thriller
we had. With the Mavericks now up two games to none.
Our coverage of this game is just beginning. Got a
(13:46):
special guest coming up next to break down the Denver
or the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
Sorry, Dendra, I put you in there.
Speaker 1 (13:52):

over Minnesota, it's a two games to none lead in

Joe Brills at Tonic Things, Who set Dallas is tick
of the Lead?
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Kevin Harland on TNT with the call the shot of
Luka Doncic's career so far, because it has his team
two games away from their first NBA Finals. They come
from behind and absolute meltdown by the Timberwolves in the
final minute, a five point lead disappears, the Mavericks win it.
Speaker 6 (15:35):
One oh nine to one O eight, and again Kevin
Harlan TNT on the call. What to make of this?
Speaker 1 (15:40):
What to make of the decisions the t Wolves made
in the last minute and the gift they gave to
the Mavericks? Nobody better to talk to you right now
on the hot line, longtime NBA insider NBA on NBC,
hence the round ball rock front of the show, Kurt Healing, Kurt?
Speaker 6 (15:56):
What's happening? Bud?
Speaker 11 (15:56):
How are you?
Speaker 6 (15:57):
Man?
Speaker 11 (15:58):
Oh? It's so much fun when these games are on,
isn't it?
Speaker 10 (16:00):
Like?
Speaker 11 (16:00):
This is this series? I only wish it wasn't too,
oh because I wanted to go a long time.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Well, first, before we get to that, I want to say,
are you taking Barkley's place?
Speaker 11 (16:10):
Like?
Speaker 6 (16:10):
Can you give us that? Is that happening? Is that
gonna happen when the NBA goes to NBC.
Speaker 11 (16:15):
I can put on a few pounds and try to
take them. Nah, you know, I gotta say I I
will tell you that when NBC is making two point
five billion dollar investment decisions, they don't really go, Hey,
what's our basketball writer thinks? So I'm on the outside
of the.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
All right, well, let's find out what you think about
what we saw in the last minute, because obviously it
looked like the Timberwolves are going to win their up
by five or the minute a half left to go. Yes,
Kyrie hits a three, and then we saw some turnovers
by Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
But let's start with a big shot.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Let's start with Luka Doncic and the three that gives
the Mavericks the lead they wind up winning. I was
really surprised. Hey, I get that Rudy Gobert is a
defensive player the year, but that's not a strength out
on the perimeter on Luca. He's gonna be able to
get the three. I can't believe they didn't make him
give the ball up in the final side. Makes it
even if it's Kyrie, somebody else besides Luca take that shot.
Speaker 6 (17:13):
At the end.
Speaker 11 (17:14):
Yeah, they've had more success bulletzing him than switching like that.
And the other thing is, and I know they brought
this up on the broadcast. I don't know that I
have Rudy out there. They Luca had been hunting Rudy
because that's a good matchup for him. Cat's better not
He's like, there's just options. You've got Kyle Anderson, who's
(17:36):
not exactly the fastest guy, but Rudy's really when you
get to drop him, you know, in a drop coverage situation,
but when you can bring him up to the level
of ball and make him defend shooters like that, it's
just not what he does. He's gotten better, but it's
just not what he does. Well. Luca wanted the match up,
he got it and got to a spot and nailed it.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
Kurt not to mention the fact that earlier in the game,
Rudy Gobert gave him one of those shots to the
rib cage coming off the road w W style that
seemed to wake Luca up, because he played a much
better and cleaner game the rest of the way.
Speaker 11 (18:11):
Yeah, maybe don't. You wouldn't don't make him angry. You
wouldn't like him when he's angry.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
Nicely done.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
Go back to the old NBC vehicle of the Incredible
Hulk right there. Nicely done. Because you can read.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Yeah, it is a long time ago, Kurt, you're talking
about the late seventies. But but you read Luca's lips,
you can't blank and guard me. He's screaming at the
back of Rudy Gobert after he hits that.
Speaker 6 (18:37):
Three, and.
Speaker 11 (18:40):
You needed somebody quicker or more physical who could not
you know, he wants to get to the step back
three and you take that away and you let him
drive the lane, and it's you know, it's a tie
game instead of a he gets the two and it's
a tie game and that's less of a problem. So
it was some really, Like I said, I'm a little
(19:01):
surprised they left Rudy out there because the second he
was out there, that was going to be Luca's target.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Kurt Heel and our guest, the Jason Smizer with Mike Carmon,
live from the tirerack dot Com studios. All right, so
from Luca, let's go to Anthony Edwards, who I think
I think the Michael Jordan comparisons are gonna calm down
a little bit. You look final you look at the
final minute that he had. He had the the bad
pass that turned into the McDaniel's turnover because it was
a bad pass. He could could barely get his hands
(19:29):
on it, gets knocked out of his hands, goes out
of bounds, turns it over to the Mavericks. Then he
throws the ball out of bounds with twelve seconds left,
and then with three seconds left, he takes a dribble
and dishes it over to nas Reed, who has to
get a hurried three instead of you know, hey, pass
it over with if you don't not going to take
the shot, pass it over the couple of seconds left.
Let nas Red gather himself. He hit five already in
(19:52):
the game. But I watched this end of this game
and watched Anthony Edwards basically two turnovers and with the
basketball three times in the final minute not take a shot.
It's just stunning that that was the final minute that
he had in this game.
Speaker 11 (20:07):
I think two things. A As this is true of Edwards,
but I think it's true of the Timberwolves just because
they haven't been here before. They're just not used to
the stage. They're not ready for the moment because they
just haven't done it before. And Edwards is gassed. And
this was the second game in a row where mean, look,
(20:28):
they just came off a seven game series. It's every
other night. This is I think what goes under thought
about is, you know, since the NBA started allowing more
physical play, and they do that in the playoffs anyway,
but I think we all know, you know, starting in February,
they kind of let the game get more physical. The
playoffs have certainly been that way. That just takes more
(20:48):
out of you, right Like anything physical like that, it's
just it takes more out of you. And he's he's
made tired decisions in the last minutes of games right now,
and I think as a team, they've got some work
to do to figure out how to be better in
those moments.
Speaker 5 (21:06):
Wow, he's still a couple of months shy of turning
twenty three, and we're using the tired thing. Michael Jordan
was never tired, He was sick.
Speaker 11 (21:18):
I just you know, he just the decisions he's making
look that way to me. I don't think you know,
He's stuff just doesn't seem to be don't clicking.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
And they're also just process.
Speaker 11 (21:28):
Yeah, they haven't been there, they haven't been in these moments,
and that you get tight and Luca, Luca and the Mavericks. Yeah,
Kyrie's there and it's new, but Tyree's sending a couple
of big moments. Guys, he hit a couple of shots,
and as a team, a lot of these guys have
been there. There's just a much with Luca. There's just
(21:48):
a calmer and they're just calmer in those moments. There's, Hey,
Luca's gonna get the ball, get the match if he
wants to get to his shot on that step back
and not be rushed into something he doesn't want to do.
Speaker 5 (21:58):
I guess the recency for me, Kurt, of what they
did to Denver would have played a little more into
how the game finishes, Right, you chase them down in
a closeout down twenty and now you're at eighteen in
this in exactly the same kind of circumstance to go
and at least you know, draw even on the home court,
(22:21):
and then in the final minutes like you're not able
to keep the composer.
Speaker 4 (22:24):
Just kind of an interesting the Hunter versus Hunt did.
Speaker 11 (22:29):
Yeah, Actually, that's a really good point that they they
really were. I mean, they were the more poised team
and they were the fresher team and less hired team
in the last round when when Denver, I think Denver
was playing four guys, they were re wiped by the end,
and it showed. And and maybe I wonder if they
(22:53):
feel a little more comfortable now they're down to some
pressures off there out of there on the road. I
wonder if they I wonder if they played better in
Game three, just out of that home environment.
Speaker 1 (23:03):
Who's got the better chance coming down to is it
Minnesota on the road or in the Pacers at home?
Speaker 11 (23:10):
Minnesota?
Speaker 6 (23:10):
Dude?
Speaker 7 (23:14):
I know, I know, I know.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Anytime Kurt Healing says dude, I know, I know. How Seriously,
what is it, dude, Dude, I got it now you.
Speaker 11 (23:23):
Can now you can tell I was raised in southern California.
If you're in southern California, you know, dude, is like
like certain curse words. It is literally every part of speech.
It's not even it's not even a thing. Sometimes it's
just like you miss a stop.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Like you're like, dude, Long Beach is fine, as Kurt Healing,
our guests here on Fox Sports Radio. So give me
your percentage, give me a percentage change. There's no chance
for the Pacers. Give me a percentage chance. You think
the Wolves can still come back and not even not
even win the series. Tie it at to two percentage.
They can tie it to too too. Hmmm, because we've
(24:02):
seen him win.
Speaker 11 (24:02):
Twenty five before, right, I say, I was gonna say
T five. You know, actually I'll make it like thirty.
Like I think that there's a chance that they start
to get They figured that these haven't been well out games.
In fact, they've led both games. I was just looking
this up. They've led both games with two minutes and
ten seconds to go, and they just again haven't been
able to close it out. But that is something that
(24:25):
can They're closer Indiana is I don't think, on the
same talent level. But more importantly, dude, again, if Haliburton,
if Haliburton's not there, I mean we don't know his status,
but if he if he's either not playing or frankly
just slowed, they're done right. They're just I mean, we
(24:49):
all Connelly's kind.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
Of a drop off.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
I mean, they had their their chance in game one
and they let them off the hook. Yeah that way right,
there was your home game to steal from the Celtics.
Speaker 11 (25:00):
It was exactly that didn't you didn't when you were watching,
that didn't you think that you're like other toasts. Now,
that was the game that was, yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
And then it was a comedy of errors coaching wise,
and playmaking and decision making in the final ten seconds
of regulation. That really is you know, Jason's enumerating all
of the Edwards stuff here. He's one guy. You could
pass the blame pie to a lot of guys in
that game.
Speaker 6 (25:24):
One.
Speaker 11 (25:24):
Oh, they they that was painful to watch. Yeah, and
I did it again. I think it was just one
of those where you're like, I was surprised they stayed
as close as they did. That was the kind of
demoralizing game where I thought they'd get crushed by more
than when it ended up being sixteen or seventeen in
the second game, I thought it would be worse than that.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
You know, Kurt LATSI let me go with this because
I feel like, you know, I've been I've been, you know,
pounding on the t wolves the last few minutes.
Speaker 6 (25:47):
And look they did give this game away. But no, no, no,
I have no dog in this fight.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
It's not like they're playing the next I mean, come on,
but you called Anthony Edwards mac Jones, I will say, well,
they're mac Jones and and you see what's happened when
you mac Jones, somebody he turns into mac Jones. I
will say this on the McDaniels turnover, the first one,
where was the bad pass by Anthony Edwards? I mean
you can you go back and look at that and see, yes,
(26:11):
it goes out and bounce off McDaniel's. But oh, Kyrie
fouls him, I mean hens. I mean that all needs
to be reviewable. It can't just be well, it was
a foul, but it was all. I mean that needs
to be reviewable too.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
Doesn't it.
Speaker 11 (26:23):
You and I are on the same page there along
with I think Stan on the is Sandon Gundy on
the on the broadcast. If you're going to open up that, can,
you know, open up that can then you get everything
inside right? Like to me, it's like if you once
you review that and you can call it a foul
if it was a foul, because what you end up
with is a technically correct call. That isn't justice, that
(26:47):
isn't fair because that should have been a foul.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
You can follow on Twitter at Basketball Talk that is,
at Basketball Talk NBA, at NBC insider Kurt Healing if
you see him in long beach. He will say hi
to you, and he will call you dude. Thanks a bunch, man.
We'll talk to you next week. We'll have more NBA
in the way.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Take holiday weekend. Dude, dude, dude.
Speaker 5 (27:14):
As soon as you asked the question, I'm like, Okay,
how's he going to diplomatically respond to this?
Speaker 4 (27:18):
And he just went straight to dude.
Speaker 6 (27:20):
Dude, dude, Well, I gotta I gotta ask the question, right.
Speaker 5 (27:23):
I loved it though, you laid it up, and I'm like,
all right, let's see how he's gonna take this one.
Speaker 6 (27:31):
The Pacers.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
But look, you're also talking about one team that is
a better team, but they're going on the road, and yes,
we've seen them. They won three games on the road
in the last run against the defending jamp So okay.
But you're also talking about one team going home for
two games.
Speaker 6 (27:44):
So okay. I got it. But you know, dude, get
I said, Okay, he gave me. Dude. This means the
answer is not the Pacers, you think.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
At a party. At a party, he says, I'm the dude.
Speaker 4 (27:55):
He could be.
Speaker 6 (27:57):
I'm the dude. He's he's laying on the out in
the middle of the floor.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Listening to bowling the semifinals on his on his walk, Man,
you just get pressing the button.
Speaker 5 (28:05):
Listening little earl Anthony versus Mark Roth. Let's go come on,
shakle on the.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
Call exit out about a Fresco exit swollen down the
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carbon Time
how to find out what's trending in the wide world
of sports. For man, who I once saw bowl of
turkey in a round of bowling. It's step the singer
with what's trending?
Speaker 12 (28:26):
You mean an actual turkey, not three strikes?
Speaker 6 (28:28):
Yeah, no, I met you had a frozen turkey and
you rolled it down and it knocked over the pins.
Speaker 12 (28:32):
They do slide.
Speaker 10 (28:32):
Oh.
Speaker 12 (28:33):
You know in Orange County years ago, guys who worked
in grocery stores in the late night shift, you should
actually take frozen turkeys and play bowling.
Speaker 6 (28:41):
Set up some cans down the aisles.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
No customers, no, no.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
They would They wouldn't allow us in the frozen frozen
food isle.
Speaker 6 (28:50):
Was terrible. Man, I hated the frozen food aslet whoa.
Speaker 12 (28:53):
We had such a finish in the NBA West Finals
Game two at Minnesota. We'll hear it from the MAVs
Radio Network moment. But Dallas is up two games to
none and Game three is at Dallas on Sunday night.
Game four will be at Dallas on Tuesday night. If
the series is still going, it'll be back at Minnesota
for Game five on Thursday evening. But Minnesota at home
(29:14):
was up by five, which just over a minute to
go tonight. Kyrie Irving hit a three pointer to get
him close. Luka Donsich had the ball late, down by two.
Speaker 6 (29:25):
At six head five. The tway is life, stepping back
to the west.
Speaker 7 (29:30):
A quick pray seconds to down tied out Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Donci's the crossover and the pat that stepped back and
the Mavericks has brought one oh nine to.
Speaker 12 (29:40):
One away and that wound up the final That call
from ninety seven point one the freak. Luka Donsich with
a triple double, thirty two points, ten rebounds, thirteen assists
in this game, Minnesota, My goodness, how did they lose
this one? Well, Anthony Edwards might be one answer. Five
of seventeen shooting from the floor, and you mentioned the
mistakes in the final a minute, Nasrita, the Wolves missed
(30:01):
a last second three point try. He had been seven
of eight from three point range. By the way, ap said,
this the first time in NBA history that a defending
champion did not reach its conference final for five straight
seasons now. The last champ to even get that far
was Golden State five years ago. So it's wide open
(30:22):
in the West without Denver there, and my goodness, this
was this close to being a game apiece going to Dallas. Instead,
it's two games to none Mavericks. Celtics lead the East
Finals two games to none, with Game three at the
Pacers Saturday night. Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton is questionable for tomorrow
with a sore hamstring he left in the third quarter
last night. Boston's Christops Porzingis will be out again, by
(30:44):
the way, not only Tomorrow night at the Pacers, but
Game four Monday night on the holiday at Indiana. The
Indy five hundred is scheduled for Sunday, may wind up
being a Monday race. Thunderstorms are expected on Sunday. In
the NHL, Tonight's game is over game to ten in
New York to the Rangers in overtime, beating Florida two
to one. The East Final tied at a game apiece.
(31:06):
Game two of the West Final will be tomorrow night,
Edmonton at Dallas. The Oilers won in two overtimes last night.
You know, each team in the Final four, if I
can use that phrase, is seeking its first Stanley Cup
title in at least twenty years. That's a first for
NHL history. The champion Kansas City Chiefs will be visiting
the White House next Friday. NASCAR's Coca Cola six hundred
(31:27):
is this Sunday night on Fox TV from Charlotte. As
for the WNBA game in La, it's zero to five.
Indiana in the lead, now fifty seven to fifty six
over the Sparks seven minutes left in the game. Indiana
was down by eleven at the half. Caitlin Clark just
two of eleven shooting, but the rookie does have ten
rebounds to go with her five points. Clark with six
(31:49):
assists and just one turnover in this game so far.
To Major League Baseball, Yankees lead seven to nothing at
the Padres bottom of the seventh, getting all seven runs
on four homers against you Harvish Marlin's lead bottom of
the nine, three nothing at Arizona. Houston ahead at Oakland
six ' three bottom of the seventh, and Cleveland's winning
again ten to three at the Angels in the bottom
(32:10):
of the sixth. Colorado in eleven innings has beaten Philadelphia
three to two. That ends the phil six game winning streak.
Cubs at Saint Louis rained out, wins on the road
for San Francisco, and Baltimore wins at home from Minnesota,
and Cincinnati, which beat the Dodgers nine to six.
Speaker 6 (32:24):
Back to you, Steve, But I thought the Mets were up, No,
Steve said, he said who won? He said the Giants won.
He didn't mention who they play. It doesn't matter.
Speaker 4 (32:32):
And he's got just the big headline out of baseball.
Speaker 6 (32:35):
The people. No, he didn't, he got. No, he's just fine.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
The baseball gods decided they didn't want to hear Joe
buck on the call.
Speaker 12 (32:41):
He got he always due for that game with the
Cardinals comes tonight with Skip Carrey, and it's rained out,
and it's due for Network TV Saturday and Sunday.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
There's no makeup for this.
Speaker 6 (32:53):
Thank you very much too.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
I'm pretty sure the Mets were up sixty three, right,
you know, Frost it right.
Speaker 12 (32:59):
In the field, gone.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
Grand swam and the Giants are doing it again tonight
again tonight.
Speaker 12 (33:14):
Can I say that to do this in three straight games,
all on the road has not happened in the modern era.
The Giants down by four runs plus sixth inning or
later and they come back and win all three in
a row.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
There is two words for that, Steve Mets Yo.
Speaker 4 (33:28):
Yeah, modern era.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
By the by the mid by the end of June,
I expect the only guy to have more than fifty
games experience playing for the Mets. Francisco indor everybody else
is gonna be gone. You can call now, no reason
to wait. In fact, hey, David Stearns, don't wait. Don't
wait for the guys to continue to not hit, because
they'll you'll get less of them at the deadline.
Speaker 6 (33:54):
Trade them now because it's over.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
I'll even give you any the studio hotline help.
Speaker 6 (33:59):
So it's over, man.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
Hey, Coming up next, I want to go back to
something that is just absolutely painful and embarrassing for me,
and it plays into something that happened tonight. Mavericks one
oh nine, Timberwolves one O eight. That's next right here,
Jason and Mike.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 13 (34:26):
I will never root for the New York Mets again.
Another game with three home runs and nay lost. Sometimes
the Mets give me the creeps.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Okay, Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my
best friend Mike Harmon, live from the Tirack dot Com studios.
And we just watched a masterclass by the Timberwolves and
the Mavericks, a.
Speaker 6 (34:56):
Game in which we.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Saw the balance of power shift three and four times,
a furious comeback by the Mavericks, We're able to handle
the final minute of a game, and a huge brain
cramp let down not ready for the moment by the
Minnesota Timberwolves.
Speaker 6 (35:13):
But let me just say this, because I always get
reminded of this. I always say, you know what, Yeah, Jason,
you think you're right all the time.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Okay, there are very few times when I am wrong,
very few times when I am wrong, and this this
is one of them. And I always get reminded of it,
and it's it's fun to bring it up, even though, Wow,
it makes me look really bad.
Speaker 6 (35:28):
You're right.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
But isn't that where you just say, hey, stuff changed?
People excuse that.
Speaker 6 (35:33):
I know things change, I get it, I get things change.
But no, but but this is great because I love
this right here.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
Going into the NBA Draft in twenty eighteen, okay, go
in NBA Draft twenty eighteen, I tweeted this out about
Luka Doncic. Okay, Luka Doncich is the guy I'm most
afraid of in the draft. He's heady and slick and
makes the right plays in the EuroLeague. But he's not athletic.
(36:00):
The guys he's playing against our an athletic. He could
be Ricky Rubio hashtag NBA draft.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
Oh yeah, I remember this.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
You talk about a tweet that hasn't aged, that made
the worst aging tweet of all time, that has not
aged well at all. I mean kidding, that's not good.
I don't know that an age. I think it just died.
I think it's one of the It just died right away.
We didn't age at all. Sorry, just you know, not
even like the Captain America aging at the end of endgame. No, no,
this just died right here. It just died right after
(36:30):
it happened. I mean, and every time it happens, people
are buy me. Remember you said this, Yeah, yeah, I did, Yeah,
I did.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
Okay, he would cuss you out like he did, go
Bear tonight.
Speaker 6 (36:39):
Oh you'd be really mad man. I don't know.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
Your tweet was like the equivalent of that forearm hivalry
gave him to the rib cage.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
Yeah a take file.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
Yeah, that sort of woke Luga Danza chuck a little
bit so because.
Speaker 4 (36:51):
The first half a lot of the lot of the discussion.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
And certainly you and I were having it as we
came on the air. It's like he's having one of
those not he complained a.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Bunch, but he seemed a little bit just out of sorts, right,
not the same flow into the game.
Speaker 6 (37:07):
And then go Bear, Look, if.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
You're gonna take a foul, what do we always talk about?
Speaker 5 (37:13):
Make it count right, don't just gonna hey, I touched him,
call the file plee.
Speaker 6 (37:18):
No b like that. You're gonna do it?
Speaker 5 (37:20):
Take fall here you go and he went and he
put up his arm like he was gonna close line
someone coming off the ropes.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
Man's it really is? I look at that tweet and
I go, yeah, well, Lucas found a way, but it is.
I shouldn't say button because I can't defend it.
Speaker 14 (37:36):
I want to say, however, and it makes that However, However,
the game, the game has changed in the last few
years to where even if you are not in a
league that is very athletic, you can still succeed even
if you're not as athletic as the other players are.
Speaker 4 (37:56):
Oh, just call him crafty Lucafi.
Speaker 6 (37:59):
Look. No, guys like Luca and Jalen Brunson who you
know look going out like even No, no, you got
to be actually on the floor.
Speaker 4 (38:08):
No.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Even we watched Jay Wright say this, Hey, did I
think Jalen Brunson could play in the league.
Speaker 6 (38:14):
Yeah, absolutely, I think he'd be this good. No way
like these guys who are an athletic.
Speaker 1 (38:18):
But if you're smart enough and you can find a
way to create space, and this is true in any
sport from the NBA to hockey to to soccer. You know, yeah,
you can have other guys on you, covering you, but
if you can create space and get a shot, yeah,
you're gonna wind up being successful.
Speaker 6 (38:34):
And that's what Luca does that step back three. Be
able to create that space.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
It doesn't matter that he's not incredibly faster, can get
to the get to the rim like Kevin Johnson, can't
used to be able to do or someone like that.
I mean, you still can succeed if you don't have that.
And yeah, you can hide it in crafting this but
really is when you can hit, When you can take
a step back and hit shots, and it's part of
your offensive repertoire, really doesn't matter. You can you can
be a little slow because the defender can't get right
(39:01):
on he defender's right on you, You're still gonna be
fast enough to get by them because they're faced the
wrong way.
Speaker 6 (39:06):
Like that's just that's just the way the NBA goes.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
Why defenders don't get so close if you can get
by But if but if you can step back and
hit that, well, guess what, man, you you have you
have enough chance to be a big star in the NBA,
regardless to whether or not you're as athletic as the
other guys are.
Speaker 5 (39:20):
Yeah, the game changes, you find the right fit, you
create a couple of moves, and and obviously in the
league it gets more physical in the playoffs, but you
can get to be a bit of an artist without
getting broken in half like you.
Speaker 4 (39:37):
Did once upon a time.
Speaker 5 (39:39):
Oh he's going into the laneam Okay, he's not going
into the lane anymore, you know, I mean, it's it's
a bit of a different thing. And you obviously with Luca.
The other thing is they've built a team around him.
Trade deadline really, you know, I know it's been talked
about a lot, and on the broadcast, you know, for
the bits that I caught h as you know, we
(40:00):
had our mini breaks and all was the fact that look,
defensive rating the second half of the year was huge,
but you also had both Luca and Kyrie also bought
into the scheme that was being pushed more so than
maybe they had defensively in the past.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
And Luca in particular, the.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
Guy I'm most afraid of in the draft. He's heady's
slick and makes the right plays, but he's not athletic.
The guys he's playing against our athletic Now that was true,
at least that that part of it was true.
Speaker 6 (40:30):
He could be Ricky Rubio, Oh boy.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
Just a track record of a lot of guys that
had come and failed or had been drafted and never
showed up on US soil. And look at Ricky Rubio
catching astray right there for no pes Well you hate him? Hey,
coming up We'll have more on this game, but coming
up next, Caitlin Clark has just hit a thirty footer
(40:54):
and potentially the Fever are two minutes away from their
first win of the season.
Speaker 6 (41:00):
Keep it right here, Jason and Mike. This is Fox
Sports Radio.
