(00:51):
I'll tell you what lost in all of the drama
this weekend with Caitlin Clark and the WNBA and Angel Rees.
I'll tell you, man, WNBA is fun. The WNBA is
a ton of fun. Now they got problems and they
got stuff they gotta take care of, which we'll get
to in a second. But boy, it is even more
(01:11):
fun to talk about than I thought it was gonna be.
It really is, but it keeps adding tentacles and people
have taken their sides. Right. There's heroes, there's.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Villains, there's sim inane conversations that are being had, and
we certainly saw some of that come to the forefront today.
But all in all, you know, it's something that you know,
we've talked about for a while on the show. I'm
not gonna say it was front and center because, let's
face it, the rest of the sports media like, look,
(01:39):
you talk hockey, what happens?
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Don't talk hockey.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Right, You can get a little bit now that it's
the Stanley Cup Final, but otherwise no push it away,
go Panthers. Right, So now we got that although Edmonton
gained a lot of fans over the last couple of days,
and it ain't for anything that was done actually on
the ice. You can go in your socials and find that.
But just happy you don't have to worry about the
(02:03):
Dallas Stars. Yeah, I'll deal with one team in the finals,
not the Cowboys. Don't gotta deal with two. Now, I
get it been problematic.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Likewise, it's gonna have to give dak sixty five million
dollars to get a headline. Now I just gotta pay
CD LAMB instead. So it's okay.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
But likewise, there's a lot of sporting events through the years.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
The Stars have made it. Now gotta give gotta give
Dack his money, Gotta give him seventy five million. But
now I can distract from the w NBA guys, the
NBA guys. I just gotta pay CD. So that's fine.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
You were able to go and cancel that giant novelty
check you had printed down at the Kinkos.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Thought I was gonna have problems that every every team
in Dallas going to finals in this past season except
for US. But hey, it's okay. Now just just fifty
percent of the teams.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Now, well, you know what, if he cuts concession prices
a little bit for the upcoming season, would have been
a win.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
The real question how much did he pay off the Stars?
But you get but you going down the line, right.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
How many sports stories like we talk about the women's
national soccer team.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
How many times when.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
We do a segment we talk about some of their
problems in the last couple of years. How much negative
feedback did begin of why the hell are you guys
talking about this?
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Like it's part of the business, right.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
You're looking at you know, we're broadcast in here, so
you're trying to reach everybody with something that's going to
move them positively negatively. But if you're unaffected and you
don't care and you tune out altogether, that's the worst
of all of it. Right, So the WNBA has a
seat at the table. People are watching more basketball, and yeah,
the numbers suggests it's mostly Caitlin Clark led games.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
And the schedule.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Guess what, you didn't have to look very far because
most nights the Indiana Fever been playing.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
They can't play every night. I mean, come on, I
really thought they'd be playing a night. That record is terrible,
back to back to back. They could play every night.
Don't practice, just have games. If you just times, they
could finish ten and seventy. No one's gonna care. Everybody
else plays forty games. They play every night. It's fine.
But the make Thursday off this week because it's game
(04:01):
one of the NBA Finals. Play Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, then
playing other Friday. Come on, what's go on? Come on, man,
flexible scheduling, man, flexible schedule.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Well, you know what we need those prime time I
look forward to these games every night.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
I look forward to seeing what so and so was
gonna say about so and so, because boy, they really
don't like each other.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
There's a lot of physicality, right, There's a lot of battles.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
And it's not just Caitlin Clark.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
We saw Angel Reese taken to the deck a week
ago in the low post. Congratulations to Alyssa Thomas. She
was the conference player of the month, right her and
Asia Wilson. And then as everybody would have expected and
really hoped to see, Caitlin Clark was the rookie of
the month.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yes, well she did have a she'd have a month
that was what second only in the history of the
league to what Brianna Stewart did a think coming into.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, I just think there's a lot of those stat
pools that we're really getting into weird territory. Well kind
of like when Clark was hitting three point shots and
we were finding anybody who's ever thrown up a basketball
to compare it to I think at the WNBA when
the NBA, like we do it all the time, like
you and I will be sitting here watching me and say,
the Western Conference Finals and all of a sudden, there's
just a random.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Stats like who's doing these stat poles? What are we doing?
First person to score one hundred and fifty points, pulled
down fifty rebounds, twenty five steals, twenty five assists, four blocks.
Let's go all the way back, see what we can
find here.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Oh yeah, got home to beat the kids on the
tricycle at the halftime race.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
I mean all of these well, look, look it's tons
of fun. And obviously this weekend has it's hit a
new level with the bad foul on Caitlin Clark by
Kennedy Carter in their game against the Sky and the
fallout since then, and what we have seen is, look,
this weekend was embarrassing for everybody. Was embarrassing because it
(05:50):
was a dirty play. It was embarrassing. The officials didn't
adjudicate it properly. It was then given a flagrant today,
but that should have been something called in the moment
because it was right in front of the The behavior
of Reese and Carter on the court after not talking
after look, it's been something right and you see Carter
(06:10):
and Reese both talk today about the foul and the plane.
You're gonna hear from Angel Rees coming up in a
few minutes and how we're saying that, you know, the
league is not about one person, but it's about me.
I mean, it's just totally totally angel Rees. But you
can see, you can see the one thing that we
talked about a couple of weeks ago, right that what's
the biggest thing and what's the biggest question, the biggest
(06:31):
fear that I had for the WNBA, and that is
you have to show that you are ready to handle success.
And that's the one thing I can tell you right away.
They are not. They have not been ready to handle
what was what goes along with Caitlin Clark coming into
the league. You know, you know, it's like it's like
when there's a big fight that's gonna be streamed, or
(06:55):
a few years ago or something, a new website is
going to be launched and you're preparing for preparing for it,
and you'd have your it. Guys, you go, okay, you're ready. Yes,
everything is fine, you run tests, everything is fine. What
if we get you know, one hundred thousand people in
a ten seconds, But no, it's gonna be fine. It
can withstand it. Okay, it's not gonna crash. Not gonna crash. Okay,
what if we get five hundred thousand people in the
(07:15):
first five minutes, don't worry, it's not gonna crash, not
gonna crash. And then the time comes and you go online,
you try to sell tickets, and the site crashes, and
you're like, what happened? How are we not ready? I
thought we were ready. That's the WNBA. They were not
ready to handle the instant success that was coming with
Caitlyn Clark into the league. You knew that there were
gonna be more eyeballs, You knew there was gonna be backlash,
(07:36):
you knew there was going to be attention, You knew
there was going to be things you had to deal with.
And all we've seen the first couple of weeks has
been boy, all of this attention on the WNBA and
they don't seem like they handle business right. If you
ask the average person, the average fan, what do you
take away, Like, what do you think of the first
couple weeks of the WNBA not knowing you know, hey,
you know Kitlyn Clark is coming. Average fan, the average
(07:59):
fan would say, wow, boy, these players really hate Caitlin Clark.
Don't they they really don't like her. And boy, it
seems like the media hates her too, And whenever I
see the media talk about it, it seems like it's
because she's white, Like this is what, this is what
the average person is taking away optics wise from the
first month plus of the WNBA. And and you can
(08:21):
tell right away that you got to get a handle
on this man. You got to get a handle on
Here's some big fac here's some dirty fouls that are called.
And you can obviously see there's some kind of anti
Caitlin Clark movement that goes through the league that's pushed
by talking heads who have no other storyline and say, well,
is it racial?
Speaker 5 (08:39):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (08:39):
This is it? That is it? I mean, you have
to figure out a way to say, hey, let's make
sure we look like we're a big we're a big sport.
Now we talked about having a seat at the table.
We do have a seat at the table. Now. People
care about the WNBA. Do they just care about Caitlyn Clark. No,
they care about all the players. But Caitlyn Clark obviously
is the shack. She's the hood ornament of the league.
And if the other player don't like it. I'm sorry.
(09:01):
You got to figure out a way forward that you
don't look like you are shooting yourself in the foot
every five seconds, because it looks like with this instant
success WNBA has, they weren't ready to handle it. And
when that's the option, when the average fan can say, boy,
they seem to hate their star player. Is it because
is it not? Is she?
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Why?
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Is it because she's white? Is some other reason? I
don't understand what's going When that's the conversation, WHOA. You
got to take hold of this now. You can't just
wait and let this hopefully work itself out. You got
to take hold of this and say, hey, no, no,
we know what we're doing. Everything is fine. We're big
at conglomerate, we are a big sport. We're going to
get it right. But you got to get it right
(09:37):
now because you weren't ready when it started. And I said,
you gotta be able to handle success, because that's a
big thing. You see people and organizations and companies fail
because they can't handle it.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
And that's what's going on with the w scale. Certainly
in building to scale after all the years and all
the negative headlines right about ratings, and merchandising and ticket
sales and attendance and all of that stuff. It's hard
right when that flips. And I know on the whole,
you know you're not looking at a monumental change in
(10:07):
the average attendance. But guess what, fever games have their appeal.
You know, you've got the state of Eyeway. They don't,
they don't have a pro team. So you adopt something.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
What do you adopt?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
University of Ioa Athletics both on the football and basketball side,
and women's basketball and Caitlyn Clark, we've watched it, right,
and it's the road Show, and it was built in
right that you had this pent up animosity, rivalry, whatever
you want to call it, whatever however you ascribe it,
because again, you know, I can't tell people how to feel.
(10:41):
When it comes down to it. You like the players
you like, you like the teams you like. And if
Caitlin Clark's attention is too much for you from the outside,
you know you can go back to not watching if
that's really turning off. But for the players that are
in the league, look, I think Saturday's game from everything
(11:02):
that I've watched and watched a lot of her action
here in the studio and games, you know, when we're
working remote or I'm on at home, Like that was
the first time that it was really egregious to me. Like,
she's gotten hit and she's come off screens and she's
taken some hits. She's delivered more than a few of
her own. Right, and again, if you're gonna be blank
(11:23):
talking up and down the court, eventually someone's gonna go
and take their shot. Now, this one being off the ball,
and I fear for Caitlin Clark. She's got a little
bit of a reputation as a flopper. So now you've
got officials that are kind of deciding how much is
a sell versus true impact on those things. So that's
gonna be a bit of an issue as well. But
(11:45):
to your point about handling all of this, yeah, it's
been a disaster. What the sky did the other day.
I mean, you could like it, say all right, we'll
play the villain to a point, but you're not helping
the league grow.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
No, you're casting get negative light.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Like whether it's car or acknowledge it and wants to
give a full answer or not, but whether Spoon's shutting
it down just saying all right, We're done with that,
And kind of that was the end of really questioning
it all, like, hey, you were in the Spotlight game.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yeah you lost by a point.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Yeah right, you put up a good Like, here's an
opportunity you can still shine, Like all right, those questions
don't have to be everything that's being asked.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
But that's but that's about handling success. Handling sets doesn't
always mean when you win. Handling success is Hey, you know,
guess what you're interviewed now after every game. I want
to care about what you say. It's a little bit
care about what you say. Understand that what the image
you put out there is what people think of you.
And that's a big deal. And to say I don't
want to talk about it, We're not going to that.
(12:44):
I'm gonna go on social media and talk about it.
And then finally, would they talk today and and and
Kennedy Carter finally says, oh, don't judge me by my
one action. Hey, this is big time sports now, this
is big this. I get that you've been in the
league a couple of years now. Every thing has changed
and you got to be ready to handle this. It
goes from its top to bottom it's just you gotta
(13:05):
be handling success. I mean being in the spotlight. You
gotta handle it.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Now.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
I do appreciate that when she goes to social media,
I mean it draws a whole other conversation, right, it
adds fuel to it as oppose just the file would
have liked that in front of the microphone instead of
social medium.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
But that's me.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
That's my preference because then it gives us a good
SoundBite instead of reading off a tweet. But again, you know,
own into the action and the attention that's coming off it.
It's not always going to be positive. Angel Rees ended
up having to get fined a thousand for not being available.
Sky got fined five thousand for the way that all
(13:41):
went down. It's think it's an opportunity as a sport, right,
you are just gonna have her attention, like it or not.
Here's an opportunity for everybody else to step into the
light and yeah, should it. People have been along for
the ride for twenty years. Sure they're at the party
now welcoming.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Man. You you can't you can't look back and say
why did you get to the party? Now? It's okay,
you're here. We can't tell you when your sport is
going to break through and be something big. It took
women's soccer a long time, took other sports a long
time to break through. Men's soccer took them a long time,
different time. But you're here now, and you gotta be
ready to handle success, and they can't. The world is
(14:20):
moving too fast for the WNBA, for its commissioner, for
its coaches, for its players. It is moving way too
fast right now, and they got to get a handle
on that exit out about a Fresco exit swollen down

runs First dot Com. That is Safety Runs First dot Com. Now,
before we get into what could be the quote of
the year, uh so, I have I have a movie
recommendation for you. Okay, okay, been waiting because I didn't
see it in the theater and it just hit Netflix
this weekend. But Garfield already that it probably ain't much
(16:17):
much longer. You can actually you can actually put yourself
into the Garfield movie when it isna tonight, then uh no,
you gotta see Godzilla minus one. Okay.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
The one that was on the tagline was it was
the most pirated movie in the last year.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
That's the one. He's insane Godzilla minus one like that one.
I loved it. It was oh he did like it? Okay, good.
I was gonna say to everybody he could be insane
for some another reason. But it just hit Netflix and
I'm like, oh, I've wanted to see it, and we
watched it last night and it's fantastic. Like I look
at it and I know, I know one for Best Adapted,
(16:58):
Best visual Effects, and they only had like six hundred
effects in the entire movie. And you're saying you had
six hundred effects in this movie. This movie was like,
you know, you see Godzilla throughout the entire movie, where
you compared to like The Avengers, where there's like nine
million effects for a two hour movie. Oh, but that's
pretty impressive. It you know, it was a prep was
(17:18):
Godzilla in the water coming up out and seeing it
go and swim through the water and it spikes to down.
I'm like, this is insanely good. It was. I mean,
I can't it's it gives you a great backstory, like,
it's not it's not your typical Oh here comes Godzilla.
Whatever we do like. It opens with it's about a
kamikaze pilot who turns around. It's at the end of
(17:40):
World War Two, who turns around, won't and won't go
into Pearl Harbor and claims there's something wrong with his plane.
Flies back to an island where if something's wrong with
your plane, that's where they fix it. And that's how
the movie starts. And I'm like, wow, okay, and then
Godzilla shows up, and then Godzilla gets older and all
kinds of things happen. But that's like the beginning of
the movie. And I'm like, oh my goodness, god Zuki
(18:00):
in it. No god Zukie, that's too There's no Rodan,
and there's no Bathra and there's no King Kong. This
is a specific Godzilla movie. I'm in Godzilla minus one. See.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
I did two biographies for lack of a better termy.
I did The Beach Boys one actually both on Disney,
so there you go the whatever. The other one was
the Jim Henson movie from Ron Howard. That was good
at interviews, some good old clips. They have a lot
of fun with the early years. Nice before everything really too.
(18:34):
Here's how he got creative on local television whatever.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
The Beach Boys one I had.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
The big problem was they did a lot of the
backstory and then once it got to legal problems and
dwindling audiences whatever, they kind of acknowledged it, but then
go to the researchers. I'm like, no, I need more
about what a jerk Murray was and how he screwed
you over. That's like in the lawsuits and when you
started playing, you know, the county fairs and small areas. No,
(18:58):
you can't just gloss into that. That was a pretty
long period before you resurrected and stay most game on board.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
You guys disappoint me. Why is that?
Speaker 4 (19:06):
I would have totally thought you guys would have lived
at Furioso this weekend.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
Oh no, I'm saving furio I got a buddy coming
into town that can't wait to see it. We're gonna
go see it together this week. She survived production. Well,
we did go see Kingdom and the Planet of the
Apes last week.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
I love that math Max, bring it. Yeah, Okay, yeah,
and it's Anya Taylor Joyce, so I'm in.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Yeah, it looks I think she has like I think
John Wick may have more lines in this movie.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
I believe that is correct. Yeah, and more people may
die than than and John Wick. That's a good question.
I'm gonna bring like one of those old umpire clickers,
going to count them. I lost I lost count, I
lost count Blue, Come on, come on letting people into
your party.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
No, I'm actually counting guests. Let's go. Here is an
early nominee for Quote of the Year in Sports. Right.
The Caitlin Clark story this weekend has gained a lot
lot of legs. By now you've seen the hard foul
uh by Kennedy Carter that caused everybody to wonder, what's
going on with the WNBA? Why are you not protecting
(20:09):
your star? Why is nobody talking about it? After Why
wouldn't Kennedy Carter and Angel Reese talk about it? With
the fever playing the sky?
Speaker 5 (20:16):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (20:16):
What is happening? The WNBA has got to get a
handle on this, and we talked about them being able
to handle success a few minutes ago.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
I do like the fact that a lot of nbaight
players agreed with my initial question, what the hell are
her teammates?
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Yes, I mean you had the one teammate that helped
her up and and and no one went and got
in in Kennedy Carter's face. You had the referee who
was standing right there and decided to call it a
common foul instead of calling it. Hey, this is a flagrant, dude.
You can't do that. They call it you just throw
it up to somebody from behind, and and and shit,
you can't do that. That's a dirty that's from behind. Now, No,
(20:50):
we're keeping it that way. I remember it was Friday night,
but the day before the game when I said, I
really think there should be a deep dive into how
Caitlin Clark is being officiated this year. This is before
that we talked about that Friday night. I felt like
a prophet.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
But the great quotes, you know, from from that game
coming out was quote, I feel like I'm getting hammered,
And that was that's gonna be on T shirts and
people go to bars.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Yeah, well yeah, well yeah, because that has nothing to
do with basketball, I can make it, well, I can
make that about anything. I feel like I'm getting hammered.
Now that holy co. But here's the quote because Angel
Reese and Kennedy Carter finally spoke today about what happened
last weekend with Caitlyn Clark. And here's Angel Reese, who
(21:37):
likes to think she's as big a star as Caitlyn
Clark is. She has a great following, she can be
a big star. She already is a star. But listen
to her talk about what she thinks about where the
WNBA is right now, what's going on, and her role
in it. Because this, really, this is gonna be hard
to beat for being the quote of the year. Joey
(22:01):
Gallo's crushed bitch balls out. Oh boy, Mets won today,
we won? Did you know you gave him a homan
Jenny Jones? Yeah, I know. He puts the Nationals on top.
Speaker 5 (22:12):
Here, Hey, you get to hit one every what seven events?
He's also the real father. It's not Mark Davis. There's
Joey Gallows twenty twenty four year right there in front
of you. Morey Povich rhymes, he is the real father.
He homers against the Mets. That's twenty twenty four for
Joey Gallo. That's all you need.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
Uh No, here is Dangel Reese talking about everything going
on Caitlin Clark and the WNBA and her place in
it earlier today. It all started from the National Championship game.
Speaker 7 (22:43):
And I've been dealing with this for two years now
and understanding like, yeah, negative things have probably been said
about me, but honestly, I'll take that because look where
women's basketball is. People are talking about women's basketball. You've
never would think that we talk about women's basketball. People
are pulling up to games. We got celebrities coming to
games soldau arenas, like just because of one single game,
and just looking at that, like, I'll take that role.
(23:04):
I'll take the bad guy roll, and I'll continue to
take that on and be that for my teammates. And
if I want to be that, and I know I'll
go down to history. I'll look back at twenty years
and be like, yeah, the reason why we watching women's
basketball is not just because of one person.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
It's because of me too, And I want you.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
To realize that. So first, she says, all of what's
going on is because of one game last year, but
now it's not about one person. Right. She and Caitlyn
Clark kind of hit it big together, right, But Kitlyn
Clark had already been a household name. And yes, the
rival with the Angel Rees. Angel Rees has to understand
(23:39):
her popularity is because there was a moment when they
were gonna win the national championship and she went, give
me your ring and that was wow, and that was
kind of cool. Because Caitlyn Clark, as great a player
as she is, she liked to talk smack. Here, what's
coming back to her? This is a great basketball moment.
She has turned that moment and she has turned that
into I am a are and I am a big
(24:01):
celebrity and she is. But to sit back and say
it's not about one person, but it's about me. And
I know what she's gonna try to do. She's gonna
try to come out tomorrow and say when I said
it's about me, I meant it's about us, like me
being any of us could say this. No no, no,
no no, no, that's not the royal me. She can't
(24:21):
say the royal me because she specifically said, when I
look back, I'm gonna go down in history. Yeah, dropping
it's about us, Okay, But she says, no, it's not
about one person, but it's about me. I'm you know,
it's the desire that she has for Caitlin Clark's spotlight
is just so over the top. Like that that quote
(24:43):
right there is all you need to know about Angel Rees. Right,
she wants to smoke. Now she's gonna get it. Right,
I've laid I've laid off of talking about Angel Rees.
I just look, she's someone with a huge ego. It happens.
She's a really good player, she's good for the game,
all this, but now she wants smoke. Okay, she's gonna
get smoked. H You're not Kitlyn Clark. Nobody in the
league is Caitlin Clark. If I could do one thing right,
(25:05):
and I always say, hey, you know there's the league
could use my pr services, I would talk to every
team and I would say, Okay, you want to stop
looking like a clown show, because right now the optics
are the WNBA. You guys are a clown show. You
hate your superstar, you're rude to the media, you won't talk.
You got to stop and you got to be able
to handle success.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
Right.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
You don't have the cachet that the NBA and the
NFL and Major League Baseball have about Hey, we can
say this about so and so and be rude to
this person. Nobody else in professional sports goes after their
superstar the way you have the open disdain for Caitlin Clark.
And before you tell me I'm wrong, I'll show you
injury celebrating the dirty hit. I'll show you her hugging
(25:46):
her teammate, and I'll show you Kennedy Carter say afterwards, Hey,
what does she got besides a three pointer? So you
know there's open hate for Caitlin Clark. You don't have
to like her. You don't have to. What I would
say is the world is wide enough for all of you, right,
just like in Hamilton, Right, the world's wide like burn
Hamilton realized too late. The world is wide enough for
both of them.
Speaker 7 (26:04):
Right.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
We can't say Alexander Hamilton, great life, great career, could
have run for president, had a couple of issues. That's
what we skip over all the tough parts and go
to the end. Like you said in your biography, right there, Burr,
same thing, ran for president almost one, didn't win, thirty
six tie breakers, he didn't win, and they wound up
shooting each other in a duel. Oh you know, all right?
Sorry if I spoil a pretty good end, though, sorry
(26:25):
if I spoiled for you.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
I'm gone to be president now. One last thing, know
where about thank him for the endorsement. I say, the
world is wide enough for all of you. You can
all be stars, but Caitlin Clark is the biggest star.
And if you're jealous about that, I'm sorry. You got
to find a way to deal with that and have
it not manifest itself in dirty fouls and ways that
(26:51):
make it look like the league is just unhappy to
have her there, because I are you upset that she's
not the right person that you that you don't think
she should be the one that brings you guys charter
flights that gets the league into this level.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
You think it should have been somebody else years ago.
It probably could have been, but it wasn't, and it's
happening now. And so understand that you can still carve
out a great repute. You can see whoever you want to.
But do you really want to be the one that
sits there and is mad at Caitlin Clark? And as
any time you use something, Angel Reach wants to talk. Hey,
I'm just as big as her, which you're not. You're not.
(27:26):
I'm sorry, but you're not. You're not the player she is.
You just aren't. Nobody else is she Again, she came
into the league as a leading scorer in college basketball history.
That's a pretty big deal. And we don't make up
the rules. We don't tell you, Hey, this person's gonna
be a transcendental figure. Lebron is a transcendental figure, right,
mahomes is Brady. You see all the names of people
(27:47):
who are you know how it works. This is how
sports goes. I would say, just understand that this is
the game. Now you can have whatever you want. And
how bad this looks when your entire sport look like
you just want to fight with each other instead of Hey,
let's have great stuff on the court. Let's have it
be something everybody talks about. Let's have people buying gigs.
(28:08):
What going to hear all the players buy merchandise? Do that,
do all that. If you're showing that you're going to
bring more people in, they will come to games, they
will do all these things, they will buy merch they
will do it. You'll make more money, the salaries will
go up, all of this. But you want to make
it look like you want to fight with each other
over who deserves credit, and who's and who's who should
be coming to watch somebody and you should and someone's
coming to watch this more than I have. This just
(28:28):
looks like a clown show out.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
You might have had him run a couple of years ago, right,
I had asked you. Unfortunately that was COVID.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
That did work.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
Coming out of COVID and into this new phase and
let's face it.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
Media, uh and all there's there's a lot.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
More hugging of trying to bring people in, right, different cultures,
different ethnicities, women have more seats at the table, and
sports talk and sports television, et cetera. So the audience
is changing, right, The demographics of who's viewing is changing.
And maybe there were people already there that weren't counted,
(29:05):
didn't feel they were.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
The voices were heard, and.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
Now you've got numbers to back it up, right, and
the money starts to flow, and everybody has to realize,
all right, it's a.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
New age for Angel rees here.
Speaker 3 (29:15):
I wish you'd said us, but I kind of like
the met because she's also speaking to an audience that's
for her. Right, we have audience broadcasting, and there's Angel
Reaves can say, my people know exactly who I'm talking to.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
I'm here and you're here with me, do you But
you just said we're growing the game. Are you growing
the game at that point? Are you're growing yourself? Well,
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
About owner, but I mean you're you're trying to recognize
your place in the large world, but you're also trying
to talk to those people that are your fans, right,
because people are gonna be Caitlin Clark fans. And we've
seen that in all these road games, right, Hey, can
you come over and take a picture with these eighty
kids we brought from, you know, from this school, like okay,
And you can see even in her demeanor she smiles
(29:56):
pretty wants the cameras up. But it's like I had
to another one of these, like because I got to
imagine that's exhausting on her side as well. But for
for Angel Reese, recognize the moment, right, and she's trying
to maximize her moment in the sun. A lot of
players now have shoes, you deals, Right, everybody won nuts
when Caitlin Clark's was announced. Guess what those are still
(30:17):
in the offing. Those are already existing. These other people that
have been in the league they already have shoes that
are being released, so they were in the process.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
They just didn't get the same hype.
Speaker 3 (30:27):
And hoopla that that the Clark you know, eight figure
deal did.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
So the audience is growing.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
There's always been a base audience there, and I think
that's the part of it that I think annoys me most.
It's like the number of people in media that are
acting like they've discovered the WNBA this year.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
Hey, look at this, there's games that are being played
with women. Wow. Really, yes, look at this. It is amazing.
It's untelevision. It's been around a long.
Speaker 3 (30:53):
Time, and I think that's where a lot of the
animosity comes from. It's like, we've been here, we've been covering.
There's like, but now's your time in the spotlight. Embrace
people coming in and hopefully some of the ham handed
nonsense goes away and it becomes normalized.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
But we're not there yet. Now there's growing pains. Uh,
you're never gonna get a better quote than it's not
about one person, it's about me. Well, you know you
never gonnae a better quote. The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon coming up next. We'll have
more WNBA next hour, But we have an NFL story
to get to because we could be on the verge
of a very big retirement. One we will celebrate with
(31:31):
a song that's next.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
No, I'll let it wash over you and life gotta
take time to heal. Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike. Mike, We're gonna to
take some time. He sends, what high in there?
Speaker 3 (31:53):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (31:53):
This Paul is crushed. Oh no, Here.
Speaker 6 (32:01):
Joey Gallows fifth of the Year puts the Nationals on top.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Here the four damn the Mets gave up a home
on the Joey Gallo.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
It's really tough that we're running into Joey Gallow at
this time.
Speaker 1 (32:10):
Joey Gallow's dead. I said, it's going to be a
dad dd It doesn't look yeah yeah. Joey Gallo hit
a home run tonight and the Mets one. That's okay, Jay,
we need to take time.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
To shout out dad power, dad power three times fast.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
But we have to dad power, dad power, dad power
now five times No now I'm done because we have
to take time to heal because Darren Waller is likely
going to retire. I thought that was last year. Darren
Waller likely is going to retire because he could play
this stupid ass song. That's why, is the joey reason?
Speaker 3 (32:48):
He man, this guy hasn't been relevant as a player
since twenty twenty.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
Oh it's been a while, but the Giants are expecting
to Aaron Waller to retire any day.
Speaker 7 (33:02):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (33:03):
The biggest thing Waller has done in the last few
months has been this divorce video that he put out
last week.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
Yeah, and I hope he and Kelsey Plumb are Okay,
I'm sure they are. I'm I'm sure she's healing well.
In the video, she stabs him in the back and
he ses, I think he dies on the beach. It
wasn't her, no, I know, but it's supposed to be her,
but it wasn't. Metaphorically like, he gets stabbed in the
back and dies but looks nothing like her. But he's
healing too. Yeah, but he well, maybe he's here, Maybe
(33:31):
he's like Wolverine. He recovers. It doesn't matter. I can
just you can stab me. I think I got you.
But no, no, no, you don't recover from that fumble.
It's a tough fumble. But I think right now it
looks like Kelsey Plumb is living her best in history.
Well that's like the fumbling through the end.
Speaker 4 (33:45):
Zone fumbling and then it's a touch back or fumble.
We're gonna say the often Safarian Jenkins.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
He completed the cat. He didn't fumble out of bouts works.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
See, I really anticipated the butt fumble. Come on, Larry, No,
but I met the the audio. That's where I thought
we were gonna go.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
Even even Carl knew he didn't complete the catch, Larry,
come on. So yeah, this is the biggest thing he
did was put out this breakup video a week ago,
and it still stays in your head, tagging Tom No
it's in your head. No now, it's it's in all
your heads as well. What's going on? Why do you
(34:26):
like this song so much? Mary is worried about you? Yes,
you actually am. This is not a really good earworm.
If you were so worried about him, why did you
play it? You know, like, I want to get paid
to Okay, if you got you know what? I think
you guys all need to take time to heal. No,
I don't know that your hel No, you.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
Said, no, I got problems and I'm readily admitted.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
You know, in life, you gotta we gonna take time,
tagging time. That sounds like a song that was written
in about four minutes. Four Sometimes it comes to you
just really fast there, you know, but old here's Audrey. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
Now, let me just say I mean a lot of
songs guys have said they've written in ten to fifteen minutes,
so I mean, yeah, but they're.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
Good songs and not out on tune worthies. Hey, auto
tune is gonna save a lot of career. He's not
t payne. Uh. But let me just say this, because
now Darren Waller is going to retire. Yeah, so what
we're gonna have is those two great years he had
and the song that's his legacy twenty nineteen and twenty
twenty twenty twenty three hundred total yards, twelve touchdowns and
(35:31):
two hundred receptions. Uh. Sometimes signing the wrong player can
set a team back years. And you think about this.
The Giants two years ago, coming off that great run,
that surprising run with Brian Dable, Daniel Jones turns out
to be pretty good. Hey, Barkley turns out to bounce back.
He gets paid for a little bit. All of a sudden,
(35:52):
the Giants looked like, hey, wait, we had a great
defensive line. We're ready to wreck the NFC. Brian Dables
a great head coach. And what did they do in
the off season? They went all in on Darren Waller.
They went all in on this is the guy we're
building the offense around. Darren Waller. They make the trade
with the Raiders, and we said it at the time,
It's like, Darren Waller is talented, but the guy can't
(36:14):
stay healthy. How long are you gonna have him for?
Like I want to tell Brian Dable, Dude, you've been
coaching in the NFL longer than me, and I know
you're not gonna have the guy for more than a
few weeks. And what did they have They had him
for a few weeks? Was he ever great? No? And
what happened to the Giants? They're ready to start over.
They're ready to start over at quarterback, they're ready to
start over at head coach, ready to start over everywhere.
(36:36):
Sometimes you signed the wrong guy and it sets your
team back years. The Giants signed the wrong guy, and
they were gonna build the team around Darren Waller, and
look what happened. It was no longer any good and
he couldn't stay healthy. And suddenly now they have no players.
They have nobody to build the team around. They're gonna
They're trying to make it work on the fly. Guys
are trying to keep their jobs before they get fired.
After this year, the Giants are an absolute mess. And
(36:58):
I can trace it back to when they decided the
missing piece on our team was Darren Waller.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
I mean you look at what the squad became, and
Jones wasn't good before he got hurt, but the idea was,
all right, if Waller is any bit of what he
was those two years, then he's kind of like having
a number one receiver, which means all those guys who've
been propping up as number one receivers kind of slide
to a two to three role where they really belong. Instead,
(37:26):
you got a guy who once again was ineffective and
unavailable for a good chunk of the season. Now Barkley's gone,
Jones coming back off injury, you bring in Devin Singletary.
That's the replacement for Saquon Barkley and Singletary is a
solid back, but it's the same thing. It's a number
two that you're trying to elevate to a one slot
(37:47):
and you're wide receiving core one. Dale Robinson's interesting. Does
he become a seventy catch guy?
Speaker 1 (37:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (37:54):
Slayton and these other guys, we've seen it. Alan Robinson,
we saw the best to him four years ago. So yeah,
it's a tough rebuild, and the acquisition and lean into
Waller certainly foolhardy for the brass of the New York
Football Giants.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
I'm just hoping that the Giants in the next coming
days can take some time to hear. Will they have
a better record than the Jets this year?
Speaker 2 (38:19):
Though?
Speaker 1 (38:19):
No Jets are going thirteen and four. We're fun. Coming
up next, we got a big story out of the NFL.
Did the right guy get paid? Today? This is Fox Sports.
