Speaker 4 (00:31):
Welcome aboard Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with Me
by Carmen No Jason Smith tonight. So you'll note a
lot of an absence of Mets and Nicks talk for
the most part, lots of other storylines to get into
across our sporting universe as we broadcast live from the
ti rack dot com studios tire rac dot com. We'll
help you get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping,
(00:52):
free roadhazard protection, over ten thousand recommended installers tire rac
dot com. The way tire buying. It would be efforting
to link up with my guy Ryan Hollins, ten years
in your NBA as well as part of the broadcast
team for the Houston Rockets. Got to say on a
Friday night I'm in a weird position. No, not because
(01:15):
I get to be the booming voice that welcomes you
in across the globe on the iHeartRadio app, the local
stations four hundred plus that carry the show. No, the
White Sox are winning a game now. This is not
unusual because they've led a lot of games the last
week or so. See, I'm going to make it about
me for a minute here in my misery because I
(01:36):
asked our guy Shay, who's in for Frostburg tonight. He's
wearing his show, Hey, Otani Jersey. We'll get into some
of the merch being sold at Yankee Stadium in a
little bit. But as I'm watching the White Sox and
you guys have lived and died with me here on air.
Not to the level of my guy Smith. I think
I wear it on the chin a little bit better
(01:57):
than he does from an emotional piece of it. But
losing those games to the Cubs after building big leads, Look,
no matter how bad your team is, that's the one
you don't want to lose, Right. I'm a Northwestern grad
for years punching bag in the Big Ten. You know
what game mattered Illinois because I had a lot of
friends that went there and they were merciless when it
(02:19):
would go the other way, so beating them was a
big deal. But the thing as we're talking, it's just
the trying to get yourself reved up. And you all
have had this in your sporting fandom, right. I'm not
going to talk about ratings, the finals games or whatever.
That's in a different context. But the idea of when
you're actually investing in a team, hometown squad, where you
(02:43):
got your degree, whether family members got their degrees at
a place, you know that connectivity that you have, that fandom,
the stuff that drives us to becoming people behind the
microphones here, whether it's on air, working behind the scenes
at the news desk like our guy Steve Descond. We're
all fans. So when anybody gets in one of these
chairs and tells you that they're not fans anymore, they're
(03:05):
lying to you, and just call it what it is.
Because something player, team, coach, there's still that resonance, there's
still that connectivity that makes them a little boy or
a little girl that fell in love with the game
with a player, a team, et cetera. And for me,
the White Sox growing up Southside Chicagoan right, so, but
(03:27):
it had a lot of losing seasons. You know, there's
a lot of sell the team rhetoric. There's all that
kind of conversation. So we're in the back and watching
the Dodgers and the Yankees. They're in the tenth inning here.
Otani had an opportunity with two runners on made the
final out at the top of the tenth here in
a scoreless game. But it became the what does it
(03:49):
feel like to live in because I'm hearing guys screaming.
I got Shay screaming. Maybe a little bit of curse
in non FCC compliancy here we got the oh my god,
up and down the hallway is you know, it's we're
in Los Angeles, so you're gonna you're gonna get some
of that spillover. Not to mention there's always a Yankee
fan in the mix somewhere, But it's just the idea
(04:09):
of living and dying and riding the lightning game for
game in early June when you're going to be playing
in October. That's the thing I love, right that there's
still that passion with the White Sox, like, all right,
how are we gonna blow this game, and maybe you've
got your team, same thing, pick your city, pick your
your sport that you've had that run in September for
(04:33):
your football team, only to watch it torn asunder. Maybe
a guy gets injured, maybe just hit a stretch on
the schedule that doesn't work. All of those things where
you have that moment where you're fully invested and hope.
We talk about it all the time. My daughter actually
finishing her sophomore year. What did they do? They went
(04:53):
out for ice cream, a snack, and then they convened
at someone's house, like fifteen people to watch shash Ank redemption.
He goes, you know, I hope cut both ways in
that one.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Dad.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
I'm like, I've always been saying it right, the best
of things, but also you know, the most dangerous of things.
It'll it'll rip your heart out. And already seeing that,
you know, as we watch some of these young seasons,
promising starts that have gone awry. John Palmerosi joined us
earlier this week talking about some of these second and
(05:25):
third year hitters that you were expecting big returns from.
Whether you're a memorabilia collector, whether you're playing fantasy baseball,
or you're just fan of the new blood, kind of
like we do with the NBA, Right, who's next as
Lebron approaches his fortieth birthday, who's taking that mantle? Who's
going to be the quote unquote face of the league.
(05:47):
All those conversations that we have time and time again.
But the microcosm of that is your team, right, the
team that you follow, the two to three core players
that make up you know, the avid part of the
fan base. And then it's built around, right, that kind
of thing and watching and living and dying with each
of bat, each throw, each inning pitched, each closer appearance
(06:14):
that goes awry, or call to the pen that you're
screaming at your manager.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
You know what I'm talking about. So that's what I
asked Shan.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
It's like, what's it like every day to just there's
an expectation that you're gonna win and that heroics are
around the corner with every at bat. I haven't had
that in a while. And maybe with some of the
teams you cheer for, you can hit me up at
Swollen Dome at Fox Sports Radio. You know, what's that team?
What's that situation where you have that hope that your
(06:45):
your team is going to finally break through, right obviously
being from Chicago, not a lot of titles in my
run on this earth, and I've reached the ripe old
age of fifty. Not a lot bulls go all the
way back to and then you had a Derrick Rose
season Blackhawks.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
It's already a decade, all right.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Though they're talking about reteaming with Patrick Kane, we'll see
Codter Bedard is a fun and exciting young player. What
did it mean in the win column? Same as it
did for Victor Webbin Yama over in San Antonio. Not
a whole hell of a lot, some great highlights, some
great moments, and a lot of hope to what gets
built around them for a future to come. But when
(07:27):
I look at the White Sox, because you know, if
you're a White Sox fan, you can't be a Cub fan.
It's the old rule that I have to teach you
here on a Friday night, when you meet people out
and about from Chicago and they're everywhere, if they tell
you they're a fan of both, they're either about to
try to sell you something, or they or a member
of their family are running for office, or they just
(07:47):
don't want to risk offending anybody, which is really not
a Chicago in anyway because generally they don't care whether
they offend you or not. The sensibilities be damned. But
it's the idea that for years watching the White Sox
and I got my title in two thousand and five
over the Astros still celebrate it. Always go and visit
(08:08):
the Thomas and Canerko statues whenever I can. And then
when the Cubs got there, we second guessed everything Madden
did in terms of his bullpen management, and guess what,
it worked out every time, and they finally broke that
curse with the Red Sox. You saw that happen, but
you had so many other seasons where all right, this
(08:30):
is the year and not the dopey spring training hope
spring's eternal, no a realistic of, hey, this roster actually
looks pretty good, and then you'd wait and see how
it would cripple you along the way. I know for
a lot of Mavericks fans, after last night's lost to
the Celtics in Game one, you getting absolutely drummed. Sure
they battled back to within eight and for a moment
(08:52):
because Smith and I were on here on air here
at Fox Sports, radio. Our guy Steve de Seger was
with us in at the news desk for the purpose
of the show, entertainment value and.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
For what we were talking about.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Yeah, you hope that somehow they were gonna be able
to draw even and keep it a game. But just
as quickly as they clauded eight, it unraveled back to twenty.
And if you're a Maverick fan, sure you got Dirk Novitsky.
You got a lot of folks already trying to crown
Luka Donciz And we've done a little bit of it
here on the show of trying to figure out, as
I said, that next piece of the puzzle, that next
(09:28):
piece to the equation of who's gonna be the face
that everybody says, well, that's the guys the unquestionably the
best player in the NBA. And I'm happy to have
that argument. Whether you like Jokic or maybe you can
don't relate to Jokic because he's seven feet tall. Right,
that's where we start quibbling about some of these things
(09:48):
along the way and deciding because guess what, we can't
do the Hey, that guy's not an American born player.
That was an old argument. Now many of your top
stars are international player folks. Forget now that he's been
here a decade plus, you know, Giannis is still the
Greek freak for a reason, right, go on down the line.
But we watched that game last night and six and
(10:11):
a half points spread, Mavericks playing well the post trade
deadline where you've got the fortified front line and guys
were invisible. Lively who'd been fantastic eighteen minutes of ineffective
basketball off the bench. We'll talk plenty of Porzingis once
we get up and get deeper into Game one and
(10:32):
what we look forward to the rest of the series
with my guy Ryan Hollins when we're able to connect.
But you know, just kind of talking about the Mavericks
after that game, how heartened do you come away going well,
Kyrie won't be that bad because on the other side,
the Boston fans are going well, we bludgeoned them and
Tatum had a terrible game by many metrics, right, so
(10:54):
you know which is going to give which is the
more likely to normalize along the way, Because we talked
about it last night as part of the show. Kyrie
irving eleven straight losses to the Celtics so it's one
of those. Remember he used to have the sage brush
with him. I think it needs to carry that back
in then for game two and make sure he gets
(11:15):
an extra helping along the way, because we're trying to
figure out how do you get back into this series.
You know it's one game, but did one game feel
monumental because normally with the Celtics, right, it's the they're
gonna give you a chance. Well, they didn't give you
a chance in Game one. They came out and they
blitzed it from pillar to post. Yes, you had a
(11:35):
stretch in the third quarter where it got interesting in
baskets got easy for Luca. Sorry if you had the
prop bet for him yesterday it was thirty one and
a half. He left the game with thirty points at
five seventeen left in the fourth quarter. So all of
that to break down what we expect to see come Sunday,
because you get a couple of days off, and what
(11:57):
we look forward to for the rest of the series.
What does Missoula do to keep Porzingis fresh and keep
the rotation working because you got everybody involved in that one.
A lot of Drew Holiday talk. As we get deeper
into the program here on a Friday. But on the
Mavericks side, Jason Kidd exuded calm, Kyrie Irving saying all
(12:18):
the right things, Lucas saying all the right things. But
at the base of it, how do you solve it?
How do you solve a problem like the Celtics see
I'm getting all Way Broadway Musical on a Friday night
as well. We'll talk more NBA Finals Game two, the
chess matches, and certainly the celebration of a unicorn sighting
(12:41):
that's coming up in a minute. But first, are you
tired of endlessly searching for work, applying for jobs and
never hearing back, job openings vanishing into thin air? What
if with just one connection, one connection, you could link
with dozens of companies that are hiring. And what at
that connection was a locally owned business ready to help
without charging a fee. Express and Play Ployment Professionals is
your one connection. Go to expresspros dot com with endless opportunities,
(13:06):
it's time to try something new in your job search.
Let Express Employment Professionals help you. You can start at
expresspros dot Com. Back into the NBA Finals and will
we have a final from Yankee Stadium when we return.
Right now, a lot of dancing on the bass pass.
We'll tell you what it's all about as we continue
here The Jason Smith Show with Me, Mike Harmon, and
(13:28):
Ryan Hollins on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
Hey, gang, this is Jay Glazer, host of Unbreakable, a
Mental Wealth podcast, and every week we will have on
leader from sports entertainment like Sean McVay, Lindsay Vaughn, Michael Phelt,
David Spade, Got Fiemi, and also those who can help
us in between the ears, anyone from a therapist to
someone like Ed Milett for John Gordon. We've all been
(14:04):
through some sort of adversity to get to the top.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
We've all used different tools.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer and Mental Wealth podcast
on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get podcasts.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
Hey, Welcome back in Fox Sports A Radio Jason Smith
Show with Me and Mike Carmon. No Jason Smith tonight,
he is off gallivanting across the southern California world, probably
trying to go to every donut shop he can. Happy
National Donut Day. Whoever thought that up?
Speaker 2 (14:38):
Brilliance.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
We may actually order some for the crew before it's
all said and done, because we need some sugar. Like
to see Steve Desager on three or four donuts. I
think that would be good. See how quickly these scores
roll off his tongue as we go through.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
At Swallow'd home.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Will you find me on Twitter at Fox Sports Radio,
still efforting our guy Ryan Hollins from the technology, technology
and stuff, going back to our old friend Rick Wilde
from the All Star Game. We got Shay in for
Frostburg tonight. Steve is at the news desk, so you'll
hear from them. We've got a bunch of randomness and
(15:15):
grab assery on a Friday. There's a lot of fun
little stories and things that have trickled out. A great
quote from Jalen Brown that had me longing of simpler
times in my life. But I got to ask you,
you know the question I kind of led into as
the well as we paused for the cause. As it were,
(15:35):
the Dodgers have taken a two nothing lead. Now going
to the bottom of the eleventh and we saw a
dancing Jason Hayward.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Doing as they do, the little wiggle dance on second base.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
And the question that we were having, you know, before
the and discussion before the show, was what's it like
to live and die with every at bat, even in
early June, again knowing that your team is going to
be good, knowing that the over under for their win
total is what one oh nine and a half, all
of these things, but still cursing players out for striking out,
(16:11):
asking the umpire, come on, where's that blue after every pitch?
So Shay, I bring you in as you wear your show.
Heyo Tani jersey proudly, Oh Tani jerseys by the way
for sale at Yankee Stadium tonight, and I do my
little raise my hand. Going marketing and sales, you're taking
every dime out of every damn pocket you can while
(16:34):
they're at the ballpark. It's like when you go to
a theme park. Everybody that walks through that door, you're
seeing them as a dollar bill. Whether it's one hundred,
whether it's two, you decide how maybe it's three, depending
on what kind of VIP passes hanging around the neck likewise, here,
I'm gonna turn you over for every dime I can.
Good job, Yankees. We'll talk about that abomination of a
hat in a minute. But Shay, you have been living
(16:56):
and dying with every pitch of this game. What's it
like to carry that much on June seventh?
Speaker 6 (17:02):
All Right?
Speaker 7 (17:02):
I got a problem with people that don't care enough
in June. You know, it's I get it, you're a
white Sox fan. You close out baseball, it's fine. But
it's when you get so much hype and just when
you have a team that was the worst offense in
the last month, when they're supposed to be the best
offense the MLB has ever seen, it really just makes
you think, are we even gonna get to October? Like
(17:25):
it like what what's happening here? And the thing that
pisses me off the most? And like why I'm getting
so upset at every app badest because you think a
change is gonna happen, right, Like, yeah, we're in June,
but it's like these aren't throwaway games. I mean, this
is Dodgers Yankees, you know what I mean? Like Dodgers
Yankees is when it it's it's a culture like there's
no one else that I know that doesn't know the
(17:47):
Dodgers and doesn't know the Yankees. So when it comes
to this game, I'm a little bit more antsy, But
at the same time, it's we're not making a change.
The hitting coach is still the same hitting coach, show Haze,
it's not really the show. Hey, we were expecting. And
then we also have Blue, as you said, just not
really doing the best. So I think it's just more
(18:09):
of like a combination of things that's really getting me
just locked in and just super upset.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
I sure. I just remember we're fifty three days away.
I believe that's the official count to the trade deadline,
and you are uniquely positioned as a club to basically
be that guy with the platinum MasterCard to walk into
the shopping areas. I want all of it, which is
what the Dodgers can do. And they have plenty of
(18:36):
prospects that, while they may be failures and I use
the air quotes here, it's radio failures from Dodger standards,
they would become the top five prospect in almost every
other organization, and they've already gotten time in the big
league level. So you've got those things going for you,
and I think the White Sox are gonna be willing
to trade you, Lewis Robert with everybody else for a
(18:58):
bucket of balls here soon enough.
Speaker 6 (19:00):
It's it's okay. So that's that's the thing.
Speaker 7 (19:03):
Like when let's say with the White Sox, they're losing,
so you obviously they ended it today when when.
Speaker 4 (19:08):
You're look at Steve Desager, not so fast, he went
full lead course, So did they not under the air.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
No, it's still playing.
Speaker 6 (19:17):
Oh, they're still playing okay.
Speaker 7 (19:18):
But what I'm saying is is I think it's hard
from your perspective to understand where I'm coming from, and
as a Dodger fan, like as a White Sox fan,
like whatever you are, you're a Phillies fan, it doesn't matter.
It's like the culture is just so different, it's so
changed where it's I put a lot of it's stress.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Well, but that's the thing, like you're putting a lot
of stress in the regular season. Yeah, because the assumption,
and I think it's fair Steve, if you want to
chime in on this, you're more than welcome to pop
in on this one as well. Is the assumption is
with the expanded wild card round that no matter what,
you're finding a place at the table come October. And
(20:01):
for the Dodgers, given the last decade, the only thing
that matters is October. And what's funny is you brought
up the Dodgers and Yankees and it's funny like we
we oh, they'll get the combatants. You know that last
World Series? What was that nineteen eighty one, right, Fernando, Yeah,
like we're going back forty that's my entire damn life.
Speaker 6 (20:20):
But that's not what I was necessarily talking about.
Speaker 4 (20:22):
No, I get it, you know, yeah, the largess of
the fan bases. But Steve made you're you're here in
Los Angeles and have been.
Speaker 8 (20:31):
And Aaron Judge just sit an RBI single bottom of
the eleventh Dodgers to one lead at Yankee Stadium.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
Well you notice how I cut his microphone.
Speaker 8 (20:41):
He was smart to do that because the Dodgers are
kind of stuck with you. If I can use that
term of using Johann Ramirez as their closer tonight, because
the guy who is their closer already pitched last night a.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
Lot and not well and.
Speaker 8 (20:57):
Three runs, and they had another reliever of the night
before over forty pitches, so they have precious little available
for an extraating game at Yankee Stadium Tonight. Fox TV
will have tomorrow night's game, by the way, and Fox
will have the London game tomorrow morning.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Tomorrow morning, and sandwiched in between there the Belmont state
that is.
Speaker 8 (21:14):
Correct, which is not quite where it used to be,
but still in the state of New York.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
So kind of a big deal.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
So you know, you've got that rolling up, and certainly
tonight usually an Apple Friday night game.
Speaker 8 (21:26):
Yes, which would be exclusive, yeah, streaming, but because it's
Yankees and Dodgers, anticipating the backlash, they let the Yankees
channel and the Dodgers channel carry tonight's game.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Give me find out how much about give back they
got financially. Financially, there's got to be a little bit
of a give back. I gotta f Yeah, there's some
sort of games and institution.
Speaker 8 (21:49):
Jen Carlo Stanton just struck out two outs bottom of
the eleventh, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
The power and pageantry of early June baseball.
Speaker 8 (21:58):
Stanton was up with bases loaded in the eighth and
flew out as the people went wild for a flyout
to left center field.
Speaker 4 (22:05):
Well We've seen a couple of balls that you know,
with no sound on right, like it was in the
back and well.
Speaker 8 (22:11):
Hit it's Yankee Stadium, left center field and place.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
Yeah exactly, just absolutely dying in the office like, oh
he got it.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
It's like, no, I guess he'd.
Speaker 8 (22:19):
Pop out to catch your game over and eleven innings
don Yankees won.
Speaker 6 (22:24):
It is a final.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
Potential for chaos there, all right, Shay's gonna breathe a
little easier now that one's in the books.
Speaker 8 (22:30):
And next up, we're keeping our eyes on those White
Socks trying to end a franchise long losing streak of
fourteen in a row. The White Sox got back to
back homers in the seventh. They are leading six to
two over the Boston Red Sox in the bottom of
the eighth right now or the back to back homers.
We're in the sixth inning. It's bottom of the eighth
right now.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
Yeah, psychologically, still riding the lightning with that. You know,
while we have you, Steve and the microphone is open,
why don't we give it to Steve Desager for the
extended update of everything going on in our sporting world.
I know, Caitlyn Clark had herself a game in front
of a twenty thousand seed arena.
Speaker 8 (23:05):
And it was at a winless team in Washington, a
team that's zero and eleven now Indiana came in with
a two to nine record. The Fever win at eighty
five eighty three rookie Caitlin Clark with thirty points from
three point range. She was seven of thirteen. Clark with
six assists and eight turnovers. The other three games tonight
in the WNBA all just started a half an hour ago.
(23:26):
So that includes defending champion Vegas at five and two,
hosting and tied with Seattle in the second quarter. Nineteen
nineteen Saturday, it'll be nine and two New York at
nine to oh Connecticut the baseball, Yes, it's final at
Yankee Stadium. The Yanks eight game winning streak is over.
In eleven innings Dodgers two to one. Dodgers got a
(23:46):
two run double from Taoska Hernandez in the top of
the eleventh. Great start from LA's Yoshinobu Yamamoto, no decision.
He's still six and two this year, but seven scoreless
innings and just two hits allowed and no Juan Soto
for the New York Yankees tonight. He was out with
a sore forearm. MRI showed inflammation, but nothing more serious
(24:08):
than that. It's the guy who's leading the American League
with the batting average of three to eighteen and already
has seventeen homers and fifty three RBIs this season. But
no Soto tonight, So the Yankees, who had won nineteen
of twenty three, take the l this evening. And the
Cincinnati Reds are getting closer to the five hundred mark.
They've won six in a row. They beat the Cubs
three to two, winning pitcher Nick Lodolo six and two.
(24:30):
He had seven strikeouts in his six innings of work,
just one run aloud attendance in Miami ten Thoy seven
eighteen with the run bottom of the eighth, the Marlins
beat Cleveland three to two. That ends Miami's four game
losing streak. They had entered with a record of twenty
one and forty one. Another win for the Orioles six
to three at Tampa Bay Os hit three homers. Baltimore's
(24:50):
record is forty and twenty two, the Dodgers forty and
twenty five. By comparison, Washington edged Atlanta two to one,
beating Chris Sale who had entered with an eight to
one record had ten strikeouts in seven innings. But the
Nats beat the Braves Pittsburgh three to nothing over Minnesota.
Twins had lost four straight and Milwaukee had lost three
in a row, but got five runs in the second
(25:12):
inning and then just kept scoring later ten nothing Brewers
win at Detroit. Among the games in progress, not only
the White Sox leading bottom of the eighth six to
two against Boston, Giants now lead five to top of
the ninth at Texas. The Mariners scored seven in the
top of the first and are now holding on at
Kansas City, MS nine to seven over the Royals top
of the eighth inning, seventh inning stretch at Saint Louis,
(25:34):
Cardinals tied with the Rockies five to five. And then
we've got three late games that include the A's scoreless
with the Blue Jays in the bottom of the fourth.
It's kind of an weaknightly thing on the show is
check the A's attendance that'll be coming up in one rowers,
No doubt we'll see if they hit well, they're not
going to get When Miami got tonight I'll just call
that already now. Speaking of numbers, last night's NBA Finals
(25:57):
opener averaged only eleven million TV viewers. Going into last night,
this year's NBA playoff ratings were down thirteen percent. NBA
Finals Game two is Sunday night at Boston. Dallas will
be hosting games three and four Wednesday and Friday of
next week. Boston still at home this weekend and in
the regular season at home, the Celtics went thirty seven
(26:18):
and four and last night took the opener of these
finals at home by eighteen points, led by twenty nine
in the first half, and as we mentioned on last
night's show, Boston as a team had nine block shots
last night, Dallas only nine assists as a team. The
Stanley Cup Finals starts Saturday, Edmonton at Florida and at
the French Open. Carlos Alcarez won his semi final in
(26:40):
five sets, beating the new number one come bunday Yanick
center of Italy six ' three in the fifth.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Back to you, thanks so much, Steve.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
So much going on in our sporting universe, Steve so
on all of it as we go through. We've got
attendance games and so much more some great audio coming
out of Game one, as well as some behind the
scenes of Get to Know Your Stars and one piece
that we'll do in about ten minutes that I ponder
it and I think of a simple life and what
(27:09):
I would do with it and how I'd squander it, because,
let's face it, once you actually are in those situations,
you realize, oh wait, it's half over. We'll get into
that coming up in a minute. But it was funny
as part of the update because you know my misery
of players Once upon a Time great now gone, going
back to you mentioned Chris Sale In the update part
of the Atlanta Braves. Once upon a Time White Sox
(27:33):
great Mark Burley evidently made an appearance and had some
comments about the end of his tenure with the White Sox,
and yes, I'm taking full advantage of this because this
is just glorious as you go through that he'd wanted
to stay and would have taken less money to stay
with the Socks, and that Ryan's Doff basically said naw,
(27:53):
we're good and we're gone. So that's where he ended
up going to Miami in Toronto. Before it was all
said and done, Brely a borderline hall of Famer when
you look at his career stats, especially the way starting
pitching has changed. With a two hundred and fourteen career win.
Yay White Sox seven to now bottom of eight. Maybe
(28:13):
I'll actually get that elusive victory pop some sort of
celebratory carbonated drink around here or something.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (28:22):
We'll figure it out as we go. A lot of
NBA Finals talk. Certainly the order of the day last night,
we celebrated the greatness that was Christaps porzingis the Unicorns
sighting that we expected, but could hardly have expected the
greatness that we saw in that first half and certainly
(28:43):
during spurts of the second. And what was important for
me watching porzingis, look, he's gonna put some points up.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
That's fine.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
It's gonna do some of that, you know damage when
he comes in off the bench. But the bigger issue
was defense. What a force he was in the low post,
altering shots, forcing indecision by Kyrie irving the staff that
Steve gave during the update. You know, they had nine
block shots and the Mavericks just had nine assists for
(29:15):
the night. You had three assists total from Luca Doncis
and Kyrie Irving when Luca is regularly the alright, he's
bordering on a triple double. He had one assist last night,
Kyrie just two. Indecisive with the basketball, not swinging it around,
the extra passes, stagnant offense. So that's the obvious change
(29:37):
for Game two from the Mavericks side of things. But
for the Celtics, now you've got that first game under
your belt with Christaps Porzingis being able to make a
play and being able to be a force on both
ends of the court. Shae is looking to be tagged in. Well,
we've got Ryan Hollins.
Speaker 9 (29:59):
What's going on?
Speaker 4 (30:00):
He's doing the microphones. I'm like, what do you got?
You got an update? You got a breaking news?
Speaker 3 (30:03):
What am I like?
Speaker 4 (30:04):
You?
Speaker 9 (30:05):
Are you doing a great job being me?
Speaker 3 (30:07):
Like, well, you know what, I.
Speaker 4 (30:10):
Made excuses for a few guys, and then no, I
couldn't be you, Like I haven't figured out that that
voice cadence quite so well just yet, Like Jason, I
can do right, it's been a decade, five nights a week.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
Let's hear. Oh my god, it's about the match. I mean, Jason,
what are we going to do?
Speaker 4 (30:36):
I mean, you've heard the promo sounds like Sam Kinnison,
just not quite as good.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Scream yell, you.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
Don't know what you're talking about, Harmon, shut up, Prossburg.
What was the last time the Lakers won a real championship?
I mean all of those kind of things. Yeah, yeah,
that's what we get into.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
Well, good to hear you.
Speaker 4 (30:55):
You were just starting to do a little bit of
the the poor zingis talk since you and I on
our Sunday show had kind of broken that down at length.
His availability availability obviously being the most important asset and
skill for a player, but the fact that he was
able to play on both ends and from the defensive side,
(31:17):
what he was able to do clogging the middle, to
me is some of those things that Missoula walking off
the court last night had to be kind of humming
to himself about how happy he was.
Speaker 9 (31:30):
Well, he allowed the Celtics to switch, and then when
Dallas said, okay you're switching, we'll switch, let's see who's
the best switching team. For one, that's what Boston does.
But Porzing has not only defended the switch, used his
at length. I don't think he was perfect, but when
they switched on to him, he just turned and shot
right over the Maverick defenders. You know, and for those
(31:52):
who don't know, Porzingis is a good seven to two
seven three. Like when I remember his rookie year, I
stood up next to him and he towered me, dude,
like he literally towered me. So yeah, that was a
huge difference. And I don't think that Dallas was prepared.
And everybody's given to talk about you know, Kyrie and
(32:14):
you know the bad blood with Kyrie and how pumped
up Kyrie is and how the fans are gonna be.
Per Zingis has something to prove here.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
He he just a little bit.
Speaker 9 (32:23):
Yeah, he was in he was in Dallas and kind
of had you know, it wasn't it wasn't much, but
remembered the little weird rumblings that he felt like Luca,
you know, you know, had the ball in his hands
too much. And know Perzingis doesn't post up enough, so
you know he was incentivized.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
Oh as a center position. I mean as you watched
it unfold during your career, Ryan, it changed a lot, right.
It was no longer back to the basket and let's
hammer down low and you know, feed the inside game,
you know, kick it back out that kind of thing.
All of a sudden, a lot more seven footers hanging
around at the three point arc, and Chris Tops wanted
(33:01):
to get fed because that's how he was brought up
and played overseas and thought that that was going to
be the next iteration.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
And certainly when he was healthy in New York, he
had the run of the court for the couple of years.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
And so he goes with Luca and I don't know
where where they're at in their relationship right, some of
the stuff Chandler Parsons was trying to say versus Luca,
kind of brushing that off in.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
His presser the other day.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
But the reality is, I mean, yeah, you got guys
on both sides that want to prove that, you know,
their new team got the better of it, and it's,
you know, the old lost lover thing.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
It's like, oh, you'll regret when I'm gone. Maybe I will,
maybe I won't. We'll see.
Speaker 9 (33:44):
No, Yeah, it was, and you know, he had a smirk.
He played well. I'm sure he's been hearing the critics,
but I think we're all concerned about how he would
come back. Sure, and you know, you hear so much, Mike,
and you noticed the teams go, well, he'll be back.
You know, he could play today, but we're just going
to sit him out and rest them. The guys get
(34:05):
out there, they're no good. You know. That was a
big question markcause nobody had seen him in live action
and he was just fine out there. It looked like
he really genuinely hadn't missed the beat.
Speaker 4 (34:15):
No, that was about his effortless a reinsertion. So it's
always that curiosity. I'd love to see some of the
training videos, some of the rehab work that he was
doing behind the scenes, because we talked about it a
little bit yesterday, Ryan, and it's something that we talked
about with the Eastern Conferences. They had the luxury that
they were never forced to say, well, him at sixty
(34:37):
five percent or him at seventy percent, or whatever percentage
you want to ascribe to it. They never had to
do that and pull the trigger to maybe rush him
back in, and instead they get through all those rounds
and they got an extra week off for him to
get right or as right as he's going to be
at this time of the year.
Speaker 9 (34:54):
Yeah. Yeah, so their depth ends up winning out. And
think about that. Indiana CEA, you know, there aren't too
many teams where you say, well, we'll take their starting
center off and they'll be just fine. And you know,
Boston was, man, I mean, this is one of the deeper.
I mean they've literally got you know, two starting five's
and you come in and you think about Al Horford,
(35:15):
how well you know he played, and now OL's absolutely
a baller. But you've got guys who can not just
play minutes, but playoff minutes, you know, meaningful minutes in
a game six or game four, game five, or in
the playoffs. So it just shows Boston's death. Man, it does.
And you know we spoke about perzing As being a
(35:35):
big factor. Why because Dallas plays big. You know, they
they get into the paint. Lucas a bully and then
you know he keep those guys from getting you know,
rim run lobs. What they did is they just corralled Luca.
They made him, you know, score out the off his
left and they're like, well, look you're gonna have to
make that pass. PJ. Washington is gonna have to beat it.
Dereck Jones Jr. Are gonna have to beat us. You
(35:55):
got to score over our length. And Perzingis changes their
dynamic from a switch defense, you know, with speed to
his shot blocking in length and you know the defensive
end is where he's been a big difference maker since
he's been playing well as a Celtic.
Speaker 3 (36:10):
There it is.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
There's part one of a long night of breaking it down.
What does the Dallas squad do to respond past the
ball more? Yeah, that's the nice, easy one. We'll get
into that coming up about fifteen minutes. Ryan Hollins at
the Ryan Hollins ten years in the league working for
the Houston Rockets now and analysts for them, and of
course my teammate on Sunday mornings here Fox Sports Radio
(36:33):
six to nine Pacific and with me tonight in Jason
Smith instead as we come to you live from the
ti rack dot Com studios, and coming up next, Jalen
Brown gave us a great quote, No, not about what
happened on the court, but what he did with his
time off, and it got me wondering, what the hell
would I do.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
We'll talk about it next here on Fox.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm.
Speaker 4 (37:01):
Hey, welcome back in tire rack dot Com, Fox Sports
Radio Studios, Jason Smith Show with Me, Mike Harmon, No
Jason Smith Tonight, It's me and I guy Ryan Hollins,
as we ride through the next four hours, entertaining and forming,
perhaps enraging, but certainly engaging you along the way at
the Ryan Hollinds on Twitter where you find him find
(37:21):
me over at Swollen Dome. Now, Jalen Brown, part of
the victorious Boston Celtics contingent, had himself a nice game.
Everybody could have had a nice game. It didn't matter
because the story of the night became Christops porzingis at
least from the Boston side of things. We'll get back
into him and get back into the game itself in
(37:41):
a moment. But Jalen Brown gave us an absolute gem
as related to how he spent his off time, and
it got me wondering, and Ryan Hollins, I bet you're
gonna wonder the same thing.
Speaker 10 (37:54):
That's probably been the hardest thing because there's been so
much time. It's been almost ten days. You know, a
lot of our guys probably spend time with their family,
but you know, I don't have a family. Single, So
I'm watching Harry Potter.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
Think you got ten days? Just said, I'm binging Harry Potter.
That's how I'm spending my time.
Speaker 3 (38:15):
Ryan.
Speaker 4 (38:15):
If suddenly you had ten days, no kids to chase
around and get to activities or to and from school,
and you were left to your own devices, obviously you're
doing some training or whatever if we put it in
the context of basketball, but think about that for ten days,
what would you do?
Speaker 9 (38:32):
Well? The one thing I would do I played in Boston,
played in Boston, and in Dallas, I'd go, like see
a movie by myself, go solo to the movie theater
a lot.
Speaker 4 (38:42):
I was gonna say, you got ten days, that's a
lot of movies. Yeah, it don't really make the best
of that, amclus.
Speaker 9 (38:47):
Dude, Dude, I'd see like everything that was out and
then you know, I'm a big gamer. You know that
video games. But one of the things that I would
do is I would also just go and check out
like the uh you know, I wouldn't play the games.
I'd just been series so it and never did the
Harry Potter. But like you find your good TV series
(39:09):
and you just go at it.
Speaker 4 (39:10):
It's funny though, if you got the Harry Potter, they
I saw the trailer today for the new Quidditch.
Speaker 3 (39:14):
Game they're putting out. Funny how that works?
Speaker 4 (39:17):
Jaylen Brown talking about binging the movies and here we
got this see because you and I, I mean, we're
chasing the kids.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
Shay is center shaking his head, going, man, what the
damage I could do with ten day?
Speaker 7 (39:31):
Oh god, there was already a Harry Potter game that
came out recently too.
Speaker 8 (39:34):
Yeah, yeah, there you go.
Speaker 6 (39:35):
Died out though. Well you had a lot of hype.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
Well but it got a big investment, and it's like anything.
You'd look at it and look at sales and just say,
you know what I've done? And with movies, you just
put it straight to streaming. Yeah it's three weeks later.
Didn't that just come out?
Speaker 3 (39:51):
Yep?
Speaker 4 (39:52):
Here we are, yeah, ten days. I think I just
sleep like I actually came into the studio today, like
that would be the first order of business.
Speaker 3 (40:01):
Man.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
Look, I don't get off normally. I'm yelling at this
jackass till eleven o'clock at night. I get home at
midnight and then I'm up getting my girls up and
moving at six o'clock. Man, there's just I haven't had
a full night sleep. I think tonight last night into
tonight because they had an event they were going to.
Today was the first time that I wasn't, you know,
up less than six hours after you know, getting off air.
(40:23):
So i'd sleep. The bags disappeared slightly under my eyes,
just like that, Hollins. I'm telling you, hold on. After
ten days, I could be Benjamin Button for crying out loud.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
You don't my handle come back.
Speaker 9 (40:37):
You don't get a chance to, like, you know, sleep
during the day.
Speaker 4 (40:44):
You try to crash out, but there's always stuff to
do when I miss out Mike.
Speaker 7 (40:49):
So I was Mike's producer for a while on the weekends,
and he would have to be up at five am
for our show. Right, I'll be getting text at one am,
two am like what he wants to do?
Speaker 6 (41:00):
Harman, what are you doing that?
Speaker 3 (41:02):
I got problems? What are you gonna do?
Speaker 4 (41:05):
You know, someone's gotta compare sound self injury reports. All right,
we're back into the NBA Finals next
