This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome inside. Happy Friday. At least it probably is
to everybody outside the state of Florida after what's happening
right now. We're live for the Tirac dot Com studios.
Tirac dot com I help you get there. An unmatched selection, fast,

recommended installers. Tyrack dot com is the way tire buying

(00:51):
should be. Well, it looks like we're not going to
be awarding the Stanley Cup tonight. No, it could be
headed back for something that ninety nine percent of fans
have never seen in their lives. Right now, end of
the second period, the Edmonton Oilers lead the Panthers three

(01:12):
nothing Zach Hyman on a breakaway with a couple minutes
ago on the second period. Edmonton now leads Florida three
to nothing going to the third period, Edmonton wins. They
go back for Game seven of the Stanley Cup Final
on Monday, and Edmonton has a chance to do what
hasn't been done in any sport since the NHL in
nineteen forty two, and that is a team can come

(01:35):
back from three games to none down to win a championship.
We've seen it before. We've seen three to none obviously
the Red Sox and the Yankees. We've seen teams come
back from three down to win big series in hockey.
The Kings did it a few years ago against the Sharks.
We almost saw the Heat do it against the Celtics
last year, or a couple of years ago in the
Eastern Conference finals. So we've seen teams come back from

(01:57):
three down. We've seen them win once in a while.
We've seen them for Game seven. But nineteen forty two,
I don't think anybody listening Mike can remember the last
time someone's come from three down to win a championship.
And the Oilers are twenty minutes away from potentially getting
set to set that up on Monday. It's incredible.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Well, you know, we always talk about seeing things for
first times, and you know, random stats that show up
for us that say, hey, this has been done for
the first time. You're like, really, I don't think so,
but really, but here we have it. You know, all
they wanted to do was crawl back to Edmonton and
they blitzed out of the gate. The other thing nobody's
heard since nineteen forty two a national show in the

(02:40):
evening lead with hockey.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
This is true. Well, maybe in Terns.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
I'm just kidding, we've done that, or Montreal, and you
and I have done that a bunch in years past,
particularly you know when we had those great Kings Blackhawks battles,
and you know, Frostburg and I had our great battles
on air over those as well.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
But certainly, you know, this is.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Historic stuff and makes folks reevaluate the life and times
of Connor McDavid. And and maybe now you know, hope
becomes less of a dangerous thing, especially if you have
a baseball team that sucks because people forget what cow
many outs are in it in and or you know,
random guy who trashes one of the players on his

(03:24):
favorite team and then is kissing his ass to ask
for an autograph. You know, those kind of things happen
all over. Uh huh, sure, sure it happens.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
You're a guy.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
But look, look we'll get to the Mets and the
continuation of the Grimmace era in a few minutes. But rallies, Yeah, Like,
I don't know what you would say at this point
if you're the coach of a team and you're up
three zip and now suddenly you're down three is that
now it's good for Florence. We'll be going home to
play game seven. I don't know what to saying, Like, like,
what do you say, Hey, let's get back to being

(03:55):
that team we were the first three days, Like, like,
I don't know what to say. And look, there's a
reason why we see this potentially happening in hockey a
little bit more than other sports because hockey the the
home ice, the home field advantage doesn't mean as much
as it does in other sports. You can win on
the road, you have a hot goalie, you can win,
and and the momentum from game to game. In hockey,

(04:15):
it just doesn't carry over like it does in other sports. Right,
it's it's a little bit easier to win on somebody's
home ice in hockey than it is to win on
somebody's home floor in the NBA, Major League Baseball. It's
it just happens that way. So it's it's no surprise.
And in hockey we potentially see this. But man, I'm
telling you, I mean, this is this will this will
be history on Monday night people are watching TV. I've

(04:36):
never I've never seen this before in my life and
I may never see this again if Edmonton comes back
and wins the Stanley Cup.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yeah, I mean I always question how much home home
ice or home court or whatever in this day and
age really means, you know, with with travel being different
than it was once upon a time, Uh, and all
the you know, just physical recovery tools that are there.
You know, it looks psychologically it's got to be better,

(05:03):
no question about it.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
But you know, in this particular case, you'd love.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
The in season hard knocks kind of thing to cross
over into another sport for a moment. So after this game,
what happened in the locker room, and after this game,
after it became three to two, what happened in the
locker room and all of a sudden, that girl that
became famous for you know, exposure, she got a lot
of exposure. Suddenly she's creeping around again. So all's right

(05:33):
with the world. After she was pretending she was going
to go into hiding, so you know, they rallied back
and it's it's really as curious thing and it look,
it gets us to lead with hockey.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
We celebrate the sport.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
And when you've got one of the best stars in
the game that you get to talk about for another
couple of days, that's good. They do need to buy
these guys a bigger desk. Maybe some of the money
spent on Messier's coat can go.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Towards a bigger dann No, mess needs that coat, man,
it's a good looking and he needs that. He needs
that smoking jacket that he's on the I really, Helvett,
I realized like to have a pipe in the other hand, Yes,
that's right. As we left off last time, Mercutio was
trying to bring back a message to Romeo. Juliette was
shut up in the tower and was not able to
go about, like really, I want to pipe, I want

(06:22):
a blanket, and I want a sheep dog at his feet,
like that's.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
What I'm like a man.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Either that or he's hosting an episode of well reenactment
of Clue. Let's go for the main stage. No, it's
but I mean this is great stuff. I mean, you
go through the year and look at the Panthers at
home twenty six, thirteen and two, twenty six, eleven and
four on the road, so consistency Edmonton twenty eight nine

(06:48):
and fourd home twenty one, eighteen and two away from home.
So now it's gonna be said unless we get some
miraculous comeback here, which, let's face it, we've seen some
really strange ass stuff between hockey and soccer and well
the world of Major League Baseball in recent days. So

(07:09):
never say never. But right now, got to feel pretty
good if you're an Edmonton fan.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Updates to come on this again. Going to third period,
Oilers twenty minutes away from forcing Game seven of the
Stanley Cup Final. Meanwhile, because it is I feel like
Friday Night is like WNBA and CFL night, right like, hey,
we have it.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Now get that I on Spotlight going and.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Caitlin Clark and the Fever win again. They beat the
Dream ninety one seventy nine Caitlin Clark sixteen points, seven assists,
four rebounds, shoots well from the floor, game high plus thirteen,
the fever creeping closer to five hundred. Kitlan Clark is
really playing well. O.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Wait, that schedule thing we talked about at the beginning
of the season that was co opting it became a
local point for Oh yeah, really, what I gotta start
getting right credits? Man, I know that could get me
into some kind of union to take care of me.

Speaker 5 (08:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Butly, here's the thing, Well, what do I say? Information
is free, People want to take it. They take it,
but listens. But the big news today is the first
round of WNBA All Star voting has come out, and
there's a couple of wow moments here and plus I
think this is a real great idea what we should
do for the WNBA All Star Game. So voting comes
out and Asia Wilson, two time MVP Best Player All

(08:24):
Around player in the league, leads the All Star voter.
She's got about two hundred and seventeen thousand votes. She
leads Caitlin Clark by a thousand. Kaitlin Clark has two
hundred and sixteen thousand votes. It's neck and neck, and
then you're looking at at Aleiah Boston is third with
one hundred and seventy one thousand.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
And her kid's allowed to pop ten.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
I don't know, but I think it's weirdy age.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
Is there an age limit?

Speaker 1 (08:46):
I mean, just just I mean, because you just got
to be conspiracy theory. But here's the first setting of
the first report of votings that come out, and Caitlin
Clark is really really high, but she's not quite as
high as who the best player in the league is,
right thousand below of Asia Willis?

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Dare you?

Speaker 1 (09:03):
I mean, it's just such no, no, no, you know,
it's like in a video game, like when I used
to get so pissed off, like when I would play
like PGA Tour on Genesis or European PGA Tour, and
I'm playing great and I'm like eighteen nineteen under parm
like flipping Tiger woods Man, I'm like eighteen. Of course,
everybody else is like six seven hundred, but one guy
is like right now like minus seventeen. I'm like, come on, man,

(09:24):
you're just making it so I have to make shots
at the end. How is I'm shooting so incredibly well?
Everybody else man. Everybody else is minus seven, but one
guy is one stroke back of me, not minus ten,
not minus twelve. He's come always one stroke back of me.
Like I feel that way with this, Like, hey, here's
here's Asia Wilson, but Kaitlyn Clark is a thousand behind.
So like, is Kitlin Clark really a thousand behind? Or

(09:46):
Todasiah Wilson get vaulted up by a thousand votes? But
it doesn't matter because the best part is this time
last year when WNBA All Star voting was announced, the
leader had thirty five thousand votes. There you go, all right,
I mean, just think about that for a second. What
did I say, Caitlin Clark magic and Larry effect on
the NBA. She's magic and Larry. Remember that thirty five

(10:06):
thousand votes the leading vote get her last year? Two
hundred and sixteen thousand votes, same time this year, and
everybody's in the high hundred thousands, right, The top ten
are all the high hundred thousands. And this is an
unbelievable story. Now this gets me to my idea for
the All Star Game.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
Oh, let's go okay.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Now, And it's been floated out there and I've seen
a people talk about this and hey, if the rookies
are so such a big deal, let's play rookies versus
the Vets in the All Star Game. And I'm like, eh,
you know, I don't know about that. I mean, yeah,
it would be fun to see Caitlyn Clark and Angel
Reese on the same team for a little bit. Be
fun to see some but they would just get boat raced, right, like,

(10:43):
I mean, they would just it wouldn't be fun. Like,
I don't know that. I don't know how much they
would get the ball across half court.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
Well, you one of your inside post position players.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Yeah, I mean Cameron Brinks wouldn't play, So what are
you gonna do? Right? So I think that's you know,
that's something I would go, Yeah, that sounds fun in theory.
But when the score is fifty five to six and
they're changing teams at halftime, I would think, okay, you know,
we gotta do something else. But how about this, right?
How about it? Because it's such a big deal, right,
such a big deal of who selected the teams, and
you heard a lot of whispers it's political. Riqueo Gunbiwally

(11:15):
pulled out of the the evaluation process for the All
Star team for Team USA because of the politics of it.
How about if you had Team USA against the best
of the WNBA, all Team USA, and then the rest
of your team comes from the best players in the WNBA,
people who are not on Team USA. You give Team

(11:36):
USA an extra game or two here to give them
an extra game to get ready, get ready to go
on warm, and you get the rest of the WNBA
on going. Okay, we'll show you what we thought we
think we are. Think about that back court of Kaitlyn
Clark and a gun Biwally. There's no shots for anybody
else because first of all, a Gunbawally will take all
of them, and then Kaitlyn Clark will take whatever is left,
but there won't be any because she takes like eighty
shots a game. But just that there's a lot of

(11:58):
talent there.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
And then you really don't like her, No, I like it.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
She takes so much and she's why you because I
let she takes so many shots. She leads the league
in shots in total shots and she's like fortieth in
shot in sha Yeah you know, she's only a thirty seven,
takes so many shots. I mean she's yeah, No, she's

(12:22):
my dream. But I'm just gonna commit to keep shooting.
How long are you gonna do that? For? Well, for me,
it would be like like like, you know, four shots,
they would say stop shooting. She's on like year seven
of going ten for twenty four of your night. Man,
it is fantastic. But look, she's a big player, she
makes shots, a second leading scoring player in the NBAWNBA.
You know, she's got a little bit of a chip
on their shoulder. A couple of players that haven't been

(12:44):
uh selected or in consideration, you know, they got a
little bit of a chip on their shoulder. You know
they're wondering, Hey, how political is this really? That suddenly
here's the team that's out there. Everybody's playing together, we
know selected on the team. I think that would be
kind of fun to see Team USA against the best
of the WNBA.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
I really see do we have?

Speaker 1 (13:02):
I mean, is it?

Speaker 3 (13:03):
Well, you would get a Leah Boston, you would get
Angel Reese, sure right? So I mean you're talking about
another couple of your top vote getters along the way.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
So yeah, I mean.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
Look, all of that is to try to figure out eyeballs, right,
And I know the Olympic selection committee, you know they
doth protest too much about the rules of engagement and
whatever else Kevin Durant and whoever whoever else wants to do.
There are steps to this, like, oh, there's not It's
like there's millions every job, every profession and all the

(13:37):
way through.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
There's ways to cut lines.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
Now, if you do it at a theme part, you
might get rated out and sent down to the park.
So you gotta be careful there as you should be
scourge of humanity, just like people that don't return their carts.
But that's a whole other dietrope for another time. Just
kind of roll them in your general direction as you're
standing there. But it's the the idea that you know,
you can get a number of these young up and

(14:02):
coming stars into the game and garner more eyeballs for
the rest of your teams, the rest of the players
that you're trying to get over all the little vignettes
that you get to do about their personalities and who
they are. Yeah, it's a complete cell job, absolutely no
question about it. I mean, the Aces have sold out

(14:22):
every game. Great story. You've got Angel Reese with their
seven straight double doubles. You don't have to like it
just figure out how to get in and out involved,
and then we just keep going from there.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
I mean, think about it. Many there would be some
kind of offense out there, and it would be a game.
It really would It would really be a game because
it'd be so much pressure on Team USA to show, hey,
we're the best, because you know that in the selection
process they talk to the players and you know, some
of them, Yes, let's take this player. No, let's not
take the What would you feel like if we took Caitlin?

(14:54):
What if we took somebody else? What if we didn't?
You know, the whole camaraderie of it is out there. Yeah,
I think I think you'd get a lot of deal. Yeah,
I'd like a shot at them. Yeah, I can't play now.
I can't crack this roster for some reason. Oh, I'd
like to see that. It would be it would be
the most competitive All Star game that you would you
would see in sports that in years. Yeah, yeah, because

(15:17):
I mean, look, even even the baseball player said afterwards,
how'd you feel with with home fielder? I remember, I remember,
you know what interviewed. I remember interviewing Brian Wilson of
the Giants right after the All Star Game, And I said,
I remember because you know Brian Wilson, he was a dude.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
Man, he was was just Brian Wilson, the other one
his birthday two.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Oh that's true. Now this is not Brian Wilson, beach boy.
This Brian Wilson, former Giants reliever. And I said, what
was it like? I said, what was it like? Man?
Was it was exciting getting out there and knowing that
if he won the game, the National League was going
to get home field advantage. And he goes to me, oh, man,
we had meetings every day we've been here talking about this,
talking about playing hard, making sure we go out there.

(15:56):
Everybody was on the same page. You wouldn't believe it,
I said, really. He goes, no, we didn't talk about
that at all. No one really cared. And I think
you said something like, what do I care If I'm
giving home field advantage to the Phillies. I don't care
about they wouldn't give it to the Yankees if they
want to. I'm gonna try to win, but I don't care.
We're not getting it, so doesn't matter to me.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
Right, It's it's like the in season tournament. I don't
care wait, you're gonna get me five hundred grand if
I win it? Okay, I'm in right and say the
same thing.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
You know.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
Here it's personal pride and a showcase, you know, and
another spotlight on the league, which which is good, right,
it's it's another another opportunity to showcase the non Caitlin
Clarks of the world, I guess for lack of about
even though she'll be there, but you know, to get
everybody else, uh, some extra juice for the league's second
half and obviously for the Olympics coverage. Because basketball is

(16:47):
as good as the women's team has been, it's never
been a focal point. It's been gymnastics and swimming, and
right now it's setting up to be gymnastics and swimming
once again. As much as we you know, have surge
of love for the WNBA and women's basketball, women's sports
right a huge, huge moment in time here, it's still

(17:09):
the women's basketball squad is distant to the return of
some own biles. I mean, she's got documentaries coming out
and all this other stuff. And then we've watched the
last couple of days it's you know, swim trials and
some of the crazy ass numbers and records and proposals
and everything else going on that that takes center stage

(17:30):
always and forever.

Speaker 1 (17:33):

friend Mike Harmon in about a half hour way do
we tell your story from Major League Baseball tonight? Let
me just say this, one of us is going to
be really happy to bring it to you, the other
one not so much. Go to hell, but joining is

(19:14):
now the hotline to break down all the latest news
in the NBA. NBA Insider extraordinary longtime friend of the
show Mark Medina. You can follow him on Twitter at
Mark g Underscore Madina. That's at Mark g Underscore Medina.
Mark Again, I need to apologize, like I apologize to
Dan Woiki last night. Uh, this is the second of

(19:35):
the last three years. You did not get the Lakers
head coaching job. I am sorry about that.

Speaker 5 (19:40):
Hey, I'm still in the running for the assistant coaching
position here. I mean JJ Ruddick has got to fill
out his staff here. I could be a great voice
for him.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Okay, all right, Well, if you still I didn't know
you were still in the running. I'm sorry that I'm up.

Speaker 5 (19:53):
Gladdick does his podcast, so we do the radio work
like they't be able to overlap.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
Hey, at some point, I feel like I can manage
the Mets. Right, Gottlieb is coaching with him to day,
Reddick is coaching the Lakers. I'm about eighteen months away
from managing the Mets. It's gonna work.

Speaker 5 (20:10):
And how about this, I'm sure you could establish a
great relationship with the lebron by drinking some wine exactly exactly.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
See, there you go. We can figure I'll tell him
how many times I go to Blaze Pizza, He'll love me.
You won't absuately love me?

Speaker 3 (20:24):
No, and then you'd start yelling at him for that
time he was supposed to show up in your neighborhood
and didn't And yeah it was the gig.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
Yeah, but if i'm his head coach, I gotta let
that go.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
I think I know if you'll never let that go.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
What do you think, Mark, where it's been twenty four
hours of dust has settled. Where are you on the
JJ Reddick hiring for the Lakers.

Speaker 5 (20:42):
Yeah, it's really fascinating because I think from the beginning
and up till now, I haven't had necessarily a problem
with the Lakers hiring JJ Reddick. What I do have
a problem with is the context. I mean, I think
that it is a little bit disconcerting the way they
got through JJ Reddick I and why they went after
Dan Hurley. I am under not so the assumption being

(21:07):
told that it wasn't like it came out of nowhere.
They had discussions prior to that infamous meetium where Dan
Early and his wife flew out to LA But it
did give me some pause that this might be a
sign that there wasn't exact synergy with everyone in the
front office, exact vision, and when he talk to people

(21:28):
within the Lakers, you know their vision can be a
little bit clear. But the problem is there's so many
objectives that are trying to achieve that seems impossible because
the objective number one is they want a coach that
can maximize Lebron James's remaining years. Objective number two same
thing with Anthony Davis, so that he's ready to become
the face of the franchise when Lebron retires. Objective number

(21:53):
three is to have a coaching staff that can help
develop the young players and also prove you know their
whole you know, roster from top to bottom, so they
have roster depth and know, yeah, they want to still
be in contingent for an NBA championship. Like something's got
to give here, and the Lakers, I think internally will

(22:14):
concede this isn't a dream job. But I think inevitably
it just seems like the rains on the wall that
JJ Reddick could ultimately become a head coach, a good
head coach. But because there's so many potential landmines that's
under the microscope that follows Lebron James and the Lakers,
I can't help but think this is a setup for failure.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
Not to mention that there is a very large contingent
of the media that is rooting for it to fail.

Speaker 5 (22:43):
And look, not to mention that there's going to be
two candidates with me and you that are going to
be underminding because we want the head coach and position.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
Everybody wants that job. Let me ask you this. You know,
I brought it up last day.

Speaker 1 (22:57):
I'm put it out on Twitter. Mark there, Mark Medeina says,
I will undermine JJ rehtt the Laker.

Speaker 4 (23:05):
Wasn't that the thing when Jason Kidd was an assistant coach.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
That everybody was looking on like they did, look over.

Speaker 4 (23:10):
Your shoulder because he's coming after you.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (23:12):
Look that wound up not being the case because Frank
Vogel helped the Lakers win a championship. Of course he's
had a good year. And then you know, Jason Kidd
was being offered a pretty attractive job with the Mavericks,
so you take it. But look, I think the writing
on that wall is inevitable, even though they wound up
having a good partnership and both are great coaches. If

(23:35):
Frank Vogel didn't succeed eventually, Jason Kidd would have taken
this place.

Speaker 4 (23:39):
Yeah, he was going to do that.

Speaker 3 (23:40):
But the thing coming out of it, Mark was the
report saying that Genie Buss was quote genuinely disappointed.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
Who's the rat?

Speaker 1 (23:52):
I don't need Mark madeIn now we know he's he's
undermined either of mind knowing.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
You know, now, come on, we know im in a'sent.
These charges are erroneous. I will say this. I know
that there's been a lot of fun speculation, you know,
during this whole coaching search on was this just you know,
a ploy for Dan earlier to get a raise, and
were the Lakers just throwing us out there to make

(24:17):
it look like it was a real coaching search. They
wouldn't fly a candidate out just to go through the
motions to win like the Twitter game. Right. The interests
in Dan Hurley was real. They made a real pitch.
I think before the meeting ended they had optimism that
this would be a good pitch and they could convince

(24:39):
Dan Hurley to take the job. So, yeah, the disappointment
was genuine. They felt like they gave them a good
contract offer. They sold everything that's good about the Lakers.
They also talked pragmatically both sides about you know, the
challenges that they inherit with this roster and moving forward.
But you know, they never got a sense that when

(25:01):
they were having these conversations with Dan Hurley that there
was any undertone of hey, you guys have a lot
of red flags and how do you address them. It
was more about just having a frank basketball discussion about
the good things about the roster and the challenging things.
And so they concluded, you know what, we got rejected
more because he's got a good thing of Yukon than

(25:23):
any of our issues. But that's not the camouflage so
that they don't have issues, because there's a lot of them.

Speaker 1 (25:29):
NBA insider Mark Medine our guest to Jason Smiths with
Mike Carmen live from the tyreq dot com Studios. I
guess you have to call it the undermining, Mark Medina,
He's the underminer like the Incredibles, Razbergy.

Speaker 5 (25:44):
Call me the Anthony Davis whisper when he doesn't feel
like he's getting enough touchoes.

Speaker 1 (25:48):
Or well, listen, are using the Jontay Murray whisper because
we saw earlier today the Lakers could potentially circle back
to obtain him. Now the trade season is starting to
have been a boy if they can make if they
can make that happen, because look, if the Hawks are
really bent on starting over again, and just like the
Bulls seem like they are, boy, I would go hard

(26:09):
and heavy at Murray and just make it happen.

Speaker 5 (26:13):
Yeah, that's the thing. I don't think that the Hawks
will want to make Murray available. I think they'll want
to make Trey unavailable, and that's a good option to
have too. I think the Lakers should be interested, but
I think the challenging thing here is this, the Lakers
have three draft picks, so they have more assets to
offer starting NBA Draft Night, but they have the same
supporting cast and roster that they did last season, and

(26:36):
I don't think that's really enough to really move the needle.
And I think ironically the Lakers have been at the
conclusion that they're always try to big game hump. They're
the Lakers. They're open to having a third star, but
I think that they will still always value roster depth
over that with Lebron James and Anthony Davis. And so

(26:58):
that's not to say that their Beholrelden to this specific
roster because they lost in the first round. But I
don't think that they're going to be comfortable with parting
with those draft picks and stripping down the roster where
they have someone like Trey Jung or even de Jante
Murray and then it's about filling the rest of the
roster with fat minimum guys. So that's the challenge that

(27:20):
they have. It's going to be a little bit easier
because they have draft picks finally to use, but it
could still set them themselves up with that same predicament.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
Now you mentioned the Anthony Davis touches and such before
Mark earlier in the process it seemed like he was
enamored a bit with Brego, so you know, smoothing that out.
But in terms of roster management, I mean, he's truly
your one big asset in all this. If they don't gel,
is that something that we see become an issue as

(27:50):
this season goes on.

Speaker 5 (27:51):
Well, and think about this as me that someone's trying
to undermind JJ Rolph the pat He didn't give Anthony
Davis that Defensive Player of the Year vote, so you
know he's already lacking confidence in his abilities as a
rim protector. No. Look, I think in all seriousness here,
even though we talk about JJ Reddick in the podcast

(28:12):
with Lebron, I think that all parties involved want to
make it so that Anthony Davis is the guy because
Lebron James will look a lot better having a less
is more approach at this stage of his career than
him having to be the lead guy. And that's not
to say that Lebron doesn't want to have his influence
in the locker room or have the you know, autonomy

(28:36):
to still run the offenses he sees fit. But I
think from a workload standpoint, he wants it so that
he doesn't have to play as many minutes long, as
much time, you know, as far as his role, and
the only reason that he pushed back I think last
season in prior seasons is he didn't feel like the

(28:56):
rest of the roster was ready to carry that baton.
But with how much better we saw Anthony Davis last season,
both with his health and production, I think now is
the time to do that.

Speaker 1 (29:07):
Now, looking ahead and seeing how things are going to fall,
Bronnie James is going to be a big conversation between
now and the draft where he goes what winds up happening.
You haven't been on sports Keta about it that you
put up in the last twenty four hours. How is
this going to happen? And there's so much secrecy, so
much cloak and dagger stuff with Bronnie James and his
draft position and who he's working out for, who he's not.

(29:29):
How do you see this going?

Speaker 5 (29:31):
It's really funny. The reference I did with sports Keto
where I talked a few NBA executives around the league
that are familiar with the draft prospects. They strongly shot
down the idea that the Lakers would be trading up
just to get Brownie, that they're doing it just to
play Kate Lebron, and that any other team is having

(29:55):
this grand scheme about signing Brawny with the hopes Lebron
would go with them, because they just didn't see Lebron
moving taking a significant discount. I think for the Lakers,
even though you know they want to keep Lebron happy,
they're not going to move heaven and Earth to do that,
and so they think that he's going to be available

(30:17):
at fifty five. I think, in fairness to Brouni, there
were people I talked to that see a lot of
positive things. His mental resiliency with over coming to cardiac arrest.
He's a team guy. You know, the fact that Lebron
James is his dad. He has good influence as far
as basketball IQ. I think the question marks is he

(30:38):
doesn't have a definitive skill set, and I think because
of that, the feeling is he's a late second round pick,
or he's going to be signed to a g leae
contract and look, Lakers have fifty fifth pick, so that's
probably what's going to happen. But I think it's ironic
in light of Rich Paul and you know, he's done
wonders for his clients, does a good job for what
he does. But the comments that he made are yer

(31:00):
this week about you know, kind of warning teams that
Lebron's not going to take the minimum, like it seemed
unnecessary because at least the people I talked to they
didn't think teams were scheming to do that to begin with.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
You can fall him on Twitter at Mark g Underscore
Medina that said, Mark g Underscore Medina the underminer who
will be undermining JJ Redick from day one of the
Reddick era in l A. Mark, thanks a bunch, you
want TV in LA this weekend.

Speaker 5 (31:28):
I am the CBS l A with Jim Hill Saturday afternoon.
And look, if any accusations get back to me that
I'm undermining JJ Reddick, the truth is is that Jason
Smith as the others.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Yeah, I mean, here's the problem is there's audio recordings
of everything.

Speaker 4 (31:48):
That just transpired.

Speaker 1 (31:51):
Thanks, of course we're going to edit it to make
you look really out to get him like there's not
there's extra.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Stort the voice a little bit. Yeah, let's go one
hundred percent. Have fun this weekend. Buddy, we'll talk to
you next.

Speaker 5 (32:06):
I was gonna say, I'm sure a podcast recording of
this show will be a source of conversation and JJ
Reddick's next podcast.

Speaker 4 (32:14):
Let's go ah.

Speaker 3 (32:16):
As long as we get writer credit, that's all we're
looking for from these places.

Speaker 1 (32:20):
I'd see it. Man, enjoy the weekend.

Speaker 5 (32:22):
I appreciate you, guys.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
I will undermine, we will underfind major.

Speaker 4 (32:29):
I will undermine the hell out of all of this.

Speaker 1 (32:32):
Oh, that's the best, Hey, speaking of the best special delivery.
Steve de Seger, I'm sure is going to lead off
by telling you about a four hundred and fifty five
foot home run that was just hitting Major League Baseball
to the deepest part of center field in a very
specific stadium by a very specific player against his very

(32:52):
specific former team.

Speaker 7 (32:54):
Steve O take it away show, Hey, Otani and the
Dodgers up to nothing on the Angels top of the six.
That long home run run, Well, he's gonna set the
record for most Dodger homers going over four hundred and
fifty feet in the season. It's only half way through
the season and this is his fifth homer in six games.
By the way, Otani with twenty two this year that
leads the National League. And earlier baseball, we saw Atlanta

(33:17):
pound the Yankees eight to one Chris sail to win.
He's ten and two for the Braves. By the way,
you guys were talking hoops. I mentioned this on the
earlier show. Did you see there is a recruit for
the Florida Gators for the coming season?

Speaker 4 (33:29):
Seven nine maybe seven foot nine.

Speaker 1 (33:32):
Yeah, he was like six three when he was twelve
or something like that. So there's home James.

Speaker 7 (33:39):
Yeah, eight years old, he was six to one. Yeah,
eight three star recruit. Now his dad is six '
eight mom six foot two.

Speaker 1 (33:48):
Now he's the pictures of him playing in high school
where he's just standing under the rim, basically just handing
the ball up, and there's everybody else's looks like they're
like four feet tall. Like they had the hamburglar trying
to jump on top of him, saying, how did they
ever lose a game? He should be od this team
ever lose a game?

Speaker 7 (34:05):
Go to the Globetrotters.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
Now I go to the paint, I turn around, You
pass me the ball. I turn around and I lay
the ball in and no one can stop me.

Speaker 7 (34:13):
Even if he only gets a couple of minutes, I
assume this will be the tallest college basketball player ever.
He is a preferred walk on, so not quite athletics scholarship.
So we still have a hockey season going on, gentlemen.
Florida was up three games to none, lost again tonight
five one at Edmonton, giving up a couple of empty
netters in the five minutes. The last few minutes, I
should say. So, we're gonna have a Game seven of

(34:36):
the series at Florida on Monday. It's been pointed out
online and I remember the tweet. It was about a
week ago. We were about to have an American team
wrap up the Cup, and here Florida has never won
the Cup in its franchise history. A Canadian team has
not won the Cup since nineteen ninety three. Donald Trump
tweeted a week ago, Wow, the Florida Panthers are a

(34:56):
fantastic ice hockey team. They're three to zero against Yeah,
well since then, they haven't even led a game. He's
the reverse Grimace? Can we say that?

Speaker 4 (35:05):
Nicely done?

Speaker 1 (35:07):
So?

Speaker 4 (35:07):
If he's not purple, what coloration are we giving him?

Speaker 7 (35:10):
Yeah? Well some have said orange. The Edmonton Oilers fired
their head coach early this season. Let's not forget with
a record of three to ten at the time, they're
not only in the final, they're one game away from
winging and winging it all. They they're one of the
rare teams to even get on the list of Hey,
they were down three to zero in the series and
they've at least forced a game seven, first team to

(35:31):
do so in the Stanley Cup Finals since nineteen forty five. Famously,
the nineteen forty two Toronto Maple Leafs were down three
to zero and wound up winning that series. And to
win as they did tonight, this is the first time
in Connor McDavid's great career with Edmonton that the Oilers
won the game where he played, but he not only
didn't have a point, he didn't have a shot. That

(35:53):
it only happened seven times, mostly in his rookie year.
They had lost every time until tonight. By the way,
the TV viewing of the previous game on Tuesday, over
four million viewers for the previous Cup final game. The
full Stanley Cup postseason on the ESPN networks is averaging
one point six million viewers. The Argentina game got over

(36:13):
a million on cable last night with FS one, and
also the Portugal game from the Euros this week one
point two million for a day game on Fox. Men's
College World Series is averaging one point two million so far,
and last night's tribute to the Negro Leagues the game
Giants Cardinals on Fox TV from Birmingham two point three

(36:35):
to five million viewers. Well, the Yankees had seventy six
straight starts where their starting pitcher went at least four innings. Now,
back to back days, the starter hasn't gotten past the
fourth and those starters have allowed fifteen runs. Solo and
Carlos Rodin took the l against the Braves eight to one. Meanwhile,
the Mets were.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
White Sox ex White Sox Night. It can't win at all,
it doesn't matter.

Speaker 7 (36:58):
Chicago White Sox. This was reference briefly early in the show.
Their game ended on a double play, losing two one
at Detroit. It was a liner to center and the
runner at first for Chicago just forgot how many outs
they were end of game. The Mets won at Chicago
today over the Cubs eleven to one, beating show to Imanaga,
a pitcher who was seven and one with an era
of one point eight.

Speaker 1 (37:20):
The power of Grimace raised man. He jumped up the
whole run. And not that it's a big deal, not
that you know, say something that's not potentially serious, but
the Mets all said, hey, his fastball wasn't what it
was the last time we played them, and the sure enough,
his fastball was down like two miles an hour. And
I think the Cubs are going to look into that

(37:41):
because you know, tired arm something else. But when your
fastball is lost, you lose a couple of miles off
your fastball and proud of them.

Speaker 7 (37:47):
A week with Yamamoto is last Dodger start.

Speaker 1 (37:49):
Yeah, that's a big deal. Nor thank you, Steve. I'm appreciated,
my friend. Thanks. The Jason Smith Show is my best friend.
Mike Carmon live from the tiraq dot Com studios come

Speaker 1 (38:19):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon
Yo live from the tirack dot Com studios where uh,
well show heo Tani just went deep four hundred and
fifty five feet.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
First game against the Angels in Dodger Stadium. Okay, the
Dodger a two nothing lead. Uh Dodger relieve it. Ryan
Yarborough hit three batters in the top of the sixth inning.
Angels now tie the game up with the Dodgers at
two a piece going to the bottom of the six
Now that sounds crazy.

Speaker 4 (38:50):
Kind of dig that though. Yeah, guy at three.

Speaker 1 (38:52):
Guys in the inning all on breaking pitches right like,
It's not like he was. I think he had all
three guys on breaking pitches.

Speaker 4 (38:58):
It means they're doing a big job of getting out
of the way.

Speaker 1 (39:03):
Yeah. Oh well, no, no, no, no. One of the
hit batsmen really tried to do all he could. He
still got hit. Like he hit the deck and moved out.
It's like, dude, you gotta just turn and get hit man.
Come on, Look, that's that's what I always teach the
girls of softball. Listen, I understand, I understand your instinct
is to get out of the way. But when the
ball is coming at you, and it's not something coming
at your head, you just kind of turn and you

(39:25):
know what, because you know why we need you to do.
And I snap my fingers and they go, we need
you to get on base. I said, exactly, take one
for your team. Minute, just he just got a turn.
If it's coming at your head or something, I get it.
But when it's coming, you see, you just got to
turn and let it hit you, because why, hey, we
get on base.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
That pain is temporary and glorious forever.

Speaker 1 (39:44):
Now, that would be a crazy embarrassing story if that
was the most embarrassing story in baseball to actually, you know,
guy hits three batters in any that's a big deal. However,
the answer to that is no. And much like you
see on a late night TV show when when the
host and has somebody come on as an actor who's
got a movie coming out, and he says, hey, you
brought a clip from your new movie Forrest. Set it

(40:05):
up for us, and the actor says, well, you know,
my character is a serial killer, and this is where
my character decides he's not only going to kill this person,
but eat them after.

Speaker 4 (40:15):
I will say that slated quickly.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
But Mike Harmon, Why don't you set up this next
clip we have for us here as the craziest, weirdest,
most embarrassing story in baseball tonight.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
Now the White Sox are down to one and we
go to the top of the ninth Foley in from
Detroit and Rookie Colas strikes out swinging to start the inning.
And then you have a hit by pitch. So we
got a runner on tying runner is a board.

Speaker 1 (40:43):
One on one out right, one.

Speaker 4 (40:44):
On one out, And then we.

Speaker 8 (40:46):
Got this set up there again Ben and Tendy gives
it a ride for center field. Matt Fierling makes the catch.
They thought, well they thought there were two out. It's
gonna be a double play. Oh my goodness, what away
there in the game. Bakers win and the White Sox
have yet another play that typifies their season.

Speaker 4 (41:06):
Two to one. Tigers, thank you very much. I mean
I can't. I was like, wait a minute, I thought
there's a there's one out.

Speaker 1 (41:15):
How is the world does this happen?

Speaker 3 (41:20):
Here?

Speaker 8 (41:20):
You go.

Speaker 3 (41:22):
The White Sox broadcast squad Gordon Beckham in there instead
of just Steve Stone, So you get.

Speaker 1 (41:28):
That, you know, And here's the thing is is I
get on certain levels when you don't know how many
outs there are, you need to be reminded sometimes, but
in Major League Baseball, but specifically in the ninth inning,
when you're on you know, okay, you got it, Okay,
there's wound. You gotta know that. Man, you can't get
doubled off first base. That'd be the final out of

(41:52):
the game. Really, I feel like, I mean, you got
to go a look at this is Monty Williams coaching
the White Sox. I mean, has he gone right from
the Pistons the White Sox. Hey, you got fired for
now I'm coaching the White Sox. Like what's happening?

Speaker 3 (42:04):
But it's it's not like you were gonna score like
you know, second third, You get caught up because you're
desperate trying to fight making the final out that way.
Uh and it really and it's a veteran player at
that and so it's not like a kid, not not
a rookie DeJong.

Speaker 4 (42:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (42:26):
Quote mental laps in ninth proves costly for Socks. That
is the the headline at MLB dot com. I mean
that he's an eight, your veteran, he's eight, your guy.

Speaker 1 (42:37):
I mean, that's just that's just incredible. It's just it's
it's incredible that not that if it happened during the game. Okay,
I understand, and because we've seen stuff like this in
the fourth or fifth inning, the whole the whole team
thinks there's two outs and after a ground out they
all come off the field. But this is the ninth inning.
This is it's awesome, the ninth inning. Man. It's also
a thing you get.

Speaker 3 (42:56):
Doubled up on on what you think is is a
ball that's gonna drop in the hole, right, you know
that outfield, there's no way he's gonna get there, and
then they make a great running catch, diving catch, whatever,
and you've crossed the rubicon because you're you're running. Uh yeah,
we've seen that. But just forgetting on a routine fly ball.

Speaker 1 (43:17):
How many outs are in an inning and it's not
like it's not like it's been an inning where crazy
things have happened, Like we had a bunch of walks
and a stolen base and there was a fight at
us and then we got hit by the pitch. Yeah,
I mean that's you had you had an out and
you had a guy on base, right, you were the
guy on bak you saw the guy in front of
you strike out, you got hit. That's all that's happened

(43:37):
so far. That's all that You weren't a pinch runner
going into the game and you forgot No, you got hit,
and you went to first base one guy hit before you.
I mean, this is just buddy, I don't know, Man,
you may need to disband. Dude. I get it with.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
That eighty seven on base percentage. He's not used to
those situational fits. But I mean, I don't know. I
don't think the White Sox can finish the season.
