Let's give this part.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome in Side hour three The Jason Smith Show

(00:51):
you and I one more night. Then I'm on vacation,
going to London. Congrats, And I gotta say, you know,
we're doing it like this Harry Potter vacation, like we're
seeing Curse Child.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
We're going to Scotland. Everything right, we did great.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
But I think what I'm most excited about is I'm
going man the MLB London series. Mets gear is gonna
be so cheap, like it's gonna be I mean, because
now it's over, right, it's been over for a month.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
I'm like, I'm gonna get that.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Yeah, they're gonna have that in all kinds of prominent
spots going Hey, Mets Philly. There's gonna be jackets and
hoodies and pants, and I'm gonna buy them all. It's
gonna be how much is that two pounds? Okay, I
have two pounds, right, I mean, I mean, I guess,
I guess that's not a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Sure.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
The stuff I'm gonna get, I can't. There's one item
that I will buy for you. What are you gonna
buy for me? Mets Philly's jacket? Okay, that's the one
thing I won't buy. That was the yes on the
same jacket.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Yeah, that was the worst, Like, who's gonna buy that?
Speaker 4 (01:49):
By the way, as you talk about what you're gonna spend,
that'll be probably the first time he's gonna lose two
pounds in quite some tile. But I ain't.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
Yeah, the most exciting part about your trip is like
finding Big Max with Royal Royal Mac with cheese.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
What do they call it Royal with cheese. It's the
Royal Royal with cheese.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
No, they had the English system. It's France, France, it
has the metrics.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
That's okay, Steve. That's the last time I ever buy
food for you at night. That's your last piece of pizza.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Hope you enjoyed.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
That the first. England tried to play its way out
of the Euros. But they'll still be in the Euros
with a quarterfinal on Saturday, and you'll be there.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
I don't believe that in the Euros anybody has scored
a goal yet. I think every every game nothing nothing
is nothing, is nothing ned zip today, no one scoring, No.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
One's scoring at all. Every game is nothing zero zero.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
England was almost done in their last game, and England scored.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
One goal and they moved on, right. I think England
scored once in three games.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
They got a.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Goal at the last minute of regulation and a goal
at the opening minute of extra time.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
It was two one.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
Know what the difference is between our team and their team?
What's that their star scored?
Speaker 6 (02:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, yeah, and you're there. Polistic did not play well.
He did not play well.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
He did not and his set pieces were awful and
I can't believe they kept allowing him to take them
because they were not going anywhere. But you know again,
what made a lot of what made the round today
was the Greg Berhalter statement from last night where or
from early this morning where he said, Hey, yeah, of
course I told the team to score the game with
Panama and Bolivia. I want them to know the situation
(03:25):
it's like, and what you're gonna tell him not to
be aggressive or we're changing our strategy.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Now if Panama went scores a goal like timing.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
Oh man, do you realize you were telling the players
on the field.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
One one, one one now in the other game while.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
They're setting up to defend a free kick and immediately
free kick happens, goal alowed.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Like they would defend the free kick different. Hey, I
want to make sure you know it's one one coaching,
we really feel this. We really have to stop the
free kick, Like you're not going to change your strategy
until the game is over and you know what happened.
But the game is won one it could go anyway.
A want people know what's one one. The game could
change in two minutes, and you need to tell people
the other team tell you guys, Hey, I know I
(04:05):
told you to stay back, but now be aggressive and
go foe. Now be aggressive and do this because Panama
scored a goal Like that's just stupid.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
So it's just stupid.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
US Soccer says they're going to evaluate and that this
wasn't a good tournament at the US fell short. Good, okay, fine,
all all good. This can't be the coach when the
US is co hosting the World Cup in two years.
The Americans were not just eliminated last night. In their
last five games over the last month, they have five
goals scored. And the US was one of the six
(04:33):
guest teams in this tournament, which is normally the South
American Confederation's championship. I mean, it's the US soil that
is hosting all these tournament games. Brazil was playing at
the forty nine Ers Stadium tonight. It's not in South
America this time around, and all the games are on Fox.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
And FS one, and we're out already.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
And Mexico was at least as weak as the United
States in this tourney.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
And you could tell me we're not a soccer not
a soccer country. But just how many people are foam
at the mouth to get rid of Greg Burholder, Like
that's the number one topic.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
In all of sports. We need a new coach, we need.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yes, we are absolutely stating, And did you notice the graphics.
We're talking about his win loss record, which is a
really good one if you go back five years, Oh,
how many games does that include against Guatemala, A L.
Salvador and Trinidad and Jamaica. None of the teams you
would be playing in this tournament, none of the teams
that you're talking about in the top twenty of FIFA's
(05:27):
world rankings. When they played one of those teams in
a two not batch last month, the US lost five
to one to Columbia. They would have been facing Columbia
this weekend if they have somewhow, somehow advanced out a
group and it might have been a repeat.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
That's like saying, you know, the Lakers record the last
five years looks pretty good if you go all the
way back to when they won the title in the Bubble.
What if you don't count well, if you don't count that,
it's really.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah, then Lebron really hasn't had too many good seasons
actually as a Laker. No US men's soccer since October
record of five six and one. That's what we're talking about.
Not one game, not one turn ornament. No, this isn't good.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
No, we will see and look and and Burholters apparently
is like, let me see what I get away with. Yeah,
of course I told the guys the score of the game.
Oh that's great, good stuff. And wait, wait to keep
your job. As far as the Lakers go, we'll have
more on them coming up in about fifteen million.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
We're talking soccer. Did you see the one item that
the Angel City team and the Women's League LA's women's
team is up for sale and apparently will Obey is
going to.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Be buying it. The former will Obey NBA host, it's
going to be buying. Will Obey is going to buy
Angel CITYFC.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
She was host of Inside Stuff, remember, Yeah, you know who.
She's married to the Disney chair and so she's got
a coin or two. And they valued the Angel City
FC franchise at two hundred and fifty million dollars if
it goes through.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Really, will Obey is gonna will Obey doesn't have that money.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Come on, well said to a fifty million.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
She and her husband could be the owners. Oh, Angel
City FC, because well, it's her money too, right, this
is the state of California.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
It's absolutely her money.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
You know.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
It's been Natalie Portman and Jessica Chastain and Serena Williams
and you know, and her husband and all these people
that have bought it, bought pieces of the Angel City team,
and apparently that ownership group is selling.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Wow. Do you think do you think she'll buy it?
Speaker 1 (07:16):
With Ahmad Rashot Because I mean they were they were
about Inside Stuff.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
That was the two of them.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
What about Summer Sanders coming in there as a replacement
Julie Moran reporting live from Angel City.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Oh boy, that would be fat. Everybody from the was
on TV in the nineties.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
Every Saturday NBA Inside Stuff. For those who don't remember,
it's like when we talk about this Week in Baseball.
There used to not get highlights quite so regularly, and
there used to be a sports specific show on Saturdays.
Inside Stuff with will Obay partly as co host was
one of those, just like Baseball had Mel Allen and
(07:57):
twib As, it was known This Week in Baseball.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Kristin Ledlow would be there, Grant Hills, They're all buying
the team together. And they're gonna call it Angel City
inside stuff. That'd be the team. But we'll have more again.
We'll have more on the Lakers coming up in a
few minutes. You mentioned a couple seconds ago, but I
promised a bit on Caitlin Clark and the Fever. Tonight
marquee Game of the Night in Sports on ESPN, the
(08:21):
Fever go into Vegas and lose eighty eight sixty nine.
The Fever get dropped a big night for Kelsey Plumb.
She scores thirty four, biggest crowd. I think that the
Aces have had a year along all because Caitlin Clark.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Right, there's a lot of stars in the.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
WNBA, the new group, but Caitlin Clark is still the one.
But let me just let me just say this because
I don't know what it is. I don't know if
this is maybe she's hitting the wall a little bit
and she's tired, maybe she's caught up in Hey, I'm
a real distributor now, but Caitlyn Clark needs to be
more aggressive. This is not the player that we watched
(08:58):
at Iowa. She had twelve shots tonight.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
She kept missing threes and stop shooting third most.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Shots on the team. She can't have a night where
she has the third most shots on a team. She's
gotta be taking twenty shots a game. And while her
numbers tonight hey thirteen points, eleven assists, six rebounds, she's
tallying ten or more assists in every game. She's become
a terrific passer. She would have more assists if some
of her passes were converted into into buckets. But there's
(09:25):
a lot of bunnies that get missed. So it's not
that she's not playing well, but I'm watching her and
I'm saying something is up with her, either her confidence
or she's caught up in distributing, because there's plays where
she needs to take shots and she's not. There's a
couple of times where she had a chance driving to
the hoop where she's gonna go in and get a bucket,
and instead she's looking to dish when she gets into
(09:47):
the key, and I'm like, just go up and take
that shot.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
That's you.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
You're the leading scorer in college basketball history. Take a shot.
And that tells me, Okay, she's looking to pass a
little bit too much. And then I'll see possessions where
she will bring the ball up court, and then she
will pass in to start the offensive play and then
stand ten feet behind the three point line and just
watch it unfold like that happens. I get every couple possessions.
(10:12):
If you're tired, you need a rest. Okay, we're gonna
set the ball in here, Leah Buston's got it. We're
gonna do something else. We're setting up somebody for an
ISO play. I understand, But there's a lot of times
where I watch and she just she passes the ball
in and whatever offensive play is unfolding, and she's ten
feet behind the three point line, just standing there waiting
for the ball to come the other way. She can
play defense, and you can't have that. I mean, I mean,
(10:34):
you just can't. A couple of times, I get it,
but it's become way too common. And that's what I
don't know. If she's tired, I don't know. If she's
not a gress I don't show what it is. But
she needs to be involved in the offense more, and
and she's playing a lot of minutes, sometimes only come
outs for a couple minutes a game. But if she
needs that rest to be a better shooter and be
more of a score first player. She's got to do
(10:55):
that because right now, this is not her game and
watching her just back off of and not even get
involved in the off this is where the teams like
the Aces go, oh, Caitlyn's gonna pass it and kind
of stand out there. Yeah, great, we're gonna stop them
because you know, the Fever aren't very good when that's
why that's why haven't made the playoffs in seven years.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
That's why they got her in the drafty they were.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
The worst team last year. We're okay with defending them
four on four if Caitlyn Clark is gonna be way
out near mid court, right so that's something that has
to change. She has to get more aggressive. She's got
to look for her shots, and she can't just be uninvolved.
You can blame Christie Sides all you want, and there
is a really tough piece of video tonight of Christie
Side's coaching. While Lisa Blueter is sitting behind her watching
(11:37):
the game out she's wearing eyeohs, she's wearing Iowa, your
Iowa T shirt and this she retired. Lisa Bluter, who
coached Iowa for twenty five years, coach Caitlyn Clark to
the championship game the last two years, Lisa Blueter watching
the game, uh, and watching her, you know, And she's
watching the game, and then in front of her, Christie
Size is coaching, And I'm like, oh, that looks like foreshadowing.
(11:57):
That just looks like for it, Like, how long until
Christy Sides is no longer the coaching Ay, Lisa Bluter's
coming in and bringing the Caitlyn Clark offense with her.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
That's coming in right now.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
That's like John Calipari showing up behind somebody's bench. Oh
but Kayln Clark, she should be tired at this point,
going directly from yet another college season to the WNBA
Draft and this is a summer sport in this country,
and then on to this team. I wonder if we're
getting to the point where it's kind of like when
(12:27):
David Beckham signed with the LA Galaxy and came over
to Major League Soccer, it didn't matter if he got hurt.
They had sold so many tickets in so many cities
in advance. He kind of had to play at that
at this point. Kaitlin Clark tonight from three point range
was one of seven for Indiana in the loss. She
had thirteen points, eleven assists, six turnovers. But it was
(12:48):
a sold out crowd in Vegas. It's not just the
new single game attendance record for Vegas, and that's a
team that's won WNBA championships. It's twenty thousand and three
sixty six the most attended sporting event in that arena's history.
Temobile Arena, which has not just had PAC twelve tournament
for years, but the boxing and et cetera, twenty thousand
(13:11):
and three sixty six the most attended sporting event in
the history of the building.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Shoot the ball, shoot more. I don't care if you're tired,
get involved in the offensive play, rest a couple of
minutes a game, Shoot the ball, Exit out about a fresca.
Jason Smith, Steve Desager in for Mike Harmon tonight. We'll
have more in the WNBA coming up in a bit,
as the All Star teams were announced, but coming up next,
(13:36):
Bronnie James had his introductory press conference today.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
We'll talk to a guy who covered it who was there.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
How crazy are things gonna get with the Lakers and
Bronny this season? That's coming up next right here. Jason Smith,
Steve Disaga, Fox Sports Radio. Oh, by the way, I'd
be remiss if I didn't tell you. Shoeo Tani has
just smacked a two run homer to give the Dodgers
a four three lead over the Diamondbacks. So much for
being concerned about him fouling the ball off his foot
(14:05):
earlier in the game and going into the locker room
to get it. Looked at one hundred and twelve mile
an hour exit, Vell blasts Dodgers lead it now for
to three over the Diamondbacks. This is Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Or to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show
with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 8 (14:31):
Hey, it's Ben, host of The Fifth Hour with Ben Maller.
Would mean a lot to have you join us on
our weekly auditory journey. You're asking, what in God's name
is the Fifth Hour. I'll tell you it's a spin
off of it, Ben Mather Show. A Colt hit overnights
on FSR. Why should you listen? Picture if you will?
Speaker 6 (14:47):
A world will.
Speaker 8 (14:48):
We chat with captains of industry in media, sports, and
more every week explore some amazing.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Facts about human nature and more.
Speaker 8 (14:55):
Listen to the Fifth Hour with Ben Maller or the
iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcast.
Speaker 7 (15:01):
Mets over five hundred hundred they are in the grims
or the OMGRA Fox Sports Radio, the Jason Smith Show
with special delivery Steve de Sager.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
In from Mike Harmon tonight.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
You know we've gone from seven Nation Army to OMG
and Candalita Iglesias big hit tonight for the Mets.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Did his OMG song the other night. I mean, this
is what it is now.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
Steve de Sager. He's a singer and a player. You know,
he's a say you know he did his song. It's
great the Mets. The Mets all have a big OMG sign.
They all hit at the end of games. Now they
play the song at the end of games when the
Mets hit a home run, and I think it's cool,
if only for one thing is they're kind of taking
the attention away from Grimace, who really should be held
more responsible for the Mets fun. The Mets are seven
(15:54):
seventy eight in the Grimace era. They're winning percentages seven
seventy eight. I get the OMGC. That's awesome. Grimace is
responsible for all.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Of this, the rest of the baseball world is just saying, OMG,
the Mets are over the five hundred mark. That's actually
true tonight after the ten inning one look out.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Look out, let's look up. More baseball on the way.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
But today was a big day in the NBA because
we saw the introductory press conference for Brownie James, who
met the media as a member of the Lakers for the
first time, got the contract that Rich paul Is, agent
of Clutch Sports, said he was going to get a
multi year deal to be on the Lakers roster. No
two way deal, no G League. Now he still will
(16:35):
probably play a little bit in the G League, but
he is one of the fifteen contracts on the Lakers roster.
G I don't see where this can go wrong. Joining
us now in the hot line Lakers Insider. Check him
out on Twitter at Mark g Underscore. Medina, longtime friend
of the show, covered the press conference today.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Mark, what's happening, man, how are you?
Speaker 6 (16:55):
I'm going well? Just as always.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Yeah, no, listen, I dig that people are picking up
on that on social media because every time you do
something I say, hey, don't forget. Mark Medina said he
will undermine JJ Redick at every turn.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
He said it on our show last week.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
He will undermine JJ Reddick, and I want people to
pick it up and think it's serious.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
You know, all we got to do is say some
inflammatory things, don't get aggregated, and people will think it's serious.
So I guess here we are off to the races.
Let's see what we can do.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Or just get Ai Mark Medina.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Like we had the Ai Rob Polinka from the other
day where bron told us to draft Bronnie. We didn't
want to do it, but we were told to do it.
So it took me a second ago. Yeah, I get
that's Ai Rob Polinka, but how true is that really?
How true is that?
Speaker 6 (17:44):
Hey? Look, I mean Bronnie James was very gracious and
polite and he was thanking Rob and JJ for you know,
giving me everything, and I gave a little verbal cue
to JJ, and then he stepped in later on the
press conference from his first answer and he said, Rob
and I did not give Browny anything. Brownie has earned this.
(18:07):
He's earned this through hard work, So credit me for
that line.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
Well, no, that's great because more I don't know, because
that was my favorite part because it was JJ Reddick
who was spitting out hot takes and coaching fourth grade basketball.
It was him saying that Bronny has earned it, like
JJ Reddick, who fell into its job without any coaching
experience to say no, no, Bronny who came off the
bench and scored four points and gave a usc He's
(18:34):
earned it.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Like that was the best. That was the best part
to me, because the.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
Entire Lakers seat, the entire organization is nepotism. Genie Bus
got the team from her dad. Polinka got the gig
because he's Kobe's agent, you know, lebron gets lebron gets
into draft. Is get like the entire organization is nepotism.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
Yeah, I mean, look, uh, there's a lot of letters
on pack with us, and there's no doubt that family
connections and relationships play part with the Lakers, you know,
I think in fairness, they've done a good job with
those connections the championships. But I do get your point
about the current state of affairs. I mean, the craziest
(19:13):
part is, you know, we're asking Rob Polink about you know,
are you are you making an he moves and all
this stuff, and he starts talking about the second apriln again.
And meanwhile, other teams are doing things left and right
here and they have a full roster on their team,
and it very well could be the chance that this
is the roster entering the season. I mean, he entertained
(19:35):
the possibility that you know, those draft picks that he
had at Dangling Trades it might be being saved for
February before the trade deadline.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
About the roster for the Lakers, Mark is Brownie James
one of the fifteen on the roster. Can you explain
the contract and not two way and not a G
League contract?
Speaker 2 (19:54):
What is it?
Speaker 6 (19:55):
Yeah, he's one of the players that's on the roster.
It's not a two way. Now. I don't think he's
going to get significant minutes. I think most of the
time it'll be about you know, JJ Rex talked about
like this player development program that's you know, more toward
everyone that's catered to the young players as far as
like helping with skill work and weight room, training, habits, nutrition,
(20:19):
all that stuff. I think he's going to be more
of you know, what they call the State Ruddy group.
But yeah, he's one of the fifteen players on the roster, so.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
He's going to get a lot of G League games.
Speaker 6 (20:31):
Well, that's the thing. He will get some G League games.
But when you're on a two way contract, you're able
to play more games in the G League, So he'll
be able to play some. Just there's a limit to it.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
But shouldn't he be playing a lot of games because
he's barely played college ball, much less NBA.
Speaker 6 (20:50):
No, that's a fair, fair question. And look, summer league starting,
he's going to be playing all the minutes he won
this weekend and the calf weren'ty Classic next week in Vegas.
I think the other thing is that you know, he's
going to get a lot of time in the preseason
and practices. I think that he's going to play regular
(21:12):
season games. It's just not going to be you know,
he's the sixth or ninth guy on the rotation, so
there's going to be some blowouts. There's also going to
be some blowout losses, and he'll get some mop up
DV there. But you know, these are all fair questions,
and I know that it's it's easy to easy to
you know, make fun of it, but as JJ Reddicks,
(21:33):
you know, esteemed assistant, I do have to defend here
a little bit that fifty fifth ticks historically don't do
a lot to begin with. So you know, obviously there's
a bigger connection because of all the attention and Lebron's influence.
But this is fairly normal for a fifty fifth fifth pick.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
Okay, now let me ask you. Can you defend this?
Speaker 1 (21:55):
At the press conference today, JJ Reddick also said he's
not going to coach some and he's going to be involved,
but he's not going to coach it. And I sit
back and go, you wonder why the Lakers don't win?
This is a guy with no reps that I think
coaching summer league would help him. It will at least
get his feet what a little before he gets in
the preseason, the exhibition going it.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
He could use this.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
But no, he's not gonna cut really, he's not going
to coach summer league team.
Speaker 6 (22:21):
No, I mean, I get it, you know, but I
would say that his time is better served with trying
to get synergy with Rob Polinka and see whatever moves
they can make. I think the bigger thing is getting
time with the actual players you know that are on
the team, because I think, you know, no doubt he's
(22:43):
going to be tested with how he manages games and
draws up plays. But I think the bigger thing that
Darvin Ham wasn't able to do with some of the
role players was just really put them in positions to succeed.
And I think that, you know, again, as JJ Reddicks
assistant that may or may not be undermine him. I
(23:03):
think that's one strength that he'll actually have. Now look
big picture, when we're talking at all this stuff, I
think that's only due for single digit increases and wins.
Like it's going to start and end with how good
the roster is and how healthy Lebron James Anthony Davis
can be. But I don't think him, you know, having
(23:26):
game reps in the summer league is going to be
that substantial of the difference. I think he'll know when
to call a challenge and when to call it time out.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
Without that, Let's talk about the actual first round draft
pick of the Lakers, because it was the SEC player
of the year on a Tennessee team that made a
run to a regional final. Connect four. That's what's going
to be on the back of the jersey's last name
and the uniform number four Dalton connect Is it fair
to say two questions One, is it fair to say
he fell to the Lakers, that people were expecting him
(23:54):
to go higher after such a good college season, And
also will he be a regular part rotation.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
I think he will be a regular part of the
Laker rotation. Look, the Lakers had them in their had
don't connect in their top ten. You might roll your
eyes and say, whoever team says that their draft pick
was ranked higher and that was their first choice. But
when you look at all the mock drafts, he was
in the top ten. And here's a little inside secret
how mock drafts are done. You know, with the media,
(24:23):
it's based on them those writers talking to different scouts
executives around the league, so it comes from an informed place.
So I think that was the feeling that he was
going to be top ten. Now I think since he
dropped out of the top ten, there's some thought that
maybe the fact that he wasn't a great defender will
be held against him. And look, that might be his weakness,
(24:45):
but it's low hanging fruit. But the Lakers have a
lot of positional needs. They weren't good at three point shooting.
Part of it was guys weren't making shots, but also
part of it was, you know, the coaching staff weren't
prioritizing three point attempts. And I think all those things
will go up, but they need players that could hitch
shots and at least don't connect canned connect four if
(25:08):
you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
And me insider Mark Madeena our guest the Jason Smith
Show is Steve Desager in for Mike Carmon.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
All right.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
We saw Michael Thompson Lakers analysts, do an interview today,
did a podcast or did a radio interview rather, and
he said, look, he tried to convince his son Clay
to come to the Lakers. He wanted him to come
play there, but in the end, Clay's thirty four years old.
The grown men made up his own mind. Lebron called
Klay Thompson to come play for the Lakers, and what
we saw was Klay Thompson signed with the Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Was he ever really in play for the Lakers?
Speaker 6 (25:40):
I think he was certainly in play. I mean, look,
this piece is actually going to go up tomorrow on SPORTSCAA.
But I connected with Michael Thompson later this evening and
he said that, like he put out all the stops,
Like he mentioned about the Showtime mirrors and you know,
his championships and how much are men and that's something
that Quaye was familiar with. Boy he brought up Kobe
(26:01):
Bryant and how much you know, Clay idolized them. He
broke down the fit of how he Lebron and Anthony
Davis would co exist. Well, he would get a lot
of open shots. And he even mentioned about all the
different ports in la where he could put his boat in,
and it still wasn't enough. I think the bottom line
is this. I think that you know, obviously contract mattered
(26:25):
as far as the dollar number. I think the fact
that there's a state income tax mattered. But I think
the bigger thing is, frankly, the Mavericks had more to
offer in a sign in trade that the Warriors wanted
than the Lakers stood. And so you know, that may
have still happened Klay Thompson going to Dallas because the
(26:45):
reality is they got the NBA Finals. The Warriors lost
in five games in the first round. But it also
didn't help that the Warriors didn't have anything on the
Lakers roster that they wanted. I mean, they like Austin Reeve,
I don't think you know, the Lakers were comfortable having
him as a centerpiece, but D'Angel Russell, he's the most
sizeable contract that they could get rid of. The Warriors
(27:08):
already went down that road a few years ago and
they said no things. I mean, ironically, they signed him
in the sign and trade when Kevin Durant left, and
part of the thinking was, well, we need him because
Klay Thomps is going to be out for the whole
season with his ACL injury, and while they didn't foresee
Steph Curry then getting hurt fourth game into the season,
they thought D'Angelo would do a better job with kind
(27:30):
of bridging that gap. And it's the same inclusion that
Laker fans have made about the Angelo can be a
great shooter, but he's a streaky shooter, great passer, but
it doesn't always make the right play at His defense
leaves a lot to be desired, so a lot of
variables in play. But I think the bottom line is
the contract number, and the fact that Dallas got to
the Finals helped till the still are the.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
Lakers still a great destination? I realized that question may
not even be worthwhile considering how acquisitions have changed with
the new CBA and the summer rules that all of that,
but Laker fans will always think this is the destination.
It seems to be less than that.
Speaker 6 (28:07):
Yeah, I mean, clearly they haven't been able to make
any moves, and I think that part of it is
the fact, yes, the second Apron is a real thing,
but when the Lakers are trying to do signing trades,
they don't have players the teams want, so it's hard.
It's hard for them to make a destination. If they
had more cat space to be a lot easier, but
(28:28):
they only have a mid level exception that's around twelve million.
You can only get so much with that. And I
think it's also revealing that I do believe Lebron James
when he got the messaging out there, that he'd be
willing to take a pay cut if it's for the
right player, and he's backed up. You know, for all
the criticism that he got when he announced, say he's
(28:48):
say against Dallas to South Beach, he took a relative
tay cut along with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh to
make that all work, And so I think that he
would have done that as just you know, there weren't
on the table that could have worked. And I really
think the only row remaining option that would fall under
the category of impact moves that Lebron would be willing
(29:09):
to take a pay cut. As to Mark Rosen, And
I'm a fan of Margo Rosen's game, Like, even though
he just shootsmittering sjumpers, he's efficient, great teammate. I think
that he can still you know, in short force space
even if he's not a three point shooter, and you know,
helps you as LA ties. But I don't even think
that's gonna work as far as them being able to
(29:30):
convince to Martigo to the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
So in the end, it's gonna be well, since you
couldn't sign anybody, I'll take the maximum for the next
couple of years. I was gonna get money, but now
that you can't sign anybody, you're gonna give me the money.
Speaker 6 (29:43):
I mean, if Lebron's gonna be on the Titanic, he
may as well enjoy a steak dinner. So that's that's
what's gonna be.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
He's on Twitter at Mark g Underscore, Madena, NBA Inside
to check him out, CBSLA, Spectrum Sports Net, Mark is
always buddy, appreciate your time, Enjoy enjoy the undermining.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
As that continues, we'll talk, Uh walk out, I might.
I think Phil.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
Jackson used to show up in shower shoes to coach
summer League.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
Oh yeah, it's it's kind of laid back. I'm good,
I know, I remember.
Speaker 4 (30:15):
I think it was Kurt Rambus who coached the summer League.
I don't think it was always a show.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
I mean, just think about this for the Lakers, is
that free agency basically is over, and they went over.
Now they need to be There's still a couple of
moves out there because there's still some players you mentioned
DeMar DeRozan, maybe Zach Lavine who would some play. Some
teams would like to find them new homes. But boy,
this suddenly has to get really, really creative because you
(30:41):
get shut out the first thirty six hours of free agency.
You're shut out of all the great players. Like you're done,
there's no more. Hey, we're gonna wait. I mean, it's over,
like it happens. It's a flash flood. It's here and
it's gone, and now the Lakers have to sit. You
just heard Mark say this could be the roster going
into the season, like if this is a roster Like again,
why I said JJ Reddick was hiring JJ Reddick was
(31:03):
irrelevant because the team is just going to be the
same as they were last year because they're not going
to be able to improve.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
I think the free agents is still available for them
include Ryan Tannehill, AJ McCarron, Matt Barkley might be available,
Zach Wilson, you get car Harmon's not here, I'll say sure, Simon, sure, Oh,
look at Harmon weighing in from London.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Thanks to Mark Medena for joining us as always time
not to find at what's trending in the wide world
of sports. Nothing bigger than a five run top of
the tenth inning. I wonder what team did that tonight.
Steve de Seger has that.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
More with what's trending, Well, we'll leave that to the
lesser news because we have NBA to start with. Of course,
they did have a press conference for the new coach
the Lakers recently, not as well attended as today. With
the two draft choices, I don't think people aware there
was a first rounder that was also in attendance, but
there was the second rounder, Brownie James, meeting the media
today and Dave mcmanhamon for one saying, according to his
(32:03):
ESPN sources, Dwayne Casey has withdrawn his name from consideration
for the Lakers' staff under Reddick, that he wrestled with
the decision did not want to uproot his family at
this time end quote. Donovan Mitchell got a three year
extension from the Cleveland Cavaliers worth one hundred and fifty
million dollars including a player option. Golden State acquired Kyle
Anderson from Minnesota in a sign and trade. He gets
(32:25):
three years twenty seven mil. Orlando resigned Moe Wagner two
years twenty two mil, and the Magic gave Jonathan Isaac
a new five year deal. The Pacers are signing center
James Wiseman. The NBA's new league year officially opens this Saturday.
The new salary cap is about one hundred and forty
million dollars per team. Guard Kemba Walker officially retired. He
(32:45):
played in Europe last season. Walker is the all time
leading scorer in Charlotte Hornet's history. The last Olympic qualifying
tournaments started today for men's hoops. They'll decide the last
four spots in Paris this month. Already eight teams like
the US have QUO qualified and host France as well.
Croatia today beat Slovenia one O eight ninety two despite
a triple double from Luka Donsich. Luca from three point
(33:09):
range was zero for nine for the winning Croatian side.
Dario Sarich a triple double and it eats a zubatch
of the Clippers eighteen points in eighteen minutes. Dominican Republic
won against Egypt. Bahamas with Michael Thompson as an assistant
coach defeated Finland ninety six eighty five for the Bahamas,
but he healed twenty four points in DeAndre eight and nineteen.
(33:29):
Spain ripped Lebanon. Brazil opened with a win against Montenegro
despite Nick Vucevic's seventeen points thirteen rebounds. Latvia beat Georgia
Italy over Bahrain easily. In that game, Danilo Gallinari for
the Italian's fourteen points in fifteen minutes. The US men's
Olympic team has an exhibition in Vegas on alf As
(33:49):
one against Canada on the tenth, so just over a
week away, and we've mentioned earlier.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Wait, now, how many points for Hido Turkulu. He played
in one of those games, didn't it.
Speaker 4 (33:57):
No, No, although you know he probably could. Okay, just
stick them in the corner, as long as you have
to run up and down. We mentioned Earliers show. The
US women's national team has its sendoff game July twentieth
in Phoenix against quote team WNBA. We'll call it this
Year's All Stars. It will include Caitlin Clark. Clark had
eleven assists six turnovers for Indiana in the loss at
(34:20):
Vegas tonight, eighty eight sixty nine Olympian Kelsey Plumb thirty
four points. New York beat Minnesota, New York seventeen and three.
As for the MLB late games at Dodgers Stadium, it's
Dodgers tied four to four with the Diamondbacks in the
top of the ninth and after rain delay in Kansas City,
they're only in the top of the eighth, but they
are playing the Rays now lead for to one over
(34:41):
the Royals. The Mets in ten innings won at Washington
seven to two. Cincinnati beat the Yankees five to four.
Aaron Judges thirty second home run by way for LA.
The Shohio Tani home run was his twenty seventh Tonight,
back to you and my goodness. Home run just allowed
by the Dodgers. Arizona takes the lead in the night.
Jack Peterson at Dodger Stadium has just hit it out
(35:04):
down the right field.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Line, and you get a pearl, and you get a pearl.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Do the Mets now have a better record than the Dodgers?
Speaker 4 (35:13):
It's forty two wins Dodgers fifty two.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
Okay, all right, hang the five hundred man. Okay, thank you.
Steve O.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
Coming up next. We've talked a lot about NBA free agency.
Gave you the deals we like the most so far.
What's the worst free agent deal we've seen? Oh, that's easy,
and it's next right here. Jason Smith. Steve de Sager
in for Harmon.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
This is Fox.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show. Steve de Sager in
for Mike Harmon. Probably he's finishing up his London vacation.
Next couple of days, I'll be starting money the We're
gonna pass each other in the plane and we're gonna
high five on the way.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
But he's gonna be back in time for July fourth.
To get outside and spoke to me. He will, he'll
be he'll be smoking me. I'll I'll be landing in
London on the fourth of July.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Hey, in a wave. Look out the window.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Hey, you guys, celebrate anything today, anything going on today,
anything going on, anything happening.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
Now for the Joly, you guys could share a big mac.
Speaker 6 (36:13):
It's light.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
I want you to wear the loudest red, white and
blue with stars walking off that plane with.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
My hand in the air like I'm Axelent. Jim Duggan, Hey,
number one, tough guy.
Speaker 6 (36:25):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Look, we spent some time talking about the big free
agent deals the last couple of days.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Lots of deals. We love, you know.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
I love that the Warriors let Clay go, and I
like the Klay Thompson landed with the Mavericks.
Speaker 4 (36:35):
There were two Warriors items tonight we just mentioned Buddy
here playing well for Bahamas. The Shams Sharania on the
Athletic This Hour saying that the Warriors are in serious
talks on a sign in trade to get Buddy Hugh.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
Yeah, they're trying to retool, which they need to do right.
They needed to let him go. The Mavericks needed him.
I like Chris Paul to the Spurs. I'm scared now
that Paul George is going to be a seventy six
er and now suddenly is the number three guy in
the team. Maybe that's what he needs to be. But
then on the other side of it, is this the
free agent move that I just can't get how James
(37:11):
Harden continues to get paid like this when he is
well past his prime.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Now Harden is still a good player.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
Yes it is, but he's not lifted any team to
any heights in the last few years.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
He is not the same guy.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
And still the Clippers extended him for two years and
seventy million, right at least thirty five million for next year,
and see what happens after this year. I don't understand
that they negotiated against themselves. Nobody else was getting in
the James Harden business of hey, we want to give
him thirty five million dollars year. He's not a thirty
five million dollar year player. And now that he is
(37:47):
your second best player, forget about competing for a championship, right,
And that's what really comes down to me for the
Clippers is that they let Paul George go, which I understand,
right because you tried it. You tried it with this group,
it didn't work. You get scared because you think, what's
gonna happen if we let James Harden go. Because the
Clippers are not about winning. The Clippers are about being
(38:10):
invited to the party. They just want to be relevant.
They don't really care winning a championship is so down
the list of what they want. They understand where they
came from, and I get that. I get that. You
go from Donald Sterling and the embarrassment of him being
removed as an owner. You like the last few years,
You've spent money and you've stayed in the conversation. Right,
we talk about the Clippers. They play big games, they're
(38:31):
featured on television. You have Kawhi, you have hard and
you have you have some big players and everything is wonderful. Right, Hey,
this is this is a pretty terrific thing. We have
bought relevance. We are relevant now and we are in
the conversation. We're a nice fifty win team and that's
what we want to be. They don't have any big
designs on winning a championship. If they were serious about it,
(38:51):
they would.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
Have done more. They would have moved on from.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
This Kawhi Paul George error that never got off the ground.
But you saw the statement when when Paul George left
they thanked him for they the last five years of
competition of what they did. Hey, we played pretty well
and we got to a conference final one time. Hey, okay,
I get it, but this is not a team that
is selling out to win. They're not the Knicks, they're
(39:16):
not the Sixers, they're not the Mavericks. They're not a
team that's going for it just the title. They just
want to go for it to be relevant, right. They
don't want to be planning the party and deciding who's
on the list. They just want to be invited to it.
We just like being a team that's not a laughing stock.
So I can't take the Clippers series as a contending
team because of moves like this. We're gonna give Harden
thirty five million for next because.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
What do you worry?
Speaker 1 (39:38):
People aren't going to come to the into It Dome
to go see. Oh, we got to make sure we're
opening a new state. That's the number one thing We're
opening the new arena. I can't take the Clippers seriously
because they just strive for being in the conversation.
Speaker 4 (39:49):
Although, go back to the first paragraph. James Harden is
still a good player. He was still what sixteen points
a game last year, but not twenty, not the kind
of shots he had gotten on other teams. But I
looked up the postseason. He's played one hundred and sixty
six playoff games in his career. We have a sample size,
ladies and gentlemen. Fifteen years in the league. He's only
(40:10):
won fifteen series and lost fifteen series, and then includes
the first round loss as a Clipper last year. And
for his long playoff career, the shooting percentages are down
once you get to the postseason. It's only forty two
percent from the floor for his postseason.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
Been at his best, James Harden would be really good
for three and a half quarters. Then he get tired
the last six minutes of a game, he wouldn't hit
shots and his teams would lose. Like that, That was
James Harden at his peak. Now here's James Harden sixteen
points a game and he's the second best.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Player on the team. Here, how are you gonna win
with that? You're not?
Speaker 1 (40:45):
I mean, let I can't take the Clipper Seriously, I
just can't exit. How about a fresco Jason Smith Steve
de sagerin from Mike Harmon. We have a big NFL
story on the way coming up next. Dodgers have just
tied the game with the Diamondbacks in the bottom of
the mine. It's Freddie Freeman. A two out RBI double
has tied it. We'll have more on this as well.
Keep it right here.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
The night is still rolling. This is Fox Sports Radio.
