Speaker 3 (00:28):

Speaker 3 (00:45):
The way tire buying should be a big night.

Speaker 4 (00:50):
I hear the SP's are going on and people are
cracking wise, So we got that going on, and that's
the only illusion I'm really gonna make to It's. Erina
Williams had a good one liner out white people liking
Caitlyn Clark. She really just cut to the chase in
the Caitlin Clark versus Angel Reese debate.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
I'd say the spis to me is like, it's almost
like they made it up. Mike, You're kidding, It's almost
like they made it up.

Speaker 6 (01:14):
It's almost like, but it's.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Not even during the All Star break anymore, Martin, I think,
is that a thing? It's always the dead day where
there was nothing going on on the calendar during the
All Star break?

Speaker 6 (01:24):
Is that no longer true? Is it only true this
year for the Olympics?

Speaker 5 (01:28):
Because I thought, I thought maybe they moved it up
for the Olympics because some of the athletes who.

Speaker 6 (01:32):
Would have been at the SPS would have then been
in Paris.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
Jen Brown should be in theory in the Olympics, and
he's at the SP's on the red carpet. So one
of the many subplots of what we've got to talk
about tonight.

Speaker 6 (01:45):
Did you see his date? He's doing just fine?

Speaker 5 (01:47):
Finals, MVP Eastern Converence, Living March and that one of
the Gondras access to He's he's doing just fine, Kayling.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
No, no, no, nobody's feeling sorry for Jalen Brown. If nothing else,
it it does add to some of the discourse related
to how these teams get chosen, right, because we had
a big debate when it came to Caitlin Clark being
left off and opportunities lost and all of that fun stuff.
We will get the w NBA All Star Game, which
is the women's national team against that All Star squad,

(02:17):
so Clark and Reese get to play together. It's all
all find and good. But when it came to the
men's national team, Jalen Brown left off and then Kawhi Leonard,
I think as we all presumed was gonna happen. I've
wondered aloud yesterday on air with Jason fitz whether Martin
this wasn't a Pro Bowl kind of situation for Kawhi Leonard.
I want to hang out a little bit. I'm gonna

(02:38):
work out a little bit and I'm gonna get credit
for being part of this organization.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
But now I'm gonna bout out.

Speaker 5 (02:44):
He very much stayed. I mean, he stayed for picture day.
So that's the key, right, that's the key.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
He stayed in for the team photos, which there's controversy
about that. We're gonna do that in about a half
hour from now, because you know, some of those illusions
have been shattered, all of those things that we been
pumping up for years. One of the Olympians really just
put a giant pin.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
In the balloon.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
You find Martin on Twitter at Martin Weiss. You hear
him Saturday nights, he and VJ getting after it. That's
what five to eight.

Speaker 6 (03:14):
Five day Pacific, eight to eleven Eastern.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
There you go. I knew that. Good for me.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
And then obviously in Detroit, Now how's that popping off?

Speaker 6 (03:23):
It's going west.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Couple of weeks getting the grim Ones out of the.

Speaker 6 (03:26):
System, six weeks in.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
You know what, Mike, yesterday I did my first hour
ever of solo radio, and I have.

Speaker 6 (03:33):
To say I survived.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
I think you'd be all right it went well. Did
you did you go into Q prompter and try to
get yourself to your timing down in terms of your
bullet points or did you just stare that clock down
like it was a defender, like you were gonna score
on them.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
You know, I found myself looking at the wall, just
kind of staring at the wall, be like, what do
you mean, Joellenbi did you picture that?

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Did you picture someone there that you were yelling at?

Speaker 6 (03:59):
I don't know. Maybe I was just yelling at the neighbor,
you know, was yelling at the neighbor.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (04:03):
That's a good question.

Speaker 5 (04:04):
I just kind of zoned out and I looked up
and I was, uh, it's been twelve minutes.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Oh, right back going to break see in a minute.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
All right, there you go. He's marred up. Mike Jason
still on vacation. He gave us a little clue. I
did tweet out about the show yesterday, and he tweeted
back with a mcdoniell McDonald's menu with a couple of
items we don't have here, but all of it was
in in euro was not in US dollars. So he's
still traveling abroad. If you see a guy in a

(04:33):
Mets or a Syracuse stuff, or maybe in a giant
cape because he likes wizarding stuff, that maybe he's that
guy wandering around. But the US men's national team first
warm up yesterday, we talked about it a bunch, just trying,
you know, first blush look.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
See as as it went through.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
One of the things that was in my timeline a
lot before the game Martin was the old Kobe Bryant
running through Paul Gasol. So I was really kind of
hoping for so that and I guess we got glimpses
of it with Dylan Brooks and Lebron James kind of
giving each other some some forearms, shivers up and around
the lane, some attempted trips and all of that stuff.

(05:11):
But you come out of it, and look, if you
didn't like seeing Lebron and Steph on the court together, whatever,
you're dead inside, let's find someone to give you a hug.

Speaker 6 (05:21):
And it's like a video game.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
It's like like when I was a kid and I
would play these video like NCAA twenty twenty five is
gonna come out soon, but you used to just after
a while, you draft all of your favorite players and
go figure. That's exactly what Team USA looks like. But
I do like the fact that they formulated. I said
this the other day. This feels like an actual team here,
Like you know, sometimes it's not the All Star game

(05:43):
where you're just throwing guys in, but there's there's an
appropriate amount of guards, there's appropriate amount of wings. Then
now there's finally an appropriate amount of bigs. Now that
they had duel embiid dude like kids did in high school. Again,
transfer schools to play on a better team.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
And then just go follow the hell out of every
buddy and go sit down. Listen, it's twelve minutes played.
I mean that would look like a guy is like, yeah,
I don't need to I don't need to play in
this one. But obviously rules and rules enforcement we watch
how it's gonna play, and very early on contact with
the Biggs was not allowed, and well he didn't learn
his lesson and was back on the bench pretty fast.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
Well, it's not only is that like the contact, because
this is the thing about international basketball versus the NBA.
We all complain about NBA officiating, but that's because that's
the ball that we watch.

Speaker 6 (06:28):
If we were watching.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
International ball regularly, you would understand that all refs are terrible.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
But it's international. I mean, it's universal.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
I mean it's it's like we celebrate the holidays in
some way, shape or form, even if you're not, you know,
going down the Sandy Claus Lane, you're still taking the
days off, You're still going to celebrate the hell out
of it, and you're still going to expect someone to
give you a president at the end of the day.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
Yeah, well, Joel Embiid, I think he's going to have
I know everybody was talking about knocking off the rust,
but when you just watch that first five minutes of
the team and how they kind of flowed together when
they were getting the doors blown off in the first
quarter by Canada at first half of the first quarter.
I'm like, I don't know how well the Joellenbiid that
I remember healthy fits into this international roster.

Speaker 6 (07:13):
I think not.

Speaker 5 (07:14):
Only does he foul aton, but also he's a ball stopper. Yeah,
and as well as he plays defensively right, which is
he's a very good defender. He does he is not
a back to the basket, does not care to be
a back to the basket big man in the way
that a lot of these other guys who are playing
an international ball will be. So I think my biggest

(07:37):
takeaway from yesterday was a USA is going to roll
to a gold medal, but b Joellenbiid probably should, probably
should be coming off the bench on this roster. But
I do wonder if that's even feasible. Because Grant Hill
was on the broadcast talking about how much how tough
the recruitment process.

Speaker 6 (07:55):
Was to get joellenbie to come and play for Team USA.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Well, there you go.

Speaker 4 (07:58):
I mean, poaching is not limited to college recruiting. I
mean you've got to figure out a way to get
him on board, and we go down and we'll talk
about Jalen Brown and some of his tweets. They're not
as cryptic as everybody made them out to believe. Believe
you could follow the bread crumbs pretty easily to what
he's talking about. But Derek White comes in. Anthony Edwards

(08:19):
we said the other day and people got all up
in arms saying, what do you mean you're the one.
You're the guys I want that guy on my squad,
saying I'm the guy.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
I love him along there.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
If he doesn't think that, and then he went out
and he bawled out, because that's that's the thing, then
you gotta go. But watching him and Lebron writ all
the video that was rolling around from hours before tip
off of the two of them working through stuff and communication,
he's clearly willing to put the time in. I think
everybody just tried. Like he got built up fast. So

(08:51):
we did, you know, an accelerated version of what we
do in sports media. We took our hatchets out and
started trying to chop that damn thing down really fast.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Love, unbridled, maybe perhaps unmitigated confidence. I love it especially
if you if if reflects on the court, and Anthony
Edwards is the type of player that, to me, it
absolutely reflects on the court that he thinks he's one
badm effort and I like that.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
When I was going on, my favorite athlete was Randy
Moss because he talked crazy.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
But that's it, right. I mentioned Kobe before.

Speaker 4 (09:22):
His whole thing was we know what play they're gonna run,
So I'm gonna go punch my teammate in the mouth.

Speaker 6 (09:27):
Yeah, I'm set the tone.

Speaker 4 (09:29):
And he had the look, I mean, there was no
emotion on his face, right, and he went back into
the defensive posture and away we went. But came to say,
we're not playing around, right, We're here to win this thing.
And it's been you know, that kind of mentality that
everybody's tried to foster all these years. Hence in whatever
sport we quote, mam, but mentality all the time, like

(09:50):
I want the guy that wants to eviscerate you, football, basketball, baseball,
whatever the case may be. You know, I want the
guy that wants to leave nothing left, no shred of
your dignity when it's all said and done. So if
I can get a team of those guys for Team USA,
and the youngest guy is the guy that's doing the
yapping off the jump.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Hey, that's the way.

Speaker 6 (10:10):
It is, what it is. It is what it is.
But I loved it. I loved it. I love the
kids energy and attitude.

Speaker 5 (10:15):
And it came out last year in the Feeble World
Cup when Steve Kerr had him on the bench. And
I know the quote is now circulating a little bit
more because people are paying more attention to international basketball
in the United States basketball men's national team. But when
he goes, you know, he had him on the bench
for Cam Johnson at first, and Steve Kerr told Anthony Edwards, well,
you know, even Kobe came off the bench for Dwayne

(10:37):
Wade came off the bench for Kobe, And Anthony Edward
said back, all right, like I get, we need to
do this to may need to do this to win,
but we ain't got no Kobe's out here right now.
And then after two practices he was just started into
the starting lineup and just happen to be the best
player on the team.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Got to go and earn your way.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
Cam Johnson, a guy that keeps getting talked about still
maybe on the move before this offseason is done. By
the way, the last thing with Edwards just really quick
in his postgame talking that he did have some nerves
and kind of admitting to that, you know, the stage
being a bit different.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
Yeah, I mean, which is pretty cool.

Speaker 4 (11:09):
I mean, yeah, it's an exhibition against Canada and a
bunch of guys that you see on the regular because
what they have ten NBA guys.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
Sure on that squad.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
I was really kind of hoping there'd be a big
shot or two just for Nemhard, just so I could
send video back to Smith because he's tormented by the
shot he made against the Knicks. I think he keeps
him up at night.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
I mean if I was the Knicks fan too, especially
watching him put it off the back iron a few
times last night, It's like, oh, so now you want
to do like this, Now, this is how you want
to show.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
It's a bigger stage, it's an international stage. Hey.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
We'll continue with more Team USA talk as we go on.
Jason Tatum a little u or uh looking sideways like
help help in oppressor that he gave, and more on
Jalen Brown and shoe controversies that followed this men's national
team at Martin Wise where you find him on Twitter.

Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.

Speaker 3 (12:45):

Speaker 2 (12:47):

totally of context.

Oh yeah, well, after this promo, I'm gonna take you

Ye, hey, welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith
Show with me and Mike Harmon.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
I didn't even get my name on the print out.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
This guy quit on me like in printing stuff out
like it's half everywhere, and my name's not even on
the damn show.

Speaker 5 (13:23):
I mean, I mean, come on, man, right now, is
like the senior who finished like all a's and is
the last day of class.

Speaker 6 (13:31):
You can't get him to do anything.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
I mean, come on, I see Jason Smith. It's hard
to get that name on the show. I know where's
whose best friend is on here? I can't even tell
Swan it's got you.

Speaker 6 (13:42):
On there though.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
I mean, you know we got your your Twitter on there,
got his on baseball.

Speaker 6 (13:48):
On right now. I was trying to get the TV's going.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
I know he sees a Jenant, Well, get him on,
get him over, get him in. I get that.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
No question about a Martin Weiss. Where you find Martin
on Twitter? Find me over at swollen down harassed Smith
at How about a Fresca in his travels. We've got Alex,
We've got Shay, We've got Steve Disager at the news
desk tonight, keeping us surprised of everything going on in
our sporting universe. Final couple of days before the MLB
All Star Break here in Los Angeles, people are putting

(14:18):
out the pictures of floating dumpsters on fire because of
the Dodgers' efforts against Philadelphia, very rough series and the
pitching staff. I'm trying to get my left arm back
in shape here Martin, that I can at least give
one or two good innings as a crafty southball because
as a you know, middle aged man, that's what I
would constitute at this point.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
Yeah, I mean the Dodgers really to me, since Mookie
Betts went down, they they floated a little bit, but
I mean it has been disastrous. And if there's a
few teams that here in LA you can actually feel
it when they're not playing well, like you could feel
the tension with the Lakers wh're not playing well. Clippers
could win the Finals and it feels like it wouldn't
retiate at all. The Rams were in the Super Bowl,

(15:01):
you couldn't tell well the Dodgers not playing well, that's
all people have.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
To talk gets into everybody's moods right up in here
in the Fox Sports radio studios and on the streets
of La the car flags fly at half mast. I mean,
there's a lot of stuff going on there. But let's
get back to the men's national team. I thought it
was interesting, right, you're doing all the interviews and flowing
before they head to Abu Dhabi for the next round
of exhibitions. In this but Jason Tatum was asked about

(15:29):
Jalen Brown and his omission from the Olympic team, but
more importantly, just the very simple hey, you talk to him.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
Talking about having huh yeah, I mean there's just so
many guys that could, you know, take the last spot
or whatever.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
It is, So yeah, the ambient noise makes a little
differ perhaps, but in the end, just being asked flat out,
have you talked to him? And he's looking around like
help help. It's like in a few good men when
he's going hell, hell help.

Speaker 5 (16:12):
They Part of the reason why the ambient noise was
so loud was because Jason Tatum had nothing to say, right.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
He's looking around for help, like, how am I supposed
to answer this question. What's gonna make me not look
like a jerking or out of touch or whatever.

Speaker 5 (16:26):
Yeah, I mean I guess you know what, Hey, maybe
you know they are coworkers. Maybe they're not the best
of friends. He's not send it a text over like hey, sorry,
you're not gonna make it to pairs.

Speaker 6 (16:35):
But again, like I don't have the biggest to me.

Speaker 5 (16:38):
Jalen Brown being left off of the Olympic team is
not you know, some massive international incident that we have
to break down from top to bottom, left to right,
because I honestly think that if you look at the
rafter as it was before, I understand a Kawhi two
way wing, Jalen Brown two way wing.

Speaker 6 (16:58):
You think you just plug him.

Speaker 5 (16:59):
In plugging, Sure, but I think that they they had
too many wings in the first place.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
Well, but that's the thing right now.

Speaker 4 (17:05):
You bring in white marksman, plus defense, whatever else, and
he's a guy that fits into whatever role. Not to
say he's just happy to be here, because he's obviously
going to try to play his ass offense, sure, and
earn his keep. But the point being, he's not another
here's an a of the superstar that we have to
bring in in. Qua is just like he's a different

(17:26):
animal like all together, right, his attitude, how he approaches things, whatever.
And then you you kind of read between the line
in terms of high versus low management. You know, you
think you're low management, but your high management. I'm just
going to all movie references left and right up in here.
But him getting left off and he says, it might
be about the shoes at Nike. What are we doing?

(17:48):
He wears Nikes? Wow, well he doesn't get endorsed by them,
but he but he wears he takes.

Speaker 5 (17:53):
The swoosh off of his shoe or colors it in
like he wears the Nikes. But it's almost like he
wears the Nikes in protest, Dalen. I'll just let you know,
there's several other shoes.

Speaker 6 (18:01):
You could choose a.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
Lot of people that will produce a shoe for you.

Speaker 5 (18:04):
I mean, especially him and his like agency, the people
that he hangs out with are in terms of manages.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
Where are now though, I mean, you just won the
finals MVP, you're coming off the title.

Speaker 8 (18:16):
This is where everybody wherever, from whomever you want to
go with, right, every company probably you know, doing everything
to uh, you know bend down genuflect and give you
a giant bag cash if you wanted to go down
that road.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
So he's got whatever stance he's trying to make there,
and but I agree with you, it's not some massive thing.
The Clerk one was interesting just from the the economics
and profile of the game and all of those and
trying to get more and more eyeballs on with her
in attendance.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
So there's an argument with Jaylen Brown.

Speaker 4 (18:48):
I mean, in the end, are we are we parsing
out every individual stats from Team USA. We did it
yesterday because it's really one of the only things in focus.
It's an exhibition gaming, it's Canada. But you were favored
by twelve and a half, you know, one by fourteen
and away we go.

Speaker 6 (19:05):
But see to me that the thing with Jalen Brown
seems to me so obviously we all remember watching the
last dance because we were just sitting there and there
was nothing else to do.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
Sure, Kiley raided Michael Jordan, you know, and so do
you remember took that personally?

Speaker 5 (19:19):
The the Bradford Smith story where Michael Jordan just made
up that the Bradford Smith was talking junk and all
of a sudden, he's like, I'm gonna kill you. Meanwhile,
poor the Bradford is just sitting there like.

Speaker 6 (19:30):
What what the hell did I do it to you?
Way it works, I didn't do anything to you.

Speaker 5 (19:33):
And all of a sudden, you know, he's frobally looking
over at his teammates and he's like, Hey, you can't kid,
what did you talk bad?

Speaker 4 (19:39):
Who did put my name in his because now I'm
joining the ire of Michael Jordan.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
Now he's gonna score fifty on me.

Speaker 5 (19:45):
Jalen Brown seems to me to be the type of
player who who took, to quote Isaiah Thomas, takes that personally, well.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
You get the rabbit ears aer up.

Speaker 4 (19:54):
It's like you were staring at the wall, you know,
doing the monologue for your show. There was somebody there,
might have just been a ghostly figure that you were
staring through as you did that.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
But same thing here like and and that's look.

Speaker 4 (20:06):
I got no problem if you've got to find wherever,
you gotta find motivation, right, if you that that chip
on your shoulder, I mean, you might look a little
weird after a while with the you know slights. I mean,
and Jordan did. And I'm a Chicago kid. So Jordan
is you know up here, you know, in the heavens. Yeah, exactly,
Jordika and all of that stuff. And so when guys

(20:27):
start paying to go back and take away stats and
have fun like that, I take that personally, and I
can understand why Michael Jordan, people of his stature in
the game at that time, they're looking sideways at some
of some of the folks going down that path. But
you know, you've got to have that level to some

(20:49):
degree to be great at anything that you do. Someone
didn't believe in me, parents didn't support this, whatever the
case may be.

Speaker 5 (20:57):
But also didn't they They switched up Team US not
too long ago. Now they want you to be a
part of the World Cups and things going prior, and
I know that obviously Lebron instead, like there was a
lot of guys that are now added to the team
that weren't in that World Cup, but they have played
in previous Olympics and.

Speaker 6 (21:13):
All this, Like, because what do you always hear.

Speaker 5 (21:16):
I don't even know if it's true, honestly, but I
hear it's always repeated. Well, you know the thing about
the French, they've been playing together for a really long time.
The thing about the Spaniards, they've been playing.

Speaker 4 (21:27):
All everybody ever do the deep dive of how many Olympics, how.

Speaker 6 (21:31):
Many actual games that they've all played.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
Because they're guys that look like they're in their mid
thirties and have lost their hair, doesn't mean they've necessarily
all played together.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
But I think that the United States was because it
used to be to show up the tryouts and then
you make the team.

Speaker 6 (21:43):
Right, It's not that anymore.

Speaker 4 (21:44):
So I appreciate the effort on that side, right to
have the continuity, et cetera. But what we're talking about
the long, arduous journey that an NBA season is, particularly
for a lot of these guys that are on this
squad right now, and this is where we have that
a big inflection point to the roster.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
Right.

Speaker 4 (22:03):
We talk about Anthony Edwards on one extreme at twenty two,
but look at all the other guys that are.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
Maybe not at the tail end, but you can see
it coming.

Speaker 6 (22:12):
Oh, you know, guys on the downs, the down slope
of the career.

Speaker 4 (22:16):
Yeah, just a matter of what that slope is. If
we want to go back to our math classes.

Speaker 5 (22:19):
Which we don't how far it is, right, is it
a double black diamond or is it a bunny hill?
You know?

Speaker 4 (22:24):
Actually done get this, you know, because first thing, I'm
thinking of my knees on a slope. That's not gonna
be good for anybody, but it is that point, right,
So getting to say guys to say hey, I'll commit
to this, this and this, I mean, it's fool hardy
at this point. Sure, right, And you've got to figure
out what the next just like the NBA trying to
figure out who the next face is, which is why

(22:46):
everybody ran to Anthony Edwards as fast as they did,
because like, all these guys are going to be gone
pretty soon, so where can we find and and he's American,
right because that get begets the Cooper flag conversation that's
everybody's having and falling all over themselves as well, because
he's not from Serbia, he's not from Latvia, he's not

(23:07):
from Greece.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
Well.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
Also not only that, when Anthony Edwards turns on the microphone,
he's engaging, he's charismatic. Like my thing about the Jordan
comparisons is not mean for comparison, trying to compare how
many if Anthony vers will win six championships I'm gonna
go out on the limit, say.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
Probably not, I'm gonna go less. I'll take the under.

Speaker 6 (23:26):
I'll take the under right, sure for sure.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
But when you see he's got the the to be
a true like face of the league, in my opinion,
to be that type of person, you have to have
some charisma, You have to have some uh some cajones, you.

Speaker 6 (23:39):
Have to be you have to have some self belief.

Speaker 5 (23:42):
Right.

Speaker 4 (23:42):
Well, you don't get to hide in mystery anymore, exactly right.
That's the one thing, Jordan. Those guys, it got to
be built up for them, right because people were on
the payroll of the teams or whatever that were covering
them in general. So all that stuff Michael was doing
got to stay under wraps for a very long time. Sure,
everybody else around the league under wraps for a very

(24:03):
long time except for the guys that you know. Go
back to the late seventies and early eighties where the
league was on some shaky terms before Magic and Birds
show up and all the rumored conjecture speculation of what
guys may or may not have been on when they
were playing in those games. But you didn't have all
social media cameras in your face everywhere you went, all

(24:24):
of those and not to dismiss it, like guy's changed
with the times, right, Like the battle between the eras
Martin is always so disingenerous ingenuous?

Speaker 6 (24:32):
All right?

Speaker 4 (24:32):
What training products do we have? And is smoking still
recommended by doctors or not?

Speaker 3 (24:38):
Like what do we do?

Speaker 4 (24:39):
What?

Speaker 5 (24:40):
It definitely beat Steph Curry one on one low?

Speaker 6 (24:43):
Do you know?

Speaker 4 (24:44):
But that's what I mean, Like where are we playing?
Like are we going time travel in this version of Steph?
Or does pistol Peak get to come along and have training,
nutrition and travel off days?

Speaker 3 (24:58):
All of these things that a he.

Speaker 9 (25:00):
Played twice a day, seven times a week just wasn't
on TV or it was on Taptalan, Right, go back
to the old NBA stuff there.

Speaker 4 (25:11):
But legitimately it is the You've got to be that
personality to go through. And that's why a lot of
these guys, even on this current team USA, couldn't be
that guy because there don't.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
Want to give you a whole lot in the at
the mic.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
When's the last time and I'm not saying this to
disparage and by any means, but when's the last time
you heard Jason Tatum say anything that made you say.

Speaker 4 (25:33):
Hmmm, well, I liked it when he got all mad
when people were calling him out because he would then
respond with two really good games.

Speaker 3 (25:40):
That seemed to be his pattern.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
Get into a funk where the media starts to swirl
on him a bit. I'll show you here's my thirty.

Speaker 3 (25:47):
And fourteen game.

Speaker 6 (25:49):
Right.

Speaker 10 (25:50):
But you know, in terms of good quips, now, nah, yeah,
that's that's Anthony Ewards is the best quote in the
league right now, and that's part of the reason why
he's elevated to the status that that people have him at.

Speaker 3 (26:01):
Now and adopted in Joel embiid. Sure, he's a pretty
good quote.

Speaker 6 (26:05):
He is a good quote. He is a good quote.

Speaker 4 (26:09):
I don't know what he's gonna say most of the time,
which is part of the engagement.

Speaker 5 (26:12):
Well, and the problem with him at this point is
his game on the court, even with the MVP and
just so many injuries. When he's healthy, he's a monster,
but he's always either in recovery or ramping up from
some injury, and he spends so much time kind of
foul hunting that it's like his game is not It's
like when Harden was at the peak of his powers

(26:34):
in Houston. It was There's no doubt he was incredible,
but people would just be like, I don't like to
watch it, you know, because he was dribbled to dribble,
step back, three pointer. There's nothing you could do about it.
He's gonna score thirty game. But it's just like, oh man,
where is the this game? It's fun to watch when
the guys are playing above the rim, and this is not.

Speaker 6 (26:53):
I mean, James Harden has a dunks in two thousand
and six.

Speaker 4 (26:58):
That may actually be true, but you know, they finally
did take away a bunch of his free throw shooting.
But but your point is well taken, right, It's got
to be aesthetically pleasing, and especially if we're gonna start
getting national games after football goes away seven days a
week under this new proposal. I mean, you've got to
have a product that you got to get in there
and sell, sell, sell flying above the rim and then

(27:20):
being ready for all your in game and postgame interviews.

Speaker 5 (27:23):
Absolutely, and I think that's part of the reason why
you know, we like Anthony Edwards in the place that
he's at, or at least I like Anthony Edwards in
the place that he's at because he's gonna go up
there and tell you know, I told Carlynton to stop
f and falling right.

Speaker 6 (27:35):
You know, it's like he didn't.

Speaker 5 (27:37):
No, I'm the number one option, And actually I was
pretty nervous. He's not thinking about how the quote will
be received. He's thinking about what's the answer to the
question I.

Speaker 8 (27:47):
Was just asked.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
I appreciate that.

Speaker 4 (27:48):
Am I love the absolute antithesis of the clip that
we played from Jason Tatum where in the video he's
literally looking around like am I supposed to answer this?
Can I just say, no comment? What's the appropriate way
to do this? Because then he fumbles into the well.
A bunch of guys could have been here. I mean,
you could have saved yourself if you just excise that.

(28:09):
Just say, hey, no, I haven't talked to him, Hope
he's good. Done asked answered instead you go, eah, A
bunch of guys could have been here. It's like, no,
no media training one oh one.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
I know you had to have gone through that a
couple of times.

Speaker 5 (28:23):
I mean, Jason Tatum was probably in media training at
the eighth grade.

Speaker 3 (28:27):
You had no question about it. I mean they did
a little snippet, they sign.

Speaker 4 (28:31):
A bunch of autographs, right, the line up the balls
in a ballroom and they just go one by one signing.
And there were a bunch of clips of guys signing
and being asked one the first time they signed an
autograph was most of the guys said seventh or eighth grade.

Speaker 5 (28:44):
Oh yeah, because that's the thing about basketball. If you know,
you know a lot of times, if you know you know.

Speaker 4 (28:50):
And if you get the early growth spurt, sure right,
and you're standing three heads above everybody else.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
I'll take the shot.

Speaker 5 (28:57):
This guy might be the guy. He's a six '
five seventh grader the jump shot. All right, let's have
this conversation.

Speaker 4 (29:02):
I'll take a shot with that. Here, sign my mini
ball in between algebra biology. He's Martin Weisson for Jason Smith.
I'm by Carbon here. Fox Sports Radio coming up next.
Cam Newton said, I want to be Greg Well, kinda.
We'll tell you what that's all about, but first we
got our guys. Steve Desager at the news desk with
everything going on in our sporting universe.

Speaker 3 (29:23):
I see hello, guys.

Speaker 11 (29:24):
And by the way, as you were talking to USA Basketball,
the under seventeen US team won the Feeble World Cup
This past weekend, a tournament concluded in Turkey. One of
those games, they blew out China and the US Kids
had thirty three steals in the game fast Hands. The
tournament MVP was Cameron Boozer, son of Carlos Boozer, out
of Miami might go to the University of Miami.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
Well on, really, he's got a kid. Come on, I'm
so old.

Speaker 6 (29:51):
How old are you exactly know?

Speaker 4 (29:53):
My god, I remember when getting drafted by the Bulls.

Speaker 11 (29:55):
He has been a high school national Player of the Year.
But the US are They won a couple of games
by the time they got to this China matchup in
this tournament, and they beat him one forty six to
sixty two. And then the next day the US Kids
beat the Philippines by ninety six points, one forty one
to forty five, and then beat Canada and the quarterfinals

(30:18):
by fifty one, then won the semifinal by eighty over
New Zealand, and last Sunday, the US Kids won the
Under seventeen World Cup, won twenty nine eighty eight against Italy.

Speaker 4 (30:28):
I will quote the great Duke from Rocky throw the
damn towel.

Speaker 6 (30:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (30:34):
The average winning margin for the US kids sixty four
points in the tournament, obliterating the record. And no, they've
never lost a FEBA Under seventeen World Cup game. Ever,
it's like fifty to oho or so at this point.
US men's basketball, you know. The senior five on five
team won their first exhibition last night on FS one,

(30:55):
down eleven to one early beat Canada in Vegas, eighty
six seventy two. Anthony Davis off the bench last night,
nineteen minutes, ten points, eleven rebounds, four block shots. The
next tune up games are Monday and Wednesday from Abu
Dhabi on FS one, and with the time change a difference,
it'll be noon Eastern time US against Australia and then

(31:16):
against Serbia next week. And after that the US has
two exhibitions in London as tune ups. One WNBA game
Tonight's New York at home now nineteen to four beat
Chicago ninety one seventy six Sabrini Yenescu twenty one points.
Longtime defensive coordinator Monte Kiffen passed away at the age
of eighty four. The Tennessee Titans signed safety Jamal Adams.

(31:38):
Justin Thomas leads the Scottish Open by one stroke after
a first round sixty two. At Wimbledon, Barbara Krachikova upset
number four Elena Rebakina in the Semis in three sets,
sixty four in the third. Number seven seed Jasmine Paullini
advanced to Saturday's final. Don't forget the Euro Soccer Final
is Sunday three pm Eastern Time on Fox TV, and

(31:59):
then on Fox Sunday night the Copa America Final. As
for Major League Baseball this evening, we've got three games
still going. In Houston bottom of the eighth, Astro six
to three over the Marlins. Mariner's got four in the
top of the first, Seattle Leeds at the Angels five
nothing top of the fourth inning, and to the fifth.
Braves at Diamondbacks scoreless. Boston shut out Oakland seven nothing,

(32:23):
Cubs won eight nothing at Baltimore, Tampa Bay held on
five to four over the Yankees, and Philadelphia beat the
Dodgers five to one, hitting three solo homers. Among the
day games Mets in Pittsburgh, each one that Pirates win
was one nothing. At Milwaukee, Paul Skeen six to oh
got the win seven no hit innings, eleven strikeouts, one walk.

(32:44):
He threw ninety nine pitches. He has an ERA of
one point nine to zero.

Speaker 3 (32:48):
So far back to you, it's kind of a big
deal in that rookie season.

Speaker 11 (32:52):
Yeah, maybe start him next week at the All Star Game,
just a thought.

Speaker 4 (32:55):
Or let him finish one of these no hit bids.
What is it, Dave Roberts, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (33:00):
I think the worst thing about this is it's not
that the guy's getting pulled.

Speaker 6 (33:04):
Is now you expect almost the guy to get pulled.

Speaker 5 (33:07):
You're never gonna see it like it's like you never,
So it takes a whole fun out of like the second, third, fourth,
fifth inning, when you're like, oh, this guy's on a heater,
he's gonna do it.

Speaker 11 (33:15):
Having nothing to do with Paul Skeens, I'll repeat my
general point that if he's not going to finish the
nine innings, go ahead and pull him anyway, because the
whole point is to close out a no hitter, not
to get close to one. So if you're okay with
him throwing one hundred and thirty pitches, which is realistically
what it would have taken today, then by all means
keep him in.

Speaker 4 (33:34):
Hey, someone made a cool custom trading card of schemes
where part of his training is throwing a football, which
is what Noe Ryan used to do.

Speaker 3 (33:44):
You know what, here's a guy used to throw one
hundred and thirty pitches.

Speaker 11 (33:47):
Chris kids used to grow up throwing pitches and not
everything at one hundred miles an hour.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Now there's that things that are a little different.

Speaker 4 (33:52):
We'll get deeper into skeens and all of that fun
stuff a little bit later on, but I will just
also comment one last thing. I do a weekly hit
in Baltimore. They couldn't win one against the stinking Cubs
for me, like.

Speaker 11 (34:05):
Got shot in twice. They'd only been shut out twice
the whole year until facing the Cubs.

Speaker 4 (34:11):
The Juggernaut Cubs where everybody is burning things around Wrigley Field.

Speaker 3 (34:15):
Thanks Steve Martin weiss In for Jason Smith.

Speaker 4 (34:18):
We're here live inthe Tirac dot Com, Fox Sports Radio
Studios and Yes coming up next, Cam Newton says he
wants to be like Greg will tell you what that
means next on Fox.

Speaker 2 (34:28):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 4 (34:35):
Are we doing a segment on Overrated Bands now eight
seven seven No attually home? Do you want to at
me for that little jab? Or you can send him
to Martin at Martin Weis and he can read them
aloud and I'll tell you this. He will tell me
what they think about America. This No, this was one
of my first ring tones.

Speaker 2 (34:54):
Is that right?

Speaker 5 (34:54):
It also shows my age, But one of my first
ring tones was smells like teen spirit as a black
kid in Louisiana.

Speaker 6 (35:01):
Go figure?

Speaker 3 (35:01):
How about that?

Speaker 4 (35:02):
And then you got a lot of folks that would
have downloaded the other Navanna song that was part of
the Batman soundtrack, Something in the Way, like It's slow Dirge.

Speaker 6 (35:13):
I mean I know this album front the back?

Speaker 3 (35:15):
Is that right?

Speaker 6 (35:16):
I do?

Speaker 3 (35:17):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (35:18):
It was one of those that was in college. You
got that and you got Pearl Jams ten. I couldn't
avoid either of them, So I have a wrongful hate
I think towards them, just because I couldn't escape them.

Speaker 3 (35:33):
The better part of a year.

Speaker 6 (35:34):
I can get no matter where you turned. Mine was
Happy by Pharrell. It came out and first of all,
this song.

Speaker 5 (35:42):
Is so great, and then two weeks later, this song
actively makes me angry.

Speaker 6 (35:47):
It doesn't make me happy anymore.

Speaker 4 (35:49):
See, now you need to write that script in a
film where that becomes the trigger for a bunch of
violence or some acting out or thereabouts. All right, So
I teased it ahead, right, I want to be like
Greg cam Newton, master of the funny hats.

Speaker 3 (36:05):
Like for real. So he had all ties together just
so beautifully, not even intended. But he didn't get an
invite to Christian McCaffrey's recent wedding and in a podcast
kind of went off on.

Speaker 5 (36:16):
It to the McCaffrey's man, Christian and oh no, hold
on the time.

Speaker 11 (36:21):
To not.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
Damn see, Matt, I couldn't get an invite? Well, I know,
is it because of the bron prairid of people? Was
brock there? But it was the part Medo.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
Stole the music from our show.

Speaker 2 (36:41):
You're like, I wasn't there because I would have crashed
that mother.

Speaker 3 (36:45):
I would have crashed it.

Speaker 6 (36:46):
Man, Oh my god, Loos.

Speaker 2 (36:48):
Like to have so much fun. Man, I don't know
if I would have been able to go.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
I at least wanted to say no, bro can't man.

Speaker 8 (36:55):
I would at least wanted to give you a presidency.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
I'm gonna send you again I found out.

Speaker 3 (36:59):
Jazz said, damn, baby, they look good.

Speaker 2 (37:01):
I said, yeah, they do look good.

Speaker 5 (37:03):
But the first thing she said, she said, Olivia changed
outfits three times.

Speaker 6 (37:08):
One of the ophics could have been a Damna would.

Speaker 4 (37:11):
Have been wow, damne, Matt, I want to like Greg,
Come on, Greg, And there it is, right there, Greg Olsen,
our teammate a Fox broadcast squad.

Speaker 3 (37:25):
Well, he looked like he was having a really good time.

Speaker 4 (37:27):
Photo that was put up so Cam Newton saying, I
wish I could have had that look a little bit
faded on his face. Now McCaffrey has since replied, but
go ahead.

Speaker 5 (37:37):
Mark, Well, Greg Olsen absolutely was having the time of
his life at that wedding. You could, you know, you
could always tell what somebody's at a wedding and having
a little too much fun because they've lost some buttons.

Speaker 6 (37:49):
And the eyes, the.

Speaker 3 (37:50):
Eyes said, yeah, they'll tell you everything.

Speaker 5 (37:53):
They kind of the slight donut glazed eye right there
in Greg Olsen's face as he was standing there.

Speaker 6 (37:59):
And I'm look great by the way he's disheveled but.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
Still look powerful and attractive. Man. I mean he gets
after it. I mean, there's no question about it.

Speaker 4 (38:07):
Loved him when it with the Bears, and I've been
salty ever since they got rid of him because it
was a bad move. We had a great conversation at
a Super Bowl party many years ago. I'm like, I'm
gonna turn this microphone off now, let me ask you
a question.

Speaker 6 (38:20):
How many buttons did you have on at that point?

Speaker 3 (38:22):
No, No, it was early in the night.

Speaker 4 (38:23):
We you know, we were still we hadn't gotten to
that part of the evening quite yet.

Speaker 3 (38:29):
We did run into each.

Speaker 4 (38:30):
Other a little bit later, but Christian McCaffrey replied, well,
you know, it would have been nice to have him there.
There was a great night, but you know would have
been better if Cam were here. I haven't gotten a
text back in four years. In fact, they just go
green now. So Cam, there's your reason for the invite,

(38:53):
but it is always because he did go on. In
the podcast The fourth and one Podcast with Cam Newton
got to explain the Hey invite me. I would have
sent you a gift, but I've always told people here
you're getting married together. I don't need to come. You
could literally write, do not come, but let me know
you got something going on and send me the registry
link I will probably send you a pretty nice present.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
I'm that guy. I want to be your teammate. I
get it.

Speaker 4 (39:15):
There's limitations, and maybe you hate me. Maybe he put
up with me in the hallway is just enough. But
invite us. I'll get you a to I'll get you yeah, exactly.
Here's a spatula. Here's the you know, the forty dollars
ice tray that your parents all told you you were
nuts for asking for the lunatic for work.

Speaker 3 (39:32):
Got it.

Speaker 5 (39:32):
I will say, when you think that you have potential
to be invited to a wedding, like, I don't know
if you keep track of this type of stuff in
your head. I didn't until I got about this age
when all of my friends started getting married. But do
you think you have potential to be invited to a
wedding and then you don't get invited?

Speaker 6 (39:48):
I mean, it just breaks your heart.

Speaker 4 (39:51):
See I crossed that bridge a long long time ago.
Now I got eighteen and sixteen year old, so it
was always becoming a much bigger deal. Are they going
down to one of the set of grandparents? How does
this play family? Not family?

Speaker 3 (40:04):
Because a lot of them modern day kids aren't coming.

Speaker 5 (40:07):
Absolutely, that's a whole other world, which really implies a
whole lot of other things could potentially be going on.

Speaker 4 (40:15):
So, yeah, you want to go to that party, but
the idea of being if it's a travel thing, there's
a lot of implications, a lot of expectations. But yeah,
once upon a time, maybe I would get a little
bit out of sort of thing. Really, I thought we
were a little better off than that. And then you
think about, well, they're paying for it themselves. I'm an
extra head that's got to fly across. They're doing me

(40:37):
a favor, so I'll just stay home.

Speaker 6 (40:40):
I get I.

Speaker 5 (40:41):
I was recently not invited to a wedding this summer,
and I felt very much like.

Speaker 6 (40:45):
Cam Newton did.

Speaker 5 (40:46):
I would at least got you a gift. Now I'm
not even inviting you to my wedding.

Speaker 3 (40:50):
How about that?

Speaker 4 (40:51):
Hey, look at that reciprocity. Now it's you know, you
got beef. Now you're jailing Brown and Nike. Look what
you just did there? Hey, coming up next, Martin does
a show in Detroit, and I thought this story would
be perfect. It's aman Ross, Saint Brown, and an injury
you won't believe
