Speaker 2 (00:21):
This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Let's Go All Star Week continues here The Jason Smith
Show with Me Mike Carmon Live Forthetirac dot com, Fox
Sports Radio Studios.

Speaker 4 (00:37):
It's Chris Plank.

Speaker 5 (00:39):
You hear him tolerating tormenting sometimes in kind, the man
that is Arnie Spanier on Sunday evenings here Fox Sports Radio.
Please to have him in, a man who's well versed
in the collegiate world, so he can teach us all
a little bit about the highways and byways and media days.
While we watched the benches get separated in this Orioles

(01:02):
Yankees game after Kurse Dad got hit in the head,
all sorts of fireworks right off the jump.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
Chris, I think I need to go change my game
that I have on right now.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
I was watching this much anticipated, much talked about matchup
of the Wizards via the Hawks in the NBA Summer League. Right, yeah,
let's go. Yeah yeah, it looks like I need to
go watch this baseball game. How are you, Mike Carmen?
I pumped the hang out. You've been You've been a
toe in the road this week. I think that's the

(01:33):
proper phrase where I don't know it not you've created
a new one that I don't know. That's what's what's
his excuse?

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Where is he? This week? So I dipped for vacation.

Speaker 5 (01:41):
This is actually gonna end up being the longest he
and I have been off radio together since we were
put on radio together ten years ago. Oh wow, So
I went on vacation. So remember remember the draft? Who
used to be one night for the NBA.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (01:56):
So I scheduled my vacation to leave after night one.
Well what became night wanted the draft? Like, all right,
I'll be here, we'll do the brawny thing. I'll get
on a plane and i'll leave. Oh wait, wait, wait
we added night too, Like I'm traveling to Europe. Well,
but it's funny.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
They added night too, and they put it in the
middle of the freaking afternoon, right too, right, so just
bury it there. We're not We're not even gonna do
it in prime time. I was like, okay, this makes sense.
So I was gone a week and now he is traveling.
I think he should be on his way back either
well now or in the next twenty four hours, because
we are scheduled to do a show on Monday, and

(02:32):
knowing him, he'll need some recovery time because he doesn't
fly well. But I did Europe, came back and right
as I left, he went. So they're doing like a
bunch of Harry Potter haunts and whatever, being the big
nerd he is, which is really cool. My gosh, man,
if my son came to me and said, we're gonna
go check out Harry Potter stuff for vacation, I don't
know how I would handle that. Well, would you go

(02:53):
to london't you see some of the filming stuff here
in Los Angle?

Speaker 4 (02:57):
How I would handle that? I think Jude get a
bay Fall Club right now, that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Well, he's got a daughter, that's you know daughter. I'd
get a golf club in her hand. Well, she'd play softball.
She's actually pretty damn good too. She's a big hitter,
so you might be uh, you know, paying attention to
her in the short order here there you go. So
so that that kind of thing. So, yeah, certainly just

(03:22):
a little odd. But yeah, this week we've we've had
a parade of stars. We started with Arnie Spaniard. Yeah,
and then Arnie's in here to Monday night too, because
what you guys are in for Cadino and Rich Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:32):
Right, schedules shuffling up and dealing nice. I get the
note from the boss said, do you want to sure
different time time slot, different energy, different you know kind
of flow of things.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
I have a question, Yeah, hit me.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
So when when it's you and Jason is out, do
they come to you and say, all right, who do
you want one night?

Speaker 4 (03:53):
Have you reached that level of power yet? In my
carmen y, I.

Speaker 5 (03:57):
Get a nice conversation with the boss. All right, we'll
pull the curtain back a little bit ago. And and
you know I'm not gonna my shoulders are messed up,
so I can't do any of the you know, pat
yourself on the back or whatever.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Got you, but we have a conversation of you know,
what are you feeling? What's going on? And kind of
who and what and why and how it ends up
being parsed out day to day. Uh, that I can't
speak to. But yeah, you made the list.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
I appreciate that.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Fine, I mean, which is what I think you were
trying to ask there. So I'm just say no, no,
I just wanted to know how much power you have.
That's what I'm trying to figure out. How often I
have to just agree with you tonight and when I
can push back and fight because oh you should push
back and fight out everything I was gonna say if
it's yeah, you get to call your shots and I'm
kissing up to you and I'm letting you I mean,
because already thinks he calls the shots around here.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
I don't know if you've noticed that or not.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
There are clinical terms for that that we shan't go
into now, because you know, it's sports talk radio. But
certainly delusions of grander, delusions of grand wait come to
mind first and foremost like that only hijacked. How many
segments did he hijack on Monday?

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Alex? What was it three? Maybe all of things. So
what do you mean which ones?

Speaker 5 (05:04):
No?

Speaker 4 (05:04):
No, no, jed like. For the most part he played
pretty good. We kept him between the lines.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
You know.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
It's one of those things like you're on a on
a ride, I don't know, pick your favorite theme park,
and you're on the thing where you're kind of bumping
back and forth against the rails. We did a little
of that, but there were a couple of times where
it was clear that if he had the opportunity to
hit the hey, we're going to take this track not
well traveled.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Oh yeah, no, no, you did.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
That on me a couple of times, and I said, hey,
could de Sac come back here?

Speaker 4 (05:31):
Yeah? Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
My biggest frustration is he'll drive you into a wall
and then expect you to fix the car and get
you out of there.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
No, well done, we did, We did okay. You know Ernie.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
You know, I grew up listening to Ernie, so I
used to be putting things together for trading card shows.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
He would be the guy on in the evening.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Yeah, and he'd be begging for your calls, baby, talking
about the greatness of the Knicks. Good to see nothing
has changed in the span of the last fifteen to
twelve but.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
That's you said.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Some guys still beg for calls, So that's the way
it works. Hey, I'll just say, hey, you know, get
us on Twitter if you're entertaining and you give us
a little bit of entertainment value on the topic at hand,
we'll listen to you. We'll read it out at playing show.
I know you love to monitor the socials, as do
I at Swollen Dome.

Speaker 4 (06:17):
If you're just.

Speaker 5 (06:17):
Being mean to Jason for being means sake, save it
till Monday.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
He'll be back. He'll read it then.

Speaker 5 (06:22):
Right now, he's on vacation traveling the McDonald's of Europe,
so he'll be back in full effect on Monday. As
we sit in for Covino and Rich, we are broadcasting
live from the tire act dot Com, Fox Sports Radio Studios,
tirect dot com. We'll help you get there an unmatched selection, fast,
free shipping, pre road hazard protection, over ten thousand recommended
installers tire act dot com. The way tire buying should

(06:45):
be final throws of the first half in air quotes
of the Major League Baseball season. So we've got that
in the offic Jason Cole's going to stop buying about
fifteen minutes our buddy, longtime friend of the show, talking
some NFL headlines as teams start reporting for training camp
this weekend. Chris Blank, how excited are you?

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, I'm a nerd for training camp. And again I'm
not as I don't think I knee jerk, right. I
think sometimes and we see this a lot in the
college world, and we're seeing it a lot in the
NFL world. There'll be one or two highlight clips that
come out out of practice, obviously NFL being more open
with its practices.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
I try not to knee jerk to it, right.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
I see one or two good plays, I'm like, good,
you're an NFL player, you should make that. But I'm
here for seeing it, right, I'm I love the debates
that are starting to make the rounds with I guess
what we can call the hit that is this New
York Giants Hard Knocks this offseason. I know Florio's written
about it, and that's the possibility of like an all
access you know, Hard Knocks is not an all access show.

Speaker 4 (07:47):
It's edited.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
And now there's this thought that maybe the NFL might
be trending towards one hundred percent access at some point,
and if that's the case.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
Count me in.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
I'll pay whatever price there is to pay to watch
it all. Yeah, but let me just stop you there. Though,
if I learned anything from these first couple episodes of
The Giants's how poorly run this organization really is. I
have a vote of no confidence based on what they've
allowed to air in those first couple of episodes, because
they still have edit capabilities, they still have a hey

(08:18):
hell no, right. There's a lot of stories about how
Dable will crank up music on the conversations he wants
kind of whispered and you know, for you to have
to bring in a professional lip reader and all that stuff.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
Like that whole phone call with Saquon Barkley was one
of the cringiest things. Oh my good in my life.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
You're gonna get you promise me, you promise, you promise
you're gonna call please like I equated it to you.
I mean, you've seen a few good men, yes, okay, yeah, wow,
but it's one of those I have to unfortunately in
our in our business. At this point, Chris, I got
to ask that question. Well, we got a lot of
guys that are very I don't watch TV and movies like,

(08:57):
all right, then, good luck to you. But the medium
is about relating through our relationships, our regular lives and
pop culture. That's what we have to do. We give
it a big hunt.

Speaker 5 (09:08):
But remember the courtroom scene where he's looking around going
hell hell, That's kind of what I felt, you know,
Shane was doing there, you know when when he's talking
to Barkley, and I really wish it was a video
call so I could have seen Barkley just do the
you know triple boot with nothing, yes, with no verbide, Giants, you.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Could not be more you know exactly what that face
was that he was making when he got that phone call.
So maybe you're onto something here, Mike Harmen. Maybe my
hope that we'll get that one hundred percent access it's
which I don't think anyone's ever going to get a
hundred percent access, but you know, more than we have
right now. Maybe the Giants realize, hey, this showed how
dumb we are, man, and every single move is getting

(09:52):
over scrutinized like crazy, especially during like these next two weeks.
You bring up camp showing up starting up. Nothing's really
going on. I mean, I'm watching a Summer League game
right now, right I watch Bronnie James play. I love
major League Baseball. But we're in the middle of kind
of a nothing point of the season as we get

(10:12):
to the All Star Game, So everything's gonna get over analyzed.
Everything's going to be talked about more, even as poorly
as maybe the Giants have looked in some instances.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
So maybe you're right, maybe it will.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Have a pushback from actually giving up that kind of access.
But for me, Mike Harmon, I'm fired up to be
able to see teams return, So in my mind, I
can go over the top and some of the thoughts
that I have, only to have them rocked back down
to earth when the season finally gets underway. And what
what are we like fifty seven days away? Well, we
got to open twenty twenty days away from the Texans

(10:46):
and Bears playing ah, from the exhibition. When I get
to see you know, Steve McMichael enshrined in the Hall
of Fame, it's going to be an emotional night, very
very big for me and obviously very emotional in the
city of Chicago. You know, the good thoughts and prayers
for McMichael and his family and caretakers.

Speaker 5 (11:05):
But yeah, just the larger thing. You know where we're
at in the calendary. You mentioned Summer League. That's a
big story.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
In the background. We're getting ready for the Olympics. We'll
talk a little bit of the Euro twenty twenty four
in Copa America. Huge ratings winners for Fox, no question
about it. Like all of these things swirling, and then
when we get back to the heart of it with
the off season, hard knocks and then the Bears are
going to be hard knocks. Look, it's a show that

(11:32):
if I didn't do this for a living, I don't
think I'd walk anywhere near it.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 5 (11:37):
It's kind of like everybody that was doing the lamentation,
oh no, inside the NBA is gonna go away. You
know what, it came from people in our business who
were sad that they were gonna lose their B and
C blocks the next day based on whatever the hell
Charles Barkley said that was the lamentation.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
Fans are like, ach, you know what, it had a
good run. Good for them.

Speaker 5 (11:55):
No, in our business, like, oh man, now we're actually
gonna have to it in our group think and come
up with something that wasn't straight off of what they
had to say, so that at least that's my thought
on it. But it's it's the idea that for the
Giants and Bears, they're two franchise that did everything they
could to skate away from this stuff for the longest time,

(12:16):
and finally it's like, you know, hiding away from jury
duty or whatever else. Eventually you're getting that postcard in
the mail. It's coming.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
What is what are the I'm asking this as I'm
googling it right now. What teams haven't done hard knocks before?
It's good quest, and I don't.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
I don't.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
The Bears haven't had no, no, okay, no, they were
able to successfully skirt it for a very long time.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
By the way.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
Down in San Diego right now they are having the
Anchorman Giant Mascot race, you know where you win like
a pepsi or something.

Speaker 5 (12:46):
Really yeah, it's pretty good. Champ Kin's got a giant
ass cowboy hat on. It's kind of flapping in the breeze.
I kind of dig that. By the way, A couple
of teams there just real quick. The Bears have not
ever done hard knocks.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
The Carolina Panthers have never done it seems like they
would have forced them somewhere along, right at some point
you get shoehorned in there. I think Temper deserves it
just for being Temper Viking Saints. You mentioned the Giants, Okay,
I still can't believe the Eagles didn't do hard knocks.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
Wow huh.

Speaker 3 (13:14):
But so basically, what we're seeing is some teams that
we've been wanting to know a little bit more about
how the sausage is made. We're getting that, the Giants
in the front office, and then on a But you, dude,
and I'm not trying to get over our skis here
in the first segment, but I'm not somebody that's going
to talk you down on Caleb Williams side. I think
the dude's an absolute freaking rock star. I think he's

(13:36):
going to become elite. I think he's going to be
the franchise quarterback the Bears have always wanted and needed,
and I think he's gonna make him must see TV.
So count me in as one of those that I'm with.
You probably wouldn't be watching it if Kayleb Williams wasn't
on it, But I'm in for it, and I can't
wait to see how he I got to come up
with a fancy word here matriculates himself.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
Done.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Yeah, into the locker room and in that relationship with
his teammates, because I think having the Bears on hard
knocks seeing Caleb Williams is gonna be huge.

Speaker 5 (14:03):
Yeah, just real quick. Jalen Johnson, you know, one of
the leaders there. He's been doing the rounds media wise,
just praising Williams, and to a man, at games, they're
very excited about it. I'm a little bummed because it
means a bunch of people are jumping on board the bandwagon.
Scariest thinking that I've been diving, you know, dying with
you know since nineteen eighty five.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
You know, I did have that glorious Rex Grossman year.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
What you never remembered for Devin Hester one of the
plays that gets him to the Hall of Fame and
Prince singing Purple Rain in the rain, Remember Manning wasn't
very good in that soup.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
That was the page that was the halftime Prince show. Yes,
it was, Oh look at us. There you have it.

Speaker 5 (14:41):
So we tie it all together and you know what
we're gonna bring in Jason Cole talk a little more
NFL as we get things started, don't worry. Plenty of
Jalen Brunson talk. I love that I get to do
this with Jason not here.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
Oh gosh, so you know he's just dying that he's
not here tonight to talk about the greatest team move
that we've seen from a star player in a minute.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
It's glorious stuff. But I'm sure on Monday that's what
I'll do for two hours. Tired of feeling alone in

I'm Mike Carmen.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Welcome in, Thanks for being part of the extended family.
All Star Week continues. Our guy Chris blank In at
Plank Show.

Speaker 5 (16:50):
He's gonna make me smarter about college football in about
an hour from now, and he's gonna lay it all
out and show the blueprint for the season ahead as
the well, the rules of engagement have changed all over
the place in college sports, but certainly in college football,
where you literally do need the complete scorecard anymore, Chris
Plank to know who's playing for whom and who's coaching them.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
New world, new world, new new way of determining a champion.
I guess you could say more seats at the table
with a twelve team playoff that we'll see how many
of those seats are still occupied by Big ten and
SEC teams. Yeah, I mean, I listen, Mike, I could
sit here and talk about college football until not only
we're off the air, but through four hours of Bernie
Show that actually Bernie's like got three hours on Friday night,

(17:34):
right through three hours of Bernie Showing beyond.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
But I think it's gonna be that fascinating.

Speaker 3 (17:38):
I think there is that much unknown about Hey, what's
the fight between four and five gonna look like the
fight between seven and eight, you know, to get that
home field playoff game.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
So it's just I'm excited.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
To see what this is gonna look like because I
think it's gonna be awesome from a conference front.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
I think it's gonna be awesome from an expanded playoff
front too.

Speaker 5 (17:56):
Also a year that I would love an end season
hard knock like approach to how teams have to navigate
not only the nil and all of that stuff on
the outside, but just travel all the new conference alignance
right the West Coast teams traveling Midwest East Coast often
for these games, and how they still although I mean

(18:18):
the student athlete monikored like the student goes behind it
now right in a lot of cases. So you know,
we owed that a little bit in terms of the
processes and procedures, but plenty on that coming up in
about an hour. I know you're reving up, so you'll
get another cup of coffee and you'll be ready to
go on that at playing show where you find and
find me over at Swollenome. You hear Chris every week

(18:40):
weekend on Sundays with Arnie Spanier for three hours in
the evenings as they traverse the highways and byways of
the sporting universe. Lots of dolphin talk and Arnie does
that really good growl for his Arizona Wildcats.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
There you go at Stick and Genius one, so you
could tag him in like it's a wrestling promo. By
the way, it was the anniversary of the end WO
formation earlier this week, which way he celebrated on Sunday?
Was it really nineteen ninety six, Yeah, that was on
Sunday when Hulk Hogan famously did the leg drop and
became the official third member of the nWo. Hulk Hogan,

(19:16):
you can go to hell. That's how Tony Shavanni ended
the broadcast of The Age. Tony Shavanni he God, is
he the third man?

Speaker 4 (19:25):
But whose side is he on? What do you mean on?

Speaker 3 (19:28):
You don't even remember the video. Oh, I've watched it
a thousand times. It's kind of funny because you think
about those times in your life and not to reminisce
on a show that you did on Monday. But it's
the weirdest thing because to me, I always remember remember
that happening a little bit later in the ninety like
ninety seven, ninety eight. I don't I don't remember that
happening whenever I was still in college. I feel like

(19:48):
I was out. But it's crazy to think that a
world a moment that changed the wrestling world forever.

Speaker 4 (19:55):
Seems like it wasn't that long ago. But yet you
look not chasing Mike.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
That's twice worked with Jason, by the way, I don't
know why I've done that twice already.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
I don't know, but I don't.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
I don't think it's there's a moment that can ever
top that in the wrestling Well.

Speaker 5 (20:09):
I'll tell you this right because those two days, so
Sunday doing the show with Ryan Hollins, we we did
a little of that on Fox Fox Sports Sunday, and
then Monday was the greatest heel turn not sports entertainment history,
but sports history when Lebron James made his announcement that
he was going to South Beach.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
My talents to South Beach. My favorite memory of that
is house. I don't remember if it was steven A
or who it was. Someone someone had kind of got
wind of what was gonna happen. Oh, I think I
was one that steven A was. Uh should have been
peacocking on a lot. He didn't get nearly the run
he should have. He's got a lot more run for
stuff that makes no sense whatever else that what he

(20:54):
got right I'll never forget they realized, Oh, Cleveland fans
are gonna freak out of this. And I don't know
if it was like wilful, wilful ignorance of what was
going to take place, Mike, or if it was just
they had no idea how Jersey Burning esque it would be.

Speaker 4 (21:11):
And I was I was an ugly night in Cleveland. Man.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
There was a lot of people that thought that he
was going to be committed to the land or what
who was was was New.

Speaker 4 (21:19):
York inet on that one too, was that the final
three in theory, you had New York.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
There were whispers of Chicago for a little that's right,
the bulls were.

Speaker 5 (21:27):
So there was a little bit of all of that.
But then he ultimately decided. And that was always my
problem with it. I didn't know about how you did it,
what you did whatever. It's like, not realizing that you
just changed the NBA forever. Yeah, and that people probably
weren't gonna like that Cleveland obviously, but NBA is all going, oh, wait, now,
our guys might do this too, And and to a

(21:49):
degree they did, right, And it already had happened to
a lesser extent within the older version of the Celtics
in a wait. But then Wednesday, we commemorated the anniversary
of the baby when Lebron returned to Cleveland. See all
my life's a circle, just like Harry Chapins saying, all
those years ago.

Speaker 4 (22:07):
Look at you bringing it all back together.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
That's what Also funny that news broke whenever I got
my viseectomy. How about that? Yeah, so that's so How
long was that? Whenever Lebron went back to Cleveland. That's
the celebration of my life. That's a decade ago. Good o,
ten years look at me. But you know it's funny, Mike,
because did you get anything for it? I got longer
pain than I expected. Way, it's no good man. So

(22:30):
it was the last time I went to media days
screwed me up. I remember calling the doctor and he's like,
how long did you get this done?

Speaker 4 (22:38):
I told him, He's like, ah, You're fine. That was it.
I never talked about doctor again.

Speaker 3 (22:42):
Yeah, but think about that, all of those commercials during
the NCAA tournament, they lied to you make that fast man,
so full of it, so full of it. But it's
funny because the Lebron thing does bring up an interesting
conversation that's timely here tonight with Jalen Brunson and what
he's done contract wise and seeing I don't know, maybe

(23:02):
less than a true big three developing. Everyone always says
you need to have three, but we saw Paul George
leave the Sixers and our leave for the Sixers, and
I mean, I guess you could say a big three there.
Now we'll see how it works, but is it a
way that will continue to be emulated?

Speaker 4 (23:19):
You thank you.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
Well, but but it goes back. You know what have
we talked about forever in the sporting universe?

Speaker 4 (23:24):
Right? Lebron did that? What did they do?

Speaker 5 (23:26):
They had to take less money to make that work?
That's right, right, it's under the old rules. Now you
had these second aprons. I had our guy Shay executive
producer and I thanks Shay. You put my name on
there too. That was great tonight on the rundown. I
really do appreciate that. Did he get it right or
did he call you Jason like I have to? Well,
he just put the well two and a half times
for you. He just put yesterday. I like how he

(23:47):
keeps tabs of him too. There was a halftime you
started with look.

Speaker 3 (23:49):
Forever, forever, ago I would do radio hits and I
wouldn't be Mike. I was Mark because of that Damn
ncis show Mark harm and the former UCLA Cord exactly.

Speaker 4 (24:01):
I see. So I've been scared forever. They understood. So
I just went by Harmon everywhere I could.

Speaker 3 (24:06):
I also did that, you know, Catholic school days with
a bunch of Mikes running around.

Speaker 4 (24:11):
But he just left me off. It just said to
Jason Smith show.

Speaker 7 (24:14):
I went all caps today though all cats.

Speaker 3 (24:17):
It is all cats. I think it was a little
passive aggressive to say, all right, b like you like that.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
I appreciate that we got Alex Ticher on the ones
and twos as well, as well as Bobo making a special.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
Appearance with us here in the studio. Like ever, what flight?
Check it out? It's Bobo? What's up? Bobo was going
on plank. Are we buying Brownie James Jerseys after what
we saw tonight? Or no? No, Bobo just he's just
shaking his head. He just walked away. Can you hear me?

Speaker 7 (24:48):
Yeah, I'm used. I'm not used to board.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
It is.

Speaker 5 (24:51):
It is a new studio and board. But Bobo works
in another part of the building.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
Now.

Speaker 7 (24:56):
Yeah, they moved me up to with the big boy shows.

Speaker 4 (24:58):
Yeah wow, he looks now. Love you Harmon, No, that
that was really kind of hateful and joy Harmon.

Speaker 7 (25:04):
We've been We started here around the same time you.

Speaker 4 (25:06):
And I have been here forever.

Speaker 5 (25:08):
Really, once upon a time I was going to be
the weekend overnight host and celebrating one of our guys
is getting the job, and it was going to be
me and Bobo and Coop. And then I did that
for two shows before I started working with Jason Smith.

Speaker 3 (25:21):
Wait Fantas, Let's go, and then we did the Fantasy
Freaks on Sunday mornings. If you did, you did the
overnight show.

Speaker 5 (25:27):
So I got the overnight show on the weekend for
one one weekend.

Speaker 4 (25:31):
What what year was this?

Speaker 7 (25:33):
Twelve years ago?

Speaker 4 (25:34):
Oh wow?

Speaker 3 (25:35):
Okay, well it was before I got No, it would
have been ten years because I've been with Jason, not
ten years.

Speaker 7 (25:40):
So was Yeah, so it was about twelve years ago.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
Yes, yeah, yeah, that's what I said the first time.
Twenty fourteen. Yeah, no, yeah, it was twenty fourteen. Yeah wow.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
So so I was on vacation get this because I
knew I'd gotten when that Ben was going to move
to the weeknight like, you know, went and had a
talk with the boss like, what are you planning to do?
You know, I'm looking to expand I'd love to improve
my footprint, you know, these guys use me on the
Algie shows whatever. And I said, well, what are you

(26:13):
doing on that st and he goes, hmm, let.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
Me think about it.

Speaker 5 (26:16):
And he calls me Bruce Gilbert and he he goes, well,
I'm on vacation.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
I'm down in Florida visiting my folks. And it's like, hey,
the weekend overnight, Why why don't we do that?

Speaker 2 (26:27):
Cool?

Speaker 5 (26:27):
And and here's going to be your team and we're
all excited because again not an outside whatever. And it's like, hey, cool,
you know you grinded all these extra hours where you
didn't get paid, hanging out and doing contact with Pat
O'Brien and all those guys like you.

Speaker 4 (26:43):
Get old beat.

Speaker 5 (26:43):
Yeah, so now you get a shot.

Speaker 4 (26:47):
And literally I get.

Speaker 3 (26:49):
A call back going, hey, what do you think about
you know, Jason Smith, we're thinking about you. And I'm like, okay,
So we talked to Jason and then I come out
of Anchorman two, my then wife and I and uh,
there's a.

Speaker 5 (27:05):
Voicemail from Bruce Gilbert. What do you think about this?
Like all right, and there you go. So I did
one weekend as the weekend overnight guy. There was a
crazy NFL playoff game that ended up in a crazy comeback.
So callers were insane and off the hook with the.

Speaker 4 (27:21):
The worst miserable experience. It was the greatest.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
I mean, it just went so fast, So like, all right,
what's your painful experience?

Speaker 5 (27:29):
We dumped a couple of guys. I mean, look, it
was great, and then it's like, all right on Monday. Well,
see it's me and Smith and here we are ten
years later.

Speaker 4 (27:37):
One hit wonder or one weekend wonder. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:41):
I look, eventually, you know, all roads lead back to
me yelling at people in the overnight is what I'm figuring. My, my,
we have to we have the same roots. Then, Mike,
you know that's why I started too. Of course I'm
an old man. It goes back to I think I
think it was the first time the ben shifted from
weekends to weekday over nights, when George Sadano went over

(28:02):
there you go ESPN. Yeah, and I did that for
a really long time. It was a lot of dump
phone calls my car. I man a lot of dump
phone calls. Why I I have a love hate relationship
with the whole phone call world in our sports media.

Speaker 7 (28:17):
Not as crazy for me. I started at Fox doing
overnight shifts and the first show that I worked on
was Ben Maller. And here's the crazy part. Guess who
the producer was at the time.

Speaker 4 (28:28):
Oh, I could probably gets take against was it? I
don't know?

Speaker 7 (28:35):
Jonas Knox it Jonas Jonas was the producer.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
Yeah, Jonas worked his way from the producer to the
update guy and now he's a rock stars.

Speaker 4 (28:43):
And now we got history of Fox Sports Radio. Follow
your dreams. You can't reach your goals. Somehow I got
it hot.

Speaker 7 (28:49):
Unless you're me than you're in the same position.

Speaker 5 (28:53):
Somehow, somehow, I now have to tie it and tie
this back next to Jalen Brunson.

Speaker 4 (28:58):
How do I do it? Well?

Speaker 5 (29:00):
Take less to do the job you love, knowing that
it benefits you to work with people you like.

Speaker 4 (29:06):
How's that that? That's a good teaser?

Speaker 3 (29:08):
There?

Speaker 4 (29:08):
I go, all right, Nick show, he's playing.

Speaker 5 (29:11):

Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with
Me Mike Harmon. Chris Plank is in for Jason Smith tonight.
Tweet that I have to read Plank yes from JP Hunkle.

Speaker 4 (30:33):
So let me get this straight.

Speaker 5 (30:35):
On a night when Swollen Dome and Plank show or
on the radio together without their usual partners, who never
stopped talking about the Knicks, what do they talk about
the Knicks?

Speaker 4 (30:47):
The Knicks pretty story. It's kind of a big story.

Speaker 5 (30:51):
I mean, it's a bit of guy on, you know,
the mid mid level exception or something. I would have
just kind of shrugged, said, hey, that's a nice note
for Steve, and then we would.

Speaker 4 (30:59):
Have moved on. It's Jalen Brunson. Brunton's kind of a
big deal.

Speaker 5 (31:04):
Actually, a player that I hate is on the Knicks
because he's a I hate. I actually hate the entire
thing about the Knicks because they are everything I love
about basketball. Played that way and I always liked Thibodeaux
except I was always afraid guys were gonna break in
the seventieth game of a season.

Speaker 4 (31:21):
But now their knicks You mean like they did this
past year. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (31:25):
Well no, it's same old story, same old story. I like,
coach him up, play defense hard forty eight. You know,
the Nolan Richardson forty minutes of hell kind of thing
come to the NBA. And I watched it with Thibodau
and the Bulls. We watched it when he was in Minnesota.
I mean, it is who he is. It's like Dusty Baker.
If he got hold of your pitching rotation, you were screwed.

(31:45):
You knew those guys weren't gonna survive very long without
some arm troubles based on the way he ran them out.

Speaker 4 (31:52):
Great career for Dusty Baker. Well you checkout history there.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
I was reminded by somebody today that every time I
would talk about Dusty Baker for some reason, I would
call him Dusty Rhodes. So let's good time. We'll be
talking about hard times and Polkadots. But it's kind of
wild when you think about the Jalen Brunson career arc
right from a guy that won a national championship in college,
and I guess there weren't supposed to be any NBA

(32:16):
ready guys on that Villanova team that won a title
to being a second round pick to I mean, I
don't know. You can say that Dallas chose Luca over him,
and that's fine, but it was also you know, they
he wanted to go somewhere else, Well.

Speaker 4 (32:32):
It went where his dad worked him exactly.

Speaker 5 (32:34):
There's that agency and executives like, there's a lot there.
There's no question because you know, nepotism has come up
quite a bit. We'll talk about that. We'll push this
other story to you know, nine minutes from now in
terms of all of that talk, because because already, did
you know, in one of his little zags on me
on Monday, just kept pointing out he goes, you know,

(32:56):
Plake loves the Brownnie James.

Speaker 4 (33:02):
So we'll get into that in a few minutes.

Speaker 5 (33:03):
But for Brunson, yeah, he was a guy that there
was a lot of reason to go to New York
and obviously the Mavericks, whatever the communications were, and you
always take everything, you know, his side, the other side,
and what's true. Right somewhere in between we get into
whether contract talks really got serious, or they were dismissed,

(33:24):
or phone calls not returned, or someone was conveniently on vacation,
or whatever the case may be. But he goes to
the Knicks and now they build this way, and they
did it without Julius Randall from much of the season.

Speaker 4 (33:37):
Hartenstein was fantastic. But off he goes.

Speaker 5 (33:40):
So now you try to figure out what the next
iteration is, and in theory, the Eastern Conference will.

Speaker 4 (33:46):
Get better around them.

Speaker 3 (33:47):
Yeah, right, because they got the benefit of Doc Rivers
showing up in Milwaukee, because you saw how that worked. Yeah,
it's gonna make things better for you quite a bit.
I'll just in a conclusion, at least from my perspective
for JP, who is up a great point about how
here we are finally getting to.

Speaker 4 (34:03):
Hang and we have a big Nix story that drops
in our lap. I just think he's a cool guy.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
I know that's not the most professional analysis that you're
gonna get, but to see the path, to understand the why,
and then to see this type of decision, it's so
unique in our sports world today, and to do it
in the name of winning, I think is one of
the coolest things that we've seen. So I mean, I
hope it doesn't work, but I unfortunately think it's one
of the coolest things that we've seen in the NBA

(34:31):
in a while. Yeah it works only so well, right,
be good enough until well, I mean then they rip
your heart out and show it. Yeah, all right, it's
the old Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Speaker 5 (34:44):
KLi yeah, klie ma. The drums are beating, and well
there's that guy.

Speaker 4 (34:49):
Don't want to be that guy.

Speaker 5 (34:50):
No, you don't want to be that guy. But it's
just that kind of idea for me, you know, because
I'm waiting. Jet season is rapidly approaching and Smith is
getting all excitable, like still Aaron Rodgers, Hey, he's gotta
stay stay upright, b You know, I've long been the
guy saying let me see him when it counts that
one super Bowl long long time ago. Take don't can't

(35:14):
take it away from him. But it's a long long
time ago. So uh, well, we'll see how that flows,
you know, to kind of tie those all together. But
but for the Brunson deal, it really does bring out,
to my thinking, some of the worst uh in terms
of the analysis, because it immediately becomes you know, this
player stupid.

Speaker 4 (35:34):
How dare you right?

Speaker 3 (35:35):
You know? Short the market again, it's not gonna affect
the money from anybody else. No, it's gonna be the
you go in and you're gonna ask your client, Hey,
you know we could do this and make these moves
if you'll leave this money on the table and percent
of guys are gonna see I'll see you in hell.
Right those extra zeros, Now I want my cash. Okay,

(36:00):
but that's just it, right, And anybody deferred payment, you
do it if you can.

Speaker 5 (36:05):
But let's face it, the life of a professional athlete.
You recognize that the uh that that sand in the
hourglass runs out pretty fast. Preach, preach, Chris Blake. I'm
Mike Carmen here, Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next. Yeah,
we take a look at Summer League
