This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
What a very specific intro for rich Hartberg? Yeah, did
you just hear that? And six year NFL VET sixty
four games played? Is pench invested in his middle of
his third year?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Not just for.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
NFL star for NA played? But no, no, no, six
years in the NFL. It's rich Orenberger. Thank you, thank you,
thank you.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
I'm good, I'm good.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
How you doing, Jason, dude, I'm grabbed just back vacation, man,
I'm still on England and Scotland time, trying to sleep
later than like eight o'clock in the morning, which is
very difficult.

Speaker 5 (01:07):
Well, you and Harmon both you've been exchanging time in Europe,
So what was your experience. I got a little download
from him about his experience in Ireland.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
What was Where do your travels bring you?

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I went, I went to England for a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
I was in London for a little bit for four
five days in London, and then went to Scotland and
it was Scotland for the next four or five days.
It was a very big Harry Potter trip, because that's
huge in my house, my wife, my daughter.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
So we went.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
We saw Curse Child in the West End. We went
and visited so many places where they shot the movies.
And we went to the Scottish Highlands and saw some
of the big play where Dumbledore's gravest sorry spoiler, uh
the island they had there, I mean it was it
was a really we did. We did a bunch of
other stuff too, but but that was the main gist
was doing all the Harry Potter stuff and it was

(01:55):
just outstanding.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
That's very cool. The Curse Child is being promoted heavy.

Speaker 5 (02:00):
I am actually technically on vacation.

Speaker 4 (02:03):
As we speak.

Speaker 5 (02:04):
I'm on the East Coast, I mean Connecticut, visiting family.
We landed in New York, though we spent a day
meandering around the city before we made our way up
north to Connecticut, and yeah, Harry Potter was all over
JFCA Airport because that's the new Broadway play, yep, and
the kid wanted.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
To see it.

Speaker 5 (02:23):
My oldest is very much so into Harry Potter too,
so maybe at some point I'm gonna have to go
over to foggy London down and do the whole see
the sites, do Dumbledore's grave, do the whole thing, because
he's very much so into it.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Dude. It was I can't tell you what it was like,
seeing something like seeing the actual Hogwarts Express coming over
the part of the mound.

Speaker 6 (02:45):
It was.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
It was outstanding.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
I can't even tell But you know, my absolute best
part of the vacation was I've been saving this, saving
this because now we have the Open Championship coming up
coming up tomorrow. We're actually gonna start later on tonight.
We'll be on the air where the Open Championship starts
from Royal True. So we go to Scotland and you know,
my wife plans the trip. We're gonna go here, and
I'm like, yeah, that's great, that's great. And we go
to check into the hotel in Scotland and we're staying

(03:08):
in Dundee and the guy says, and he sees me
and I'm wearing my Mets hat and he could tell
him a sports He goes, ah, sports fan, huh and
I said yeah. He goes, are you going to Saint
Andrews while you're here? And I said, well, no, he
didn't plan. I mean, I mean, I don't Saint Andrews.
He goes, Mike, it's it's twenty minutes up the road.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
I said, what you go? They just go over the bridge.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
I asked, because if you go over the bridge, the
bridge is closed tomorrow for like an hour and a
half and then you can go over the bridge.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
You're right there.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
I said, wait, how far are we from Saint Andrews
And he says about twenty minutes.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
So I look at my.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Wife and I go, did you know this?

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Were you good keeping this front me that I get
a chance to go see royal and ancient I could
walk on Saint Andrews. She goes, no, I didn't know.
So we went to Saint Andrews and it was majestic.
And you see the you walk right off a cobblestone
street and onto the first tee. It's it's amazing, right,
it's I mean as soon as I walk on the tee,
I could see Sefe Biasteros, I could see Norman, I

(03:57):
could see Tiger and all the legends of the past.
It was just it was so really heavy. But my
favorite part, because you know me, my Twitter handles. How
about a Fresco caddy Shack's my favorite movie. I just
happened to be walking in the parking lot, which is
very tiny, and I walk by and I see a
sign that says reserve for the Captain. And I'm like,
there's a real captain of the Lynks of Saint Andrews,

(04:17):
the guy that gave Ted Knight the jacket. You do
well to know, Lacy, the Captain of the Lynx of
Saint Andrews gave me this jacket. I'm like, is the
captain here, and they said no, he went home about
an hour ago, and go ah. I wanted to get
a picture with the Captain of the Lynx of Saint Andrews.
So I settled for taking a picture of his parking
spot because it says reserved for the Captain.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
So I took a picture of that. I'm like, I
can't believe it.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
I was starstruck just seeing the parking spot for the
Captain of the Lynx of Saint Andrews, which is a
real thing, real guy who actually exists.

Speaker 5 (04:45):
So, my beautiful wife Annie and her family, they've worked
in the golf business forever and they have to go.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Out to you know, the.

Speaker 5 (04:56):
Open Championship, the Masters, the PGA, They're out all the
the tour events.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
It's just a part of the family business.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
And so my wife, for a long time, before we
had kids, she was working in golf and she would
go to all these events and she'd be like, yeah,
you know, blah blah blah, and then this happened, and
this happened.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
I'm like, so, what about the golf?

Speaker 4 (05:14):
And she was like, yeah, no, no, no, never mind the golf.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
She was like, so the flight got delayed in the
hotel room in this I'm like.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah, yeah, but what about the golf. And she's like, oh, please,
enough with the golf, she was like.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
And then the hotel didn't even have like a gym
or what.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
I'm like, wait a second, what about the golf.

Speaker 7 (05:31):
She she worked in golf, she didn't watch golf, and
so it was all lost on her. My goodness for
years that I've been begging, I'm like, oh, could you
please just sneak me in the luggage at Augusta. I mean,
I mean, honestly, honestly, what you just did taking the
picture next to the parking spot.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
I would saw a leg, off, I would saw a leg.
It's unbelievable. But yeah, for some you and I I mean,
it's everything. And then for men it's like, who cares
about the captain?

Speaker 8 (06:03):
No?

Speaker 4 (06:03):
No, no, that you don't understand.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
The captain is everything.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Hey, that red jacket, the Ted nightmore in the entire movie, Like,
that's the captain of the Lynx. So like, so your
wife comes home and says, oh, yeah, the golf was good.
The guy they call the lion one the like you
mean Tiger, Yes, Tiger, sorry, Tiger yes one?

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Yeah, that guy won? Yeah right, yeah, nice guy. Talk
to him for what did he say?

Speaker 9 (06:22):
Ah?

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Who can remember? What are you talking about? This is
lost on you. Why am I not doing this? It's
lost on you? And that was all the thing. My
family is.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
There, they all know about My wife has been living
with Caddyshack with me for you know, twenty five years now,
So she I go, it's the captain of the Lynx
of Saint Andrew. She goes, oh boy, I'm gonna give
you a minute. And so my wife and daughter just
go to the side, and I'm just walking around like
an idiot on the on the you know, on the
first tea of Sandy. I'm going, I'm walking on the
first tea of Saint Andrew's. I'm walking on the old course.

(06:52):
These shoes are walking on the old course. And I'm
just be by myself, and I'm like, i gotta call somebody.
So I call my dad, not realizing my dad is
fast asleep. Oh Dad gets where I am.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
You're on a case.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
Wait, what's going on?

Speaker 3 (07:05):
You're vacation, Dad, I'm at St. Andrews. He goes, wow,
can you call me later?

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Sure?

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Dad, Yeah, I'll I'll call you later.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
I know, but it was I I hate to admit this.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
I hate to if I ever find my way at
Saint Andrews.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
I swear, I swear this is what my plan is.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
And I don't even know if it's legal, if it
if it is illegal, I don't want anybody to tell
me because I'm doing it anyways. I'm going to take maybe,
like you know, maybe a three inch by three inch square,
a chunk of the turf out of the course, and
I'm bringing it home and I'm going to foster it,
and I'm going to grow it and I'm going to

(07:45):
create it. So it is my entire backyard. So I
can say to everybody who I invite over, do you
see this? Do you see this lawn that I've created
in the backyard. This is the same grass they use
at the old course. This is this is Saint Andrew's grass.
This is it, this is the ancient royal this is
the stuff. And they're gonna ask me how did you
get it here? And I'm gonna have to I'm gonna

(08:06):
have to lie. But yeah, the truth is I'm a smuggler.
I'm a smuggler of grass across international boundaries.

Speaker 4 (08:13):
And we're not even talking about the good kind of grass.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
We're talking about just grass, because that's how much I
care about that course.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
See now I feel in fear. I feel like I
should have had that idea. I guess you would have.
I can't believe that I should have called you, Hey,
Rich gets ramp, dude, get some grass.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
What do you mean I'm not doing that? No, no, no,
grab some grass, throw it in. I'll pay you for it.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Just bring it back, make sure it's okay, put it
on dry ice, whatever it has to be.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Bring it, fencing it out of the grass.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
We need grass, we need it. We did it the
words way.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
I mean, I'm saying, Okay, this is amazing. And here's
the cherry on top of the Sunday right. So it's
like I said, it's so accessible. You walk right on there.
It's a twenty second walk walk from the first te
you go over this tiny little cobblestone road because that
that's off the edge of the of the tea box.
And there's a beach that is right next to the
that you see in wide shots all the time. When

(09:01):
when you see st Andrews off the first team and
you can be on this beach in twenty seconds. It's
the beach they shot the opening and closing scene for
Chariots of Fire on when when they're all running on
the beach of Best Picture eighty one, when they're all
running on the beach, the running team and they're playing
the big Chariots of Fire song, I'm like, this is
the Chariots of Fire beach. I'm like, come on, let's go,
let's recreate this. My wife says, you need to take

(09:23):
a step back, you need to calm down.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
For a second.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
No, let's just we'll be running like it's to see.
They're all running on the beach and they're playing the song.
And my daughter does all kinds of stuff. She puts
videos up on Instagram and everything else. Go Zoe, you'll
edit it and put the music on. It will be
running and laughing like they are in the beginning. She goes,
you just need to take a step back for a second. Okay,
let's get some pictures. But we're not doing that.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
I'm like, oh wow, okay, so.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
Now I just realized I don't just need grass, I
need sand. So you just increase the amount of a
tonnage basically my luggage coming back from the old course.
So I'm gonna need an extra carry on or too.
This is gonna become a very expensive trip. I'm so
glad you enjoyed it, because, like, honestly, when you're in

(10:06):
golf Heaven, the Open Championship, the British Open, whatever you
refer to it as, those are hallowed grounds. Those are
important to sports fans, those are important to golfers. Once
you get involved in the sport and My entrance to
the sport was Tiger So I'm hanging on for dear life.
I'm just praying he keeps playing in majors because he's

(10:26):
the reason why I got involved or invested or interested
in golf in the first place. I love the storyline
that was his life intertwined with the sport of golf.
Obviously those two things, those were blurred lines for a
long time. But I'm excited. I'm excited for every major
because any major that he's participating in has my interest

(10:50):
and it will until he considers it done.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
And I don't know when that date is going.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
To be, but I think everybody has to observe with
some level of solace and maybe some somberness, that we're
getting close to the end of his of his time
as an active PGA tour golfer. I don't know when
he's gonna call it quits for good, but we're getting close.

Speaker 9 (11:11):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
And then the funny thing is all those coaching points
you were making about Tiger Woods, and I'm just thinking
rich Orenberger was facing four felonies for stealing from Royal
and Ancient and the beach next to it, trying to
illegally smuggle sand and grass into the United States. Richie
rich You're gonna be in a gulag. It's gonna be
impossible to get you out. It's gonna be a movie,
like Daniel d. Lewis will play you in a movie.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Allow, we gotta get him out. We gotta get rich out.
He's gotta get back out of the air and talk.
He tried to take grass. What grass?

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Oh, there was this big misunderstanding and people thought it
was drugs and it was just actual grass.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
And now here's rich Out.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
They play a triumphant music for you at the end
as you go out and you get the free air
for the first.

Speaker 10 (11:49):
Time, and gosh, jarroot's a fire playing at flipping off
the guards on your way out. Yeah, got my stuff,
got the grass, got the but yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
But we're gonna have live Uh, We're gonna have live

I didn't know you're on vacation. Yeah, I said, this.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
Is really something or he's got to get away from
his family. You're filling in tonight, Dan coming in. I
mean that's awesome, dude, Thank you so much.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
I am thrilled to be here with you. There are
very few shows.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
That I would I would cut out time from the
vacation and sleep, but this is one of those shows.
I enjoy it every single time. I'll never say no
as long as I can, I'll never say no.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
Okay, all right now, because now we got to hold
you to that.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Any anytime we call you, hey, Rich said he would
say yes. He said he would say yes. He promises
his children, Both.

Speaker 5 (15:12):
Of his children get married on the same day, and
I'm just gonna find a way to fill in.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
How is it possible he's also performing the ceremony and
it's during the show, and he's going to do the show.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
It's gonna be amazing.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
But we got Jason lock and for coming up in
a couple of minutes NFL Insider and look, hey, you know, look,
I don't I don't create the stories, but I will
react to them. And it sure seems like rich There's
a lot of people in the media that want Davonte
Adams to be a New York Jet And hey, you
know me, man, mister Jet, I'm okay with that. I
feel like there's a lot of smoke with this story,
whether it's it's it's Dan Orlovskiy, whether it's Boomrisaiasna Deavante

(15:47):
Adams and the Jets. He talked about it today and said,
if I was ever gonna team up with anybody, it
would be Aaron Rodgers. Again, I kind of feel like
Davanta Adams and the Jets is sort of a fade
a complete.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
I don't know that.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
I don't know it's gonna happen soon, but by the deadline,
the Raiders wind up because they can't go into the
season and say, hey, all right, we're gonna deal Tovontanna's
before we start. You're gonna you're gonna hamstring them, and
all of a sudden, Antonio Piers is gonna be without
his best player.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
And what kind of message does that send.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
But as a season goes and the Raiders look they're
clearly gonna rebuild mode, they start losing. Absolutely, I think
the Jets are gonna wind up getting at them, tore
the deadline.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
Yeah, the Raiders know exactly where they are. The Jets
also know where they are.

Speaker 5 (16:26):
So the Raiders are at the bottom trying to build
toward the top, and the Jets their window is open
for legitimately, oh just a.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
Few more hours. Like so you have to make a move.

Speaker 5 (16:38):
When or strike, I should say when the iron's the hottest.
And I agree with you. I don't think this is
gonna be an offseason move. I think to maximize the
value of the trade. It's gonna be something. I don't
know if it's week four, if it's week five, it's
if it's week eight, but it's gonna be somewhere closer
to the deadline where clearly the arrow is pointing up
for one franchise and pointing down for the other. I

(17:01):
think the Jets are going to have a good year,
and I'm not placating you. I've been saying this to
anybody who will listen to me, and a lot of
people disagree. They don't believe in Aaron Rodgers, they don't
believe in Robert sala, they don't believe in the Jets.
Whatever it is. Look, I see things every single year.
Twenty twenty four is not twenty twenty three, is not
twenty twenty two. Every year is a complete restart. And

(17:25):
we've seen this so many times in the NFL. Teams
at the bottom of a division can rise to the top.
Teams that are left for dead can all of a
sudden have double digit wins. That's how it works in
this league. The Jets are no different. And I think
that this is assuming health at the most important position,
the quarterback position, this could be.

Speaker 4 (17:44):
A very, very fortunate year for Jets fans.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
And here's the thing, though, because I'm with you, the
Jets have a top three roster in the NFL. And look,
I'm not a big Robert Solofan, I'm a big eight
is going to cover up all the eels we have
as long as he's on the field. But I don't
know how much am I really going to be to
enjoy stuff where every play I'm gonna say, get up,
get up, get up, you're fired.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
Okay, you're good.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Even on plays where he hands off, Hey, he wasn't
limping after that handoff, Why does he get up?

Speaker 4 (18:08):
You're okay?

Speaker 1 (18:09):
Right here? He like every single play, I'm gonna be like,
you're okay, right, You're okay right. That's a difficult needle
to thread for an entire season, Rich Well.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
But it's every single team. Think about it. Joe Burrow
has an injury history.

Speaker 5 (18:22):
Now, the years that he's healthy, they go to the
AFC Championship Game or the Super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (18:26):
The years he's unhealthy, the Bengals stink.

Speaker 5 (18:29):
The same is true for any team with any starting quarterback.
You gotta keep the guy healthy. The guy is the guy.

Speaker 4 (18:37):
Who's taking the snaps from center.

Speaker 5 (18:39):
The guy is the guy who's throwing the football to
the fast guys, you know, the ones who run down
the sideline.

Speaker 4 (18:43):
Like Devonte Adams. If you keep that guy healthy, you.

Speaker 5 (18:48):
Have a very good chance of having a successful season.
If that guy is good at his job. Aaron Rodgers
happens to be great at his job. He's a four
time NFL MVP. So I believe in experience, I believe
in talent. Aaron Rodgers has both, and unless his health
is a serious question mark, still I'm going to believe

(19:10):
that the Jets are going to have a good team
around Aaron Rodgers because if you look at the offensive
weapons he has, they're incredible.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
If you look at the defense that's all hemmed up.
And again, for.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
Whatever you say about Robert Sala as a head coach,
all great head coaches, you.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Know what they have in common, for the most part,
great quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (19:30):
Robert Sala hasn't had a great quarterback and he's still
been able to navigate keeping his job. So it tells
you the faith that this organization has in him and
maybe even Aaron Rodgers has in him as a head coach.
So I'm very interested to see how this season goes.
And I'm with you, there's gonna be a lot of
pearl clutching every time Aaron Rodgers takes a hard hit

(19:51):
from a defender, and there's going to be a lot
of you know, gasps every time he rolls around, but
you hang in there because every other team is.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
Going through fan base. He's going throughout that at the
same time.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
Well, joining us now in the hotline to break it
down further. Longtime NFL insider Odyssey Washington Post one oh
five seven, the fan in Baltimore. He's on Twitter at
Jason lock and Ford. Jay. What's happening, Bud? How are you?

Speaker 9 (20:16):
What's going on? Hey? Bear Halter's out, man, So some
some good stuff happened since we left. Exactly got that
fool out of my life. So that was a positive.
Now the Oriols go get Derek scooball and we'll be
rocking and rolling.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
Dude, Hey, hey, I was in London. You think we
hated Burrhalter? Here? Southgate had them going to the finals
of the euro and nobody liked them. They all wanted
them out right. I mean, you think we don't like Burt?
You going, hey, you're actually doing stuff in London. It's like, yeah, no,
we got to have him out. We we can't have
this guy.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
He's got to go.

Speaker 9 (20:46):
Well they got there with all right.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
So we were talking about the Davante Adams situation. You
had his agents say Hey, trades call, trade talk speculation
is baseless. You've had some reports in the media the
last couple of days. Hey, he could be on the move.
He was at actually asked today about him. Said, if
I team up with anybody, it's going to be Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 9 (21:04):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Are we going to see Davante Adams with the Jets
at some point, whether it's the summer or later on
in the season.

Speaker 9 (21:11):
Uh. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. I
do think he could be traded, certainly. I mean anybody
could be traded. Rave Ruth was traded, Wayne Gretzky was traded.
But I don't think that Mark Davis is there now
and by the time he gets there. Personally, I don't

(21:32):
think the Jets. I think Jets will be selling, not
buy it. So I don't know that the time frames
are going to match the way that DeVante Adams and
Aaron Rodgers would would want them to.

Speaker 4 (21:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (21:45):
I have a hard time seeing it happen anytime in
the in the uh short term. And then again, if
if if we're in mid October and the Raiders are
rudderless and they can get a haul for Davante Adams,
then sure but I don't Again, I don't know if
the Jets are going to be in a position where, yeah,

(22:07):
you know, adding another wide receiver is going to you know,
fix this thing. Again, I tend to think by the
middle of the season, the coach is going to be
is going to know that he's walking the plank and
there's gonna be a lot of people trying to cover
their own ass and it's going to be a typical
Woody Johnson operation. So yeah, but we'll see, I mean,

(22:28):
we'll we'll we'll see.

Speaker 4 (22:31):
We will definitely see.

Speaker 5 (22:33):
Staying on the thought of wide receivers and movement in
the NFL, Brandon Ayuk, what team is he going to
be playing for Week one of the NFL.

Speaker 1 (22:43):
Season with one?

Speaker 9 (22:49):
How about we one he's playing for nobody? Because maybe
he is fucking enough to take this to the limit
a little bit. And I get it. In this CBA,
things get pretty and for guys to skip out, But
this might be one that has to bleed into the
regular season. To get a forty nine ers front office
that can be pretty stuck in, that can be pretty stubborn,

(23:12):
that isn't a whole lot of fun for a lot
of people to negotiate over the years. That might be
what it takes to get their attention and then reach
the point that we saw the Bills get to with
Digs right, and we've seen the Chiefs get to with
Tyreek Kill and like that, that that point where it's
addition bus attraction and you know what, this just the

(23:32):
fight isn't worth it anymore. The discord, the the inability
to come to terms here, like it's not going to happen.
It's not the work, and so let's do what we
can and move on. Maybe he breaks before that. I
don't think they're getting a deal done. I just did that.

(23:52):
Unless he caves, I don't think they're gonna cave. I
think they like being the bully. I think they'll be
the bully to a point again. If he called their
bluff and now we're in the season and it looks
like he's willing to sit out at least a decent
portion of it, and then they may just for cohesion,
for chemistry and just for the sake of the good
of their team, they might need to move on. And

(24:15):
when they reached that point, if they reached that point,
you know, I think Pittsburgh, I think Washington are two
teams that would make a lot of sense that he'd
be comfortable going to. The Steelers are going to get
another receiver, whether it's him, whether it's that DeVante Adams
scenario down the road, whether it's something else. I know

(24:36):
that they've sort of budged in in a way that
they feel like they can execute one more big swing there.
But yeah, those are some of the teams I'd be
looking at.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
But when it gets to it a point with a
star what he wants to be traded, sometimes it gets
so acrimonious you don't get your preferred destination. Obviously, the
Steelers would be a preferred destination. I think the Bills
are going to wind up getting in it once before
it's said and done. Does the you say preferred destination
to you or is it going to be, hey, you're
going to go play wherever the hell we trade you to.

Speaker 9 (25:05):
Well, I mean the reality is preferred or not. Like
there's been common this is the teams are surprised they
didn't trade him at the draft. I mean they are,
and they aren't. They are because common sense would say,
you've got this situation with these two receivers, and at
that point you're about to draft his replacement, or if

(25:26):
for two day three of the draft you've drafted his replacement,
and what are we doing here? You're not going to
get the value you wanted, but you can still get
good values. So there's not like these conversations haven't gone
on and they don't already have a sense of who
you know, who's in and how much they've been willing
to go at various times, Like this situation has been

(25:47):
fermenting right for for quite some time. So I don't
even know if it's so much about accommodating him or
or that part of it. And yes, it would get personal,
This wouldn't just be business. But I just think certain
teams are going to be more motivated than others in part.
You know, with Pittsford again, they feel like they're a
stud wide receiver away from taking this thing to a

(26:09):
whole other level. Washington, You've got the relationship with the player,
the player would want to be there. It's a young
front office. They don't have a whole lot of big
ticket items under you know that they're paying for right now.
They shed a bunch of salary the last few years.
They want to play attractive offensive football. They want to
re engage and re energize a fan base. You know,

(26:29):
now that we're fully removed from Snyder and we got
a new head coach, we don't have Snyder's head coach anymore.
So I just think it's more about that. I think
the motivation for those teams would put them in a
position where their offers are looking pretty good, and if
it just so happens, that's also where the receiver wants
to be and it accommodates him. So be it.

Speaker 4 (26:49):
Jason locking Forward joining us Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 5 (26:52):
You mentioned a couple of paragraphs ago the Pittsburgh Steelers
interest in potentially bringing along a wide receiver if available.
They're roster's not done potentially. Mike Tomlin, he's such an
interesting character because there are certain people within the Steelers
fan base or viewing them from AFAR nationally that harold

(27:13):
him as one of the greatest coaches of all time
for never having a losing record, And then there's a
lot of people who say, well, what has he done
after Big Ben? And I fall more on the side
of football's hard. Mike Tomlin's a great coach because he's
been able to make you chicken.

Speaker 4 (27:31):
Salad out of chicken. You know what.

Speaker 5 (27:34):
But now he has a couple of quarterbacks with some
potential Russell Wilson justin fields in trade, both coming to
his program this year. Obviously needs a little more help
around the offense. But how do you think the Steelers
are going to look this year after having a winning
record last year, a playoff berth, but an upgrade at
quarterback this offseason.

Speaker 9 (27:56):
I'm pretty bulls with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Same very bullish
on the Pittsburgh Steelers. And I think, you know, you
look at some of the personalities that Mike Tomlins had
to manage, and you know, you had a period of
time where he had Ben Roethlisberger, right, Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell,
Odd Haley like they had some like they had some

(28:20):
combustible personalities. And for that thing to have stayed together
and to have been as effective as it was for
as long as it was, and doing it at times
with that group with a suspect offensive line, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (28:36):
Man.

Speaker 9 (28:36):
It's like if a ball is hard and everybody has
had seasons where it's just cratered, and the fact that
it never has there I think is absolutely a testament
to his people's skills, his his leadership. The way this
gets over used in this league, but the way he
sets culture, like, the way he establishes like and he's

(28:59):
had again to navigate different dudes, and he've had to
make special accommodations for people at different times. He's had
to deal with some really unusual stuff and again some
strange tasks. And they've always, you know, they've always managed
to be in the race. They've always managed to be
playing games with at least something on the line in
late December, like some other teams in their division, Baltimore,

(29:21):
they've got to do more in the playoffs now, like that, absolutely,
like they've got to make more noise in the postseason.
But I think Mike Tomlin is a genius in managing
people and managing personalities, and he has more talent there
now than he's had in quite some time. And I
think they're going to be able to bully people on
the ground in a way that's going to let that

(29:41):
defense play better than it has even before. You look
at their winning percentage when Watt's healthy in the regular season,
it's pretty dominant. And you add a Patrick Queen if
you're a ball control offense now, and you're keeping that
defense off the field. You're letting them maybe play with
a lead a little more so they can take a
few more chances and tee off from people a little more.

(30:01):
I think the Steelers. I think Steelers have been playing
that division. I really do.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
All Right, Jay, one more coach, you got you, let's
end here. Reports the last couple of days. Maybe Bill
Belichick could be this one and done year on the
television set and could be biding his time for either
the Cowboys, the Giants, or the Eagles after this year.

Speaker 3 (30:21):
Is he done?

Speaker 1 (30:22):
Is one of these teams really on the radar screen
frame after the season?

Speaker 9 (30:25):
Doesn't want to be done? He doesn't want to be done.
And look, I wrote a lot about this to Washington
Posts throughout the course of last season, going back to
early last season. When people are telling me, hey, it's
over here, like it's over. He knows that Kraft knows
that everybody knows it. It's over. Look. If the Eagles
would have blown out Nick Sirianni, I believe Bill Belichick

(30:45):
would have been their head coach. I don't think their
owner was willing to go there. Yet their owners dealt
with some interesting personalities himself in the past, they went
through the whole thing with Chip Kelly. You know, a
coach who comes in with sort of that much power,
and but I do think he and Howie Roseman could
co exist and it would not surprise me if that's
where he landed. He's an East Coast guy, he's coached,

(31:08):
came up in that division. I just think there's certain
franchises where you could see of Bill Belichick and yes,
the Giants and the Eagles or two of them. I
don't think the Dallas thing would work. I think that
would be an absolute last resort, total desperation for all
parties involved. That would shock me. You know. Now, you
know his mentor Parcels was there for a while, and

(31:29):
it was it was good for a minute, but it
wasn't that long that one. They want to pump it.
Theyd don't want Bill Belichick. They want the exact opposite
like that. It's just you know, they they had Bill Belichick,
but Jimmy Johnson it didn't last that long. And then
it was Switzer and you know what I mean, And
then it's it's just a bunch of guys they can control.

(31:49):
So but yeah, those two NFC East teams would not
surprise me if they made a move that that Bill
Belcheck would get a phone call.

Speaker 1 (31:59):
You can bomb on Twitter at Jason locking For. That's
at Jason lock and For. Check him out on Odyssey
Washington Post one O five seven the fan in Baltimore.
Jay as always, buddy, appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (32:08):
Man, we'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 9 (32:09):
I have a great week. Thank you.

Speaker 1 (32:11):
All right, great stuff there from Jason lock and For.
We got great stuff now from them. Dull Martin White,
he's got what's trending in the wide world of sports?

Speaker 3 (32:19):
What do you have?

Speaker 12 (32:20):
Hey, guys, we've seen something we've never seen before today.
Bronnie James made it three in summer league. How about that?

Speaker 1 (32:28):
Well, there goes my teams from what we're gonna do
coming up next.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
That's great. Thanks a lot, Martin can thank you.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
I appreciate that. Yeah.

Speaker 12 (32:34):
He's currently right now leading the Los Angeles Lakers. Leading
both teams are scoring with nine points, four for six
from the floor, one for two from three. That brings
this summer league of three points shooting to a blow.

Speaker 1 (32:47):
Do the math real quick, one for sixteen.

Speaker 12 (32:49):
So there you go, Bronnie James Lakers trailing right now,
di Alana Hawks fifty to forty four, Dalton connect and
Zachary Reshache, the first round pick of both of these
teams not playing currently.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
We also saw how many buckets for Alex Sar tonight?
It was for sixteen, Oh, for seventeen. I just want
to make sure he's okay.

Speaker 12 (33:09):
Hey, listen, I pulled the numbers up on Alex Sar
for Christian rob he's shooting. He's shooting, no kidding, nineteen
percent from the floor, eleven percent from three. Like, how
are you shooting eleven percent from three and you're still
taking six attempts a game? Yeah, well, you know, hey,
shoot or shoot right? I suppose so? I suppose so.

Speaker 9 (33:29):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (33:29):
Speaking of shooter shooting, this one was passing, Caitlin Clark
said a single game WNBA record with nineteen assists.

Speaker 4 (33:35):
Today.

Speaker 12 (33:36):
The Dallas Wings, though, beat the indianaf Ever one on
one to ninety three. Arika on Bungu Wale and Odyssey
Simms both had twenty four for the leading scores on
the winning team. Caplea Clark had twenty four herself, Leah
Boston with twenty eight. Scottie Scheffler the outright favorite to
win the Open Championship. He's been the outright favorite all
four majors in this calendar year. That makes him the

(33:57):
first golfer to DUSO since Tiger Woods in twenty thirteen.
The Open Championships does start in about three hours. Jack McDonald,
Todd Hamilton, Justin Leonard in the first group to tee
off Hall of Fame Ford.

Speaker 3 (34:08):
Cheryl Miller will.

Speaker 12 (34:09):
Serve as the coach of the WNBA team during this
league's All Star Game Saturday and Phoenix, while the Olympic
coach Show Reeve will lead Team USA. Earlier today, all right, yesterday,
I should say, well, no still today my bad hand
up USA basketball route at Serbia in an Olympic tuneup
in Abu Dhabi one five to seventy nine. Steph Curry
Leve with twenty four points, including six three pointers, and

(34:29):
Caleb Williams finally signed his fully guaranteed, four year, thirty
nine million dollar contracts. Caleb asked the Bears not to
agree not to use a franchise tag at the end
of his rookie deal, but the Bears shockingly would not.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
Put that in his contract.

Speaker 3 (34:43):
Jason and Rich back to you, guys. Thanks to Rotch.

Speaker 1 (34:45):
Mart We'll get to Caleb Williams coming up next hour
the show, because that's a really interesting wrinkle. Hey, I
want no franchise.

Speaker 3 (34:51):
Yeah, we're not doing that.

Speaker 1 (34:53):
But coming up next, as you heard Martin, weis just
say something we have never seen or heard before in
NBA history has happened. You will hear it for the
first time. Coming up next right here, Jason Smith, Richie
oh In for Harmon.

Speaker 3 (35:08):
This is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (35:11):
We've heard this. Now we've heard this. I gonna get interesting. Yeah,
he rich has heard it, rich soak it in.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
The Jason Smith Show with Rich Ornberger Doctor rich In
for Mike Harmon tonight, where we're going to get into
a big record setting night by Caitlin Clark coming up
in about ten minutes. But Rich it's very rare that
we get absolute NBA history to break down, and we have.
I mean, we're lucky to have this moment, this moment
in time right now. You and I will bond over

(35:48):
this moment for the rest of our lives. I'll say
when this happened, I was on the air with Rich Hoornberger.
That's what I'm gonna say.

Speaker 5 (35:55):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, this is this is truly going to
be one of those like where were you win moments?

Speaker 4 (36:02):
Sure? Yah history. I really feel like this has.

Speaker 5 (36:06):
Really kind of been I don't know, I don't know
if we were necessarily waiting for the moment for our
friendship to be forged in in perpetuity, but here we are, like,
we get to enjoy this moment together.

Speaker 4 (36:19):
What a phenomenal night for the two of us.

Speaker 1 (36:22):
One disclaimer though, yeah what you got for Rosberger. I
don't think the announcers realized the moment really. I think
it one, well, that's okay, we're gonna do it here,
It's all right.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
But I dig your analogy.

Speaker 1 (36:31):
It's kind of like when when you're dating your wife,
your girlford, when did you know, well, we had this moment, right,
we had this moment where you know, we did The
waitress asked us both kinds of what pie we wanted,
and both of us wanted chocolate satin pie. We looked
at each other and we knew that was our moment,
Like this is our moment right now, this is you
and me, our moment on the air the very first time.

(36:52):
And this has never happened before in NBA history. They've
been playing since they had peach baskets up. And I'll
tell you what, and and and Canada was inventing the
NBA all the way.

Speaker 4 (37:04):
We're going back Massachusetts.

Speaker 3 (37:06):
All hundreds and hundreds a year.

Speaker 1 (37:08):
I mean, Naismith was from Canada, so I mean, I'm
sure he was doing stuff while he was watching the
NHL playoffs. Of course, since the invention of the peach basket,
since the invention of the NBA, we have never had
this happen. And it's clear that it makes sense. That's
four one hundred. This once poiet you, this once proud

(37:30):
franchise is able to hang its hat on this moment
that we have never heard or seen until now.

Speaker 5 (37:39):
At the arena audits as well as a television audience.

Speaker 1 (37:45):
As a Laker, there it is Bronnie James his first
three pointer as a Laker. He was OH for fifteen,
Megan oh for sixteen, but he hits his first three.
The Lakers radio network, Rich, you and I, our friendship
has now cemented over Bronnie James's first three.

Speaker 4 (38:02):
That's it.

Speaker 5 (38:03):
I feel like we've consecrated, ultimately a lifelong bond and
this will this will never end, just like the relationship
the Lakers have with the James family.

Speaker 4 (38:15):
I'm sure we saw Lebron. It will be Lebron Junior,
Lebron the third.

Speaker 5 (38:21):
I'm sure we'll be coming down the pike somewhere soon,
and I'm sure Bronni will want to play with his
son and his son after that. Oh, it is still
to be a lineage. It'll be a family affair. I
applaud Bronnie James in some small way for shooting through
what is going to be a turbulent offseason. What is

(38:45):
going to be a turbulent season, because he is not
Lebron James senior is. He is a very different player.
He is a very inferior player to his father, and unfortunately,
in the big business, with the bright lights and with
a lot of millions and in some cases billions of
dollars riding on performances, Man oh Man, the criticism gets

(39:11):
harsher and it cuts closer to the bone. And I
know that his father is doing a good job guarding
him from some of that and the Lakers are doing
good job guarding him from some of that, but look
the slings and arrows they're coming.

Speaker 4 (39:26):
And it's not just going to be off the court.

Speaker 5 (39:29):
It's not just gonna be knuckleheads like me or you
or anybody else who are going to be able to
say things to him. It's gonna be the whispers on
the court, you know, in the hallway. Every once in
a while, he's going to turn a corner and people
are gonna stop talking, and he's going to be wondering
if they were talking about him, and they everywhere he goes,

(39:51):
the words, the word nepotism is going to be close
to the conversation and call it fair or not. That's
just the way it's going to be for Bronnie. And
I feel for him in some way. If he has
the toughness to make it through a single season of
dealing with.

Speaker 4 (40:08):
That, good for him, because I don't know if I
would be able to do it.

Speaker 1 (40:12):
And apparently rich Hoornberger was a mean girl in high school.
When you cross that corner, you're gonna wonder if I'm
talking about you, Richie Al He's just fretting godship everywhere
he goes that keeps trying to make fetch happen.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
I don't understand he's so mean. Don't talk to Richie. O,
don't talk to him.

Speaker 4 (40:27):
Look, I mean, let me ask you, Jason.

Speaker 5 (40:29):
So this has been going on for I don't know
a month, maybe a little longer than that. Now are
you Are you feeling any differently about Bronnie being a
Laker than you did the day he was drafted?

Speaker 1 (40:41):
Look, I honestly, And we'll get into this coming up
next to week with Kaitlyn Clark. I think things are
gonna start calming down for Bronnie James. Now I actually
see this differently, that things are gonna start calming instead
of getting worse. We got that, we got the record
setting night for Kaitlyn Clark. Coming up next, Jason Smith,
mean girl, Rich Hornberger.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
This fucks. Sure to catch live editions of The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern,
seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (41:10):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon,
Doctor Rich Hornberger in for Harmon tonight, and we're gonna
get to Caitlin Clark in a second. But we had
Summer League heroics. Just right now, as cameras are following
Bronnie James as he leaves the floor the Lakers triumphant

(41:31):
victory over the Hawks eighty seven to eighty six, And
we're gonna bring you the second great moment in NBA history.
We brought a two about a half hour ago, something
you had never seen before. Bronnie James hitting his first
three of his NBA career. It was outstanding, it was amazing. Well, Richie, oh,

(41:55):
he wasn't happy with just one. Bronnie James decided he
check give me the ball. All of them in the
first half got a chance at another. Hey, there you go.

Speaker 3 (42:09):
Lakers TV on the call.

Speaker 1 (42:11):
Ronny James two threes tonight, Lakers win probably his best
all around game, Lakers get their first win of Summer League.

Speaker 6 (42:20):
ESPN on the call. Rather sorry, I said, Lakers TV.
I think they're sending Lakers TV to Summer League. You
know you're right, You're right. It wasn't Billy Mack. I
should have thought about that. But Bronny goes for twelve
points tonight. Nice night for him, five out eleven from
the floor.

Speaker 1 (42:36):
I look like we said a few minutes ago, I
think things will start calming down a little bit now.
And you know, once you get your first couple of
three pointers und your belt. Now now it's just bombs away.
Now he's gonna shoot ten or twelve threes a game.
He's gonna be clapping for the ball. Hey, come on,
come on, I'm hot. I'm hot, I'm hitting threes. Now,
give me the ball, give it to me.

Speaker 4 (42:52):
Filling up the basket. There's no question about it.

Speaker 5 (42:54):
I think, like we spoke about earlier, this truly has
been a growth moment for our relationship getting to win
this history together twice, but also for Bronnie James.

Speaker 4 (43:07):
Yeah, there's no question, but twice twice we got.

Speaker 5 (43:09):
To celebrate this great moment, really incredible stuff.

Speaker 4 (43:13):
Look, I truly I'm invested.

Speaker 5 (43:16):
In this storyline like a lot of basketball fans are,
and not for the reasons a lot of people think about.
I'm not waiting for this guy to trip over himself
and to prove everybody right that he only got the
job because of who his dad is. I hope this
works out because it's more fun that way.

Speaker 4 (43:34):
I get it.

Speaker 5 (43:34):
You know, everybody has their opinions about the way people
get jobs. Sometimes but you know, and honestly, if the
ends justify the means, then who really cares?

Speaker 1 (43:44):
Who really cares?

Speaker 5 (43:45):
And That's exactly where this could go, and I'm hopeful
that it goes there.

Speaker 1 (43:50):
So from Bronnie James to Caitlin Clark, who said a
w NBA record tonight in the Fevers loss of the
Dallas Wings, nineteen assists I really wanted to get to
twenty would have been a phenomenal night for her. But
nineteen assists to go along with twenty four points, However,

(44:11):
the Fever go basically scoreless down the stretch. In the
final few minutes, a ninety three to ninety three game
turns into a runaway win for the Dallas Wings. And look,
Dallas is not a great team. You know, they're struggling.
They had only won five games coming into this year.
They win it one on one, ninety three, and there's

(44:32):
a great night for Caitlin Clark, And there's also a
controversy that comes along with it. Nineteen assists tonight unbelievable, right,
you see that that people were crazy denying her talent,
talking about her not being someone who is deserving of
a spot on the Olympic team.

Speaker 3 (44:48):
All of these things.

Speaker 1 (44:50):
But I'm gonna tell you this rich is that she
did not take a shot in the final six minutes
of this game. She had a shot attempt, she had
a miss three right at the six minute mark to
go in the fourth quarter. She did not take another
shot the rest of the game. And you're talking about
someone who is the all time leading scorer in college

(45:11):
basketball history with range to hit threes that nobody else
in the league has.

Speaker 3 (45:16):
Look, I get that.

Speaker 1 (45:18):
Yes, you want her to be a little bit less
deferential in big times. And maybe she's caught up a
little bit now because she's dishing the ball so well,
she's seeing the court so well, coverages are rolling towards
her so much, she's able to find the open player.
She's still getting her points right still at twenty four tonight, right,
So it's happening.

Speaker 3 (45:36):
But sometimes I.

Speaker 1 (45:37):
See her and I go, yeah, Okay, maybe that's not
a play where you want to try to dish and push.
Maybe this is where you get a little bit selfish
and take a shot. Flip side of it is, Hey,
you're Christy sides. How about we make sure we draw
some plays up. When Kitlyn Clark goes three four minutes
without a bucket. Let's draw a couple of plays up
and get her the ball and get her a couple
of shots. She can't go six minutes. She can't go

(45:59):
the final six minutes of a game and not take
a shot. So, while the truth is somewhere in the middle, yes,
she Kaitlyn Clark be less deferential. Yeah, do you need
to draw more plays?

Speaker 4 (46:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (46:09):
The bottom line is you can't have her go oh
for oh from the floor in the final sixth man.
That is just not a recipe for anything.

Speaker 5 (46:16):
Well, I agree with that, and that is both speaking
to the basketball side and the marketing side of being
the Indiana Fever head coach. Look, head coaching is difficult
because even though you're not as a professional basketball coach
recruiting where you know, you need to show all of
the high school recruits how many points your your starting

(46:39):
point guard is scoring per game so that you can
refill that spot, you know, with with one of these
five czar talents coming out of high school. You know,
but what you are doing is you are trying to
recruit fans. You're trying to recruit the trust of the
administration around you, the general manager, the president, of basketball.

(46:59):
Operation's the owner of the club. Because it's bad pr
when your star doesn't score down the stretch of a
basketball game.

Speaker 4 (47:07):
There's no question about it.

Speaker 5 (47:08):
If Lebron James ever goes oh farroh the last six
minutes of a Laker game, that is the first question
at the podium post game.

Speaker 4 (47:16):
Win or lose.

Speaker 5 (47:18):
Why weren't you given any looks? Why didn't you make
the decision to drive the lane and score? It needs
to be discussed on the sideline or any television time out.
So I agree with you in both aspects of this,
from a marketing standpoint, from a public relations standpoint, and
also from the basketball standpoint. But one thing I think

(47:40):
has become clearer and clearer this season with Caitlin Clark
and then the fever as they made the right choice.
She is a star. She can handle this league. I
think she's growing. I think her teammates are becoming better
because she's there. I think they're becoming a stronger squad
because she's there.

Speaker 9 (47:59):
Now.

Speaker 5 (47:59):
The just my opinion. I have a potentially more of
a layman's education of the WNBA. My interest in the
WNBA started, like with Caitlyn Clark, so I'm interested to
be educated along the storyline that she goes because like

(48:20):
Tiger Woods attracted me to professional golf, Caitlin Clark's attracting
me to the WNBA. But what I can tell from
what I've seen is this whole experiment started out with
a lot of naysayers, and I think they've been quieted
over the course of this season.

Speaker 1 (48:36):
We'll have more on Caitlin Clark coming up in ninety seconds, say,
bigger point to make than besides, hey, shoot the ball
in the final six minutes. But first, Martin Whiites has
what's trending in the wide world of sports.

Speaker 3 (48:47):
I'm dumb.

Speaker 12 (48:47):
The Dallas Wings beat the Indiana Fever one on one
to ninety three. But as you guys are just talking about,
we heard history or saw history earlier today.

Speaker 1 (48:56):
Caitlin decided not to shoot that. Your will.

Speaker 8 (49:02):
Again incredible and that is the nineteenth assister Katelin incredible
near WNBA's single game record.

Speaker 12 (49:12):
She did set that record along with twenty four points,
and Leah Boston had twenty eight points to lead the Fever.
Arica on Gumbwalle and Odyssey sim both at twenty four
to lead the winning Dallas Wings. Summer League just wrapped
up for the Los Angeles Lakers at Atlanta Hawks Lakers
with a one point lead eighty seven to eighty six.
Brownie James finally hit a three pointer, In fact that

(49:33):
he hit two of them, finishing five for eleven from
the floor, two for five from three for twelve points.
Colin Castleton led the Lakers with seventeen in the win
and Summer League. The Open Championship is about to start
in about two hours now. Jack McDonald, Todd Hamilton, Justin
Leonard in the first group. Scotti Scheffler is the outright
favorite to win the Open Championship. He's been the outright

(49:56):
favorite and all four majors in this calendar year. He's
the first golf for the do that since Tiger Woods
in twenty twenty three. Hall of Fame for which cher
Miller will serve as the coach of the WNBA team
during the league's All Star Game Saturday and Phoenix, while
Olympic coach Cheryl Reeve will lead Team USA. The White
Sox have designated catching Martin Maldonado for assignmon and earlier today,

(50:17):
USA basketball route at Serbia.

Speaker 3 (50:19):
And an Olympic tune up.

Speaker 12 (50:20):
In Abu Dhabi one O five ninety seventy nine, Steph
Curry led with twenty four points, including six three pointers.
Caleb Williams signed his fully guaranteed, four year, thirty nine
million dollar contract. He asked the Bears to not use
the franchise tack at the end of his rookie deal.
Chicago declined to make that provision in his contract.

Speaker 1 (50:41):
Jason and Rich back to you guys.

Speaker 3 (50:43):
Thank you, m d up.

Speaker 1 (50:44):
Now you talk about the situation with Caitlin Clark and
just how I don't want to say people are missing
the point, but you know, sometimes we try to force
stuff to happen, and sometimes it's just you have to
understand that you can't force it.

Speaker 3 (51:02):
You have to just give credit where credit's due.

Speaker 1 (51:04):
Right outside of Caitlin Clark today, look nineteen assists for
the fever WNBA record. You see all the stats, everything
she's doing. Last night the story broke, the WNBA gets
a new two point two billion dollar television rights deal
for the next eleven years. They were making sixty million
dollars a year TV rights. Now this year, now that's

(51:28):
gonna be up over three hundred million dollars a year.
And that's due to one person. It's great that we
mentioned Angel Reese and some of the other rookies, and
they're all good players, right, and they're all star players.
And Angel Reese is a really good player. And you see,
you know what, the double double she has this year
getting a lot of attention. Absolutely, people are making giving
a run for Rookie of the Year. But that's like, okay,

(51:49):
this is just I hate Kitlin Clark. I want to
talk about somebody else, but let's just be honest. Is
that none of this is happening without Caitlin Clark. There's
no charge, there's no charter flight, you're flying commercial without
Kitlin Clark. You are still working on whatever TV deal
you have without Kitlin Clark. When you're looking at the
Mount Rushmore of the most influential, biggest athletes the last

(52:12):
twenty five years, Caitlin Clark is on that Mount Rushmore.
After three months in the WNBA by herself, she has
given you a two point two billion dollar deal. She
has increased your television revenue by over three hundred percent.
Because if Caitlin Clark's not in this draft, I'm sorry.
Angel Reese, as good a player as she is Camilla Cardoso,

(52:34):
all these players, Hey, they're going No one's going crazy
for the WNBA rights for two point two billion dollars
a year. Conversely, if Kitlin Clark is the only one
who came out this year, you're getting two point two
billion dollars. It's Kitlyn Clark, It's Lebron James, It's Tiger Woods,
it's sho heey Otani. It's the athletes who transcend the
sport and bring attention and money and revenue that we've

(52:57):
never seen before. I mean, and just think about that,
and get the ok WNBA and they're making two point
two billion. The NBA is about to sign a seventy
six billion dollar TV rights agreement. But okay, I understand
if you're talking with the WNBA that came from a
summer league that was lucky to get the attention that
it had, and now it's front burner and everybody's getting paid.

(53:17):
Everybody's flying charter and flying. I mean, this is because
of one person. And I get that you're upset that
one person is getting credit because you've played in the
league for a long time, Are you coaching the league
in a long time, or you're another rookie who is
a good player. But let's be honest, Caitlyn Clark is
making all of this happen. I mean, you're talking Caitlyn Clark, Lebron, Tiger.

Speaker 3 (53:38):
And O'tani.

Speaker 1 (53:39):
That's your mount Rushmore of the transcendent athlete to the
last twenty five years.

Speaker 5 (53:43):
Oh, there's no question about it, Jason, And I think
one of the things when you speak about all those
other players that they have in common that Caitlin Clark
doesn't quite yet have in common yet is they've been
dominant in the sports.

Speaker 4 (53:56):
Now, Caitlin Clark has been very good. Has she dominated?

Speaker 5 (54:00):
Has she been the best player in her league yet ever?

Speaker 9 (54:05):
No?

Speaker 4 (54:05):
And she's in the infancy of her career.

Speaker 5 (54:08):
But one thing I can say for certain is she
is the most influential WNBA basketball player that's ever left.

Speaker 4 (54:15):
And there's no.

Speaker 5 (54:16):
Questioning that because already you can see the tremendous weight
and gravity of her influence on this league.

Speaker 4 (54:25):
Like you mentioned, nobody's flying charter.

Speaker 5 (54:28):
Nobody is getting a television rights deal to the tune
of hundreds of millions of dollars per year without Caitlin Clark.
And I'm not saying anybody needs to kiss her ring.
And I don't think she's asking for anybody to kiss
her ring. But we are in the age of the influencer.
Look similarly, I don't know if Baby Gronk is the
greatest youth football player.

Speaker 4 (54:50):
On the planet, but I do know his name, and
I do.

Speaker 3 (54:53):
Know that he is an influencer and.

Speaker 1 (54:55):
So and so. Yes, even trying to slide into Baby
Gronk DMS. Hey, it's rich Ornberger. Six years in the NFL.
Listen to my intro on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 5 (55:06):
Mean girl, you get it? Come on, baby Croc. Look
we're I'm filling it for Mike Harton. I need you,
I need the juice. Could you be a guest? Look, yes,
I've been working a lot of angles. I've been up
late on the East Coast. But the point I'm trying
to arrive at is Caitlin Clark is an influencer, and
that influence has netted all of these basketball players more attention.

(55:29):
And that's better for the league, whether they want to
admit it or not.

Speaker 1 (55:33):
Yeah, and it's it's difficult to see the backlash. I
get the backlash on the court like I get Diana
TARROSSI saying yeah, reality is we're gonna make her earn
it on the court. I completely get that, Like that's hey,
but between the lines, you're gonna show us if you're
really this good. I get that. But the off the
court stuff and the and the way she's being treating

(55:53):
the way that it's that. Cheryl Reeve, who's the coach
of the the Olympic team baby has said, I have
no interest in Caitlyn Clark. We're about more than her.
Doesn't want to answer questions about her. This is where
you have to say, hey, grow up a little bit.
Like everybody's doing well. I don't understand why. I get
you're upset that you coached for a long time or

(56:14):
other players have played for a long time, and here
comes this one player who's twenty two years old and
is in the league for three months and suddenly she's
getting everything that you never had. Well, guess what, she's
making everything better for you. Salaries are going up, more
money is coming. Everybody's winning here, and you gotta put
that jealousy aside. You want to make her earn it
on the floor one hundred percent of how it's supposed

(56:35):
to go, But you need to step back and go
all right, Are we really doing the right thing?

Speaker 3 (56:39):
Here?

Speaker 1 (56:39):
Is me seeming like I am anti Caitlin Clark and
the players are anti Caitlin Clark and coaches are anti
Kaitlyn Clark. Does that really seem like that's the right thing?
Does that really seem the fair thing to do? I mean,
look at just what her presence has done, and here's
where you are now. She was out every five minutes
saying how great she was and I'm doing this, and
I'm doing this. Look out. Then I get a little

(57:01):
bit of the backlash. But she's trying to just go
out and play basketball and saving her her feistiness for
on the court because she likes to get into with
teams with players on the court. That's why all of
this seems like it's so out of bounds. And at
this point, they should be shaking her hand before every
game saying, hey, thank you, thank you. We're gonna try
to kick your ass now, but thank you so much.
We're all gonna line up to shake your hand for

(57:23):
everything you've done for us before we get ready and
go to play this game.

Speaker 4 (57:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (57:26):
Look, I mean same with the PJ golfers when Tiger
Woods came along and there was the same rebuttal from
all of those goals. I shouldn't say all of those golfers.
I don't want to generalize. I don't want to lump
everybody into the same picture. I'm sure there were certain
players who were rooting for Tiger, but you remember as
well as I do, Jason, because you're a golf fan.
How there were plenty of people rebuking and refusing to

(57:51):
acknowledge the greatness of a young man on tour who
was changing things. And he was changing things in a hurry,
more attention than the sport has been paid, was paid
during his rise and during his sustained success, and it
rubbed a lot of the old timers on tour the
wrong way, and frankly, a lot of the country clubs

(58:11):
around the country. It rattled things to the foundation. And
I think Caitlin Clark is having a similar effect on
the WNBA. You can see it. There's a lot of
people uncomfortable with the change. There's a lot of people
who are rebuking the opportunity to highlight and exemplify the
influence that she's had on the league. And that's fine,

(58:33):
that's fine. Not everybody's going to come to the party.
Some people are just going to be late, you know,
and I think that's I think that's what's happening right
now in the WNBA as well.
