(00:50):
Big night at baseball, Mike Harmon, it was Kershaw Day.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
The Mets win again.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Oh, it's just an outstanding day. This day was just
filled with all kinds of fun stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
We had to know, Hitter.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Oh and it's great, it's it's it's it's some kind
of day. It's an anything can happen Thursday.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
Well, it's the best day ever, is what SpongeBob would
be singing right now.
Speaker 5 (01:11):
Sure, sure, I don't know that it is my.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Team lost again, but otherwise now, no, no, I accept.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
You can't sit here and say, oh, my team lost again.
Your team loses all that, your whites. You're the worst
team in baseball. Every day I waked up with how
many years? No promise of.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
The new day? No, it wasn't that.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
It was that was that Paul appol Yeah, there you go.
I wait up, and I you know, hope it springs
e turtle, you know, the the good Lord. And it
gave me another opportunity towards greatness to come hang out
with all of you here. Our team's fully assembled here
at Fox Sports Radio. Uh and and it sounds so
pretty and we've got some great stories that we're talking about.
(01:51):
But yeah, I got to watch the US women's team
win a game. I got to watch a bunch of
other Olympic events, and then watching baseball, kershaw, great feel
good story. One of my favorite guys, keep pitching to
your fifty. That's great, Net's win. I kind of shrug,
like Ian was really excited in the back, thinking, hey,
(02:12):
you were gonna come in coming off of that big
walk off win.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
You know you like Jeff, I got, I got hammered, dude,
you kidd man, I can barely stand up after that.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
Why do you think he doubled doubled up?
Speaker 1 (02:25):
No, I just I just I just read the ingredients.
I'm hammered, man, I have. I have absolutely hammered.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
Got a little bit loose in the afternoon. I am
nicely done.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Drunk on chocolate and diet PEPSI that's me right now. Man,
it is time to celebrate. But we got Rick Buker
coming up in about twenty minutes. All the latest on
the US men's team as they head to the Olympics
and are they going to win a gold medaal Joel Embiid,
cost Us All, Rick Buker, all the big news in
the NBA coming up in a bit. But with NFL
(02:57):
teams coming to training camp this week, it's it's been
it's been. I don't want to say it's been over
the top, but it's been a better week than I
expected for news out of the NFL. Right teams are
showing up. It's one of the okay teams here, which
is excited they're back. And you know, really there's not
a lot of news in the in the preseason anymore,
(03:17):
because look, the star players don't play, and you know,
outside of injuries, you know, it's not quite what it
used to be. But man, this week, it's like they
decided to show up and say, all right, hey, NFL coaches, owners,
we're gonna give people content because it's been a minute
since we gave people content. And there is nothing better
than Jerry Jones still trying to make his we're all
(03:42):
in on this season happen and trying to wave a
magic wand and convince people that being all in means
something other than I've punted on twenty twenty four. I'm
not signing anybody, and I'm gonna make big changes in
the off season. Here's Jerry Jones from earlier today, Cowboys
open training camp. Very excited, Oxenheart, very very excited, and
(04:03):
Jerry Jones once again tries to explain what he meant
by earlier this offseason when he said he's all in
on twenty twenty four.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
I'm all in.
Speaker 6 (04:12):
I'm all in. Sometimes being all in means you narrow
you remove the months out here that are in the future,
and you narrow it down to where all we're talking
about is right now in the next playoff season, and
that's it for everybody.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
We're all in.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
We're all in.
Speaker 6 (04:34):
It's all right there. We all got some things out
here in the future. Another two of their years on contracts,
all that stuff. Let's all get in here zero right
now in this Dak Scott his year contract.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Let's focus right here.
Speaker 6 (04:49):
We all got a lot on the line for that
playoff game, a lot of it.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Boy.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
If someone said to me, you know, I hear the
phrase word salad being used a lot now, especially with
politics and everybody making speeches. What's a definition of word salad?
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Right there?
Speaker 1 (05:04):
That was That was your your Jerry Jones word salad
of being all in. Because when you're all in sometimes
it means you ignore the months ahead and you're just
in on what's happening now. And we're and and and
there's things we're looking at now. We're fu and we're
focused and Dak and there's a playoff game coming.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Boy.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
That is a word salad by Jerry Jones.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Man.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
That is a that is a Cob salad, and a
Waldorf salad and a Caesar salad. You got all you
got like seven different kinds of salad going on with
that Jerry Jones comment, still trying to make all in happen,
Like going all in didn't mean I'm not signing anybody.
I'm not giving anybody a new contract because I'm gonna
make big changes after this season. That's what all in means,
(05:48):
and that's what Jerry Jones is meant by all in
from the beginning. And I love how we still trying
to make it happen, Like, yeah, now, let me really
explain to you guys what all in means, Like I'm
gonna try to push it away from the narrative that
give me any criticism and makes it look like I'm
doing something positive. I love he's trying to make this
happen well.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
I mean, look, the old rule of thumb on the
show is I can't fall to good strategy. Is this
a good strategy? No, Benjamin Franklin. It's often quoted in
movies and TV, but attributed to him. If you fail
to plan, you're planning to fail, right, mantras on the
wall kind of like be a champion today kind of thing.
As you go through your processes and procedures, right, whether
(06:29):
you're planning saving money or getting into a you know,
the perfect college or finding your next gig, whatever the
case may be. All of that requires some planning and foresight.
Here he's saying like it it's all about twenty twenty four,
So that's what he should have just said. It's the
put up or shut up here right the contracts, we'll
deal with them, but right now, this is the team
(06:50):
we have, this is the coach we have, and we
have to go and try to win and try to
see if you can inspire someone to cheer for you
or start clapping randomly because you stare at him down
and you need that little bit of support with a
gleam in their eye. But for Jerry Jones, yeah, it's
been pretty obvious all along. I think in the end
he folds and he breaks free of Steven's mind meld
(07:11):
and mind control and he signs everybody and it's an
absolute disaster that he reverts back to old Jerry Jones
when he when.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
He decided to let Dak Prescott test free agency.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
That was it.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
That was the big moment where Okay, things are going
to be a little different, and they're gonna be different
in Dallas after this year. After they stink because they're
not gonna be any good because it didn't improve in
the offseason. Jerry Look, Jerry Jones. He told us that
you just got to follow Jerry Jones. He leaves you clues.
He's not like some kind of mystere It's like you're
watching knives out or glass on you.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
Yeah, but you're also trying to make it out like
he's giving us a Machiavellian breadcrumb trailed.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
He has said, I'm going to be around a long time.
I don't have to do we don't have to go
crazy this year. I'm allowing my franchise quarterback to hit
free agency, leaving it open that I might not sign him.
Other players that you'd think I want to sign, I
am not signing that they are not getting. He went
on to say, today big contracts take a lot of time.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
They take a lot of time.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Now this is Jerry Jones has told us things are
going to be different. Had he just use a different
phrase because that that's really because because you hit on it.
Had he just said, hey, focus is on this year.
Don't talk to me about a new contract. Don't talk
because you could hear at the end when he said
Dak wants a contract we're focused on the playoff game.
He's already fast forward and on this season to January
(08:34):
when the Cowboys. What he's thinking is they're going to
be twelve and five, but they're not.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
Hey, ten and a half wins, buddy.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah, good luck, good luck with that.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
You got to Giants and what they got out there,
I mean they got is Shane's kid's a better general manager.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Okay, And yet Daniel Jones does stink, but they He's
looked ahead already to the playoffs and is already at
DAK with a put up or shut up game in
the playoffs that will allow him to potentially get paid.
Like that's where his mind is at.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
It forgets that.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
You have to just see he's telling you. You just
have to read the clues he's thinking. In the playoffs,
Dak Prescott's next game. If he stinks, there's no way
I'm bringing him back. If he wins games and we
get to the NFC title game and Dak is really good,
I'll give Dak sixty five million dollars. That's what we've
told you is gonna happen all along. Jerry Jones is
telling you this is my strategy. Now the whole all
(09:30):
in stuff. This is just stupid because this is Jerry
Jones just trying to make himself look like, hey, I'm
I'm I'm doing something fiscally responsible, but not understanding that
all in is something that has a completely different.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Meaning from what you say.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
All in means, hey, we are we are taking all
our assets and putting them in on this season. All
in means going out and spending money on some some
some vets for one year that they're gonna take you
over the top.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
That's all in.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
This is rebuilding like this, this is this is we're
staying status quo. This is I am passing the bet,
I am calling the bet and moving on. This is
not anything even close to all in. This is unfolding
so I can go to the bathroom. This is I
need to get a sandwich. Can you take my hand
for a few minutes? Except a few minutes is the
whole season. That's what Jerry Jones is doing. And I
love that he's still trying to make it seem like
(10:19):
it's the exact opposite of what he is. I give
him a lot of credit for throwing out there like
I don't know what's going through his head. When he
says again, where I'm all in, everybody's laughing at me. No, okay,
word salad coming up here in the months of the
future is not all in in the present time when
you look at what Frodo had to do to get
(10:41):
that ring into the fire in the in the volcano
with the guy from Rudy and Rudy shows up and
he sacks a couple of those orcs and uh, and
it turns out it's kind of like his movie too.
And then we had the guy, the Mortensen fellow, who's
a nominated a couple of times, and we had I
(11:03):
think a guy from Harry Potter was in a couple
of them, and they went through a wall and they
fought a bunch of people that were born out of
the bottom of the ground and some some volcano fire.
And this is what it means to be all in
like that. He may as well have said that, and
it would have made just as much, said to what
he said earlier today.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Welcome to the future where the present is the past,
you know that that kind of thing.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Look, it's remember Harrow Smith Singer's daughter was in it.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
And I was thinking crazy and I'm thinking, dude, looks
like a lady and all the big hits and sweet emotion.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Now remember this, though, Smith, we are in a day
and age is if you can get someone with some clout,
you know, with the capitol k H to get all
get it. People excited about a word or phrase, you
can completely change the meaning of it. Right, words that
meant the opposite. Hey, you know they got used incorrectly,
So now it's added to the dictionary. So Jerry Jones
(11:59):
in his mind, he's all in on this year, and
I can see the logic because.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
Here's follow me. Here is right now.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
There's a what do we talk fifty to fifty on Dak?
Or everybody puts out their top ten quarterback list, by default,
he ends up at the back end of that list
or just off it, right, depending on whether you like
Jalen Hurts or some of those other guys that might
be there. But we have Dak in that. But in
general folks would be like, I don't love Dak. Or
(12:27):
they look at regular season wins, give it a little
more credence, look at his touchdown interception ratio and maybe
they stand for him. But either way, it's a Harvey
Dent flip of the coin in terms of a love
hate relationship with Dak Prescott. I think Jerry's playing it
as well. Either way, I'm gonna be right because if
he stinks in the playoffs, everybody's gonna come to my
(12:48):
side that I shouldn't have paid him. And if we
win and he's great, then I can offer him, you know,
the King's ransom to be the greatest cowboy ever.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
This is in Jerry's mind. No, not in reality, you.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
No, this is what I see in Jerry's mind. I
see in Jerry's mind. I'm mad at this group for
under I'm mad at this group for underachieving. I'm mad
at Dak, I'm mad at Michah Parsons, I'm mad at
c d Lamb. So I'm gonna show them. I'm gonna
send them a message by saying nobody's getting new deals.
I'm not gonna go sign new players. We're not gonna
(13:24):
spend a lot of money. I'm mad at you, and
I want you to prove to me that you're still good.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I'm sending you.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
This message like that's what I see in this. I'm
mad at my players, and i'm mad we're not winning.
So I'm gonna send you a message like, I feel
like that's what's going on in his head.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
Well he also, someone should send him the game tape
of what that defense did the playoffs to remind him too.
Your offense stunk, but your defense was historically bad. Send
them a bunch of Jordan Love rookie cards one a day,
like you're dofrain from shawsh Egg.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
Oh Love kid had had a perfect passer rating in
the game against us.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
We had dak So yeah, boy, that just depresses me
all over again.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Just keep thinking about that all the way. But we're
all in, all in on this here. I just keep
going with all in. I want every day and to
try to explain what being all in means every single day.
Tell me about being all in, Jerry, tell me what
this is all about.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
This is great. We're rolling. We're rolling.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
This not nearly the only quarterback drama and NFL drama
that we have because already a presumptive number one quarterback
was not taking number one reps.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
I'm so excited. That's you wish it was Tebow.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
That story is coming up next right here, Jason and Mike,

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon, Well Dressed Cobo Livethetiraq dot com studios.
We got that big NFL story coming up in a
couple of minutes, but just really quick, this is the
silliest but most controversial story we've had yet the Olympics.
As you would add, they're opening ceremonies yet and already
(16:58):
coaches are getting set tome.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Because of illegal things.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Canada has axed their soccer coach from the Olympics over
this drone controversy. This is a story we've been following
the last few days where a low level staffer, and
again I'm just gonna use all the language and words
that we used in Spygate, a low level staffer for
Team Canada flew way drone over New Zealand's practice and
(17:26):
was caught. And when this happened, there was controversy. Wait
a minute, there's a drone being flown over our practice.
What's going on? And the low level staffer said, oh, hey, no, no,
I'm a youth coach back in Canada. I was just
trying to, you know, see some practice and get some tips.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Everything.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Yeah, not so much. He gets sent home, assistant coaches
get sent home, and then after their head coach, after
Bett priestman was going to just sit out the game
against New Zealand. Today Canada decides we're sending her home
to all over. The involved the use of drones to
spy on New Zealand's practice.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
Now Canada won the game today two to one.
Speaker 6 (18:06):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
But now you have spygate has come to soccer.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
And and and I'll tell you it's like they they're
following the Spygate all the blueprints to a t.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
You know.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
The coach says, I knew nothing about this. I didn't
know what was going on. Your short rises.
Speaker 5 (18:27):
Team stands for yeah, no, no, no.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
Uh and again and and look, it's kind of spygate,
and it's the Michigan football scandal because Canadian soccer, both
men's and women's, look, they haven't been you know, great
for you know, historically, but the last few years Canada,
both men's and women have taken a big jump. And
there's reports that this has been going on for a
(18:51):
long time, which might explain, like, hey, getting the defensive
signals might explains Michigan's rise to being a national championship
team the last couple of years, when Harbaugh couldn't beat
Ohio State and Michigan was winning seven or eight games
a year. Suddenly now we're great. Oh yeah, oh we've
got the other team signals. Suddenly, both the men's and
women's teams the last seven eight years have become really good.
(19:16):
And whenever a team goes from hey, we're just kind
of existing to hey, we're really good, there's always a reason,
right college football, college basketball, whenever a team goes from hay,
running three or four games, Oh, suddenly now you're winning
ten games.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
How is that happening?
Speaker 1 (19:29):
You know, there's something going on that hadn't been done before.
So this is just kind of connecting dots a little
bit here. But here's the rise of Canadian soccer for
both the men's and women's And oh, by the way,
here they are. They get caught flying a drone over
New Zealand's practice and it taped the whole practice, not parts,
but not it taped the entire practice.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
So you tell me what's going on?
Speaker 4 (19:50):
Yeah, pre spend the coach there. Since twenty twenty and
again going deeper into the story, you know reports that
it was part of the interview processes. Hey, this is
going to be part of your job responsibilities. How comfortable
are you feeling about this? So the question is we
just know about it now. That means the Canadians are
really good at keeping secrets or they don't interview a
(20:11):
lot of people for jobs one or the other. I'll
do it, I'll take it. But doesn't it you know
you're not looking at Canada a little side eye?
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Right?
Speaker 4 (20:20):
I always been this you know nice? Oh yo, sorry,
you bet you you know all that kind of stuff.
And now it's like, ah, they were taping you the
whole time.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
Now this this.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
Is like spygate. How long did the page got away
with it before they got eric? It had to be
a former coach who knew what was going on that
turned them in.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
That's right. Who knew what? How long? And what do
you do about it?
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Right?
Speaker 4 (20:46):
So the criminal charge we talked about it. Hey, you're
gonna get get some jail time, charged with maintaining an
unmanned aircraft over a prohibited area, an offense that carries
get this maximum prison sentence of one year and a
fine of roughly forty five thousand euros, which is about
fifty k.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
Oh it's actually more than that. The exchange rate has
gone up now it's a little bit more now.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Yeah, yeah, I just went according to the uh to
the reporter here. But yeah, I look, I remember the
conversion rate just a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
It did not work in my favor.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
I got a thing.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Now, here's the thing, this is what now this to
advance this this argument here, like if they've been doing
this for so long, as you said, this is part
of the job interview, can you fly your drune? Like
did they just fly the drone too low?
Speaker 6 (21:33):
Like?
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Did like did the did the guy doing it just
just screw up? And all I'm flying the drone.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
To sloppy right.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
Hubers will get you to mention, not to mention the
fact that for the Olympics security is a little bit different. Right,
There's been a lot of you know, worry of incidents,
et cetera, you know, around this Olympics. So I gotta
imagine at every practice facil in any place in the
(22:01):
village whatever we're talking about, a level of security that
is that has gone beyond to another level. So all
of a sudden there's a drone in the area, because
let's face it, right, drones are used to deliver packages
and and if you have nefarious intent, could be other things.
So yeah, there's gonna be more security involved in this case.
(22:22):
This guy got eight months that he agreed to. They
confiscated his drone and quote other electronic equipment seized from
his hotel room.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
What else is on your drones?
Speaker 1 (22:34):
I'm just a youth coach. But I'm just a youth coach.
That's all I am.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
I bet just a youth coach.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
This is like the scene in Hot Fuzz when the
priest goes, I'm a man of God and he puts
his hands down to two automatic weapons come up and
he starts firing at Simon Peg.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
I'm t I'm a man of God.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Here come the guns.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
It's next level man, right.
Speaker 5 (22:59):
But I'm just a humble man.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
I don't I don't know any of this technology. You know,
I got it as a gift, sir. Your drone costs
five thousand dollars. You could have paid forty nine ninety nine,
you know, on the interwebs as part of prime.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
But no, it's that.
Speaker 4 (23:16):
It's a story that I fear will continue to make
the Canadian squads look pretty bad. We're gonna we're gonna
get more details and more people are gonna come o
oh yeah, They've been doing it for years.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon Live, The tirerac
dot Com Studious. Hey Michigan won a title, the Patriots
won some Super Bowls. Hey Canada got relevant?
Speaker 5 (23:37):
But hey wait wait wait we got we got a
great tweet that came in.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
We did it?
Speaker 4 (23:41):
Yeah, all right, this one comes from uh Ari. It's soccer.
You run around and chase the ball.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
What do they really learn?
Speaker 5 (23:49):
Number eleven runs faster without the ball than with it.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
Number seventeen, that's a hard time passing with her left foot?
Speaker 3 (23:57):
Soccer?
Speaker 5 (23:57):
Is it rocket science? And that a bunch of emojis?
Speaker 1 (24:00):
They drink yellow Gatorade, Yellow Gatorade.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
We drink orange.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Ma that's the difference. Uh But you want to talk
about a controversy that I know a head coach isn't
up for. It's what's going on right now in Pittsburgh.
Russell Wilson sat out the first day of training camp
with an injury. Was dinged up a little bit and
just a conversation with Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
Not that big a deal.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
We sat Russ out and Justin Fields got all the
reps to tell you that they're not ready for it.
How big of a story was this when it broke
earlier today and Justin Field is doing interviews saying I
got a call at six in the morning saying get
ready for some reps with the ones.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Russ is feeling a little tight.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
He's gonna sit out watching and seeing Mike Tomlin answer
questions about this.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
Following day one.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
Of practice, he was kind of laughing, kind of half
series with I'm not gonna give you guys all kinds
of material and kind of joked around a little bit
by saying, now, well, you know, we'll work Russ back.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
In when he's ready.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
This is one thing, And forget about for a second
that Justin Field is gonna wind up playing by week
five because he's better than Russell Wilson, because Wilson has washed.
But just you know, and I know Mike Tomlin is
not up for this. Mike Tomlin is not up for
what's going to happen. And that is every day being
asked questions about reps. Why did Wilson get these reps,
(25:26):
Why did Fields get these reps? Why did Fields not
get more time at the goal in seven on sevens?
Why didn't he throw the footba? Why did you only
run three running plays. He has not had to deal
with a real quarterback controversy his entire career. Right the
only time he's been changing quarterbacks when there's no pressure,
the team is not playing well, we gotta pick it.
We're gonna go back and forth between him and Mason Rudolph,
(25:48):
and who knows. He's never had to worry about it
because when the team was good, he's at Roethlisberger, there's
no controversy. But now he's gonna deal with something every day,
and you know, Mike Tomlin, he is not up for this.
He is not up for every day being a big
time question, serious questions because this is the only topic
anybody cares about with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is going
to have enough of this in a week. He's gonna
(26:09):
say every day, you're not gonna ask me about this?
Speaker 3 (26:11):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (26:11):
You're not gonna ask me every day every day? We're not, Yeah,
we are, Mike, You're gonna get questions like this every
single day. This is where Pittsburgh bought a bid off
a little bit more than they could chew with this story,
because I don't think they understand just how big a
deal this is. Gonna be Tom and I'm sure thought
Russ is the guy. What are people gonna do? No, No,
you got to understand is how the NFL works. You
decided to make a quarterback controversy by signing Russell Wilson
(26:35):
and then by bringing in Justin Fields. You created this
and he thinks that, oh, I can keep it, and
he is gonna be done with this in a week
before they even play a game. He's gonna be done
with this. And guess what, it's just gonna keep going
all the way through the summer. He is gonna melt down.
He is not gonna he's gonna have enough of this
and this is not going to be a smooth summer.
They bid off more than they could chew with this,
(26:56):
when really, I know how it's gonna end. They're gonna
wind up playing Justin Field's week five. And you can
sit here till you're blue in the face and tell me, oh,
you know he signed Bruss, he's our guy. No, if
Russ was really your guy, you wouldn't have gone out
and got Justin Fields, right, You wouldn't have gone out
and got it.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
You wouldn't have done it. But competitions are healthy. Jason.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
You would not have done it if he really was great,
If he really was great, he was Okay, we got
Russell Wilson. We're not gonna go out and get Justin Fields.
But you said, oh, we got to make our quarterback.
If you were really confident, You're not bringing somebody in
to challenge him. You're bringing somebody in who's a backup.
You're bringing in Gardner Minshew. You're not bringing in Justin Fields,
who's a starter with Chicago and his flash at times
(27:34):
is the best running quarterback in the game.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
We've seen it.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Yes, he's better rushing than Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson's better
throwing the football obviously, but Justin Fields, you've seen what
he can do. This is this was tailor made to
be a controversy and I'm telling you Pittsburgh's not ready
for it. And it's going to be a crazy as
summer for Mike Tomlin because of it.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Yeah, and it'll end up becoming a much bigger deal. Right,
They're still allegedly in the market for one of these
disgruntled wide versus as well, so add that potential level
of chaos to everything as well. You've got George Pickens
fighting with his position coach and coordinator already, Like, we
couldn't have told you that was gonna happen based on
(28:13):
what you've seen in his young NFL career.
Speaker 5 (28:16):
So you got a lot of things.
Speaker 4 (28:17):
Mike Tomblin's got to manage, not to mention, just the
idea that his seat actually got warm a little bit,
at least in the outside world, because it was always
benefit of the doubt. Look at the greatness of Mike Tomlin.
But folks finally had to raise their hands, you know, saying, hey,
being just over five hundred, is that good enough anymore? Right,
(28:37):
because it's a great stat it's a great career, and
take nothing from it. But at some point you're still
trying to win Super Bowls, right, And so by bringing
in Russell Wilson, by bringing in Justin Fields, the expectation is,
all right, we've now vastly improved our quarterback room. But
in theory, you should have been able to do that
with one guy instead of two. Right the old if
you have two starting quarterbacks, you don't have one kind
(29:00):
of situational thing like you're Mac Brown going back to
Texas and here's Major Applewhite and Chris sim's getting ready
to battle it out. I mean, generally does work right,
Eventually there's unrest and chaos. And when you've got a
guy like Tomlin who's a straight shooter, yeah, it's gonna
make for a fun preseason. I just went on Amazon
and I bought myself a giant thing of microwavable popcorn because.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
Every day I'm gonna wait for him to meet with
the press.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Oh, he's gonna get so sick and tired of it,
and it's gonna be how long to the regular season, Mike,
We've had two days of training, catch Jason, come on.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
Really, come on.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
I'll tell you when I used to do the training
camp tour when I lived on the East Coast years ago,
and Tom Loin had those squads that were you know,
early Roethlisberger, and you got the bus and you got
you know, all these guys run around. Willie Parker comes
onto the scene, the receivers, Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace whatever.
Speaker 5 (29:53):
So you know, some high times.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
I got that look at least three times asking questions,
So I know all those guys they're already ready for
that stare of don't ask me that again.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
What a high temperature.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
It's gonna be in Pittsburgh already hot and human there.
It's gonna be one hundred and seventy five degrees in
those Mike Tomlin interview rooms.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Mike, U just real quick on Justin Today.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
He was four for seven and seven on SEVENS. Russ
was three for eight and he thought in getting him
more reps with the ones. What's going on? No, Tomlin's
using his Darth Vader force powers to choke that guy.
It's not that question for being asked. Oh tell you,
August is gonna be outstanding. The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon Live from the Tiraq dot com Studios, coming
(30:41):
up next after News Today, Without a doubt the quarterback
I am most nervous about this season in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
Who is it Aaron rod next?
Speaker 6 (30:51):
This?
Speaker 1 (30:51):
No, I'm even more nervous about this guy than Aaron rodgs.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
Wow, that's next. Fox.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon
Live from the tire rack dot Com Studios, And I'll
tell you every year. I feel like every year there's
one quarterback I'm more nervous about than any other one.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
Whether it is.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Whether it's talent wise, whether it's him falling off the cliff,
whether it's health wise.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
Guys that I just go and I go.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
Boy, I just don't know about him this year. And
the guy this year is Anthony Richardson. Really, Colts came
out today and they said, look, we're not going to
restrict Anton Richardson's running next season, which is great, right.
We want Anthony richard to be the guy that he is.
It's what makes him a great quarterback.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
But wow, as talented as he is, this guy couldn't
make it through five games last year. I mean, I
just don't know that that he can make it for
a whole season. Like he plays very recklessly. His injuries
that he had a couple of injuries. You think after
the first one he would get it, he would learn
a little bit and say, Okay, I'm not gonna go
(32:15):
crazy and try to get in the end zone and
try to make crazy by But he didn't, and he
wound up missing the vast majority of his rookie year
and missing all kinds of reps and when you get
hurt badly twice in the first five games. I know
that he's raw, and I know that he needs some time,
but look, you give him the job right away, and
(32:36):
clearly on the field he has shown he can do it.
He's one of those guys that heats up in a minute.
He could have a quarter where it would look like, boy,
this team is terrible and the culture gonna get shut out.
They're losing twenty one nothing man, and after five minutes
it's hey, it's twenty one to twenty and he's run.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
For two touchdowns and thrown for one.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
I mean, he's that talented, but wow, I really don't
know about him staying healthy. It really concerned me he
couldn't make it past five games last year. Is he
really going to change his style that you know they've
Goltz have said, hey, we keep running, keep.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Running, keep running. And I know that he's big.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
I know he's kind of like Cam Newton in that aspect,
but he's got to be able to protect himself. And
last year was just so scary for me. In five games,
I don't know that I can try. How long do
you really think he's going to be quarterback for can
you trust these guy who's gonna be healthy all season long?
Can he trust he's gonna be round after six games?
Like he's the guy that makes me more nervous about
(33:30):
playing a whole season becoming a star than anybody else,
because I just don't know if he's gonna be able
to handle it.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Four games, twenty five carries the one hundred and thirty
six yards, four touchdowns. So in theory, you go back
to the well and you say, okay, red zone efficiency, well,
we need Taylor, we need Trey sermon, if that's the guy,
whoever it is, we need to be better. We need
to be better about quick passes and keeping him from
(33:58):
getting hurt two forty four. It's tempting, right, but that's
part of what makes it him him, right, he is
him when he's on the heater. As you say, you
look at Pittman, you bring in ad Nai Mitchell, you
got Josh Downs, you got pretty good receiving corps.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
You have a really good receiver or these guys maybe
even see the football.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Good young receiving card. Well, but here's the thing, what
did they do as a backup? It's Joe Flacco time
if things go to hell in Indianapolis. You know, so
the team as a whole, we watched how Cleveland was
able to rally around Joe Flacco to where for a
couple of weeks we once again debated whether he was
in fact elite. No, Richardson's a guy, very great anticipation
(34:44):
to see him back on the field and how he's utilized.
But you know, like we've talked about with so many
quarterbacks where their legs are a big part of what
makes them so dangerous, being able to deliver the ball
on the run, whether it's Josh Allen, whether it's lamar Ja,
keep on going down the line. You can't take that
away from him. Hey, you know what, we're gonna put
(35:05):
the cones up and you're gonna be restricted here. Yeah,
but he's just got to be smart about getting down
and learning how to do the Peyton manning. He's got
to go to the old Colts Pro you know that
turtle move that he used to do up heats on me,
like those toys where you press the button and their
legs collapse. That's what Anthony Richardson needs to do here.
Right for another day.
Speaker 1 (35:24):
How many guys can how many guys can do that.
Speaker 9 (35:27):
It's it's it's very difficult and and and what what
made me feel good about him coming into the draft was, Okay,
he's fast and he is a load, right, Like he's
Cam Newton, Like, you know, Cam can can take on
tackles because he's bigger than a lot of the D shirts.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
He's gonna face of course, you know, not weighing about
a lot of them by thirty forty pounds. Yeah, and
look at the smaller guys, right, they can't do it, right, guy,
the dual threat quarterbacks that come in, they can't do it.
He's bigger, but he's a bigger guy. And he still
had two big injuries and got knocked out Week four,
Like it like is he has he's gonna have enough
football to understand when to go down when to not
(36:03):
because he's not gonna play in preseason games. He's gonna
hit the field for the first time opening week. And
has he learned enough? I mean that's I mean, like
I'm nervous that that he's gonna be someone that we're
gonna see this happen to him again, because I don't
know that he's had enough reps or had enough football
to say, all right, I get what it is now
to protect myself. He didn't have a lot of football
in college. The guy hasn't had a lot of football.
(36:25):
He's incredibly talented, but man, I'm nervous he is. How
nervous I have him in dynasty leagues, A couple of
dynasty leagues, and I'm saying, I gotta get another quarterback.
I gotta get another quarterback because I don't know how
healthy he's gonna be over the course of this season,
how long he's gonna know.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
But that's the thing, right when when you have that
level of in your game, the risk quotion goes up
and there's no question about it. So yeah, Dynasty League,
get to work.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
Exit out about a Fresco exit swallen down the Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike carm.
Speaker 5 (36:57):
And that's why you have Flacco from the Tire.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Rack doc ob Studious.
Speaker 1 (37:00):
Oh we could do it again. Flack has become the
modern day Vinnie Testa Verdi. Ah, I'm just getting gonna
play until he'st fifty throwing a deep ball.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
Coming up next, we got Rick Buker on everything Olympic hoops,
Keep it here this is Fox,
