Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome inside final hour tonight, the Jason Smith Show
with my bass friend Mike Harmon, Live from the tirech
dot Com studios tyreck dot com.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
I'll hope you get there.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
An unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road HAZD protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tiraq dot com is
the way tire buying should be. Well, I'll tell you, Mike,
this is the second time that I've watched the opening
ceremonies to the Olympics, because it's been.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
On the entire time, on the air the entire time.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
Are you hoping some of the stuff changes.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
You, dude, I'm hoping that it was due to time constraints.
You move ahead in the boat. Parid from Leechtenstein to
Zambia like, hey, hey, hey, you can't.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
Erase all those nations.

Speaker 5 (01:14):
Do you have more than twenty four hours in a day?

Speaker 4 (01:17):
What do you mean?

Speaker 3 (01:17):
How do I have more? I have time?

Speaker 5 (01:18):
I mean you watched Undisputed okay, cool and the Olympic
ceremonies twice.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Yeah, well, well the Olympic Ceremonies the first time during
the day before I went to Deadpool.

Speaker 5 (01:28):
I mean, that's like twenty hours.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
It's a lot.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
It's a dude, it's a lot. I fit a lot
in the day. Man, I'm like the army. I get
more done in twenty four hours, and most people get.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Done in a week. I don't know that's the saying,
but but that's why I saying no, it was.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
More by nine am than most people. Do you know
what the saying is? You idiot?

Speaker 1 (01:46):
I was making a joke, even I don't know that saying,
of course made everybody else.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
That's saying everybody you forgot. You're staying up so much
to try to get everything done that maybe you're just
overtired and your synapses word fire. You forgot the quote.
So I tried to help you out. Best friend, you
call me an idiot on a Friday night, I'm gonna
swinging net break or your ass do this on a
Friday night.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
I touched my drum set. Everybody, it's very nice. Happy
sixteenth dinniversary step brothers.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Uh, look, this is just it was just too long.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Like you you have to you know what we talk
about the Olympics being a tell everything's a television show.
Don't forget whatever you're doing. It's a television show. And
you can tell me what I need to know about France.
You can fit that in three hours. You can give
me the cliff Notes version of What's the What's the
the Thomas Guide? Right if you're traveling when you're I mean.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
You can give me.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
You can tell me everything you need to know and
give me pageantry about France and give me the opening
to the Olympics. You can give it to me in
a tight three hours. Mike Tarrico can explain that to
me in three hours because the stuff I'm just gonna forget.
But for the next couple of weeks I want to
know it. But instead, this is a this is it's
still going the it started when we went on the

(03:02):
air three hours ago, and it's there's no sign of
it ending because I know where we are because I
watched it earlier today. We still have another hour plus
there's eleven people that have to get the torch. It's
like watching this earlier today and watching it now, I'm like,
this is just the greatest background fodder in the world.
I'm gonna tune out, tune back. You know, I haven't
missed anything. There's still on. It's like a soap opera.

(03:23):
Like you can turn on a soap opera and and
and not tune in for like a month and go, oh,
I haven't missed anything. Everything is still going on. Alan
Michael still hates his dad, and here's all this. Okay,
I get it. Reva and Josh are not together and
I'm throwing around guiding like people, Okay, I understand what's
happening right now. But this was this was just painful.
It went from really interesting and it was fun. And

(03:46):
some of the things, like you saw that that French
heavy metal band that was playing, like wow, that was weird.

Speaker 6 (03:50):
Cool.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah, yeah, that was cool. The Marie Antoinette stuff was cool.
And the horse shows up and I'm like, oh, this
is gonna be great. The horse with the apocalypse, Yes,
and then it.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
Was thirty five minutes of that horse.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
It was like that. I don't think Hidalgo was on.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
Screen that much when that would with a horse, they
should have just taken an hour of lay miz Oh.
I thought, get that at some point, Russell Crowe.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
I thought we were gonna get that.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
I thought we were gonna see Hugh Jackman lighting the
candle and then ripping off his lay Miss costume to
be Wolverine saying dead. Pulling Wolverine opens today. It was
so long, and I'm like, you gotta be kidding me. Man,
you gotta be able to say, this is a TV
show that I get, but you want to watch, And
you got to tell me in three hours the story
of France and the Olympics and all these athletes. You

(04:34):
can do it in three hours. There's limited commercial interruptions.
You're not going to break every five seconds. It's not
an hour long drama. Okay, that's great, and you can
see all the countries come through. That's awesome. But man,
you you've had time. You've had four years, You've had
years to figure you've had eight years to figure this
thing out. No, no, no, let's jam in all these different
things instead of some things that we can get going

(04:55):
on with the week, because there's no reason why we
can't have some of this stuff during the week as well. No,
we're gonna get everything we possibly can show you.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
And at some.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Point it just becomes it just becomes noise and it's
just what's on television. I'm like, yeah, I'm not even
paying attention anymore. I really, it's just it's it's so
you got. You gotta give me some kind of lot
and some kind of non Zack Snyder cut of the
opening ceremonies of the Olympics, something that's more palatable. I
get that we're used to longer run times now, wink wink,

(05:24):
you'll see the movie, you'll get it. I get that
we're longer, we're in on longer run times now.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
But this is just way over the top. Man, It's
just too over the top.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
Two four six. So one look, there's so many pieces
to this, uh, some strange, uh, some curious, some that
have sparked a lot of outrage and conversation. Uh. But
you know, to your point about the commercials, I want
to know who negotiated, because good job by all the
people that bought airtime was when they did actually have

(05:52):
an ad, it had about seventy percent of the screen
to the coverage of me. You know, is this a
nation he wants to see? No? All right, it was
like the OJ chase in the NBA finals all those
years ago. All right, here's the ad in the larger box,
and yeah, you could see a boat. You have no
idea who's on it. That's part of the mystery. They

(06:15):
don't matter what. And we'll get back to it in
a moment because it is the US coverage of said
Olympic event. But yeah, it just kept going on and on.
Like I went and saw the early showing a deadpool,
so it was ten o'clock. I got back to the
house and put it on, you know, start from the
beginning at about twelve thirty, and it just kept going.

(06:38):
And it's like, all right, fast forward. That guy's got
to move a little faster. All right, Who the hell's
he giving it to? And where are they going? Tariko
actually saying that multiple times. I'm really not sure the
direction of where it's headed now, So we'll see who
the next And you can tell they're trying to go
to their notes. Is that the guy that they say
is next to get the torch. I'm not sure so well,

(07:00):
a bit of confusion in that regard as well, And
I don't put that on the the NBC broadcast. I
put that on the organization. Uh thereof but ultimately some
great sights. Celine Dion, you had light Lady Gaga at
the start, followed directly by a Joker two commercial, So
I mean it was all good because that was the

(07:23):
one commercial that you didn't get a boat or anything. Yeah,
still in it was still in the pregame part of it.
So you got all right, yeah, hey, and Lady Gaga
coming to you later this fall.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Oh yeah, that's right, Joe.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Here's Joker Too, which the trailer, the trailer before Deadpool
and Wolverine, which both you and I saw today.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
I'm saying, wow.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
And I thought the first one looked depressing and it
was we need another one.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Really. I can't. I can't get over the popular when
you're smiling.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
And I can't get over the popularity of this movie
and the people. First of all, every time Joaquin Phoenix laughs,
it looks forced. It doesn't look like he has a
can edition of any kind. It's just like he's just
forcing the laughter. And it's just so unbelievably depressing, and
it's depressed, and it's depressing to a point where it's like,
what are you rooting for? Are you rooting for him?

(08:12):
He's a bad guy. I'm rooting for the movie to end.
That's what I was rooting for in the first one.
I'm rooting for the movie to be over. So I
have to see it again. And that trailer came out
and I looked at him and I said, we're not
seeing that right. She goes, no, no, I'm done. I said, good, Okay,
they got my money that first time around. And I
said to myself, Wow, this is the most depressing movie
I've ever seen.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
But it's The Joker.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Yeah, okay, okay, dude, more depressing, dude. At least it
did Jets give you a different kind of depressing. I
don't know what kind of depressing they're gonna give me.
I know the depressing The Joker is gonna gets going
to happen for.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Well.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
At least there was dancing in The Joker. He did
dance on the steps, so there is I.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
Mean, there looks to be a little bit of dancing.
There's gonna be a lot of music in this one, Well, Rogers.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Brought the flag out.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
I don't know, Rogers bringing the flag out, the Joker
dancing on the steps.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
I mean, that's not quite a push though.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah, No, I mean I was.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
I was much more excited at Rogers with the flag
than I was the Joker. No, I wasn't, really, I
was like, I knew in the first three minutes I'm
watching this, going this is terrible. And there's people that
are gonna say this is art and it's so unbelievably good,
and I'm like, how do you want how do you
walk away from this thinking this is actually entertaining act?

Speaker 3 (09:26):
This is just different.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
There's good act, yeah, but there's good acting, but it's
gotta be a good story. It's gotta be something that
is not just Hey, we're gonna we're gonna give you
a downer for the next two hours, and you got
to sit there and take it. There's not gonna be
a lot of excitement. There's gonna be a lot of angst.
You're gonna want to get up and leave. But now
that's what we're gonna give you for two hours.

Speaker 4 (09:44):
That just proves to me, you you haven't seen half
the movies in the last five years that you claim
you have or television. No, no, no, that's all that's been. No, no, no,
there's movie.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
If I see something depressed, it's as.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Man, I'm not gonna watch it.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
Oh dude, you want a really good story from yes,
from from early lunch, earlier today.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
You want a good story.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
So Pam and I go to lunch and we go
to just our neighborhood diner around the corner, and we're
sitting there and we're actually talking.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
We're talking about.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
Yet d and we're actually talking about Benson because they
have on in the diner, like Nickelodeon or something, and
they're playing all these rooms and they're playing Benson. So
Pam and I, of course, who grew up We both
loved Benson, remembering the showgain, Okay, what was this person again?
And Rene and bougienor was he in the first season? No,
what happened to Missy Gold? She was only in this

(10:32):
And this is the conversation we're having for the entire
time we're having.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
Lunch like that.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Yeah, that's we were talking about Robert Yom and everything
else and Benson and all, okay, that's great, that's great.
And at the end, the guy next to us goes, hey, so, uh,
you guys are TV buffs huh And we just.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
Go uh kind of.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
And I'm like, oh, this guy's been listening to our
entire conversation apparently, and he goes, hey, uh, just so
you know, and he says the name You ever heard
of this guy? And and and I go, oh, I'm sorry,
know who? I look him up and he says that.
He says, he says, you ever heard of this guy?
Says his name and goes, no, sh I look it up.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
He goes check it.

Speaker 4 (11:06):
Look, he's in Joker Too.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
And he and the guy that gets up and walks out,
and I get on the phone and I look up
this guy on IMDb and it's him.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Wo wow that I thought you said he was gonna
make an Anga Swinson reference and said talked about her
on the radio show. I know.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
He's like, oh my god.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
He said it was him, like he just he just
listened to her condo. Was told us he was in
Joker Too. Yeah, his name was. I don't know that
he's got a big part, but I'll find it and
tell you if I see now I kind of maybe had.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
It was not Brendan Glees No, no, no, but but the
fact that he's in it, I'm a big yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
But he plays mad Eye Moody. You know what's gonna
happen to him?

Speaker 1 (11:48):
You know, Barti Crouch is gonna take over his body
and take all the polyjuice potion.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
Wow. Spoiler alert, it wasn't Steve Coogan, that was not
Stephen Michael.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
Kaine speaks through his nose like he's very spipps. So
this weekend now and again, I'll find that out. I'll
find the guys got up it. He did a drop
the mic and walked out, And that's pretty good. He
listened to our entire conversation about that about Benson.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Just waiting to pump his career. I love that. So
Los Angeles right there, so's a joker to this guy.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
The two big sporting events this weekend in the Olympics.
We have USA women's soccer coming up on Sunday against Germany,
a powerhouse game, and the US men's national team gets
it going against Serbia on Sunday, basketball team quest for
a gold medal. The will preview both of these things.

(12:44):
We'll tell you who's gonna win USA Germany and more importantly,
we'll tell you exactly why USA basketball struggles against international
competition as much as it does.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
And here's a hint.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
It's not the other nations have caught up to us.
The nation j the reason you've heard for the last
twenty years, Oh, they're catching gut. It's not about that.

Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with Ma my
best friend Mike Carmen. I'll tell you is Alex Eischer
through the Fire one of my favorite songs of all time?
I agree, Oh man, it's just so good. And jump
in the fire anything do do Do.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
Do Do Do Do Do Do Do do do.

Speaker 4 (15:15):
Do do do do do do do do.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
Just that release too, I think it was I'm pretty
sure it was.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
Uh was what was it was? Hang on a jumping
the fire was hang on? So seventeen twenties to thirty seven?

Speaker 5 (15:30):
I think it was like forty two years.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
Shut up, I'm pretty sure it was thirty seven years.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
Man, that's insane.

Speaker 5 (15:35):
Way do outdate yourself?

Speaker 4 (15:37):
Oh boy, wow, tight shirt? Found that fast.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
These are what all Metallica songs are like nine minutes.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
Long, just kept going. How long is this song eight
and a half minutes?

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Oh okay, all right?

Speaker 4 (15:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (15:50):
They were built for pirate radio.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, how long did they how many times they say
jump in the fire, like one hundred times.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
You just keep saying it.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Jump in the fire.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
By the way, you go watch Pirate Radio if you
haven't seen it. Great movie, Philip Seymour Hoffman, that's the count.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
Well and hey, speaking of music, without giving anything away,
if you've seen the movie, you understand some of the
songs we've played tonight without referencing them have been from
Deadpool and Wolverine. I was also a big fan of
the music. The music and Deadpool and Wolverine was was
really really good. Again, there was a lot to like
in this movie. It was so much fun. It was funny.

(16:28):
They're great together. Their chemistry is It's exactly what you'd
expect from a Deadpool movie. Probably the funniest of all
the Deadpool movies. Yea, and the cameos were out of
this world. But man, I'll tell you what this story was.
The story was just like, oh, come on, man, really, really,
this is what you're giving me. This is the story
I assume in the first five minutes when I thought,

(16:50):
oh wow, okay, alright, all right, okay, okay, you know what,
I don't care. I'm just gonna enjoy what's on the screen.
That's what I did and was really really enjoyable.

Speaker 4 (17:01):
It was the perfect popcorn movie. Might have been the
first time that we actually went back to the front
desk with the Stubbs plus you know, membership and said,
I'd like a refill on my popcorn.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Oh very good? Wow, nice?

Speaker 4 (17:17):
You rot full on into it.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
You rob Parkerd it right, and you went back for no, no, no,
but but that, but that, but that free and it
was it was.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
It was in the same the same visit as opposed
to leaving a building, walking down the street several hours
later and refilling. Well, we gotta make sure we get
those things straight there or a.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
Couple of days later, I still got that pop I'm
gonna go get a reef.

Speaker 4 (17:42):
Hey, the plastic didn't dissolve or have any issues, so
I'm going back.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
I just made sure.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harbon Live from the
Tirac dot Com Studios. I know, I was a big
fit dead. I was looking forward to the movie for
a long time. It was really good. It was fun.
Like I just said, this story is just like okay, okay,
you know, but you enjoyed.

Speaker 4 (18:02):
The two of them together. How much of it was
improved I'd like to know as to what they kept
in the other is you know, you almost want to
sit there with the notebook because there's about nine billion references.
It's kind of like listening to our show each night,
uh that there's gonna be a lot of stuff where
you just write down a little note going, I don't
really know that. I get the context and I can

(18:23):
make it out. But yeah, we want you in.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
Yeah, because because you laugh at one and then you
miss the next joke, it's like that's gonna bean repeated,
Like I want to see it again because I want
to see the jokes that I missed the first time
around that and.

Speaker 4 (18:37):
I'm trying to effort to get Jackman on. I will
get a reunion. I haven't. I haven't talked to him
in years.

Speaker 5 (18:44):
Hate Smith.

Speaker 4 (18:45):
Does he yeah?

Speaker 5 (18:48):
That his movie?

Speaker 3 (18:49):
That is it? What I mean spoil? What did I say?
What have I said bad about it? I haven't spoiled anything, just.

Speaker 5 (18:53):
Said the story sucks. Ye, story sucks.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
I think he would tell you the same thing. I
think that the story is what it is. The story,
I mean, really, the story is.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
What it is. It's wailed it.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Oh, come on, man, what you don't know anything. What
I'm saying I'm telling your story is not great. But
I told you to go see it because it's because
it's that funny. The acting is that good, The action
is great. It's a dead Pool and the cameos are fantastic.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
They were No I can tell.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
You who they were. You stayed off of social media,
otherwise you would have learned them all.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Yeah, yeah, and then you know, and some of them,
I can't believe they did such a good job keeping
them quiet. Like some of you think at some point
that would just blow up and say, oh boy, this
is you know this we found out so and so
is going to be in it. But if you're able
to stay, if you're able to stay away and not
you know, seek stuff out, you were able to stay away.

Speaker 5 (19:44):
From well, Grimace doesn't talk, so that was easy.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Well it's a wow way. Grima saves everybody at the end.
You think you think Deadpool and Wolverine. No, no, no, Grimace
comes in with a shake and saves everybody. Is always
lurking in the background. Doctor re assumption, you just have
to make going forward in all superhero movies, that somewhere,
even if he's never seen on screen, Grimace is there
in a support role. He hangs over everything, like when

(20:08):
Voldemort wasn't in the Harry Potter movies, but he just
hung over the entire.

Speaker 4 (20:12):
Movie because you knew he was there. There, He's out somewhere.
Grimace is coming. It's coming.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
So we have two big time Olympic events this weekend
that everybody's going to put their schedules around. We got
the women playing Germany in a huge game in group
in women's soccer on Sunday, and then you have men's
basketball starting Sunday against Serbia.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Let's deal. Let's talk about the women's soccer team first.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Coming off the win over Zambia, which again kind of
a B type game, they were extremely dominant in the
first half and they kind of just sat back. This
is a game they should have won six to seven nothing,
and they really.

Speaker 4 (20:55):
Don't. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
I don't like the way that they were so passive.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
Yes, they put substitutes in, but Zambia is playing with
ten players, all right, this is a team you should
have rolled over anyway, and they're playing with ten and
you can't score a goal when they're playing sixty minutes
for sixty men comelall. I mean, that's ridiculous. Now, all
that being said and Germany being a really good team,
I'm gonna say United States beats Germany on Sunday two

(21:22):
to one because the United States counterattack is really powerful.
And Mallory Swanson, I've talked about her being the difference.
I gotta put my money where my mouth is. I said,
if we're winning the gold medal, it's gonna be because
Mallory Swanson dens the back of the net. She scores
at least once on Sunday, and that's the difference in
the United States beats Germany, and all of a sudden,

(21:43):
all that good feeling really is legitimate, because a good
feeling right now is just yeah, okay, it's good that
you feel confident, but the good feeling is hey, the
tournament really starts on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (21:53):
Right.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
You played a team you were supposed to beat and
crutch and you did. Okay, that's great.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
This is the first big test for Emma Hayes as
the coach, and she has had a lot of time,
but so far, look, you like the results what you've
seen so far.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
Sunday's the big test.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
United States passes Mallory Swanson's the difference they went to
to one.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
Look at you. I want to be that optimistic, but
I think it comes down to our inability to execute
on set pieces. So is that the implied odds of
a thirty five draw one one? Your final? Wow? Look
at you?

Speaker 1 (22:25):
You Okay, they're on the middle of the fence picking
a draw you Okay, they're picking a toime. No, I
think it's gonna be just don't well, I'm picking a toime.

Speaker 4 (22:31):
Look, you just went full us because you know you
you don't like Montgomery Burns. You don't want the Germans
to be mad at you.

Speaker 3 (22:39):
I'm gonna pick a tie.

Speaker 1 (22:40):
Then everybody will love me if I pick a tie,
won't they I'm gonna pick a time.

Speaker 4 (22:44):
Say zero zero. I'm not gonna say they're zero. No,
I don't. I don't think they lose because I think
defensively they they play well enough, but I don't think
they're able to to dent the net. Uh that frequently.
I love the front line, right, I mean, look Sophia Smith, Swanson, Rodman.
I mean they're elect electric upfront. H Germany plays strong defensively,

(23:05):
so I think it gets played near midfield, and we
don't get a lot of a lot of deep, great opportunities.

Speaker 1 (23:13):
No, I see through you. Mallory Swanson married to who
Dansby Swanson? Who does he play for? The Cubs?

Speaker 3 (23:21):
Who do you hate more than anybody else? The Cubs?
I see through it. I see through it. I just
saw it.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
I really thought I could get away with some student
analysis of game theory, et cetera. But you saw it
through me. You saw through the shrade. Look right now,
I hate my own team more than anything. Okay, Like
it's not even fun. Like when Steve Stone at the
end of one inning just goes well, unfortunately you don't
get any due overs. It's gonna be a long night.

(23:48):
Let's settle in, right. I mean that he basically threw
up the through the damn towel at the first in
giving up those eight runs, Like where we're not even
through July and it's that part of the season. Well,
what's on TV tonight? Once we're done? What do we
get to watch? What's on the TV? Or cozy?

Speaker 1 (24:09):
Look, dude, you're tanking for Ethan Holiday, right, I mean
you're tanking for Matt Holliday's other.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
Kid, right there? So you're doing right now, you're taking
for him.

Speaker 4 (24:17):
That's all you need, right, Yeah, that that's we're tanking
in a baseball draft. And it's because that works out
all the time for number one picks. One of the
greatest insert sets Tops ever did was a tribute to
the number one picks. Well, you had guys like Sean Abner,

(24:39):
you know, he got on he got my guy, you know, uh,
you know Harold Baynes that gets to show up in there,
going all the way back to nineteen seventy seven. But
like the number of guys like that guy never made
it up the minor leads. Why did they do this
insert set? There's so few hits. What are we doing?

Speaker 3 (24:58):
Oh that's the best.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
But just think Matt Holliday, Jackson Holiday, Ethano, you're good man.

Speaker 4 (25:04):
You're good.

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Let's go sure, fright, that's all you need now.

Speaker 4 (25:07):
That will solve everything him.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
We're gonna start. We're gonna win one hundred and ten
games next year.

Speaker 4 (25:15):
It's gonna be great, that one guy. Uh.

Speaker 1 (25:18):
But when you get to the men's on Sunday and
Team USA and their first game that counts after a
very underwhelming Olympic prep season, right, why do we struggle. Right,
we should win the gold medal. It should be something
we roll to. We have twelve of the best players
in the world. But we struggle, and we're struggling way

(25:40):
more now than we ever have.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
You know, we.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
Almost lost to South su Dan despite having Lebron had
to rescue us at the end. He's rescued us the
last couple of games. Why do we struggle? Why does
this happen? You've heard the same answer for twenty years
while the other countries have caught up to us. Yeah,
of course, the other countries are getting better. I think
we know that. We've seen guys like and Jokic come over. Yes,
we know, Yes, other countries are getting better.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
How many of the top ten players are not from
the US?

Speaker 7 (26:07):
Go?

Speaker 1 (26:07):
Yeah, but still all that that's the only player like
It's okay, Well who else does y'all get?

Speaker 4 (26:12):
You have?

Speaker 1 (26:12):
Well, not a lot of hell yea, okay, we still
have the best roster by far of anybody.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
Why do we struggle? It's not because other teams are good.

Speaker 1 (26:21):
Yes, other teams got better, But our players are getting
better too, right, I mean our players are.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
Getting This is just how it goes.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
It's not suddenly that, Okay, well, we other divis are
caught up to us. No, FOBA basketball, Olympic basketball is different.
And the three biggest differences are it's a shorter game,
it's a faster paced game, and threes are of the premium.
Everybody shoots threes. It's up and down, it's a racetrack,

(26:50):
and it's not quite the basketball that the United States.

Speaker 4 (26:53):
Is used to.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
For those three reasons, these NBA stars are not used
to that faster pace. They're not used to the shorter game.
They're not used to to everybody taking threes as often
as they do.

Speaker 3 (27:03):
They're used to a different game.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
And so what happens is all these other teams that
have had more time to stay together and practice, Hey,
they're at a higher level. Right We're at the point
where we're out talenting teams. We just have more talent.
We have better players, and that's what's winning for us.
But we struggle because now the game is a little
bit too different for us. And you look at a

(27:26):
guy like Joel Embiid, who's one of the best players
in the NBA the last twenty years, and he is
so ill suited for international basketball because his game is
give me the ball on the block and I'll either
on one leg, I'll get to the hoop, or I'll
get to the free throw line. And that doesn't do
it in international basketball, right, there's too many shots that
go up. You can't win games like that. So the

(27:47):
players we have, yeah, they're not quite suited. But more
importantly is that it takes too long or we don't
have enough time at the combination of both, because you'd
like to see teams being able to practice together more,
but we don't have enough time. And Steve Kurr specifically
doesn't have enough time to set his rotation and know
who he's going to play. Because a lot of it

(28:07):
is politics, because are you really gonna not play Lebron
and Steph and KD and Embiid if they're too old
and they can't go up and down the floor, Because
that's what you're gonna see, is guys really out of
breath because you gotta defend. Right, it's nice to have
one Drew Holiday on the court, but guess what other
guys are gonna take threes. It's gonna be a whole
thing around the arc for us. So it's politics because yeah,

(28:28):
these are the best guys they've been the best players
they should play, but the best players might not be
those four, and you need time.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
To say, all right, these are our guys. These are
the guys I know that can play this pace and
can defend and get the sense of urgency. So they're
gonna play thirty minutes of the forty minutes. The other
guys are gonna come off the bench and play as
much as they can. And Lebron's gonna give me an
energetic ten minutes and KD will give me an energetic
ten minutes.

Speaker 1 (28:54):
And that's how it's gonna go. But it's hard because hey,
whoa the egos of these guys and you got to
go back coach in the NBA, and then all of
a sudden the politics get out of control and players
are talking about you, talking about Steve Kerr and Steve Kerr.

Speaker 4 (29:08):
It becomes a whole thing.

Speaker 1 (29:10):
So if that was able to be solved a little
bit more, then the United States we'd be back to
beating everybody by twenty twenty five points because we'd know
the right players to play, we'd have the rotation going in,
we'd know what our team is going to be, and
we'd wind up playing better because of it, but because
we're still trying to figure things out.

Speaker 3 (29:27):
Like, look, we had Rick.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
Buker on the show the other night and he said,
what's gonna happen if if Steve Kerr finds out his
best five are Ad Jason Tatum and Derek White and
bam Adebio and Drew Holliday and Ad?

Speaker 3 (29:40):
Right, Like, what if that's the best five to win?

Speaker 4 (29:42):
Right?

Speaker 3 (29:42):
I mean?

Speaker 1 (29:43):
And I said, you're looking at those guys on the
bench that I just mentioned. Can you really have that happen?
Like how long is he gonna take to find his
best guys? Are we gonna be into the metal round?
And at that point we're playing teams that are playing
it at a high level because they've all played together.
Like if there was some way for the United States
to amp up that that choice process and be much
more definitive with this is who's going to work, This

(30:05):
is gonna work in the system, This is who is
best suited to international basketball. Yes, you would brew some egos,
but it would be a better team. And until that
can happen, then we're gonna wind up struggling like this
just because the game is so different and as time
has gone on, the players in the NBA have gotten
further away from it than they were the very beginning
with the Dream Team, with the with the advent of

(30:27):
the three and the pace of the play, right, the
NBA has gone one way and and international basketball has
gone the other.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
Yeah. I mean you see the opponents, right, Chris passing
around the perimeter, getting an open shot, running and keeping pace.
Three point shots ubiquitous, thanks Steph Curry, member of this squad.
And this is the generation you're playing against alongside you there,
and you know NBA teams, you got a lot of
two man ball, right, So without the continuity of playing

(30:58):
together and the extra passes, I mean, how many have
we just seen errant? Hey? I think the guys get
into this spotnight and get that spot and the ball's
sailing into the crowd, right, I mean the turnover totals
have been disastrous time and again. Twelve and a half
point favorites over Serbia in this one. I'll take a
push at twelve and a half.

Speaker 3 (31:20):
You're gonna get a push.

Speaker 4 (31:21):
See, I can run jokes too, tough guy. One hundred
and eighty point five is your total.

Speaker 3 (31:28):
So that you want to know why the United States struggles.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
That's why watch the game Sunday and see that the pace,
the threes, and the shortness of the game and the
sense of urgency, that's what's gonna give the United States trouble.

Speaker 4 (31:40):
You know, if Steve Kerr wants to give the gift
to sports talk radio and TV, he does exactly that.
All of those guys, Lebron and all those guys are
sitting out in the final minutes, and.

Speaker 1 (31:48):
How Steve, how powerful would that video be of of
the four of those guys just together on the bench going.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
What the hell? Man?

Speaker 4 (31:57):
Keep the camera on them.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
Right now?

Speaker 1 (32:02):
A guy who also struggles with shortness of the game,
making threes and ding it up.

Speaker 4 (32:08):
It's Steve de Seger.

Speaker 3 (32:09):
But his strength is what's trending. He's got that now
in the wide world sport.

Speaker 8 (32:13):
We'll get to the schedule in a moment. But for
those negative Nelli's who thinks the Olympic opening ceremony accomplish
nothing in Paris today, Marie Antoinette is trending.

Speaker 4 (32:22):
So there's that maybe some history less there. She's still dead, right,
She's still dead, mariee.

Speaker 3 (32:27):
But that's the theory.

Speaker 5 (32:28):
Well, put it this way, if she's not. We've got
a story for many reasons, like.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
If that was her actually singing, that's pretty, that's sthish.

Speaker 8 (32:36):
There you go in the rain, on the river send,
not in a stadium. We had the formal opening of
the Paris Olympics today for US men's basketball, The Olympic
tournament starts this Sunday against Serbia. Kevin Durant finally practiced
with Team USA a week ago. He'd been out for
a couple of weeks with a strayed calf, but he
did miss all five exhibitions. The US went five to
oh including in London last Monday, a close win for

(32:58):
the US men against Germany ninety two eighty eight as
Lebron James scored the last eleven points there. Last weekend
a one point win for the US men over South
Sudan on a late layup by Lebron James. Sunday, US
women's soccer faces Germany. Each team won its tournament opener
three to nothing. Sophia Smith of the US left in
the first half Thursday with an apparent ankle injury. The

(33:20):
women's basketball Olympic Tournament starts for the Americans on Monday
against Japan for the record. The US women since nineteen
eighty four in the Olympics have a record of sixty
nine to one. This year's US women's team lost its
sendoff game last weekend against a team of WNBA Stars.
The WNBA is off for about a month. NASCAR's Cup
Series is off for two weeks due to the Olympics.

(33:42):
NWSL soccer is off, but today Gotham FC signed back
Witham who turns fourteen tomorrow. The Denver Nuggets signed Russell
Westbrook one year plus a player option for the minimum.
John Rahm leads the livegolf event in the UK by
two strokes after a first round sixty three to baseball
all ten inning wins for Washington and Cincinnati. The late

(34:03):
game at San Francisco went to the Giants eleven to
four over Colorado, Tyler Fitzgerald with two more homers, Oakland
and Arizona with victories. Houston shut out the Dodgers five nothing.
LA first baseman Freddie Freeman is out likely all weekend
due to a family matter. It is, by the way
in the standings. Houston one game up on the Mariners
in the West Seattle in its game, yeah, they were

(34:25):
winners against the White Sox.

Speaker 3 (34:26):
It was eight runs in.

Speaker 8 (34:27):
The top of the first, three straight homers, ten nothing
the final over the White Sox.

Speaker 3 (34:32):
It's an even play all night innings. Or that was
at four and a.

Speaker 4 (34:35):
Half and they stopped.

Speaker 8 (34:36):
I think it was one of those softball stoppages. Wasn't
it mercy rule or run rollo?

Speaker 4 (34:40):
Look for Seattle to go on a run now. Randy
Rose Arena still in the stands watching his former team.

Speaker 8 (34:45):
He was at Tampa Bay when they lost in ten innings.

Speaker 6 (34:48):
Here.

Speaker 8 (34:48):
The White Sox, though, have lost twelve in a row
victories from Miami and Kansas City. The Mets won their
fifth in a row.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
JD.

Speaker 8 (34:55):
Martinez a Grand Slam in an eight to four win
over Atlanta, which has dropped six rates. Mets now a
half game of ahead of Atlanta in the wild card standings.
The Mets winning pitcher, in his season debut off the
bad shoulder code I Sanga, left in the sixth inning
with a calf strain. Wins for Boston and Toronto, wins
for Cleveland and San Diego. The Padres have won six straight.

(35:16):
They wanted Baltimore six ' four, hitting a two run
homer top of the ninth against Craig Kimbrel.

Speaker 3 (35:21):
Back to you, Thanks for much Steve though.

Speaker 1 (35:29):
An unnamed anonymous player is attempting to set fire to
Lebron Browny and the Lakers. That's that's coming on to
good defense, Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.

Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith

Speaker 4 (35:53):
Here wasn't from me. I was hacked.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon Live from the tirag dot com studios
and outside of the Olympics, an unnamed an anonymous.

Speaker 3 (36:17):
Lakers player or Lakers player.

Speaker 1 (36:19):
During the summer league season has attempted to light Bronny
and Lebron on fire.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
A sorry that broke.

Speaker 1 (36:31):
Earlier today, Paul Pierce was talking about it an undisputed
Yahoo's got it. An anonymous player who played with the
Lakers during the Summer League games in Las Vegas said
many players himself included very upset at how Bronny was
treated by the team. He was given more of a

(36:52):
chance to succeed than anybody else, and he and other
players weren't given enough chance to succeed because they wanted
to make it all about Bronny. On top of that,
there were some media sessions where they wouldn't allow him
to be responsible and talk about himself for and that
basically it was, it was not an enjoyable situation and
it became all about Bronny. Was a big Bronny tour

(37:15):
and like some of the other players just didn't exist.
Now when this story comes out, you know, this is
the one side we're getting from the one quote anonymous player.
Harm is there any part of this that you doubt?

Speaker 3 (37:25):
Like, do you doubt that.

Speaker 4 (37:27):
No, there's gonna be at least one or two players
in the in the summer, Like, let's take it to
the summer league, because certainly as we go to the fall,
you might actually have one or two guys kind of
put their name on it if it really gets ridiculous.
But at least in the moment, everybody's trying to get
that contract right. Two way, a little bit of guaranteed money,
a signing monus, a chance to stick in the NBA,

(37:50):
and it's all about what you're putting on tape, and
when everything is built and fashioned around star turns for
Bronnie James, and certainly the coverage thereof yeah, resentment is there.
So a little bit might just be the good old
jealousy thing popping in. So you might be talking out

(38:10):
eternal little bit, but that doesn't mean those feels. I
can't tell you how to feel, right, I can't tell
you how to feel. I could try to persuade you
to come around to my way of thinking about an issue,
but I can't make you feel a certain way about
a topic.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
So, yeah, this could be a player that just felt
Mantle minutes restrictions or didn't see the ball enough or whatever.
The point of emphasis was on Brownie James that they
didn't get enough shine. So a little bit of you know,
jealousy popping in doesn't mean it's not true.

Speaker 4 (38:44):
Some jealousy certainly can play in as well, because you're
trying to be seen at the same time.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
Now, now, the thing about this story is that even
though this seems like it's a really bad story for
the Lakers, oh my, look, it's summer League.

Speaker 3 (38:59):
How many guys are really gonna make the team?

Speaker 1 (39:01):
You gotta look at a lot of guys and get
I get that you're a little disappointed Bronnie's a draft pick.
Of course they're gonna give their draft picks more of
a chance seas in seats. Yeah, However, Dalton connect and
Bronnie James are the two guys they have the most
invested in, So yeah, they're gonna get a chance. But
you can tell a lot of this is the player

(39:22):
who doesn't feel that Bronnie James is an NBA player, right,
So there's a lot of that there. And and that's
what the most important part of this story is because
if you're the Lakers, this is your last warning that
if you don't handle Bronnie James's situation right this season
and he starts getting minutes that he doesn't earn or
he's not playing in the G League, you are gonna

(39:44):
have a revolt. It's gonna be more than just a
couple of players at the bottom of the bench of
not making the team. It's gonna be half the team
is gonna say, how is Bronni getting these minutes?

Speaker 3 (39:52):
What's going on?

Speaker 1 (39:54):
You are going to torpedo a season because you feel like, hey,
you want to cow tattle Lebron so much you want
to make sure that he plays. Look, the right thing
is playing a lot in the G League. Maybe he
gets a little bit of time and mop up situations.
But if he starts getting minutes over guys like Hatschimura
or some I mean, that's not going to play well.

(40:14):
And you're gonna have enough problems making headway in the
Western Conference anyway.

Speaker 3 (40:18):
Now you're gonna add half the.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
Team is gonna rebel because it's all they're just taking
care of Lebron and they're playing a guy that hasn't
earned his minutes. I don't know how Bronni's gonna earn
his minutes because it's gonna be a case of having
to play. But how could you play if you're not
good enough? But that's what they got to navigate. But
this is the big warning sign. If they screw it
up with Bronni, this is gonna tear the team apart
over the course of the season.

Speaker 4 (40:39):
Yeah, how do you have your pudding if you don't
eat your meat. Look, we talked about it with the
Warriors and the what could have been a nostalgia tour
that you still have to try to push forward with
your best opportunity to win, and that's becoming the same thing. Here.
Are we doing a made for TV movie or are
we trying to win and gain some traction in the
Western Conference. But it was good that for most of

(41:00):
the games their head coach was in the stands to watch.

Speaker 1 (41:04):
Hey, he did everything, but coach It's okay because he's
got so much coaching experience.

Speaker 3 (41:08):
It's fine.

Speaker 4 (41:10):
He's ready to roll.

Speaker 3 (41:11):
Let's go twitter it out about a fresco. Mike, it's
swollen down.

New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
