Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, welcome in side our three of The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. Jason, real quick, yeah,
what do you got Frostburg?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
I just gotta say blank you.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Kyle Schwarber.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Kyle Schwarbert now has not one, not two, not three,
not four, not five, but six RBIs tonight. He's got
two home runs. He is three for three. The Phillies
have come from behind. They were trailing this game down one.
They now lead the Dodgers eight to four. As the
(01:03):
Dodgers bat in the middle of the sixth inning, and
you know, look, you always know with Dodgers waving the
white flag when Joe Kelly comes in. Joe Kelly just
came in, so the Dodgers basically saying listen, we'll put
it away. We'll see you guys tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
All good, Well, because yesterday we watched Jimain you had
to triumphant return and then well the end of the
year for graderol. So now you're trinding next to arm
Up Schwarber now up to two hundred and seventy two
career home runs, Smith two twenty nine batting average, and
now he's got way more home runs in his career
(01:37):
batting average.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Look at that. We got more baseball on the way.
Clearly it is a big night. Look the Mets win,
So that's a big night here. You it's a big
night in the NFL. What isn't a big night? We
got training camp fights, We got quarterbacks and head coaches
who can't get along. We got quarterbacks losing wait because
they felt fat. There is no one better to talk to.
Been a longtime friend of the show. He is a doc.
(02:00):
At least we say he is former Chargers star, our
teammate here at Fox Sports Radio. Hear him on the weekends.
He fills in here on the show and Mike Orrye
are out. It is doctor rich Ordenberger. Richie, Oh what's happening? Man?
Speaker 5 (02:13):
Oh my gosh, I'm doing a rain dance. I'm waiting
for the season to begin. I'm trying to will it sooner.
I don't know if it's working, but been in the
yard for a long time. Actually, miss you guys on
the first lap. Glad to meet you on the third here.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
So let's do.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
It while you were out there and trying to attack
your rain dance with relentless enthusiasm, don't you.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
That's right, that's right, with enthusiasm and vigor not seen
in San Diego County in quite some time.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
No, I know what rich was doing all Lamar Jackson
said he lost thirty pounds this offseason because he felt fat.
That was a big quote that I felt fat, I
felt slow, And guys like me and rich are saying, okay, well,
if he lost thirty pounds, that's food that's not being eaten.
He and I need to make sure that that food
gets eaten. So this is what we do at night out.
Richie and I are doing our part in this story.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
Well, actually, Jason, I've turned over a new lea if
I saw that weight loss story and I uh.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
I bought a total gym, the perfect push Up.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
I bought a bowflex, a Nordic track, and I'm waiting
for delivery.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
And and at that point.
Speaker 5 (03:17):
Because like you know, I look back on twenty twenty
two and I say, I just look fat and slow.
I mean I'm fast, but I felt slow, and so
I want to get faster. And so that first step
for you there, Yeah, it's all about burst and explosion.
You guys know it's it's I mean, if you if
if you look, uh, if you look up my my scouting,
my draft profile, burst, explosion, acceleration. These are words that
(03:40):
were synonymous with rich Ornberger leaving Penn State all those
years ago.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
All right, hang on rich Ornberger draft profile. I find
I find none of those words.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah, it's that.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
Well, you gotta scroll my maybe like maybe even a
couple there.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
It's there, It's all there. You know, I wouldn't read
too deeply into it.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
I you know, in fact, maybe just get out of
that close that tap, just close that tap altogether.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
That'd be fine. Here it is.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
If you do rich Ornberger draft profile and you hit return,
the first thing that comes up is where it says
x pats ol rich Ornberger admits he intentionally wrecked car
his excuse for being late to team meeting. That's the
first match.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
So listen, I remember that story, rich, better decisions have
been made.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
I can't remember when you know. It's uh, it's better
than what it used to be.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
The first hit used to be like one side of
the in and out burger menu. I'm not sure why
that came up first. That was a little embarrassing, but
you know, but so we go on.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
It's the thing, all right, Well, what let's start with
Lamar here with that, he loses thirty pounds. He looks
incredibly thin, he says, ah, I kind of felt fat.
I felt like I was slow, which he wasn't. What
what's the what's the real thing behind this big thirty
pound weight loss for Lamar Jackson coming into this year.
Speaker 5 (04:55):
I don't think he's being inauthentic. I feel like he's
being honest. I think he prob probably feels like he's
a better athlete when he's lighter, leaner. I'm sure he
had been told, like many football players, especially playing quarterback, Hey,
you know, listen, if you're gonna weather the storm of
(05:15):
the season, you're gonna have to pack on some pounds.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
This way, this way you can take a.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
Little bit more abuse and not and not get get
so rattled, not not not be so injury prone.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
And look, is there some truth to that.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
Yeah, because look, mass moves mass, and also the more
massive you are, the more you resist force. You know,
this gets down to general physics principles, and so it's
true to a certain extent.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
But here's here's what's not true.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
Lamar Jackson isn't a statue in the pocket.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
He never has been.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
Like, the biggest part of his game is elusiveness, and
not just in the open field where he's breaking ankles
other people's ankles, you know, because he can't touch him
and nobody can get a clean shot on him in
the open field. Also in the pocket, you know, when
the when the middle of the pocket collapses and you know,
a defensive lineman splits the guard and tackle and he's
(06:10):
got hands in his face, he's able to roll out
and spin out and do something dramatic and maybe lose
some yardage to gain a deep shot down field because
one of the wide receivers on the scrambled drill uncovered
and he's waving his hand at the twenty yard line,
you know, just waiting for Lamar to heave it up
there because he's got space to win the jump ball,
(06:30):
or you know when when one of these edge rushers
is is closing you know, the top of the pocket
down on him and reaching you know that that trying
to get fingertips on the football as he's dropping back
and you know, hitting his fifth step on his drop. Well,
you know, he can feel that pressure and as opposed
to being you know, even a fraction of a second
(06:52):
slower because he's lugging around twenty or twenty five more pounds,
maybe he can spring out of that backstep and he
can move up in the pocket and deliver a strikeover
the middle. So I guess my point is, I don't
know how much twenty extra pounds on his frame is
doing for Lamar Jackson the athlete, or the quarterback, or
the durability factor, because that's not a huge part of
(07:15):
his game. He doesn't have to worry about taking huge
shots in the pocket because he doesn't often take huge
shots in the pocket.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
It's just not a part of Lamar Jackson's game.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
So I'm kind of in favor of him doing what
he thinks makes him the better athlete.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Also allows them to say, hey, Dereck Henry's got enough
bulk for all of us here at the goal line,
so he can go to get that job we've done
for us. Let's transition your former team, the Chargers, and
looking at Jim Harbaugh the Michigan they get nailed by
the NCAA and he gets a show cause and all
of that fun and excitement. But from the Chargers side
(07:51):
of things, trying to figure out where they're at roster wise,
perhaps more of a reliance on the run, bringing in
a couple of former Ravens tailbacks. What are you expecting
from this iteration of a Jim Harbaugh led Chargers squad.
Speaker 5 (08:04):
Well, I think that if he's smart, he's really focusing
on that run game, especially now that Justin Herbert's going
to start the season a little banged up.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
You know how banged up. We don't know.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
I guess we'll see when he gets out of the
walking boot. I guess we'll see how he's moving if
he plays at all during the preseason. But but I
do think it's going to be a trademark Jim Harbaugh offense.
I think this offensive line is going to be tested
to control the line of scrimmage. I think these games,
if they're playing the type of football he wants to
(08:38):
play are going to be low scoring because he's going
to lean on his defense and his offensive line in
his running backs, to control the tempo of the game,
to slow things down, to limit how many possessions their
opponents get, maybe steal a couple in terms of turnovers,
and win every game, you know, kind of knuckling up.
(08:58):
You know, twenty one four team or you know twenty eight,
twenty four. You know, some of these scores that were
not used to seeing anymore because teams are rolling out
there and scoring, you know, forty two, thirty five or
you know, twenty seven, you know thirty eight, like we're
we're seeing video game scores, Matten, you know the scores
(09:19):
because everybody's throwing the football the way you do when
you're on the sticks, you know, on the Xbox or
the PlayStation.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
It's it's a different league now.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
But Jim Harbaugh is a throwback guy, and he brought
in a bunch of kind of throwback coaches and coordinators
to help him institute this. And he's got an injured
quarterback who's got a bad wheel. So I think I
think the focus is going to be the run game
and establishing the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Rich Orenberger.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Our guest the Jason Smith Show is Mike Carmon, live
from the Tireck dot Com studios. All right, now, we
saw the Seahawks have five fights in practice today. Culminated
or actually part of it was DK metcalf pulling off
one of his teammates helmets and swing his helmet at him. Now,
before you get into this, let me ask you worst
or best training camp fight you were ever in.
Speaker 5 (10:06):
I've gotten into. I'll give you one in college. I'll
give you one in the NFL. The one in college
I started because we were just the whole offensive line
was having a lousy day. The coaches were all over
us all practice long. One of the defensive linemen was
being an opportunist. You know, he was trying to, you know,
(10:28):
make an example of himself against an offensive line that
was struggling. And I absolutely cheap shotted this, this big
old defensive tackle. And you know, I'll own that. I
still don't feel bad about. I still feel bad about.
I write him Christmas cards every year. Oh that's nice.
And then he jumped to his feet and you know,
(10:49):
I pull his helmet off.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
He pulls my helmet off. He starts swinging my helmet
at me.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
I throw his helmet at him, and then Joe Pod
Joe Paterno kicks me off the field. He's like, yeah,
you're an animal. I mean, I sent you back to
Nassau County on the first thing smoking.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
And so.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
It was a shorter practice for me that day.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
And I thought you were gonna take it a shot
at Joe Paterno's size.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
Listen, I was a little reckless as a as a
younger gentleman. There might have been a bird thrown or two.
I had a little bit of an issue with authority
back then, but look, all's well, that ends well. I
think the coaching staff at Penn State appreciated the mean streak,
and so you know, that was water under the bridge
after a little while. Now in the NFL, that was
(11:38):
a different one. The best story that ever came out
of a training camp fight while I was there with
the Patriots was a full blown like defense versus offense.
It just devolved into the scene and anchorman where you know,
like where Brick is He's holding a grenade at one
(11:59):
point and showing somebody get hit in the chest with
a tried it like it was wild. Vince Wilford picked
up one of our reserve offensive lineman and was bending
him like a wetzel pretzel above his head. I've never
I mean, that's four hundred pounds of defensive lineman just
just putting somebody in the torture rack over his head.
(12:20):
It was like he picked up a three hundred pounds
man like he was picking up his dry cleaning. It
was unbelievable. So listen, fights happen tempers. They'll run hot
during training camp because the weather's hot and nobody wants
to be there, and it's very physical and you haven't
hit anybody for a long time, and so it just
sort of reignites, you know, the war in you. And
(12:42):
so yeah, guys, guys are getting frustrated, and that's probably
a good sign. It probably means that we need some
preseason games. We need to start cooling off here and
and start locking it in for the regular season.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
So lastly, the for me, the news cycle the last
forty eight hours, it's not where in the world is
Carmen san Diego who was actually a criminal?
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Is where's Brandon?
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Are you going? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Yeah, So Pittsburgh seems to be the leader in the clubhouse. Now,
I mean, Cleveland would seem to destination. We haven't had
said gotten to say that in a while, Rich.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
No, no, we haven't.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
I mean, basically since Dashawn was picking his destination along
with the Texans. And this is a little bit of
a similar situation because in that situation, Deshaun wanted out
and the Texans obliged because they had no choice because
he did not want to play in Houston any longer,
so they had to figure out a different landing spot.
(13:38):
I don't know if the conversation has devolved to the
point like it did with Houston and DeShawn, but it
looks like AYU get serious. He wants his money. The
Niners are serious, They're dug in. They don't want to
give him whatever number that is. And so at very
least we have to treat this like it's a possibility
(13:59):
or a potential. I mean, let's just comment on how
much better the Pittsburgh Steelers look with Ayuk. I mean,
all of a sudden, you have two guys who are
capable of taking the top off the defense between he
and Pickens, shorthanded guys, the over fourteen hundred yards and
(14:19):
you know eight or more touchdowns that Ayuk scored with
the Niners last year. George Pickens obviously working with better
quarterbacks this season, and still very productive last year with
the patchwork quilt they had a quarterback. This is going
to be a favorable spot for a team that really
does serve wide receivers well historically. With Mike Tomlin as
(14:40):
the head coach, I'm not surprised that Ayuk is entertaining
playing there, especially if the Steelers are entertaining him, paying
him what he wants, and if the Niners find a
fair price for him, which it sounds like is going
to be something less than a first round pick, I
think that deal could get done.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
We'll see, but Pittsburgh would be a heck of.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
A landing spot because I think Pittsburgh, automatically, just by default,
just by the upgraded in the quarterback room, will be
a better team this year, and that was a playoff
team last year.
Speaker 1 (15:13):

Speaker 3 (15:54):
What's li pretzel? Good?

You know, give me something.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
You could butcher it and say stand up, southside.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Sup, southside? Stand up?
Speaker 5 (18:51):
You know.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
And the first thing I want to say this, thank
you the Cleveland Guardians. You couldn't beat the Diamondbacks once.
You had a double header today, you couldn't beat him once.
Thanks a lot. The Diamondbacks sweep the series with a
team that had the best record in baseball going into it.
And I'll tell you what, the playoff races in the
National League and the American League are really starting to crystallize.
(19:12):
The Diamondbacks and the Padres. They're the two best teams
in baseball right now. It's not even close. Diamondbacks have
the best record over the last month. They have just
caught fire. Both these teams are caught fire at the
right time. I have a hard time seeing either of
them not getting in the playoffs. So if you're talking
about the Diamondbacks, who now are eleven games over five hundred,
Padres the same. And we told you the Diamondbacks would
(19:33):
be coming. We told hey, they're struggling now, but eventually
their pitching is going to start rolling. They're too good
a team to not win. Hey, the Diamondbacks and the Padres,
I expect to see them in the playoffs. And then,
really you're looking at the Braves and the Mets and
the Cardinals most likely for that last spot, and look
at the Mets. Look, I'll be honest with you, we
can't beat bad teams. Right. We lose two out of
(19:55):
three to the Angels, We lost the first game to
the Rockies. They win tonight, we have the Marlins and
the A's coming up. I'm sure two out of three
to them. But the thing is, I think the only
spot that's gonna wind up being open to the National
League is that third spot. And you would think for
a while, well, the Braves got a stranglehold on it.
They have just been rapidly deteriorating due to injuries and
a lack of performance. They tried to get things better
(20:16):
at the trade deadline. They've lost four in a row.
They now have a half game lead on the final
wild card. If one more loss and they're out of
playoff position for the first time all season. They have
just not played well and it's all gonna be, Hey,
who can rise up and sees that last spot. Someone's
got to start playing well. But make no mistake, that's
gonna be the only spot that's open because the Diamondbacks
(20:38):
and the Padres, they are just taking off their playing
up to their talent level. Both of these teams are
really good to got three playoff teams out of the
NL West. They're getting in there. It's only one spot
left in the National League, even though it looks closer
than it is.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
There's only one spot Left's the thing, the chaos of
the NL West at this point. Dodgers, as we talk
right now, top of the eighth, down eight to four
to the fills. We've been talking about the pitching stab stone.
Can't get out of the fifth today, So you gotta
go and use multiple relieves. You talked about it, and
as soon as you said Joe Kelly's name, it's like
(21:11):
you you wished it to go badly, and it did.
And so with the Padres playing great baseball right now,
the think with the Diamondbacks. Corbyn Carroll had a good
power month of July. He's still hitting two fifteen. Yeah no,
and yet they're still on this surge and coming like gangbusters.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
If that guy actually starts hitting the ball.
Speaker 4 (21:33):
In the back end of August, look out.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Yeah but look and again we're on the play where
likely the Dodgers are gonna lose this game again. Philadelphia's
up eight to four in the eighth. Dodgers lose this game.
Their lead is down to three over the Diamondbacks and
the Padres. And you know we talked about it last week.
You have to start realizing that maybe the Dodgers are
a wild card team, So I mean they're not gonna
(21:57):
make the playoffs. I mean they have a big enough lead.
They're too good a team. But you have to really
understand that the we thought, hey, Dodgers World Series, it's
a FATA complete Dodgers Yankees, whatever it is, and they've
been rolling through. This is a ten to twelve game lead,
and now both of these teams are absolutely red hot,
and their lead's gonna be down to three games after tonight.
(22:18):
And you say, because all the Dodger are, we gotta
get our guys back. Okay, but there's so many ifs
for the Dodgers, and that's a really big thing. It's okay, well,
if Mookie Bets comes back, Well, if it comes back,
where's he gonna play, Right, you have guys playing, okay
at shortstop, and he's gonna go to second base. You're
gonna play the outfield, like obviously he's coming back to
the top of the lineup. The guy's a phenomenal player.
He's gonna go back and play shortstop. Are you gonna
(22:40):
get all your pitchers to come back? How is that
gonna work?
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Like?
Speaker 1 (22:44):
You have a lot of injury situations. What about Max Munsey.
Once you start getting the ifs up to like four
or five, that's a big red flag. Man. If it's
just hey, if Mookie Bets comes back and they find
the right spot for him and they don't miss any production,
all right, I get one if and you're talking about
coming back, that's great, I get, But I mean it
with the Dodgers. Now you're in like five ifs and
(23:05):
you're saying, well, if the start I even got in
the starting rotation, that's got it all kinds of trouble
right now. There's a lot of ifs, man. You have
to start looking at the Dodgers gonna be fuck could
be fighting and clawing in the first round of the
playoffs in a winner go home situation when we thought
this is a breeze to the World Series. Oh Tany's
having another MVP type season. It's been. It's been an
(23:25):
amazing season for him in the first year in the
National League. And yet here's where the Dodgers are because
of injuries and ineffectiveness and all the signings they had.
You don't know when Yamamoto is gonna return and if
he pitches it all again the rest of this season.
The Dodgers are lucky like this is this is a
pretty this is a really a deaf con one type
time for the Dodgers, where it's hey, if you don't
(23:45):
pick it up, you're you're looking at hey is squeaking
into the playoffs and maybe, you know, play in a
first round series where it's hey, the pitching matchups might
not work in your favorite this might this might go
pretty fast for you, like this, this is the reality
new reality now in the National League. Just in the
last couple.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
Of weeks, Well, and you had a call against Miguel
ro oz So Dave Roberts for the first time this season.
Guess what happened. Yeah, he got ejected.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Well no, no, no, no, no no. But you know
this is also one of those this is also one
of those strategic ejections. Let's catch everybody's attention here, because
the Dodgers have found away the last few weeks. Just
get into a funk and you'll look at yes dog
days of August. I hear that. But this team is
too good. But there's a lot you got other teams
that are now just roaring right behind him, and two
(24:35):
in the same division. I mean that's gonna be tough
for them to hold back both of these teams who
are both really good right now there again, right now,
the two best teams in Major League Baseball.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
See all of this, and it just pushed my deep
dive into the first episode of Hard Knocks right off
our rundown.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
That's what happened sometimes. What's that?
Speaker 4 (24:54):
I mean, we had a guy that was in a
full on the Canadian Eagle get and after it.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
We have here's the thing Williams. Yeah, you know, because
I have some thoughts on the first episode of Final
even though I haven't seen it. I have some thoughts.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
You haven't seen it, but you have some thoughts.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
That's good, Like Tracy looks like that's my favorite episode
of thirty Rock when Tracy Jordan is on Larry King
and he's talking about whatever, and he's talking about entertainment
and Larry King goes, uh, Tracy, we have to change
topics right now because the United States has just invaded
the Balkon Islands something like that. Uh, we are Are
you okay to stay with us and talk about this story?
(25:31):
And Tracy Morgan says, Larry, I don't know anything about this,
but I have strong opinions. All right, great, we'll continue
on with Tradesman. That's how I mean.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
I'm about this coming up. But that's sports talk radio
and TV in a nutshell. Have you watched this team
at all? No, but I have some thoughts. I have
not seen it, but I have some thoughts. That's coming
up in ninety seconds.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
But first, Martin Wise has what's trending in the wide
world of sports. I'm dough.
Speaker 7 (25:55):
Well, you guys just took care of the Dodgers for me.
They were leading this game at one point. College Orber
had a leadoff home run for Philadelphia to start the
scoring in the first inning. Then the Dodgers roared back
in the bottom of the first inning. But then Kyles
Forbard struck a game because he's got, as you said earlier,
six rbi of the eighth Phillies run so far. Freddie
(26:16):
Freeman looks like he's about to make the first out.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
Of the bottom of the eighth inning.
Speaker 7 (26:21):
For the NL West leading Dodgers, who, if this core holds,
will only be three games up all those Diamondbacks. As
you said earlier, they took both games from the Guardians
in their doubleheader earlier today. All right, yesterday, rather, the
Keys and the Angels played two in the Bronx. New
York got game one five to two, Angels got Game
two eight to two. Yankees now tied with the Orioles
(26:43):
the top the AL Least after Baltimore beat the Blue
Jay seven to three earlier. Yesterday, the Clubs outscored the
Twins eight to two. Minnesota's three and a half back
of Cleveland in the AL Central. The AL West leading
Astros beat the Rangers six to four. At Tigers beat
the Mariners six to two. That put Seattle a half
game back. The White Sox win streak lasted one game
(27:04):
Oakland Beach Chicago.
Speaker 3 (27:05):
Three to two. There were five fights.
Speaker 7 (27:08):
At Seahawks practice, including one with DK Metcalf hitting a
teammate with a helmet. The Dallas Cowboys have officially named
Ezekiel Elliott they're starting running back of its upcoming season.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
Forty nine.
Speaker 7 (27:19):
Ers are working on finalizing a deal with former Lions
of starting safety Tracy Walker. Also still in talks with
the Pittsburgh Steelers about a trade for Brandon Ayuk, wide
receiver on the last year of his contract. Raven quarterback
Lamar Jackson, the running back Derek Henry won't play in
their preseason games Friday against the Eagles.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
Josh Johnson gets.
Speaker 7 (27:38):
Denied, Mike Williams, New York Jet wide receiver has activated
off the pup list, recovering from a torn acl he
suffered last season, and Rondell Moore carted off the field
with an air cast on his right leg in training
camp yesterday.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Back to you guys, Thank you, Martin.
Speaker 1 (27:54):
I appreciate it, my friend, all look, we're gonna do.
We'll get to Harball, the big story coming up in
a few minutes, but to get to hard knocks here,
because again, I have opinions about this without having havn't
seen the premiere episode, and I have strong opinions about
this even though I haven't seen it. Remember when I
told a few weeks ago, and you and I we
talked about the Bear, and I said, boy, you know
(28:15):
the fact they're dropping all these episodes at once, how
good of a season is The Bear going to be?
And it was awful. It was terrible, And I want
the ten hours back that I spent watching it because
it was awful. It wasn't a good show. I don't
I don't understand how that whole season gets greenlit. But
tonight was the premiere episode of Hard Knocks, right, tonight
(28:36):
was a parassa last night. Ye, last night was a
per episode. You've not had a chance to see. It's
been twenty five you got to see it. Oh, yes,
this morning, cup of coffee, let's go. I've not seen it.
And one of the reasons I didn't see it is
because in the preparation for the day, right, you and
I we go and look at all the big stories.
What are we going to react to? What stuff we
(28:57):
want to talk about tonight? And there was absolutely nothing
that anybody was talking about conversation wise about the first
episode of Hard Knocks, well except for Chamleb Williams bag,
which is insane. Right, Like usually the premiere episode is
there's four or five things, Oh look at this, and
look at this and look at that, and there was nothing,
(29:17):
And I'm going, wow, this is gonna wind up being
worse than the giants, Like, I mean, this is the
premiere episode and we're so starved for football, and here's
a big football show and stuff that just happened a
couple of days ago. And it's the number one pick
in the draft of the number three media market. There's
a lot of attention, and there was no conversation online,
No blogs had stories about the first episode of Hard Knocks.
(29:39):
And I was stunned, and I'm saying, Wow, how good
can this, this, this season of Hard Knocks be if
you got the premiere episode. But it's there when everybody
should be talking about it, and it's not. And that's
what makes me think, oh boy, maybe maybe uh the
for some crazy reason, maybe the Giants hard Knocks is
gonna wind up better than the Bear.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Oh no, I think there's more chaos there because again,
you had some behind the scenes stuff. You knew how
the ending was right, we knew Barkley had left for
the Eagles. We didn't quite know how that decision and
conversation came to be with Daniel Jones. We know there's
an uncomfortable side to it of they don't want him there.
(30:23):
We didn't think they'd say all the quiet parts quite
out loud and screamed them. I was waiting for him
to drive around with a megaphone like he was Costanza
with a World Series trophy. Instead, he's got the Lombardi Trophy.
As he drives around the parking lots, and I don't
want this guy. In other words, fire me. But I
sent out a tweet earlier after watching it. We had
the nod to the Blues Brothers right up to jump.
(30:44):
So we get the you know, she caught the Kadie
and all sorts of you know Chicago hom a Deep
Dish pizza and all that stuff. Lib Shreiver doing excellent work,
Caleb Williams and the draft, so we get a little
Alan Parsons project fantastic, including a voice of a big
segment on Eberflus's hair and beard work. As his wife said,
(31:06):
the beard looked good on him, so he kept it.
And so we got a whole segment with the barber,
which I wrote side note, get a barber for Fox
Sports Radium. Let's see a lot about Owen's and Biles, right,
you knew that that would be part of it, So
a big chunk of the trip to Paris and his
prep and then coming back home. Great DJ Moore gets
(31:28):
his deal, so you get the Rosenhauses involved for a minute,
a little bit of Keenan Allen talking stats for days,
and Roman Dune's a good Canadian eagle. The usual talent
show thing where dude sings, I'm proud to be an
American and well strips down to his well his underpants
with a picture of an eagle on there. And then
(31:49):
Colin Johnson celebration at the Hall of Fame game with
the backup quarterbacks a lot about their families, and then
a reminder to buy a slipping slide because they showed
the quarterbacks working on sliding to get out of harm's way.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
So yeah, that's it.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
Nothing.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Really, it may just end up being a dud, you know,
Like I mean, that's it's stunning to me because you like, again,
there's good seasons of hard knocks and there's not. But
it's it's like a movie. Like, Okay, when a movie
comes out, it does a great first weekend and then
word of mouth gets around and either people say, oh
it's great and people go see it, or hey, this movie,
we'd had a great opening weekend, it dropped off this
(32:26):
amount over the next week. Okay, this didn't even have
a big opening week This is why I forgot about
the Nick Saban conversation with me.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
This is about managing expectations and what you need to
do and all that.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Yeah, that was great.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
I mean this is.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
I mean, it just may end up being a dud,
like one of those bombs, like, oh man, we spent
a lot of money on this and look at where
it's at. And again, I never thought the Giants would
wind up being more interesting, But I gotta think, Okay,
if you said to me we have more conversation off
the Giants, Hard Knocks or the Bears, I would have
told you we're not gonna talk about the Giants at all.
I mean, the Giants didn't give us a lot, but
it gave us a little bit of Kwon Barkley, and
(33:01):
we talked about how we saw how bad of an
offseason this was for for Danny Dimes. Right, they just
want to get rid of him. I know if we
even going to get that with the Bears, I mean,
I didn't know we're gonna even get that. But at
this point, right as of today, there's nothing.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
Right. What are we gonna see a couple more drills
with with Caleb Williams, some more conversations with Eberflus where
he just keeps talking. It's like, all right, you made
your point, you made your point, let it, let it go,
get to the next thing.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
I mean, it feel like I did. I didn't even
need to watch it. Really, I didn't even need to
watch this, Like, oh what do I need to watch for?
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Well, the thing where you laugh over AJ Morris contract
was all you needed. Yeah, everybody came together, look at
this exchanging numbers. And then they pull him off the
practice field and everybody has hugs. And then he goes
back and he's got the giant one hundred million dollar
grin on his face and he starts telling everybody, I
just put pen to paper, and so you have to
(33:53):
celebrate on like nothing incendiary, nothing, nothing good. The families
might have been interesting if you gave them some more times,
like the backup quarterbacks families living and dying.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
With each throw.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
But that's it. That's it. Funny, boring exit hout about
a Fresca exit swollen dome. The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Carmon Live from the tire rack
dot Com Studios. We got more football on the way,
the biggest controversy scandal of the day, Big headline might
not be as big as you think. It's next right
(34:26):
here Jason and Mike Fox.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon, Live from the tire rack dot Com Studios. Well,
the NCAA came a calling today for Jim Harbaugh. No,
not for the sign stealing scandal, for the COVID violation.
Support you eight that one boy. The NCAA today announced
(34:59):
a four year show cause order for for Michigan coach
Jim Harbaugh for impermissible contact with recruits and players while
axis was restricted during the COVID nineteen pandemic. So basically,
after four years, the nca got around and saying, oh yeah, hey, yeah,
we finished our exhaustive investigation, and so Harbaugh gets a
(35:19):
four year penalty. Basically, what this means is is that
if Harball wanted to come back to college football, he's
got to have a four year some sort of probationary
period and the first year he's not allowed to coach.
If a team whi's going to hire him, he can't
coach the first year. If you hired for a four
year contract, that first year he cannot coach, team, cannot
(35:40):
be near the team. So the NCAA decides that this
is completely independent of the Hey, you know, you guys
were taping signals of the other team's last couple of
years as well. This is just the NCAA figuring this
out for Jim Harbaugh. And look, is this a big deal. No,
Harbor's not going back to college. He went to his
alma mater, he won national championship, he beat he won
(36:02):
three straight Big Tens if you know Ohio State twice.
He's done. He's not going back to college football. This
is the NCAA showing you we really hate Jim Harbaugh,
which we told you about all year long. That's why
things were dangerous from Michigan last year. Oh we hate
Jim Harball. We hate Jim Harbaugh, but we're gonna show
you that we're still gonna come down hard on him
(36:22):
even though this is something from four bleeping years ago
and we hate him. But really, in effect, all this
is is the NCAA standing up and saying, hey, we're gonna,
you know, come at Harball big here and give him
this big penalty. Because honestly, I'm not worried at all
about the big controversy going on that that Michigan could
get penalized further for the Connor Stallions thing from the
(36:46):
last couple of years. Look, if the NCAA was gonna
go after Michigan, they would have done so already. All right,
then you're not. You're gonna wait another year and then
right before the season you're gonna say, oh, guess what,
we're taking away your national title and you can't play
for the in the playoffs and two years like that's
not gonna happen. Michigan would have been penalized bigger. Are
they gonna get some sanctioned Sure? Could Charon Moore, who's
(37:07):
involved in the Connor Stallion situation, get three games to
start the season, Yeah, Well they get scholarship productions. Yeah,
but you're also talking about Harball was suspended for half
the season last year. Now he's got this penalty where
he can't come back to college football without a big penalty.
This is the NCAA showing this is what our teeth
are gonna be on this and anything that comes out
(37:28):
from Michigan after this, when it comes to the Connor
Stallion's a sign stealing scandal, it's gonna be so light.
I'm not worried at all. I put this in a
two at a scale of one to ten. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (37:38):
In the end, this is the h what do we
call them, the proclamation? Like today we declare this insert
honoring this man, woman child day. And they give you
a sheet of paper and it goes into a file
somewhere and maybe there's a couple of photos of you
getting said piece of paper and neh, that is really cool,
(38:00):
and then nobody cares.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
That's kind of what this is. All right.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
We just need to make the file complete, print it out,
yeah on the station area while we're still have some
better artificial letter.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
It's got to be a official letter, does.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
It's got to look official. I'll use the auto pen
to sign it and we'll be good to go. Look,
it's a relic, it's a dinosaur organization. This is in
line with everything they've ever done. All right, go back
to the Reggie Bush thing I mean is like it
or not. Look how many years it took for that
(38:34):
and so many of the other incidentss long after guys
had left coaching, had left playing. They might have been
done with their pro careers by time a decision came
down in some of those cases. This is a let's
before we get into football twenty twenty four, we can
close the book on this. Whatever happens with the Stallions thing.
(38:56):
We get the documentary here later in the month, so
we get that from it for it, but otherwise.
Speaker 1 (39:02):
It's got no teeth.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
He ain't going back and he got right, So I
mean that's done. And then whatever transpires with the Stallions
and signs and whatever is a whole other thing. But
I wouldn't suspect at this point there's anything again. The
great White whale has gone to the NFL now.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
And also, remember, Michigan is big business for college football. Okay,
they are big business. They're Alabama, right. There is no
higher profile team in all of college football than Michigan, Michigan,
Ohio State. They're not suddenly gonna say, oh, guess what,
you can't play for the national title. You're ineligible for
winning the Big Ten the next couple of years. For
all of a sudden, Fox is gonna go wait a minute,
(39:44):
they're the official team of Big Neon kickoff. We got
we got Michigan, Michigan State, we got Michigan, Penn State,
we got Michigan Wisconsin. Wah wah wah. This is big business.
Now you're not suddenly gonna say, oh, by the way,
here's your big penalty for Michigan. So as much as
it seems like the end, say, if they were gonna
do it, they would have done it last year. They
had the evidence, they had the investigation. They're continuing to wait.
(40:06):
I don't even know if we're gonna get anything for
this year because because they're still this late. So I
would say there's no way they come down hard on
Michigan at this point. And I would just worried.
Speaker 4 (40:15):
Love to see the meetings between the heads of ABCESPN
and Fox just where if they got a notice saying
all right, here's some big sanctions against Michigan, to where
they just hit reply saying, try.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
Again to tell you, I'm being honest about this. I
get texts about this every day from my wife's family
in Michigan. What's gonna happen? What are you hearing? What's
going on? And I'm going I'm not worry. I'm not
worried about this. So now now I got to answer
to them in addition to answer to everybody else. So
you know I'm telling you the truth when I say
I'm not that worried about it, and if you were lying,
it's a great heel turn on the family. Coming up next,
(40:51):
who's gonna win all the big NFL quarterback Derbys.
