This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Greetings, Welcome inside. What a glorious Thursday. It is Fox
Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my bes friend
Mike Harmon, live from the Tirack dot Com studios tirec
dot Com. I hope you get there in unmatched selection,
fast free shipping, free road has a protection and over
ten thousand recommended installers. Tirack dot Com is the way

(00:52):
tire buying should be. Why is today at glorious Thursday?
Is because the Mets one and the Braves lost and
the Mets are back in the playoff. No no, no,
well that's part of it. But is it because the
White Sox now have new direction, new manager. You got
Ozzy bit No no, no, you didn't do that. I'm
wearing my jersey walks apart. Yeah, no, you're wearing You're
wearing your authentic White Sox giveaway jersey, Hey, brought to

(01:15):
you by Del Milk with the big Dell Milk. I
mean we had to you know, you paid for the tickets.
They gave you the free stuff and it wasn't I mean,
I didn't tape over the logo. Good. This isn't real polyester.
What is this a prudential white Sox. Look, I'm not
walking near an open flame to test what the material is.
Se Sports Chicago authentic Fan's right. I didn't go on

(01:40):
the store buying when now I'm gonna go to a
gay time. Suns out, guns out. Sometimes it happens, But
clearly the biggest story of the day, which we will
get into in depth in a couple of minutes, Team
USA lives to fight another day in basketball as they
hold off Serbia in the Olympics. An incredible day, But

(02:02):
we would be remiss if we didn't get you caught
up on what was happening now just for a couple
of minutes here. Yeah, I have action. We got life
football going on, not that one. Hey, Hall of Fame
game where everybody, No, no, we got real life. Couple
of football games. You've done the Bear's victory? Uh? You played?
Would you play like eight minutes and then it doesn''t
matter they won? You played? What's in the bus? It's

(02:24):
in the books?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
What?

Speaker 1 (02:25):
No, there's the opening kickoff? Boy, the kickoff looks crazy. Oh,
here comes the lightning? Games over? That was the game. Wow, completely,
that was the game missing Brett Rippin and Colin Johnson
in the moment they had Have you not watched hard
not yet? You had a whole other twenty four hours
to go back and watch the greatness. I'd rather watch
Colin Hay. You think Colin Hay alone September eighth. You

(02:46):
want to go Ringo and the All Star Band. Let's
go over, kid, do do do?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Two games going on right now. Giants lead the Lions
fourteen to three, this one late in the fourth quarter,
ending Hooker getting some it's all over for the Lion
ended run here in this game, Hendon Hooker getting some
extended run for the Lion. That's his name, right. Every
extra time everything was fine. I did not say anything

(03:12):
bad that everything is good. He's gonna be the guy
that could be the one yelling, Oh, Roger Goodell, will
anybody selling my jersey? Not making money off this? No
one's gonna buy a hooker jerse. I can't believe this.
But everything I said was he's got extended playing time.
You gotta pay extra. Everything I said was fine. But meanwhile,
talk about extended playing time. Two minutes ago, in the
fourth quarter, Panthers in the Patriots, Patriots up seventeen to three. Uh.

(03:34):
There's a reason why everybody seems to be really excited
about Joe Milton. And I'll tell you what. He has
been the star of the game tonight. Milton throwing for
a touchdown in fifty four yards, running for twenty five yards,
the big thirteen yards, scramble off seventy at thirteen. That's okay,
you run seventy two to get thirteen. Boomer. He would

(03:56):
have had a lot of fun calling that woo whoo,
whoopt guy Milton does. I'll say one of this about
Milton because now suddenly it's gonna be boys. He better
than Drake Man and I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna die
on the hill of They overdrafted Drake May. They got
caught and they got they bullied themselves into drafting Drake
May just because a quarterback was there and they were
picking third. Sure, but I'll tell you what and and

(04:17):
and it's not that Milton that Drake May was. You know,
we played a little bit tonight. He had one drive completed,
a couple of pens. Seems like they probably should have
let him have another series or so, right, and like,
if you're gonna look, if you canna rip that band
aid off, if you put the kid out there, yeah,
let him, let him, let him work couple left, Right,
let's actually go through a couple of changes and a
couple of series to at least get your feet wet instead.

(04:40):
All right, due at three nineteen. We'll see it later. Yeah,
it's all good. And look nothing bad, nothing he was.
He looked fine in the very short amount of time
he was in there. But Milton has come in and
I'll tell you what first thing I saw, come and say, boy,
he looks a lot lighter than he did. You talk
about Lamar Jackson the thirty pound weight loss. Joe Milton
certainly looked a part his entire time in college, a

(05:01):
start in Michigan where he looked like he was gonna
be the next great quarterback of the guy Harbaugh was
waiting for. Didn't work out, and I think both teams
figure out. Okay, Michigan won the national title. I got
JJ McCarthy. Milton went to Tennessee and things worked out
pretty good from here because here he is now fighting
his way into the NFL. Yeah, and he could throw
that football over a mountain. He could, he could throw
it through a mountain. But he is so he looked

(05:22):
like he's lost a little bit of weight, moving a
little bit better, and he can move and do things
like this like he did tonight. Plays get out of him.

(05:48):
That was a great play out, get out. Yeah, I
means are gonna love it. Play by play, you're supposed
to let people know what's going on, not like you
and I watching him and oh oh oh oh, that
was Joe Milton scrambling to one side all the way
back to the other side and running for thirteen yards.
It was big a spin. It was a big reverse,

(06:09):
big loop. That's what you're supposed to get by the
oh oh oh oh oh.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
It was.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
I was telling you Joe Milton has skills, man, I'm
not saying ready, oh he's ready to start. But you
look at the Patriots and I'm telling you, man, Drake May, Hey,
the shows today just announcing the start, I'm nervous about it.
I'm not. Hey, look for the Jets. That's going to
be two more wins every year for the Patriots. But
still the way they did offensively and going after May
I'm like, you sure about this guy? Yeah? We talked

(06:37):
about that draftway. We came out after the draft and
first round ended and looked at each other and I
just don't know when you draft that high, like, you
don't assume that you're in a multi year period of suck.
This is not the White Sox baseball. No, you're you're
picking You're all right, we're picking third. We but we
have there's back here again. We've got to take the quarterback. Yeah,

(07:00):
guess what, they may be back there next year. Maybe
they may be back there next year. Look it's over
unders what four and a half wins or five wins
or something. Just it's been such a quiet camp for
a guy took third overall, when the guys taken right
in front of him were said, oh great, here you are.
We're inserting you as a starter. Hey, you're starting right away.
Caleb Williams, Hey, Jane Daniels, just starting right away. Drake May. No, no, no, no,

(07:21):
maybe third string. Jacoby Brissett's our guy. Now maybe between
May and Milton there's a battle. Who's going to be
the back? Is like, whoa, did you really take the
right guy? Did you really take or did you feel
nothing more than we're picking third, we have to do it.
You could have traded with many teams that would have
moved up the third for May, for JJ McCarthy, all
the many teams would have done that. You could have

(07:42):
moved down and said, Okay, we'll get our quarterback next year,
because yes, we're picking third, but in the end, we're
getting the third best guy. So really, and there's a
drop off. You're talking about Caleb Williams, who maybe one
of the most pro ready guys that we've seen in
the last decade, the Heisman Trophy winner who is absolutely
dazzling talent, and May. No, but Drake May is. Yeah,
Drake May gets people fired. You take Drake May doesn't

(08:04):
work out, That gets people fired. Yeah, but remember all
the hype of Drake May before his final year of
college football. Sometimes, Hey, right, never extra year, too long. No,
if it's one, if it's one am, and you can
leave the party on a high note, leave, I'm gonna
stay it till two thirty three. No, no, no, leave
on a high note.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Now.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
One of my favorite memes is the all right, we're
gonna leave the party, and then here's the look I
get when they hear the next beer crack a right,
we're out of here. We'll see it, Leonard. I mean.
They also say you could save several days on your
life every year if you leave an event with the
Irish goodbye, you know, say goodbye, you just leave. How
do you how do you say? What do you mean
save days? Well, but the idea of like because if

(08:42):
you go and you to the host or whoever to
say goodbye, odds are there's a group of people, so
you end up staying an extra half hour. So if
you start adding up all of those when you go
to any social gathering okay in her extra meetings, you know,
lingering at work, or when you go to an a
party or an event that over the course of a year,
that's several days of your life that you're giving away

(09:03):
with added goodbye time instead of just going I'll see him. Okay.
But here's the thing. If I'm doing that, if I'm
doing it at work functions, then all I'm gonna do
is piss off people I work with. He just walks away.
He does just say anything. Jason Smith w He comes over, says,
eye see the guy? Well, I mean what it hears
that you didn't show up? I mean you got that anyway,
I'm doing it at a party. I'm just it's just okay.
So I get home. Twenty minutes later, I'm watching twenty

(09:26):
minutes less of Kate. Yeah, but did you enjoy those
twenty minutes or did you feel compelled because you didn't
want someone to say, yeah that Jason? He just left.
He's a jerk. Hey, Jason was here. I saw him before.
Hey Jason, remember that story. No, he left. I'm playing
twenty minutes less a Spider Solitaire. That's twenty minutes all
I'm doing. Okay, would you have enjoyed your Spider Solitaire?
More Spider Man Spider Solatar? Hey Godlata, Yeah, Frostburg. What

(09:49):
if I were to tell you I know Milton's future here?

Speaker 2 (09:52):
You do?

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Yeah? Oh ahead, what do you got? Well, he's gonna
end up at in attack. Okay, oh no, and the
company is gonna decide to fire him, but they're not
gonna tell him. Oh okay, So he's just gonna keep
showing up and he'll be like a camp arm and
they're not gonna pay him. Yeah, that's exactly how it's
going on. Oh well, I'll tell you you think you think?
Jord Mail walks in says, hello, Milton, what's happening. Why

(10:18):
don't you just sort of take care of the cockroach
problem we have here in the locker room. Tell you what,
get a get a what's get something else in a canapest?
What did he say? Get a blank and a canna
pesticide and sort of take care of that problem around.
He see, now I gotta go revisit the great I
could I could fit the building on fire. Get a

(10:38):
what and a cannapesticide, that's what he says, Get a
get a flow, get a flashlight, that's his Get a
flashlight and a canna pesticide and sort of take care
of that cockroach problem around. That's nicely done. Maybe Stephen
rut will become like a like like the mascot of
the Patriots. Hey, look who's coming to all the game
and he dresses up like Milton and the big sign
is what's happening And they say that for Milton every

(10:59):
touchdown that was all the guys their T shirts is
Milton's face and a stapler on it. Oh that's it, Frostburg. Yeah,
patt In this idea is good, the flashlight and the
Pesta side. But you know, it's funny because, as you said,
there's not been a lot out of Patriots camp. So
as much as things may be different in the post
Bill Belichick era, other than people showing up when they

(11:21):
did for Belichick and company, nobody ever cared about Patriots camp.
They just went to work. They were always the ninetieth
story show up like this is the same thing. It's like,
all right, these guys are just playing so great. May
this is the best circumstance for him because outside of Boston,
nobody's paid attention to anything they've done in camp. Although

(11:43):
now Joe Milton has that highlight. Yeah, I mean, look,
look he is playing against Look not going crazy about
this because he's playing against backups and backups, backups late
in the game. But still you have not had a
quarterback with supposedly incredible talent, sees a job or at
least be talked about as hey, this guy is in
the mix. What a great camp he's having, How good
he looks. There's none of that. I'm telling him and

(12:04):
JJ McCarthy, the two guys, I'm like, boy, really don't.
I don't get that, man, I don't get what people
what are projected. Oh whatever they can't do in college,
they're suddenly going to be able to do in the NFL.
As you're family, your you know, your wife's family, everybody had.
They now just owned you because of your dismissal of McCarthy.
Oh no, no, he's done.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Is that okay?

Speaker 1 (12:26):
Yeah, because I mean you kind of disparaged him. Last matter,
they won, But they won, doesn't matter. Okay, they won,
just like the US Let's winning cures went. It doesn't
matter no matter how horrible you play in different sections
of the game. But I'm winning. But I'm telling you, man,
I mean, I'm telling you this is just a watch

(12:46):
out and watch how things go Drake may New England
with this, I'm telling you this is a big story
and he's someone that his time goes on. It's going
to be Why isn't he played well real quick. We
talked about it like even if they're offensive, isn't explosive,
the defense is going to play pretty well, I think
when it's all said and done, so see can you
coax one extra scoring drive out? And if Joe Milton

(13:10):
is the guy that gives you a little bit of
electricity and can extend plays like that, that probably gets
him a victory and an extra long look exit out
about a Fresco exit swollen down The Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon live from the tiraq
dot com studios. Speaking of debuts coming up, we'll talk
about a debut that wow, you talk about erasing all

(13:31):
the hype that you had built up in camp so far.
But straight ahead, the United States men's team moves on
to the gold medal game against France on Saturday, and uh,
we don't like to say we're ahead of the curve,
except we do because we were way ahead of the
curve with how things played out today. Fourteen USA. That's
coming up next right here, Jason and Mike, this is

(15:42):
get into Team USA, let me just say us USA.
There's there's a guy and this is where I get
caught up a lot in uh ty shirt. You're going
to hell for that. You're going to hell. You're going
to have to take he for all your opinions, No,
because my opinions are good.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
So am I.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
You pressed a button that's a great opinion, and you
insulted the United States of America. You are rooting thing,
you are rooting against America. I want them to win.
I'm gonna give you the Homer Simpson. You don't like it,
move to Russia. Okay, that's what I'm gonna tell. You're right,
you don't like it. That's what you do, all right,
I am down, all right, Alex si from Fox Sports,
Rade deal, here we go. The song comes in now.

(16:21):
Uh yeah, but Running Up that Hill might be a
number one hit over there right now. In the words
of Kobe, job's not finished. No, no, no, hey, running
up the Hills a brand new song in Russia. I
mean it's a number number one, this new song from
Strange of Things, ba Jury, best character, he is best.
Best one is Judy. No he's not. They No, he's
that Joey's Russia. I don't care. Russians number one thing.

(16:45):
Russians don't like Russians. Okay. There were side each other
naked in the snow. They were excited. Okay, you know
what though, all right that I don't think that's true.
I think you just said I don't think that's true.
You've never watched it. What Russian soldiers fighting naked in
the snow? Now, I've never seen they literally ride bears, really, really,

(17:05):
really they ride bears. You're walking around? Where do I where?
Where can I see this on the internet? No, I'm
not gonna ask, no, never mind, No, okay, yeah, you
can't listen. Don't send me any dark web stuff. Okay,
I know, I know. It's don Onion. Okay. There's a
guy standing there with a stand up base playing in
the background. The website's called I Got you. Sure it is,

(17:28):
and it's a shirtless guy and a horse. Yes, exactly.
But I'll tell you the guy I was Dot gov
good one, uh is all summer long. The guy I've
been buying all the hype on has been Melik Neighbors. Right,
just all everything you've read, what I've seen? Hey, what
what what?

Speaker 2 (17:47):
What?

Speaker 1 (17:47):
A what? An uncoverable guy? This is like very very
similar to what was said about Tank Dell in the
last off season. Tank Dell's turned out to be a
great play. Got hurt obviously in the middle of year
last year, but he was terrific. So I'm buying all
the hype on Melik Neighbors. Yes, he's uncoverable. Daniel Jones,
come on down tonight, mylak Neighbors. Twelve snaps, no targets. Yeah,

(18:09):
there was one of you play that highlight back of
the Milled run. It would play just the same. They
ran around. There was one play where he ran down
the field open and Drew Locke didn't see him, which,
let me say this, Welcome to the New York Giants,
Elk Neighbors. That's gonna happen. But I mean trying to
force a trade to the pages, like a little bit more.

(18:31):
Here's his debut is twelve snaps in this. If they
don't force feed him the ball, just make the fans happen.
If he's uncoverable, you're gonna find him, right. That also
means your DB's uncoverable, you're gonna fight. But again it
means that your defense made me one team Like, oh,
all this hype, Elak Neighbors now like, no, dude, I'm
taking Marvin Harrison before him. I'm taking Rome of Dunes

(18:52):
Ain't before him. No, no, no, Elk Neighbors. He's uncoverable.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
Yeah, we're working on our fantasy rankings as we speak,
says Giants fourteen, Lions three. Sorry, Milie Neighbors, Sorr, I
mean all the ground. He's so uncoverable, Okay, And twelve
snaps one time when they throw the ball, he's gonna
be uncoverable. Right one time he did look for him.
You're looking for him, You're not. You're not looking for
a Keen Nix. Okay, so all, I got all these
other guys out here. You know you're not looking for

(19:19):
Mark Bavaro. Jeremy Shots is not running out on this field. Shots, Okay,
who are you looking for your first round pick? Malik Neighbors. Yes,
the one play that was missed and again get used
to that, especially when you run deep with your hand
up and don't get the ball. But still twelve snaps,
no targets. Oh man, if I'm doing my fantasy draft
right now, I'm dropping you like I'm dropping you like below,
Malachi Corley, like you Lakue Neighbors, just dropping because I'm

(19:42):
like reactionary like that. I'm just dropping him all the way.
If you're just done with him, forget it. He'll move
back up. Oh yeah, I got opportunity to shine next week? Sure?
How many catches for Sterling Shepherd?

Speaker 3 (19:53):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (19:54):
Yeah, twelve, twelve, one hundred and forty yards. Didn't think
I was gonna say that, did you? Sterling? Oh? You
have giants? I mean they did give us a lot
of entertainment in offseason hard knocks dot Gov showing you
how not to run a business and certainly how to
make sure that you have enough tape or whatever whatever

(20:15):
it is, shaving cream or something to cover the camera
so they don't actually see what you're doing. Let's weak up.
More football on the way, because boy, wait till you
hear Jerry Jones today. We told you a knew Jerry
Jones is coming, and he's here. But obviously, look the
biggest story of the day, one of the most exciting
basketball games in the last few years. The United States
comes from down fifty in the fourth quarter to beat

(20:37):
Serbia to move on to the gold medal game Saturday
against France. And let me just say this, because over
the course of the Olympics, we've told you it doesn't
matter what happens as long as we win. It doesn't
matter who plays, doesn't matter who doesn't play, as long
as we win. Jason Tatum's not getting any minutes doesn't matter.
We won, Right, all the critics, it's like, it's not

(21:00):
winning is not good enough for anybody. It's not good
Why is Jason Tatum not playing? It doesn't matter. We
won the game. But you know why that gets exacerbated.
It doesn't matter. Points spread's always been there, but it's
never been so prevalently shown in all the coverage, even
of Olympic stuff. So it's like, oh, they're seventeen point favorites. Well,
it's your fault if you're betting your team USA Basketball,

(21:20):
because they've shown you we're not gonna cover. Okay, we're
not gonna cover. We'll win, but we're not gonna come spreads.
We're not gonna do it. They're not that team. Bet
against them. Bet against me, you win more. Bet against me,
you win more. But all this credit all we should
have done this, and Steve Curtis should have done this.
You know what, every just stick it. Steve Kerr is
the best coach for this team. And for all the

(21:42):
things you want to criticize Steve Kerr for, which was
just the first three quarters, it was all like if
they played Jason Tatum, suddenly the score would have been
flipped and we would have been beating Serbia by twenty. No,
it's not the case, right. Steve Kerr has a job
of trying to find out which guys are meshing on
the floor at the best in that moment, doesn't have
a lot of time to figure out how the twelve

(22:02):
best guys or twelve of the best guys because Jalen
Brunt is not there, twelve of the twelve of the
best guys and Tyre's Halliburton's a DNP now almost in
every single game. Oh, by the way Lebron's play, He's
gonna get a gold medal just the same, still gonna
be called a champion. All all of this criticism of
how to Steve kerrz got the job of trying to
find the right guys, and in the first half it
was how do you go with these guys? As well

(22:24):
as Steph Curry was playing Lebron. Look at the old guys,
they're getting beat. What is Steve Kurr doing. What is
Steve Kurr doing? Well? What happened in the fourth quarter?
Do you have the right guys on the floor or not? Oh? Yeah,
he had the right guys on the Florida win that game.
He had Lebron, he had Steph, he had Embiid for
the most part, who was keeping both teams in the game,
and Booker. Yeah, he had the right guys on the

(22:47):
floor and we won. Nothing else matters. The rest of
it is irrelevant. We won, and we're playing for the
gold medal on Saturday. And I say this because we're
all the Steve Kerr hate that was going on all day.
It was going to be his fault if we lost.
Serbia fails to foul with twenty six seconds left and
they're down too, which is the most ridiculously stupid strategy

(23:09):
that I don't understand that real basketball minds want to
continue on with this. The United States are Jokic gets
a bucket and they're down to with twenty six seconds left,
so you have like a two second difference on the
shot clock. You're fouling right away, because the United States
can take the shot clock all the way down to
three seconds, and by the time if they let's say
they hoist up a last second shot with three seconds

(23:31):
left on the game clock and it hits the rim,
by the time you get it the clock hit zero,
you don't have any play. I don't understand what Serbia
was doing trying to let time tick away all the
way down to they foul Steph Curry with a handful
of seconds left. He makes both free throws, the game
was over, Serbia decided, Oh, we're gonna biff the end
of this game and give it to you. That was

(23:52):
the worst coaching decision possible. And I'm watching it going
great for us, Hey, this is awesome, but wow, you
ate Steve Kerr. Steve curR ain't doing something like that
when the chip down and you're talking about the end
of a seven final game to go to the gold medal,
and everybody's nerves are like this, I don't know what
to do. How do you not foul? You need to
extend the game when you're down when it's basically the
shot clock in the game clock are exactly the same

(24:12):
that basketball one on one. Yeah, so yo, kitch with
the layup, it was twenty four seconds left, get the ball,
Kdi gets it to Curry and then you have the
flop or offensive file depending on your perspective. You know,
Dwyane Way and of course called it. You know it's
a flop, like you can hit the guy in the
face utmost either way, and then he gets over to

(24:35):
the other side of the court, and I thought the
guy tried to follow him multiple times and they didn't
whistle it like because they started talking about it on
air again. I kept the sound up long enough to
my own detriment, but I thought he followed him well
beyond the arc. But then the whistle didn't come for
another three or four seconds. Did they waste time? No
question about it. But was it as egregious as it's

(24:57):
made out to me? I don't think so, because every
other time you've gone and tried to follow a guy deliberately,
you get the unsportsman like nonsense. So I think you're
playing a fine lot or whether they're gonna call it all?
How many times did you see the big ben down low?
I got two hands on your shoulders. I'm ripping you
away from a rebound. So you don't know when the
calls got gonna come. Man, you think you think the

(25:18):
calls were crazy today? Way do you get to the
gold medal game? Go back, go back and watch again
the France Germany game that preceded it. Oh, holy good lord,
that was some efficient. Way do you see Lebron and
stuff foul out in the first half? Lady Wenby's on
the line. Wenby's been in the line twenty five times
in the first half of this game. Wait, do you

(25:39):
see that home cooking refereeing on it was un game's
watching them today. There there's moments where it's like, all right,
they're playing Gaelic football, right, I've picked up my dribble.
Now I'm gonna take three steps. Now I'm gonna dribble again.
There was one with Lebron that was obvious, and then
you had a couple from Serbia as well. Jokis did
it a couple of times in the lanes, like we're

(26:01):
really kind of mixing all sorts of sports. I get
the Olympic spirit of all the different games that we're celebrating.
We're still supposed to be playing basketball, right, so confusing.
The other thing is they went broke from the outside.
They were zero for nine from three point ranks. Seven
of ten inside the arc were Serbia in the fourth quarter,
but oh for nine all of a sudden, all the

(26:24):
the blitzing from early. Because you watch soccer, what's one
of the cardinal rules as a defender, don't dive right,
don't dive in one touch gets around you. For the
United States, they kept going for steals and then it
was wide open looks early on better closeouts late, but
certainly some wide open looks that suddenly weren't falling for Serbia.
And you know they made Lebron mad because they kept

(26:46):
looking at Carmelo Anthony. Suddenly he became the touch point
for everything. I do need to say, this hang on
as great, You're right, I need it became all about
Carmelo as much of as much of a proponent of
what Steve Kerr is doing, how great a job he's doing.
I do need to say. I think the best coach
on the floor at the end of the fourth quarter
was Carmelo Anthony. I really, I mean watching watching him

(27:08):
shout whatever he was shouting out to KD, watching him
shout shouting out to Lebron. Carmelo's showing, Hey, I'm the
real coach. You get a lot of run late in
the game, like, and he was in their heads, right,
he was in Bogdanovitch and all those guys are too
worried about it. Oh Bo Danavic is doing the mellow
three pointer celebration, Like I thought at one point him
and his kid were gonna go on the floor. I'm like,
don't get hurt. You're going to Syracuse. You means you

(27:30):
play a five star recruit. Okay, just don't get hurt
running on the floor, don't get suspended, he gets tackled.
But this you know from a fan for Spout. Okay,
so there's your there's there's my bit of anger and
the Steve current, all the hate, and that's what we've
been talking about al tournament. It's like, it may be
a bit clunky, but in the end, you win open
seed and prosed open season. If you lose open season,

(27:52):
if you lose, but they didn't, it doesn't matter who
plays and who doesn't play. It makes no difference. If
we walk away with a gold medal, it makes absolutely
no difference. Schedule makers suck, by the way, But two
am for the bronze medal game, yeah, and then noon
for the gold Okay? Well, well, Mike, who's watching gold?
I would watch it. Gold is much more important than bronze.
I'm just watching that for my only k. Mike wants

(28:13):
to watch the first losers instead of the championship. I
want to watch the first loser. I would like to
watch them all compartmentalize without an eight hour break tween
want to break. That's how it goes. How are you
so you're you're anti that they put the gold medal
game in the best window possible. I'm not saying that bronze.
I'm saying the bronze medal should be a little closer,
kind of like it was today. Right, everybody's in the

(28:35):
tunnel waiting to come out watching the final minutes and
then they go, oh, so you want to like have
it have it postpot like the thing. The Olympic games
are on such a locked schedule because they don't want
to run over because then you miss broadcasting rather elements,
you missed the beginning. So you've got it a kind
of seven. You can't can't have the basketball? Like how
many times you go, oh, great, well, hey the first round.

(28:58):
Uh you know, Syracuse play tonight for round of the
NCAA tournament, which I know I'm going back aways because
Syracuse is in the tournament. All the game seven oh five. No, no, no,
game is gonna be eight to fifteen because of all
the delays because of the games earlier. Now this game
went late, this game went late. It's okay, you got
two games. You can watch the game. No one's saying
you can't watch watch a game if it's not important
to you. Work it out what game watch the game. Watch,

(29:19):
you get up at two o'clock in the morning. Watch.
No one's saying you can't do it. They're not they're
not putting it on, not putting on television. Watch a
game and watch again, because I'm telling you to make
a point about the gap between the games and all
of a sudden you're getting wide like I offended your
sensibilities of your life. Matter what way you made it
about Syracuse, no matter what. Yeah, I put us back
in the tournament. That's kind of fun. But no matter

(29:41):
what you said, Ah, they're doing this and the United
States one, It's okay to be a fan for five minutes.
It's okay to be a fan for five minutes of that.
To quote the great Ricky Bullby, if you're not first
or last man, all right, well it's it's not wrong.
I like how you wa Sascha Baron Cohen in there,
Ricky Bill be be But look just for a second

(30:06):
to think about that, right the Steve Kerr. The last
two minutes of that game. From a fan's perspective, just
watching is about as exciting a couple of minutes as
you could possibly have watching Lebron and Steph and KD
and Booker, who a lot younger than those guys. But
watching those guys play at the top of their capabilities,

(30:27):
playing with all kinds of pressure making big shots. Lebron
is getting to the rack when he wanted to. Steph
is hitting threes that are bouncing off the rim, up
and down and in. And it's one of those yelling
at the television moments those last couple of minutes, and
that was that was some kind of experience today, just
for five minutes ago. Oh my goodness, this is unreal.
So you can spend five minutes doing that before you say, oh,

(30:48):
why didn't Jason Data play? I can't believe Jason Datu
didn't play? They didn't play. Again, it's okay to be
a fan for five minutes. Better hot take about who's
not playing than actually winning the game. Are you kiddingme?
On what business are you in? It's it's okay to
be a fan because everybody listening your fans, they're all fans.
They don't want to hear bears, they don't want to
hear Oh, the bronze medal game, My kid's good. At

(31:10):
two o'clock in the morning, I'm not watching this Olympics
ever again. This is awful. Dare they put the bronze
medal game on? Dare they? I was just talking about
a programming here. I can't believe committed on two o'clock
in the got four hours to talk here. Believe I
can have a side look, if you could talk Syracuse,
I could take a side side view of what we're

(31:33):
doing here. But right now, let's find out what's trending
in the wide world of sports. From special delivery Steve
to Seger, who will play free falling during every update
in honor of the Braves free falling through the standings
now behind the Mets for the final wildcard.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
And to which I say so, they're gonna make the playoffs.
And then this pitching staf is gonna be in the
playoffs for the Atlanta Braves.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
Today, Maltz, Avery, Lavin Maddox, come on, it's gonna be fantastic.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
Charlie Morton was down nothing in the third today Yay,
Atlanta lost at home sixteen to seven to Milwaukee, while
the Mets won nine to one at Colorado. And yes,
the White Sox fired manager Pedro Grifol. They've named Grady
Sizemore as their interim skipper.

Speaker 1 (32:14):
The Olympic News.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
US men's basketball came back to beat Serbia ninety five
ninety one to advance to Saturday's gold medal game. Steph
Curry with thirty six points from three point range. He
was nine for fourteen in the last eight minutes of
this one. The US outscored him twenty eight to thirteen,
getting back to back threes with under seven and a
half minutes to go. Joel Embiid with three straight field

(32:36):
goals and a free throw. Steph Curry then a three
pointer for the lead. With under two and a half
minutes left. Lebron a rebound and a fast break layup Curry,
a steel at a layup Curry with two late free throws.
Ninety five ninety one the final, and Lebron James finished
with a triple double. France won at semi final, edging
Germany seventy three to sixty nine. Sidney McLoughlin Lebroni won

(32:57):
the gold again in the four hundred hurdles. Noah Lyles
finished third in the two hundred meter final. After testing
positive for COVID this week, he will miss tomorrow's relay
two NFL exhibitions Tonight, New England seventeen to three over Carolina,
A combined eighteen punts in that one. Giants beat Detroit
fourteen to three. Eric Gray two touchdown runs, a combined

(33:19):
seventeen penalties in that game. The Falcons placed wide receiver
Rondel More on injured reserve. He's out for the season.
Two late games in the Major leagues at Seattle, Brian
Wu had a perfect first four innings. He's now given
up a hit in the fifth. Tigers at Mariners scoreless,
top of the fifth, Phillies at Diamondbacks scoreless, top of
the fifth. Toronto beat Baltimore seven to six, Angels over

(33:41):
the Yankees in the rain nine to four, ten inning
wins for the Reds and Giants. Padres won their fifth straight.
Chichi Rodriguez has passed away. The golf legend was eighty
eight born in Puerto Rico. Back in the nineteen thirties,
he was an eight time PGA Tour winner and Sham
Sharadia of The Athletic reports that the NBA Chris Smith's
day game schedule for the upcoming season. We'll start with

(34:03):
the Knicks hosting the Spurs and then have Timberwolves at
Mavericks seventy six ers at Celtics on Christmas, then Lakers
at the Warriors, and Nuggets at the Sun's ap, pointing
out that for the Warriors this would be their twelfth
straight season playing on Christmas, but for Sacramento in Northern California,
this would be twenty one straight years not playing Christmas.

(34:24):
No other franchise has gone longer than that, except for Charlotte,
which has never had a Christmas Day game.

Speaker 1 (34:30):
Back to you, it's okay. You get Christmas with your family.
Everybody wins. Either you play or you don't play Christmas Day.
It's how it goes. Thank you, Steve. The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Carmen Locke and the Tirec dot Com Studios.
We got that big Jerry Jones story coming up, but
straight ahead, the biggest story of the day from the
Olympics that I am going to call shenanigans on. Yeah,
that story that's next right here, Jason I Mike Fox.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten p Eastern seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon
Live from the tirack dot Com Studios, Big NFL story
on the way in about ten minutes. But I'm telling you, man,
there's there's some shenanigans going on with everything revolving around
Noah Lyles today. Uh yo. Look, he doesn't win the
men's two hundred. He comes in third, and right after

(35:26):
he finishes his race today, Look, he's become one of
the big stars of the Olympics. Very polarizing. Some people
love him, some people don't like the fact that he
is very open about his his own abilities. Sure, Basma
went back, we don't play for brons here. They all
hate him. But he loses his race and then immediately

(35:46):
after he has looked at on the track, he's putting
a wheelchair. They put a mask over him and it's
revealed that he was diagnosed with COVID two days ago.
And I saw that at my first thought was Okay,
it's the Olympics, and I get that he was gonna race.
I wouldn't want him to not race. It's outdoors. We

(36:08):
know so much more about COVID now, but this should
be something that was made public before after the race
was over, right, because here he is coming out and
here he is coming out and he's jumping around like
crazy for his introduction, runs the race. Then he's hugging
guys after the race is over, and I'm like, dude,
And now I find out you, dude, don't hug me

(36:29):
if you have COVID. I don't want you to hug
me if they're no matter what you feel about where
we are as far as wearing masks, not wearing masks,
no one wants to be hugged by someone with COVID.
And and the fact that this I felt like this
was held onto and NBC and oh, now we have
the story. We're gonna reveal everybody that he had COVID. Okay,
no one's gonna say, don't compete, but just be smart

(36:51):
about it, right, be smart, don't hug people? And how
much did COVID really affect you when you're jumping around
like that on the track, And it just the way
this was dealt with was just really awkward and hand handed.
And I felt like, when an athlete has COVID that
that should be something that has made no to the
competitors other people, at least before the race. There should
be some kind of decision. And I would have want

(37:12):
him to race. Of course I would, and I think
all the competitors would say, yes, allow him to race.
We're not going to get COVID. Just don't come over
and hug me. I want to issue. Okay, walk, I mean,
but right after it's done, it's a mask and a
wheelchair and I'm like, he was just jumping around like
a crazy guy when he comes out for his introduction,
loving the introduction. Then he comes in third and now,
oh yeah, he had COVID two days ago, and here

(37:33):
he is able to race. Okay. I don't know that
COVID really affected him, because clearly he was able to
race really well, look barely lost. I mean, this is
not where all of a sudden he came up halfway
through the race coughing and he couldn't finish it. So
I'm not saying yet, but he looked like he ran
pretty well and then all of a sudden to run
with the here's the COVID story after I'm like, oh, this,

(37:53):
this should have been this should have been that, this
should have been known before you test positive for COVID. Okay,
that should be something at least other people knew about.
The competitors know that, like behind the scenes like I
haven't seen any I don't know, but not you know,
look we get it caught up in the moment and
you run through it and all. But he's also a guy.

(38:14):
He posted what was it a couple of days ago
talking about you know, anxiety, depression, but also adding you
know about allergies and asthma, and then you're at severe
risk for severe COVID and so you get the heroic
side of Hey, he ran with all of this for
his country, for himself and mettled. Or if you make

(38:39):
it known before the race and this becomes part of
the coverage, it's that polarizing that it probably takes away
from the event itself, as opposed to here he is
trying to meddle one more time because in the aftermath, right,
it's the old ask forgiveness versus permission kind of thing.
So he ran, You got the wheel chair, you got

(39:00):
the mask, you got all of this stuff, and he's
immediately doing interviews a little over the top, a little
over over dramatic. We came in third. Here's a wheelchair
and now here's a mask right away, but you're still
walking over doing an interview, You're still talking to you
you're fine, you know, let's make sure. Let let's make
sure we show you that he was struggling because he's
got a wheelchair. I'm like, really a wheelchair? Really? I

(39:21):
guess it always comes back to what we say for
every event you and I have covered in the decade together.
Remember it's a TV show. It was it was so
to talk about pulling the drama to a higher level.
It was so odd that that that's how, that's how
it went out, and it was and it takes away
from the moment. It takes away from the accomplishment, and

(39:42):
it makes you go, hm, just what is the wonder?
What is the COVID? Po or other people test positive
for COVID and they're playing like not like we're at
a point where we should be stopping things, but just hey,
just so you know, right, I mean justication of life.
If you go over somebody's house to watch a football game,
Oh hey, I want to let you know the somebody's
got COVID in the house. Oh oh maybe you don't
want to come, They'll be upstairs. Whatever it is. Yeah,

(40:04):
I mean you walk away feeling, oh I come over
your house to watch you don't tell me that your
wife had COVID or your husband's got COVID and we're
sitting in jail and the like. That's the thing, Like
you should at least have the respecting, the courtesy to
tell people this is what's going on. And again, don't
hug people have to race, don't dap people up after
the race is over. I mean, some of the best
medical minds are there and whatever they help they need

(40:27):
and assistance to go through the testing and policies and
procedures whatever they are, twenty four they've got them on staff.
That's I mean that really, that's just complete shenanigans with
that story exit. How about a Fresca swollen dome? Jason Smith,
Mike Carmon coming up next. Waitill we tell you what
Jerry Jones said today Fox Jason, you're in masking wheelchairs.

Speaker 2 (40:47):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 1 (40:57):
App Fox Sports ra The Jason Smith Show with My
best friend Mike Harmon. Now they're begging each other real
Opening night in the NFL. Have more football coming up
in a bit but nothing better than what we saw today,
semifinal game at the Olympics. The United States down seventy

(41:18):
five points in the fourth quarter to Serbia comes from
behind to win. It's Lebron, It's Steph, It's KD. It
was an awesome thing to watch. Now will they have
enough for France? I was worried about France in twenty
twenty eight. Now you're worried about France in twenty twenty four.
Just a couple of days with us now in the
hotline to break it all down. Longtime NBA insider Mark

(41:40):
Stein is with us. You can check them out at
the steinline. That is, at the Steinline, longtime friend of
the show, Mark, what's happening? Were you yelling at your
television like I was earlier today, late in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 5 (41:51):
I was not yelling, but definitely enthralled. Today was start
to finish awesome. France Germany was a great game too. Really,
if you love hoops, this was a very very nice
August surprise and treat to get this kind of to
get the kind of hoop we got today.

Speaker 1 (42:11):
It was an unreal ending to the game. And you
saw Steve Kerr stick with the look you had the
right guys out there in the fourth quarter, and it
was really something to watch. What did you see difference
in them in Team USA third quarter of the fourth quarter?

Speaker 5 (42:25):
I defense with this with this group, and really with
any Team USA, it's almost always going to be defense.
And I was stunned how bad the defense was in
the first three quarters. I didn't think this team needed
another wake up call after everything that happened during the
exhibition season when they played five games without Durant and

(42:48):
almost lost to South Sudan and almost lost to Germany.
But you know, we've been praising this group and reveling
and how well they've been playing, and you know, they
really were from through the first four games look like
they totally had it together. And then today because I
didn't think no, I know, there was this school of

(43:09):
thought that and maybe Serbia's whole maybe they held back
their A game, Maybe they have a bunch of secret
tactical stuff that they're going to unjail in the third
meeting after losing to the United States on July eighteenth
and in an exhibition game, and then July twenty eighth
in the team's Olympic opener, and I'm like, no chance,
no way this team is the Americans are too dialed in.

(43:32):
They don't it's you know, Serbia to not you know,
prove the adage that it's really tough to beat a
team three times. And you know what, they every ounce
of what they did. You know they that was a
true total scare that they gave the United States and legit,

(43:54):
legit could have won.

Speaker 1 (43:56):
Knock down, drag out fight. Oh for nine from three
point range. Does Carmelo Anthony get a medal for taking
them out of the game mentally in the fourth They
seem more concerned about him at times.

Speaker 5 (44:08):
I don't think he gets a medal, but he still
he still though he does have the single game Olympic
scoring record for the United States by a point because
Steph only had thirty six Melow once had thirty seven.
But man, did the US need every.

Speaker 1 (44:24):
Bit of Yeah they did. I think Melow was yelling,
don't pass it to Steph, don't pass it the stuff.
But somebody else, somebody else, you know, one of the
things that you know, you watch the way they close
it out, and I was really curious saying, okay, in
the fourth quarter, defensively, what is Steve kerg going to do.
He's gonna go with the young players, gonna nobody goes
with the older players who close it out and you

(44:44):
see the energy they still have and to watch Lebron
and Steff as something. But I'll tell you what Mark
I mean. Look, I mean, I know the NBA has
been playing for well over one hundred years, but I
can't believe there is anybody in the history of the
game that can hit a mid range jumper better than
Kevin Durant what he's done throughout his career. Just ice
Water every single time they need a hoops.

Speaker 5 (45:05):
They was scoreless at halftime. Like I said, today, with
such nothing went to script. I've been a huge fan
of what Germany has done the last couple of years,
and I really thought they were going to beat France today.
And you know, France was absolutely the most disappointing team

(45:27):
in the tournament through group play. You know, they beat Japan,
they needed Hatcha Mura to foul out the four point play.
You know, then Germany really pounded them when the teams
met in group play. And I just think Germany is
the second best team in the world with the group
they have, and they've been together for three years now,

(45:50):
and you know, France draws Canada and the quarterfinal, and
that was the worst draw that France could have had,
most likely for the quarterfinals. But what saved them was
a chance to completely turn things around. And you have
to give them credit they have they did, and now
with the home court advantage they have with their fans,
with all the venom that's going to becoming Joe l

(46:12):
Embiid the way, it's going to be fascinating to see
what happens in this gold medal game. I thought United
States Germany could be the best possible gold medal game
we get in terms of basketball quality, but because of
all the tension and the home court advantage that the
US is now going to have to deal with, I mean,

(46:33):
I think Saturday is going to be it's must see.

Speaker 1 (46:38):
TV to me. Yeah, I think one of the gars
you mentioned Embiid and that subplot, and then he had
the game where he's dominated for a stress like, all right,
Joel Embiid is carrying Us because he wants France, and
then there's a couple of players like wait now he's
playing the other side, what's going on here? But all
in all, a huge spot for him and you know

(47:00):
spotlight on Saturday.

Speaker 5 (47:02):
Yeah, and look, he's taken so much heat for how
he's played, his conditioning, how he's looked, and you know,
he he was shot. They don't win the game today
without him. I mean, lebron kd def Curry, Embiid, all
these guys made massive contributions. And I mean, you know
you could see Embi after the final buzzer just so

(47:25):
he's been public enemy number one over there and he
was bringing it on, waving it on, and he is
going to He's going to get you know, even you know,
he's not popular with the with all of Jason friends
at the Garden, but I think, I think what's in
store for him Saturday night in Paris is going to

(47:46):
be even louder and even more venomous. And it's going
to be interesting to kind of see how the United
States reacts in that situation. But I have to say,
you know, France's weakness is in the backcourt, and the
United States just has so many good defenders if they
like again, I can't explain where the defense was for
three quarters today. I mean it was it was such

(48:06):
a step back. And again, like I like I said,
I didn't expect it. I thought, I really thought the
US because the way these all these tournaments tend to work,
you know, the United States usually get stronger as it
goes because they've been together for a month now at least,
you know, this team was thrown together, but at least
now they've been together a month and change, and so

(48:27):
kind of the step back they took today, I wasn't
expecting that. But you also have to give Serbia tons
of credit. I mean, they shot the heck out of
it for three quarters and and you know they they
you know, they played a near perfect game, but you know,
near perfect isn't quite enough against these guys, you.

Speaker 1 (48:44):
Know, Mark watching. And I could say the one thing
for the United States, like you give Serbia all the credit.
They had the big lead, and yes they hit that
they were unconsched from behind three point range. But I
really thought the United States they should have pushed the
pace more, especially offensively in transition, Like this is a
big advantag for US. This is NBA ball where we're
up the court and before you can settle, the ball

(49:05):
goes around and hear stuff for a wide open three.

Speaker 5 (49:08):
Usually that stems from defense. And that's why again, like
when the United States is locked in defensively and applying
pressure and turning teams over like their athleticism should overwhelm
whoever they're coming up against. And that is what I expected,
because you know they've been they've been building up this

(49:28):
head of steams and you know they certainly knew Serbia
inside and out having played them twice. So you know,
today was it was a dramatic step back for three quarters.
But again, it just shows the firepower and ceiling of
this team that you know, they were down fifteen and
the swiftness with which they could erase a deficit like that.

(49:51):
And you know what, I honestly though, I think what
it also like, knockout basketball is so good to have
true one inde, anything could happen in a single game.
And this is why I'm such a critic of the
nd Season Tournament, because the nd Season Tournament is not
yet a tournament. It only gets like that in the

(50:12):
semis and finals. Sixty of the sixty seven games are
just regular season games that are counted twice. I mean,
you see today what it's like when you literally can
just be knocked out of a tournament on a bad day,
and we don't have that in the NBA. Obviously that's
the hallmark of college basketball, but it's something fun and
different that we're not used to seeing this. We're not

(50:34):
used to seeing these NBA superstars in this position and
facing this kind of danger and knowing, oh my god,
it's the fourth quarter. We're down fifteen. We are on
the brink of embarrassment, shame. I mean, so, I just
I think you're seeing the virtues of true tournament basketball.

Speaker 1 (50:53):
Mark. I gotta say, the one thing I do enjoy
is on a possession of possession basis. I have no
idea you know how the officials are going to call
anything you enjoy that, well, it just keeps me on
the edge of my seat because I don't know when
the foul call is coming. I don't know if they're
going to call it like Gaelic football, where you dribble
once every five step.

Speaker 5 (51:13):
The officiating. The officiating in FEVA can be a little inconsistent.
We're going to put.

Speaker 1 (51:19):
Charitably nicely done.

Speaker 5 (51:20):
And I don't want to get too hung up on this,
but let's I mean, you know, that's another thing you're
going to have to deal with with France playing at
home how's that game going to be called? So there's
there's still a lot of work to do for the
United States to get a fifth straight gold medal.

Speaker 1 (51:36):
He's on Twitter at the Steinline. That is, at the
Steinline Mark Stein as always, Buddy appreciated. Enjoy the games
this weekend. We'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 5 (51:45):
Sounds good, guys, to be good.
