Speaker 1 (00:50):
So uh, we'll have more on the US men's basketball
team going for the gold medal, and it's about fifteen
hours from now, coming up in a twenty minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
But I want to tell this story before because I
saw this today before.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
We get into the absolute clown show that looks likes
coming this year with Dean Sanders in Colorado.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
So did you see today.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Skip Bayless who just left Fox Sports One Undisputed a
week ago. Well he was no longer with Fox Sports one,
all right, he's no longer fix the glitch he does.
He does a podcast and he tells this crazy story
about how when he was young covering the Dallas Cowboys,
he was worried that then Cowboys GM gil Brandt put
(01:35):
out a hit on him, like like could have him
by a legitimate hit, a legitimate hit.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Well, yeah, because he hated you, Yeah exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
And this is what like when Skip told the story,
this made me worry in retrospect, even though you know,
gil Brandt is no longer with us, uh, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
He tells the.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Story that when he was covering the Cowboys, he had
done an article on Tony dor Set and his holdout
for money and gil brand apparently was really mad about it,
and he had heard through different sources the hotel he
was staying at he was worried that someone was gonna
come knocking on his door and something was gonna happen
to be sent by gil Brandt. Because gil Brandt was
someone who would bug people's rooms.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
He would, you know.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Try to find out what they were saying to their agents.
That was what was rumored for him while he was
running the Dallas Cowboys. So here he is worried that,
I mean, they may put out a hit on me.
I don't, I don't really know say something. I go,
come on, man, Gilbrandt putting out in on Skip Palace
and I'm like, well, wait a minute. Gil Brandt did
not like me when when when I worked an NFL
network because he didn't think I should have been writing
(02:35):
a college football mock draft.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
That I wrote.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
You yeah, and he and he confronted me about at
the super Bowl and uh, you know, and and and
you know, in the end, like we wound up being freends.
He followed me on Twitter. I followed him back. Everything
was fine, but he was really mad at me. Didn't
know why I was. I was writing this this column
that I shouldn't be writing and I don't get what
you know this? And he was really mad at I mean,
I started thinking, wait a minute, is is uh? Did
(03:01):
I have to worry there for a while when I
was at the Super Bowl, I was going to go
back to my room and something could have happened to me,
like gil could have put out a hit on.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Me in my room with the super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Wait a minute, Like did I escape at the Super
Bowl and ten years ago. Now I'm thinking back today,
going what did I do? Did anybody follow me? Did
anybody come to my room for stuff? Did I order
room service? Did I say, oh, this doesn't taste right
and it didn't drink the whole thing?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Like, I don't know. It really does make you think.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
I mean, he always had an entourage around that he
would you know, he had confidants and whispered and look
you went and said, you know, hey, he's no longer
with us. Doesn't mean he didn't leave debts to still
be paid. So I mean, for you, you gotta be careful, buddy.
I know I was worried for it that could survive him,
(03:48):
I know I was.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
But literally, if all you had to do was have
some half assed system on a sheet of paper, and
he probably would have left you alone. He would have
said your system sucked and he would have moved on.
As to look, man, they assigned me this division.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
What do you want from me?
Speaker 4 (04:06):
Which I believe was the answer you gave him. This
is my assignment, this is what they asked me to do.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Jason Meso Metso, I mean, yeah, Gil Brandt, look at
the reputation of the guy overall.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
But yeah, I mean, you know, some Nixonian kind of
rumors in terms of how the GM role was just played.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Uh, some of.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Which would have been uh, you know, perpetuated by Skip Bayless,
because let's face it, he also said some other things
in Dallas that you know, many many years later, you
still have beef with a lot of folks over and
and some some hot take nonsense through the years that
got him in trouble. Hell, Chris Carter hates him, mate,
You saw that except when it came don shrink of
(04:51):
checks because well, but then he came on Fox.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Anyway, right, I'm never gonna work with that guy again. Hey,
they they got a check for you.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
You want to come, he'ld your us next. So Chris
Carter not exactly a guy you believe either.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
But either way, storytelling at the forefront here and Jason
who may have had an ex NFL GM looking to
take him out.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
That's good stuff. I like that. Put that in the book.
Jason Smith was lucky. I go through wrong room that night.
I did not know they told me fifth floor. It
was fourth floor. He was lucky.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
He lives in broadcast to this day because I had
room wrong on assignment from Gilbrandt.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Did you have room service?
Speaker 5 (05:33):
Now?
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Are you here to kill me?
Speaker 5 (05:34):
No?
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Chocolate cake? Oh, come on in, come on in. You
got chocolate cake?
Speaker 5 (05:38):
Right it?
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Yeah? Who throws? Honestly? Odd job?
Speaker 5 (05:47):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Nicely done. Yeah, let's kip a bowler going.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Oh sure, so again, just something I was thinking about
today that avoided I really did.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
I did something? Was that?
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Something almost happened to me? Here's a but he did so, Jason?
I mean, did you? Is it over or does someone
else have the list?
Speaker 5 (06:04):
No?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Wow?
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Maybe maybe suddenly it's maybe you're not out of the
woods here, pal, Just gotta wait a little bit, just
gotta wait a little bit. They see Now I was
fine until you told me that. Now I'm gonna be
looking over my shoulder everywhere.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
I can. You watch a lot of movies. You right right?
Speaker 1 (06:22):
You write books. I mean, here's a book for you.
We just gave you a whole novel to write. I
just have to start telling people who are you all?
Speaker 3 (06:29):
My name is Mike Harmon h A R M O N. Yeah.
I'm gonna start dressing like you.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
I mean, like when Jin did that to Dwight in
the office to play the choke on question, what kind
of bear is the most powerful?
Speaker 3 (06:39):
False? It's a black bear.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Like I'll start dressing like you, wearing wearing jaunty hats
and purple shorts and talking about Northwestern and saying that
is right. I'll start doing all that, and then this
is this is Mike Harmon. I don't know what happened
to Jason. Okay, must be the other. You gotta start
yelling out, stand up, so outside, outside, stand.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Up, stand up.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
I was watching the White Sox. It comes just sitting
down since we've gotten down this rabbit hole. Ben Attende
makes a great play where he throws out a runner
trying to score.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
They go on the the broadcast. They cut to a
commercial as they're doing.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
The replay of what was one of the best, probably
the highlight of the White Sox season.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Here it is for whatever fast food chain, like really.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
And then he come talking to on the phone exactly
and then they come back and he leads off the
bottom of the fifth and hits a home run.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
You would have thought they were falling out of the booth.
They were so excited.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Look at the heart and the fight in this White
Sox squad.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
And she'll like it too, baby.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Rounding third and heading home. Look, hey, welcome to Sonic.
Wait where is the play?
Speaker 3 (07:45):
What happened to the play?
Speaker 4 (07:46):
You can get all these combinations of she's and drinks
anytime of day, and your shakes are half price.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Oh boy good.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon live in the
tirec dot Com studios.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
A few minutes.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Here on what went on today at Colorado as Deon
Sanders Happy birthday, Deon Sanders fifty seven years old. Yeah, uh,
kicking all the junk wax hero in the sports card world.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Junk wex hero.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Had his first news conference, like you're kicking off the
second season with a big news conference, and also became
a grandfather. So a pretty big day for Deon Sandy
right turn fifty seven, became a grandfather, had his first
news conference. This news conference was pretty friendly off the top,
and then Dion just got mad for the next half hour.
(08:38):
Many testing moments. He was very upset with questions that
came from a CBS affiliate because CBS network is closely
aligned with twenty four to seven Sports, who had the
big story this past summer about Shiloh Sanders and his bankruptcy,
so that was a big thing, and.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Diond happened didn't yet, didn't want to let them answer questions.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
He got combative, He got upset when people asked him, Hey,
you bolstered your offensive line.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
What has bolstered mean? Say?
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Improved? I never used that word before. What's chemistry? What
are you talking about? And we're talking when he was
asked about the offensive lines chemistry. As they get ready
for their open or North Dakota State uh, shutting down
other questions before they're even asked, before his sons jump
on stage and tell them, Hey, it's your birthday. How
do you feel about becoming a grandfather? And then they
start talking about Dion becoming a grandfather, and and and
(09:27):
and it's it's it's Shiloh is there doing They're all saying,
wait a minute, I don't think our sister wants us
to let everybody know that that jet she had the
baby doesn't matter.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
We've talked about it.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Dion saying how blessed he is that that he's a
grandfather on his birthday, and and again the other kids
keep saying, I don't think she.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Wanted this out there. Now it's fine, it's.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Fine this tell I mean, I mean, I look at
this and I go, what a clown show this is
gonna be this year? What an absolute clown show this
is gonna be this year at Colorado? Like this is
your opening press conference where you can ant just take
five minutes ago, Okay, everything's cool. No, no, no, everything
is a fight. Everything is you're doing me wrong. And
(10:08):
here I am and I'm running this program and here's
my kids who are out up up here on the
day is with me, and it's just an absolute clown show.
Like everything with Colorado, it's like at some point you
got to get past the style because there's a lot
of style. There's a lot of style, there's a lot
of chemist, there's a lot of surface he stuff at
Colorado that makes you the boy, what a great place,
(10:30):
And then you get to the substance. You see many
people transferring and they don't win games, and Dion's very
short and he's not happy with his team a lot,
and you hear the stories of different players out of
the coaches yell at them, and you wonder what the
atmosphere is like. And then here's your beginning of the
season press conference where you're getting the most vanilla questions
in the world. Hey, you bolsted your offensive line? Why
would you say that? Like, he gets upset when someone
(10:51):
says bolstered? Right, Oh, how do you feel about the kemp?
What do you mean about chemistry? Like what's going on here? Oh,
I'm upset about this report that came out earlier on
this summer. Okay, So this says what it's going to
be like. Every day with Colorado must seem like a month,
and it's got to be like that for the players too,
because you look, I don't care who you are. And
Travis Hunter was supposed to be there today and he
said no, he declined to go, Like I don't care
(11:14):
who you are. At some point you look up and go,
you know, this is my life at Colorado, this is
my football life.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
Like I have.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
I have goals and dreams too, And I feel like
I'm just here as part of this show, as part
of this Dion and his kids show and whoever he
wants to really be positive for and and like, is
this what I want to be doing? Like I want
to I want to go somewhere I know the coach
is looking out for me number one, and not here
it is and here's my kid, and here's everything else.
And I'm I'm worried about stuff going on with different
different outlets who write stuff about my kids. I'm like,
(11:43):
this is a this is a garden variety beginning of
the season press conference. Everybody's just asking questions about the year,
and this is where it's at. It's exhausting Colorado and
Dion is exhausting. It's it's exhausting to hear. It's exhausting
to hear these stories. And we're still, you know, a
good two three weeks away from the beginning of the
season where he's gotta win or this is gonna be
(12:04):
his last year in Boulder, Like they're not gonna go
through this again, they go through all of this again because,
like we said a couple couple hours ago, we talked
about how Team USA men's basketball looks like a youth
team now because of the controversy with Jason Tatumu's mom
saying why isn't my kid playing? Colorado seems like a
youth travel team where the coach is coaching because his
kids are playing and he's coaching his kids. And those
(12:25):
are the ones you hear about, and a couple other
ones but then there's all kinds of other drama going
on because he can't handle everything else. And you're hearing
stories from players that are saying, it's not about me,
it's not about the team, it's about him, and you
wonder just what is this?
Speaker 5 (12:37):
This is?
Speaker 1 (12:38):
This seems like a youth sports team, like a good
traveling youth sports team. And the reason they're good is, well,
the guy's a good coach and he's coaching his kids,
and his kids are pretty good, and his kids the
quarterback and the like. It's just like any travel team,
whether it's soccer or softball already. Yeah, well the coach, yeah,
he's kind of out there, but his kid's the starting pitcher,
and hey, pitcher's pretty good. So that's why we we
(13:00):
move on and we keep going, and scouts come to
the game, so that's why we're involved in this. I mean, really,
at some point, Colorado's gotta just just someone's got to
throw the emergency break and just say, Dean, can we
just go play games? Can we just go play games
and win? Can we go without you inciting stories or
getting involved in some kind of drama for a week.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Can we have that going on? Because that's how we're
gonna win football games.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
I just don't understand why everything's and you know, I
get us versus them to a point. We were talking
about it before finding your motivation, finding your rallying cry
and all whatever else. Dion just needs a hug at
this point, man, it's like, why are you mad at
these guys? Like to the CBS reporter, he's like, look,
that was a national thing. I cover stuff here in Denver,
(13:44):
doesn't matter. That's who you work for. He did a
whole thing. If I'm looking you in the eye, it's like, no,
you're not.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
You're wearing these giant elvis like av the sunglasses.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
That are covering up your face as you're looking at him.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
So you got that. And then at Denver, Postcard goes
to ask a question and he goes, quote, why do
you not like us?
Speaker 3 (14:04):
You don't like us? Man?
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Why do you do this to yourself? Why are you
hitting yourself? Why are you hitting Yourself's.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Making me hit myself?
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Mom?
Speaker 4 (14:14):
No, I'm serious, Sanders pressed on, and then the guy
kind of he goes, look, it's only about football and
told him to beat it.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
So you have that. And it's just an absolute mess
at every turn.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
And you know, when you do these things, you get
a lot of clicks on the stories.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
So it's it's a self fulfilling cycle.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
If you just went to coaching football and playing football
instead of being combative with everybody, you know, I think
more folks would leave you alone. But once the salacious deals,
details of transfers and others start to come out, you're
just opening it up for more exit.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
How about a Fresca exit swollen down The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Carmen live from the tirec dot Com Studios.
I mean, it just feels like a clown show is
ready to erupt, and it's already underway in Colorado.
Speaker 3 (15:01):

Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with mom My
best Friend, Mike.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Harmon Hobo live from the tiraq dot com studios.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
Just about fifteen hours from now, the United States goes
for the gold medal against France in basketball.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Oh boy, is this gonna be fun? How's it gonna
play out?
Speaker 1 (16:16):
No one better to talk to than Fox Sports One,
NBA Inside or Extraordinary. You can follow him on Twitter
at Rick Bucker. That is at Rick Buker and Rick.
I don't want to be the first person to break
this to you, but I just saw on the internet
Jason Tatum's mom is unhappy with the way you've been
covering Team USA.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
How do you respond to that?
Speaker 5 (16:38):
You know, as a mom, she's allowed to have her
feelings and to speak out on behalf of her kid,
But come on, Mom, let's not get greedy. You got
you got an NBA ring. Let's let's let's see's up.
Letting Lebron have his time. Lebron and Steph and Kad
the old thirty somethings. This is the last go round.
(16:58):
Sometimes you just gotta wait your turn. And that's that's
what JT has had to do, uh for the championship
and and now for a meaningful role on on on
Team USA. So Mom, I feel you. I hope I
still get an invitation to dinner. But you know, sometimes
(17:20):
our kids just have to learn hard less than and
one of them is patients.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
Okay, Rick, you know, I thought this was one of
the few times where the families didn't need to get involved,
because there's plenty of people who've taken to protests and
rooting against the men's team and Steve Kerr for what
he's done.
Speaker 5 (17:41):
Yeah. Yeah, it is kind of crazy that our the
team for one of the one of the first times
that I can remember where the egos and the kind
of the disgruntlement within the team of how they feel
about what their roles are like. These guys have done
(18:03):
such a great job of sharing all that KD coming
off the bench, not saying a word. Jason Tatum logging DNPS.
He hasn't said a word. You know, guys, minutes have
gone up and down, Joe LMB gets a DMP like,
they've all rolled with it. And I believe it's because
they understand that the challenge in front of them is
(18:25):
not as simple as people over here think it is.
You know, there's people who are like, you can't get
Jason Tatum minutes. No, you can't, you can't, you can't
get you can't, like just voluntarily give some a guy minute.
And I will say this too in all seriousness, like,
it's not that Jason didn't get the opportunity in the
(18:45):
run up games to demonstrate that he was indispensable to
this team winning. He started at least two or three
games if I'm not mistaken, and through the first three
or four he was. He was in the regular rotation
if he wasn't starting, so and and look in watching
those games, was he a contributor? Yeah, But it wasn't
(19:07):
like he didn't stand out like Derek White stood out
where he's like, wow, this guy, you know, he was
a last he was a late addition. But he has
to play Drew Holliday he has to play. Where he
lost out is that stef Curry didn't always look great,
Lebron didn't always look great. But those guys are are
(19:27):
are going to play regardless. That's just the reality of it.
They're they're they're the veterans on this team and the
leaders on this team, and you weren't going to DNP them.
And then I think the other part is is that
KD came in and he just he had an immediate impact.
And that's probably where most of Jason where Jason got
(19:48):
kind of xed out as just KD has played such
a big role. If anybody out there says, you know
what you should give Anthony Edwards minutes to Jason Tatum,
I'd actually listened to you in that part, because I
think A has been has been spectacular times and he's
been lo's far from that at other times. But I
don't think people out there are thinking we want Aunt
(20:11):
to have fewer minutes and Jason Tatum to play. They're
thinking like the Derek Whites and maybe Joe l Embiid
and they're really they're not looking at this as pieces
to a puzzle that have to fit in order for
this team to be successful, or maybe they're thinking he
should be because he was trading off with Devin Booker.
(20:32):
Devin Booker has demonstrated that he can play a role
along side Lebron and Steph and be tremendously effective as
a role player. And it's no fault of Jason, but
Jason's just not the same player if he doesn't have
the ball in his hands, and with this particular team,
(20:53):
he's not going to have the ball in his hands.
And it really comes down to how good of a
complimentary player he is. And there's just more guys on
this team. Devin book are probably having made the biggest transformation.
There's guys on this team that are role players and
know how to play that role. And then there are
a couple of guys like the Bam out of Bios
and the Devin Bookers who are not role players traditionally
(21:17):
or historically in the NBA, and they've demonstrated that they
can be excellent role players on this team. So that's
where Jason is lost out in all seriousness, Like if
he'd never gotten a shot, I'd say, you know what,
he's got a case to be made. But everybody got
a look, they looked at the combinations. It's not Jason
in particular, it's the combinations that that work, and he
(21:42):
just happened not to be particularly valuable with a certain combination,
and that's why he's he's been on the fringe.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
You know, Rick, I look at this game tomorrow and
I'm okay, Francis, this is the United States is a
bad matchup for France because what gave the United States
trouble against Serbia the outside shooting bout. Dadavich is able
to knock stuff down. Jokic was more of a facilitator.
That's not what France is. And I would be stunned
(22:11):
if the United States doesn't blow the doors off of
France unless the Scott Foster type France officiating type games happening.
Foster's officiating with a real, you know, a French mustache,
and no one knows it's him, and he's fouling everybody
out in the first.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Quarter of the game.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
Outside of that, I would be surprised if it's not
the United States by twenty tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (22:31):
I tend to agree with you. It's hard for me
to make an analytical case as to why France should
win tomorrow. They shoot forty four percent overall as a team.
The United States shoots forty five percent as a team
(22:52):
just from three point range. We average like one hundred
and eighty. We average close to thirty more points per
game than they do. So look, if France a really
good defensive team, yes they are, and that's how they've
won games. But I'm with you, they don't shoot three
(23:14):
very well. And that's really been the equalizer and the
deciding factor in so many of these, so many of
these games. And we know what with Team USA has
done shooting the three. And now Steve Kerr decided and
clearly he knows that too because he's now starting KD
in place of through holiday. Is the report, which means
(23:37):
they're just going to be loaded with shooters coming out
of the gate, And yeah, I would expect that. It
is This is the caveat. This is the one caveat
is the fact that it is the Olympics, it is
one game, it is in France, and so the crowd
is going to be nuts as a result. These they're
(23:59):
players are going to be nuts. So they're going to
be playing out of their minds and the atmosphere is
going to be crazy. There's probably going to be a
period of time where a team USA is going to
have to weather that, but I would expect that they
will and ultimately ultimately get the job done. And again
(24:21):
like it's where it's where we started. Like what has
impressed me most about this team is that everybody parked.
They didn't pack their egos, they didn't bring their NBA
egos with them, And especially in beating Serbia, like you
had yet Steph who's used to, Oh, we're behind, we
gotta we gotta win, get me the ball.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
You got KD.
Speaker 5 (24:43):
Same mindset, Lebron, same mindset. You had any number of
guys out there who are used to put it on
my shoulders and I'll go get us a win. And
they found a way to collect, to lead, get everybody involved,
get everybody shot, make everybody a threat. And I just
(25:06):
don't know that if they hadn't taken that approach that
they would have had enough to come back and ultimately
win it. Even Lebron, like the first half of the
fourth quarter he was guarding Jokic, which is something I
suggested that the Lakers should have done against the Nuggets,
because then it left mbter A d as a roaming
(25:27):
shot blocker against Jokic and as well as everybody else.
And so I just I just really am impressed and
admire and respect the fact that that while everybody over
here is jawing about who's playing and who's not playing
and who's starting and all of that stuff, these guys
(25:48):
have really looked at it and said, you know what,
we just want to win. How are we going to win? Steve,
this is what you want us to do, Okay, we'll
We'll go do it. And so far it's worked.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
Rick two bar class both Joel embiid one concern of
the officiating as related to him, and the second part
is he's a big w WE fan, you know, the
degeneration X chop. What if it's all work and he
actually sides with Team France and turns heel on us
in the middle of a game.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
Man, I love I love the thought of that. But
I think that I think that MB knows better at
this point. I mean, he's clear, although I will say,
you know what he's He's sewn a great WWE storyline
out there with the red herring of maybe I'll go
(26:41):
play for Cameron about it? Right, So it's like, oh,
he's a thought them and then he's gonna double back.
It would be so how good would it be if
he's running out in one of those French blue uniforms
and maybe like and maybe was like one of those
little pencil mustaches and a chapeau, if you will, like, Oh,
(27:08):
how good would that be?
Speaker 2 (27:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (27:10):
I like I like that idea. Maybe carrying a bag? Yet?
Can I? Can I carrying any further? Or am I
going farough?
Speaker 3 (27:20):
He takes the bag, he smatches Lebron over the head.
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
See that that's work the mind, because I'm just I'm
just sitting here thinking of you know, Steve Kerr and
Spolstra and lou and Mark Few are out to dinner
and they go, hey, guys, let's toast. It wasn't always perfect.
We made it to the gold medal game. I know,
players were upset. We had to weather Tatum, We had
to weather and beat. It's just a few more hours
(27:45):
till we win.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
The gold and then it's over. And then they all
go to toast and they all check their.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Phones and see Jason Tatum's mom wants to know why
he's not playing, says it's unacceptable.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
Yeah, you know, here's the thing I don't do we do.
We really need to know what Jason Tatum's mom think. Like,
if you're making that call, if you're reaching out to
missus Tatum, you're shooting fish in a barrel.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Yeah right, you know.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
No, you know what, He's having a lovely summer. I'm
glad he's had a chance to visit Paris, I know.
I mean, no, the chance his time will come. Like
you're you're asking, You're asking for someone to have that
kind of reaction, and quite honestly, I just it would
(28:44):
be It would mean I would be more okay with
it in all and in all honesty if it happened afterwards.
It's also what I don't like about MB talking about
playing for cameraon in l A, Like, yeah, I know,
you guys are good place. I know you just had
a big win. The job's not done, so like any
(29:06):
distractions at this point is not a positive.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
It's not moving.
Speaker 5 (29:11):
That's great for us, there's something to talk about until
you know football tomorrow. But the reality is like, no,
we don't need you don't need any side storyline. There's
forty eight hours between between games, and somehow we managed
to manufacture two distracting stories what Jason Tatum's mom is
(29:33):
being upset about him not playing, and Joel Embiid thinking, yeah,
you know, this US thing's all right, but I think
I'd rather play for Cameray, Like, what do we can
We just get the gold and then we can do
all this Sime. That drives me a little crazy.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
He's on Twitter at Rick Buker, that is at Rick
Buker check out. Is on the Ball podcast as well.
Rick is always buddy, appreciate it, man, enjoy the game tomorrow.
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 5 (29:58):
My pleasant gentlemen, They're the best.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
That's my guyer. See he liked my thought though, huh,
he loved it. No, it was great, dude. I loved that.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
And then he went over the top of the baguette
and he's he's throwing the baguette to fans pieces, he's
breaking up pieces, throwing the fans.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
I got Joellen beats baguette.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
Let's find out what's trending in the wide world of
sports right now From a guy who once stole a
baguette from a French restaurant never brought it back.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
It's Steve de Sager tripped over one of those chaps.
Speaker 8 (30:27):
Yeah, the pay at pay with the baguette.
Speaker 3 (30:31):
That would be very tranch.
Speaker 8 (30:33):
By the way, the US men play Saturday's gold medal
game in Paris against France. France made the final three
years ago in Tokyo, had lost to the US after
beating the Americans in the opener of the tournament. In
twenty twenty one, the US had to come back to

meter hurdles. Three NFL exhibitions tonight wins for Miami, Houston

the last three games, and one to more.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
The Cubs beat the.
Speaker 8 (32:59):
White Sox seven to six. Saint Louis and Milwaukee with wins.
Colorado sent Atlanta to a six straight loss six to five.
Arizona with a solo homer bottom of the night edge
Philadelphia three to two, and a great night for Minnesota.
The Twins are now just a game and a half

Speaker 3 (34:43):
Well, I will David Fizdale. It was the.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
First, well the second night of the first real NFL weekend.
We had three games going on tonight, we had two
last night, we had everything else. Tomorrow I get to
wake up in less than twelve hours and watch the Jets.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Oh, it's so exciting, Mike harm But it's exciting.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Bears, bills, get chargers, getting after it. Rossberg's fired up,
you know, relentless enthusiasm, maybe all of that.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
You know, we've been building to it. For quite some time.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
We've got hard knocks playing in the in the background,
and away we go.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
There are three games tonight and there are three big stories,
one out of each game. Let's deal with what went
on tonight with the Texans and the Steelers. First, from
the Texans side of it. We got quarterback stuff coming
up in about ten minutes. The Texans win tonight twenty
to twelve. We'll get to the Justin Fields angle of
it all through that. But here's the thing. The biggest
(35:44):
highlight of the night.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
C J.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
Stroud got to play a little bit Tank Della's back
after his injury last year that really hurt them because
he was so good. He was borderline uncoverable at times
last season. And big highlight c J Stroud and it's
Tank Dell. Dell wiggles his way into the end zone
like he never left. Thirty yard touchdown here, Cub the Texans.
(36:08):
I'll tell you this, I love the Texans this year.
I love the Texans. How much do you love the
tech Not only not only are are they a team
that showed you you can really flip the script in
one year.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Just got to get the quarterback right. Everything else falls
into place.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
The additions they made this offseason were needed additions, not
just well we did this. No, they need a little
bit more leadership. They need a little bit more stability
in the running game. They got that. I love the
Texans this year. Their division stinks, it's absolutely awful. I
don't believe in the Jaguars. I don't believe in the Colts.
I don't think Anthony Richmond can stay healthy. I love
(36:46):
the Texans this year. You just dismissed Will Levis. I
am not stop. I am not picking the Texans for
the Super Bowl or the NFC Championship Game. As much
I told you how much I love them, but I'm
not doing it because every body else is going to
and I'm not just gonna follow the crowd.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
There, wait a minute, Jason all the time.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
No, no, no, I'm not gonna because they're the big
trendy pick and everybody's gonna take them.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
Everyone's gonna take the Texans, and everyone's gonna take the Packers.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
That's gonna be the big trendy super opt Well, here's
two teams have made the playoff. They're young, their quarterbacks
are young, they're good. I'll pick them this year. No,
I'm not gonna do it. I'm not gonna do it.
I know, I go why I feel like I'm not.
I don't get scared off of anything. But I'm not
doing it simply because everybody else is gonna pick the Texans,
So why am I gonna do that. Maybe I'll pick
the Jets, Maybe I'll pick the Bengals. Maybe I'll pick
the Jets, but I am not. I love the Texans,
(37:35):
but I am not picking them.
Speaker 4 (37:37):
See, I'll use the word because I like it. They
bolstered their offense. Don't say bolstered. Deon Sanders does not
like that word.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
Well, he's not inviting me to any any dinner meeting
anytime soon.
Speaker 3 (37:49):
Anyway.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
They bolstered the offense, digs and mix and come ins
veteran presence and with Stefan Diggs. Eventually he'll be mad
at everybody. But you got at least one year grace
period there, and you already had you know, Dell returning Schultz,
already there a good rising squad.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
So yeah, it overweighted.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
It's like me, what I was still saying, stay with
the Chiefs, right, the betting odds said stay with the
Chiefs last year.
Speaker 3 (38:16):
But everybody else jumped off. Ah, it's terrible. It looks awful.
Defense was really good, and they still.
Speaker 1 (38:22):
Have that Mahomes guy. When it's all said and done,
give me the Chiefs. Well there you go with the Texans.
It's overweighted, so it's the old isaag while everybody else
is going in that direction, right, because as we know,
the general public is stupid. So if they're going on
in one direction, you run for the hills. And as
(38:44):
much as you may like Stroud and everything else, Yeah,
I think the division is going to be better than
most and a lot more cannibalization throughout. Jaguars will be better,
Titans will be better. Colts Richardson, however many games you get.
I hope it is. I hope it is, but I
don't see it. The Texans were just that good. They
look they have the right head, coach of the right quarter.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
They hit it. They hit it right. If they won
the lottery.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
They hit it right with the coach, they hit it
right with the quarterback. It's like there's teams that are
waiting twenty years just to hit it right with one
of those things, and in one year it's bag.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
We got the coach, We got the quarterback. We're all good.
Why you make fun of my team like that?
Speaker 1 (39:23):
Why I'm sorry, buddy, I'm sorry, But hey, bag, buddy,
what about my team? My team's the same way you've
been looking for that. We finally got you rejecting I
thought you were projecting outward. He played four snaps last year.
We finally had the guy. He played four snaps.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
Well, I mean, look, the bar has been set very lough.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Coming up next, we had two big debuts tonight. A
quarterback won his first game ever in the NFL, won
his first game for a new team.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
And there is.
Speaker 1 (39:53):
Big stuff to know about both of them. That's coming
up next right here. Jason Smith, Mike Harmon, This is
Fox Sports Radio,
