Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Hey, welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show
with me Mike Harmon. Hour three of the program. On
a big Friday night Saturday morning, that means it's college
football Saturday. Out on the East Coast, folks already have
their smokers going, starting their early tailgates.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
All that I hate football. I'm done.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
I hate football, and Jason still hates football. I hope
that the hour or show that had gone by, that
maybe we'd done enough to give you some therapy and
distance you from the chaos.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
But no, the haters remains. Sorry, buddy, that's all right. Well, listen,
I had the Jets and the Mets last night. Tonight
the Mets got killed Syracuse love Okay, I you know,
I can only have nice things for so long.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
And then you get to celebrate a nice, peaceful weekend
because Syracuse has already played and lost.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
This is true.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
I said to my ife, I said, hey, all I
have to worry about this weekend of the Mets. Like
that's it, Like like, wow, Jets have played, I've done.
I can stressed free weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
No, that's not true. Though you do have Michigan, USC
and family that you're gonna need to be concerned with.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Yeah, I don't. I don't stress over Michigan.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
That yeah, I am will stress over Michigan And if
it goes badly as it might, that could make for
a long weekend for you.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Fox Sports Radio that is the Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Carmen. You are right about that.
Absolutely could be a long weekend. Who's it gonna be
a long weekend for We got more from the NFL
coming up in a bit, but right now joining us
on the hotline. No body better to break it all
down another big weekend in college football. He is the owner, editor,
proprietor of College Footballnews dot com. You're one stop shopping

(02:08):
for everything college football. All the previews, all the prognostications,
all the breakdowns, all the analysis. It is Pete few Tech.
He is on Twitter at Pete few Tech. He's got
eight hundred words coming up about how Kyle McCord is
now no longer the leader in the Heisman Trophy race.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
GeTe, what's happening?

Speaker 5 (02:26):
Wellness check yo, So your head is out of the
oven as we speak. We're good, dude.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
That was just that was just terrible. Man, that was
just awful.

Speaker 5 (02:35):
It's all right, you know, I know it stinks, but
that was that was a tough That was a tough one.
But yeah, it would have been fun. You know, Styracuse
thing's been all right. McCord is looking great so far.
So now I told you want Frans fired now right.
I mean no, no, no, no, no, no, no no. That's
how it's worse than college football. You can't lose a

(02:55):
game ever. Uh yeah, sh at home like that. So no, fired.
Absolutely was a good run.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
That was it was And Matt Rule will get fired
now after that lost tonight too, so we'll fire him
as well.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
Oh you know what here, why I hear maturity. I
really don't feel like getting honked at by Nebraska fans
because they're still by the way across the media, landscape.
I'll give you a little inside baseball that they're still playing.
That is that Nebraska is like the new Deon Sanders
in all of web world. You cannot do enough Nebraska

(03:27):
content because the fans were just crazy after three and oh.
And there's that that classic picture of bo Polini where
he's kind of looking like the guy in Fargo who
put everyone in the wood chipper his team photo, and
like the beau Polini started five and oh. In two
thousand was at thirteen and with a win over Illinois,

(03:51):
and he got fired for going nine and four. I
had a nice tweet put and I was like, you
know what, I just can't. I can't. I don't want
to hear it from Nebraska fans because they're all mad
at me and all that kind of stuff. But yeah,
great win for Illinois. Here it this way, Illinois all
of a sudden, Yeah, this is kind of good. Four
and oh starts for the Ilini.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Well, Brett Belma eventually coach every team in college football?

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Is that the plan?

Speaker 5 (04:13):
Oh? You know, it's when you know two thirds of
the earth is covered by water or the other third
by whatever the parp was over in today. I yeah,
you know, I like him. He's a good dude. It
is funny though, I remember when he first started Wisconsin,
He's about to take over for Barry Alvarez, and he was.
He's a considerably different man now. But hey, look, you

(04:35):
know he did it. He's able to put together teams
that have just enough defense. He've got a quarterback in
Luke Altmeyer. You know, it does get kind of nasty
for him in October because they you know, that's when
they get to go deal with Oregon and deal with
Michigan and that's that. But Penn State. But do you
look for right now for Illinois, You're four and oh
and that's pretty nice. Start with a win over Kansas,

(04:56):
a win at Nebraska. That's pretty good. And by the way,
in the history of sports, was there anything that was
ever more obvious than the kid was going to miss
the kick for Nebraska, you know, from short range in
a close game, like there was no way the backup
kicker was putting it. It was going to hit that
field goal because it's Nebraska. And it's just how they roll.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Talk about the hype of Nebraska and everybody getting on
board and all the signs and everything. Arch Manning now
is the superhuman and he's faster than Tyreek Hill. Can
see be big enough?

Speaker 5 (05:30):
Oh it can't be, It really can't. Look you know
it's there are a lot of great young quarterback and
we saw one Dylan Reel. I mean there is a
lot of fun there for Nebraska's there's a lot of
fun happening for and you there's a lot of good
playmakers out there, and Arch is it. You know, the
hype is real. I mean he is that good. He
is a manning. He's got all the tools and all
the talent. It's all there. Now everyone's going crazy because

(05:52):
he blew up a really bad UTSA team. This is
not the Texas San Antonio the last few years. And
you know tomorrow they're going.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
To roll a twelve conference member you two.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
Yeah coming up? God, Yeah exactly, yeah, keep your keep
your conference USA out of my mouth. It was, yeah, exactly.
So it was a good for forts. Well see, obviously
he's great, and obviously he'll be great tomorrow. But yeah,
it's like, wait a minute, quinn Ewres is actually like
a top ten overall draft pick. So I don't think

(06:25):
he'll be wellly pimped to hear anything, but It's gonna
be kind of hard if Arch goes off to be like, yeah,
you know, quinnlet's let that abdominal string. You know, it's
looks like that heel a little longer here.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Pete what I'm surprised that, you know, I'm always surprised
the things that happened, But I've never seen this before
where a guy has become the Heisman Trophy favorite and
lost his job in the same week.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Like, that's what Queen Newers is about to do right now?

Speaker 5 (06:48):
Oh, I'll put a lot. I can do this. I
was actually my first ever SEC game nineteen ninety four
Kerry Dean Florida. I was there and he throws like
eight picks again Auburn and they put in Danny Wirfole,
who went from the Heisman front runner to betch for
Danny Worfle in that game. That's That's why I'm here

(07:09):
on a Friday night. Yeah, Arry, Jerry Dan did Dany
werfle reference. That is why I'm on your show right now, dude.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
I'll do you.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
I'll you know what I see your Danny Werfel story.
I was actually a PA at ESPN that that year,
and it was a big deal. For ESPN two, I
worked on the College Football Show. They sent one of
the reporters down to interview Terry Dan and do a
story on him.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
He he front or hybrid Terry Dean.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
So we did this story and it ran like five
or six times, and he lost his chop.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
The next week.

Speaker 5 (07:41):
Yeah, like we just got.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
That story in in time for Danny.

Speaker 5 (07:45):
Wirfle to take a Hey, I've learned that lesson, get
all your hype stories in one week, because the next
week I don't quite know. Well, it's gonna look there's
a lot of he's out there like that, where you know,
have some fun with it because you know, stuff come
to rexas pretty quick for some of these teams who
all of a sudden, Hey, that was a whole lot
of fun getting there, like three and oh or four

(08:05):
and oh, Now all of a sudden you have to
actually play teams. Uh oh, the problems are coming.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Yeah, all right, how much of a day after his
Syracuse loss, is Smith's gonna have to deal with with
his family with Michigan playing Usc.

Speaker 5 (08:19):
I don't know, you know, it's it's obviously have the
hype for us. He is great. But okay, so they
beat LSU close. I always kind of think, and we've
talked about this before. You don't have preseason, so week
one games you always have to kind of throw out
because no one's in shape. It's not really representative of
anything real. Uh, you have to give it a few

(08:41):
weeks to breathe and blow at Utah State, okay, whatever.
So I am not there and just assuming that this
is just going to be a USD walk in the park,
because all right, let's see what Alex Gorgie can do.
All right, do we get the good Alex Georgie or
are we gonna get the guy who's you know, throwing
airmails and warn burners all over the place. If he
could just be like sixty percent, you know, and just

(09:03):
be decent on third downs, and if they can figure
out just run the ball. It's like a real scourge
in college football where all these offensive coordinators, you're all
Q team stuff. Every college team. The stats are unbelievable.
If you just won the ball thirty is times or so,
you will win games. And Michigan just kind of forgets,

(09:25):
Oh yeah, they got Donovan Edwards. Oh yeah, we've got
an offensive line and they're trying to throw even though
they don't have JD. McCarthy just run this play defense
and I kind of think Michigan I'm taking USC. But
I'm not just assuming this. I think this is gonna
be a little bit better than Michigan fans are thinking.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
Oh no, I got Michigan with the points definitively, like
you can see, look, the quarterback change is going to
be a big deal for them, and when while it
may not be something that lights the world on fire,
I think they'll have a better Gay Day offensively at
USC playing their first game at Michigan with this group,
it's going to be Michigan will get out quick, USC
will slowly, you know, impart their will on the game.

(10:04):
But this is going to be a close one, Pete,
I think it's gonna be. I think it's a field
goal game for USC.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
I you know, I would not be shocked by that.
I would also not be shocked if out Georgy starts
out two for nineteen and all of a sudden, the story, well,
let's be honest, between Syracuse and between you know, the
Jets being on Amazon Prime so it doesn't technically count,
and you know, it's just it's not been your weekend
so you just got to kind of assume that. You know,

(10:30):
the door is still hurt. You know, it's just what's
going to tell you that the way these things are going,
that tomorrow is going to be a good day for Michigan.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
Uh well, I have to say that because you know, Listen,
I live in a Michigan house. You know that, Pete, Right, No,
I do think it's going to be I had a bed. Look,
I knew what was going to happen. I told you
gonna happen to Michigan against Texas. I think it's gonna
be a blowout in Texas going to roll them. I
have a better I have a better feeling about them
for this game tomorrow, just because I did do the better.

(10:57):
You know, the change real that. Okay, expectations are kind
of out the window. Look, when you win last week
twenty eight eighteen, I think you're gonna get You're gonna
get the best Michigan game of the year.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
So far tomorrow and to your point and then night
Jude Kidd, because I love it. But I do think
when what happens when you have a quarterback change is
you instantly revert to Okay, defense and offensive line takeover
and for whatever reason, what did Michigan do better than
anybody in the country last year? Hold up on defense
and get amazing offensive line play and just pound pound pound.

(11:28):
Eventually the dam would break. So I think what you
do is now, even though it's not like you're replacing
Patrick Mahomes under center or anything like this Hereio, you
do change it up. So you're not asking Alex Orgy
to go out there and be arch manning and you know,
coming in to be this relief pitcher who's all that great.
You just say, okay, just go out there, play your game,
you know, just get to keep the change movement and
rely it more on the running game, landa defense, which

(11:51):
they should have been doing from jump this season against
Presno State, and maybe all of a sudden Michigan starts
to look to part again. But again this is part Michigan,
part I'm just not there yet in assuming this whole
USC thing.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Is that, for real, do you have any upset special
that you're monitoring you that you think there could be
some chaos or is this one of those weeks?

Speaker 5 (12:13):
All right? I hesitate to say this because I work
on the Nordame site on sports illustrated Miami University is
a better MAX team than Northern ILLINOI. It's not there.
They're not going to lose to Miami University. They're just
but if they for the same thing, if you forget
to run the ball. They only ran the boull twenty
four times against Northern Illinoi. They just kind of forgot

(12:36):
to run. If they do that again against because against
the RedHawks, they have a Gabbert. It's not a blame,
it's not a you know, they've got a Gabbard under center.
He's all right. And so this team, which went twelve
and two last year when the MAC Conference, they might
give Notre Dame a little bit of a push, but

(12:57):
tomorrow it's you know, there's some fun games out there.
I mean, we do get Oklahoma State in Utah. I
kind of like, you know, the Big twelve slid a
little bit. Tomorrow. I actually think Colorado is probably gonna
look pretty good against Baylor for being Colorado. So there
are we're starting to get in a conference places, We're
starting to get into some pretty good games coming up here.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
All right, now, we're three weeks in cam Ward. I mean,
we talked Tisman Trophy favorites. Cam Ward Is is clearly
the overwhelming favorite.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Is that like? Is it like I would say, is
he that big?

Speaker 1 (13:27):
Because you see that the wow plays he makes Miami,
you can tell is gonna probably run rough shot over
the acc and and that's always that's gonna help his
case all the way through.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
It's is he really that good or is he hey?
Eventually the bubble could burst on him.

Speaker 5 (13:42):
He's really that good and he's not winning the Heisman
because look at their schedule and tell me the game
that's gonna be on national TV. No one's gonna see him.
He's gonna be kind of like that guy who puts
up set. It's killing the row. I have said this
all off season that you've got now now Klin de
Bort's got a defense. You know he got Washington into

(14:02):
the National Championship last year with no d what's the
lever And now you've got the Kaling de Boar offense
with five star guys running yet the defense that has talent,
and you've got a guy and nol Rowe who is
very smart on his feet when it comes to just
keeping things moving and can bomb away. He's like the
perfect quarterback for this system. I think Jalen noil Roe

(14:23):
is to lose at this point. But you're right, Kim
Moore's really really good and he's think it's Florida though.
I mean the Gators just they're not very good. You know,
Miami hasn't had a great win, really great win yet.
And again the big problem is remember when it comes
to the Heisman. And this is why no joke. Arch
Manning is right in this thing, because everyone's gonna watch
him every week. It's a popularity contest, and so you

(14:47):
got to know who the guy is. And I don't
think anybody really They're gonna see the stats, but I
don't think anybody's actually gonna watch Miami football, not because
of any other reason.

Speaker 4 (14:55):
I was in.

Speaker 5 (14:56):
They don't play anybody all that great on this schedule.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
You just need to prop them up around the state
because that's all they got right now.

Speaker 5 (15:04):
Yep. Yeah, but watch out though, watch out for yourself.
Florida Bulls. That's a that you asked before about, you know,
those upset kind of things that dough Florida is they
can really run. They are dangerous the games in Tampa,
and that might end this whole thing, you know, right,
the whole cambored thing pretty quickly.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
Yeah, but Pete, Matt Growth, He's not walking through that door.
Come on, man, that's not.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Pete.

Speaker 5 (15:29):
Why am I on your show? I come on your show?
Why do you get me for Kerry the references? I
come to you for the show for a Matt growthy

but definitely join us. Listen Over Promised with Cavino and
Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you

Speaker 1 (18:44):
Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon live from the tire Rack dot Com studios.
And before we get to a breakdown of two NFL
teams that are going to have a rough go on
Sunday right now race for the wild card, the National
League Padres and the White Sox. The White Sox trying

(19:06):
to avoid lost number one twenty one. Padres are winning
two nothing. Ninth inning White Sox were down to their
last out two outs, nobody on after sheets walks Sosa
Homers to tie the game at two a piece, the
White Sox staying in it with the Podres. Padres do

(19:28):
have two on nobody out, but Mike Harmon your Chicago
White Sox doin the Bill.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
Pullman Independence Day. We will not go juel into that
good night.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
We're not just gonna lose one hundred and twenty one
games rolling over. We're gonna try as hard as we
can and then blow it in the bottom of the
ninth inning. But we'll hit a home run here in
the top of the night to tie it.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
If nothing else. Some anxious moments for the good folks
there in San Diego. Sure after the wildcard chase. This
is good for business. It's good for us on a
Friday night, late night. Unfortunately, I can't go and cheer
on the White SOI this weekend. Way too much stuff
going on, running kids around and kid events. But let
me tell you this is the best. And I really

(20:08):
want to text friendly right now just to dorm it.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Because you gotta text them now because they got you know,
they got two out.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
Okay, you gotta text them now right now.

Speaker 4 (20:19):
May not end good for you, buddy.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
It might not get it in right now.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
I'm hopeful, but it might not end good for you, buddy.

Speaker 7 (20:26):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
And look, this would be a huge win for the Diamondbacks.
Because this would for the Padres, rather because this would
then give them a two game lead in the lost
column over the Diamondbacks for the second wildcard match.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
The third wildcard, it's a five game lead for them
right now.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
Uh so the Padres can either come back to the
pack a little bit or basically clinch a wild card tonight.
They'd be five games ahead of the Atlanta Braves when
you're inside of ten games and it's pretty much just
a fade a complete at this point. But again, we
still have the rest of the ninth inning to go
for the White Sox exture any coming baby, let's go
all right, So more on this game coming up and

(21:04):
on second I'm sure Steve Steve Desagre will have the
latest on this. But couple of teams that it's gonna
be a long week for gonna be another long.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
Week for the Rams.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
I'd love to say something else because they were my
preseason Super Bowl pick. I said, it's a bucks in
the Rams in the NFC Championship, But I got to
get a due over on that. With all the injuries
in the first two games, I get a do over
on that pick, right, or I could just elevate Tampa. Right,
since I said Tampa in the NFC title game, I
can elevate Tampa and and just kind of the X

(21:35):
off the rams because these injuries are.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
Just killing kill. I mean you can you can abdicate
that that pick. I mean, you can throw it in
the wayside and just say, you know what, I was wrong.
I was in the football game killers man, But it's
part of the game. Like as you're trying to navigate. Look,
the last guy you thought would be the man standing
was it would be Matthew Stafford. Yet there he is.

Speaker 1 (21:59):
So it's everybody else's hurt, but Matthew Stafford is help.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
But look at it's been one by one by one.
To use that again, I mean you're talking about the
offensive line, defensive line, secondary, all the way through your
receiving corps. Your two big hitters both gone in Nikua
and Cup. And let's face it, you know they've been
reticent to put Cup on the the injured reserve. I

(22:23):
get that, but Niku is not walking back through that
door in one hundred percent even when he's cleared. I mean,
that's gonna take a ramp up. So I mean that's
that's a long, arduous journey and then Seattle's better than
I think most wanted to give him credit for. When
we talked about the coach letting him fight, maybe that
was the best thing of all. All right, but last
man standing room for aggressive expanse and he went full

(22:45):
Heath Heath Ledger joker. Let's see how they do. Let
it play out.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Let's see things will get better for the Rams. Right,
they're too talented a team. But it's good. It's not
gonna be this week. It's gonna be a little while.
They need their offensive weapons healthy. You're talking about DeMarcus
Robinson and Tyler Johnson being your top targets for Matthew
Stafford as well as he can sling it that it's
not enough. They just also has to be up. Yeah,
look they did. They just don't have the horses right now.

(23:13):
And you don't get well against a forty nine er
team that's coming in after a reality check against the
Minnesota Vikings, where hey, look at all the effort we
put into that opening game against the Jets, and we
signed all our guys and took care of all of
our business and and and we brought in Williams and
we signed Auk Okay, we're great, we're rolling, and then
Minnesota's defense just said, uhh, not here. It's a bit

(23:36):
of a reality check game for the forty nine ers,
and I always like the reality check games earlier in
the season rather than later. This is not a week
where the Rams, okay, we get we get our house together.
The forty nine ers are gonna come in and you're
gonna see a forty nine er team like you saw
against the Jets. They're gonna run the football a lot.
They're gonna make plays in the passing game like they
need to. I know that Kittle is is questionable and
he might not play and be out a couple of guys,

(23:57):
but they're gonna run the football a time.

Speaker 4 (23:59):
You have seen that. Whether it's McCaffrey or Jordan Mason,
it doesn't matter.

Speaker 1 (24:03):
The Niners are gonna come in defensively, this is gonna
be a dominant effort and they're gonna send the Rams
home with a loss. I'd love to say it, but
my Super Bowl pick and one of the most talented teams,
one of the best up and cut, they're gonna be
oh and three. And it's it's insane to think that,
but the Rams are gonna be oh and three in
a year that they could be a super Bowl team.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
Yeah, Aaron Donald's not walking through that door.

Speaker 1 (24:25):
No, No, he's sleeping. We saw Yeah, he's watching Rams
games and sleeping. His wife put that video up online.
He is not coming back. He is sleeping through Sundays.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
Uh. Sleeper pick is Juwan Jennings for your forty nine ers?
Are you still rounding himself into shape? No debo, Samuel,
But that means we have to dig a little deeper.
With all the injuries hitting San Francisco as well.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
Uh, the other team, it's gonna be a long day
for And it's really tough for me to say. And again, boy,
but I said good things about Michigan before. It's gonna
be a long day for the Lions. Because I'll tell
you what of the surprise team so far in the
NF fell the ones I'm the one I'm believing in
the most right now the first couple weeks are the Cardinals,
because boy can they score a lot of points, and

(25:08):
boy they can do it quick like this is this
offense all of a sudden has picked up and it's
been exactly what they've needed.

Speaker 4 (25:14):
Right.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
Oh, Marvin Harrison Junior. What a horrible debut. Yeah, we
fixed that really quick, didn't we. That was a really
quick fighting. They're not getting along. It's all going to hell.
Maybe maybe Marvin Harrison Junior is gonna be okay. I
think this is how Arizona has always envisioned their offense
with Kyler Murray, and they can scroll. Look, I mean,
would they put up thirty When you put up you

(25:36):
nearly win a game and nearly score thirty five against
the Bills Week one? Oh, maybe the Bills aren't great,
but then you see what they did second week in
the season, It's okay. This offense is legit.

Speaker 4 (25:45):
Man.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
They're gonna score a ton of points. And look, Jonathan
Gannon get a lot of credit because he's taken a
team where it was are we starting over?

Speaker 4 (25:52):
Do we keep Kyler Murray? What do we do?

Speaker 1 (25:54):
And now suddenly they look focused defensively, yes, still some issues, absolutely,
but you look where they're coming from.

Speaker 4 (26:00):
On offense.

Speaker 1 (26:01):
They scare so many teams and Jared Goff not that
he's suddenly regressing, but Jared Goff is getting figured out
a little bit, right. I mean, he's got the great
weapons on offense. He's got an unbelievable a set of
skill position players to throw to and hand the ball to.

Speaker 4 (26:18):
But Goff is getting figured out a little bit.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
Look, there's a reason why Sean McVay said, listen, I'll
take Matthew Stafford again.

Speaker 4 (26:23):
Give you a couple of first round draft picks for him.

Speaker 1 (26:26):
He's not gonna come all the way back to where
he was, but he's getting figured out a little bit.
Arizona is confident they're gonna surprise Detroit early. They're gonna
get out to a lead. Detroit won't be able to
eat into it enough. Arizona buy a touchdown and give
me the over in this one. I know it's a
lot of points, but Arizona's gonna shock a lot of people,
and Detroit's gonna go wow. We really have to get

(26:47):
back to some kind of center before we move on,
because we're struggling now against the Cardinals on the road.

Speaker 4 (26:54):
The Cardinals are legit, and it's not that the Lions aren't.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
It's just that it's tough when you're from the NFC
championship game and you're trying to navigate a season where
there's a lot of expectations and your team looked like
they were better than you expected. After Week one. Everything
was great for the Lions. Now here they are against
a team that's red hot offensively, that does a lot
of things that there's not enough tape on yet to
see everything they like to do. Yeah, give me Arizona

(27:18):
to continue their big start.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
Arizona, we're playing with good balance right now, still waiting
for some more complimentary receivers to come back. Between suspensions
and injuries, Laporte has been a non factor thus far,
and that's got to be concerning not only for fantasy fans,
but obviously for the Lions and how that offense has
been able to flow just six sketches fifty eight yards
thus far, hasn't found the end zone, so he's been

(27:42):
a non factor. Three point favorites on the road here,
Smith minus three for Detroit, fifty one and a half
your total. That is a in stark contrast to pretty
much everything else on the board this week. As we
talked about earlier, with all those low forties games, Uh,
the only game to rival at is Philadelphia New Orleans.

(28:04):
But with Arizona. It's funny. We always used to compare
Murray's speed to video games. And now that's like, you know,
making the dog jokes for the two year moratorium we
had with Michael Vick. Right, it can't be a dogfight
like I was with Kyler Murray. It's like, we can't
joke how he looks like he's playing a video game
as he runs around. It's what he's always been, but

(28:27):
now it's a pejeoritative now and it's still the reality
of watching this guy work when he's healthy, uh, and
the throwing lanes that he's able to create with his
keeping plays alive. Mcbride'll had bigger days. I know he's
not been the uh, the breakthrough guy people expected with
drafting him as early as they did Fantasy wise, but

(28:49):
the balance with James Connor has been fantastic defensively, just
enough plays uh to create some chaos. Yeah. I like Arizona.
I like what this team is as long as you
can keep Murray upright and right now they're doing a
good job of moving the pocket and he's getting getting.

Speaker 4 (29:06):
Rid of the wall.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
Well whenever, whenever is the switch flipping there in Arizona.
They've now convinced him, Hey, you know what, you can
live to see another down don't take the hit. Look, Arizona,
their identity.

Speaker 1 (29:21):
It's it's really tough because like every NFL team has
an identity that that's like, Okay, we're gonna do there before.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
We're gonna figure him out though. Yeah, but they don't
know when neither do we.

Speaker 1 (29:31):
Like the Steelers, Look, the Steelers always have done well
and achieved the most when their defense has been great.

Speaker 4 (29:37):
Right.

Speaker 1 (29:37):
You know, yes, they have years where Roethlisberger threw the
football well, but that was tough. Whenever they they you know,
they play great defense, that's when they do well.

Speaker 4 (29:44):
Right.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
The Chargers, whenever they can air it out and their
quarterbacks have big years certain teams that way, and they
always succeed more because that's their identity. The Cardinals always
succeed more when their identity is we put as many
points on the board as we can and we just
let the rest happen, right, Like, let's we let the rent.
We're gonna be an electric offense, and that's what we're
gonna focus all our attention on. And I know it's

(30:07):
only two games, but this might be the best Cardinals
team we've I mean going back to the Super to
their Super Bowl, Like this made.

Speaker 4 (30:13):
This offense may be that loaded.

Speaker 1 (30:14):
And they still haven't gotten anything from from Trey Benson yet, right,
Like he's the guy they drafted either to push James
Connor out the door. He's gonna be thirty years old.
They haven't gotten anything from him yet. I mean that
this offense is really loaded. And all of a sudden,
one week, Marvin Harrison Junior goes from ay, I don't
know if the guy. Oh no, no, he's the overwhelming
favorite for Rookie of the Year. Like he went from
there for problems and I don't know, I don't like

(30:35):
this debut. And after the first five minutes of the
game last week, it was, oh, yeah, no, he's he's
absolutely fine. He's gonna be really really good. I mean,
this is this is gonna be the best version of
the Cardinals, and it's exciting. And we haven't talked enough
about them this week, but I'm telling you, man, there's
something there about them this year. And even though it's
only two games, I really like where they're going so far.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
Well, I think the another team where you might have
a little bit of sky has fallen. And we've talked
about him a bunch. Trevor Lawrence and those Jaguars I
know Ed Oliver described it as weird, Yeah fifteen or
sixteen times yeah, split the difference fifteen and a half
times five point favorites are the Bills? Is one of
the two Monday night games that we have. You got

(31:18):
Washington Cincinnati as well. Cincinnati is interesting. If they didn't
have the rookie quarterback on the other side, I'd say
look out the usual. Hey, they suck for two weeks
and then figure it out, would change. But I think
Almaruno are I keep getting his last name wrong, and
Aurumo and Oromo and Oromo that he's able to torment

(31:41):
Jade and Daniels. You want to give the guy the
proper respect and then I always invert those syllabi. But
you know so so Cincinnati might have a get right situation.
But for Jacksonville, if they get run out of the building, boy,
I'll tell you what. For Doug Peterson and for Trevor Lawrence,
is gonna be a long ass week.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
Could be a long week for those teams. One guy,
it's never a long week. Four because he take the syllabus.
He would get it first day at class and throw
it out and still get an a. It's Steve Desager
with what's trending in the wide world of sport?

Speaker 8 (32:12):
Well, what I have to write jokes in in the margins?
Of course, I thought the syllabus.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
Of course.

Speaker 8 (32:16):
By the way, the Padres lined into a double play
to end the ninth inning, they went to the tenth
and San Diego has just won it three to two.
Oh sucks Fernando tatist Junior a leadoff RBI double ends it.
Figure that one out, Yes he did. But the White
Sox record now thirty six and one eighteen on the season,

(32:38):
and the Major League regular season ends a week from Sunday.
White Sox had hit the tying two run homer top
of the ninth ruining a great start from Joe Musgrove,
who threw six scoreless innings nine strikeouts. Gets no decision,
but a win for San Diego, which means there's still
four games back in the first place Dodgers in the
NL West. Dodgers in a series next week against the Padres.

(32:59):
That'll be the fun a week of the season. Remember
Dodgers one tonight at home beating Colorado sixty four. LA's
record ninety two and sixty two. Sho hey Otani with
his fifty second home run and his fifty second stolen base.
So Otani at the plate in his last ten at
bats is nine for ten with twelve RBIs. The Yankees
won in ten innings at Oakland for to two, the

(33:20):
win to Garrett Cole. He threw nine innings with a
run in two hits, allowed ninety nine pitches. Yankee outfielder
Juan Soto did not start due to a sore leg,
but had an RBI double as a pinch hitter in
the tenth. The A's offense went three for thirty two.
By the way, attendance was twenty three thousand, putting the
A season average over ten thousand this year. This starts

(33:42):
the final homestand for the franchise in Oakland. Yankees still
lead Baltimore in the AL East by four games. The
Orioles hit five homers in the first six innings Tonight
beat Detroit seven to one. Anthony Santander with his forty
third home run and the wind to Corbin Burns, who's
now fifteen to eight. Minnesota in twelve won at Boston
forty two, so the Twins one game over Detroit. Now

(34:04):
for the final Al playoff spot. Mariner's still two games
behind Minnesota, Mets and Braves each loss. Philadelphia beat the
Mets in New York twelve to two. Alec Baum four hits,
Philly's clinch a playoff berth and short stuff for the Mets.
Francisco Lindors still out with the sore back Mets offense
after the first two batters of the game. Tonight went

(34:24):
two for twenty eight with twelve strikeouts, but the Braves
lost four to three at Miami. The lost to Charlie Morton,
who allowed three runs in the first. Brave still two
games out of the last NL wildcard spot behind the Mets.
Houston and Seattle each one San Francisco and Arizona with wins.
Cleveland won at Saint Louis five to one. Jose Ramirez
his thirty sixth homer and his fortieth stolen base victories

(34:48):
for Tampa Bay, the Cubs and Cincinnati Ada on Elie
de la Cruz as the Reds won eight three over Pittsburgh.
Dela Cruz over his first two seasons of his major
league career, now just the third play to get to
one hundred stolen bases already. The other two Vince Coleman
and Ricky Henderson and De la Cruz, the only one
in his first two seasons to have one hundred steals

(35:09):
and thirty homers. He's also the fastest in Big league
history for one hundred steals and one hundred extra base hits.
What a college football game.

Speaker 4 (35:18):
Here's the thing you told me? Hey, Jose Ramirez, Hey,
thirty six forty.

Speaker 1 (35:23):
Look at the stolen base, Shoe Hayotani has made both
of those guys irrelevant.

Speaker 4 (35:27):
All right, nobody cares. I Vermir's got forty forty.

Speaker 8 (35:30):
Yeah, forty forty.

Speaker 4 (35:31):
That doesn't matter. Look at the stolen base yet doesn't matter.
It doesn't matter.

Speaker 8 (35:34):
For Joeyotani is number two of the majors and steals
behind Ellie De la Cruz in big league history. For
a fifty homer season. Nobody had even had twenty five
steals to go with fifty overs. He has over fifty
of each.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
It's so now he's catching Judge.

Speaker 8 (35:52):
Yes, he's one homer behind Judge, who's only got a
couple of long Bowls so far. In the month of September,
college football on Fox TV Tonight had Illinois win in
overtime at Nebraska thirty one, twenty four. Stanford won on
a field goal final play in their ACC opener at
Syracuse twenty six, twenty four, and the late game early
third quarter as Washington State tied with San Jose State

(36:13):
twenty four to twenty four.

Speaker 4 (36:14):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve.

Speaker 1 (36:16):
Though The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike
Harmon live from the Tirack dot Com studios. Coming up next,
we have the first start coming for someone in college
football tomorrow that has everybody's eyes on them.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
How's it gonna go? We'll tell you that's next right here,
Jason and.

Speaker 1 (36:33):
Mike Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith
Show is my best friend Mike Harmon, and as we
get set.

Speaker 4 (36:44):
The starting debut tomorrow for arch Manning at Texas.

Speaker 1 (36:49):
Look, let's let's let's get this out of the way
early to big test.

Speaker 3 (36:54):
He will be huge test of his aptitude.

Speaker 1 (36:58):
He will be great at Texas. Will thump Louisianam and Rowe. Okay,
it's going to happen, all right. Arch Manning jumps on
the scene last week, you know, in for the injured
quinn Ewers. He looks amazing. He's faster than Tyreek Hill,
all of the accolades. Look, He've been waiting to see
Arch Manning for quite a while, and I'm sure he's
gonna look great tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (37:17):
And there's gonna be the big question of oh, what's
gonna happen here and there? But let me just tell
you this.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
Okay, here, here's the big takeaway something to know about
college football right now. It's great that we have the
twelve team playoff because you never know. Anything can happen.
But right now, if Texas doesn't win the national championship,
I will be extremely surprised. They are head and shoulders
better than everybody right now.

Speaker 4 (37:41):
This is the most loaded.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
Texas team since the Vince Young running all over USC
at the Rose Bowl era.

Speaker 4 (37:47):
This is how good this team is.

Speaker 1 (37:49):
And it doesn't matter if Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning
is playing quarterback. They're loaded. Oh but can you navigate this?
If Manning plays well.

Speaker 4 (37:57):
It does.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
This is Manning's first year. The team is winning, undefeated.
It's gonna be a magic carpet ride. Manning knows I'm
taking over next year when Youwers is going to the NFL.
They will manage this fine. We've seen it before. This
is not gonna be a problem. Arch Manning is not
gonna say you play me to the guy knew I'm
going to Texas, even though quinn Ewers is there and
I know he's gonna play, and he made a million

(38:19):
dollars in nil money without taking a snap at a watch.

Speaker 3 (38:21):
Chris sick major apple White all over again.

Speaker 1 (38:25):
He knows he's gonna play, he knows he's gonna play
next season. Well, that was even a worse scasion because
apple White was only a freshman and I want to go.

Speaker 3 (38:33):
They were a nice conversation after a game at Stanford.

Speaker 4 (38:36):
Yeah, that's great. No, that was just stupid by Chris Sims.
It was just dumb.

Speaker 1 (38:39):
I'm gonna stay there and sit for three years and
then play one year. But this team is absolutely loaded
and they're gonna beat everybody, and they have big games
coming up, but they both play them at home. They're
gonna have Georgia. They're gonna win that game. They're better
than Georgia right now. We saw Georgia have all kinds
of problems with Kentucky last week. They're gonna beat Oklahoma
and it's gonna be whoa Texas really is significantly better

(39:03):
than everybody else.

Speaker 4 (39:05):
That's how good they are.

Speaker 1 (39:06):
Everybody else, all the top teams right now, they all
have problems, right They're not as dynamic as Texas is.

Speaker 4 (39:11):
Georgia clearly is not, and Ohio State is not. These
are all the big time.

Speaker 1 (39:16):
Hey, we expect them to be in the College Football
Playoff and win their conferences. Texas is just that much
better than everybody else right now.

Speaker 3 (39:23):
Well right now, sure, But that's the thing. It's a
long season. Bye weeks, injuries, elevations, demotions, coaching blunders, officiating errors,
you name it. We've seen it all. We watch some
of it tonight and enumerated them. I've got like four
pages of notes from the two games that we watched,
part of it because I wanted to live and die

(39:45):
a little bit with each play of that Stanford Syracuse game.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
Throw those notes away or burn them. We will never
speak of that game again. Throw it away.

Speaker 4 (39:53):
No, that's it.

Speaker 3 (39:54):
I mean Jason cole. I debated having him call in,
but decided that would just be you know, No, he
texted me that.

Speaker 4 (40:00):
No, he texted me. He texted me says, hey, that
was a very good win. Hey, thanks Jason call thank you.

Speaker 3 (40:05):
Oh he did dial up the very good though, so
good on him. But for Ohio State, for Georgia, for Alabama,
plenty of tests, some head to head battles that will
decide some things, and we'll sluff some stuff off. But
I mean we're not even We're at mid September. Man,
I like it. You know, the show is today. You've
got to make big, bold predictions, no question about it.

(40:28):
But I think they'll come back to the pack a bit.
You know, the attrition will happen. But it's exciting to
have Texas in that conversation, right because usually it's Georgia, Alabama,
Michigan these last couple of years, and Ohio State. So
it's good to have someone else crash the party. There's
no other way about that.

Speaker 1 (40:47):
Look, look, things could change, and look, as you say,
there's always different things that happened.

Speaker 4 (40:52):
But I'd be really I'd be really surprised.

Speaker 1 (40:55):
If it didn't we if we didn't go into the
playoff with Texas being the number one overall seed. I
agree there, and they're in the National Championship game and
it's you know, and look that's the best thing. Hey,
your quarterback's hurt. You have two quarterbacks. They can navigate
these problems. This is not going to be an issue
like that. That's the biggest thing that I've seen this
last week is all what if you Weers is ready
and arch Manning is good, They're going back to Quinn yours.

Speaker 4 (41:17):
I mean, it's it's that simple.

Speaker 1 (41:18):
Arch Manning is not taking this job away from Quinn
Yours by beating Louisiana Monroe. Okay, he's not taking that job.
Now they played Georgia and he throws for five touchdowns. Suddenly,
then we have a conversation, but are they right against
louis Louisiana Monroe. I think that's the seven and a half.
Oh easy, they'll cover that. I'll cover that in the
first half.

Speaker 4 (41:38):
Are you kidding?

Speaker 3 (41:38):
Well, that's the first half line.

Speaker 1 (41:40):
I mean, I'm sorry, I was gonna say they'll cover
that in the first quarter.

Speaker 4 (41:43):
They'll cover that first quarter.

Speaker 3 (41:44):
Yeah, yeah, forty five total for the game.

Speaker 4 (41:47):
Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen dome.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
Coming up next, our Big Football Friday continues where one
suit new star quarterback. You gotta relax on five if
you Aaron Rodgers
