Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello and welcome inside final hour tonight The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. I should I
should have had a good David Caruz a one liner radio.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Let's go hit it again?
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Ah, okay, wait wait, hang on, hang on, okay, hang on.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend, Mike Harmon.
He may not be at JAG, he may not be
on NCIS, but he is my Mike Harmon, Erica, Eric,
let's go all right. I even took the sunglasses off
before I said it. Oh, I appreciate that pretty well. No,
it's good and we still have late night football we do.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Come on?
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Okay, good, good, because I want to ask this befo.
We're gonna get to the NFL quarterback. Everybody needs to
relax on in a second, but right now, last game
going on San Jose State and Washington State. Suddenly, hey,
the Apple Cup might be an Apple Cup hangover. Washington
State is losing the San Jose State late in the
third quarter. Thirty one twenty four. Weird game. San Jose
(01:39):
State seems to be doing whatever they want to offensively
against Washington State. It's kind of a head scratcher. Emmitt
Brown is thrown for a couple of touchdowns. It's been
a it's been a big night for them. Is this
still technically Packed twelve after dark?
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I know the logo is on the field, but it
really like, is this it's still packed twelve after dark? Yeah,
it's not like PAC twelve too late, too furious, like
we could still do after dark.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
No, this is it's still Pack twelve. It's the logos
still on the field. It is a Friday. It is
dark everywhere. I don't unless you have you know, northern
lights or something or something freaky happening and you're part
of the world. But no, I mean, look, it's everything
we have come to expect because there's chaos on a
(02:25):
football field. Even if we've now traversed to the CW
defined it. Yeah, I mean, I mean, I mean that
was the one thing I was surprised about. You know,
we talked with like True TV and programming and everything
through the years. Now we're on the CW let's go.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
No, look, I'm happy for that. I am absolutely happy
for that. But I feel like, is this really a
PAC twelve game or is this like days of future
past PAC twelve, Like, Hey, this could be a PAC
twelve game in the future if we get the conference. Really,
I don't know, man, If it's weird, I feel like, yeah,
PAC twelve after Ark was really what it was known for,
(03:01):
these crazy ass games on a Friday night.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
But I don't know.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
I don't know, man, it's I like the craziness. It
just doesn't have the same feel. Yeah, it's it's it's weird.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
I don't know what to I mean, tell me you
didn't get excited at the next round of additions to
the new and improved and reconstituted PAC twelve rising from
the ashes.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Yeah, here's a thing I need, I need, I need uh,
I need I need better, I need better schools. If
we're gonna say that's the PAC twelve, come on, man, you.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Can't just take some crazy teams from the Mountain West
and say hey, Pack twelve again. Slat school. That is
one of my favorite words. But I'm not gonna say no.
I mean, you can't just take anybody from the Mountain
West and say hey, it's a brand new Pac twelve.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
No it's not.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
You know, you know, you can't take the car parts
out of a Cadillac and put it in a Volkswagen
Beetle and say, oh, it's okay.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
No it's not.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
It's not the same thing.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Just because the Pac twelve had one really good send
off year which was really competitive from top to bottom
and a lot of excitement and lamontion of like.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Why does it have to go away?
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Remember it sucked for years where there was a divide
between three or four teams and everybody else.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Yeah, I'm with you, but that was the old pack
to the packed man.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
But it's going on the comeback trail.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
But it's not really.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
It's like when they tried to get rid of Coke's
and it.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Is a new Coke and then they said down with
this and Coke came back.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
This is like when when when Axel Rose said no,
it's still guns and Roses but none of the other.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Guys are in.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Yeah, but I really was, though, except instead of Axl
Rose being in, it's like Dizzy Read is the only
guide because it's it's Washington State and Orient State.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
Now.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
To be honest, if Chinese Democracy was just an Axl
Rose solo solo album, it really would have gotten received
a lot differently, wouldn't Yes.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Exactly, People would have still bought an Axel solo album.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
All Right, it's there.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
It's a pretty good album, but it was I'm not
gonna keep but but I mean the Packed twelve, I mean,
was a weird conference towards the end, and we made
fun of its leadership. At least the people in charge
now seem motivated to get it back to twelve teams,
so I give them credit.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
They made some business decisions called the Pac twelve.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
You think they gotta get to twelve at some point?
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Hey, hey, hey, hey, the Big ten is still the
Big ten?
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Yeah? How many? Right now?
Speaker 1 (05:23):
I'm telling you, man, I'm telling you, I'll bright this.
That's my best ball prediction ever. When they get to
twenty teams, they're gonna rebrand as the Big twenty guarantee Guarantee.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
We already have the website, so let's go.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Gonna be big twenty. We're gonna make a lot of
money off of that big twenty. You want that come
to us the website, very good.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Keep squatting on that, buddy, We're gonna be millionaires. Just
keep squatting on that.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
In the interim, it's a slow bleed of the registration
and domain and all.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
I wonder if there's people that keep checking every day.
I keep out that guy still has it. No man, nope,
that guy still has it.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
Still as it. Oh, he's on the radio at that
Yahoo Jason Smith. I'll forget. He's gonna keep that thing forever.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Me Yahoo in and of myself, you know.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
So big Power Hour of Football to preview coming up.
We have our big Upset specials of the week in
college football in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
But let me just say this because this.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Is a topic that that was really hot all week long,
and we haven't spent as much time on it because well,
other things have happened. But you know, I get called
out for this in social media and all these different things.
So let me just say this. Sam Donald has played well. Okay,
he has played well. I'm not saying he's not. I'm
(06:39):
not saying it's one pass against the forty nine ers. No,
he's played well, I'm not saying he hasn't. But let's
tap the brakes on Sam Donald being great suddenly and oh,
get him away from the Jets. First of all, that's
a false narrative because all of these guys who have
left the Jets have gone guess they do have the
(07:01):
Jets in common early in their career.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
Yeah, but they've all been to four, five or six.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Well, but it's a cleansing pronos. You can't scrub it
all off in one one washing. This is like, you know,
you got a carpet with years of being soiled and
trampled on with the dog.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
Like me trying to clean a ketchup stain off my shirt.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
This has to go through the laundry like five or
six times that he's like five or six ways to go.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Yeah, I gotta do it.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
It's a slow erosion of that. Likewise, washing off the Jets.
I mean, that's deep rooted stuff that you need a
lot of time and football therapy to get through.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
And I want to say this, the Jets never had
Baker Mayfield at any point. Okay, so don't throw them
in with Gino and said, no, the Jets never had
Baker Mayfield, right, so don't throw that in there.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
Don't try to tag me with that. But look, I've.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Seen this from Sam Darnald before, right, because I remember
when he went to Carolina after the Jets and it
was all, look, Sam Donald's three and oh oh, he's
finally with a team that knows what they need to
do to take advantage of Sam Donald's talent.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
And Sam Donald is so good.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Yeah, okay, Sam Donald played Okay those first few weeks
with Carolina. Still saw miss a lot of passes, but okay,
they won. They were three and zero, and everybody was
all over Sam Donald and the Jets are terrible and
they can't evaluate quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
I mean they can't, but not for this part of
the conversation.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
And I knew, I said, okay, and I'll say the
same thing now that I said.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Then let's see.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
If Sam Donald is still doing this week eightish, okay,
because once you get about four weeks in and there's
tape on you and team see what you like to
do in your offense, everything changes. So, yeah, the Vikings
are there in the fast lane, right, now right to
put a great, big hurting on the forty nine ers.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Last week.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Defensively, they were terrific and Sam Donald played really well. Right,
The ninety seven yard dutchdown pass justin Jefferson was great.
He's got better talent offensively than he's had at any
of his stops. So far, he has played well. But again,
I'm gonna say, if he's still doing this in week eight,
I'll be the first guy to say, you know what
I was wrong. Look at Darnald. It just took him
(09:02):
forever to find the right fitting, and it took him
forever to be able to see what he sees downfield
and not misopen receivers. This is what this is what
he did. I'll be the first guy to say that.
But I don't see it happening right. A couple more
weeks he may play really well. Then suddenly you'll see
it a road away. Because at three and zero for
the Panthers, it was unbelievable for him. He was so good,
(09:23):
and then what happened middle of the season. He lost
his job and Baker Mayfield tried to come in and play,
and then Sam Donald had to leave and go play
someplace else. Right, So that's what happened to Sam Donald,
and the same kind of thing will happen again. Maybe
he doesn't fall off the cliff because he does have
a lot of talent at the skill positions out wide.
But he's gonna come back to earth. Remember he's not
a guy that came in where the Vikings said, oh,
(09:46):
this is our guy in free agency and here's a
big contract.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
It was hey, Sam, come in.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Maybe you'll start until our preferred quarterback of the future
is ready.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Maybe you won't.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
And when JJ McCarthy got drafted, you knew how long
is Sam Donald go to play? Three four weeks till
McCarthy is ready, probably that, But then McCarthy gets hurt
and Sam Donald has no choice but to start. So
this is not the Vikings went out into all we're
getting our diamond in the rough.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
We know what to do with him. After six years
in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Now they've been lucky so far that he's played well,
and he has played again. I'm not there's no butts
to that he has played well. But see me in
week eight if he's still doing this, I'll be the
I'll raise my hand, I will say I was wrong,
and Sam Donald is really I'll be the first guy
to say that, but come see me in week eight
about that.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
I just dig that. There are no butts, but.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
There's no bunch about what he's done so far. There's
no butts about what he's done, not not at all.
I'm not gonna say, well, this play was this, and
this play was this.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Non play.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
He's played well so far. I've watched him play. He's
look good.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
He's looked confident throwing the football, and I would be
confident throwing the ball to Justin.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Jefferson too was out there.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
You got Addison and eventually TJ. Hockinson comes back so
we can start running TJ lines again. You got Aaron
Jones in the backfield, good two way running back, and
then you've got a defense led by Brian Flores that'll
get after it, right. I mean, even Brock Purdy and
everybody from the forty nine ers had to be like, wow, okay,
(11:11):
that was something. And against Houston, should be able to
go and torment CJ Strout a little bit, right, Nico
Collins banged up, Joe Mixon probably not gonna go go
on down the line. Then you got a game at
Green Bay still trying to figure out Jordan Love is here,
isn't he? It doesn't matter this week perhaps, as we'll
talk about, but Vikings present a different set of challenges.
(11:33):
That game is on the road, of course, and then
they're in London against your Jats before a bye week
and then the Lions whatever's left of the Rams at
that point. We go from there and that'll be on
a short week. But for Sam Darnold, he's only twenty
seven years old. That's the crazy thing about his NFL
odyssey that he's what about two and a half years
(11:53):
older than guys that are just starting in the league
right now. That is a really scary proposition. Maybe Kevin
O'Connell and company have been able to tap in, right.
He did have a stop over in San Francisco that
it took stops and they had an incumbent that they
were paying nothing, so it was time to say okay,
moving on. And now he's in Minnesota getting a chance
(12:14):
to thrive with McCarthy there. And maybe he was a
reclamation project, right he was a flip this house HGTV
kind of scenario, or a trading card had bought it
and this guy went out and hit three home runs,
let's go, you know that kind of thing. So for
Sam Darnold, he's in a great chance to resurrect his career,
(12:36):
spin it off, even if it's not in Minnesota, to
go somewhere else after the year. But that doesn't negate
what he's doing now. Good balance, good defense, good opportunity,
and I'm not going to downplay it. Could could he
turn into a pumpkin tomorrow. Sure, but past performance is
not off and not always indicative of future success and returns.
(12:57):
They tell you that every time you go to invest
in a stock thing or you know, buy gold, all
those things things change.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Go to overstock dot com and check out these new
gold necklaces that we have for you right now, right,
I mean, you know, were you thinking more of the
late night messages where hey, no one knows what's coming
in this earth?
Speaker 3 (13:17):
No, that's right, Transfer all your money to gold.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
Gold is always gonna be worth selling.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Or yes, for thousands of years people have relied on
gold as part of their portfolio. Oh, there's plenty of
plenty of guys that have dived on.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
No, but there is somebody big, some big old television
star that's doing that now. And I can't think of
who it is like I saw them like maybe last
week in one of those commercials. Hey, you know, gold
is always gonna be is always gonna be the standard
that money should be used for.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
I forget who that is.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Yeah, now you're you're one hundred percent right. Well we'll
figure it out. But okay, you know, diversification and again,
past perform RAN's not indicative of future returns. Stock market,
anything else you're buying, you know, etc. Commodities. Markets are
volatile by nature. Likewise sports are as well. Right just
(14:12):
because your team's rolling pretty well. We talked about it
with college football in the early returns from some of
the heavyweight teams. One or two injuries, a bad balance,
and suddenly your season can go sideways. Guy gets in
trouble off the field. We don't ask for that, but
we know that it can happen, both at the collegiate
and professional levels. So we take it what it is.
(14:32):
Right now, Sam Darnold's in a great position, and I
know it vexes you, but there he is.
Speaker 1 (14:38):

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon live from the Tierak dot Com Studios.
PAC twelve after Dark early in the fourth quarter. San
Jose State leads Washington State thirty eight thirty one.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
I mean, pretend PAC twelve after dark.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Pretend, Hey, Hey, hey, fau faux PAC twelve after show
us tonight.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
It's Pack twelve. There's a logo on the field, there's
football laid on a Friday night. I mean, hell, it's
already gonna be one thirty in the morning, East Coast, OK.
And then and based on like just me saying the
time of day, makes it pack twelve after dark because
this is insanity. Kid's gonna end at like two thirty
(18:03):
in the morning. Yeah, you're gonna go, You're gonna take
a forty five minute nap, and you're gonna get up,
and it's gonna be the college football pregame. It's gonna
be you know, the big nude kickoff.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
See.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
You know That's the thing is that I remember after
living on the West Coast as long as I had that,
I really liked waking up at Saturday and Sundays and
having football being right away right like I love that,
like I can't. I remember going back once after we
lived out here for a long time, going back East
for a weekend, uh or or for for a vacation.
(18:37):
And it was during football's near the end of the year,
and the Jets were playing the Patriots in the Big Game,
and it was at four it was a four o'clock game,
and I'm saying, we wake we get up at like
nine o'clock in the morning, and I go, I'm ready
for the game. What do you mean I gona we
gotta wait till four o'clock? Like I did this my
whole life. I'm like, I can't wait till four o'clock.
What the hell are we gonna do for the next round?
Speaker 2 (18:56):
We're gonna what?
Speaker 1 (18:57):
I can't even watch football until one o'clock. It's nine
to thirty in the morning. What the hell, man, I
can't do this. I kind of get back to LA
so I could wake up and watch football. So that's
a big part. I love that trade off. But the
other part is I missed about the East Coast. I
missed the ten thirty football and basketball and hockey games
(19:17):
where I'm like, hey, it's one thirty in the morning.
Some crazy ass stuff is going on now. I miss
those games. Maybe because I'm still a night at you
and I are still working late at night and and
we're up late.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
But I kind of miss that. I kind of kind
of missed being on the East Coast.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Going oh, yeah, it's really cold out, you know, and
it's in December, but I'm watching this great game that
started at tenth third. I mean, I like that. I
missed that part of it. But the trade off for football, yeah,
I'll take that because I can't. I can't anymore. Just
wait till one or four o'clock for a game anymore.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
Forget it.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
Oh, you're halfway through a day, right, I mean break
it up right in the middle here. It's the difficulty
of all, right, you got kids events that you're running
around to when they're younger, a lot of those weekend
birthday parties. Raise your head. If you've been to a
bounce house in the last three weeks, all of you
listening West coast, well, I mean a nationwide but to
(20:08):
where it interrupted your football viewing. Wait, I gotta beware.
Nah No, And then you see all the men and
women that care about football huddled in a corner. It's
like you're not part of the party. I'm like, you
made a choice. It's like a fall wedding thing. Right,
You're at a reception. Why is nobody dancing? Because it's
fourth and three in this game in the final minutes.
(20:32):
That's why on a Saturday or Sunday, so you got
that chaos. But yeah, it's it's that that definitely took
some getting used to. Right, normally the middle of the
afternoon when your team played, or noon in Chicago, because
we had a lot of noon kickoffs because who weren't
very good?
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Yeah yeah, Hey, the earlier you play, the wors your
team is.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
I mean, Northwestern was a nine am Pacific kickoff all
the time. On Big ten Network or on FS one Northwest,
you're gonna play at four in the morning. Okay, but
you're on National TV. You're playing at four am. But
I mean you see what we have now, right Fox
on Friday nights because you know, the WWE has moved on,
(21:15):
so Friday Nights SmackDown is elsewhere. So what are your
place with Big ten football?
Speaker 4 (21:20):
Let's go So, speaking.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
Of Big ten football, yeah, this gets us to the
game of the week in college football, Michigan and USC.
We're gonna get to our upset special picks in the
NFL coming up in a couple of minutes. But look,
this is the big game of the day, right. USC
is two and oh And anytime USC starts out good,
every you get fans just start going, oh, this could
be great. This could be USC again, This could be
(21:45):
the old Pete Carroll dynasty all over because they're two
and oh, and then they wind up losing a couple
of games they have no business losing and it's oh yeah,
maybe next year. Right, that's where people are right now
with USC at two and oh but they have turned
the page successfully from the Caleb Williams era into the
Miller Moss era, and it looks pretty good. Defensively, they
look a little bit better. Offensively, they still look like
(22:07):
they're really dominant, and they got out to a big start. Look,
Lincoln Riley knows the honeymoon is over at USC and
they should have right now. Fans are saying we should
have been in the playoff at least once with Caleb
Williams and we weren't. So he knows the shine is
often needs to come up big, and they have played well.
But just like I told you, Michigan had no shot
to stay with Texas a couple weeks ago. Wait what, Jason,
(22:28):
You're in Michigan had Michigan had no shot to stay
with Texas. The opposite is going to be true tomorrow.
And I love Michigan getting five point five ish points.
It was six earlier in the week, but now the
lines come down to about five ish. But Michigan's at home.
They have the quarterback change to Orgy and he's not great.
(22:49):
But any time you change quarterbacks and brings a bit
of a juice to the team. And it's not like
they were doing anything with Davis Warreney through too many
interceptions and that killed a lot of drives and Michigan
is not talent enough to overcome that and still look
really good. Michigan has looked kind of mess so far
the first three weeks, but the change to him playing
at home, USC coming in their first game at Michigan,
(23:12):
I fully expect Michigan to get out to a big start. Defensively,
they can hold USC back for a while. It's going
to take USC a little bit of time to get
their footing as long as Moss doesn't turn it.
Speaker 4 (23:22):
Over a bunch and makes some bad decisions.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Eventually USC will get to playing really well and they
will start to import their will on the game. But
this is like a field goal game for me, and
I see this being really close late, and maybe it's
USC with a final drive to win it by a
field goal, or USC's defense stopping Michigan who simply can't
go seventy five yards because their quarterback isn't that kind
(23:45):
of guy. But I see a bigger day for Michigan tomorrow.
Than I did against Texas. Might still be a loss,
but it's going to be a game whereas Texas just
blew him out of the stadium.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Well, still finding their footing and for usc some questions,
you know about the defense even with a couple of
games under the belt of what's real, what's illusion in
scheme through a couple of weeks. Look, they couldn't be
any worse than they were last year. I mean that
was just an abomination. So new coordinator, new looksie at things.
(24:15):
And from the offensive side, yeah, it's hard to replicate
what you had with Caleb Williams. But certainly Moss has
been up to the task thus far. But for Michigan
the other side, a lot of change, a lot of attrition.
And we talked about it a little bit before with
the quarterback position and trying to have the next man
(24:39):
up as McCarthy leaves, and how much recruiting II negative
recruiting by other Big ten teams comes into play, the
sort of damocles with the NCAA still trying to exert
some power and perhaps punishment over the program. Maybe that
changes things up. But you have what you have and
for more income, but he you know, still trying to
(25:02):
figure out what this iteration of the squad is. Defensively,
they should get stronger with each passing week. So the
hope is that you can mitigate big plays early and
hang around. And I think that's that's gonna be the
calling card of this Michigan team tomorrow. So I'll still
take USC minus the six big swing in point spread
(25:25):
from what it was originally when it was on the board.
But but I think Michigan's game and they rebound and
really show a little bit of heart after what Texas
did to them, because that that that you got, you
gotta just let that one go. That's the old take
that out back and burn it kind of scenario.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
And look it as as the year goes on, it's
gonna look telling you as good as Texas is.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
I told you earlier in the show.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
If they don't win the national title right now, I'm surprised.
They're far and away better than anybody else in college football,
that loss won't look as bad.
Speaker 4 (25:57):
Right now, it looks bad, but the season goes on, Well.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
I'm in the number one team in the country, so
it doesn't look terrible now.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
Right now, We're gonna give you our upset special picks
in the NFL. But first, Steve Desager has what's trending
in the wide world of sports, as Dee, what do
you got? You don't need to worry about the Mets
in the Phillies tonight. We all allow that game went.
Don't need to give that final score. No, that's actually fine.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
It's all good. Just move on.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
Don't need Syracuse and Stafford either, don't need that. No, no, no,
just just just jump right in with the rest of MLB.
Speaker 7 (26:28):
The Phillies clinched a playoff first tonight, beating up the
Mets twelve to two. Phillies had trailed two to nothing
in the first. Alec Bohm four hits, including a three
run homer. The loss to David Peterson, who had been
nine and two but was out in the fourth inning,
allowed four earned runs. Mets short stuff Francisco Lindor was
still out with the sore back. Brave second basement Ozzie
(26:48):
Albi's returned after a broken wrist, went zero for five
and the Braves lost at Miami for three. The loss
to Charlie Morton, who gave up three runs in the first,
so the Braves still two games out of the last
to NL wildcard spot behind the Mets. The MLB regular
season ends a week from Sunday in the American League.
Minnesota in twelve innings one at Boston four to two,
(27:10):
a combined thirty two men left on base in that one.
The Twins are one game over Detroit now for the
final AL playoff spot, and the Mariners still two games
behind Minnesota. Detroit loss seven to one at Baltimore as
the Orioles hit five homers. Seattle won its game eight
two at Texas. Julio Rodriguez two home runs, five RBIs.
Jacob de Gram was the starter in Texas. He went
(27:31):
three innings with five strikeouts.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
No come on, Stott, see stop saying stuff.
Speaker 7 (27:37):
As I said last week, it was real and it
was spectacular. Houston beat the Angels nine to seven, Justin Verlander,
no decision, six runs allowed in four and two thirds,
but Kyle Tucker had four hits, including a solo homer
in Houston's won seven of nine Arizona with a win
Cleveland as well, but Kansas City was beaten at home
(27:57):
two to one by San Francisco. Bobby Wait Junior had
three hits, but the rest of the Royals were two
for twenty seven at the plate. The Yankees, in ten
innings won at Oakland four to two. Juan Soto did
not start due to a sore leg, but had a
tenth inning RBI pinch double. Garrett Cole the winning pitcher.
Nine innings, ninety nine pitches, just one run, two hits allowed.
(28:19):
Yankees lead Baltimore still by four games in the AL East,
and in the NLS, the Dodgers still four games over
the Padres. San Diego gave up to the White Sox
a tying two run homer with two outs in the ninth,
but the White Sox did lose again in ten innings,
three two, San Diego.
Speaker 8 (28:35):
The final. We've seen this movie before.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
Yeah, but they won social media?
Speaker 2 (28:40):
Okay, white sure?
Speaker 8 (28:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (28:42):
Final got a number of runs we scored was not
greater than the number of runs they scored.
Speaker 7 (28:47):
Thirty six wins, one hundred and eighteen losses for the
White Sox, the all time record won twenty in the
lost column.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
For they have to go, they have to go six
and two their last eight games to a being the Worskay.
Speaker 7 (29:02):
Just offhand here, how many stretches have they gone six
and two this year? When they had gone back to
June without winning three in a row.
Speaker 8 (29:10):
Isn't that right? So you're standing by on that one.
Speaker 7 (29:14):
The late game at Dodgers Stadium went to La over
Colorado six to four, show Hey Otani his fifty second
homer and his fifty second stolen base. Next week, San
Diego at the Dodgers for a three game series. Keep
in mind Mets Braves for a series next week as well,
and there is no one game playoff anymore in Major
League Baseball. All playoff tiebreakers in MLB come down first
(29:36):
to the head to head record between those teams during
the season. Mets Braves, for example, are currently tied at
five games apiece, with those three at Atlanta coming up
next week. In college football, Stanford kicked a thirty nine
yard field goal on the final play to win its
ACC opener at Syracuse twenty six, twenty four. Syracuse is
(29:57):
a team seventeen carries twenty six yards righth. Illinois on
Fox TV won in overtime at Nebraska in a Top
twenty five matchup thirty one, twenty four. Nebraska has now
believed it or not lost twenty five straight against ap
ranked opponents, and in overtime. Well, they've lost eight straight
OT games. Nebraska missed a thirty nine yard field goal
(30:18):
attempt with three minutes to go in regulation and mid
fourth quarter at Washington State, San Jose State leading the
Cougars thirty eight thirty one. Joel Embiid was given a
three year MAX extension by the seventy six ers. Chargers
quarterback Justin Herbert is questionable for Sunday with a high
ankle sprain, Seattle running back Kenneth Walker doubtful with an
oblique injury, tight end George Kittle of the Niners doubtful
(30:40):
hamstring injury, and Houston running back Joe Mixon doubtful for
Sunday ankle injury.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
Back to you, thanksweight, I got one question from the
two of you.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
Go ahead.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
You had the Embiid signing and extension. Do we know
who broke it with Woodes retired?
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (30:58):
Either do? I? Oh?
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Embid broken again? That's that that that's on brand for Embiid. Yeah,
I'm gonna I'm gonna break the news.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
Just saying, my god, you had that piece of news
and I'm like, I couldn't tell you.
Speaker 8 (31:13):
Yeah, Well, went back to work for a school, right,
he just.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
Saw the phone that said now calling Joel embiid He's
got the special ring, and he just says, Nope, I
can't do this the rest of my life.
Speaker 8 (31:26):
That was probably the decision.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
Thank you, Steve.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
Uh Now, you know, just really quick, just because you know,
we talked about the wildcard standings at the end, like
when it comes to the final wildcard in the National
League and the Mets and the Braves are buying for
it right now. Yes, the Diamondbacks are only a game
ahead of both of them, but all this and I'm happy,
Look the Mets have a two game lead over the
Braves and all this, But I kind of feel like
(31:52):
Jeremy Renner at the end of the town when they
were planning the the heist and Ben Affleck says, well, hey,
and if things go south, will reconvene here we'll do this,
And Jerem Rudder says, hey, if things go south, we're
holding court out on the street, right like I mean,
like I'm not no, no, no, We're holding court.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
On the street.
Speaker 1 (32:09):
Like I feel, hey, this is great, this two game leader,
but this thing is getting decided in Atlanta next week.
Like this whole you can this is great in this
two game Leader, this is all getting decided in Atlanta
next week.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
This weekend is irrelevant. This weekend is irrelevant.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
I mean, you can't win it this week, but you
can lose it. Sure that old rule rule of thumb
of just you know, mind your p's and q's. Can't
worry about whatever anybody else is doing. It's like, have
this conversation, you know, my daughter's squad and whatever. You know,
people are like, well, you know this is happening in
this game. It was like, well, you can't control that.
(32:44):
The only thing is, you know, they have to win
here and and go from there. You know, when it
comes to gold differential whatever, we can quibble about that.
But same thing for your mets. Take care of business.
Can't worry about what the other teams do.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
The Jason Smiths with Mike Carmon live from the tyreck
dot Com studio is all right, now we're gonna be
getting Mike and I are each gonna give you one
of our upset Special picks for the week in the NFL.
Why don't you kick it off? Give us your first one,
buddy that I'll I'll follow.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
You, all right. I am going to take green Bay.
Regardless of whoever is under under center. We don't know
the number, we don't know what what if it's Bart Starr,
now that would be damn cool. Okay, because he can
do the two step I think still and get the
ball to the running backs.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
Mkowski.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
Well then I'm going on the money line and I'm
betting the house. Okay, your daughter's college fund, all right,
Tennessee minus three at home, thirty seven and a half
is the total. But looking at green Bay's defense starting
to generate turnovers, and that's the big thing here is
that green Bay can play a little bit of ball control.
Will Levis, we'll be on his best behavior after the
(33:56):
last couple of weeks, I have to believe. But what
does that mean. He's still gonna absorb some sacks, He's
still gonna put the ball in harm his way. So
opportunity here for green Bay on the road.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
So if Scott Tolzen is playing quarterback, you're still about
Jim McMahon, Okay.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
Sure, Oh yeah. I don't know that he ever actually
got in a game for the Packers, though.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
I do know that he did go to the White
House and wore his Bears jerseys.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
Sorry, it's the only thing I had. I'm sorry, but
that's what I'm wearing right now.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
I'm here with the Packers, but I'm still a bear.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
Uh. First one I'm gonna give you. Give me the
Eagles getting three over the Saints.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Everybody loves the Saints. Everybody's darling because they thumped the Cowboys.
The Cowboys might just stink, understand that. And before that,
they beat the worst team in the NFL. All right,
the Saints didn't just somehow figure out the NFL with
pre snap motion, right, Yes, they're doing well. This is
an Eagles team coming off an incredibly difficult loss.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
They should be to a zero.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
Barkley's mistake, Sirianni going for it, the lack of aggressive
defense in the final drive of the game. This is
gonna be a much more dialed in and focused Eagles team.
And more importantly, they're going to get after Derek Carr quarterback.
There's no doubt in my mind they're gonna make his
life miserable. The Eagles are gonna win this game. I'll
take the three points even though I won't need them,
(35:15):
because the Eagles win on the field. But you know,
I'm not gonna turn him down, Mike us still take him.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
It's that rare opportunity of a double overreaction, particularly with
the way that the Eagles lost last week.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
So the rest of our NFL Upset Special picks coming
up next, as well as how bad are things gonna
get for the Cowboys?
Speaker 4 (35:35):
On Sunday, Oh oh, that's next.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
Jason and Mike Fox, Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith
Show with my best friend Mike Harmon, Yes, Sir, Live
from the Tirack dot Com Studios, Pac twelve after dark.
Washington State now lead San Jose State forty three thirty eight.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
Wow, five minutes to go in the fourth quarter?
Speaker 3 (35:59):
Look out interception and then the next play.
Speaker 4 (36:02):
Boom, oh look got this is fun.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
This is gonna end for another hour?
Speaker 4 (36:07):
No, oh, you're kidding?
Speaker 1 (36:08):
Yeah, I mean five minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
Maybe overtime. I wait, see.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
Thornton had that great diving interception, bounced around a bit,
and then a first play.
Speaker 4 (36:18):
Let's go.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
The explosiveness in this game is insane.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
Uh So, Mike and I are gonna give you the
last of our upset special picks. Then we're gonna break
down the game on Sunday that Wow, Cowboys better get
ready for a reality sandwich.
Speaker 4 (36:33):
They're not gonna want to take a bite of.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
But the last upset special pick, Yeah, I'll give you
my pick a few minutes ago. Give me the Eagles
getting three. Give me the Vikings getting to over the Texans, Right,
Sam Darnald, I know, look I told you, but I
said the beginning of the season, things are still gonna
go okay. And this is not really a Sam Darnald
selection as much as it's Minnesota's defense is really bleeping
(36:57):
good man and Brian Flores is getting a lot of
it tension the last few weeks. Now, and hey, you
watch they did to the forty nine ers last week.
I watch what the Bears, who are a top five
defensive unit in the NFL, did to the Texans, and
the Texans really struggled. We don't talk about that because
all the Bears had to do is have one play
on offense. They might have won. But Minnesota's defense might
(37:19):
be even better. So, yeah, this is gonna be a
game where their offense will score more points. Unlike the Bears,
they will back up the defensive effort. We're going to
talk about the Vikings defense a lot more. They will
slow down the Texans and all of their weapons. Give
me Minnesota plus two. I won't need the two points,
but Mike, I'll take it because you never turned down points.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
Originally a three and a half point numbers come down
on point and a half given the defensive returns. I'm
looking at the Giants getting six and a half on
the road at Cleveland thirty nine and a half. Another
barn burner here, but looking at the Giants defense to stifle.
Look that week one thing against the Vikings, you know
(38:00):
everything when a rye last week should have had a
win over Washington. This week going against a middling Cleveland offense,
I think the defense is able to rise up. And
for the Giants offensively, they're getting good returns five yards
of carry out of singletary. Jaln Hilt's been making a
lot of noise. Expect him to have a little bit
(38:21):
of activity here and be part of the game plan.
Obviously neighbors a star all already. This is not gonna
be pretty field goal contest, but I'll take the Giants
out right now.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
Speaking of pretty, so there's our upset special picks again.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
If you miss any of them.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Our best of podcast goes up in about ten minutes
on iTunes, iHeartRadio app wherever you get your podcast. The
Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon download ready to subscribe.
We'll Love you forever and ever and ever again. Podcast
goes up right after the show is over. Wherever you
get them. It's there Jason Smith, Mike Harmon and again
in about ten to fifteen minutes, it is there. The
(38:58):
Ravens and the Cowboys Son Game of the Week. We
talked about this earlier in the show Tonight. This is
gonna be another ugly one for the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (39:07):
I know.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
It's Oh the Cowboys just got crushed and here they
are back again. They're gonna be mad. The Baltimore Ravens
are gonna absolutely out physical Dallas. They're gonna run all
over them. And Lamar Jackson's gonna have his stamp Game
of the Year where I'm gonna put this on my shoulders.
We're zero and two. We shouldn't be zero and two. Mentally,
(39:27):
we weren't in a great place following the loss of
the Chiefs. We blew a game to the Raiders. This
is us coming in like a hornet's Nest and we
are gonna thump the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
They will jump on Dallas early. They'll score a ton
of points.
Speaker 1 (39:39):
I think they put forty on the board against Dallas
and Jackson has a big day and offensively, they just
gobble them up and it's gonna be a huge day running.
Dallas will score two becau it's not like the Ravens
defense is as great as it used to be. I'm
sure that that Dak and Ceedee Lamb will hook up
a couple of times, but they'll turn the ball over.
And this is the Ravens in a game that's gonna
(39:59):
shock everybody because the general consensus oll.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
Dallas will bounce back this week.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
Yeah, not against this Ravens team, not against what they're
gonna do offensively.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
Well, just remember the hurting that the Cowboys put on
Cleveland in Week one. They didn't finish like it was
a lot of field goals. So looking at this one,
still looking for balance, right, they don't have much they expected.
Average yardage on rush Blaze is below any acceptable threshold
(40:28):
at this point, and secondary receivers they get ferguson back,
but trying to get someone alongside ced Lamb is a
difficult proposition. I think they get after Dak Prescott and
then offensively it's Henry and it's a lot of Jackson
as a ball carrier, and you're seeing more and more
of Flowers rising up, and the dual tight end proposition
(40:51):
is difficult for that defense. In the back seven, even
with getting Digs healthy, missing Bland shows up big in this.
Speaker 4 (40:58):
One about a Fresca exit swollen dome.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon, Live from the
tirect dot Com Studios. I mean, I'd love to be
able to tell you that, Hey, Monday morning, it's not
gonna be Defcon one for the Cowboys, but that's coming.
Speaker 3 (41:13):
But here's the beauty of it. Either way we win
Smith because he uses Trading's are are zero to three
and we're trying to figure out Harriball and all everything
going on there, or the Cowboys lose and all's wrong
in Jerry's world.
Speaker 4 (41:31):
Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen dome.
Speaker 1 (41:33):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon, Live the tirect
