(00:49):
So two games on Monday Night, we talked about the
Bills in their dismantling of the Jacksonville Jaguars ninety four
to ten. Meanwhile, we watched the birth of a new
superstar with the Commander's defeat of the Bengals thirty eight
thirty three, first NFL game since nineteen forty with no
punts or turnovers. Crazy nineteen forty Back when the Brooklyn
(01:13):
Dodgers were in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
They finished second in the East.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
And the Bears won a title.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Ah.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
I think there was Cofax's rookie year back when when
the title game was supposedly a we kind of laid down.
That was a seventy three nothing one.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Well it's only appropriate that. What is it twenty one
years later? Yeah, after the big Black Sox scandal, then
we have the we laid down.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Yeah, But back then, the NFL was like, yeah, the
NFL is kind of a sport.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Okay, it's you know, all right, well it's not army.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
It was a part time thing.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
It's not Army and Navy and Notre Dame on Saturday
in college football.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
Especially when you get to say no Tradame, no, no
tra Dame, no Tradame. What is it?
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Army Navy both three and oh yeah yeah you have
both favorites this weekend. Oh I know it's son boy.
You know what, just once, I'd love to have an
end of season undefeated Navy, undefeated Army, you know, with
the with the Commander in Chief trophy out there, like
just just you would see all the great video of
from from the nineteen forties and fifties in college football,
(02:16):
and and Doc Blanchard and and Glenn Davis and all
this stuff. All you see unbelievable video. This is the
last time these teams were this good. Just once. I'd
like to see that, just one time. I'd want to
see it. And maybe this is the year, you never know,
maybe this.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
Is the football gods bless us with that. Can you
think about the montages of all of the greats, yeah,
oh yeah, yeah sure, and folks that went on to
become you know, heads of state.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, you know, generals helped win wars.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
You know, stuff like that. Yeah, little things like that.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
But tonight in the NFL, we saw the birth of
a new superstar. And if anybody doubted Jade and Daniels
doubted his ability, you needed to see nothing more than
this touchdown passing fourth quarter that cemented the win for
the Commanders over the Bengals. They got a snap it
on the third and seven and they do Bengals bring
(03:08):
the house.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Jade loads going up from the color of.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
The air zone.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
He did.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Damn the laughing analyst. Why did you contribute to that there,
Steve Well? I I kind of laughed, and then I
laughed some more all right, then, thanks, He's not He's
not the best color man in the business for nothing.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
MONI, dude, that sounded like it was lifted straight out
of an old damn song called These Hands.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
He's just laughing circus clown.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
And then he just starts doing a laugh that ends
the song. That's exactly where we got there.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
He drove him mad.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
It was such a great throat. Really wanted to Trent
Scott touchdown.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Good, great analysis, so great. But this play you watched,
Jade and Daniels get absolutely planted. Yeah, and like where
you it's one of those you go oh, but it
is a perfect pass where McLaurin runs it down and
avoids the interference. The obvious interference catches the ball. It's
a two score lead, and Watching holds on to win.
(04:17):
Cincinnati does get an old by the way touchdown near
the end. Zach Moss walks in. Congratulations to Zach Moss
fantasy owners for that pan point there.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
My condolences to those who got screwed by that opportunity
after the pass interference at the one.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
But they get the they get the on side kick,
they close the game. Look, Jaden Daniels is terrific and
watching him play, you can see how it easy is
in the pocket. He knows when to pull the football
down and run with it. In fact, he waits longer
than he should sometimes before he says, hey, I recognize
(04:55):
it's not there. I'm gonna pull the football down and
run with it. Right, that's the one thing you always think,
Well you have dual threat quarterbacks, they get to the NFL,
they need to understand, hey, stick stick with the play
a little bit longer. Right, You had to know he
sticks with the play. He buys time and then he
runs and he's so fast, Like there's times he doesn't
even look like he's running hard, and he's running around
(05:16):
linebackers and dbi's are just getting a finger on him
to push him out of bounds, like he's he runs
like Dion Sanders used to run with. Didn't look like
Dean was running very fast. But he's turned his head
around staring at people and they're running as fast as
a can and falling down. Yeah, he's just he's he's
going so much faster than everybody. And I mean he's
faster than arch Manning. I mean, just think about that.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Whoa, whoa, whoa he isosing like Michael Phelps against the
Great White Shark a few years ago.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
He is, and there's something to be said for him
because event you don't think he's gonna be start the
game tonight, but specifically that pass, which is in a
perfect position for him when he gets absolutely demolished.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
All night again. Yeah, guy who's rated like I mean,
his defenses right, He's supposed to be a wizard, so
he'll be able to shut down the youngster. He was
twenty one of twenty three.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
And not twenty one out twenty three for one hundred
and twenty yards, twenty one for twenty three for two
point fifty. He threw for two touchdowns. He ran for
forty yards in a touchdown like he's it man and not.
This is not and this is going to start the conversation.
Stuff man him or kaylaw The Bears made a mistake
with Kayleb Williams's hang on, that'll be tomorrow. Just let
me just just say this, Okay, let me just say
(06:28):
this right now. Caleb Williams is fine. Threw for three
seventy yesterday, nearly pulled off the upset. Caleb Williams does
not have an offensive line he is in there with
a lot with a lot of expectation on him and
not a lot of offensive line and not a lot
of running game. So it's not like he's in there
with all kinds of great weapons around him like we
(06:49):
thought he was going to have. When you don't have
an offensive line in a running game, doesn't matter that
your receivers are stacked. You're not going to get the
ball out there. But this is the difference between Williams
and Jaden Daniels is that the teams are pretty similar.
The Bears defense is a lot better than the Commander's defense.
Bears of a top five unit, so that's why. But
there's more expectation for Caleb Williams because he comes into
(07:11):
the league for two years been waiting for him. He's
the number one overall pick. Heisman Trophy winner goes to
a big heritage team in a large market like the Bears,
and the Bears loaded up in the offseason to get
him weapons. We'll go out and get DeAndre Swift, who stinks.
We'll go out and get Romadoonday, who's actually really good.
Keenan Allen can't get in the lineup. Cole Kamett is
huge well, he caught fifteen twenty passes yesterday for like
(07:32):
one hundred and fifteen.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
I'm a le got all the notes I sent him
about that. I went sawk set the anniversary Shawshank. So
we do ay, we.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Did all this, and there's expectation, and when Caleb Williams
doesn't come through, it's much more difficult.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Now.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
It's not to make an excuse, but it's a different
situation for Jayden Daniels, who comes in with zero expectation,
Like the Commander's not expected to contend at all in
the NFC East. This is come in, do your thing,
and you're out of the spotlight and let's see how
you grow. And in three weeks he's a star, all right,
Like the Commander's done the exact right thing of let's
(08:09):
go out let him play. They know the offense is
built around him and he's gonna do his thing. And
when you can do that sort of out of the spotlight,
because he's been able to because it's all been about
Caleb Williams, and really of all the quarterbacks, we pay
attention and bo Nix has been next because it's Peyton
and they actually won a game yesterday. But Daniel's been
able to say, Hey, I spend the entire summer. No
(08:30):
one's really going crazy for me. Nationally. I'm not a
big story obviously here in Washingtons, I'm the quarterback. I'm
a big story. But Caleb Williams is getting off all
the expectation, all the nerve, all the second guessing that
quarterbacks have, and I'm just able to go out and play.
There's something to be said for that. Now, if you've
switched them up and Jayden Daniels in Chicago, he'd be
(08:50):
going through the same difficulties Caleb Williams is now. Maybe
because Daniel's a little more escapable and makes more plays
with those legs, things to be a little bit better,
but it wouldn't be that much because you still need
to be protected. And the commander's offensive line is a
little bit better at that and they can give him
more and he's able to buy a little bit more
time because of it. So when I look at the
two guys right now, like, I still love Caleb Williams,
(09:11):
I love the Bears. Seeing him yesterday throwing the football,
being dynamic, most yards passing in the week in the NFL. Okay,
I love it and for Jaden Daniels. Yeah, the guy's
a star. He's able to develop at his own pace,
which is why he's where he is. But I can't
take that away because watching him play tonight, the cool
effectiveness he exhibits in the pockets, it's just it's something
(09:32):
to watch and you can tell this guy's going to
be a star for a long time.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
It's a bit of excitement. You know, in Washington, the
roster as assembled right at the skill position, as constituted
that there there was potential. But as you said, he
got to there's thirstiness in Chicago to have a quarterback
of any value. What's funny is you bring up to
(09:56):
his escapability and ability to run that would offset some
of the offensive line if only the Bears had had
a quarterback that could do those things. But anyway, that said,
you go and even Drake may right, should he or
shouldn't he? In New England? And then we watched him
come in and get beaten up, just like Jacoby Bressett
did last week. But just just that idea of you
(10:20):
just got to go to work with Cliff Kingsbury and
with a pretty good betty receiving options, I mean, Terry
McLaurin showed you tonight, first time he's really shown up
in the box score. Four catches one hundred yards in
that touchdown grab, showing why people liked him right, scary
Terry Zach Hurtz comes over, ageless, timeless so long as
(10:42):
he's healthy, just presents a big target over the middle,
and you saw Daniels able to find him scraping over
the middle. I'm really still stunned he's playing longer than
Juliart's I really am. I really am surprised. And I
think she called it quits when she got pregnant again
and just said.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
But I thought of all him like that, he's not
gonna be playing. She'll still be playing.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
No, No, there were a couple of moments, I mean,
the last couple of years where it looked like it
might go the other way. But you know, here it is.
He latches on and becomes a big target here. But
just keep on going down the line. Brian Robinson and
Austin Eckler, hopefully Austin Eckler's all right. Had to leave
the game with a concussion, but huge kickoff return and
he scored a touchdown on the ground before he left,
so you got to lose a little bit of balance
(11:23):
there for him and Kingsbury getting him settled and taking
advantage of the opportunities there again against the Cincinnati defense,
they did whatever they wanted and that was a big surprise.
And also, you know, just a shining example of how
quickly if you're brought along properly, that you can and
he was able to operate without a huge spotlight. We look,
(11:45):
everybody's different, and I said, and Williams has been handling
the spotlight pretty well. It's just been with so much
expectation it's it gets to be a weight on you.
And Daniels has coming very luckily, you know, luckily and fortunate. Hey,
it's goning do my thing. Man, No one expects any
thing of this team. They're just hoping I'm good. No, Right,
the Washington can't get past content.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
The last I think the last ten twelve years of
the Washington football team has not been great. They're just saying,
can we just have a positive headline on the field.
So the bar is really low. The bar in Chicago
is really yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
But here's the other thing that needs to be said here,
Dan Quinn, respected guy, right, our guy, Jay Glazer, you know,
it's one of the guys that that he talks to
and and and we've watched it for a year. You
got adults in that room, man, You got adults in
that room in Chicago. The most interesting thing about ibra
Flus was his beard. Yeah, yeah, Well there's a good
(12:37):
defensive coordinator if you have a good look. And Shane
Waldron I sent you the video posted, but I reposted
the video of folks asking Jackson Smith and Jigba and
other folks, what are they getting? Wait, this is live.
That's awkward to shay, Oh good luck. You know that
kind of thing. And you saw it in that ill
(12:59):
fated you know, goal line stand inane play calling followed
by the hey, we scored a touchdown and let's go
celebrate with the stupid ass football instead of actually recognizing
we need to go to for two. Now, let's burn
a time out and then run a play hurriedly because
we're all discombobulated adults over here, not so much over here.
(13:22):

The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon.
And you know, just something really weird? What's that lined up?
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Weird?
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, and Oliver On, No, no, no, you.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
Just weird games.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
The Jaguars are weird.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
They're weird, weird, you know, like when you when you
hear things like and if you start pink Floyd's a
Dark Side of the Moon and the.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Third Roar of the Lion it lines.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Up with all of Wizard. So, as part of our
multi screen experience here at work, once all the games
are over, everybody you know turns on movies. Right, so
on two TVs at the same time, one on top
of the other is The Departed and Wolf of wall Street.
And at the exact same time, okay, the exact same
(15:34):
time that Leo and Wolf of Wall Street's telling everybody
I'm not leaving, right, I'm not and everybody's yelling, I'm
not leaving, I'm not leaving. He's doing that speech when
James Badge Dale shoots him in The Departed and kills
him in the Sorry Spoiler and kills him in the elevator.
So I'm like, Wow, the exact same time he's telling
everybody he's not going anywhere is the exact same time
(15:57):
he dies in the movie above It going somewhere, I
know because one is on networks, is on cable where
there's commercials, and the one is on streaming.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
It's it's crazy.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
It's a mad world, I tell you.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
And man third Roar of the Lion, just listen to it. Man,
the Wizard shows up. You hear money. It's weird, dude,
it's weird.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
No, I want to go learn how to play that that song,
maybe singing a few bars as we go through. But yeah,
it's a It's an odd convergence, no question about it.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
I mean, I mean, really really I can't get over
that well, but.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
I mean it is really symbolic and emblematic of what
we watched on Monday night football. You've got one team
that just said I'm not leaving. You thought I was done.
Bills and the other well now now defeated. In the
Cincinnati Bengals representing Leo in the elevator.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
On the third roar of the Lion, you start to
depart it and it's impartant. Sheen comes in and when
they throw him off the building, you.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Here, President Bartlett, No.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
You're free falling by Tom Petty. The first line's coming.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Look, I just got dark um picture of Bartlet flying
through the sky in slow motion.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Uh so again, just a weird thing.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
It's really it's really weird, man U so weird, say
it fifteen more times.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Owen three and three and zero. Let's start Owen three.
The Bengals start oh and three after losing the Commanders tonight,
and this is a bit of a shock for a
team that had big time expectations this year and now
basically their season's over.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
You're owing three. You don't make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Doesn't happen, right, Well, once in the last twenty years,
four times in the last thirty five years, you don't
make it. And it's too much of this to be
a coincidence. But look at the three teams that had
the most drama all the way up until Week one.
Personnel team drama. Who had the most drama the Bengals,
(18:18):
right because Jamar Chase was holding in. T Higgins didn't
know if he wanted to play, was going to play. Bengals,
Cowboys we signing Cede Lamb, We signing Dak We sad
the morning of of Week one, the Cowboys signed Dak
Prescott and the forty nine ers are we keeping Brandon Ayuk?
Are we trading him?
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Are we not?
Speaker 1 (18:38):
They sign him the week before the season. What about
Trent Williams, he wants more money, No, we'll sign him
week before the season as well. All three of these
teams stink right now. They all stink. They all had
they all had big time thoughts coming into this year,
super Bowl type dreams, but they all had drama that
bled to the regular season.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
And as a result, here they are and they all stink. Right.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
The Bengals, they've been. They were dealing with the Chase
Higgins thing every day Dallas Cowboys. Every day was Dak
and seedy. The forty nine Ers was we're gonna keep him.
We're gonna sign this guy. We're gonna sign it. We're
gonna keep Trent Williams. We're gonna trade at you we're
gonna not and not that this is something that affects
what goes on in preparation for a game, but the
focus that it takes and the knuckleheadedness away from the field,
(19:25):
and how you don't know, how are we going to
incorporate this guy in when he does show up? What
are we gonna do if he's not? What are the
reps gonna look like in practice? There's no coincidence that
these three teams all had big time drama to deal
with that went right up to week one, and you
look at that one and two, one and two and
oh and three. That's not a coincidence.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Yeah, I mean when we go through I mean each
each has that in common, but very different circumstances to
get us to where we are in terms of their records.
Right for Cincinnati, there was still the expectation with Joe
Burrow upright, that life would be good. Okay, Chase played,
gave you some plays, even started things off right. First
(20:06):
drive tonight forty one yard touchdown reception, and offensively they
did what they needed to right. T Higgins actually was
the target on the would be two point conversion that
would have made it a three point game, he gets
interfered with no call, but hey, life goes on. That's
the life of the NFL at this point. But yeah,
certainly enough drama swirling around and all those expectations that
(20:28):
they were going to be at the top of the
AFC year after year, that seems to have been torn asunder.
For Dallas, there's always faulty roster construction, and we talked
about that a lot in the off season. I guess
Ceedee Lamb whether he would show up without a new
contract was in doubt, but Dak was going to be
there right still one more year and playing and prove
(20:51):
it himself and whatever else. But that wasn't going to
fix the defense. And Dak Prescott's not lining up a
tailback at any point, right He can't go full onto
old Bugs Bunny as quarterback and running back. So you
got a faulty roster construction from good old Jerry and
Steven there. And then you get to San Francisco. And
(21:12):
while Brandon Ayuk obviously has not been in number one,
and many would have argued before this, the most important
receiver that they had was Deebo Samuel Anyway as a
runner and all around gadget kind of guy, but you
know he's now one of the many on the injury list.
For the forty nine ers, Juan Jennings shows up, scores
(21:34):
three touchdowns. But for the forty nine ers, Trent Williams
set it and forget it right, thirty six year old
guy knows how to play, get his body ready. He
comes back in rest of the offensive line, still good,
and now everybody's hurt. Right, So the football gods done
doth smite them in three very different ways all the
off season.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
All that stuff, and here they are not finding a
way to start because you don't just put the oh,
we got it done for week one, Well that just
because you get it done for week one doesn't mean
the slatest white clean you still have whatever you've been
dealing with residually over the course last couple of months.
And look at the one team that handled the best,
the Jets, Right, they didn't let us On Reddick become
a storyline. He's not here, he'll be here when he's here,
(22:17):
and it could have been something that overwhelmed the team
and he's not. What are we gonna do? How are
we gonna dole out our playing time? And the Jets
figured it out, and they made it. They made it
not a story. The Jets found a way to do
the right thing. This is what crazy year. This is
The Jets have done the right thing and all these
other teams have not.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Well, the beauty of it for the Jets was that
anything going on with Reddick was overshadowed not only by
these other teams, but also more of Aaron Rodgers. Right,
is he gonna be healthy? Is he gonna be ready?
We're asking more questions about that, and his relationship with
Robert Salah, how much he liked Egypt, all of those
kind of things, as opposed to whether Reddick was gonna
show up. The only time we ever really mentioned Reddick
(22:55):
was when they'd give us reports of how much money
he'd lost by not being there. Ah, look at how
big the fine is at this point. Right, because otherwise
the Jets went about their business and they were able
to game play because he was an additive, right, they
didn't that defense was already gonna be good before he
walked in the door. And guess what, they are still
pretty good. And obviously in week three they beat up
(23:18):
on an overwhelmed New England squad. We'll see what happens
moving forward, But all signs point to a squad that
built on what was a strong twenty twenty three, at
least on that side of the ball, now being matched
as Rogers gets healthy, more confident in his body, and
gets a bigger relationship with all those wide receivers. Even
if teams continue to try to scheme to take Garrett
(23:40):
Wilson away, guess what veteran quarterback who knows how to
pick you apart with other guys. So yeah, for the Jets,
it worked out quite nicely because that wasn't a guy
where he said, you know, our whole offense goes to
hell if he's not here, like the forty nine Ers
when Trent Williams, not with Brandon Ayuk, but with Trent Williams.
If he's not here, this goes away. Now, the Christian
McCaffrey news today that he was going to Germany to
(24:04):
seek alternate treatments and health and advice on his leg
and his achilles problematic. Rock Purdy had the MRI still
a back injury.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
So you don't know what the hell's going today day
to day, But then again, aren't we all day to day.
Speaker 4 (24:19):
But just the number of guys that are now hurt.
It's like the football God said, yeah, we like continuity.
For years, you guys enjoyed great success with your continuity.
You tore it asunder this offseason. So here's what you get. Meanwhile,
the Jets somehow escaped the fickle finger, at least to
this point. So from zero to three, now to three
(24:41):
and oh, right the other side of the coin. Tonight
we watch the Bills go to three and oh as
they blow out the Jaguars. And look, we talked a
lot about Trevor Lawrence. We've told you for a long
time he's just a guy, and everybody's going to be
coming around to that now after what they saw to you.
We'll find the podcast. Yes, the sync it up with
the third roar of the Lions. Yeah, we've said, hey man,
and you'll have all the greatness you need.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
They're in every third blink is slower. Uh.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
The Bills improved to three and oh. Three three and
oh teams in the AFC, Bills, Steelers, Chiefs, Bills are
the best team in the AFC, and it's not close
of the three and o teams. Let's see what the
teams that haven't lost three and oh, teams, Bills are better,
the Steelers better than the Chiefs. Right, you're talking about
rarefied air. How do we quantify this? The Bill's offense
(25:28):
better than both those teams, without a doubt. They're dynamic,
they have the best right now, they have the quarterback
playing the best. Because as much as I like what
Justin Fields is doing and how well he played yesterday,
Allen is better, and Allen's playing better than Patrick Mahomes
is right.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
Now, it's more. Yeah, it's a more explosive offense that
can hit you as both both they're running that game
and as receivers.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
And their defense is really good. Not quite the defense
of the Steelers or the or the Chiefs, but it's
still really good. And they are domin and they've been
just getting better from week one till now. Like week one,
Oh man, you held off the Cardinals. Wait, Cardinals offense
is legit. But why are the Bills better than both
of these teams? As much as I like the Steelers,
(26:12):
the Steelers still struggle too much offensively and all the
game breakers that they had, You thought, hey, Justin Fields
has to get the ball to them. Well, Jalen Warrens
hurt Najie Harris is just a guy. George Pickens's can
be invisible. Pat Fryermouth is not Travis Kelcey. So suddenly
the Steelers offense is not what we thought it was
and they struggled too much to score. And for the Chiefs, yeah,
(26:35):
they're three to zero. I know they're getting all this love. Oh,
they're learning how to win games. Do they really strike
you as how the Patriots would win with Tom Brady
or do they strike you as a team now that
is escaping, because their escaping is what's going on right now.
It's not Metrick Mahomes is not playing at the high
(26:55):
level that he was a couple of years ago. He's
become kind of a game manager if you think about it,
last year plus now. And are they beneficiaries of a
couple of fortunate penalty calls?
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Yeah? Are they making enough plays to win?
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Yes, I don't want to take that away from them,
But this is not a team that, hey, when it
comes down to it, we throw their hammer down and
know how to win. This is Hey, we're escaping, right.
We had the falcons on the doorstep and we escaped, right.
We had a penalty we should have and we escaped.
We escaped the week before. Our offense is not playing well.
Travis Kelcey is not getting open. The guy might be done.
(27:32):
He might be a thirty five year old tight end
that can't get any separation. And because he was getting separation,
Mahomes be throwing the ball to him, just like he's
done for the past six years.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
But he's not. And the Chiefs are a team right
now that are those wiley veterans where, hey, once in
a while we're crafting, we find a way out to
out maneuver you because we've done this before. Eventually that
catches up with it. You can't keep doing that forever,
and eventually you start playing teams that are playing at
a higher level. Can I see the Chiefs winning division
this year? Absolutely, because the AFC West is not very good.
(28:03):
But I can see the Chiefs coming in. Oh, here
come the Chiefs and they get blown out in their
first playoff game, and it's what just happened to us. Well,
you played a team that's a lot better, that's playing
a lot better. That's not going to allow You're not
going to fall into traps and make mistakes and you're
not gonna be able to escape the chief The Chiefs
aren't winning games with a winners mentality. Now they're escaping
and eventually that catches up to you.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
And that's why right now for these teams, Yeah, Bills
number one over both the Steelers and the Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
Yeah, absolutely, I mean both sides of the ball, and
even defensively. For the Bills, they've been able to work
around some early injuries. We'll see how that plays out
over time, but working with good balance to running backs,
a pretty solid up and coming receiving corps, and they're
just getting to know each other, like that's the fun part,
the only part. Guys that have been there at the
tight ends and Khalil Shakir and Kean Coleman's only going
(28:52):
to become a bigger part of what they do as
the season goes on. For the Chiefs, they're curious, you know,
because the old Patriots, you know, pre Randy Moss, right,
I guess he's like the line of demarcation and things
of play defense do just enough to win. It's kind
of where we're at here, and but it's not it's
certainly not the same level of aesthetics, heart heart stoppers
(29:16):
and whatever. But for the Chiefs. The biggest concern I
have is how they fix the run game. With Pacheco
going down with the broken leg, that door is wide open, right.
He stabilized a position that had been a revolving door
for a while, and it looks like as that door spins,
some of the same old names are trying to come
back through it. So I don't I don't know that
(29:38):
you're gonna be able to get the same balance that
that offense had. Travis Kelcey to your point, step slower. Yeah,
they might have his second second guy there, but Mahomes
isn't trying to fit it into him like he has
in years past. Target number down Now, does it open
more opportunities in theory for Xavier Worthy and and other
receivers down?
Speaker 2 (30:00):
No?
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Yeah, sure, And Rashide Rice has shown I think through
three games all right, he's a number one and just
getting better. So you've got that. But to your point,
they're not running away and hiding. So can you weather
the storm and find some magical elixir that's gonna give
you that jolt to your offensive game? I don't know.
We saw it in the playoffs a year ago, but
(30:22):
how many times can you go back to the Well,
this Bills team is something much different, much more formidable
as we go forward.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
And the rate I told you the Bills, I thought
had Josh Allen. I know, I know, Buddy, I know,
I know.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
I thought it was Josh Allen dating Hailey Steinfeld, the
other super supergroup nobody talks about.
Speaker 2 (30:43):

Speaker 1 (30:52):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon
Live from the tire rack dot Com Studios. And boy,
how close was I when I told you Ravens were
gonna thump the Cowboys and Lamar Jackson is gonna be
the number one quarterback in Fantasy this week?
Speaker 4 (31:08):
Well, you didn't get either of them, right.
Speaker 3 (31:10):
I got so close. I was third and they were
winning twenty eight to six.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Well, and then QB one, Yeah, Deck, and just because
then the Cowboys ran back and then made it a
game because you know what, the Ravens are gonna give
you an opportunity.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
This was a blowout from the beginning. Ravens, of course,
have trouble closing teams out, but they did it yesterday,
and we told you that Lamar Jackson is gonna a
big dia se. He's got one hundred yards rushing. You
had almost eighty. Okay, I'll take the l But uh,
this should not be surprising, right. The only thing that
should raise your eyebrows a little bit is that the
Cowboys melt down as happening earlier than expected, right because
(31:50):
coming into the seat, we told Look, we told you
this is not a team that got better in the offseas.
They didn't sign anybody. They went through the year and
Jerry Jones decided to give Dak and CD money. He's
all in on this year, meaning I'm not gonna spend
money on anybody else. Right, And so we told you
they're gonna be bad. But the beginning of the year,
first couple of weeks, they might be with the new
(32:11):
excitement of the season and Dak getting paid. Maybe he
comes out with a couple of big efforts.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
And the Skin had a quarterback. Now, of course that
was a field goal kicking contest. That guy as a hero.
Week two, you get drummed by New Orleans. But who
the hell saw that coming?
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Yeah, no, it looked good like Okay, early on. Then
it will really then it will really get bad. But
now you can see how bad it is. Dak walking
in through the tunnel yesterday saying, you want to jump off,
jump off, like jump off the bandwagon, like he wanted
that message out there on a camera somewhere. You want
to jump off, jump off? Right, Dak's yelling at Seedee Lamb,
Michael Parsons is yelling at his teammates, and it's just
(32:47):
the Cowboys have imploded. This is not surprising because I
knew this was coming, but honestly, I thought it would
be sometime in October, that the first three weeks or
so would be all right. But it's just happening faster
because you can't deny that this is not a team
that was.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
Built to succeed this year. They were good last year.
Were they great?
Speaker 1 (33:06):
No, not even close. And when you're good in one
year and you don't get better, you're not gonna be
as good the next year. It just doesn't happen, you know,
you don't stay even zero s and suddenly look how
good we are. This was to be expected, but this
early with the Saints and and then yesterday with the
Raven WHOA did not see it this early.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Noh, and then you got a big game on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Suddenly playing the Giants on Thursday night's a big game.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
But think about it, the Giants two weeks ago, if
you had a kicker or actually had a contingency plan
for your kicker getting hurt, which they didn't, they should
have beaten Washington. Right they should be two and one
right now?
Speaker 3 (33:48):
Yeah, yeah, right, yeah, but they're not.
Speaker 4 (33:50):
But you play the games as they go, and you
should be able to run the football on on the Cowboys.
That's what we watched. And guess what, the Cowboys can't
run the football, which is what we surmised and expected
with the roster that was put forth this season. Like
you look at the division and it's like, all right,
what are the Eagles going to be? Don't know, Giants
expected them to be bad, Washington good enough to be dangerous,
(34:13):
and then you see tonight in a big primetime spot,
it's like, all right, they might be arriving a little
bit faster than anticipated. With mister Daniels, we'll see all right,
it's it's it's one game, but with three games through
and he's looked the part as Jaden Daniels so now
you move forward the division, there's no walkover wins, which
is what you had a little bit of last year,
(34:36):
and Dak's gonna be able to pass you through and
you'll win a couple of games maybe that you shouldn't
shoot out kind of scenarios, but overall, the lack of
a run game is going to bite them in the
answer repeatedly because the NFC got better as all. Like,
that's the other thing that can't be denied out there, right,
whether you improve or not. It's the it's the old
thing I say with you know, hey, I don't like
(34:57):
playing office politics. Guess what, the office the politics are
moving around you. So either you're active and you're paying
attention to what's happening, or someone is moving you around
as a pawn and you just go with it. This way,
you know, you could say, well, we didn't get any
better or worse, like the roster's just to say it's
like that's fine, but you got better or worse because
(35:18):
of what everybody else did. You don't match up as well.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
With When you stand still, people pass you in anything,
whether you're in line with the supermarket or playing in
the NFL, people pass you now the good news is,
here's a good news for the Cowboy.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
We'll give you a sunny side of it.
Speaker 4 (35:33):
I want to know what Dak was yelling at though
he was a kid, saying, say it ain't so the collective?
Speaker 1 (35:38):
You who's that you want to jump off the bandwagon?
Jump off? Okay, that's great. I will say this. I
think it's good for the Cowboys to have a game Thursday.
I think it's very good that they have to turn
them on this yeah, and then get back to playing
on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
When they lose on Thursdays, Mike McCarthy get fired. Who
gets fired? Were first him or Doug Peterson?
Speaker 1 (36:00):
You'll know it'll happen, Like if when Belichick's on the
air doing some kind of media hit and they go,
he goes, guys, I gotta go to the headset. I
just got hired. I just got hired. I gotta go,
I gotta go.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
I thought Bill just just added an Instagram account. It
says it's been disabled, and.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
You see him walk off the set and he walks
onto the TV below it like.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
This comes on, Hey, there's Bill. I've come coaching now.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
Suddenly he's fully dressed in team gear.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
Yeah, he just says, hey, Mike, give me your hat,
give me the headset, give me give me all.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Right, great, thanks, I appreciate it. All right, that's good. Yeah,
but it is good.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
They're playing early because they need to wash, wash this
away and play Thursday night.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
I can't wait three days.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
Let's go exit out, out of Fresco, Exit Swelling Dome.
