(00:50):
big night at basketball. We had the Cooper Flag breakout
game and then the Cooper Flag hrodown down, final thirty
break out and break down game. I'm that is, I mean,
look there is having a bad thirty seconds in the game.
And look Duke Kentucky, big marquee game in college basketball tonight.
Yes it's November, but but.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Good to get one of those early though, Right, what
do we do as opposed to directional school like a
lot of the other warm ups for the eventual you know,
holiday tournament.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Holliday holiday holiday holiday. College basketball has needed a big
star player since Zion. Right, we had the great excitement
for Wemby, but Wemby wasn't in college. You've had other
really good player, Anthony Edwards has turned into a really
great player, but we didn't follow Anthony Edwards every move
when he was a Georgia before coming into the draft.
You got to go back to Zion and Duke and
(01:42):
the attention there, and yes, the school is part of it.
Duke is the evil Empire and that is and that's
always going to get more attention when you're a star
at Duke or North Carolina or Kansas, but specifically Duke
because they own that evil empire status in our lives.
Now it's been a few years when Mike Krzyzewski retired,
the hatred of Duke walked away, the the the overall
(02:05):
wait to see Duke lose. Duke just became just another team. Hey,
they were another really good team. Do you hate them? Yeah?
I don't know. Right, John Shire is a pretty good coach,
but that's not the same but now.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
They've been wagging his finger at you for third years.
He's not showing up in the tournament every year and
there they are and you're not.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
You're not hate watching Shire, No, it's said no. Uh.
Duke and Coach K. Look, it was a great show
for a long time and they held college basketball up
year to year. The teams with the good teams, uh changed,
but Duke was always in. Coach K was always the
big show. They always had a star player or two
(02:46):
and it worked right as much as the last couple
of years have been for Yukon Danny Hurley is fun?
Is he a little bit abrasive? Yeah? But is he
Duke now? Not really?
Speaker 3 (02:54):
But they they haven't hit that tipping point yet, right,
maybe a little bit because of carry into the NBA.
It's like, look we've reunited when he nicks and blah
blah blah.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
But it's for blah blah Coach K in all those years.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Look, speaking as a guy with you know southside, part
part Polish, just like Coach K, you know, kindred spirit there.
But for years like it was always what is Duke
gonna do? And in the tournament people would pick Duke
to go really far and then he'd be mad if
they flamed out early or if they did make the
Final four. It's like, ah, there they are again. For
(03:29):
all those years, it was Duke, it was North Carolina.
You had three or four teams that were always Kentucky
was one of those teams. Kansas became part of that,
that equation, but it became the all Right, even if
I don't really pay attention to them for the rest
of the year, they're shoved down my throat when I
watch college basketball coverage. So, yeah, coach k was that
guy and he's gone.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
And now this is one of those nights where you
understand this is gonna be a different college basketball season
than the rest. Douke, Kentucky, all the pageantry and Cooper Flagg,
who is the most highly touted incoming freshman again going
back to Zion Williamson, which is a big deal. How
good is he? You see the highlights, you see some
of the plays he makes, and yeah, but I don't
(04:12):
think the hate was there. No, But here's the thing.
But that's why tonight was such a big deal. Because
you had the game, and you had the pageantry, and
you had the final thirty seconds of a tie game,
seventy two to seventy two. You know, Cooper Flag is
going to get the ball, right, He's gonna be the
number one pick in the draft. He's gonna make somebody
happy for the next fifteen years.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
He'll turn eighteen in late December, and well, he's the
next guy we're gonna say.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
You know, he's only seventeen years old, right, you know
he's only seventeen years old. He's a child. Say that
about the guy from Alabama, but now we're saying it
about him instead. But the final thirty seconds tonight against Kentucky,
I don't know that you could have a worse thirty
seconds in a game than he had. He dribbled into
a turnover that Kentucky got. The ball went to the
(04:57):
free throw line, and it wasn't like he dribbled in
and was had double coverage and the ball got No.
He dribbled into a bad one on one situation and
Kentucky was able to just steal the ball away from him.
So that's turnover number one. Kentucky makes two free throws,
they go up by two. Okay, we're coming down here.
Cooper Flag's gonna get the ball again. Cooper Flag gets
the ball, he tries to go baseline, he gets died
(05:18):
up really well and steps out of bounds or puts
his hand out of bounds a couple of times and
turns the ball over again. So now Kentucky gets the
ball back. They hit free throws, they go to the
free throw line, they hit one to go up by three.
Still five seconds left. Duke needs to make sure needs
them to miss, and they miss the free throw that's
(05:38):
going to put him up four, except Cooper Flag doesn't
go up for the rebound the way he should. He's
the closest to the basket, and it gets grabbed by
Kentucky and they go to the free throw line and
hit two more free throws and that ends the game.
So you're talking about in the final thirty seconds, you
get your pocket picked, you dribble the ball out of bounds,
(05:59):
and you don't try hard enough for a rebound that
is easy that it's not like everybody crashed the boards,
because this is a situation at the end of a
game where Kentucky's got everybody going back, right, You're not
gonna try to crash the boards for that rebound. This
is Hey, if you miss it, we want to make
sure we get all our guys back, so they can't
get can't the ball, can't get the ball down. They
(06:20):
have one guy up so it's not just an easy grab,
turn and fire right. So you have one guy up there.
The one guy up there is able to get the
ball away from Cooper Flag and the ball doesn't take
a really bad bounce, It doesn't bounce crazy off the rim.
This just kind of goes into his hands. He bobbles
it and back out and it's grabbed from behind him
and they go to the free throw line again, hit
two more free throws to win. That's as bad a
(06:43):
thirty seconds you can have in a basketball game. Now,
that's the thing. However, tonight was an amazing night for
college basketball. Tonight is the night that this season was
born and it became a season that everybody's gonna pay
attention to. Now, yes, we're only in the middle of
November and it's starting for everybody, but with the status
of Duke and Cooper Flag that now has become someone
(07:06):
you root for, root against. Whatever it is you saw
this tonight, it's gonna be a huge story the next
twenty four hours. His turnovers at the end of the game.
I guarantee you Doug Gottlie will spend his entire show
tomorrow talking about the final thirty seconds of this game. Right,
Dan Patrick will spend his whole show talking about Cooper
Flag and Duke. That's how big a deal this is
going to be the college foot The college basketball season
(07:27):
started huge tonight. This will be the best college basketball
season we have had in a long time, simply because
we have Duke is back to being that hated team
and they have the big superstar that you can respect
how good he is and marvel what he is. But boy,
you want Duke to lose because hey, it's fun with
Duke being the evil Empire. We all like retro. Retro's
gonna go back. This is a grant, a big deal
(07:48):
retro and back to twenty fifteen not liking Duke. This
is awesome. This is going to be the best college
basketball season we have had. For relevancy, for TV ratings.
Duke is gonna be on every single game possibly can
because of Cooper Flag. I mean, tonight tells you, hey,
we are landing with authority and we are showing you
we are gonna be a big deal this year. This
(08:09):
will be a huge year for college. But it's a
good start.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Twenty six twelve, two and two, nine of nineteen from
the field. Last five minutes, he had six points to
go along with, as you said, a couple of turnovers
and the mix button missed box out or rebound, however
you want to term it. That leads to a crushing
loss for the number six Duke squad. And that's the key.
(08:32):
They're highly ranked in against another blue blood program and
they go down here in a big way. Right, Normally,
the NBA is salty because like, hey, it was supposed
to be our night with the first games of the
gup Man, he's a tournament. You know, you get to
the I real will remember you video to talk about
(08:52):
the you know, the Lakers in their path to last
year's ist and now we started again. But outside of
all the injury, this was gonna be the big jumping
off point. Clay's back playing against the Warriors. Now no, no
Cooper flag wins. College basketball gets to rule the day.
Coach k is probably in the B block of out
one of Dan's show tomorrow. I don't know this for fact.
(09:15):
I'm just guessing that he likely shows up, but it's
just the idea that you do have a star that
has gotten all of the the flowers thrown in in
the pathway right the you know, insert whatever movie montage
you want of people being getting their love as they
(09:37):
come forward. And for Cooper Flag, all the former players
that have talked about the development of his game and
how mature he is for the age, well he's gonna
need it after that last thirty seconds, right, you want
to test someone's metal pretty early, this is it because
he was every bit the part for the first thirty
nine minutes or thereabouts. And then you know, bilding character,
(10:00):
all of those great cliches that we can run because
the highlight reel ended and it became a horror show
in the final three thirty seconds there with those possessions
again where you're driving into the corner, not like you
were forced and chased by a double team into the corner.
So like the decision making right there was the bit
(10:21):
of a head scratcher.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
It's like, you know, the kid when you're playing.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
And maybe maybe it's you know, my own auto biographical
thing where you drive and you hit some random, crazy
ass shot and so the next time you get the
ball down the court, like I'm gonna do that again.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
In this case, he did the same thing twice. It
turned it over twice. It wasn't a no I've got
to make up for you know.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
I made a spectacul place like, no, you had a
bad play and then and then you went right back
to that same spot.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
And both like you were going to try to erase it.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
And it was one on one d that the guy
used the the end line as a defender and he
got you twice.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
And I want to say that there was no other
I looked like they were both clearout plays for him.
I don't know, it didn't look like there was an
option for Hey, if they do w here's where the
ball is gonna go. Like yeah, they we're gonna guard
you one on one and make you do it. And
there was no other option. Cooper Flag was stuck both
times he had the basketball, and he turned it over
the first time and he dribbled out. He didn't dribble
(11:17):
out of bounds. He kind of fell down and put
his hand down on the line. He slipped a little bit,
like I don't know what's control of the ball. I mean,
I don't know if I've ever seen a guy put
his hand on the line twice in one play, Like
he puts it on the hand wall, there's oh no,
he pulls it up. Nope. Then he puts his other
hand on the end and the balls hitting the hands
out of bout.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Yeah, like just very odd sequencing, but just you know,
to try to get there and maybe you're thinking you're
gonna be able to rope a dope and then get
a baseline drive out of it. But great, you know,
base defense there to to not give up the space,
to not give up the driving angle, and it was
clear he wasn't going to get rid of the ball,
(11:59):
right who was gay? It is a clear out for
me on the option, and I've got to go make
a play. And both times he's dispossessed and turns it over.
And so you get the opportunity for Kentucky to take
this game, to take down the number six after Cooper
flag what had been a great headliner story here on
(12:21):
a primetime spot with his twenty six and twelve. I
think I'm gonna remember this, right, I'm gonna remember the
last thirty. OHK, I miss the you know, remember the
jump shots. You know, you know there's only one person
who was upset about this? Who's only one person? Who's
one persons outside of Duke? Outside of Duke, there's one
person who was upset?
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Who's that? John Caliperry? Well, I could have won this game.
I could have won this Gat could have won this game.
Dumb man. Guys, Wow, you got coach cats. I could
have won this game. That's the And how much would
that be missing him? Sound like the cowardly lion? How much?
I mean? Boy, the game would have been even better
if Ala Perry because of that. Yeah. Oh man, it's
(13:04):
the biggest win Kentucky had in years. And now I'm
coach at Arkansas and I'm still still trying to figure
out my tim still try to get the ten guys
on the team. I mean, did we really think Kentucky
was gonna lose when they got a guy named Pope
on their team? No, that is true. You have a
guy named no Pope will get you does help, We'll
get you there. One hundred absolutely got you got Pope
and and and uh you had Cardinal and you had
(13:27):
no You're going back to Brian Cardinal with the Purdue
boiler Makers had Mark Pope.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
Brian Cardinal a guy who will we talk about collegiate
players like, hey, he's gonna get an eighth year of eligibility.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
He didn't have that, but it seemed like he was
there forever. I think Blaine Bishop also played for the
team tonight, right, I'm trying to get other big names
in the You got Pope, you have Cardinal, we have Bishop.
Could we just bring back Damian Priest from w W
Power Forward right the night and they'll play MAXI Priest
get close to you. Yeah, that's good. H So, again,
(14:02):
this is gonna be an unprecedented year for college hoops.
The interest in the rebirth of the Evil Empire Cooper Flagg,
this is everything college basketball could possibly want. Exit out
about a Fresco exit swalling down The Jason Smith Show
with Mike Carmon live from the Tirack dot Com studios.
All right, so we wanted to bring you some of
that and coming up next the basketball fun and drama
(14:22):
didn't end with that, something I never thought we'd see.
We got tonight in the NBA. That's next right here,
Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike
Harmon live fromthatirack dot com studios.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Jimy, Jimmy, dem me, Tim.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Not often we get stuff that we've never seen before
in sports, and it's really not often we get stuff
from people that you don't expect it from. And we
talked about this the beginning of the show tonight. We
led tonight's show with what happened tonight between the Heat
and the Pistons. And I don't know the last time
(15:27):
the Pistons has ever led a show on sports talk
radio or on Tell, any of a of a talking
head shows. I don't know the last time the Pistons
have led a show, led a show, been the number
one story. Maybe not even when they got Kate Cunningham
in the draft three years ago. I don't even know
if they were the number one story of the draft
that night, But yet they were the number one story tonight.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Yeah, let's go back and look at the full breakdown
of that draft. Do we have any major trades that
precipitated it. The Olympics were going on. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
I mean it was odd, right, all that stuff. Yeah,
I don't know that, dude, I don't know, man, I
don't know that the Pistons have ever led a show
in the last fifteen years. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
No, I gotta think that's probably Cunningham getting drafted Number
one had to him though, But.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
Why because we wouldn't have done Olympic stuff to jump?
What if something crazy happen in the Olympics, we would
have done that. I would have done something Top died,
but we wouldn't have led to show with that. I
remember telling the story about that that night. I actually, yes,
the same night the last time when when kid Cunningham went,
Dusty Hill died. I'll tell you my Dusty Hill story. Uh,
(16:36):
you talk about hard times, I'll tell you my Dusty
Hill story before we get into the NBA. All right,
So the one it actually was an NBA story that
I met Dusty Hill on. So if this is back
in oh god, it's twenty five years ago. Now, this
is a long time ago. And I was in San Antonio.
This is back. But even before I was on air,
when I was producing for Channel seven here in LA
(16:57):
and we were and Bill Weir, who is now you
know the you know Stay was the sports anchor at KBC,
and so he and I were in San Antonio following
and traveling alongside the Lakers for the playoffs, and it
was it was a series where they lost to the
Spurs in four games and Kobe missed a couple of
(17:18):
free throws at the end of Game one that could
have won the game, and Duncan hit a couple of shots.
The Lakers just got xcized out of the playoffs and
then they won three championships the next three years. But
one of the things was we were looking for something
fun to do for sports that night. We were looking
for some who the stars were gonna be games. We
decided We're gonna do a fun thing where here's who
the stars are at Laker games. Let's see who the
(17:40):
stars are at San Antonio Spurs games. And like Sewn
Michaels was there, the wrestler, so we had a bit
with him, and Dusty Hill was there, but I didn't know,
none of us knew who it was. This is twenty
five years ago, and we go, hey, that's a dude
for his easy top, Like oh my god, and Bill'
say hey, let's let's do something him and I'm the
producer and he's the talent. And I go, I don't
(18:00):
know which gibbons brother he is. I have no idea,
I go, I said, Billy gibbons Is. I don't know,
but I'm gonna say, mister Gibbons right, I'm walking up.
I walk up to him and because he goes, I
don't know who it is, I said, listen, I'll go up.
I'll find out who is, and that lets you come
over and see if he wants to do a bit
with us. He goes, okay, great, go over to him
and I go, hey, mister Gibbons. I put my hand
and he goes Dusty Hill. I said, of course you
(18:21):
are all right. You enjoined the game, and he said yeah.
And he had no interest in me at all. Because
I said mister, he said Dusty Hill. So I was like,
all right, great, and I kind of stood there with
a smile on my face for like three seconds and
kind of did the Homer Simpson backing into the uh
heads and I was like, okay. And I walk up
to Bill and he could tell something's wrong. He looks
(18:42):
at he goes, what is it? And I said, I said,
how you doing, mister Gibbons. He goes, who which one
is he? And I said it's Dusty Hill. He goes,
oh wow, So he goes over right now he was.
He goes and waits five minutes O Dusty Bill weird
Channel seven, LA. Would you do a bit with us? Yeah? Sure, okay.
He has a great bit and he talks about every
girl being crazy for a sharp dressed man. I'm like, ah,
it was awesome. You know, he went on it was
(19:04):
a great thing for us, and I'm like, okay, and
I you know, I he took one for the team,
took for the team. But then I walk away from
that going I took one for the team. I did
my job, was what I was supposed to do as
a producer. And then I thought, man, I feel bad
for him, Like, you know, he's there, a big star
at a game and someone called him the name of
one of the other guys in the band. I gotta
imagine that that probably happened.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
On occasion, just not with the excitation that that you
put along with it.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
I actually you wanted your funny story a couple of
weeks ago. You know, I do a hit in Edmonton
once in a while with Jason Gregor. Our show is
huge in Canada, by the way, not not a lie,
And I mean it's big here, but it's also big
in Canada. We're so so I was, I was doing
a hit with with uh with and it was a
fill in host and they will you come on? I said, yeah, sure,
(19:52):
no problem. And it was two guys coming in I'm
pretty sure, pretty sure was Edmonton and one and one
of the guys says to me, yay, all right, I will.
We'll get your take on the Jets in a minute
swollen dome. And I said that that that's not me,
but you didn't know it isn't that. And I just did,
like under my breath, like that's that's not me. Okay, yeah,
(20:13):
well just to let you know. But I'll get sick
of the jutsman guy not not me, not me? Okay,
that's fine. No, well.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
But it was.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
I walked up Ben, I put my hand on Hey,
mister Gibbons, Dusty Hill, of course you are. Yes.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Now going back to the original thesis of is this
the first time we've led with the Pistons in the
last fifteen years? Okay, sure, I have found the story
that might have preempted it. Now, we would have done it.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
You and I. You have to find proof that we
started the show that night with Kate Cunningham, which I
can't believe we did now.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
But here here's the thing, right, so obviously we have
the draft on the twenty ninth, the Olympics are going the.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Story that might have trumped it.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Now, this would have been a two day story if
that were the case, all right, because we would have
it on the twenty eighth.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Okay, okay, okay, okay.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
That was when Simone Biles announced her that she was
stepping back. Oh we done so we dated the twenty eighth, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
because she tweeted at six forty eight yeah whatever time zone, Yeah,
that evening on the twenty eighth, So we would have
done that as part of our show on the twenty eight.
But then the twenty ninth, maybe the backlash and were
(21:26):
all in the conversation that might have led the show
before we got to Kate Cunningham draft. We might have
done Kate Gunningham for a minute, but that would have
might still would have had legs Day two, Hey, NBA
draft and night Pistons had the number one pick, but.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
Simone Biles, Yeah, No, I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
I'm with you, know what I mean, Like, that's the
one story I've found that night, Like otherwise you got.
I mean they announced PBS announced the end of Arthur.
That wouldn't have led this show.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
Uh, the Dudley Moore movie Nziman or the Russell Brand
reboot those years later with Helen Mirren. Uh. Now why
are we talking about the Pistons? Why are we talking
about Sir John Giluld take my hand? That would leave
you with one.
Speaker 5 (22:12):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
The reason we're talking about the Pistons because something happened
tonight that I would have never thought happened. Pistons in
the Heat are tied at one twenty one a piece
near the end of overtime. Actually it's one twenty one
to one nineteen. Heat lead the game with less than
two seconds left to go. So what can the Pistons do.
They got to inbound the ball near the they got
(22:35):
to get a shot off right away. They inbound Kate
Cunningham inbounds and Alley oop ties the game with a
second left to go. Wow. And then Eric Spolstra does
something that I still can't believe he did. Oh there's
a three to one twenty one, one tenth of the second.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
I had never seen an analytic who's the Pistons win
one twenty three to won twenty one in overtime and
what away to him the Greens.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
So that's the final call. What happened was with one
second left after the alley oop, Eric Spolstra was very mad.
He wasn't happy the final a few minutes of this game.
He was really pissed, and he called timeout. Problem is
that he didn't have any timeouts left, so it's a
(23:35):
technical foul, and with one second left, Pissons go to
the free throw line. They hit two free throws and
they win the game. Basically, with no time left, they
win the game. If you said to me, of all
the coaches in the NBA, who is the last guy
that I would say he's gonna call a timeout when
he doesn't have any Spolstra is the guy on that list.
(23:58):
Now it's a fair boyt Steve Kerr would call a
time out he doesn't have before Eric spolt First is
TIBs right, No, TIBs. Tims is not a big friend
with his timeouts as much as no even Doc Rivers
would call a time out before, maybe not much before,
but he would call a time he of course would
blame you, honest he he wanted me to call a
time out. That's y's that's my guy. He wanted me
(24:20):
to call it. I said, we don't have it. He said,
let's get a time out. So I go, sure, we.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
Don't have that in the arsenal and the history of
doc Rivers doing something similar.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
Today, we finally won a game tonight and asked me
about that. Instead, I didn't call it time out. Late
Spolster would be the last guy in the entire NBA
that I would say would call a time out he
doesn't have, And yet here we are, Eric Spolster calls
it time out he doesn't have with one second left. Yeah,
just an amazing sequence of events. I mean, Eric Spolster.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
Whenever we think of the Metal Stand outside of you know,
Coach Pop who hopefully you know, all's well with him
away from the Spurs right now, it's it's always been
about the the tactician, right, the smart use of your resources,
but also you know, your timeouts and being judicious with
(25:06):
those to set up end of game sequences and playing
chess instead of checkers and Spolster has certainly been that guy.
Once we got past the you know, origin story of
Lebron wanting him to be fired. Once we got past that,
they recognize that that Spolster is a pretty good coach. Yeah,
I would say he's probably, you know, the last guy
(25:28):
you would expect, right that he's that he's been smart
in final sequencing and then getting to the podium and
outlining it as best you could without the urse confrontation
of a Steve Kerr or a Greg Bobovich.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
Right. It's it's always surprising because you know that that's
the last thing they go over in the huddle at
all times. No timeouts left, don't call timeout, right, whatever,
the players go back out, that's always the last thing
that is said, no timeouts, no timeouts. You don't tell
me that, you know, tell me that it's always the
last thing. Jalen Rose, because when we talked about what
the Chris Webber time I am. I remember doing doing
(26:05):
some shows with Jalen Rose at ESPN, you know, about
fifteen years ago, and it was really fun because the
one show we did together, we were looking at them
it was like the anniversary of the timeout game, and
he said I've never seen the box score. What did
I shoot? And I said, ah, six out of eighteen.
He was, oh, man, I had a bad night shooting.
I had a bad night shooting. But he told me
some great stuff. He goes, listen, if he doesn't call timeout,
(26:26):
I'm open for a three. If he gets the ball back,
I'm standing there. Look give me the ball. I'm open
for a three. And I said to him, I said, okay,
so you got to tell me about about the timeout.
Did you guys not know? He goes, and he goes, dude,
that's all the coaches said going back on the floor.
No timeouts. We got no time that's all they said.
They said, dude, They said it like six times. We
got no timeouts. That's always the last thing they tell
(26:48):
you going on the court is there, we don't have
any timeout. If we don't have any timeouts, don't call one.
Don't call one. So you know they know that here
and you know, spill does you time out? He got
really mad, he was really emotional, and he called the
time out. They didn't have it, and they lost the
game again. Anybody but Spolstra, I I can say, yeah,
I could see. I mean, the guys at the end,
and I say, yeah, a little bit ahead of again,
(27:11):
Doc is close because even though you know Doc's not
a great coach, doesn't do that all the time. Uh,
and and and and the same thing with Steve Kerr.
But I'll tell you this this with with with Spolster.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Yeah, it's funny you say that because Jalen Rose was
in the crowd for this particular game tonight was caught
on camera going oh no, oh no, he doesn't have
a timeout. Really no, it's they're doing the liperating. The
referees say, coach, both call the time out and take
a file.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
They're out of timeout.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
Oh boy, yeah, so all of that no timeout, It
all comes back to Jalen Rose for it.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
Don't do it, don't know.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Yeah, just a terrible, terrible way for this to uh
come down in these opening night.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
The last guy I would expect.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
And it happens funny, you know, with extra consequence they
fall to h and one and a tournament. Oh yeah,
they got a real their odds to win the NBA
Cup all of a sudden, it just just went down, firals, Sure.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
How about odds to win the NBA Cup? First night
is here? The biggest game happening right now, Clay Thompson's
return to Golden State. We are nearing the final ninety
seconds and the Warriors have the one fifteen one fourteen
leave Klay Thompson just missed a three, so the Warriors
trying to hold on. How about for more on this
(28:30):
game and the rest of the night in sports, Let's
check in with Isaac Lowan Crown, who's got the latest
with what's trending?
Speaker 6 (28:35):
I Low, I didn't know you were friends with Jason Gregor.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
Oh you really? You know? Yeah? Oh, I go on
the show probably once a month. Oh.
Speaker 6 (28:43):
I used to go on a show back in the
day until I was apparently kicked to the curb in
favor of you.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
He told me said, hey, we had a guy. Now
I want the swollen dome. Wait, no, we had a guy. No,
it was the actually guy filling in for He said,
we had a guy we liked. His name was Isaac
Loewenbrow and but I don't know what happened, and then
saw why don't you come on instead?
Speaker 6 (29:05):
Speaking of what happened, Steph Curry has just hit a
dramatic three pointer to give Golden State a one eighteen
to one fourteen lead over Dallas with twenty six point
four seconds romantic in the fourth quarter on the opening
night of NBA Cup competition. In the return of Klay
Thompson to Golden State, Curry with a huge performance down
(29:29):
the stretch for the game. Now he has thirty five points,
five three pointers. He just made the good night gesture
as he walked triumphantly off the floor. He also has
six rebounds and nine assists. Thompson meanwhile twenty two points
sixty three pointers in thirty three minutes. Lukadanci's thirty one
to four Dallas, but again a dramatic three pointer moments
ago by Steph Curry has given Golden State a one
(29:51):
eighteen one fourteen lead over Dallas with twenty six seconds
left in the fourth As you guys were talking about
earlier Tuesday night, Pistons won over Miami in overtime. I'm
one twenty three to one twenty one with a second
left at ot score tied. Eric Spolster, the head coach
of the Heat, called a timeout with his team out
of timeouts that resulted in a technical found that led
to the game winning free throw by the Pistons.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Malik Beasley. Here was Spolster after the game.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
I just made up just a serious mental error, you
know there at the end.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
That's on me.
Speaker 4 (30:21):
I feel horrible about it. There's really no excuse for that.
I'm seventeen years in and we had talked about it
in the huddle. I knew that we didn't have anything.
I just got emotional and and reactive on that, and
I just made up just a horrendous mistake.
Speaker 6 (30:36):
Ironically, I once overheard my wife say the exact same
thing to my mother in law. Anyway, Atlanta, what at Boston?
What's seventeen to one? Sixteen on Yeka Okonku the game
winning put back with six seconds left. Nick's got a
triple double from Josh Hart in a one eleven ninety
nine win at Philadelphia College Oops nineteenth rank Kentucky knocked
off number six Zuke. Here's how the final second sounded
(30:57):
on wlap in court.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Canipples long one is no good, old guys rule, it
can't lay it up. Tucky seventy seven, Duke seventy.
Speaker 6 (31:10):
Two, Duke's Cooper flag twenty six points and twelve rebounds,
but two turnovers in the final twelve seconds.
Speaker 1 (31:16):

I'm ann asks Man, live from the Tireck dot Com Studios.
Game of the Night in the NBA. Just finished Cleveland, Dude,
Cleveland's got no problems. Man, They're twenty eight no right now? Nice?
Speaker 3 (32:31):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
The return of Clay Thompson to Golden State goes the
way of the Warriors. An incredible moment for him coming back.
You see the fans, how they lined the player's entrance
and and and where. It was like he was a politician.
He had all those employees, everybody around peril for him.
(32:53):
It was in the captain hat. Yeah, and the captain
hat yeah, looking like Danny Newton and Caddyshack. When he
put that on when he was hooking up with Lacy.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
All the people still standing. I mean, it was a
It was a really great moment for him. And playing
his first game back in Golden State with Dallas. Look,
it was really fun to see.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
It's fun to see they had the giveaway with the
with the captain's hat. You could tell he was emotional.
He misses his first two shots, he wasn't close. Bounces
back to score twenty two, but it is not enough
as that big one down the stretch. He missed a
big three that could have tied the game with a
little bit less than ninety seconds left, to go. Steph
(33:32):
Curry hits a big three for a one point lead,
and the Warriors win it one twenty to one. Seventeen,
Curry hits the big three to give him a four
point lead. Does the whole ninety nineteen thirty seven for Steph.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
As the Warriors improved to nine and two. Now, there
was a little bit of controversy, at least from my eyes.
With twenty one seconds left off, Klay Thompson assists Quentin
Grimes hits a twenty five foot three point shot, and
to my eye, Steph Curry gets in the way of
him being able to land. Now, I don't know if
they decided Grimes kicked out his legs enough to where
(34:06):
he was just trying to initiate contact and it wasn't
a natural shooting, you know, position that he was coming
down in. But he had to pull back because of
where Steph Curry's running through at that point. So should
it have been a four point play? Grimes goes down
to the court, looks to the official, teammates implore the
(34:28):
officials to give him the shot. Doesn't get it, ball
out to Golden State to where we get to our final.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
Well, Golden State gets the same kind of calls of
Kansasity chiefs. Oh, oh, they kind of do. But this game. Look, yes,
you can look at that and say, but that would
have made it a different game down the stretch. And
clearly there was a lot of there was a lot
of game to be played from that point on.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
But it's more just the Steph Curry would have been
getting in the guy's face, throwing his mouth piece, and
it would get that call.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
It would have been it would have been, oh, that's
a flame and we're throwing them out in stuff. You're
getting eight free throws. Okay, that's what we're gonna do
for you. But this was a big game for Klay
Thompson because, yes, does he want to come in and
win the personal revenge game. Yes, he wants to come
back to Golden State. He signed with Dallas. You know,
he's mad that that Golden State kind of pushed him out.
(35:18):
They knew they had to move on. It was the
right call, right, Klay Thompson is not the same guy.
He was not someone that was gonna start for them,
and he was a volume shooter and he was better
when he was coming off the bench. That's just how
he fit with Golden State. No, I want to go
someplace else I can start. Okay, So yeah, you want
to win from that point. But here's the bigger part
why you wanted to win this game. You've joined the
(35:41):
team that was in the NBA Finals last year, and
you have had a slow start to the season. Okay,
sometimes when teams go really far in the playoffs, the
season starts a little slow. All right, that's fine. We're
you know, we're five hundred so far this year. That's okay.
But the Warriors, the only big change they had was
you left left and Steve Kerr decided I'm gonna give
(36:02):
more minutes to all the young guys on the team,
And so far the Warriors have been really good. Clay.
They're better without you than they were with you last year.
Steve Kerr is playing seventeen guys in his rotation. He's
got Sean Livingston is still getting minutes on the Warriors
(36:24):
this year.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
I mean, one of the greatest careers unacknowledged and me.
But yes, to your point, yeah, they got a lot
of guys cycling in their play.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
I mean he's on like a twelve man rotation for
the Warriors and they're winning and it's less minutes for
the for Steph Curry and for Draymond Green. Look, however
long it lasts at lasts, but right now, if you're
Klay Thompson, you're going Man, maybe it was me because
these young guys are all getting time to play. Steve Kurry, Look,
(36:58):
we talked to Rick Buker about this last last week
and he said, Hey, I talked to Steve kerb before
the season and he said, we are making an absolute
dictum that these young guys are gonna play. We are
not going away from it. They're going to play, and
they're playing so far every game and they're contributing, and
the Warriors are already twice as good as they were
(37:18):
a year ago. What's the big change? Yeah, young guys
are playing, But no, Klay Thompson, that's how bad he
wanted and needed to win this game because he doesn't
want that narrative out there that, oh, hey, yeah, Warriors
were great, then they weren't great for a while, they
got rid of you, and all of a sudden they're
great again. I know it's a bit of an oversimplification,
but what's the big change? Klay Thompson's out his volume
(37:41):
shooting is out? What's in Moody and Healed Looney and Kamingo,
all these guys playing twenty twenty five minutes in the game,
and hey, no volume shooting. No Klay Thompson having to
take twenty five shots a game just because he's always
taken twenty five shots a game. Now he makes eight
instead of thirteen, which is what he used to. Yeah,
I get over simplification. But what's the big change, Clay
(38:02):
is out? Young guys in what's the big change in
the record? Nine and two so far near the top
of the west.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
Yeah, I would be curious to see, you know, the
quantification of Klay Thompson the defender as well, right, because
that was a hallmark of his early career of being
a really good individual defender, and that part had waned. Obviously,
mobility had waned because of the mounting injuries. So now
(38:29):
you look at the young legs that the Warriors are
relying on and look heavy, stressful minutes early, better for everybody,
get them battle tested or prove that they're not right
proof of concept, Because if you are in a position
whereby you think you're a contender, as you get closer
towards God, I'm already talking NBA trade deadline. Look what
I'm doing here that you can go and maybe move
(38:51):
some of the younger assets, take on and expiring contract
of a veteran thirsting for a chance to fight for
a ring, things.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
Of that nature.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
This is the way you do it, right, Play thirty
two minutes for Draymond, thirty five for Steph and then
you kind of work in from there, getting good minutes
from Melton with fourteen points in the starting lineup as well,
so depth of rotation, giving Steve Curse some.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
Options exit out about a Fresco exit, swalling down The
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harbon. Clay
Out wins in. That should be the headline in San
Francisco tomorrow. Clay Out wins in. Clay dried up read
wariars Win. I'm ready for an interview, canb are ready?
Coming up next, not one, but two big stories out
(39:39):
of football. This is Fox
