Give this you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Greetings, Welcome in side hour two The Jason Smith Show

the tire rack dot Com studios. Tyrack dot Com, I
hope you get there. An unmatched selection, fast, free shipping,
free road hazard protection, over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirack
dot Com is the way tire buying should be. At

(00:53):
a very emotional moment happening right now on the court
in Las Vegas, Many Oklahoma City play in tears on
the court. I'm looking at Isaiah Hartenstein, who is just
in disbelief. Doc Rivers is hugging everyone, tears in his eyes.
He grabs the E Cup trophy out of Adam Silver's hands.

(01:13):
He's saying, how this is a win for every buck
fan ever I Jannis is on the ground, He's got
all his teammates around him. It is an emotional moment
right now in Las Vegas. They're beaming highlights of this
game on the sphere. This is what you pay for
and what you expect when the E Cup final takes place.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Oh yeah, Pirate Steve just rolled out the treasure chest
and they're about to dole out the five hundred thousand
dollars bonuses.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Pirates Steve, Pirate Steve. Who's that you know, Steve? Yeah,
I don't know what you're talking about. Pirate Steve. Where's
a patch?

Speaker 4 (01:48):
Sure?

Speaker 1 (01:48):
No, not ringing about? No, no, no, Pirate Steve. Don't
know Parates Steve. Yes. The Milwaukee Bucks win the second
e Cup, beating the Thunder nine one in a game
that was televised nationally. It wasn't a great game. It
didn't see a lot of offense.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
But it was one for seventeen in the first half
from the three point r were the thunder.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
It was a game that was on TV that you
could have watched. That's the best way to Giannis has
a big night right triple double for sure, absolutely, But
this was a game that's the best way to describe it.
Like last night's game between the Falcons and Raiders, it
was a game on national TV that you could have
watched without having to worry about Do I get it?
Am I streaming? Do I none? Like tonight? Tonight was
a game you could have watched without having to worry

(02:37):
about streaming. That's the fascinations on a job done done
gildas Alexander and Williams combined to shoot sixteen for forty four.
I mean, gildess. Alexander looks inconsolable right now. He looks
absolutely no. He s ripped his seat in the corner,
lighting his jersey on fire. In the middle of the court.
Right now he has always taking a jackhammer to the

(02:57):
logo in the middle of the floor. This is insane.
The E Cup bringing the best and worst out of everyone.
How do I get some of that game used court?
Right now from the rubble. I'm just putting all this
game used to court in my pocket. I'm gonna sell
this a big old guyday.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Man, you can grab pockets full of Convetti after big
events and packaging properly and sell for thirty forty bucks
a pop. I mean they do it with game used
dirt for sure all the time, so why not some
pieces of the hardwood here? But what are you doing?
But we're taking up pieces and I've taken up a
piece of his court because I want it signed by
Darvin Ham.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Damn. It's the greatest Emirates Cup participant we've ever known,
best Emirates Cup champion, last year's Lakers, this year's Bucks
eight seven seven ninety nine. Fox, you know what, this
is really a dominant effort by the Bucks in this one,
but it was unexpected last year the Lakers that had
an unexpected run. You're the best player we've seen the

(03:56):
last twenty five years of Lebron James. This wow was
more dominant than this.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Here's the problem, though, it took him down at the
end of the season, they had nothing laughing.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
We put everything into that, Epe, We put everything into that.
I had nothing after that, I was done. Yeah, middle
of December, I was done. I was ready for the holidays.
And then you know, the following season, she was credit.
He didn't disappear last year. So is there a way
to make this game worth more stakes for the fans.
We have other big news out of the NBA as well,

(04:26):
We're gonna get to with Mark Stein, who's going to
join us in a little bit to talk about this.
But we mentioned a few minutes ago the loss that
the Lions had to the Bills continues to reverberate. The
Lions have suffered a lot of injuries, and you know, hey,
cambeling is the big danger. Hey, when your head coach

(04:48):
wants to make ridiculously risky decisions, guess what's going to
come back to bite you in the ass? Telling you
has anybody created the Wikipedia page for you or for
cambling or Urban Dictionary and cambling and DJ right now,
we are Christmas campbeling around the holiday and if.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
You all have and if we does get on an
urban dictionary with our primary definition, can't wait to see
what the subset becomes.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Telling you just wait. The Lions season is gonna end
with us talking about the Lions game on Monday saying
can you believe that Dan Campbell decision that screwed their season?
But if last night, in the last few days have
been about the avoiding cambling, I feel like but in
such positivity tonight, right yeah, doctor Rivers credit, I gave
the Yankees credit. This is in fact I'm gonna give

(05:30):
Dan Campbell.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Credit now, Okay, I hope so, because you are going
back to Detroit here.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Yeah, That's why I'm doing it. So no kiss a
lot of asks over the next week.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Otherwise you're gonna be banned from every white cast I
did not in every establishment that you would normally traverse
to during your time in Michigan.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
I do notice that on Sunday. On Sunday, I got
way less text from Pam's family about the Lions that
I normally do. On Sundays I usually got, but after
the sun is like ooh.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Man, okay, I got to turn my boy.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
And now after Montgomery getting hurt, like did we curse him?

Speaker 3 (06:03):
By God, Pam's gonna play that for your family around
the Christmas tree and be like, all right, is it
his fault?

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Does he get any of his gifts? Eight? It's gonna
be like that scene from Airplane when the when the
woman is hysterical and everybody is in line to try
to get her quiet, and like you know, they got
the the the lead pipe, and the and the gun,
and the and the and the baseball bat. They're all
gonna be lining up to come up to me like Okay,
so he said about the Lions. He said about the Lions,
but I gotta say good things about Dan Campbell here

(06:33):
the next minutes, because Campbell went on the radio earlier
today in Detroit, his normal appearance that he does, and
said some really big and good things about what the
loss meant to the Lions and how it felt, uh
losing this game and what they could do about it
going forward. Here's Dan Campbell.

Speaker 5 (06:53):
You know what happens is.

Speaker 6 (06:54):
You know, you win eleven in a row, you know,
and you lose and then a sky falls and I'm
talking to all of us and everything's good. Life's good,
you know, And but you forgot what it was like
when you had nothing in the age of molded bread.
Sometimes you got to get punched in the mouth and
remember what it used to be like to really appreciate
where you are. And we'll do that. We got a

(07:15):
bad taste in our mouth. We got kicked them around
the other day. We lost a few guys, and you
know what, it's exactly what we needed.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
So, oh, don't know that losing the guys was what
you need. You can get kicked around maybe, but well
that ninety seven won the ticket first of all, I
want to say this before we get into Dan Campbell.
As bad as things have been, and you know everybody's
ever I've never had a point where I was eating
moldy bread. I mean, I get the whole thing you're

(07:43):
eating file at and then you remember what moldy bread
tastes like. I've never eaten mold That sounds like a
like a like a dark ages or like a like
a fifteenth century thing. Oh, here's what we do. If
you're convicted of a crime, We're going to cut your
head off, but first you're gonna eat moldy bread for
six months as you're in the top of the tower
and your health is going to deteriorate.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Now, I can't speak to the reality of everybody else,
but certainly I've I've had circumstances where, you know, we've
had a loaf of bread where it's you can see
it's probably.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Maybe a day too long.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
But yeah, I had your heart set on that same
So maybe you cut a little piece off.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Oh is that did you know moldy ish? Did you
make toast?

Speaker 5 (08:20):
No?

Speaker 1 (08:20):
No, no, it's just that it's still mold is how
hard the redd is? That's what I'm saying like it's
right at that point, and maybe there's a little piece
that you have to cut off. Yeah Na, and okay,
you know for you know, the whole thing is that
Like I was when I heard that, I'm like, wow,
I'm blowing past the fact that he cursed on the radio,
you know, and the guy died. You know, he's not.
It's not like someone just shoved the phone in his hand.

(08:41):
He knows, and he curses twice on the radio. But
speak of our time here at Fox Sports Radio, you
and I, the conversations we have with friends of the show. Yeah,
been a number of excited utterances through the year. And
what he was saying any he was looking and this
is Dan Campbell at as look to finish with the
moldy bread before we get to Dan Champbell at its best.

(09:02):
I mean, it's just very you know, eating we're eating
fil a all right, that's great. I know what that
feels like. And the eating more like no, no, I can't.
Did you start thinking in your head, master of the house.
I started thinking, boy, my lowest like what did I
and I remember going, you know, in in like senior
year at Syracuse and then like right out of it
like you look, your early twenties is a really tough age.

(09:22):
And I remember going like, oh, I was excited to
go get Ramen noodles, Like I can get a cup
of Ramen noodles for a dollar nineteen and that's like dinner.
And I was like, okay, that's good. Like, I mean
that's where I was at with, Like, okay, if I
was eating fil a to eating Ramen noodles, right, like,
the one.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
Thing has not hit man. You could still get a
cheap ass thing of Ramen noodles. Now, you could go
high end and get your momo fukus and stuff and
you know, take it next level. Yeah, no, you could
do that, But I mean but you could certainly still
get your dollar nineteen cup of sodium.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Oh so you get to the sodiums. I think it
says actually extra sodium on the RS side. Oh look,
that's been crying a lot. It's like, nah, he ate dinner?
Am I Am? I doing one of those diets where
a lot of salt is good. Yeah, give me that.
But now that being said, I mean it's like Middle
Ages stuff. Hey give him the moldy bread in the
ale that comes from Campbell's. Yeah, uh. But the other

(10:18):
but the other part of it is is that I
agree with him, and this is what Dan Campbell does well.
Dan Campbell creates a culture. He is a culture guy.
His systems come and go and and and and that's
that's Sometimes it works when a coach comes in with
a great system, but normally there's a bit of a
there's a bit of disconnect between a coach running a
great system with the players that he has and then

(10:40):
trying to replicate it out of their team. But when
you can come in and create a culture and get
your players to want to play behind you, and you
get the best out of every one of your guys,
That's what Dan Campbell does the best. It's what he's
done with Jared Goff's what he's done with the running back.
So he's done everywhere. Everybody is so excited to play
for the guy, and he allows them the room for
them to succeed. He has created an amazing culture in

(11:03):
Detroit in a very short amount of time, and not
many guys can do that. You see all go how
many teams say all the Jets are got a big
culture problem. That culture problem, culture problem. What are the
great teams Jaca Lazer talks about us all the time. Oh,
that team has a violent culture and it works. That's
a great culture. That's a great guy. Dan Campbell is
a culture guy. He doesn't get enough credit for being
that kind of guy. Now, when it comes to the

(11:23):
x's and o's and make taking chances, that's where you
worry about campbelling. But this is him at his strength,
and I one hundred percent agree with him that this
is a good loss. There's not many losses that are
good losses. But watching the lines last few weeks, they
had gotten to the point where it's been all right, hey,
look we started out slow, but our offense is so good,
we'll catch up and win the game. And that's kind
of where they've been lulled into to get a bit

(11:44):
of a reality check like this, where we know we
can't fall down fourteen nothing to a good team because
if that happens in the playoffs, will be chasing them
the whole game. Because after the Bills got up fourteen nothing,
was a pretty even game, but it didn't matter because
the Bills had already won the game at that point
because had difficulty getting into the game. So, yes, that's
a really good loss for the Lions because now they

(12:05):
can go through win the last three games. You're talking
about some kind of home field advantage, like this was
a good loss. Not every loss is good, Not every
loss I can find a big positive about, but this
is one of those. Hey, we had won a lot
of games. We were getting sloppy, but it's hard and
we keep winning games. Now we've lost. Now we can
refocus and get back, and you're gonna see another Lions
team that is even more focused. They're gonna come out

(12:27):
of the gate snarling this weekend, and that's a really
good thing. Dan Campbell knows the right buttons to push
with his team.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Yeah, it's the curiosity of how much the atrician and
the loss of so many players on the defensive side.
Now Montgomery come back to haunt you. But certainly Jared
Goff put up points and they fought back into that
game and made it in one of the thrilling games
of this NFL season. In a season we've lamented a
lot of bad play, but certainly, going back to his

(12:55):
introductory press conference right where we were kind of chuckling
by the phraseology whatever, but it's like, if this works,
he's a mad genius because you talk about Tomlin and
you talk about what Belichick was whatever. It's like, here's
the expectations, right, and you either buy in or you don't.
If you don't, you're not gonna be here. We're gonna
figure out another way and another path, and coordinators can

(13:17):
come and go. And certainly for Detroit, you know when
you do the long look ahead of are they gonna
lose both their coordinators and what happens if when that happens.
We saw it with Philadelphia after their big run a
couple of years ago, and then you had the collapse
last season and now they're back on top. And part
of that is Barkley. Part of it is whatever ills

(13:38):
are there, they've been able to lock in a closet
well enough. But all of that to say, you've got
a team where manned the man they buy in. And
for Campbell, I think there is something to the old
approach of you need to get punched in the face
and awakened every once in a while. Right you're sleepwalking
and life's easy, and then it's a matter of how

(14:00):
you adjust. You know, not to steal the old Rocky
line or quote it all the way through but it's
the you know you're gonna have some pitfalls. I've known
plenty of folks who've gone through life where it's been
fairly charmed and then the first sign of adversity they run.
And here with Campbell, he's saying, that's not us, that's
not what we do here. The Montgomery loss is really

(14:21):
curious to me though, right, just in terms of how
you tried to orchestrate that offense of using him as
a bit of a sledgehammer early and late, and he
and Gibbs and what a tag team they've been, you know,
Sonic and Knuckles, as we've joked about quite a bit.
But it's that idea for Campbell in this appearance. And look,

(14:42):
the guy's consistent, right, He's gonna own when he makes
a mistake or when maybe even for people just perceive
he's made a mistake, but he's true to himself. You
don't have to like it, but you have to respect
it because that's where we're at with this Lion squad,
and certainly three games down the stretch that are winnable
to go back in with another streak heading into the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Yes, look at me a positivity The Yankees and Doc
Rivers and Dan look, Dan Campbell's a great head coach,
head coach, but trying to make sure your dad gives
you a decent Christmas gift, Yankee check, Okay good.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
And then you're you're really making sure that you are
not full metal jacketed when you're trying to sleep. When
you go back to Detroit, all of a sudden, it's
a taut cover and people are hitting you with so
remember it's just a dream, Jason.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
I felt so bad for him in that scene. That
was amazing. The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harman Live
from the tire Rack dot Com Studios, Joker coming up next,
NBA inside of Mark Stein stops Bible talk, the legacy
of the Bucks winning the second E Cup, and the
big story today that many NBA stars, including Kevin Durant

(15:56):
who said this is a terrible ideas Jason and Mike
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Here comes Metallica. It was not a saxophone, Jason, No,
it was not. It was not a sad sounded like
a saxophone, but then it was not. Well, the lyrics
are even better. Just give it a second. Okay, So
deep Fox Sports Radio, the Jason Smith Show with my
best friend Mike Harmon live from the Tirerack dot Com Studios,

(16:38):
and the NBA E Cup is in the books. Yeah,
Milwaukee Bucks take home the second E Cup. Darvin Ham
still says you cannot touch me during the E Cup.
You cannot touch my record. I am undefeated. Doc Rivers
so emotional. Okay, not really, but the Bucks win it
ninety seven eighty one. Boy, is there a way to

(17:00):
juice us up a little bit? We got controversy with
the NBA All Star Game format that was announced. Nobody
better to join us to break these down. Longtime NBA
insider Mark Stein You can follow them on Twitter at
the Steinline, that is, at the Steinline. Check them out
on substack as well. Mark. What's happening man?

Speaker 5 (17:16):
How are you guys? I'm good. You don't have cup fever?

Speaker 7 (17:21):
Well?

Speaker 1 (17:21):
I had cup fever then the Nicks got knocked out,
so you know that kind of affected me a little bit.
I had cup fever at halftime when it was a
one point game.

Speaker 5 (17:29):
Doesn't hosting a national radio show force you to take
your Knicks goggles off just for an hour or two? Everything?
Does everything have to be viewed through a Knicks prism.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
You asked me about the E Cup, and I told
you you asked the question, I answered it. You'd think so, Mark,
I would agree with you. However, uh so, look, the
E Cup is tonight. You know, we see the final
tonight in Vegas, and the NBA has continue to try
to make this a thing for the last couple of years.
Where are you on on where the E Cup sits
right now and it's present in future?

Speaker 5 (18:00):
Okay, I'm not in on the inside joke on why
you call it that, So you're gonna have to explain.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
It is the Emirates Cup. We just call it the
nickname like a cool thing, like it's the Eco like
the Emirates Cup, but it's the ecout.

Speaker 5 (18:11):
It's not cool, So you can scratch. So here's the
here's the thing. I guess it's been so long since
you guys have had me on. I guess I was
on the suspended list of the dog out in the
doghouse or something, So you guys haven't heard my rants,
But look, I am I am actually a Cup snob
because I've been going to Cup soccer games, mostly in

(18:34):
England for three decades. So I really want this to
be good. I want this to be great. I want
people to get excited about it. But look, I think
once we get to the knockout phase, it is pretty good.
I mean, there are certainly issues even in Vegas. You know, the.

Speaker 8 (18:51):
Crowds in Vegas were not exactly excited by watching teams
that you know, don't have Lakers on their journey, so
that is that is a smaller issue.

Speaker 5 (19:03):
But honestly, just my I hate the group stage the
way it is. I just it's the group stages are
sixty regular season games, scores that count twice. It's not
a tournament. That's why they have the different courts, and
you know, they're trying all these things to try to
make it look different because it's just it doesn't become

(19:25):
a tournament until we get to the quarters or even
the semis when the teams get to Vegas. So I'm
really glad they're trying it. I want to love it,
but there are a lot of issues with it to me,
and I think even things that I haven't looked at
as as an issue, which is, you know, playing the
semis and finals in Vegas. Adam Silver basically admitted tonight

(19:47):
that they're not married to that, that they might change
it and might even do the semis in teams home
buildings next season because they want better, They want more
passionate fans watching it. You know, Vegas is known as
this huge basketball town, but it just doesn't seem to
be resonating with the locals. This chance to watch NBA games,

(20:08):
But you know, the credit the seats are filled, but
it just isn't the wildest atmosphere that they were hoping for.
So look, man, I want a tournament. I like, I
really want knockout games. And the way I would do
it if it was me, I think.

Speaker 7 (20:23):
We should just go take the whole league to Vegas
for like seven to ten days and literally play it
out as a thirty two team knockout tournament.

Speaker 5 (20:35):
Give buy to the two teams that made the finals.
The other twenty eight teams have to play in the
first round. Let's put everybody's name in a hat and
let's just play knockout games. Because that's different. Its gotta
be different from the playoffs, and there's just to me,
there just isn't any variety in it. It's the same

(20:55):
thirty teams we watch all the time. There are no
you know, what makes the romance in soccer cups our
teams from lower divisions winning, you know, springing these upsets,
beating powerhouses. That's what replicates the NCAA tournament romance of
you know, a fifteen seed beating a two seed. We
have the same thirty teams, East and West are separated

(21:18):
until the championship game, just like in this last There's
just there's very little about this that is different. And
I would just love to see more knockout play stuff
that looks different than the playoffs that we already spend April,
May and June watching. And so that's what I'd like
to see. But you guys won't be surprised to know

(21:40):
that they're not really calling me from my input on.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
This, Well they should. That's a great I'd love to
see a knockout stage. You'll bring all the teams there
and play and have like an nca term where you
play one game and then you go home, win or
go home or go homestic.

Speaker 5 (21:54):
Like just and let's look in the dream scenario, and
I think in the league dream scenario was in the
dream scenario, we could at least let's bring two EuroLeague
teams in to just make just to have something different.
Let's bring Real Madrid and Barcelona here and throw them
into the draw and see how they do against an

(22:14):
NBA team. But look, that's that's a lot harder logistically
than I'm making it sound. So I just think, though,
if it would be great to see thirty, you know,
thirty NBA teams again, give two buys play out the
rest of the first round, and let's just you gotta win,
and you gotta win to advance. Let's do it completely different.

(22:37):
Let's mix up West and East. Let's do it totally
different than we do in the NBA playoffs. And whereas
the way we do it now, it's you know, again,
sixty group games in total that are just regular season
games that count twice. That's not a tournament. Like it's
it's not a tournament. And that's really my issue with it,

(23:00):
and I hope over time that is adress. But look,
you guys, see the other you know, you see what
you know. Over the last ten days, we've had so
many days where there were two games or fewer, right,
because just doing this causes so much havoc in the schedule.
The twenty two teams that don't advance to the knockout

(23:22):
round like they're they're all of a sudden getting like
almost an NFL by week kind of thing. It's just
it does cause a lot of havoc to do this,
and they're still learning and trying to figure it out.
But you know, it's a long way from what a
true Soccer Cup competition is, and that's what this is

(23:44):
supposed to be modeled after.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
He's Mark Stein with us here, Jason Smith Show with Me,
Mike Harmon here live from thedirec dot com Studios, NBA correspondent.
You follow him on Twitter at the Steinline. Read them
Mark Stein dot substack dot com.

Speaker 1 (23:59):
See what everything he's got.

Speaker 8 (24:00):
Going on there.

Speaker 3 (24:01):
He's a Hall of Famer, a long time insider. So
let's go to another thing of change. It'll be more
than I guess the caller of the court, and that's
the NBA All Star Game now where we go to
tournament's style there and the initial response from the players is,
I think, like most of us.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
Mark shrugging our shoulders going why.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
They're reaching their trying. They know the last couple All
Star games have been unwatchable. But look, and I'm really
trying not to go full grumpy old man, get off.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
My lawn mode tonight, I get you.

Speaker 5 (24:37):
And struggling to do so. I mean, I just the
All Star Game is unsavable at this point. And it's
just the NFL and the NHL have already realized it.
And look, it's just we're in a different time than
when we were kids. When we were kids, you know,
I'm a child of the seventies, in the eighties, you
know the All Star Game was you know, you didn't

(24:59):
get to watch. You didn't get to see these guys
like Rolando Blackman, who I ended up getting to know
really well in Dallas because that's where I've spent most
of my career working. But like I'm sure you guys
remember the famous NBA All Star Game moment when he
thinks the freeze he has to make the free throws
the force overtime, and he makes them, and you know,
he's screaming at the ball, like I didn't get to

(25:21):
see Rolando Blackman play that much. I'm living in southern California.
He's playing for the Dallas Mavericks with a great player
like that is not in my orbit in twenty twenty four.
These guys are in our lives all the time. We
you know, they're on social media, they're exploits on the court.
Every great highlight in the NBA, it zaps around the

(25:43):
world in second, Like the All Star Game can't wow
us anymore because these players, we you know, we see
them all the time. Every great thing they do, we
see it over and over and over again, and usually
within second on our phone. And it's just the reality
about the All Star Game is it's a convention for

(26:06):
the NBA. It's not the game is just it's part
of it, because obviously you're going to play it. But
people just want to make all the they want to
be selected as an All Star, they want to be
at All Star Weekend. But nobody's nobody's going to dial
it up and play in this game. It's just not
going to happen. And I don't know why we expect,

(26:29):
like All Star games have to be this super heights
competitive thing, you know, that's have they ever been? I mean,
it's there's very few moments that you can really rewind
over time and and talk about I mean, so it's
I just think expectations for the All Star Game are unrealistic.
When they happen. On Sunday night of NBA All Star Game,

(26:51):
everybody goes ballistic about how bad it is and what
a referendum on how disastrous that today's NBA is, and
then by Tuesday, everybody's forgotten it already. So I think
my advice would just be, can we just not get
so outraged about what the All Star Game looks like?
I mean, Kevin Durant instead this you know, this new
thing it you know, he's in his words, it sounds terrible.

(27:12):
I hate it. I'm there with it, like you know,
I just you know, they're trying, they know they're I mean,
they know what they've been doing is not working. But again,
it's just like, I just think we we expect way
too much out of an All Star Game in twenty
twenty four, and I don't I really don't think it's fixable.

(27:35):
I just don't.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
He's on Twitter at the steinline, that is, at the
steinline on substack as well, Mark Stein dot substack dot com.
Mark great stuff man, No grumpy old man. You had
some great ideas. I hope Adam Silver calls you. I
mean that would work out great.

Speaker 5 (27:50):
I don't know. I think I was pretty dowur, pretty grumpy.

Speaker 1 (27:54):
Someone needs the hard truth. Sometimes that's right, you know,
not you know, true truth isn't something that, hey me,
you need to hear, whether you want to hear it
or not. And sometimes that happens.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
It market catch up with you, guys. Nonetheless, next time
I will be stunnier.

Speaker 1 (28:06):
So you gotta man. Happy holidays. We'll talk to you soon,
all right, Good Mark Stott. Look, I get his point
beause he's a great point about the NBA All Star
Game and really all all star games. The Major League
Baseball All Star Game is the last of all the
all star games that people really care about, close to
what they used to and even then, right, I mean

(28:28):
close to what they used to. But for all the others,
now it's really it's stunt casting. It's okay, Hey, we're
in season eight of Friends. Let's give Rachel a baby,
Let's have Phoebe date Paul Rudd. Sorry spoiler, Uh, we
got to do some kind of stunt casting because everybody's
seeing these tricks. We need to keep people coming in,
so we can't go if we go back to East
versus West, people are gonna care about that. It's hey,

(28:49):
if we give, if we keep throwing new stuff out there,
maybe one year we'll hit on something that everybody loves.
So you're gonna continue to see this from the NBA,
from the NFL, everything else. We're gonna move into this
because that's what all Star games are now. It is
stunt casting. And that's that's the present, that's the immediate past,
and that's the immediate future. All my life's a flat
circle here.

Speaker 7 (29:10):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (29:10):
Taking Harry Chapin plus McConaughey, I'm mashed together.

Speaker 1 (29:14):
There is the idea, I get pirates Steve, and I
gotta treasure chest full of cash. You're just mixing everything
up right now. I decided to jam them all together,
and that's what we're doing. All of that made sense
in your head at the same time.

Speaker 3 (29:30):
I got all of the marriage right on board, except
they don't know the Harry Champin.

Speaker 1 (29:34):
They got Harry Chapin, I got Mary Chapin Carpenter. I
have pirate Steve.

Speaker 3 (29:39):
Yeah, sometimes you have a windshield. Sometimes you're the bug
that was a Nofler song. But but she made it
even more popular.

Speaker 1 (29:46):
Speaking of pirate Steve someone who comes in dressed like
a pirate every single night. But you don't know that
because it's radio. It's Steve de Sager with what's trending.
But I don't want to be a pirate.

Speaker 4 (29:58):
Puffy shirt for you, thank you very much. And and
you know, maybe a doll for that Fox Sports Radio.
I've seen shop. By the way, the puffy shirt doll
has been doll good.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
You can say you'll remember today is the day the
Oklahoma City Thunder almost won the Cup, almost.

Speaker 4 (30:15):
Won five hundred thousand dollars that went to Milwaukee in
the NBA Cup Final in Vegas, ninety seven to eighty
one over OKC. By the way, you mentioned Darvin ham seven,
oh Lakers coach in this tournament last year a champion
seven and zeros assistant for Milwaukee this year a champion.

Speaker 1 (30:36):
I would add Torrian Prince.

Speaker 4 (30:38):
Was on the Lakers last year and the Bucks this year,
so add him to the list. Undefeated in career Cup play.
Janni Santanakumpo a triple double including nineteen rebounds. No NBA
games tomorrow. Men's college basketball victories in the top ten
for Tennessee and Auburn for Duke as well. Seventh rank
Florida beat North Carolina in Charlotte ninety to eighty four

(31:00):
tar Heels from three point range five for twenty eight.
Number three Iowa State gave coach tj Otzolberger an extension
through twenty thirty two. In women's basketball on FS one,
number four yukon one on one sixty eight winners at
home against Iowa State. Ten NHL games tonight, including Pittsburgh's
comeback overtime win against LA three to two. Carolina shut

(31:21):
out the Islanders, four nothing victories for New Jersey and Chicago,
and currently Jets one. Sharks won the West Side Story game.
It is in the second period of that one. Kansas
City Chiefs quarterback.

Speaker 1 (31:33):
And wait, does Maria have a goal tonight for either
of these teams?

Speaker 4 (31:39):
DJ no boomer, All right, but we'll keep you updated
on that one.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
All right. Thanks. Wanted to make sure that one sings
very well, Okay.

Speaker 4 (31:48):
Very good by being an act with twel Carriods after this.

Speaker 1 (31:51):
You know, you know, there's pipes that someone has sing
and then there's the goalie between the pipes.

Speaker 4 (31:56):
You know, as they say in Winnipeg when you're a Jet. Yeah,
they sing that all the time. The Chiefs quarterback Patrick
Mahomes practice fully today despite his mild ankle spraying. Casey
plays this Saturday, then again on Christmas. The Falcons tonight
said Kirk Cousins will not remain as their starting quarterback.
Atlanta's going with first round QB Michael Pennix. Cousins is
starting a four year contract and has no trade clause.

(32:19):
Atlanta's game at Washington has been flexed into Sunday Night
Football December twenty ninth, instead of Dolphins, Browns three NFL
games on Saturday at twenty eighth. We know there are
two this Saturday opposite the college playoffs, but then on
the twenty eighth three Saturday NFL games. Those matchups were
named today. At the end of the month, it'll be

(32:40):
Chargers at New England on a Saturday morning West Coast time,
then Denver at Cincinnati, then Arizona at the Rams. By
the way, the Rams today activated tight end Tyler Higbee.
This Thursday, the Chargers will host Denver Broncos can clinch
a playoff birth Charger quarterback Justin Herbert limited in practice
again today with the bad ankle. And there is a
bowl game, the Frisco Bowl tonight, late third quarter Memphis

(33:02):
leads thirty five twenty three over West Virginia.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
Back to you, Thank you, Steve O. The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Carmon Live from the tirec dot Com Studios.
How about this coming up next? A football hot take
that I really want to know the odds on this
happening in Vegas. One of the biggest football stories the
last few days. I'm I got a hot take. I
really want to know the odds of this happening. Let's go.

(33:25):
That's next Jason and Mike Fox.

of the wall? Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show
with My best friend Mike Harmon, Live Fromtirack dot Com Studios.
Thanks to Mark Stein for stopping by. Great stuff on
the NBA E Cup of the Emirates Cup, memor Scott

(34:00):
Rahemeritz cut and the All Star Game and look just
what the future of it could be? But I promised
The hot take that I really want the odds for
in Vegas right now was last night that Bill Belichick
did the Let's Go podcast with Jim Gray. Yeah, we
did last week, and he was asked about his contract,

(34:23):
and obviously we found out the new ramifications or the
new quarks in his contract are, Hey, Bill, you have
only a million dollar out if you are out by
the end of next May or before the season begins.
Why do we need just a million dollar out then?

(34:44):
But then in the years two, year three, or four,
the out is a ten million dollar Penalley's got a bay. Uh,
So obviously he's got the just the million dollar buyout.
If the NFL calls him, which tells me you and
tells everybody we told you. If the NFL call Bill
Belichick would go. He would leave North Carolina high and dry.

(35:04):
It's why he called the Jets. He got so desperate
to stay in the NFL. He called the Jets. He
hates Woody Johnson. I got to see the luds no,
and I I gotta see that. No, he didn't.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
He didn't.

Speaker 1 (35:17):
He didn't deny it. He would have said no, because
that's an embarrassing thing. From much he hates the Jets,
but he called the Jets, hey, would you hire me? Okay,
this this tells you how bad he wants to stay
in the NFL. Can't stand the Jets, can't stand what
he I really want to get back in. Guys, the
Jets told him to beat it. Uh. I'm telling you,
and I've told you from the beginning. If the NFL

(35:39):
called Bill Belichick will leave North Carolina high and dry.
And when Jim Gray asked him about that, he said,
I don't talk about my contract. Wait what, I don't
talk about my contract. I don't talk about it. Okay.
So he's asked point blank about Hey, this thing NFL. No,
I don't talk about my contract. So you know that
by saying that's all. But I still plan on being
at North Carolina for a while. It's a load of crap.

(36:01):
He's at North Carolina because the NFL didn't want him.
And what he's done is leave the door open where
if teams in the NFL don't get the coaches they want,
if they go through the process and they don't like
the choices. Because I'm sure a lot of teams said Bill,
we don't know what we're doing yet. Because he's not
the sought after guy. You could have had him last year.

(36:21):
Maybe he's a candidate, but they want to look at
other people before they go and say, let's hire a
seventy two year old guy that may have lost his
fastball as great a coach as he was. So he's
holding it open out there that Okay, maybe they get
through the first round of interviewing and and they eventually
come to me. So that's why the biots there for
a million dollars. He still won't talk about it. So
let me go here, let me go here with this

(36:42):
hot take.

Speaker 3 (36:43):
You put in a freedom of information request for that details.

Speaker 1 (36:48):
I want to know what kind of odds do you
think there are that Bill Belichick never coaches a game
at North Carolina, never coaches a game. What kind of
odds could I get? Because right now that's where I
can say, Hey, if I was a gambling guy, and
I'm like I would, I would go to Vegas. Put
one hundred bucks on that. He never coaches a game

(37:10):
at North Carolina, doesn't coach again one game. He just
signed a five a three year contractor great coach three
year guarantee, Yeah, four and five. He never coaches a
game you think it's twenty probability. So you think the odds?

Speaker 5 (37:32):
What what?

Speaker 1 (37:32):
What?

Speaker 5 (37:32):
What?

Speaker 1 (37:32):
What kind of ods would I would? I get great
odds on that. Never coaches a game. I'm writing our game,
never coaches a game. Because I'll tell you what man
I want to hear and I have not heard, because
this is going to tell you how invested Bill Belichick
is in North Carolina. This is the nil and transfer
portal season. Now, this is when kids are in the

(37:53):
portal leaving and kids are coming, and you hear headlines
every day. Every every college football fan is checking every
day who are we talking to? I'm checking every day
who is heyrec who's going to bring in us their
next quarterback?

Speaker 2 (38:06):
Right?

Speaker 1 (38:06):
We had a couple of kids coming visits this week.
Who are replace if we can't get Kyle McCord another year,
who are replacing with they sign a couple of kids today?
Everybody is checking every transfer portal because now it's free
agency in college football. Belichick has the job. Have you
heard one story yet of hey, we're gonna get we
want to get this kid into North Carolina, this kid
wants to come, this kid's gonna leave. Anything about Belichick's

(38:28):
staff has he started the job yet? Is he even there?
Because now is when coaches are trying to go out
and get and and phil holes and make sure their
team is ready to compete next year. And I have
not heard any of that from Bill Belichick. Like, if
you don't hear stories about Belichick coaching and doing stuff,
that likelihood that he doesn't coach a game that goes
way up for me.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
Wait, but don't you think he could be lurking in
the shadows while in hiding in playing sight on the
set of an NFL preview show.

Speaker 1 (38:55):
It's not how it works in college football.

Speaker 3 (38:56):
You get what I got going on behind the scenes,
going at all. It's all coded language to my would
be prospects.

Speaker 1 (39:05):
I'm working really hard right now. You just don't see
it because I have people doing my work for me. Yeah,
isn't that what he's supposed to be doing? Anyway, not
heard one word about what's going on, what he's doing?
Is he are players coming? Are they leaving? Who is
he talking to? What great recruits are coming? Not one?

Speaker 5 (39:21):
Not one.

Speaker 3 (39:22):
Now I'm busting up the transfer portal tracker here. Let's see,
after entering the portal, four guys remain two, four, six, eight,
nine guys left and then two guys have come in.
One guy from Holy Cross, a guy from Delaware.

Speaker 1 (39:37):
That does that does sound like Belichick moves, though we're
gonna get people from really small schools. Maybe Belichick's on
the portal?

Speaker 3 (39:41):
Check is an offensive lineman named Cristo? Is Belichick's name
in the portal?

Speaker 1 (39:45):
The NFL portal? Not there?

Speaker 2 (39:48):
What more in the.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
Story, Another big story out of the NFL. Straight Ahead.
