Sports Radio. So we're gonna head to Vegas coming up
in about twenty minutes. Take a look at the big
CFP playoff game tomorrow night, Big action this weekend where
the money is headed going into Big Week sixteen of
the NFL. But we watch the Chargers beat the Broncos
tonight thirty four to twenty seven. Now, the big headline

(01:45):
from this game is something that we haven't seen in
the NFL since nineteen seventy six. This is not and
it's a big moment of the game. And sometimes some
stuff is just cool, and that's what this is. Now
the end of the first half, we'll get to Sean
Payton butchering the timeout situation.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
At the end of the.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
First half, the Broncos punt the football to the Chargers,
who make a fair catch. Now, when you fair catch
on the final play, you are allowed a free kick
from wherever you make the fair catch from.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
And you've seen this, this.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Rule gets trotted out from time to time you say,
you know, if you make a fair catch, you get
a free kick from that spot, which means you can
kick a field goal.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
And there's no rush by the other team. You are
allowed to.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Just make a clean run at it with the defense
not allowed to rush the rush the ball. And it's
mentioned once in a while, and we see it once
in a great while. The last one tried in the
NFL was five years ago by Joey Sli who didn't
make it. But for the first time since nineteen seventy six,
we had a fair catch free kick thanks to Cameron Dicker,

(02:56):
and it sounded like this.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
This is a fifty seven yard field goal attempt. Because
of the fair catch, it's a free kick. So Dicker
for three man, this kick is up and it is.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Good, a.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Free kick field goal camp Dicker from fifty seven yards.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
There.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
It is Matt Muney Smith on the Chargers Radio network
with the call, first time and the first time it's
been made. The previous long was fifty two yards by
Paul Horning in nineteen sixty.

Speaker 5 (03:34):
But hear me out here, right, we have the opportunity
that comes up with this try, and in this day
and age, when you've got Dicker. I mean, look, I'm
surprised it wasn't a Belichick thing at some point with
Gotzkowski because he was super tow for a while or
Sebastian Janikowski, although usually their defense gave up enough yardage
to where he really would have had his super Tow

(03:55):
that thing along to make that work. But you know,
to have the opportunit tunity. And we've seen field goal
kickers right now. I mean, we watch Aubrey, right we
watched some of these guys that come out. It's like, oh,
in pregame he was hitting from seventy Okay, yeah, maybe
we'll see more of these.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Well, I mean, look, it's it's great because with no
defense there, obviously there's the pressure of not having to
execute snap go, so there's the timing of it, but
there's also you can kick it as low as you
need to. You know, you can kick it as low
as you need to to get there because they can't
really block.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
They can't block.

Speaker 5 (04:30):
No, that's right, you got the ten yards that has
to separate you by rule. Let's also not forget that
we had Smith with the fair catch interference that really
host them and gave them the extra fifteen.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Because that gets you the X fifteen to one untimed
down and you get this. And it was weird because
it's almost looked like the teams were set up for
a kickoff, except it's being held in the middle of
the field, because you know, the Broncos had all their
their people like ten yards away. And the first free
kick since Ray Wershing did it your oh yeah, forty
nine Ers.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
No, he did it for the Chargers in seventy six
against the Bills.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
That's the last time a free kick field goal was
executed in the NFL.

Speaker 6 (05:10):
I do I do dig that you got?

Speaker 5 (05:11):
No?

Speaker 6 (05:11):
No, no, you remember with the forty nine Ers.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
Yeah, yes, because it's you, me and about six other
people that remember our mid seventies tops Ray Wersing cards.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I'm looking at the I'm looking at the box score
of the game. Like somebody found it and took a
picture of it and put it put it up on
social media, and apparently it was the Chargers beat the
Bills thirty four to thirteen. And the way that the
box score was put up, it was just the lineups
and then the and then the box There was no

(05:43):
there was no like it's so weird. It's not you
think of an NFL box score. This is what it
was like from nineteen seventy six. It was the start
for each side. Picture this, the starting lineup of the
offense and the defense for the visiting team. Then the
starting lineup for the offensive defense of the home team.
Then substitution, so the substitute who were going to likely
come in and play. And then there was did not

(06:03):
play rights an NBA game, there's.

Speaker 6 (06:06):
The d coaches decision who didn't play.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Then there was just a list of what field goals
were made.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
I mean, for some reason right under his Ray Worshing
making field goals including the free kick, and then whoever
made a field goal for the Bills. And then it's
just the box score of it just says touchdown Woods,
you know, touchdown Joiner, touchdown Holland, field goal, Worshing, free
kick Worshing forty five yards t D.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Young.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
That's the box score of the game, and then the
attendance and the tickets sold. Like that was what the
box score of an NFL game looked like in nineteen
seventy six.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
Keep it simple, keep it moving along. What was the
final score? Didn't they cover the number. That's all anybody
cared about.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Hey, I don't know, man, how do you keep track
of fantasy? I don't understand.

Speaker 6 (06:49):
Gotta wait for the USA today.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
I don't know, man.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
I'm trying to do the stats by hand and I
can't do it. All it's telling me is who started
and who kicked field goals and scored touched us?

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Insane?

Speaker 5 (07:00):
Man?

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Well the final score in your fantasy game? Oh I killed?
It was like thirty two to twenty. I killed. It
was I.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
Just yards in reception? Do not matter? Did you score?

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Like?

Speaker 1 (07:13):
I think all you got if this is your box score, like,
I think all you got was who scored the touchdown?

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Right?

Speaker 1 (07:18):
So I don't think you got the touchdown if it
was thrown, you didn't get unless the quarterback ranted it.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
It was who scored the touchdown and who kicked the
field goal.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
See now, I want to go back in because I've
got a little vault of some newspapers acquired through the
year's paper historic events. I gotta go look at the
old box scores Baseball an NFL to go see what else.
I want to what else I can find there.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
I want to see the store who started at all
the positions for the team.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Who were the substitutes who came into play.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
I got forty eight pages of analysis of the latest
Bears loss and for the rest of the NFL twenty
seven to three.

Speaker 6 (07:54):
Oh well, actually happened in a game? Don't know?

Speaker 1 (07:57):
Yeah, but look, but I gotta be honest, because, like
I said, this play comes up from time to time.
You see you see, hey, if you do this last play,
they have to punt it. They have no choice, and
they're gonna get the ball here. And I don't know
why you wouldn't try one from seventy seventy five yards, Like,
I don't know how like Janekowski never, That's what I mean.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Get this.

Speaker 6 (08:17):
Leskowski would have been the two candidates.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Like I don't when I say we show I can't
believe we haven't seen more of this because I really too.
I really can't believe you I haven't seen more. I
can't believe like once every five years, four or five years,
we haven't had a free kickfield goal.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
We have had five attempts before tonight since the year
nineteen eighty nine, going all the way back to Mike
Koefer in nineteen eighty nine and sixty yarders missed.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
That was he was good on Techbobil. He was the
first tech Mobile.

Speaker 5 (08:46):
So that was in a playoff game. The great Rob
Baronis in mid October of two thousand and five missed
a fifty eight yarder as time expired in the second quarter.

Speaker 6 (08:55):
Neil Rackers.

Speaker 5 (08:57):
See, now we're going into kicker history from sixty eight Cardinals.
And then Mason Crosby tried one against the Lions from
sixty nine and it has notes, ball was on target,
it fell just short of the crossbokt. And then the
last one you mentioned Joey Sly earlier. The last one
before him was Phil Dawson, one of my heroes. Oh wow, yeah,

(09:20):
seventy one yard attempt as a member of the Niners.

Speaker 6 (09:23):
Seems like the Niners like this play.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Yeah, well look the Niners and the Chargers apparently.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
And yeah, so now another forty six years will go by,
we'll get another think about this. That might be Mike
Harmon the last free kick field goal you and I
will ever see in our lives.

Speaker 6 (09:38):
How about that?

Speaker 5 (09:39):
And you're like in the note that they did include
the fifteen yard penalty for catching. Yeah, yeah, well yeah,
by the way, point, it's this guy's stupidity.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
What was the reason you have that? Because this guy
was stupid?

Speaker 5 (09:55):
And then everybody's standing around looking at each other. They
call it time out. I still don't know what the
hell's going on. And then try it now? Then do
you finally hear Matt money Smith and Daniel Jeremiah cackling
like mad men as Dicker walks up and hits that
fifty seven yard see and look.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
And this is why a bigger point here, This is
why Harbaugh is so much fun because he's a guy
that does stuff like this. Right, you add the kick now,
we just talked about that. The final play of the game.
I loved because it was just something you would draw
up in the street. Right, the Chargers have the ball
with a touchdown lead, and they're facing fourth down, and

(10:32):
there's four seconds left in the game. Now the Chargers
don't want to punt. I mean, if you're Jim Harbor,
you kind of remember what happens when you have to
punt in the final play of the game and it
doesn't go right for you. Uh So he doesn't want
to punt, So what is he? And and and you know,
I've always wanted to say like, you know, it's something
that you know, I have to just take the snap,
run around, and then throw the ball as far as
you can downfield and go right. By the time the

(10:56):
ball hits the ground, the game is over right, Like,
I don't understand why teams don't do that. What did
the Chargers doing the final play, Herbert took the snap,
he ran around in the backfield for about a second
or so, and the clock ticked really slow. Oh, by
the way, the clock was really slow to start on this.
But and then when the Bruce say it was a
Denver home game, how dare you? And then when the

(11:16):
Broncos like they were rushing him, he just threw it
as high and as far as he could, and it
landed in a perfect spot, like ten yards out of bounds.
So you know, you can't blow the whistle right away
all the balls out of bounds. He threw it as
high and as far as he could, and it just
like it was like a punt, and it just fell
down out of bounds. There was one Charger receiver running
downfield was getting held the entire time, just to make

(11:38):
it look legitimate, so it's not a penalty. And that's
how the game ended. I was like, I love that.
That's how you would end games in the street. That's
n end games in the schoolyard. And this is part
of what makes Jim Harbaugh so fun, is that stuff
like this he does. Yes, I get where his act
sometimes can grade on you a little bit. And the
whole is he being sincere with how energetic he is

(11:58):
all the time about stuff. I mean even I need
coffee once in a while. But like, but this is
what makes him fun because stuff like this is like, yeah,
let's do it. Yeah, this is this is high percentage
when you think about it. Yeah, let's go do it.
And those two those might be my two favorite plays
of the season in the NFL right there, the free
kick field goal and the way Herbert threw it out
of bounds at the end.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Of the game.

Speaker 6 (12:18):
No, it's great stuff all around.

Speaker 5 (12:20):
And we'd be remiss as much as we off and
cite the fact that the Jets killed Carl, we would
be remiss if we didn't bring up the fact that
Larry David was the special guest on the field last week.
It was Judge Judy. Sunday was Judge Judy. She failed
she failed them. Yeah, today it was Larry David. I can't,
I mean enthusiasm.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Timothy Shallomy didn't show up and make picks.

Speaker 5 (12:44):
No, he's on the press tour. I think he's overseas.
For yeah, I think he's in London.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
He's overseas.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
And I'm still giving you hot takes about the college
football playoffs.

Speaker 5 (12:53):
Well, and now he's got the final press run before
the release of you know Our Bob Dylan no biopick.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
I'll tell you man, Harball's fun. I mean, those those
my two favorite plays of the year, something you're not
gonna see again the rest of your life. And just
the end of the game where just throw it up
really far, make sure you throw it out of bounds,
but don't throw it too far out of bounds, bawl
the whistle on us.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
So just just do that, okay? Like? Is that? Like?

Speaker 1 (13:19):
I could see Herbert throwing the ball and turning to
Harball going, is that good?

Speaker 4 (13:22):
Like?

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Good? Coach? Did I do it right? Is that what
you want? You know what? You know what eded I want?

Speaker 5 (13:26):
Though, I want the Horball reaction as Gus Edwards ripped
off that forty three yard run right because we had
been talking about it live as the game was going
on here Fox Sports Radio, as we do every Monday,
Thursday night and any big game that's going on, and
it's like, Wow, they're running the ball, but he's you know,
it's just running into a wall, nothing going. And then stubbornness, consistency,

(13:52):
whatever you want to call it, Edwards busts off that
run and you can almost see Harball firing everything to
the ground and screaming and raising his arms like he's
Johnny Drama going victory.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
He's just fun, man, He's just fun. It is outstanding.
So yeah, absolute history. Again.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
It's weird because you think about your mortality. We're never
gonna see that again, and I we'll see it next week.
Now what two teams will do it next week?

Speaker 5 (14:18):
Now it's been broached again with the way we go
through the fifty plus yard field goal attempts nowadays, maybe
this this comes into play.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
Coming up next, we head to Vegas for all the
latest on the upcoming college football playoff games and a
big week sixteen in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (14:37):

When we get ready to head to Las Vegas.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
The Chargers win Game one of Week sixteen in the
NFL lay the Points come from behind to beat the
Broncos thirty four to twenty seven. Now we get said
for a weekend filled with the first expanded college football
playoff games the rest of Week sixteen, joining us now
on the hotline, nobody better then Las Vegas. Inside a

(16:32):
former odds maker at Caesars. Check out the Bet the
Board podcast. See them on CBS as well. It is
Todd Ferman. Todd, what's happening, Bud?

Speaker 7 (16:41):
Not a whole heck of a lot, gentlemen, Just trying
to digest what we saw unfolded so far. And I
know a lot of people that are Broncos fans still
optimistic about the road that sits in front of them,
but it just got a heck of a lot more
difficult with that second half, and kudos to the Chargers
for showing the ability to battle back after they laid
an egg in the second half last week against the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Speaker 6 (17:01):
Well most of the first this one, Todd.

Speaker 7 (17:04):
Oh, I mean it looked like a carryover, and for
all intents and purposes, if it wasn't for the first
free kick we've seen converted in fifty plus years, who
knows if that was the ultimate spark to get the
Chargers over the hump, because they look pretty lifeless and
lethargic when it came to stopping the run, and Denver
was able to do what they wanted when they wanted
through the first thirty and it was almost like a
flip switch. In the second half, Chargers defense came to life,

(17:26):
and whatever Justin Herbert took at halftime made that ankle
look a heck of a lot better.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
Hey, and I had a betting slip from a few
years ago where I bet by twenty twenty five we
would see a free kick field goal in the NFL.
It's a lot of money that's due to me, Todd.
So do I just send it to you and you'll
send me the money?

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Or what I mean?

Speaker 7 (17:43):
It might have been the de factor. She might have
actually had to lay a short price like the METSA
in the World Series. So it was a question that
is going to happen first, and clearly the answer is
now free kick.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
I will look, we'll get to the rest of the
NFL coming up in a few minutes, but obviously now, hey,
our attention to turns to what we're going to see
the next couple of days in college football, the first
playoff game tomorrow, Indiana and Notre Dame. Mike and I
talked about it earlier. I'd love to be able to
pick Indiana. It would be awesome, but I think Notre
Dame is just on a different level, and we're still

(18:15):
not really sure how Indiana is.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
How do you see this game tomorrow?

Speaker 7 (18:18):
You know, I think it's a great question, because both
of these teams have questions that need to be answered.
You go through each of their respective resumes, and I'm
sure Indiana went through the riggers of a Big Ten schedule,
but struggled mightily against the two best defenses that they faced.
The second half against Michigan wasn't exactly a Picasso by
any stretch, nor was Indiana's performance on the road in
Columbus where Curtis Rourke finished that game eight of eighteen,

(18:39):
and they were unable to really get anything going offensively.
But on the flip side, I mean Notre Dame. It
clearly took advantage of inferior foes down the stretch. But
you do wonder if they were the beneficiary of a
relatively soft schedule, because going back and looking at who
they've played over the last two months, the only living,
breathing offense that I would call an upper echelon attack
would be USC And if it wasn't for a couple

(18:59):
of picks is late in that game, that game is
significantly more competitive. So should be a hell of an
atmosphere tomorrow night in South Bend. Two programs separated by
about two hundred miles and programs that haven't played on
the football field since nineteen ninety one. So no love
lost in the intrastate showdown that we're going to see
between the Hoosiers and Irish.

Speaker 6 (19:16):
Now are you ready and prepared because you're going to
that one right.

Speaker 7 (19:20):
I will be in attendance in South Bend for tomorrow
night's game, and I will be in Columbus on Saturday
night for the Buckeyes and the balls. I am prepared
as I can be. I had to spend a pretty
penny to make sure I had winter gear, as you
guys know as coasters at this point in your life,
when the mercury dips below sixty, I mean that's pretty
much boots, wool socks, and winter hat weather. Not quite

(19:41):
sure if I'll be able to feel my extremities at kickoff,
let alone deep into the fourth quarter in these cold
Midwestern atmosphere.

Speaker 6 (19:47):
But at least got to double up.

Speaker 5 (19:48):
It's not a one and done purchase, so it was
easy to justify maybe a better, better product.

Speaker 7 (19:55):
The silver lining is that if I screw things up
the first time around, I'll least have about twenty four
hours to make amends and stop at a variety of
outdoor shops and make sure that I can have all
the Camo gear that I'm able to pick up somewhere
in Rurland.

Speaker 5 (20:07):
Here you go, don't buy a nice supply of hand
in footwarmers, and you'll be good to go, all right,
buck guys, seven and a half point favorites here forty
seven the total Are you prepared for the potential of
chaos if the Buckeyes fall and everybody's calling for Ryan dashead.

Speaker 7 (20:23):
Look, there's a lot of pressure on Ohio State. There's
no way to kind of sugarcoat it. A disappointing performance
in the regular season finale is nearly a three touchdown
favorite against a Michigan offense that really hadn't shown much
of a punch, and quite frankly didn't show much of
a punch in Columbus was able to gut out a win.
So you do wonder if this is a bi loo
opportunity for a Buckey's team that made plenty of mistakes
in that atmosphere, electing to be a little bit more

(20:44):
conservative offensively than we've grown accustomed to. Chip Kelly more
or less taking ownership, and I think when you look
at Ohio State's strength, it's at the wide receiver position
where they should be able to exploit, in my opinion,
a defensive backfield that hasn't really been tested for the volunteers.
And on the other side of things, can they generate
enough pressure make life uncomfortable for a young quarterback and

(21:05):
unfamiliar surroundings. I mean, it's rare that you get an
SEC team traveling the big ten country let alone in
the month of December. This will be the first ever
home game for the Buckeyes during the month of December
in Ohio Stadium, so it should be an electric atmosphere.
But it's imperative for the Bucks to get off to
a quick start because it wouldn't shock me at all
if the fans decided to turn on their team. If
they look to be lethargic without an offensive identity in

(21:26):
the first fifteen minutes.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
First fifteen minutes, if they don't like the way they
run on the field, they're gonna boom.

Speaker 7 (21:32):
I mean, it is a distinct possibility. If they choose
the wrong uniform combination, I'm sure the Scarlet and Gray
faithful will be irate before the game even kicks off.
So that is a point well made on your behalfsmith.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smithson with Mike Carmon live
from thetiraq dot Com studios.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
All right, as we get to the.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
Games on Sunday, a couple of really big rivalry games
to break down. First one, we got the Steelers in
the Ravens and look, this is going to be a
game if Lamar Jackson's going to exercise his demons. It's
going to be in this game. You talk about it
and the Bet the Board podcast.

Speaker 3 (22:07):
What do you like from this one?

Speaker 7 (22:09):
Yeah, some real problems for Lamar in a limited history
against the Pittsburgh Steelers. You look at his performance earlier
this year, a game the Steelers didn't score a single touchdown,
but we're able to win eighteen sixteen. Got the Ravens
to me throw an incomplete pass with about a minute
to go in that game on a two point conversion,
And you dig into some of the numbers for Lamar,
his worst completion percentage in a game this season, yards

(22:30):
per attempt, and a lot of the underlying metrics. Unfortunately
for the Steelers, it doesn't appear they're going to have
the services of George Pickens yet again this week, and
without him on the field, it really changes what they
can do offensively. And as we all know, the way
to attack this Ravens defenses over the top of the
vertical passing game. So I wonder where the Steelers go
for offense. Defensively, I think they'll be fine. And when
you dig into the history between these familiar foes, under

(22:53):
has been the order of the day. Eight straight games
playing under the total. And the other interesting nugget here
is that the Ravens have really struggled in home games
against division I know it's a limited sample size, but
just one and six against the number and AFC North
underdogs within the division have performed at a phenomenal rate
over the last couple of seasons.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
Todd Ferman our guest You Bet the Board podcast where
you find all the goodness to make you smarter at
the window and all those wonderful bar bets are maybe
just sitting around with your family this holiday season at
Todd Ferman where you find him on Twitter.

Speaker 6 (23:21):
Todd, let me.

Speaker 5 (23:21):
Circle to another game with AFC implications. Houston Kansas City.
So Patrick Mahomes is worth six points, we find out
because of his health. Right, So Houston early two and
a half and now it's three and a half, Kansas
City favorite at home. How much money flows from the
psychology kind of thing during the week, you get the
sharps early, but the betting public wouldn't have come in

(23:43):
till late.

Speaker 7 (23:45):
You know, it's an interesting game because years gone by,
you know, fifteen twenty years ago when I was behind
the counter, and man, that sounds like an Atturney, you go,
we'd kept that game off the board until we had
a better indication of Patrick Mahome's status. But odds makers,
to their credit, now a little bit more advanced and
no hang numbers are on on Sunday afternoon and they're
happy to take a bet. We saw that number move
as far as the Texans minus three amid speculation that

(24:06):
Mahomes would miss with the high ankle spring. Then you
saw that numbers start to come down with professional betters,
you know, adopting that asymmetric risk approach, figuring, all right,
even if Mahomes gets ruled out, how much further can
this number go? But if he gets upgraded, there's no
chance that this price is going to remain static. And
sure enough, Mahomes goes through what looked to be a
full practice relatively speaking, on Tuesday, a glorified walk through resorts,

(24:29):
and then officially upgraded earlier today number did get as
high as four. There was a little bit of resistance,
and I think some of the three and a half
that are still available out there are going to turn
into threes, because even if Mahomes is out there and
he's compromised, you worry about the offensive line that has
been the Achilles heel for the Chiefs if they're able
to protect him, especially in a matchup against the Houston
Texans defense that is well above average has the capabilities

(24:50):
to get after a passer. But clearly, in my opinion,
much more at stake for Kansas City as they fight
for that one seed in the AFC compared to the
Texans that are more or less locked into three or
four spot as the AFC South Division winner.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
All Right, Todd, Lastly, one of the other games, you
look at the Eagles and the Commanders, I know the
offensive line is going.

Speaker 3 (25:08):
To be it be a really stiff test for the.

Speaker 1 (25:10):
Eagles this week Washington to me, Yet, look, Washington is
really good. They've overachieved. I wonder if they're hitting the
wall a little bit. How do you see Eagles in
the Commanders.

Speaker 7 (25:21):
Commander's defense trending up a little bit, especially the way
that they've defended the run in recent weeks. And I
think getting Marshaw Laddam more healthy out there allows them
to be a little bit more versatile in the back end.
You can kind of play him on an island, whether
against AJ Brown or Devonte Smith and maybe commit additional
resources in the box to take away Saquon Barkley, who
openly admitted he's nowhere close to one hundred percent. The

(25:41):
Eagles win tomorrow or Sunday, they are able to clinch
the division, but Washington won't go down without a fight.
My biggest fear with this commander's offense is has it
been figured out? Didn't look all that dynamic in the
passing game, Jayden Daniels taking way too many sacks last Sunday,
allowing the Saints to get back in the game. And
the one thing we have seen from the Eagles since
there by, it's a defensive group that is playing, you

(26:02):
know what, arguably as the best in the entire league,
clearly showing signs that they grasp what Vic Fangio wants
from them. And Quinjon Mitchell there's a reason that he's
now the odds on favorite to win Defensive Rookie of
the Year. That group is really gelling at the right time.
And think we could be in store for a little
bit of a slugfest between two familiar folks.

Speaker 5 (26:18):
Now, Todd, Jason, do you always end with a quirky Hey,
what what odds would you give me? On this this one,
you kind of can set it yourself. What are the
odds that you've consumed a couple of the little liquid
courage for the cold, to warm yourself up, to help
numb the pain of a cult.

Speaker 7 (26:36):
I mean, looking from what I've been told by insiders
and one of the gentlemen I'll be traveling with who's
attended multiple Notre Dame games in the past, it's not
the easiest college destination to be able to find an
adult beverage in and around the stadium. So I'm not
sure if I have to pack the brown liquor in
my suitcase pick it up at O'Hara Airport as soon
as I land about six point thirty in the morning,
but there is no doubt there will be a few

(26:57):
adult beverages flowing through the veins, switching to a little
bit of hot chocolate before the postgame ride from South Bend,
beating the traffic headed to Fort Wayne, camping out for
the night before we trek into Columbus on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
He's on Twitter at Todd Furman, that is, at Todd Firman.
You can follow his travels this weekend and his big
picks of the week. Again the Bet the Board podcast.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Other games.

Speaker 1 (27:19):
He looks at Buccaneers Cowboys got the best bet going
on as well. Todd, as always Buddy appreciated enjoy get
a picture in front of touchdown Jesus and post it.

Speaker 7 (27:28):
I'll see what I can just in time for Hanukah.
It's exactly what my parents want to put on the mantel.

Speaker 5 (27:33):
There's your holiday card.

Speaker 3 (27:35):
See travels there it goes.

Speaker 1 (27:38):
To that is gonna be, you know, with Todd just
describing that, that sounds like it's such a cold weekend
outdoors list. I know, but you're going outdoors for a
night game on Friday night and you're gonna freeze and
then and then the next day right back out into
the cold.

Speaker 5 (27:55):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
I can't.

Speaker 1 (27:55):
I can't stand that. I've gotten soft. But you're going
to Detroit.

Speaker 3 (28:00):
It's so cold.

Speaker 1 (28:01):
Yeah, but that's just one trip. And I don't need
to go out at night if I don't need to,
if I don't want to. I mean, if I go
to white Castle, go to white Castle. But you know,
I mean I don't need to. I can I can
stay inside like you're outside, man, you have no choice,
Like you're going to do outdoor things in the freezing cold.

Speaker 5 (28:14):
All right, So we look tomorrow, light snow in the
morning for South Bend, Okay, And as the day progresses,
we've got a high of thirty four.

Speaker 3 (28:24):
What's the low, because that's where you're gonna be well, and.

Speaker 5 (28:26):
That's where we start looking at it. Sunset said five seventeen.
We're gonna get down to about twenty degrees, wins out
of the north northeast from ten to fifteen miles proor
Now there's an important thing if you have any any
idea that the kicking games may be affected here. But yeah,
thirty four there, and let's let's see if we can

(28:47):
get a Columbus weather up.

Speaker 6 (28:49):
Daniel.

Speaker 1 (28:50):
Yeah, that's where I went to the game last night.

Speaker 3 (28:53):
Do you want to go to the game today? No,
I just want to sleep.

Speaker 5 (28:55):
We're just gonna hang out inside and we ordered some
chicken way, he said, Away we go Saturday. Let's say
partly cloudy twenty nine, twenty nine degrees, thirteen degrees at night,
wins out of the north from five to ten bit
it in.

Speaker 1 (29:13):
There's Mike Harmon with your weather update whether on the sixes.
Thanks so much to Todd Ferman again. Check him out
on Twitter. At Todd Ferman. Now let's find out what's
trending from Martin Weiss, who has a big breakdown of
the Big Night by Big Bodega against the Timberwolves.

Speaker 3 (29:30):
M ub I do. We'll get to that one in
just a second.

Speaker 8 (29:33):
Of all the historic things that happened tonight, Jason Smith,
that doesn't doesn't break, but we'll we'll get to it
in a minute, I promise. Thirty four to twenty seven
the final score for Thursday Night football, the Los Angeles
Chargers victorious over the Denver Broncos. Denver once led this
game twenty one to seven. Stormed back. We saw a
history made in a first fair catch free kick made

(29:57):
in forty eight years. Cameron Dicker did from fifty eight
as the half expired. Justin Herbert was twenty three for
thirty one two touchdowns through the air. Gus Edwards had
a long forty three yard run in the fourth quarter
of the kind of device of the game. His fourteen
carries sixty eight yards two touchdowns. Aldric Estimate led the
Broncos in Russian with forty eight yards and a touchdown

(30:18):
two sixty three through the air. For Bo Nicks had
forty attempts twenty nine completions, two touchdowns through the air.
Denver falls to nine and six and Chargers nine to
six as well. In the NBA Jay you heard a
little bit of a tease of it, but the Bodega
Cat Karl Anthony Towns thirty two points, twenty rebounds and

(30:40):
six assists against his former former team, the Minnesota Timberwolves,
one hundred thirty three to one hundred and sevens the
final score. Anthony Edwards had seventeen to seven and three steals. There,
you know, not the same output from the rest of
the guys in the trade of Corinthony Towns making his
presence known.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
The Lakers beat the Kings.

Speaker 8 (30:59):
One thirteen to one hundred Anthony Davis with twenty one points,
twenty rebounds, three steals. De Montes Sabonis a double double
on his own right eighteen points, twelve rebounds, nine assists.
The Clippers beat the Mavericks one eighteen to ninety five
vicau Zu Box with twenty one points to fifteen rebounds.
The Golden State Warriors got molly wopped one forty four
to ninety three. The final score against the Memphis Grizzlies.

(31:22):
There Victoria's Memphis didn't score under thirty points in one quarter.
Every quarter they scored over thirty points. Is the better
way to say that, Martin, Way to go. The Celtics
lose to the Bulls one seventeen to one o eight.
Zach Lavine had thirty six points six rebounds of the
Celtics lose their sixth game of the year.

Speaker 3 (31:39):
The Thunder beat the Magic one oh five to ninety nine.

Speaker 8 (31:41):
Shake Gilgis Alexander thirty five points, six assists and four steals,
and the Utah Jazz won their sixth game of the
year one twenty six to one nineteen over the Detroit Pistons.
Lori Markin in twenty seven and fourteen. Back to you guys,
Thanks a bunch, Martin, appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
Yes, Chargers beat the Broncos tonight thirty four to twenty seven,
both teams nine and six, both teams likely heading to
the playoffs. The scary news for the rest of the
NFL coming off of this game?

Speaker 3 (32:30):
What is it? That's no, No, no, it's not.

Speaker 1 (32:33):
Then Tysher stop stop stop, you're misappropriating.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
Mike, No, it's not. It is the scary news for
the rest of the NFL.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
You'll never hear Blue Christmas the same again.

Speaker 1 (33:43):
You just know well Uh, Chargers beat the Broncos tonight
thirty four to twenty seven, and it was it was look,
it was a bigger game for the Chargers.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
They needed it more.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
The Broncos are right on the cusp of making the players.
They could have clinched with a win tonight, But on
the road on a Thursday night against the division rival,
they looked like they were rolling through, right. They looked
phenomenal the first half, like the Chargers weren't ready for
anything the Broncos wanted to do. And then the Chargers
really flip the script at halftime and we're able to
get come away with the win. Now, big win for

(34:15):
them that have like a ninety seven percent chance to
make the playoffs. Now there's really dense the possibility of
a couple of teams trying to rise up behind them.
But this is the kind of the scary news for
the rest of the NFL is that you see these
two teams play tonight and they're both pretty good, right,
They're both Are they both great teams? No, but they're
both pretty good teams. They're both teams you don't want

(34:37):
to play in the playoffs. They have great head coaches
and they are at the point where they're they're just
good enough to be dangerous in a we're playing with
free money kind of game. However, when you get deeper
in the playoffs outside of the first wildcard, you know,
you get hey, you know, these teams are not not

(34:59):
as talented as the so on the surface, you would say, okay, yeah, hey,
it's great they get in, but how long are the
charges in Broncos really going to be around? But this
is a scary part. This may be the last year
that you're gonna say how long are the Charges in
Broncos around?

Speaker 3 (35:13):
Because it is.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Scary for the other thirty teams and really will everybody
else in the AFC West, especially the Raiders, that they
are this good now they're gonna be ten plus win
teams and they're not even close to being the final
version of the team when they become competitive for a
Super Bowl, which will probably be for next season. All Right,

(35:36):
Sean Payton in had to take the team down to
the studs and move on from Russell Wilson. It's a
rookie quarterback in bow Nicks. What are you really gonna
get You don't have a lot of playmakers, right, you
don't have a lot of dudes. Each team doesn't have
a lot of dudes running the football, and yet the
Broncos are able to put up thirty forty points in

(35:58):
a game, have a big run over the course of
the past few weeks. Their defense was dominant the first
half plus of the season. Like, this is how good.

Speaker 3 (36:06):
They are and they don't have a lot of dudes.

Speaker 1 (36:08):
Now you get into free agency, the money they're gonna
be able to spend, the luring of the players where Hey, man,
I want to go there and win. Look at the
culture that this guy's made. I believe in bo Nicks.
I believe they have something going on there. And Sean
Payton is great and he knows exactly what to do
and how to build a team. Same thing with the Chargers.
Point they love Jim Harbaugh. He's come in and decided, hey,

(36:29):
we're gonna make the running game more important. We don't
really have any good running backs, but we're gonna do that.
And we're gonna draft Lad McConkie, who turns into a really,
really good player right away. But overall, the Chargers don't
have a lot of dudes, right they have Justin Herbert
right who you know, top ten quarterback in the NFL.
But they're not close to the version of the team
they're gonna be when they probably get a more Bell

(36:52):
Coow type running back in the offseason because they see
that all right, Edwards and Dobbins can't stay healthy and
you know, running the football is more difficult when they're
able to bring in another pass catching wide receiver that
can that you can play opposite of Lad McConkey, who's
gonna be in the slot most of the time, when
you can add to a defense that's been really good
up until the last two weeks, that's been really good

(37:13):
for the majority of the season. Like this is the
era of the Broncos and Chargers are gonna be here
going into next offseason.

Speaker 3 (37:20):
The coaches are here, they built the culture, and as.

Speaker 1 (37:23):
Good as these teams are right now, I mean not
even close to the level of talent they're gonna be at.
The AFC West might wind up running the NFL for
the next few years. With the Chiefs in the back
half of Mahomes's prime and the Chargers in the Broncos.
It's gonna be murder the way they're gonna beat each
other up every game the right the rest of the way.

Speaker 5 (37:40):
Now, there's a lot to take away from that. I mean,
obviously you get under a wave from a lot of
the problems that were caused or seeming problems that were
caused by the Russell Wilson. Let's eat this. Money doesn't matter.
You know, next year a new year, cap changes opportunity
to create some more space. Estimate in year two, we

(38:04):
would expect him to be better. He got his first
touchdown tonight, so we'll see more of him. The receiving core.
You got one more year at Courtland Sutton. You'll have
to address that before you start getting into franchise tags
or any of that fun stuff. So you're building there
for the Chargers. Yes, everything, he said, like one of
the guys that can bring back Keenan Allen. He said, Hey,
if the Bear's no want him, I can go back

(38:26):
to LA Between him and DJ Moore talking about vacations, let.

Speaker 6 (38:30):
Me tell you what I got for this week. It's
a Lions beat down. Anyway.

Speaker 5 (38:36):
All that to say, they do have to address some
of the things on defense, right, you're expecting Paraman back
tonight four games missed with the groin injury. He goes
right back out Marcus May you know him from his
time in the Jets. He got hurt again. You look
at Bosa and Khalil Mack. They're not getting any younger.
So there's certainly going to have to be some tweaks defensively.

(38:57):
But you've built the infrastructure, you've built the culture, and
you know what kind of players you want to go
out and get. And if you watch any of either
of these guys, who would want to go play for him?

Speaker 3 (39:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (39:08):
I mean really, I mean this is that they have
done something in such a short amount of time.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
When you can change a culture that fast.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
It was just this time last year where we said,
oh my goodness, the Charges, what a mess. All the
talent they have won an absolute mess. This year they
have less talent and their coach better and a better team. Now,
now all the Broncos, what a mess. They're gonna be
stuck with Russell Wilson forever. It's gonna be awful.

Speaker 3 (39:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (39:30):
No, we're gonna eat that money, let him go, and
we don't have a lot of guys and still we're
gonna be better.

Speaker 3 (39:34):
Yeah, And they know it's a magic trick.

Speaker 5 (39:35):
And I know a bunch of folks are doing deep
dives on the Broncos and the offense because some of
it is the Russell Wilson stands that will stand up.
A lot of the metrics may not have been terribly
different than they were a year ago with Russell Wilson,
but it's sure as hell feels different, doesn't it. Yeah, right,
And maybe maybe it's some of the fatigue, Maybe it's

(39:56):
some of the hey, the quirkiness of Russell Wilson, and
let's face it, game the game, it did not look
right at times.

Speaker 6 (40:05):
Right, he didn't look right.

Speaker 5 (40:06):
The offensive efficiency wasn't there, and certainly he and Peyton
seem to be at odds in terms of where he
was in a hierarchy. That look they allowed by giving
him his own office and all that other crap that
you'd read about. Now you got a rookie quarterback, and
even early this season didn't seem like they were always
on the same page. But to hear our guy, Jay
Glazer tell it, that was his guy all along. And

(40:28):
we talked about a pre draft that we expected that
was going to be the pick, and so far seems
to have worked out pretty well except in the second
half to night.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
I just think about it with adding nothing and having
a roster that nobody else in the NFL would really
want except the Giants, because the Giants roster is terrible,
like a roster nobody else would really want. And this
is where they're at. Man, good luck, and I'll tell
you the era of these teams. It's here, man, it
is absolutely here.

Speaker 6 (40:54):
See now, you gave them the era of good feelings?
What are you doing?

Speaker 1 (40:57):
That ins terribly the Bears. Look, when you get Mike Vrabel,
everything will be fine. Hey, coming up next, we may
have had a night more historic than what we saw
on Thursday Night football.

Speaker 3 (41:07):
Wait what that's next?
