Speaker 2 (00:37):
Nitny lyons lead back up to nine with the extra
point pending.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
I don't know how to tell you this. Alex and
Shay running the show tonight. When you don't check in
with Arnie the moment the previous show wraps up, his
anxiety level reaches what about the eighty sixth level of concern?

Speaker 4 (01:00):
What did you hear that?

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Because because they wouldn't answer me, because you started texting Shane, Shane,
you got me?

Speaker 4 (01:07):
Can you hear me?

Speaker 3 (01:09):
They don't answer me. They I don't know what they're doing. Seriously,
I have no idea.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
What do you think they're not in studio. I don't
know where they are.

Speaker 5 (01:18):
This is a national network, dude, we'll get to you.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Tight Shirt's having a cigarette a sun Shaye's asleep.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
I'm here.

Speaker 5 (01:26):
I was here.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
You know what he said to me? Blank, he goes,
I was just your ass out is probably what he said.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
He He's like, I was just giving you guys your space.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
Man who talks like that? Who talks like that?

Speaker 3 (01:41):
I was.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
I knew right away whenever I didn't hear the moment
that the show ended from Alliott and by the way,
to pull back the curtain, Arni and I dial into
the LA studios because he's in uh, well like New Hampshire.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Something like that.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
I'm like, yes, exactly, I'm in God's country. And then
the guys are out in that heathenist world of not
just kidding. They're out in Los Angeles, so we all
kind of make this triangle work.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
And Arnie's very needy.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
I mean, it's just and right away if you don't
let him know that you've got him and let him
yell at.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
You, very meticulous. I don't know if that's the word
I would use.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
It is I hook up at the exact same moment
to the second.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
To this every day, every time I.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Fill in to the exact second, I go ahead and
hit the button when I connect every time everything and.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
By the way, just out of curriot. That's more of
a creature of habit kind of a thing. Whenever it
comes to it, It's not about being meticulous. How early
before the show do you dial?

Speaker 4 (02:38):
In? One hour and six minutes?

Speaker 5 (02:40):
Flang.

Speaker 6 (02:40):
This guy will literally text me on Friday, two weeks
before his shift, I'm connecting McFly.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Are you ready?

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yeah, let's go come on our five minutes seconds.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Wow, well we're pumped to be filling in tonight. We
will take you right in to the new year twenty
twenty five, which we would have thought that we get
the last word on twenty twenty four. Yes, we do, yes,
and every time zone. I don't think we get to
ring in the new year on the West coast, so

(03:11):
Bernie will get to do that right after we're done.
But in the Eastern, in the Central, what in the
in Arizona, in the Mountain time zone, we get to
tell you happy New Year in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
If we don't have any more daylight savings? What does
that do to everything?

Speaker 4 (03:30):
Nothing? No, I don't think it really.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
The sun will stay out a little bit longer, which
means when you go dark at five o'clock.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
You'll still be like noon NFL games, right.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Yeah, of course, I mean it wouldn't change any times
or anything on that front.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Well, just Arizona, Indiana and places like that.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yeah, I mean it would still kick off at the
same time and everything. I mean, I at least I
assume so. But yeah, you're worrying about things that are
very much in the future. We got program to get
to tonight as we come to your live from the

(04:08):
com The way tire buying should be Now, Arnie, Tonight,
we are live during the Fiesta Bowl. We're watching the
first game of the quarterfinals, so we'll have live reaction,
instant reaction to that game tonight. A pretty good football game,
you know. Penn State jumped out to a fourteen zip
lead early. Boise battled back. They cut it to a
three point game just to start the second half, but

(04:31):
Penn State respawns a couple of big plays during their
most recent scoring drive, and here we sit with seven
twenty two to go in the third quarter. Penn State
twenty four, Boise State fourteen. It was an eleven play,
seventy five yard drive that put Penn State's league back
up to a two score game. And it was a

(04:52):
drive where they converted a third and fourteen and had
a couple of big plays, including a k On Allen
twenty three yard run to really put him in business
in Boisey territory. So all those nerdy notes and numbers aside,
what have you made so far this matter?

Speaker 3 (05:09):
When it was fourteen nothing, I'm like, Okay, it's about
to be twenty one nothing because I believe they just
fumbled by the way that Penn State, if you slowed
it down, I'm not so sure he had any feet
in in uh in fair territory.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
I think he might have caught it after that. But
that's beside the boy which one on the on the touchdown,
No on.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
The on the funnel recovery by gent Onty's fumble on
the yeah on the sideline where it was gonna be
it was gonna be twenty one nothing, this would have
been over twenty one nothing. Next thing, you know, Penn
State gives it back because and I was saying this right,
and Chris, I swear I was saying this right.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
It was going on.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Penn State just had a huge gain. They're of fourteen nothing,
they're inside like the twenty yard line, and they're about
to score again.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
There's no doubt.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
They're about the tree making twenty one nothing, and they're rushing.
And I understand that you want to keep them back
off their heels and keep them back on their heels
and all that stuff, but slow down and take a
breath so you don't make a mistake. And that's exactly
what they did. They made a mistake. And it's turning
around this whole ball game from that point on where
it could have been twenty one nothing to where it

(06:13):
is right now twenty four to fourteen.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
But it was really.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Seventeen fourteen at that point.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Well, I I thought the key in this game would
be someone's going to force a couple of turnovers and
it would lead to either Penn State rolling or Boise
State making this thing a little bit tighter than it
should be.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
Right, But so far that's been a push.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
On that front with turnovers right now, penalties have been interesting.
Boise's committed eight mistakes so far. And you know we're
watching Ashton Gent try to get going. He's only got
forty two yards so far tonight. And as a team,
Boise State just can't get the running game going yet.
Right there, and a big touchdown came the third court
on that. It's not a trick play, but where they

(06:57):
just had a bust in coverage from Penn State.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
Right the gend. Welcome to a team with a real defense.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Okay, do I go ahead and say that, or will
I get ripped all over the place for saying something
like that?

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Well, I mean, do you consider Oregon to haven't? Really? Really?

Speaker 3 (07:10):
No, not really, you don't consider the organ Okay, they're
a good defense, They're okay early in the year though,
And yes he had a good game against Oregon, but
now it's the Penn State defense.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
A good game against Oregon.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Yeah, well, one hundred and seventy five yards, one hundred
and ninety yards something like that.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
That's that's just a good game to you. Twenty five carries,
one hundred and ninety two yards and three scores.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
I said, he had a good game.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
That's an amazing game, dude.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Okay, so I'm not allowed to bring up then, and
then he only has forty two yards, and so it's
it's not a real defense that he's played against right now.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
No, I'm not arguing with it. But you're just like
dumping all over him. You said, welcome to a real defense.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
I mean exactly what I said, welcome to a real defense.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
My gosh, I'm not fighting with you over there. So
you're telling me now he should drop on the draft boards.
And he stinks because Penn State has done a good
job of limiting him and there's still five forty two
to go in the third quarter.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
Yeah, I didn't see. It's good. I'm glad they cut
off his mic.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
I mean, this dude has been pretty damn consistent all
season long, and the key to try to be boys
he has been to stop him and no one can
stop him. They're not they haven't completely stopped him yet.
They've slowed him down, but at any moment, dude, this
guy can explode and make a game of it.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Yeah, but you're not playing San Jose Community College now,
you're playing Penn State.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
You continue to ignore the fact that I bring up
what he did against Oregon, who is playing tomorrow in
the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
Yeah, no, I and he had a fantastic game. Okay,
is that better? Is better?

Speaker 3 (08:35):
There?

Speaker 4 (08:35):
You got?

Speaker 2 (08:36):
I think in one ninety two that's a that's an
amazing game in the world of college football that doesn't
really have individual rushing performances like that.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
By the way, if you and I were living in
Arizona and you said let's go to a sports bar
to watch the game, I'd say, you know what, Chris's
cheaper if we just go buy tickets and we go
to the game. Did you see the Dovidge tickets were
for the game?

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Stuart Mandel tweeted that, right, who writes for the athletic I.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Mean, first of all, where are those seats.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Forty dollars a piece, sixteen dollars for the Peach Bowl
at thirteen bus.

Speaker 4 (09:11):
In the Peach Bowl?

Speaker 2 (09:11):
And said, now, I don't know, they haven't really given
a full view of the upper deck here at the
Fiesta Bowl. I was asking the guys about it, but
it's it's almost as if, you know, you look at
the Boise State fans showed out Boise State fans.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
They have. They've brought it right. It looks great, but
I haven't seen like the upper deck.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
They haven't really pulled away, Like is that where is
there eight people sitting up there or what?

Speaker 4 (09:37):
Because probably I don't know.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
And they're being kind of smart about the shots they've
shown so far. In fact, every single time he kind
of pulls back, you try to get a look at
the upper deck, You're like, what's a crowd?

Speaker 4 (09:49):
Look like? They don't. You can't really tell.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Because I feel like the great mistake that was made
was not putting these quarterfinal games on campus sites. As
bad as the first round of the playoffs were was
however you would whatever the proper nomenclature would be. I
felt like what saved them was just the craziness in Columbus.

(10:12):
How wild it was in Happy Valley, the moo, the energy,
the juice that was permeating through Austin. It pains me
to say, who am I leaving out that had an
awesome home environment last week? Anyway here it's just like, ugh,
it's in a bull situation. It's in a bull setting.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
So I don't and you know what, like we brought
this up before.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
I mean, people just don't have the money to fly
to a quarter finals game, take a flight at a hotel,
you know, and get tickets to the game, which I
guess is really cheap. They're gonna wait till the finals,
or they're just gonna sit at Oman watch it.

Speaker 4 (10:47):
On TV and not spend anybody at all there, Chris.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
I don't college football as somebody who loves it, follows it,
eats it, breathes it, lives it. A guy living in
a college football world. That's that's my twenty four seven,
three sixty five. I don't know if there is any
sport that constantly gets in its fans pocket more than
college sports slash college football, because not only do you

(11:12):
have exorbitant ticket prices, even though that get in price
was like sixteen bucks, if you try to go through
the school, I'd be willing to better be like, what
probably one sixty ticket. I'm just I'm just guessing you
got to pay nil now, right, you got to pay
for the players. It's got to be fan funded. And
I just I feel like.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
That you could do.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
And then you're traveling, right, You're going from Boiseing to Arizona.
You're going from Penn State to Arizona, you're going from
Boston and lan you can, yeah, but they're not free.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
No, no, you could, but you where you are, you
could drive to a lot of games, right, that's right, Yeah,
you could do that, which is.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
But gas isn't free either, Arnie. No, no, no, that's true.
So I mean you're like, oh, yeah, you can just
drive there.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Yeah, the freaking expensive as hell with turnpikes and gas.
My point is the thing you can do is put
it on. Put it on the campus is do something
to help your friends out a little bit where they
could be there now the opposing fans would still have
to travel. Hey be better, right if your team win
to where they could host a playoff game. But I
don't like this now. We don't have the volume up,

(12:14):
we're not kind of engaged in what that feeling in
that atmosphere is right now. But I'm willing to bet
you any amount of dollars that I have right now
that it would be infinitely more juiced if this was
taking place right now Penn State.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
All right, I'm one hundred percent I agree with you
that there it'd be a better atmosphere, The game would
feel better, would feel bigger, and you know what, it
is the.

Speaker 4 (12:38):
Students aren't here. They're not at this game.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
They're they're on their campus, they're at a home and
it's really it should be partly for the students also,
And we're not getting any of the students in this part.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
I don't know, dude.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Some of those shots they show the Boise section seems
like there's a lot of students there. But to your point,
you're right, you don't get that true college atmosphere feel.
Let's see that they still have done an incredible job.
I can't tell if there's a single soul in that
upper deck, can you know?

Speaker 3 (13:07):
I'm looking hard to It's like they dull the whites
or something.

Speaker 4 (13:11):
I'm like, just make it a little brighter. I can't tell.
Is that the Is that the top of the stadium.
I'm not sure.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
I can't tell Boise State. It's paydirt, but there's a flag.
It's twenty four to twenty. You're probably a little bit
ahead of me, Arnie. What's the flag?

Speaker 4 (13:26):
I don't know. Actually I'm a little behind your right.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Oh and it's
on Boise State, so a touchdown will be wiped off
the board for an illegal hands in the face.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
What a shot. What a shot by the ESPN camera crew.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
They cut away to the Boise State fans that are
going crazy, and literally the moment they find out that
it's a it's a foul on their right guard for
illegal hands in the face, everyone just kind of drops.
You can see their energy. But Bois, he's got to
cut out the mistakes. I think what's at their tenth penalty.

Speaker 4 (13:58):
With that game?

Speaker 3 (13:59):
To me, I think that's going to be the next
major rule change in football where if they call a
flag and it ends up being a big play and
there's a flag on it, the officials could get together
if they want and go, you know what, and that
wasn't so egregious that it affected the play.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
It was a big play. We're gonna let it go.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
We're picking up the flag. Let's do something like that.
I can see that the next major rule change in football.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
I can't not with gambling. No, you kidding me.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
You realize what you're setting up. Look back to the
Texas Georgia game is show you know.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
I gotta tell you there's been more picked up flags
And let's see the last five years than my entire
time watching the NFL. I never would see a picked
up flag when I was younger. Never they would say, Oh,
we're picking up the flag, No big deal. I've seen
it what at least ten times in the last five years.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
My favorite thing about this is there's no way, I
mean no way anyone can go back and fact check
you on this.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
We just have to sit back on him. Yes, you're right.
Guess you're right. I got you're right. I mean, but yeah, Einstein.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
I assure don't think man, that you could ever get
in the world where they can wait and see what
kind of played is. You know that hands in the
face wherever they often that was incidental breaking back. Oh
my goodness, that'd be fantastic. So we're heading to the
fourth quarter so far, just your thoughts on this game

(15:27):
in general.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
Thought before we move on. Penn States. Penn States got
the lead twenty four to four. Ten States got the lead.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Boise, The first thing that comes to my mind is, yes,
they deserve to be here.

Speaker 4 (15:39):
I agree, they deserve to, you know, be playing in
this game.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
I'm still, you know, not crazy about the whole bye thing,
but that's that's something else we can get into later
on the way. The whole thing played out. But the
one thing for sure is they deserve to be in
this team in this twelve team playoff, and they may
or may not go toe to toe with any team
out there. But they're doing a damn good job against
Penn State, and they did a good job as you

(16:03):
mentioned earlier this year against Oregon.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Well, if you're stuck with us tonight, welcome. We're gonna
have some fun over the next four hours. We're going
to react to this and have instant reaction to the win.
I look down here and I saw Roman Numeral two
was looking ahead to the three quarterfinal games tomorrow. What
a weird New Year's Day though college football hasn't necessarily
I don't want to say embraced in New Year's Day,

(16:27):
but it's not as big of a deal for some
reason as it has been. Remember, you'd have like ten
bowl games and now you've only got the three tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
Taking the same thing that like after It was back
when I was younger, January first, and that's pretty much it.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
There was no college football after that day.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
Then slowly we got, you know, the playoffs on the
sixth of the seventh. Now we're stretching it out. But
really January first, when we wrapped it up and that
was it, you were bummed out and you had to
be all into the NFL at that point.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
I dig that they have decided to put these playoff
games on the first I miss. Now, have you been
into the other Bowl games? Have you found yourself watching?
I mean today I was all about it.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
Yeah. Today I was into the Michigan Alabama game like
everybody else. And no, I mean I watched the other
games a little bit, but I really wasn't into it
like I was the Michigan Alabama game, but I was
just ready for the Penn State Boyse game and the
three tomorrow. So no, not really. I just didn't get
into it all that much.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
You think, in your opinion that if Arizona would have
been in a bowl game, that would have probably drawn
you in a little bit more.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
I mean, it still would have been nothing, but I
would have watched it, you know, I would have. I
would have been nothing, so just it would have been
would have been the meanings Bowl games, just like everybody else.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
Well okay, well then let me pose this to you.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
You say it's meaningless, so that means Michigan beats Alabama
today nineteen to thirteen. Right, Illinois beat South Carolina twenty
one to seventeen, right, mean anything for the debates that
we've had about whether or not those two teams belonged
to the playoff.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
What like whether Illinois deserved to be in the playoffs
or or whether like you know, whether uh, Michigan or
Alabama deserves to be in it.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
I mean Alabama, I mean Alabama.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
South Carolina and Alabama will considered two of the four
teams that were the last teams out. South Carolina got
beat today by Illinois twenty one. Alabama got beat by
hold on, let me make sure you know this. Alabama
got beep by Michigan nineteen to thirteen. Miami lost Iowa State.
I kind of feel like, if you wanted to make

(18:37):
a statement that you belong in the playoffs, regardless of
what the roster looks like, especially if you're starting quarterback
and star receiver is playing, you got to go out
and win the damn football game. Now, some would argue
and say, no, like you just did. It's a meaningless game.
But you're not factoring what happens in these games into
that argument.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
No, Because I mean, we would take to the Miami game.
They played their back for half the game, So there's
a built in excuse right there. Sure Alabama could have
been just so disappointed about not making the twelve team
playoff that they just didn't give a damn. There was
just no motivation. And you could tell there was no motivation.
They were town sixty nothing in the first they had

(19:17):
nothing coming out of you know, from jumpstarts. So I
mean they even could tell it was a meaningless game,
otherwise they would have been more motivated for it.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
I just feel like, if you want, if you want
to be able to back up your argument meaningless or not,
you go win that football game. Because Wonny chrus So,
you force people, You force people Arnie to basically say, oh, yeah,

(19:47):
they ended up winning their bowl game and they looked
better while SMU and Indiana and we'll see what happened
to the boy gets smoked. Yeah, maybe they did belong
in there. I don't know, make maybe I'm crazy about this.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Well, I saw something the three games at Alabama lost
this year, and I'm not exactly sure the exact point spread.
I think one was sixteen, one was fourteen, another one
was sixteen. Sure, Nick Saban did that three times in
his career at Alabama. It happened three times this year
for Alabama. And I don't think it's the biggest bowl

(20:22):
loss in all of like bowl history, or the second
biggest bowl loss when it comes to point spread.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
For a team to lose six, that's pretty impressive. Their
six point loss is their second biggest bowl loss.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
They've had six No, they're six sixteen was oh.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Oh, I thought you said in a bowl game. Yeah, no,
they don't. Get me wrong. I'm not trying to defend
them and say that they belong. I think my point
is you want to say these are meaningless bowl games,
you won't get too much pushback from me, But you
got to go out and win your game if you're
gonna cry about not getting in the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (20:55):
That's my point, right.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
I understand your point, And you know, maybe they were
thinking too little, too late, and maybe you do have
a point there, but it still was a meaningless game
and that you could tell there was no motivation.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
But dude, he were saying no motivation. They crap in
the first well, it was.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
Pouring their first twenty two play And I wrote this
down earlier. The first twenty two plays for Alabama netted
negative three yards. There were two fumbles and interception and
a turnover on downs and then they if you want
to say they didn't have any motivation, then why do
they come back and end up like in the game late.

Speaker 4 (21:31):
I mean there was motivation. They just got punched in
the face.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
I would have loved what they said to them at halftime.
I can only imagine what the coaches said through over
at that time. I mean, Noro, what fumbled two interceptions
in a fumble in the first is that.

Speaker 7 (21:44):
What it was?

Speaker 4 (21:44):
He was miserable. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He had the
one that slipped out of his hand. It was wild.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
Okay, oh my gosh, we got a break. We'll fight
about college football if you want tonight. I will sit
back and enjoy watching this fiesta bol that's headed to
the fourth quarter. I guess I should say in the
middle of the fourth quarter, somewhat in doubt. He mentioned
though the big turnover and how that could hurt Boise State.
They just had a big interception as they were driving.
Then Penn State got a stupid personal foul afterwards where

(22:12):
one of their guys took a cheap shot on Ashton
genty so Penn State gets the football back. They're up
twenty four to fourteen with fourteen forty eight to go
in the game, deep in their own territory. Arnie and
I will keep you covered all night long right here.

Speaker 4 (22:24):
On Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (22:26):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio App.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
With his stinking genius Arnie Spaniel. I'm Chris Plank. We're
watching Boise putting a little bit of a drive together.
They're in Penn State territory, down twenty four to fourteen
in the Fiesta Bowl. Steve Sager's got an update coming
up here in just one moment, so I can put
this to bed. Yeah, so we don't, you know, just
kind of nickel and dime over it all night long.

(22:57):
It does not matter to you that Alabama law today
or that South Carolina loss today. That's irrelevant to you
in the conversation about if they did or did not
deserve a shot in the playoffs. And this might be
a little bit more specific to Alabama because South Carolina
had to head to head losses to Ole Miss in Alabama.
But what you're saying is despite my feeling that it

(23:18):
kind of stains their argument. You say, no, no, no,
don't get that carried out well.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
To me, it's about the totality, and it's the three
losses they had. You know, they were favored in by
double digits and all three of those games, and they
lost all three of them. And yeah, sure the last
one may have a small part of it, but so
did the other two also, and they were already told
no before this third game, So it doesn't have as

(23:43):
big as the other two games in.

Speaker 4 (23:44):
My opinion, And this one's still it's still a meaningless game.

Speaker 3 (23:49):
Ninety nine point nine percent of every way you want
to look at it, Chris, Maybe to your point, I
can understand you trying to make a point like, Okay,
we told you were deserving of this off TV playoff,
and perhaps if they would have put a good showing,
maybe would have changed their mind.

Speaker 4 (24:05):
But no, that's not the case.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Now, all right, Boise State drives deeped. Saga is all
over it. Let's get an update with the saga on
what's trending. Oh, by the way, Arnie cashing genty against
a real defense. Now up to ninety five yards. He
couldn't wait to.

Speaker 4 (24:20):
Throw that in there, could you? You were just giving
me crap as I said that. Yeah, slow start.

Speaker 8 (24:25):
He's over four yards of carry now close to one
hundred yards rushing. For the Fiesta Bowl. It is a
ten point Penn State lead over Boise State. Early fourth guys,
who did we talk about on the Sunday Night Show
going into the NFL Draft this year? Penn State tight
end Tyler Warren and tonight he has six catches sixty
three yards, two touchdowns. In fact, Drew Alar threw two

(24:48):
touchdown passes on the first two drives tonight for the
Nitney Lions. He did fumble on the third drive. It
was a field goal at the end of the first
half and made it seventeen to seven Penn State. The
team's exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter, but then Boise
State had a long drive going about seven and a
half minutes through an interception. They've got the ball back
about eleven minutes to play. It is twenty four fourteen

(25:11):
Penn State and the lead at the Fiesta Bowl. This
is a quarterfinal of the new College Football Playoff. Three
quarterfinals coming up tomorrow. Texas will play in the Peach
Bowl on New Year's against Arizona State, which is won
six in a row. Texas is twelve and two, it's
only two losses to Georgia. Then number one ranked Oregon
tomorrow has its Rose Bowl quarterfinal against Ohio State. The

(25:32):
Buckeys lost at Oregon thirty two to thirty one in
mid October. The night game tomorrow, number two Georgia with
its Sugar Bowl quarterfinal New Year's Night against Notre Dame.
Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will miss the playoffs because.

Speaker 4 (25:45):
It's not on too eight nine o'clock.

Speaker 8 (25:47):
He's at UCL surgery. Yeah, are we even assuming that
it's going to start by then? Just for the record,
we had bowl game victories today for LSU and Louisville,
for Illinois and Michigan as well. Wolverines got out to
a sixteen nothing lead in the first quarter and beat
eleventh ranked Alabama nineteen to thirteen. Michigan's defense with five

(26:08):
sacks and forced three turnovers by quarterback Jalen Milroe. In fact, Alabama,
with two minutes left, had first and goal at the
Michigan fifteen and through four straight incompletions. The Dallas Cowboys
cut running back Ezekiel Elliott forty nine Ers QB Brock
Perty has a bruised elbow. He'll likely miss the finale
on Sunday with nerve inflammation. The Patriots wave pass rusher

(26:29):
Yannick and Gakway. Raven's running back Justice Hill is due
to play Saturday against the Browns despite missing practice again
today due to illness. Cleveland says it may play two
quarterbacks this weekend, Dorrian Thompson, Robinson and Bailey z Appy.
The Jets signed kicker Greg Joseph to the active roster
and cut kicker Anders Carlson. Kicker Greg Zerlin was placed

(26:49):
on IR. The Jets are due to interview Ron Rivera
on Thursday for their head coach opening, and Rex Ryan
expects to interview there. Dolphins QB Tyler Huntley is due
to get more rapid throughout the week in practice as
Tataga bay Low and miss Sunday's win with a hip injury.
Miami at the Jets this weekend in the NFL three
division races still to be decided this weekend and that

(27:11):
last AFC wild Cards, but in the NBA, Boston ripped
Toronto Raptors have lost eleven in a row. Oklahoma City
came back to beat Minnesota. OKC has won twelve straight.
The Lakers are hosting a Cleveland team that's won seven
in a row, and the Cavs are winning seventy four
sixty five. If Cleveland wins, they'll be twenty nine and

(27:31):
four on the season.

Speaker 3 (27:33):
If the Lakers were twenty nine and four, we'd be
talking about it every night.

Speaker 8 (27:36):
Yep, it's yep, you are absolutely correct, and we'd also
probably be able to name their roster.

Speaker 4 (27:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (27:44):
The Memphis Grizzlies in the third quarter lead at Phoenix
seventy four to sixty seven. I'm not God, even Nance
Junior is not playing these days. College basketball, West Virginia
won at number seven Kansas, sixty two to sixty one.
And there was outdoor hockey Wrigley Field. In the NHL.
Saint Louis a six to two winner at Chicago. Again

(28:04):
at the Fiesta Bowl, Penn State twenty four, Boise State fourteen,
About ten minutes to go. Boise State is in the
red zone. Down ten back to you in fact, oh
my gosh, big sack all the way back to the
twenty one yard line. Was that card to the gotam man.
Penn State's got some dirty defensive ends, and I mean

(28:25):
that in a good way. Every single time it looks
like things are starting to go Boise State's way, Arnie,
Penn State has a big defensive.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
Play that Oh my gosh, that poor left tackle just got.

Speaker 2 (28:35):
Smoked off the ball, So I'll push it all the
way back to the twenty one yard line, second and
twenty For Boise it's kind of like doing the Super
Bowl show, huh watching it not quite the same level
of excitement, but a big time game like this, let's go,
no it is.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
I mean, you know when we work certain holidays and
people don't realize a lot of people listen on Christmas.
You think people didn't listen like Christmas. There's more people
than you think that listen to Christmas. There's twice as
many more people that listen on New Year's did you
think especially well they go, oh yeah, I mean sure,

(29:11):
there's the young age group that goes out, say what
thirty and under twenty five and under that go to
the bars. They're going to the clubs, they're going to
whatever the New Year's Eve parties. Maybe the thirty and unders.
But a lot of people are staying at home. You know,
it's a lot of people call it amateur hour. You
had a one playoff game going on, you got three tomorrow.

(29:34):
New Year's Eve is on a Tuesday night. You know,
it's not like you don't have work the rest of
the week after Wednesday. I think a lot of people
just decide to stay home, relax and watch the playoff game.
I think this game is gonna have tremendous ratings when
it comes out.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
Really, because well, I mean, and again you make the
take about what more flags being picked up than you've
ever seen in your life, we can't really.

Speaker 4 (29:57):
Back that up. No sports somebody can deny it so well,
but I can't show.

Speaker 2 (30:02):
I can't tell you that college football games on New
Year's Eves have been ratings disasters.

Speaker 3 (30:08):
Yes, you're right about that. We've had that and they've
been horrible, absolutely horrible. Right, you've been right about that.

Speaker 4 (30:13):
So what makes you think this is different Tuesday night?

Speaker 3 (30:16):
And it's also it's different with the twelve team playoff
than it was in past years.

Speaker 4 (30:22):
It just feels like this is bigger than the past
couple of years.

Speaker 2 (30:26):
So one thing we didn't know by the field goal,
no good wide right. So to remain it's all position
game killer, nine.

Speaker 4 (30:33):
To twenty to go. Let me see, was it a
bad hole? No good hold, good snap? He just missed it.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
It was like it's like one of my five irons.
You know, you played out to the right and you
kind of keep waiting for it to hook and it
never hooks.

Speaker 4 (30:46):
Oh, you have that problem. No, here is one thing.

Speaker 2 (30:50):
Let's just from a ratings perspective, and I'm getting a
little bit better about not caring about TV ratings because
I don't know how much it's gonna matter in the
few because listen, I watch it and the NBA's all
I hear about the NBA TV ratings is that they
suck and they're terrible and no one's watching. And they

(31:11):
just signed like a billion dollar deal right for their
TV rights. But with that, with that in mind, you
go back nine years and I don't know if you
guys remember they had the big Jimmy Kimmel would do
the commercials and it's like the New Year's Eve party,
this year's college football blah blah blah, And the numbers
were down thirty seven percent overall and thirty four percent

(31:33):
for the first game. The other game was Clemson Oklahoma
that was in the Orange Bowl, right, and that was
in the middle of the freaking afternoon. It was down
thirty nine percent and forty five percent from the year before.
So I mean there were big drop offs. So that
would be what in year two of the playoffs. But
to your point, to your point, this year's ratings for

(31:55):
the bowl games has been really good, and the two
games that didn't go up against an NFL game two
weeks ago had really good ratings, So we'll see they.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
Don't higher ratings of the NBA. Did they say NBA
Finals games?

Speaker 4 (32:08):
Did I hear that right?

Speaker 2 (32:10):
Or well, I mean, Arnie, you could do a show
called Arnie's Picks that would probably get higher ratings in
an NBA game.

Speaker 4 (32:15):
Oh, you meet NBA Finals So I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (32:17):
Yeah, they had the two games that did not go
up on that for the I guess would be three
games that didn't go up against an NFL game did
really well. You know the game that the game that
they put I think it was a Texas Clemson and
the Penn State SMU game. They put those up against
the NFL and it was not very good no Ohio State, Tennessee,

(32:40):
and then the Friday night Notre Dame, Indiana, they drew
really impressive numbers. So I'm not wanting to disagree with you.
I'm just saying that New Year's Eve college football has
not been a good recipe for ratings.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
Well, they're not going to touch Ohio State Oregon. We
all know that that's going to be the highest rated
out of the four.

Speaker 2 (32:57):
Well, it's right in the middle of the afternoon on
January one, no real competition. Everyone's kind of looking forward
to it. I'm excited to talk about it tonight. I
think Boise State's been in incredibly gosh forgotten.

Speaker 4 (33:10):
About, if you will, leading up to this game.

Speaker 2 (33:13):
But that's yeah, that's gonna be the highest rated of
these games right now. I just don't know if I'm
on board with you that this is got to everyone's
staying in tonight and it's gonna be all about this
bowl game. Hope you're right for the sake of just,
you know, the excitement of the college football playoffs and
the TV numbers. But I just don't know if that's
going to.

Speaker 4 (33:28):
Be the case.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
They still have not shown a shot that gives us
a good feel already if they're actually fans sitting in
the upper deck of this game.

Speaker 3 (33:36):
If they're doing that, there's a reason why. Well there's
a reason why. The tickets rolling forty dollars. By the way,
that's about the cheapest you're ever going to get for
the Fiesta Bowl. I don't think it ever gets down
like twenty.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
Dollars or anything like that. Chris. That's about as cheap
as it gets.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
You see this list of miscues, two missed field goals,
They've lost a fumble in the first quarter, had an
interception in the fourth quarter. And for Boise State ten
pennalies tonight you seventy five y yards, the fumbling.

Speaker 4 (34:02):
The interception.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
Penalties on that alone, yet alone, everything else there, Chris.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
They've been their own biggest enemy. And Penn State has
been absolutely atrocious when it comes to their third down
play calling. They'll get chunk yards running the football, then
all of a sudden we'll get a third and short.
It's like through the ball as far as you can now,
though they move the sticks twenty seven county to go
first down.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
Penn State the flea flickers that would It was on
third and one where they tried to throw it back
to the quarterback. I go that brass from the dumbest
play call I think I've ever seen in my life
in any football game.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
So bad so twenty four to fourteen. We're watching it
with you. The Fiesta Bowl Penn State leads Boise State.
Talking college football playoffs with Arnie and Plank and for
Jason and Mike right here on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (34:55):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific.

Speaker 2 (35:03):
Oh, it might be ball game. Penn State Nicholas Singleton
fifty eight yards to the house, thirty one to fourteen
thirty What did I say? Thirty one to fourteen thirty
one fourteen. Penn State leads in the Fiesta Bowl four
minutes and forty six cents away by crouching a spot

(35:26):
in the college football playoff semi finals.

Speaker 3 (35:28):
By the way, I had to request this song and
our producer didn't even know what it was. Never heard
of it before in his life.

Speaker 4 (35:34):
Pretty sure Alex would know, Lola, No.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
He'd swear, I'm telling you, I swear yeah, no idea
sign do?

Speaker 5 (35:40):
I just like to gas ARNI you did not know.
You did not know, just like I was not checking
in with you, right.

Speaker 4 (35:48):
But Lonela, I can't sing like Rob Parker can. No, no,
you can't.

Speaker 2 (35:53):
But by the way, when he can. I think Alex
ty Shirt saved twenty twenty five for the odd couple
earlier tonight. Did you get the kudos on that?

Speaker 5 (36:01):
I don't know, Okay, I thankfully did.

Speaker 4 (36:06):
Something like a like a nut coughing. Yeah, Rob, No,
it was that the cough was on the fact.

Speaker 6 (36:12):
Yeah, it's because Rob coughed in the open, so I
just kept trolling him with a sound effect.

Speaker 4 (36:17):
I was amazing.

Speaker 2 (36:18):
That's my that's my greatest fear is making a mistake
that ty Shirt catches, because I'm gonna hear about it
for the rest of my career.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
So yeah, yeah, I just turned on my mind. Can't
you just turn if you don't have a cough button?
Just turned on your mic?

Speaker 5 (36:34):
Yeah he was doing it mid talk though, No, that's
the way mid sentence.

Speaker 3 (36:37):
Hey, let me tell you something, man, I'm a pro.
Ask Chris. I could do the show and throw up
in mid sentence and come back and you couldn't hear nothing.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
Well, you did, really agree? With me on about every
single take. I know that hour later you disagreed with me,
and I'm like, what in the world happened in the
first hour of the show. We even paid attention. Shaye,
by the way, is running the pro as well. Eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox. If you guys want
to jump in on New Year's why not, we can
open it up eight seven seven nine Night six sixty
three sixth. I mean, listen, you think there's a billion

(37:10):
listeners out there?

Speaker 4 (37:11):
Quarter of a billion, quarter quarter billion? Yeah, man, you're
denying it. No, not at all. I mean I can't
can't deny it at all. No, don't think I can.

Speaker 6 (37:20):
Arnie, with you two hosting me and Shay in the
studio with Steve, there's probably two more people.

Speaker 4 (37:24):
That's right, That's right. I'm so happy to sagers here.

Speaker 2 (37:27):

Be Healthy Again PhD Weight Loss. Now you've got on
the Roman numeral rundown. For those of you who are
not familiar with our game, Arnie and I do the

(37:49):
Sunday Night Show here on Fox Sports Radio from eleven
p to two AA. So depending on how you look
at Sunday night and a Monday morning, we either recap
the weekend, well, oh, we kick off the new week.
I kind of consider it a little six in one hand,
half a dozen any other. And Arnie, instead of like
using a Google doc or you know, sit in a

(38:10):
laundry list, in an email or in a word document,
now Arnie sends a handwritten rundown with Roman numerals.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
We call it a Roman numeral rundown.

Speaker 3 (38:18):
I'm surprised people don't use Roman numerals anymore. I feel
like it's the metric system that we've just abandoned it.
People have got to use Roman numerals, right, I mean, whatevers.
If you're reading, like a project, there's something that's got
to have Roman numerals.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
I would say, people barely know how to write anymore,
and you're wanting them to use Roman numerals more.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
How do you not use Roman numerals when you're writing nowadays?

Speaker 2 (38:43):
I don't ever know an era when they were used
to begin with. My introduction to Roman numerals was Super
Bowl in wrestlemin.

Speaker 4 (38:50):
How would you write an outline We're not using Roman.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
Numerals, numbers, bullet points, italics, underline bold fail. That's why
you went the Tulsa That's I know, right, How dare I?
But I never had a college class on Roman numerals.
What's going on at the University of Arizona. Ladies and gentlemen,
let's talk Roman numerals.

Speaker 4 (39:10):
V is five?

Speaker 2 (39:11):
Oh, v is five? Okay, I mean, what are you
talking about? Penn State nearly gets another interception on a
tipped pass.

Speaker 3 (39:18):
But I bring up I am excited about Roman numerals seventeen.

Speaker 2 (39:21):
By the way, Brady to play well. I was gonna
say the Roman numeral Rundown had a handful of college
football things. But there were one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
nine nine of the seventeen Roman numerals dealing with the NFL.
So we've got a lot of NFL to get to
in the second half of this program. But our focus

(39:41):
here in hour one is is where it should be,
I think, and that's on the college football playoffs. Right now,
you've given Penn State. Now, Penn State, we all felt
it had the easiest path, right. You get an smute
team it's never been in this moment and a Boise
State team that hasn't played the most challenging schedule about
it during the top of the hour, Okay, are you

(40:02):
looking at Penn State as a team now that, despite
getting a little bit of a softer path, could potentially
make a run towards not just the championship game, but
the first national championship. In a minute, at Penn State,
they've got their Soviet are there, not finished yet, but
they're on the verge. The SEGA will have an updated Moments,

(40:23):
but the Nitney Lions leaded thirty one to fourteen in
the Fiesta Bowl.
