Speaker 2 (00:21):
This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hello, Welcome inside, Happy Monday, the Jason Smith Show with
my bas friend Mike Harmon, and I know the National
Championship game was over. It was done. We were writing
the epitaph for Notre Dame. Not so fast, Jaden. Greathouse
has just caught a touchdown pass for Notre Dame. They

(00:50):
are set to go for two. That would make this
a two score game with three minutes to go in
the third quarter. Ohio State had just continually dip dominated
Notre Dame since the initial drive of the game. Notre
Dame is in a shovel pass to love. Make it
thirty one p. Fifteen still a two score game. As
much as Ohio State is dominated. Great House striking just

(01:14):
like we've seen him do in the postseason earlier. This
is now suddenly, thankfully become a game that's not just
going to be a slow and steady march towards crowning
Ohio State. He catches a nice slant pass, breaks a
couple of tackles, a big spin move, and he is
off to the races to help make this a game.
Still three minutes ago in the third quarter.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Turned and spun and it was shocked there was nobody
there to drill him. Man, it had been the issue
for Notre Dame every down after that first drive, that
eighteen play drive that started things like.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Well, all right, we're throwing haymakers right away.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Ohio State. March is right back. And then Notre Dame
could not get a stop on a third down. All right,
first down, yeah, great, cool, second second and long cool,
all right.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Third down conversion yeah yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
And then they finally stopped him on a big third
down because well, the wide receiver was wide open and
Howard missed him and they had to settle for a field.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Go like, wow, yeah, Will Howard's Will Howard's having a
great night tonight. Just think of the night Kyle McCord
would be having if we'll.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Oh Man, Yeah, you guys were the ones that coached
the greatness out of him.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yeah, I mean, look, just wait till Kyle McCord goes
number one. Overall. There was even a guy. It's his
fault we lost to Michigan. Look, so thirty one fifteen,
still a ways to go for Notre Dame. But they
do get back in it. And sometimes games are difficult
to break down. Sometimes they're nuanced, sometimes they are Hey, listen,

(02:41):
there's more than what we just saw. But this game
so far has been pretty simple. Uh, Ohio State is
the better team. They have the better roster, they're more talented,
They are the better team. Notre Dame is a good team.
They're a really good team. They're not at Ohio State's level.
Is this is why we talk about one hundred million
dollars roster that Ohio State. I see twenty million dollars roster.
I'm like, dude, you think they only spend twenty million

(03:03):
dollars on this team? See, they spend twenty million dollars
the quarterback position. Just stop. What we are seeing, what
we have seen so far is just Ohio State is
better and They're putting it out there and in a
weird way, and I know it's gonna sit where when
I say this, Notre Dame's touchdown on the opening drive
might have been a great thing for Ohio State because

(03:23):
what did I say? My only concern for ohis Io
State was coming into this game that they that the
Michigan Ohio State team would show up where Howard makes
a couple of mistakes and Chip Kelly and Ryan Day
get really conservative and you turn that game into a toss.
We're not gonna throw the ball. We're gonna try to
control clock and and try to just win this game
and just outlast them. That's the only thing I could

(03:44):
have seen them losing to Notre Dame for. And the
fact that Notre Dame goes down the field and Riley Leonard,
who I'm sure was ready for an ice bath after
that first drive, he goes in for that touchdown. Ohio
State knows, no, we need to be aggressive from here,
and we're trailing. It was a ten minute drive. We're
finally getting the football. Let's go, let's go, let's go
three touchdowns to end the first half. That was it was,

(04:07):
It was I don't know that I'm saying it was
the best thing for Ohio State. But this certainly put
the possibility of, hey, we're going to ease our way
in this and we're not gonna make mistakes. Our talent's
gonna overwhelm. Eventually, it took that off the table because
I've seen Ryan Day and Chip Kelly do that right
Michigan a couple other games. I've seen them say, hey,
we're going to back off, throw in the football because
Howard's throwing a couple of picks, or for whatever reason, Hey,

(04:28):
we really don't don't want to give the game to
the other team. And that's what happened against Michigan. They
got scared and they got really conservative. And I saw
that happening tonight. Notre Dame's really good defense there back seven.
We've talked about them, but that first touchdown took that
off the table. Took off the table. Hey, well, let's
let's let's try to ease things here. Let's run the football.
Le's established Linscrims. No, this was man. We got a
answer that was that was ten minutes down our throat.

(04:50):
That was Elway's version of the draw all the way
down our throat. So that really played into Ohio State
and took that off the table, and Ohio State has
just been to rich fixed since then. Notre Dame absolutely
needed that touchdown to have any kind of make the
fourth quarter, make anything look any good here in the
next week.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, that's the hope, though, was on that first, you know,
me selfishly looking at it, not only because I picked
Notre Dame like potentially a fool?

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Here?

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Would you upset by perfect weekend? Otherwise I'm four and
oh this would be a terrible way.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
To be terrible. I was perfect this weekend. I was.
If you listened to me, you went undefeated in NFL
picks this weekend. Wait a second, as long as well
hang on, the Textans are playing, you went undefeated. If
you listen to me, wait for it. Wait, textans are
for wait for it. Just would you just wait for it? Frostburg,
just wait? The Chargers aren't playing either. Okay, you would

(05:41):
have been undefeated if you listen to me this weekend
football picks, you would have gone four and oh. All
you had to do was listen to me. Yeah, so
I had to listen and then just go the opposite
way of what I just picked. Undefeated defeated, Yes, undefeated.
Under just listen to me. This is you did it

(06:02):
because you went opposite me. That's the only reason you did.
Why would because what you do, that's what you do.
It's what you do that yes, you did? You are
you hate? You hate my family, my wife's family in Detroit,
all right, you hate dan Quinn, but somehow you picked
him anyway, So I know that was not what you
want to do. What do you ever do that?

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Things about dan Quinn all the time he gave up
one hundred and fifty eight Jordan, here he is in
the NFCO.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Men.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
You hate, you hate him, you hate my family, and
you still win again. So now I know you.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
I did tell you we're going to come back on
the Lions. For all the trick plays, uh and chicanery
through the year, you just what just went the opposite
It just went the No, it's not true.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
I just thought I was just right. That would be No,
you went the opposite way. You need to give reasons
when when you said I'm going out one of those shows,
I just said, here's a pick. Who do you like? Uh?
I like the other team? Why? I don't know? Crazy?

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Look, I leave that to other homer select swhere if
they might do that, just randomly name a team.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Now you see the thing is, I always thought that
that would be a great gambling strategy. Now hear me
out on this, Okay, sure is that if you're a
beat and lots of we're all bad gamblers, right, if
you're a bad gambler. Now I've had a great hot
year picking football games. This was a screeching halt. But like,
if you're a bad gambler and you lose money, can
you be a great gambler by just saying, Okay, this

(07:26):
is what I think for this game, and then just
go the opposite, Just bet the opposite. Would you win?
You know, would you win? You might need would would
win if that has a small steak, and have that
over the course of next season. I'm just saying, like,
you know, here's what I think. And instead of that,
I'm going the other way, Like when I when I
lock in, what do you want? I like this game? Why?
Because I think this is gonna happen, and this is
gonna happen. This is gonna happen. Okay, great, are you

(07:48):
ready to make your bet? Yeah? Give me the other
team and that's my bet. Wait why because I'm going
opposite of what I did. I wonder if that's if
that can be a successful gambling strategy.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
But what's curious, right, you know, top of that is
I had a pretty good year picking against the spread.
I could show the documentation off it, but I had
no money on the line because it was for giggles, right,
just all right, here's the line, just like the the
Houston Kansas City game. Well, if you lost on it,
then you didn't get the right line because that line
was sitting at eight and a half all week long.

(08:19):
And then people are like, well it's nine and a half.
It's like if you got it, wait it was nine
and a half. But it's always what what did it
go off at?

Speaker 4 (08:27):
Right?

Speaker 1 (08:27):
That's always wait, went off at nine and a half,
so off, but you might have gotten it early. Yeah,
but what are you going about talking about the game? Hey,
this is either a really devastating win for you, or
it's an incredibly devastating loss, or it's an incredible win,
or it might not be either. So you have to
pick something you know. You can't just say hey, either
it's well and you.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Can't release not the specificity of it anyway, because they
still quote frown on that do I Meanwhile, I'll go
which one of these? Meanwhile, go go to this website
right now and make your names on.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
The next thing.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
But the curer in this game was would the man
demand coverage for Notre Dame be.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Be enough? Right?

Speaker 3 (09:07):
With all the wide receivers, with all of the options
that you have for Ohio State, would they have enough
in the secondary. And we've lauded the style they've played
with all year long for Notre Dame, and the answers no,
because there seems to always be an extra man. So
like they haven't been able to get pressure up front
on Howard clean pocket all day long without bringing an

(09:28):
extra guy. And there it's just becomes the Swiss Army
Knight and it becomes the right pick your poison? Which
guy is Howard gonna single out on a given throw? So, yeah,
it's it's a game in theory. We'll see if we
can get a good fourth quarter here live live betting
got up to twenty four for twenty four and a half.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Really foot down. Yeah, So now you're feeling you're feeling okay,
So you thought it at that point you might feel
a little bit better if you got in there. Yeah,
where do we sit right now? First down for Ohio State.
They were just faced a third and short. They were
able to convert, so they have the football up thirty
one fifteen over Notre Dame a minute and a half
to go in the third quarter. Look, if Notre Dame

(10:08):
is going to win this game, it needs to be
goose eggs on the scoreboard for Ohio State the rest
of the way. Really, I mean really, Ohio State is
one score of any kind away from clinching this game,
all right, I mean it could be a safety, could
be a rouge. A ruge, could be a rouge, right,
and kick it off the net comes down. I was
gonna say me, you might have to explain to people
what a rouge rouges Canadian football still going, I mean,

(10:31):
if you're a but I don't.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
But I don't know how much people are really in
tune with the rules of Canadian football. People don't know
the rules of most of the pro games they're watching
from the United States.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
When do we go for two points? Let me look
that up. Oh really, that didn't go.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
No, it's the blackjack card you buy for ninety nine
cents in Vegas.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
I mean, you don't figured this out, so this is
I mean, they need and Ohio State's got the football
right now at their own forty yard line, it needs
to be goose eggs. If it's goose eggs the rest
of the way, yeah, well, any score thirty four to fifteen,
that'll do it. Because you're right now, you're talking about
Notre Dame getting two scores and two point conversions and
shutting Ohio State out. And that's a really difficult thing.

(11:12):
And as I say this, Notre Dame just commits a
really bad penalty. Marcus Freeman is ready to throw up
on the sideline. It was a second and long for
Ohio State. Ohio State throws a screen pass and it
doesn't go and wow, one of the defensive linemen takes
two full steps and pushes Will Howard. Then plays dead

(11:36):
well Will Howard okay. Unlike Patrick Mahomes, Will Howard was
actually pushed and fell to the ground. It was an
awful penalty. It was two full steps. Obin takes two
full steps before he pushes Will Howard, who goes to
the ground. It is a fifteen yard penalty and now
a first down for Ohio State on the Notre Dame
forty seven yard line, like they're one play away from

(11:59):
getting the football back. I get your And that's the
thing is, I get your frustrated. I understand. I understand
what's been going on all game and you're losing a boy.
You just want to put a hint on a guy that's,
you know, one pass away from having a perfect day.
I get it, I get it. But when you're two
steps away, you can't. You can't go after him. I mean,
you didn't even get a good hit him. So much
daylight on him, but it was a shove. It's like

(12:21):
it's not even a good hint. Yeah, but you can't
do it.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
You can't.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
No, No, it's a terrible it's a terrible decision. I'm
just saying, like the frustration that you talk about the
greatness that we've seen from this Ohio State offensive line
taking care of business and running the lot of scrimmage
has been there is all night long, uh, chunk yardage
on run plays and obviously Howard working from a clean pocket.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
You're frustrated that you haven't gotten there. Guess what, you
didn't get there either, because you didn't It's not like
you were one step away and then you drilled him.
But if you're gonna take the fifteen yard penalty, you
might as well go, you know, get get to the
rib cage at that point, step of a half ass
shove to where he goes to the ground. But it's
plain as day.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
I always think, point, I see what you did right there,
plain as days he did. I mean I always think, well,
eventually at some point defensive players is gonna understand, Hey,
can't can't go after the quot Yeah yeah, yeah, no, no, no,
it's still gonna happen, still gonna happen, Still gonna go
after it's still gonna do it. I know you can't,
still gonna do it, but I only touched him up.
Still good enough, Still gonna do it. Wow, Exit out

We have the AFC NFC Championship games coming up this week,
and we talked about him. He's pesky game ever. Big
week in coaching? Maybe sure? Yeah, Look, I mean you
have Hawk guys just won a game in the Big ten.
It's all good. Pete Carroll is coming back, sure, Robert
Sala's a d C. Matt Eberflus has a gig, the
League of Disappointing Head Coaches. Everybody's coming back around again.

(14:39):
So let's give you our official picks for this weekend.
Let's start with the Commanders and the Eagles. The latest
injury news today, Jalen Hurts is gonna play with a brace,
but he seems like he's gonna be okay. And I'll
tell you this, it's not gonna matter. It's not gonna matter.
I can't pick Washington because the formula for them to

(14:59):
win is not gonna be there. They need a bunch
of turnovers and they need chunk plays on offense, both
of the things they were able to find against the
Lions all throughout the game, right, chunk plays on offense
because the Lions defense looked the Lion Yet. Was the
Lion's defense ever really great? No, it was better than
it was. They had a lot of injuries, and at

(15:20):
the end, clearly you saw they couldn't stop anybody. They
couldn't stop the Commanders at all. And the Commanders just
have okay weapons outside of Jayden Daniels, who probably is
the MVP of the NFL this year. But they're also
not going to get the turnovers like they got. Goff
is not going to give them the football. This is
not a a Lions team that is going It's not
like the Lions, where hey, we're gonna throw it up

(15:40):
and down the field, and if you can scheme us
up a little bit, guess what, we'll give you the football.
The Eagles are gonna run the ball all day because
they can. You can only scheme up so much stuff.
But they're gonna give the ball to Saquon Barkley. He's
gonna have another big day, and they're going to control
the football a lot. They're not gonna give it up
a lot like Detroit is, and they are content playing

(16:01):
that style. The Eagles are gonna say, we're okay, we
know it's gonna be closer than people expect. People well,
here's hey, we know that Jayden Daniels threw for five
touchdowns last time. They're gonna control the football and it's
gonna be a boring game because Hurts is not really
gonna be dynamic. And that's kind of the thing now.
They lean so much on Barkley and the offense that
it's not gonna be a point where hey, Hurts is

(16:22):
gonna rescue everybody throwing the football. Number one, he's two
banged up to be the real Jalen Hurts. But number two,
this is how the Eagles are gonna win this game.
But mainly the Eagles defense is so much better than
the Lions defense. Even with Daniel's five TV game, you
know they're gonna have something different. Vic Fangio is gonna
have something different dialed up for them. It's not gonna

(16:42):
be a fun ish watch. Points are gonna be at
a premium. Philadelphia has mastered the success with chaos, and
for the Commanders, that's been a magic carpet ride so far.
Look at how far they've gotten. They win a playoff game,
they go and beat the Lions, who hand them the
football continuously in the first half, and make mistake that
they didn't make all season long. It's been a great,

(17:03):
amazing run. And you don't want to count Jayden Daniels out.
But the Eagles are just a better, well rounded team.
They're a better team across the board. It's going to
be closer. It's probably a field goal game, but this
is a game where the Eagles find a way to
get ahead, or they kick the field goal at the end,
or they're up and their defense slams it and takes
it home. Give me the win for the Eagles, and

(17:26):
give me the under because again, not a lot of
points this game.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
The over unders sitting at forty seven. It's a lot
of points favored by six in this one.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
A lot of points.

Speaker 3 (17:36):
Yeah, it seems to me this is where it bogs
down a little bit again owing to the Jalen Hurts injury.
And you know the full disclosure, there's there's part of
me that wants the organized chaos that comes with the
Commanders winning this game and all that falls out in Philadelphia,
from a misspelling mayor to just the ongoing saga that

(17:58):
is Nick Sirianni. Actually, if the offense fails and Jalen Hurts,
referendum on him, all of those things that go through.
But I picked the Eagles before the season. I can't
jump jump off him now, right. I got two of
the final four teams alive. I can't quit on them
at this point. Looking for Barkley to have a big
day behind that offensive line and for the defensive front

(18:20):
of Philly to do just enough. Jayden Daniels, for all
his heroics, will still take the inopportune sack at times.
And it's been the year of living dangerously, a lot
of great fantastic finishes, final possessions. I don't even think
I get that opportunity here here. It's going to be
whether Saquon Barkley or Kenneth Gainwell in his stead are

(18:42):
sliding down at the eight to chew clock at the
end of the game. I like what Quinn and Kingsbury
and everybody have done. Terry McLaurin, zach Ertz, you name him,
roll call him here. It's been a fantastic run. But
it ends here. A couple of weeks ago was just
up all right, it was a tune up. They didn't

(19:02):
need the game, didn't want the game. Whenever, Now it's
winning time. Eagles take care of business at home.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
Yeah, I mean they would need the commanders would need
some sort of some sort of like last week, Like
what do I always say when I pick games, Hey,
this is gonna happen now. Doesn't mean a team can't
turn the football over a ton and all of a
sudden you get one of those games. But you don't
really plan for that. What's exactly what happened last week?
Like if the Lions don't turn the ball over that way,
but look they scored thirty one points, they still didn't

(19:29):
get close. Right, The defense couldn't stop them. But the
turnover set the tone of the game, like, are the
Eagles really gonna do that? Are they gonna put the
ball on the carpet four times? Is it Hurt's gonna
throw two picks and Barkley's gonna fumble twice? I don't
see it. Are they gonna be able to go up
and down the field? And suddenly the Eagles defenders are
pointing at each other, going what the hell is going on?
And Howie Roseman's coming out of the stands dressed as

(19:51):
a grim reaper ready to fire Nick Sirianni as soon
as the clock heits triple zeros. I can't see that happening.
I could see it a little bit with the Lions,
but still a real surprise. I really can't see it here.
You know each other, they know each other too well. Again,
it'll be closer if if I want to say, the
Commanders with the points, because six and a half points
is a lot of like the the Eagles like by

(20:12):
by three or four. That's why I like the under
a little bit more. But I mean I would be
I would be even more stunned than I was last week,
the way the Lions gave it up. If the Commanders
came out and actually won this game.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
Yeah, I was on the right side of that one
with my Washington upset special thereby meaning I can never
go have a muskrat dinner.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
But that'll be okay. I'll survive. No, that's all right.
My family hates you. It's mice family. No, I mean
it's eleven years running.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
I mean that is well, they had no opinion of
you until you started picking against them.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
Then now suddenly they have something.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
Oh and then I took their coach. Yeah, now I'm
going to take half of their Well they're mad at
me too because we took their coach too. You and
I took both of their coach. And now Antoine Randol's
going to Chicago and maybe a couple other guys from
the staff, all of that rolling up. Look, Washington's been
a fun story. We've talked about it a lot, and
Jaden Daniels has been magnificent in spots you put up.

(21:10):
You know, your thought of Hey, if you added these
these first rounds of the playoffs, would would you reconsider
you know, your MVP vote at this point And we
got some great feedback. Keep it coming at Swollen Dome
at how about a fresco at Fox Sports Radio wherever
you get your podcasts and and where you're wherever you
interact with the show and the network. We appreciate you
that you're doing so, and he's been great. But I

(21:31):
think it ends here Philadelphia at home and the defense,
even with the attrition because they've lost a couple of
key component parts in that front seven. Who's stopping Jalen
Carter coming off the edge to get to get after
Jaden Daniels the way he's running right now.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
I don't think it happens.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
And you've got, you know, a hawk guy in the
defensive backfield as a nominee for for Defensive Rookie of
the Year.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
I mean, who would have thunk it? I mean, well,
Hawke gys and defense. You think it would be something
if hey, this offensive rookie from Iowa is gonna win.
It would be a tight end at all tight end
or a linebacker, yeah, or a kicker or a kicker
if it's you know, hey, here's why are you doing
that at the Crossberg. It's Friday, it's a it's an
era of positive vibes.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
And then would you immediately bring up a kicker, which
means he's gonna have pictures of cating in his head.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
It we've been we've been toasting to the Cowboys being
worse than our teams all night. Now apparently that toast
is over. Well, you know it happens. It's okay, I'll
take it.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
Someone else will clank a glass, so you'll have to
pick it right back up.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
It's a exit out about a Fresca exit swollen down
the Jason Smith's with Mike Carment, so both of us
have the Eagles to the Super Bowl. You know I'll
go this. I'll say twenty to fourteen. I'll not say
that the commander the Commander's cover, but I'll go twenty
to fourteen. That's the how do you e E L

(22:56):
E L G S E S eldessis elvisis win the
eldes win. I guarantee you that'll be a chant on Sunday.
I guarantee you will hear that they will. They will
have the Mayor's back and have the E L G
S E S chant five six beers in And that's
always the chance.

Speaker 4 (23:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
And if the Eagles are smart, and they'd be selling
T shirts, hats and everything they could in the team's store.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Dude, five or six beers in for Eagles fans. That's
like four hours before this game game talking about man.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
That's now we're getting in the hot damn and the
fire firesider with the vinegar in it, and.

Speaker 1 (23:32):

Speaker 1 (24:07):
Let's get to the AFC Championship game, right We we
talked about the NFC game. Both Mike and I like
the Eagles to win to move on AFC. If the Bills,
if I was more confident in the Bills defense. I
picked the bills. I feel like I do this now. Hey,
I'd like to, but I just can't. It's like me saying,

(24:28):
I like your thoughts in theory. I just if I
thought Buffalo because they're gonna need to stop the Chiefs
and their defense just isn't good enough. It's it's the
Chiefs are gonna do what they need to do right,
and this this has all the harmmarks have yet I
know that we've said, hey, this is gonna be the
year that Josh Allen breaks through, just because at some

(24:49):
point he's got to. I'll keep picking the bills, and
I get it. But what are we seeing from the Chiefs, right?
I mean other than you know, the the the the
officials making great calls in their favor, right, Like Travis
Kelcey is like a latter day Roger Clemens right the
end of his career, Clemens was playing half a year
coming up. Yeah, I'm here at the end when you
need me. Like there's Travis Kelcey. I'm invisible for the
regular season, but then near the end, Hey, look at me. Now,

(25:11):
sudden I'm an all pro. Wow, all of a sudden,
it's back to being Travis Kelcey. It's a big deal,
you know, having his best for now. In the fourth quarter,
the Chiefs are gonna do what they always do. They're
gonna get the points they have to get because it's
what happens. To win in Kansas City. You need to
be great. You need to be great to be able
to pull off a win like this. The last time

(25:32):
a team won it was the Bengals Super Bowl team.
They did everything you need to do offensively, defensively, they
held them back. Buffalo is terrific. But are they great enough?
Is the defense great enough to cause problems for Patrick
Mahomes as the offense starts to really pick things up.
I don't see it. It's still a back and forth game.
But I've seen the movie of the fourth quarter of

(25:55):
Chiefs games all year too many times. I've seen the
Chiefs always find a way to get past the Bills
or whoever else they're playing. And again, if the Bills,
if I could say, well, if the Bills had the
Eagles defense, I could say, oh man, watch out, this
is that big upset. But they don't. So in the
fourth quarter, the Chiefs will make the plays. Mahomes will
make the plays. Maybe he's the beneficiary of roughing the

(26:16):
passer penalty when he's not even in the game. But
it's something. It's something like that. They will make all
the plays they need to. It will be another close one.
I'll take the over in this one, like the under
in the NFC title game, but I like the over
in this game. Give me the over, give me the Chiefs,
and we got the Chiefs and the Eagles back in
the Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
Chiefs two point home favorite. Forty eight and a half
is your total in this one, mister Smith. Once again,
I can't go against my preseason pick. I've got it
luck with them. Got very lucky to have my preseason
picks still alive. Maybe I'll get the MVP right, even
if votes and other forums would say I don't. But

(26:54):
I picked Buffalo to win the AFC before we started,
so we'll stay there. The loss of Taylor rap and
the secondary is certainly not boting well, particularly the way
Travis Kelsey has been playing of late, finding his way
to tiptoe through the tulips. I e a wide open
middle of the field.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
These last couples, they just have a big red circle
over that area. Now with that news today, hey, wait
a minute. Wait, yeah, here's a big circle. We're gonna
be here all day.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
You know that little route that Travis likes to start
and then he usually ends up drifting about eight yards
this way. That's probably gonna be open for us a
few times here on Sunday, So that one's problematic. Milano
being back and covering the ground that he does certainly
a help, but looking offensively, can you get a ground
game going early with Cook and then who's stepping up

(27:46):
in the passing game the tight ends? Maybe Keon Coleman's
got a shot down field. Certainly Khalil Shakir moved those chains,
but I'm expecting a bunch with Josh Allen taking the
hit and going and moving the ball with his legs.

Speaker 4 (28:03):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (28:03):
And then you get a slight advantage to bass. Yes,
the bassomatic uh is going to have to be big
in this one. Uh, him greater than Butker at least
for one day. Just don't let it go to the judges, right.
You left it up saying hey, there'll be a call
or there'll be something U chickanery and people going, oh no,
we're losing our minds again.

Speaker 1 (28:25):
But you know that's one thing I think there's so
much attention on it now that I think officials are
wary of blowing that whistle when they're not sure they
see something. So I don't know that they're gonna get
those calls even though I know it's I know it's
in Burrowhead, I get it. But there's so much more
those calls. I don't know. Man, have you ever watched
The chief I do, But there's just so much attention

(28:47):
on it now. I always has been. Only only in
the movies. Can you say, hey, hey, the you know,
here's these charismatic bank robbers. They keep robin banks. We're
gonna watch this bank and they still are able to
get away with it. Like it's gonna be really difficult
for that to happen. I mean, it's gonna the officials
not going in. Yeah, if we're really not sure we
see it, we can't blow the whistle. I think you're

(29:10):
gonna see some You're gonna see some controversial penalties that
aren't called. But in the end, it's the Chiefs and Arrowhead.
I'm gonna work.

Speaker 3 (29:17):
I'm gonna work to find the referee stats as we
go down deeper into the show tonight. But I do
have one off the jump underdogs ten and three against
the number with Cleate Blakeman in playoff games.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
Yeah, but it's actually Scott Foster who's officiating. If you
know that. Yeah, whoa the league call they're sending him.
I don't know if you know that, but he's doing
the game. Yeah, good luck. You really just kind of
took things in a weird direction.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 1 (29:52):
Well, we have an NFL audible right now, and this
is the best possible audible you could possibly have. Joining
us now in the hotline forever, everything you want to
know going into this weekend AFC and NFC Championship, all
the big coaching hirings NFL on Fox's Jay Glazer. He
joins us now, and Jay, thank you so much. Once again.
I heard you got evacuated from your home again. Everything okay,

(30:15):
your family?

Speaker 4 (30:16):
No, no, no, we didn't get evacuated. Okay, we lost power
again and so we had to leave. Yeah, but we're good.
We're great, you know, man. We are literally across the street.
You saw this weekend we got football games for all
the fire firefighters across like Zoomer Beach, fifty four hundred
of them. So we I would say, we have the

(30:37):
safest hoff in Malibu because there's fifty four hundred firefighters
across the street or whatever. There's this strong wins. They
turned power off. So we got back in to our home.
It's Friday, and then we've our power has been turned
off two or three of the days since. I was like, ah,
we're going back to a hotel, but we're good man.

(30:59):
Then we go to Philadelphia and uh, they'll get ready
for the otherson Championship gym. I never I never thought
I'd say, Man, I can't wait to go to five
degree Philly. Be there that have my power turned off
my house?

Speaker 1 (31:12):
I will as you're getting there. Now you're getting ready,
you know, bring a warm coat. Uh when you take
a look at this game.

Speaker 4 (31:19):
Most people don't know this by way. My first college,
which I got kicked out of the semester and a
half was outside Phillies Westchuester University of Pennsylvania, and I
boxed for them, and I got kicked out the day
boxing season ended for quote unquote discipline reasons. But I
don't know how that's defined.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
But whatever, Well, is that a story you can tell
or a story you can't tell?

Speaker 4 (31:44):
Well, several things I do wrong?

Speaker 3 (31:45):
So why are they bringing it back for the honorary
degree though? Now?

Speaker 1 (31:50):
Jay, come on, yeah, well I look at it. I know, Jay,
You're already in trouble because I saw you on Twitter
this week. Hey, I'm getting in trouble for being on
Twitter while I'm day drinking with Rosie. Like, so, I
think you're in trouble. Get off Twitter?

Speaker 4 (32:03):
Got thing, you know? I I you know, obviously I
reported Kevin O'Connell was there were teams that were interested
in training for them and they weren't. I know, teams
even reached out to the Vikings and it was an
interesting situation. People suddenly looked at it like, oh, uh,
Jay's trying to sabotage uh the timing of his report it.

(32:24):
You know, he sabotaged the Vikings by putting it out
the day of the game. I work at Fox NFL Sunday,
and I worked from Fox and Felt Tuesday Sunday, so
that's on my reports on And I also don't work
at Twitter so I put my stuff. I say stuff
for Sunday. Sometimes I say it for a week, two weeks,

(32:45):
sometimes it's two days. And I've always done a lot
that my whole career, because you know, I'm I'm holding
to fans watching Fox, foxing about Sunday. A lot more
people going to see us on Fox, they are gonna
see me on Twitter or somewhere else, And it's like,
I also want to have the best information. I want
people to know if we're watching Fox about Funday, Gladier's
gonna have some bombshell or something that's so inside nobody

(33:09):
else asks. And I did that day, and I just
got the kind of crush for it. I'm like, I
did my job. I'm telling you they see is on
the teams and with multiple teams, and then people are
like trying to figure out my sources OSS agents. A
lot of the days, I don't really talk to agents,
and I have always kind of made more of a
habit talking to players and coaches and not agents, so
I don't so I can't get used. You know, I'm

(33:32):
honest with the players and coaches, and I just go
by my job differently than I think a lot of
the other insiders, and in this case, I had heard
it directly from a handful of teams that hey, they
knew that Kevin was in a situation where he wasn't

(33:52):
happy with what happened was with then not coming to
the thro City contract. They still hadn't come to his contract,
should make a run at him, And they were smart
because it was this. I do think the report helped
kind of kick everybody in the butt, say let's let's
make sure these guys always happy to me and here,
and because if they didn't, he could have just said, listen,

(34:16):
I'm not going to resign here. You might as well
get get from me what you can. And that's all
I was reporting was that's what was going on behind
the scenes. My job is to give people an idea
and an inside look of what's going on behind the scenes.
And you know, I would dy drinking with Rosie, so
I'm gett a little.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Busy saboteur is what they tried to call him.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
He's Jay Glaizer, our buddy joines each and every week,
Jay me being the resident Chicago kid on the network.
I gotta say my eyes were really wide when I
got the notice that Ben Johnson was going to the Bears.
How did this, you know, come to fruition surprise Dan Campbell,
how does he take it? I mean, what what's the
fallout here?

Speaker 4 (34:59):
Yeah, you know it's interesting. You know one thing Dan
Cambell and I talked to me yesterday. I just got
to kind of look at to like McVay mave is
always losing people and he just reloads right, same thing
as a hunter, because you got to be the culture builder.
Now you're assistance. You're the culture builder, and you've got
to coach people how you do it, how you want
it done, your way. And I've had the same talk

(35:20):
with Sean Payton. He gets upset with certain assistance and
I'm like, hey, man, you're the culture builder. You don't
say how you want them to coach it. And you know,
it's why guys like Dan Campbell, who coached Undersell Payton
end up being really good. And you know the other
part of this too is I'm pretty sure Chicago did
not expect be try to lose. So you know, one

(35:42):
of the things I know, like you know, I've reported
the other night a little shocking news by Eddie George
that he was going to go. But you want to
make sure awake. I'm not just a Rooney rule to comply.
And they're like, no, they're going to interview. You know,
I know Brian Flores who saw the list to bring
back to bring in somebody else. It wasn't that was
their intention. But because they did Eddie George, they're like, oh,

(36:05):
we could jump on this guy now, and but then
they just looked at it, and you know, the interesting
things could be for Ben. I like Ben. But the
interesting interesting thing is Caleb doesn't just need a guy
to come up a really cool place. Caleb needs a
guy to develop them. All right, I want to see
what and I will say that then do a really

(36:25):
amazing job with Jared up. It's not just calling place
for Jared, because other things involved a lot of other things.
He did such an amazing job getting I mean, Jared's
technique is phenomenal. Just getting the right place for Jared
for him to see things the right way, done a
great job with it. And I like the staff he's

(36:46):
put together. You know, I think they're going to I
know they're going up to Darren Rizzik's big Dennis allenal
you know, end up being the defensive coordinator. But you
know it'll be really interesting and you know the finally
think of the pressor like why are you thinking a
fight with Matt lafore before? What are you doing here?
And I asked Matt yesterday like do you know him?

(37:06):
He's like no, I'm know them at all. I'm like, well,
you're not boys.

Speaker 1 (37:09):
He's like, no, you guys aren't boys.

Speaker 4 (37:14):
No, not at all, dude. So you know I told
you like we have this day drink and day of
the owners. Be like, it's just like me and all
the head coaches. I can't wait for it now.

Speaker 1 (37:23):
Oh yeah, hey, you got to make sure you record
a special episode of the podcast. When that's going on.

Speaker 4 (37:32):
Episode of the podcast, you get me out and building
a cager out of it. I'm refereing.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
There you go, Jay Glazer with Us, Jason Smith, Mike
Harmon Life the tireg dot com Studios. All right now,
the other big opening filled a day ago. And it
looks not often that my Jets do something right. But
I think my favorite quote about Aaron Glenn, because I'm
excited about it and everything he's bringing back, was what
you said about him. I've known ag since he was

(37:56):
a rookie and always played like he wanted to punch
you in the mouth. And I think that's exactly what
the Jets need right now.

Speaker 4 (38:03):
Yeah, absolutely so does his defense right. The thing about Age,
because he was so undersized, he was so explosive four
three five or three three something like that. He'll probably insulted,
but sure, up to him, it's like a four two
eight or whatever. But he was so explosive. But he
didn't want to be treated but like like as like

(38:25):
a small, fast guy. He wants to be treated like
he's a big physical corner. So that's wh he played,
you know. And Tom Brady and I were having to
talk about it, and Brady's like, man, I learned that
fast about that guy, Like I learned not to go
after him. That's pretty cool. He would say that about it.
This is like earlier in the year. We were talking
about the games. So he was like, yeah, I learn man,

(38:45):
I learned earlier on like, don't go after that gat
and he's gonna he's gonna he's an act like he's
in a fight, gip, Like when he's the way he covers,
the way he plays everything, and you just saw like
they were decimated on defense. And when I'd love to.
Like halfway through the years, some of his players were like, hey,

(39:06):
we were a bunch of savages, and I'm like, oh
my god, that is music to my ears to have
his players saying coach says, we're savages about Aaron and
I love that.

Speaker 3 (39:19):
So, Jay, have you been blamed down in Tampa for
Liam Cohen's situations?

Speaker 1 (39:24):
Usually? I mean from the Buccaneers fans.

Speaker 4 (39:28):
No, No, I always get it. Blame though, for the
uh for being the other Blazer Manchester United Manchester you yeah, right, yeah, yeah,
So I'm good. You know, That's that's thinglish people, not
good came of people. The Liam thing man is a
little a little interesting because actually we're making him yesterday
made him hives paid offense coordinator of the NFL, and

(39:49):
one day later he goes and does this, and you know, I,
I don't know, you can't say this for sure, but
I'm pretty sure. Like Ben Johnson was was like a
lot of a lot of people in the LEAs thought
he was gonna go to Jacksonville, but we all knew
he wasn't gonna go there. Trent Balkis was there, and

(40:09):
Trent Malcoms, the coach Killern guys around. He got four
coaches fired or how do I say this? So he
didn't try, sup, try sue me, but he got four
coaches fired, and uh general managers Dave Calwell, And you
know he's part of it. I should say, he's just
he's yeah, he's Uh. You can't really trust him if

(40:30):
you're sitting there going, man, he's got always all four
of these coaches on his watch room fires and a
general manager Dave Colwell. So I remember when they were
when they were first saying that they're going to keep them.
People all around the league are like, well, they just
lost out most of their tendidates. Says, no one's going
to go there with them. He's a really good personnel guy,
good eyes. But man, there's not a lot of trust

(40:54):
or or like for Trent Balkim in this league. And guys,
you know me, I don't talk like this normally on
the show, but I call let me know how it is.
And when you get four head coaches fired on your
watch and one gm M, and you know, if a
walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, I would
think that they realized, man, people are not going to

(41:16):
go there. So the Bucks making the Ice paid offensive
coordinator and then they fire Trump Balcon Hampshire called back
said okay, well we'll bring you back in here and
you can bring a personal guy with you. And that
just became too.

Speaker 1 (41:31):
You know, to to.

Speaker 4 (41:33):
To attractive. The pass up for Liam. And by the way,
Liam is you know, Liam's really good. It's really good coach.
He actually lived with McVeigh for a little bit out here.
One was that Rosie w Yeah, Rosie three years ago,
two years ago, I think two or three years ago

(41:56):
for getting Yeah, he lived in mc veigh and and
uh and and really got to learn under song like
first and which is what you want? Not just in
the office.

Speaker 1 (42:08):
NFL on Fox Insider Jay Glazer and Rosie the NFL
on Fox Insider. Uh, now, hey, because it's a baby.

Speaker 4 (42:16):
There's one. There's one thing real quick I'm I'm not
gonna say with the story is but it's pretty bad.
And I'm at Sewan South last year. Now Dave, we're
going the quarterback coach. He stays with Sean this year
right and there, and like we're doing stuff like draft
work and stuff. We're just sitting there, Rosie sitting by leg.
So I'm not gonna say, what is We said, Rosie,
look this up for us whatever, and she just looks

(42:39):
it up and says she looks at the three of
us and goes, this is what you freaking guys do
on drafts. Exactly what we do. Like we're gossiping. You know,
we're gossiping about people and stuff. Rose She's like, I
thought you guys talking about college players. No, not at all.

Speaker 1 (43:00):
Boy, all right, So hey, Jay finally here. You know, hey,
it's been a big week for coaching obviously, and yes
we talked about the Bears and they're big hire for
Ben Johnson. Uh on the uh your new podcast on
the Unbreakable Mental Wealth podcast, you have another big hire
by the Bears on this week.

Speaker 4 (43:14):
Oh no, it's not a hire. He's in there. Did
he come off somebody else that have came off like like,
actually he just got a hire. He's been there. But
I thought, I said, nod to see this. I want
to make sure I do this the right way. Yeah,
I said, uh, let me just see her do suckle
berry big. Sorry, So.

Speaker 3 (43:38):
Drink Piper on where's Rosie, Let's get the reel and said,
where's Rosie?

Speaker 1 (43:42):
We need we need Rosie Rosie's got to help us
out here with this.

Speaker 4 (43:46):
But they have I said, they've also had an innovative
hire have had and higher on the staff that most
don't know about. Is that did I Is that clear enough?

Speaker 1 (43:57):
It's clear, but but I could see where it's like, Hey,
if you don't know about it means he's kind of new,
So I can see that. But no, but you had
you had the right punctuation, the right words and everything.

Speaker 4 (44:06):
Jay right Verba, Yeah, anyway, yeah, but yeah, he is
a mental performance coach. He's a retired colonel from the army.
He is man and he got me, guys, he has
He got me to open up on this podcast about
stuff I normally don't know put up about and walked
me short and helped me short and I'm like, and
the whole thing. He's like, hey, number one, just be

(44:27):
one of his mental performance coach. You got to be
a dude. He's got to get these guys to feel
comfortable talk to you. And you know, I've told you guys,
there's like, man, you go to a team training room
and strength room. Between the two of them, you got
fifteen you know, strength coaches, trainers, doctor all that the NFL.
You're only required to have one mental health professional on
site three days a week. The tip to the Bears

(44:50):
were smart, but by making him, you know, higher, I
don't know how long you got hired, but you know,
the big thing is, like he said, I'm talking with
Keenan Allener or Mercedes Lewis or Caleb Williams only things
about getting trust, and this guy was, you know, twenty
minutes catch me spilling my guts about stuff to a

(45:11):
national audience. I probably I did once with Michael Phelps,
but I don't talk about a lot because it's something
that I'm ashamed of when I lash out and on
my mental health issues and really worked me through. But
there's a lot of other things also, just like you know,
how he coaches these players, and everybody's different how he
coaches different people, but he learned in the military, what
he learned through his old struggles. There's a really cool thing.

(45:32):
So I think the Chicago Barriers are smart to have
a guy like this on their staff, and I hope
other teams follow and then I hope they follow up
by not just having won, by having the same amount
that you have for the physical part of it. I
think you know what I need. I think within the
next ten years they'll have the same amount or you know,
mental coaches as well.

Speaker 1 (45:50):
You can check out the podcast the link on Jay's
Twitter page at Jay Glazer. That is at Jay Glazer
or Unbreakable a Mental Wealth podcast, wherever you get your
podcast from Jay. Always keep fighting the good fight.

Speaker 4 (46:01):
Man.

Speaker 1 (46:01):
Thanks, we'll talk to you soon. See your buddy, so
travels buddy, be good.

I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
