(00:50):
you it was in the script for hour three. He
was just early huh, happy President's Day. Yeah, although you
got like, like Lincoln gets two days now, right, because
Lincoln had last week and now Lincoln also gets tonight,
like Washington's gonna want another day too, now, Like wait
a minute, why does Lincoln get to I was the
first one I know Hamilton. When he's not in Hamilton,
I need an extra Day. But when it falls on
(01:10):
the seventeenth, does it become Jordan Day instead? Uh? Yeah, yeah,
probably yeah, sure, why not just go all the way
through Michael Jordan Day instead of uh, well, I'll work
I mean, look, I'll work on another holiday in holiday
holiday holiday in February. You know, well, let's let's work
on the president's first Well, what's tomorrow's holiday? Probably National
Donut Day. Let's see national celebrated on its National drink
(01:37):
wine Day? Is it really?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:39):
What about that? I know some people that's every day.
I know a lot of people that's every day. That's it.
I think they go a little stronger every day. Pour
one out for your picture. Oh hey, hey, speaking guys. Ready,
you guys ready. I can't believe we should do this
right now because I can't believe this. We're going to
talk about the no no, no, no, no, no, to talk
about favorite wine. No no, no, We'll get to we
get to big NFL story coming up in a second.
(01:59):
But as I said, as you know, my wife and
I you know, my wife does trivia every Wednesday night, right,
and sometimes do when he got good sports question trivia? Right,
and I always give you the big sports question she
goes to trivia. Well they trivia, trivia, Yeah, trivia. She
goes to trivia. I go to trivia. I went. You
know she does is we do these questions all the time, Frostburg.
It's like your tight shirt. Before I didn't know. We
talked about nuts ferritue. We did what we did. Maybe
(02:21):
she's just going away for a couple of hours, so
watch a real team play exactly. She's going to watch
Michigan highlights from twenty twenty three. And so last night
we found the there's a trivia night on Sunday nights.
That became to We went last night and we killed,
we won, going away, We just we just we blew
the doors off everybody. My dad was fantastic. He knew
like my dad was on fire. He was on a
(02:42):
heater last night. Man Walt was just is no, no, no,
it was okay. Well, the question was and this question
is asked, Aaron had to be careful in the fifth Animals,
what is a female donkey called? But that goes? Oh
writes it down Jenny really yes, how abu? Should we
bet all of it? Okay? Like my dad, like he
was just on fire last night. But there was one
(03:04):
he knows as he knows. Yeah, And I go, how
have I not? And I said to Pam, I go,
We've been like really close with her aunt Jenny for
like our entire lives. Wait, and that's usually my fun
line with her. And I was expecting someone younger, and
she said, so was I. But I go, how did
I not know a female donkey was called a jenny?
Speaker 2 (03:20):
How have we not?
Speaker 1 (03:21):
I've been in this family for twenty five years to
be keeping a secret for me? Because that's all I'm
gonna run with her now is is that he's a Jenny.
But there was one sports question that was that was
that was pretty big. We waged a lot on it.
We got it right, and it was all thanks to
the kid. So I'll give it to you. Guys. See,
if you get kid, you should get it. You should
get it. Well, let me ask, har'mon, I'll ask the
(03:43):
saga and I'll ask. I mean to tell you and
probably ready so uh. This popular book was subtitled the
Art of Winning an Unfair Game? What is the book?
And right away I said, give me the pen? Got it?
Bet at all? The Art of Winning an Unfair Game?
(04:05):
Huge sports book? Huge sports book. Wow, do you guys
get it right away? Wow? Reason is like one you
can't even guess on the name of the book is
title The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Actually run
the Actually, they made this book into a movie and
they run that line in the movie. It's an unfair game. Wow, Wow,
(04:27):
unfair and fair, unfair? How to win a really fair game?
The art is playing the art of winning an unfair game.
I started thinking about agents, especially if you're a Nuts fan.
It's very unfair. Jerry McGuire. It's not Jerry mcguiberg's book.
It was the book Jerry maguire who came out. Yeah,
(04:47):
I gotta guess, go ahead, Moneyball? Who just yelled money
I heard Moneyball from two different people yelling to you.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
The guy who wouldn't know it, that's who I can't
I can't count that.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
I heard Ty Shirt yell at, and I heard Brandon
yell or Irdon. I can't count that you guys. You
guys are all eliminated. I heard the moneyball twice, okay, Mike,
and I guess moneyball. Yeah, it's very good Steve to
say this job. Wow, how did he pat you to that?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Unfair in the sense of Major League Baseball setup is unfair.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, Ben A's fan is very unfair. But it's about
the setup of being how the age. You know, they
don't have market with the rest of the other team.
So it was called moneyball, the art of winning an
unfair game. That's one that you reference all the time.
So I thought it was going to be a little
further off the beaten path, which is why I stumbling
all over the mouse. It was just I was like,
oh god it. They were like, really, yeah, give me
(05:39):
the pen. I got it right out. Whoa Okay, then
how about that? But that again, I always say there
is pressure in the world, and like and there's pressure
that when they go okay, the next question is in sports,
and everybody on your team just kicks back and looks
at you like you got it. I'm going to the bathroom,
I'm gonna order more food, like you got it. I'm like, oh, okay,
I gotta get it right. Yeah. But here it's just
like getting something wrong here, jove. Sports people survey did
(06:04):
not know. Did you put your hand up in the
air and slowly make a fist like Jonah, I did
the whole thing. You got it, Susan give me, Steve
Phillips h But no. But the thing I always do
the same thing. I go just be a sport that
I like some I'm more. The question is here, it
is what famous Formula one driver or like, okay, you
know what? You know what what four time tennis major
(06:26):
champion in the nineteen fifties, Stan Smith? I don't know,
Like that's no more. It's going to be something that
that sways movies and sports. Yeah, this happened twice. This
is right there. It was right in there. So winning
on fats and give me the pen. I got one driver.
Yeah yeah, oh very good. Michael Schumacher always be he
was a big winner for sure. Sure, very good, Yeah,
(06:47):
very good. Very good. For Daniel Valenzuela. Sure that's here soon.
Well he's doing so. I always go just be something
I know, just be something I know. Okay, good, I'll
give me winning an unfair game? Got it? You by
this point let down your family? There the only okay,
the only Now I don't go on Wednesdays when when
(07:09):
they go. But now the Sundays now we're like, now
we have to go because now we're the chance. We
had a ton of points last night. We like beat
the crap and we're like the Yukon of of this,
of this trivia. No, no, no, of the last two years,
of the last two yes, more against South Carolina. Where okay,
where Yukon We're No, I mean Yukon against South Carolina
this weekend. So who's Bobby Hurley? Who cries we're Saint
John's of this year? No, crist Uh, nobody cried my dad,
(07:32):
My dad and my dad cright. No.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
No.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
My dad got really mad at me because I kept
showing him stuff on my phone. Oh my dad, look
at this. It's a picture of Juan Soto from his
first Mets press conference. Ye, d look at this. Stop
showing that there's nice around the tables and the place
like Hurley. Yeah, no, he become red Holt. No no, no. Well,
the thing is, I think I really spurred my dad
on last night because I sent you guys. The text
(07:56):
message doesn't take much. So just to pull back the
story and we'll get to football story in a second.
I gotta tell you this. So my dad says, okay,
we're doing triviut tight. I I goes, hey, can you
send me the name of the restaurant. I want to
look up the menu. My dad want to know what
he gets. I said, yeah, sure, So I sent him
a text. I said, it's called go geo and then
you know blank but spelled differently. And then yourself you
(08:18):
are s E. L P H. Thinking oh, he's gonna
get it, and he writes back, I can't find it anyways,
and I said, Dad, google it there still open. He was,
go blank yourself with a PA and then I get back.
Then I just got back a middle finger from him,
(08:39):
like after he looks it up and realizes, oh man it.
I was so proud of myself. I saved the text.
You've been there for a long time, Walt. Just park
the car, Just put him park, turn the key off,
and turn the radio on. I love it. Then you
(09:00):
him a link to just a gift of a waiting
middle finger as you you just wait till he beats
you with both of Jim Carlos Stanton's arm socks, both
of his elbows. Is gonna beat me? Yeah? Oh Dad,
I'm afraid about that. You contact old Walt about that one? That? No,
I let him. I let him go with that. I
let my dad go with that because he was so
basking in victory. Yeah, I know, but I said I
(09:20):
didn't want him. I didn't want to be like a
soap opera where hey, you get a tiny win and
then suddenly all bad stuff happened. Soap opera characters like
I wanted to give. I mean, look, that's the next
six to eight weeks. But you've gotta have redemption. I mean,
that's what it is. Uh, redemption could be coming tomorrow
for Sam Darnold, But then again, it's probably not. H
The franchise tags are due and not a lot of
(09:42):
players in the NFL are expected to get them. For
all the complaining that people do over the franchise tag,
it's like, how much it's like complaining about the NBA
All Star Game? Do people really care that much? Like
every team, it's been eight years since we use the
franchise tag, five years. If he used the franchise tag,
one guy in the last nine years, franchise tag, that's
like the frequency of the Jets getting into the playoffs, Yeah, exact.
(10:02):
Well no, no, that's zero in the last thirteen years, so,
which I think is the last time he used a
franchise tec. So anyway, so the big name obviously is
gonna be Sam Dartle on this list tomorrow, right, and
is he going to get franchised? And two months ago
I would have said one hundred percent, the Vikings can't
lose this guy. Four thousand yard pass or thirty five touchdowns,
they can't do it. But his last two games were
(10:23):
so bad, right, the last game of the regular season
against the Lions, the playoff game, it was really really bad,
so bad that you listen to the Vikings talk. Now,
we've heard Kevin O'Connell head coach a couple of times
in the last a few weeks saying, Hey, we think
the world is Sam. We love JJ McCarthy too. There's
been no we're working on a contract. We're working on
(10:45):
keeping Sam. We want to keep him. He's a Viking.
We can't ignore what he did. It's been we love Sam,
but we love JJ McCarthy. It's I feel like they've
made their decision and they're going to allow him to
hit free agency. Now, maybe some kind of transition tag
where they could match or sign and trade and get something,
but really he's not staying. And I wouldn't be surprised
(11:06):
if tomorrow the Vikings just said, okay, we're to let
you go to free agency and then if if somebody
gives you a contract and we can match it and
we can keep you, maybe we will. But I don't
know that that's gonna happen. Just judging by the Vikings
everything changed. Maybe it changed because of the bad playoff games,
but now it seems like they're just gonna let him
go and he's gonna be able to go out there
(11:27):
and go to the raids where ever he wants to go,
sign a contract somewhere, and the Vikings are gonna say, okay,
now we're going on to JJ McCarthy. And quite honestly,
there's probably a bit of relief because the Vikings as
good as it as good a problem as it to
have to have Sam Donald play well well. The headache
is they still have their quarterback they drafted who was
on a rookie contract, and maybe he's great, and we're
(11:47):
just postponing the future till we play. We have to
play JJ McCarthy at some point, and while Sam Donald
is our starter, McCarthy's not getting the reps, he's not
going forward. We have to make this decision. If Donald
had played well at the end of the year, beats
the Lions, there's a big game against the Lions, big
game in the playoffs. They win a game, win a
playoff game, then it's almost impossible to say we got
to say goodbye to him. But it's almost like this
(12:08):
was the excuse where they're breathing a little bit of
a sigh relief, where like, boy, the end of the
season was terrible for us. We were fourteen and three,
but boy, really, you know, just stunk it up the
last two weeks and he was bad. This allows them
to make the decision of Okay, we can let you
go now. Don't have to worry about blowback, don't have
to worry about fighting a pr battle, have to worry
about losing the locker room. The players saying, why are
(12:28):
letting Sam Donald go? No, they saw the end of
the year he was really bad. So they're gonna use
those two games to turn the page to JJ McCarthy
and I fully expect tomorrow Donald's going to be a
free agent and we'll be talking about where his landing
spots are. Who's gonna wind up getting him. Does he
really want to go play for Tom Brady? Will he
go back to the Jets? Well, the Giants wind up
getting him. We had Jason locking four on earlier tonight saying, hey,
(12:50):
if the Rams move, Matthew Stafford, I think Sam Donald's
gonna wind up in LA Like that's what tomorrow is
gonna wind up being. Yeah, the curiosity of it all.
They've got a laundry list of guys heading to free agency,
do the do the vikings, so trying to figure out
how you allocate resources. Daniel Jones was there as you know,
a clipboard holder at the end of the year, and
(13:11):
from all reports with McCarthy was traveling with the team
and getting right you know where he was with verbiage
and and picking up you know what, what they were
doing in terms of game planning. But physically coming off
two knee surgeries. You keep telling me all you want
the second one, I was just clean up. It's like, no,
it's still a second surgery. It's still delaying him getting
(13:32):
back to training and putting his body weight back on,
getting the muscle mass and his legs, all of those
things that you need to do. It's also kind of
telling and and a lot of it of the you
know where we could we saw we we could reclaim
his career. We could do that again. So we don't
we don't need to pay this guy forty some odd
(13:53):
million dollars. So maybe a little bit of hubris finds
its way into the equation as well. But even if
you talk about the dollar cost averaging rookie deal versus
what Sam would make, you're still allocating an awful lot
of money to him for this year. If you bring
him back and the franchise tag, you're getting the average
(14:14):
of the top five salaries. It's not a bad way
to be yeah, right, And to take that into the
more universal side of things versus you're happy Trevor Lawrence
got that fifty five million elegant you're not being paid.
You know what you're gonna be mid whatever. You know,
we're gonna do the median and the mode and all
of that, and that's what you get. No, that's not
(14:35):
what they do. You get the average of the top five.
But for Sam Darnold, it's an awful lot of money
to commit. So giving yourself the opportunity to see what
the marketplace brings, because that would also potentially force things
for all these other teams to move rather swiftly over
the next week or two. As opposed to it dragging
out into March deep into marchin in April as we
(14:59):
get closer to the draft. Uh so for Sam Donald, Yeah,
am I giving him forty what is it forty five
or forty five million dollars next year? I think I'm saying,
go find the marketplace and then we go back and reevaluate.
We put McCarthy through as many stress tests as his
body can go through right now, and we reevaluate because
(15:20):
the rest of the marketplace sucks. Like we've talked about
that quite a bit. But if you think you can
find that second second chance Rogers the complete the trilogy,
come on, complete it by this time tomorrow. Tomorrow we'll
be talking about where are the best landing spots for
Sam Darnold Jack Jack? Yeah, you know what, I wouldn't
mind that of course now yeah, why not? Oh and
(15:43):
then he'll just stink when he comes back. That's okay,
could happen. It's signs Jack exit. How about a Fresco
swollen dome? Jason Smith Mike Carmon Live from the Tireck
dot Com studios. Yeah, what do you got? Maybe it's
not the quarterback, maybe it's the team. Oh what is
the team? Whatever? The Jets decide will be wrong. It
doesn't matter. Hey, they could bring Sam Donald back. That
would be wrong. They could decide not to bring him back,
(16:05):
that would be wrong. Whatever the Jets decide, it's wrong,
and we'll be here with you through it all, watching
you die a little bit with it every day. Your
big take the big takeaway from NBA All Star weekend.
That's different than what everybody's been spewing out today. Knee
jerk wise, that's coming up next right here, Jason and
Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon Live from the Tirack dot Com Studios,
and Happy President's Day, Happy Day after the NBA All
Star Game. Notice how no one says, hey, leave the
day after the NBA All Star Game to be a holiday,
like I need to recover from the NBA All Star Game.
We have to be that should be a national holiday. Well,
if you drank enough, you might have enjoyed it a
(16:58):
little more, but you probably slept well because you passed
out early. Yeah. Sure, I watch Steph Curry in his
twelve points win All Star Game m v P. Try that,
and I mean the three points shootout that's all start
Saturday night. I think just missed again. That was a
game watch man. Nobody can look. And that's the thing
(17:20):
all day and all the last few days. What have
you heard. You've heard crazy knee jerk reaction from people
who were just discovering the NBA All Star Game isn't
any good. Guess what. The NBA All Star Game hasn't
been any good for a watch, and and the and
the Pro Bowl is no good anymore either. It's not
even a game. It's just a bend's hey, we're gonna
(17:40):
try to win and try to throw a football through
a hoop here, and then you can try to win
a Papa shot. And then we're gonna try to throw
a ring on top of a bottle and win a
when a win a big duck like that's that's the
Pro Bowl. Now launch frauds. Then we'll go on the
tilted world and we're gonna go get get some nachos
and maybe some churos, like like the All Star Game
(18:01):
has been bad and you see the reaction it has been. Oh,
you're just discovering that, like it was slow weekend for you.
Like we knew going in the NBA All Star Game
was gonna be bad because it's been bad because the
All Star Game, its day has come and gone. It's
had its day. All Star games in the NBA, Major
League Baseball, they've had their day. We knew it was
(18:22):
gonna be bad. But maybe because the players decided to
really get vocal and how much they didn't like the
format yesterday because they didn't like the fact that they
had to sit around. They didn't like it. It was
smaller games. Just didn't like anything. I don't like it.
We want USA versus the world. Just seeing how well
it's working in foreign nations. That's we'll get to. And
then now today it's been over the top of the
NBA All Dadam Silver's alflets. I was like, whoa dude,
(18:44):
it's the All Star Game. It's not like the NBA
Finals got ruined. The NBA All Star Game was here
on Sunday and you forget about it. We move on
the next day. It's done. We hardly ever talked about
the All Star game. But now, because hey, slow weekend
and I don't know what else to come up with,
I'm gonna say, how how this is the worst thing
in the world. Nobody cares. The media cares more about
the NBA All Star Game than the fans do. Everybody
(19:04):
who watched, like you and I, we don't care. We
know what's gonna be bad. Watch it or don't watch it, right, Okay,
that's how I feel. I watch it, I don't watch it.
I watch a little bit of it, I go away,
I come back. I don't want That's the All Star Game, right,
That's what all Star games are. Watch it or don't
watch it, And the NBA just continues to try to
do what all star games need to do. Now, the
(19:24):
stunt casting of let's throw something up against the wall
and see what sticks, right, that's how we do it
with all Star games. This is not the worst thing
in the world. This is not the end of the end.
Even though Draymond Green is saying, how dare you have
rookies playing on a Sunday night, On a Sunday night,
he was so mad about it as sanctity. I mean, like,
ok okay, guys, you don't try you don't care. What
you really care about a Sunday night, really you really
(19:45):
care about If you cared, you'd play harder. But even
if they played harder, nobody would care. I mean, really,
just think about this. Do you really think if you
had a big memo forward from the NBA from all
the Stars going, I can't wait to play. I'm gonna
try really hard. Oh well, now I gotta watch. How
does that translate to eyeballs? It doesn't. If you add
Red Hulk playing in the All Star Game, I would say, Okay,
(20:06):
now I'm gonna watch. I want to see Red Hulk.
I want to see if Jokic can try to get
around Red Hulk. Like that's gonna get people. But just
saying oh people are, they're gonna try more. It's not
gonna be up and down and where where where This
final score is one ninety six to one eighty four,
and it's just no, no. All Star games have come
and gone. You have to try to find something that
people are going to hook into. And this is the
(20:27):
trial and error process that sports and different leagues have
been using for the past ten fifteen years and say, Okay,
what's gonna get people here? Okay, this idea might work
a little bit, so we'll stick with that for a
couple of years. Okay, that idea didn't work. Now we're
gonna go to something else. I remember when the NBA
tried horse. That's gonna be corgan to see all kinds
of crazy shots. No, no, no, it's gonna just people
(20:47):
on outside on rickety Rims shooting in the wind, like
what the hell is this? Man? So I mean, they
continue to try new ideas and eventually you'll find something
that works. But that's what the All Star Game is,
and and and whoever criticizes it, it's like, what do
you want it to be?
Speaker 3 (21:02):
What?
Speaker 1 (21:02):
What do you what's the solution? And everybody will say
the same thing. I don't know, just not that, Okay,
Charlie a two year old? What do you want for dinner?
Not this? But what do you want? Not this? What
do you want to watch on TV? Watch Carrious George? No,
I don't watch Curious George. Watch Dora? No, not Dora. Okay,
what do you want to watch? I don't know, but
not this, Like that's kind of what it is for
All Star games. Oh I don't like it? What do
you want? Tell me what you want and we'll try
(21:24):
to figure it out. But the complaining over it's like
you're really just overreaching. It's not a proportional response to hey,
we have a bad All Star game. Guess what, most
leagues have bad All Star games. So that's it, right,
from Durant criticizing it to Draymond giving it a zero
on a scale of one to ten, zero point zero
tends the best, then a zero. Charles Barkley said the
(21:45):
most interesting thing he said in a long time when
he clapped back in Draymond. It's like, it's, oh, you
guys fault, Like none of you guys wanted to play
in this. Yeah, right, you didn't want to participate in
any of the events and you don't want to play
in the game. But in the end, we have seen
these All Star games. When Kobe is playing, when Jeordan's playing,
the final score is one sixty five. But one these
games been going on like this for a long time.
Now suddenly now I don't like it. Oh that's just
(22:07):
good it right, like everybody's coming at last year there
were only three files, Like I'm not watching them for files.
I want to see free throws at the All Star
I see free throw. Yeah, but let's slow the game.
Do you if you said, hey, we're gonna make free
throws from the three point arc? Okay, that's kind of fun.
I've argued that forever, you know, Yeah, or you have
to stand with your back to the rim and shoot
over your head like that would be fun. See, that
would be fun. Now Steph Curry seven time MVP. But
(22:32):
all of that to say, uh, just the idea of
the game itself, long long has been disastrous for three
quarters plus and then all right, well we get a
higher bonus for winning the game, so we're gonna really
play for the final four or five minutes. Yeah, and
then you see some intensity come in. But we talk
about it all the time. And in terms of the
regular season, you got guys, look at Jahn Moran right
(22:54):
after Mac McClung wins, like, I might think about doing
this again, Okay, yeah, but he doesn't want to do
it in the right your season because talking about getting
hurt right and be stunked a couple of times, but
trying to figure out how to fix this. It's not
a matter of fixing it, it's finding where the acceptable
threshold is and recognizing nobody's going to be happy in
(23:16):
social media. Look, and I know that the NBA Adam
Silver his State of the Union was, here's a one
sheeter on everything we're doing internationally. Want to make sure
you get that point across doing great globally. In otherwise,
I don't care about your here's your talking points, make
sure you hit them all. Look, I don't care about
your television ratings because we got a seventy six billion
(23:36):
dollar bag. Right, that's really the And he can do
whatever Dance and Spike Movie wants to do after that,
because it really this doesn't matter as long as you're
keeping the sponsors happy, and guys keep showing up to
the host city. Oh wait, it's in LA. Next year,
they show up to the host city to do all
the engagements with sponsors, shake hands, kiss babies, and keep
(23:57):
the line moving. That's it. The game is inconsequential. Sure,
would you like it to be something that is more palatable,
But we're media people. We're never happy. No, but we're
not making anybody happy with this stuff. I like to
think we're a little different. So I'm not just here saying,
oh what are you playing? I have a solution, right,
and aeron a mannislush, no, no, no. And the solution is
(24:21):
continue to keep throwing stuff up against the wall because
eventually you're gonna find something that sticks. Because look at
this four Nations event that the NHL has going on
right now, pretty streat what's the biggest story in sports
over the last few days this four nation tournament? Right
the United States game against Canada on Saturday, where the
Canadians booed the United States national anthem because maybe we're
(24:41):
annexing Canada, maybe they're gonna annex California. Who knows. We
had three fights in the first nine minute, nine seconds
of the game. It was great, right. And the thing
about hockey is that this is the it's both good
and bad thing about hockey is that since Miracle on ice,
which still remains to this day the biggest strictly sporting
event of my life, lifetime and you were talking about
this is forty five years later, whenever it's the United
(25:04):
States against the world in hockey, everybody gets tunnel visioned.
It cuts through the clutter, becomes the biggest story out there.
The bad news for hockey is only when this happens
does hockey become a big story. But this has now
become a thing. This four Nations tournament has become We're
counting down to Thursday night now because Nited States has
a rematch against Canada. Canada wins to night. United States
lost the game that some of their best players didn't
(25:25):
tell it. They didn't have to win. They hit the post, yeah,
three times in the second period. It was a free game.
It didn't matter. They need to win. They were already
clinched a spot in the championship. And Thursday night, United
States Canada is it? Man, it's the biggest yeal exactly
see fear. It's a look at Frostburg. It's the big
flag right behind there. He's getting ready to run around
like he's Hacksaw Jim Duggan. And this is the NHL
(25:45):
who continued to throw stuff up against the wall to
try to see what sticks. And now this four Nations thing, whoa,
This has become a thing. Everybody cares about it. All
the nations want to be in this. This should be
the replacement for the All Star Game. I know they'd
said temporary. This should be how they do it every
year because every country is going to be into it.
You can still name players all Star and then just
(26:08):
put people on the national team. Yeah, Pro Bowl. Yeah yeah,
I'm a pro bowler. You're not gonna play in a game,
but you're a pro bowler. And you can add more
countries to it. Doesn't need to be four nations, right.
Russia is not in it this year obviously because of
the sanctions with the with the war with Ukraine. Germany
almost had enough players to get in this year. They didn't.
So you know, in future years, other teams are going
(26:29):
to be able to put more. Uh oh, the countries
gonna put more teams and okay, so maybe it's six
or seven teams and it's a two week tournament where
you're playing every other night and you're eventually getting a champion.
This is a huge event. It would own two weeks
in the calendar in a great spot between the end
of the All Star the end of the Super Bowl,
and the beginning of baseball. And we're not quite at
(26:49):
March the NCAA tournament yet. This is a great spot
for it, and the and the NHL can own two
weeks of the calendar that they haven't owned in years.
This makes complete and total replace the All Star Game
with this, and everybody will be all in. You can
see how much it means to everybody that the United
States Canada here at the end. Right. So now that
(27:10):
you know this, not only has the NHL figured that out,
they figured out the pesky mid season tournament that everybody
wants to do now, just like soccer in Europe, Ray,
we got to have something mid season to break up
the doldrums, to give people something to can you to
watch for. NBA has been looking for it with the
nd season tournament. NHL's found it now with this, this
should be a permanent part of the calendar every single year.
(27:31):
Everybody's in it. Call it whatever you want, give out
medals at the end. And you see how easy this
was to become a huge hit, right. But it's just
the NHL that just kept throwing stuff out there. Oh
we found something now, so this should be what it is.
If the NBA keeps doing this, eventually they'll find something
to the people like and like the players want USA
versus the world. Maybe that doesn't for him. A happy
(27:53):
player is a good player. So if the NBA players
want this, okay, we can make that work. Just keep
throwing stuff up against the wall. But at least short term.
You adopt this strategy, even if you did it with
micro teams, and look, do it with eight team rosters
like you did this All Star game in tribute to
the Knick's rotation. Actually, no, we got to move that
to seven. I'll move that to five. We're just gonna
(28:13):
you five. Were gonna play the entires? Okay? Well yeah,
short games, short duration. But I mean you saw Kevin Durant, right,
all these guys do a bunch of sit down interviews. Yeah,
they're at the dais and they get some inane questions. Uh,
some of the usuals, the hey what would you do
if they're their commissioner? And Pascal Siaka have just started laughing,
going I'm just here so I don't get fined, right,
and uh they asked Adam Silver the the inverse and said, well,
(28:38):
if you're a player, you know what do you think?
He goes, well, I wouldn't complain about officiating, and then
just give the usual no feratu stairs. See it all
ties together?
Speaker 3 (28:47):
Fair to you?
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Say either one? It's fine. Yeah, it's just a bridge
shapestry we weave here to try to bring things together,
but not we'll fight about it later. But to the
idea of the US versus the world that Kevin Durant
interview clip where he starts talking about what the Olympic
experience meant to him, his path to the NBA, all
(29:09):
that he got emotional talking about that team and and
the you know, camaraderie and the finish there and and
the fans and their response and everything else. So you
can build into that forget about the dopey nd season tournament, right,
which are all just basically games that are double counted
until they're not. So just have this in Vegas every year.
(29:31):
Just do it and just decide all right to the club, right, Well,
we could do that too, could do that too. You're
thinking Adam Silver's regular life everything comes down every solution
is tournament comes down to a church. Thought you were
gonna say, in Adam Silver's life, he's ever been to
a club? I'd pitched him in the corner. What's in
this drink? I don't have this as right here? Yes,
he's been to a club. Yeah, let's have a turnan
(29:53):
sit along over there. Let's tournaments in the club tournament.
Yeah exactly, We're closed the doors and we're gonna play
tournament right here, spinning disco over the top and everything.
I'm telling you, just keep trying stuff, trial and error. Yes,
is it the most sophisticated thing? No? Could you be
hiring some sort of PR firm to figure out the
right thing? Yeah, but sometimes you gotta just yeah, you know,
(30:13):
you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet.
I mean you gotta. I mean really, omelets are expensive
now because eggs are really expensive. That's like a thirty
dollars omelet. You know, I've got your hack, guy, No,
what's the heck? Well, we talked about it. You can
buy individual eggs now at some stories. Wow, some folks
are just stealing it. Oh, I'll sell you an egg,
But I think how many eggs? You got? Two? Two
eggs I got? I got a dozen eight dollars for
(30:35):
two eggs. I got a dozen jumbo for four ninety nine. Wow? Yeah,
did you buy Did you buy them off eBay? Did
you did you buy them off the back of a truck?
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Hey, I came in a deal.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
I bought with a bunch of Star Wars Galaxy chrome cards.
Those eggs are cracked like Jal's three pointer. You and
the purple I got speakers. You might wantch just speakers,
went brand new, factory quality speakers and eggs. I can
get both of them for you right now. The eggs
are little more expective than speakers, but I got them
both for you. So you went home with eggs and sell.
If I can get a packaged deal, absolutely, you know me.
(31:11):
I'm always looking for a bargain and what can I resell?
How do we make a few extra bucks on it?
I'm in come on time not to find out what's
trending in the wide world of sports. A guy who's
been called the Adam Silver of Fox Sports Radio. It's
because he's very tall and he loves tournaments. It's Steve Desager.
I'm buying eggs on eBay. I'm still kind, sir, well,
(31:31):
and then you have Adam Silver and shaped like an egg. Steve,
I won that.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Congratulations. It's gonna get to the point where it's one egg,
not the dozen is four ninety nine if you want
to just buy them individually. By the way, you talked
about hockey ratings, and it should be very good for
Thursday nights finale at this mini tournament. But this tournament's
replacing this year the NHL All Star Game, in a year,
we're gonna have the Winter Olympics in Italy. But the
(31:59):
NHL All Star Game in the TV ratings one year
ago drew just under one point four million viewers last
week in US Canada was four point four million on
the exact same network. In other words, aside from Stanley
Cup Final Game seven last summer, it's the most watched
NHL related telecast in the past.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Couple of years.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
And it will be Canada at the US in this
championship game coming up on Thursday night. Last Saturday, the
Americans won on the road tonight in Boston. The US,
which had started two to zero in the tournament, did
not win tonight, did not need a win, lost two
to one to Sweden. Sweden's out they had a couple
of overtime losses already. Earlier Today in Boston, Canada advanced
with a five to three victory over Finland. That game
(32:42):
was four to nothing in the third period. The NBA
is off until Wednesday's makeup game Hornets at Lakers. Most
teams returned to play on the hardwood on Thursday night.
Speaker 1 (32:52):
Are they making up the trade as well on Wednesday?
Speaker 3 (32:55):
If only okay, you know, if you could just grow
between now and Thursday, they could use a center.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
Anybody out of there. See what you can do, Mark Williams, superserum,
Mark Williams, can you what can you pass the physical?
Between now and Wednesday, we can retroactive that trade. We
can make an apple or.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
Clone any tall guy currently on the roster because they're
stuck at this point. Cincinnati Bengals planned a franchise tag
wide receiver T Higgins again this year if they can't
sign him to a long term deal in the next
couple weeks. The NFL's tag window officially opens on Tuesday afternoon.
It will last until March fourth, so I'm not sure
if we're going to hear Higgins news immediately tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
A year ago, t Higgins was.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
The only player who was tagged by his team that
did not sign a multi year extension. Now, his salary
will be at least twenty six million dollars for the
coming season. The Raiders parted ways with assistant GM Champ Kelly.
Las Vegas has a new general manager, John Spytech. The
A's gave manager Mark Kotse a three year extension. Mike
Trout of the Angels is switching to right field to
(33:52):
try to stay healthy. He's thirty three years old. Trout's
missed almost four hundred games in the last four years.
His team's first full squad work out was today.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
Back to you, se correct me if I'm wrong. Wasn't
Champ Kelly the sports guy in Anchorman? Isn't that David
ke champ Kelly?
Speaker 2 (34:10):
I thought it was.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
Mixed between him and Chip Kelly. I believe led to
the Raiders Kingmong being uh exit out but a Fresca
exit swollen dome coming up next, A big time position
change in sports because I'm pretty sure a team listens

Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
I'm pretty sure the angels listen to the show. Idam
like Angels in America or Charlie's Angels, Angels in the Outfield,
Hangels in the Outfield, nuts, flap flapping, Come on, flap
flap for me. I'll help you.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Is that my try it out right?
Speaker 1 (35:58):
The angel will help you. Oh no, he's again. Uh,
but Mike Trout, in an effort to stay on the
field for the Los Angeles Greater Anaheim San Bernardino County,
he is moving to right field for this season. I
play right to cut the wear and tear on him.
(36:20):
That will hopefully allow him to play more games. He's
played three games out of the last seven hundred and
seventy six. So Trout, who has not been able to
stay in the lineup for the last three years, continues
at thirty three years old. But look, we've talked about
this for a while now, we've been on the air,
you know, eleven years now. I remember thinking, hey, Trout's
twenty eight years old. He's a bigger guy. He's going
(36:41):
to start breaking down. And what's happened in the last
three years. He can't stay in the lineup, whether it
is backspasms, a fractured wrist, torn meniscus which knocked him
out last year, he can't stay in the lineup. And
the Angels feel, hey, moving him to right field is
gonna lessen the wear and tear on him and he
will be all right. And I feel like they listen
(37:02):
to the show because what did we say months ago
when Trout got injured, was out for the year. What
did I say when he comes back. He comes back
as a designated hitter. I know it's gonna suck, but
you're paying him a lot of money. It ain't like
Randone's gonna be there to take him that. No, no, no, no,
that's not happening. And while he has played a really
(37:23):
good center field, right, he's grill at center field, gets
after ball, not a gold Glover, hasn't won a Gold Glove.
So at this point in his career, at thirty three,
take him off the field. Take him off the field.
You want his bat in the lineup for one hundred
and fifty games a year, right, and even more if
he's just a designated hitter, right, not worried about playing
(37:44):
the foot man. If I can get him to one
hundred and thirty even without the field, you need his
bat in his thirty five homer, one hundred and twenty
RBI three, twenty batting average ops of one. You need
that in the lineup. And I don't understand why, oh,
we're gonna put him in right field. Look, I get
that it's a tough thing. You need to have a
tough conversation with him and say, okay, here's the deal.
(38:06):
We need you to play. We need your bat more
than your glove. We need you to say doesn't mean
you're never gonna play the field, but we need you here,
and we've made this decision, and you're gonna be the
designated hitter for us this year. And we'd rather have
one hundred and forty games of you hitting and zero
games in the field than thirty games of you wherever
it is, because that's kind of what it is. He's
not gonna suddenly get healthier. You got to keep the
(38:27):
game going. So this should have been a decision of Okay,
I get that. Hey, moving him to right field is
a is a choice, and that helps a little bit.
But he's still playing the field. He's still somebody that
is falls victim to back spasms, knee injuries. Let's make
sure we lessen that. And the only thing you should
really be doing that that's a big stress is running
(38:47):
the basis. Nothing you can do for that. It's got
to run the basis. Okay, but let's do that part
of it. Let's go all the way instead of Hey,
maybe this will work if he doesn't, if he doesn't
wind up playing center field, and right field to work. Okay,
you're asking for or another injury at some point. But
that's the thing. He's not gonna suddenly change his mind
from I'm in right field. So in right field, we
don't dive for balls, go anywhere near the fences or
(39:10):
the railings by the fan. No, we don't do any
of that.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
No.
Speaker 1 (39:14):
I am confined to this twenty five yard area that
I will roam. And that is it gonna make Cam
Newton's Super Bowl business decisions. Every time a ball is
hit in front of him, Oh, I can't dive on that.
That's gonna be a single easy catch up. It drops
in for another hit as he lazily due just s
trots towards. Don't worry about it off the wall. Just
(39:34):
hit a fly ball in front of trout. He doesn't
go for you, lets it bounce it and then picks
up and throws it in. You'll be fine. He lets
it roll dead and then he picks it up. You
had that kid on your one of your teams. I
had that kid. I wanted my team. You have a
glove on on for a reason, so son use it.
But look at his last several years. Right thirty six
(39:54):
games one in twenty twenty one, one hundred and nineteen,
and twenty twenty two eighty two, So got to have
none of them matters, right, Well, that's the thing. None
of them are still gonna matter. I mean, that's where
we're at. But the last time he actually appeared in
one hundred and forty games was twenty eighteen. Now he's
the he goes down as a guy, and we've talked
about it a long time. The only meaningful bats he's
(40:15):
taken are Opening Day and All Star Game appearance is
trying to win trucks from Rick Wilde. Look it up.
That's it. That's all we got. Hey, winning trucks is
a big thing, if true. If you can win a
truck in every game, Okay, I got a I got
one hundred and thirty trucks in a season, we're ever
gonna park all the truck. Hey. Look, if you play
(40:37):
and drop a truck, everyone more plate appearances, you get
another truck. I got fourteen silver trucks, I got eighteen
black trucks. I got I got three gold trucks. Okay there, Okay,
is he running a car dealership? No, he's just won
so many and he's got He's got to do something.
Just understand, play another five years, stop playing the field,
so you have to do twenty This year took his
(40:58):
career batting average under three. Get hurt as the DH.
If that happens, it happens, but at least it's the
least possible thing. Doesn't have the elbow injuries yet, does he? Hey,
speaking of injuries, we got some big stories coming up
next right here, Jason and Mike Fox
