the way tire buying should be. Well, here we are.
(00:52):
We're almost back at the resumption of nightly professional sports. Yeah,
and I made college basketball's playing. That's kind of it is.
They are getting paid. I should say that, I I I,
I okay, I just try to help you. No, No,
is there something being played overseas, but we can tap
into right now. I think more people will be interested
(01:14):
in Luca and Lebron tomorrow night than you know Illinois basketball.
I'm just saying Lebron playing. Lebron is suddenly going to
be healthy after after skipping on the All Star Game
for whatever personal protest he had going on for the
All Star Really, dude, you couldn't put your jersey on
for the pictures, whatever reason he decided. I don't want
(01:36):
to do this for I have no idea. It's just certain,
certain certain things involving Lebron James. I just say, Okay,
this is something we got to wait into this and
certain things. I just say, you know, whatever, man, yes
you didn't play. What does it matter what whatever person,
whatever personal injustice was done to you, or the reason
you failed, the need to skip and not dress, not anything, whatever. Man,
(01:58):
I don't even care that that's something. I don't even
care about what whatever reason. I'm sure we'll find out
at some point because it hasn't been a big deal.
It's just been bandied about. Hey, Lebron should have played.
Why didn't he play? He could have given a spot
to somebody else. He knew he wasn't gonna play. But
it hasn't got a lot of attention. So we'll find
out at some point because well, Lebron did this and
didn't get enough attention on it. So we'll find out. Well,
(02:18):
he'll be happy to tell reporters tomorrow. So why did
I skip the All Star Game? I didn't. I asked
you about Luca's first half. Oh, I'll tell you why
I skip the All Star Games. Someone will ask him.
There's no question about it. But asked that. But okay,
But you know, just scrolling the timeline as they do,
you know, as I'm out walking the dog or whatever.
It's like there was just so much about Lebron and
(02:39):
people with the faux anger. It's like you said you
were skipping the event. You're all mad about the event
and hating on the event. Like whether he played or not,
that was gonna be the difference. Yeah, Like suddenly him
appearing as part of that four hour whatever that was
on Sunday night was gonna make the difference. And no,
(03:00):
like he didn't play, you didn't care anyway, You already
dismissed Draymond dismissed it, but else dismissed it. It's like,
so whether he played or not, who the hell cares?
Like I was done with it and arguing whether he
was in on it. That's why the whole All Star Game.
The controversy is ridiculous because it's done. It's over. It's
(03:21):
twenty four hours later. No one gives a crap man
just because in the media whatever. Big basketball fans want
to be really upset about the All Star Game because oh,
it's not great anymore. It hasn't been great for years.
This is not new, and the players are upset. You
haven't tried for years, like you're complaining about something just
to complain. There's none it's over. It's done. We've moved on.
I'm moving on to what's next. I appreciate that there's
(03:43):
some percentage of the audience that really wishes and wanted,
like we talked about last night, that it could be
something off of what we've watched with the hot National
Hockey League and the international competition that they've created that's cool,
right extended from there, and that there's a percentage that
really wanted to matter. And then there's everybody else. It's like,
(04:05):
all right, it was already a convention. Yeah whatever, let's
just finish it there. Do I can see on wine
and stare at Thursday? We get some free swag, like
do I get a bag? And and like a like
a soda or is you know what do I get?
But that's what it's been for years. It's it's the convention.
You go meet up and go to a sponsor activation,
you shake hands, kiss babies, and take a giant check.
So as we get ready for the games tomorrow night,
(04:27):
to presume because we have the game postponed from the
LA fires, we have the United we have the United States,
We have a Lakers and the United States again Charlotte
represented by Luca, Don Luca and the Lakers Williams. He
just gets left behind.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
I think he goes to get on the bus tomorrow
night and they just go, you know, just dude, We're
just gonna figure out in the off season. We get
the new legs, just stay here, It'll be fine. Just
put new legs on it. Half time. Two things, do
we have doctors here locally that can pull that off?
Revolving around Luca for tomorrow night. The first one the
story from earlier today that potentially when Luca missed the
beginning of the season with a quote injury, it wasn't
(05:03):
because he was injured, it was because the MAVs had
to sort of make up an injury designation because he
wasn't in shape yet, because he wasn't in shape for
the beginning of the season. Not like I came to
camp not in shape because you spend time and can't
get it. He wasn't in shape for the beginning of
the season. Okay, after playing in the six. This goes
(05:25):
back to what we said when the trade happened. The
Mavericks didn't just wake up and on a whim, Nico
Harrison decides, I'm trading Luca Donsage today. Right, there was
stuff that went on. It's not hard to understand why
they traded him. Obviously, this if this story, if they
had to hold him out because he wasn't healthy for
the beginning of the season, this tells you he was
(05:49):
never gonna do anything they want him to do as
far as staying in shape or making sure he takes
care of his body. He was never gonna do that. Right,
he's been he's been there a long time. They've wanted
him to do it. Now he's getting into his mid twenties,
late twenties, and the and the Mavericks knew and they thought, Okay,
his body is gonna break down. He's gonna turn into
Mike Trout at some point because he's not gonna take
care of his body and being bigger, he's gonna find
(06:11):
a tough way to stay on the field, and we're
gonna it's gonna turn into Mike Trout from the perspective
of we have this great player who's not gonna play
in a lot of games because he's always going to
get injured. Mike Trout's in shape, his body just can't
take the pounding of one hundred and sixty two games.
So they knew, okay, it's never gonna work. They've tried
four years to get Luca to do things the way
they felt to do it. Anico Harrison, according to everybody,
(06:33):
is a big health nut and wanted it. Is really
big on nutrition and being in shape, and Luca wasn't
gonna do it. And at the end of this year,
Luca was eligible for a three hundred plus million dollar extension.
The Mavericks didn't want to pay him. That they had
had the best of Luca. They knew going forward it's
a big risk, and we give him three hundred million dollars.
(06:54):
He hasn't done anything we've asked him to do as
far as staying in shape for the last seven years.
What the hell is he gonna do it now? Once
we give him three hundred million dollars, he's gonna have
unbelievable power in the organization. So you know what, we're
moving on. That's why they made the trade. There's nothing
more sinister. It was they tried to get Luca to
be a better teammate, take care of his body because
he's an asset, and you're gonna give three If they
(07:15):
didn't have to give him a lot of money, and
it was just hey, the next couple of years, yeah,
they would have gone through and said, okay, great, we're
good with Luca for another couple of years. Then'll be
twenty eight years old or however old he's going to be,
and then we can move on or look to trade
him then. But the fact that hey, we gotta pay
him really soon, we don't want to give it to him.
He doesn't stay in shape for us, he doesn't do
what we want him to do. He doesn't listen to us.
So if someone doesn't listen and we don't want to
(07:37):
give him that kind of money, we're gonna trade him.
Like that's what happened. There was nothing sinister neither. That's
what it was. It was pretty easy for the Mavericks
to make that decision. They decided, let's be a little
bit early on trading Luca, so we get an all
NBA player at Anthony Davis back, rather than just wait
and wait till the summer comes and realize he's not
gonna sign with us. We don't know if he wants
(07:57):
to come back anyway. Because oh, by the way, that
was part of the equation, because Luca didn't know if
he was going to return to the Mavericks. Remember he
said in his opening press conference with the Lakers, I
always do it would end this way. So really, when
you're saying, when you say there's no future and you
don't listen, what else are you gonna do? Of course,
this is why they made the trade. And I understand
why they made the trade. I don't get why everybody
(08:18):
is with so many people are still just so up
in arms about how do you know? How do you
make that trade? No, there's a reason why the Mavericks
did it. Yeah, I mean, look, in the end, where
we're at now is the we're going to leak anything
medically historically that we can find in the Luca files
(08:40):
to really to the point of over justifying why we
made this move. All of what you said could have
been part of the thought process, but now it's the
all right, now we're gonna we gotta do overkill because
we've been absolutely savaged in the local media. So now
it's it's a full on. Anything Luca did for us
doesn't matter because we have to make him out to
(09:02):
be a terrible teammate, a terrible employee, and a lazy guy.
Now his squad Slovenia did not qualify for the Olympics,
but he played through before Jannis and company took him out.
But all of that to say, we go through this
every year with the ramp up to play and how seriously,
(09:24):
guys take the eighty two game regular season Luca is
now being put up as with this latest one, it
wasn't entirely true. Well was he hurt or was he not?
Because there's a lot of gray in every injury report.
We get hurt again, Lebron right now, right? How bad
is that ankle? Was it? Just? You know what I've
(09:46):
done this nineteen times. I don't need to next year's
in La. I'll come back and I'll have a glorious
goodbye run and then everybody will build me a giant
chair and bring me their greatest like a and coming
to America and it's the Festival of Nations, bringing me
goods to tell me out. Yeah. Yeah, but you know
(10:08):
that kind of anger, you know, pick your favorite movie
or TV show where they've done similar all of that
to say, do I doubt you know you're part of it?
Of they were tired of fighting this and three hundred
and fifty million dollars and taking his beer and all
of those things. Don't take his beer, no, I mean,
look that was the final straw. Well but from a
(10:30):
Luca and his dad. That's where they said goodbye to Luca,
right there where they took his beer after winning the Western.
I think it's funny, it's true, but where he also
probably said, you're gonna treat me like this after what
I'm doing for this squad. I get it. You take
a beer for me? I mean, now you understand what
because it was ridiculous. Now you want Okay, there's something
behind that because they've told him we want you to
cut down on your drinking, watch to carry your body
(10:51):
and how many times can you have somebody just completely
dis disrespect you and not say it before you say,
you know what, it's time for you to get a
fresh start. Well, but it's disrespect the other way too,
Like he earned that beer in that moment. You may
you may not like it on the grand scale, but
you know there are cameras there. Yeah, you know that
that's gonna get out. And Michael Finley played the role
(11:11):
of the bad guy for the organization in that spot.
But but if you're Luka Doncis on the other side,
it's like you've busted your ass and you've carried the
squad like, which is, as you've said all a week,
undis you know, undisputed, right, it's indisputable what he's meant,
what he meant to that organ I said, I got
(11:32):
to make sure I get my past tens in what
he meant to that organization that when they took his beer,
they showed him everything. They showed their ass at that
moment too. Of wow, we're really at this level of
pettiness of this, like you can't enjoy in the moment
because coming back to the start of the year, as
I said, it's an eighty two game slog plus postseason
(11:54):
you just went through a long run, you may have
taken a couple of weeks off. You may be a
give but it's not. But but again, it's not just
eighty two games. This is over the course of since
he's been with the tea and frustrated. But then it
becomes the ramp up and then you have to decide
at the end, was he not in shape enough when
he got you to the finals? Well, the finals is great,
(12:14):
and then to start the next season potentially, oh, we
got to put you on the injured list because you're
not in shape. That might might That was okay? Where
is the is the risk really hurt or is it not?
You played a little bit that hasn't. But but if
legitimately he wasn't hurt, then the team has to wear
it because they put him on it, so they should
(12:34):
be fined as soon as this report, like if this
can be corroborated, now, now the team should be on
the hook because now you've been lying about the injury report,
which is supposed to be such a bastion of truth. Again,
I laugh at it because we see it all the time.
Why is this guy not playing? Eh, we can claim
an ankler and what does it matter we told you
wasn't playing as long as you get that information right,
(12:55):
the gamblers know he's not playing. But that's what I'm saying,
like with the Luca thing, like how much is this
is real versus now damage control after the fact, and
the Mavericks are never going to get the benefit of
the doubt on that. Fully so great, but now it's
sour great she made this trade, and there's always gonna
be some percentage of that pie chart where it's all right,
(13:16):
now you're just doing damage control because you've lost. However,
many suite holders, season ticket holders, meet. Local media has
gone after you. Local advertisers, I have no doubt, had
asked for a make good, especially once Anthony Davis got
on the court and got hurt. Immediately, we're gonna put
ad in these commercials now instead of Luca. Is that okay?
All right? Great? But I mean you saw down in
(13:37):
San Antonio, Dearon Fox was doing all sorts of local
ads immediately right he became the champion of the city.
But come down to town fair tire and meet me
de'aron Fox. But for Luca Dodges, after they make that trade,
the Mavericks looked so bad. I mean, how many statements
do you have to utter and things do you need
to leak out to these reporters. And I'm not saying
(13:59):
they're I'm just saying, at this point, it's the stop stop.
He's already dead. Like the Yeah, they've been taking the
road on it a long way through that hasn't been
any Okay, just let you know. These are all the
things that Luka Doncic has done. Like they say, Okay,
we're gonna let it go, and then Luca wanted to
light it up a little bit and and I'm sure
the Mavericks thought, Okay, we're sick of taking this in
(14:20):
the teeth. So now hey, certain things are gonna get
out about Luca and his behavior and what we wanted
to do and didn't do. It's it's it's that's kind
of natural. It's how it goes. Telling you, man, they
didn't just wake up and say, oh, we're gonna trade
Luca out. Yeah, at some point though, the ex has
to let it go. Exit out about a Fresco exit
swollen down. We'll have more on this because the other
(14:41):
big part of the Luca bombshell dropped earlier today as well.
We got that plus a halftime speech. You absolutely have
to hear that's is it will fair? Oh no, there
was some There was some bombs in it. You gotta
hear it. That's it's next right here, Jason and Mike Fogs.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
You want to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. Uh I halftime speech you absolutely have
to hear coming up in a couple of minutes, But
a little bit more to finish on Luca uh gonna
play tomorrow night for the Lakers. We talked two minutes ago.
(16:32):
We report out there potentially that Luca's injury the beginning
of the year wasn't quite an injury. It was more, Hey,
he's not really in shape to start the season, so
we got to make something up. All right, But who's
in shape, like really to just get after by the
beginning of the season. I think you're by opening night,
(16:53):
like for the eighty two games, Like there's a different
pacing of yourself, Like what you know you're gonna need
to pull up for the Yeah. Right, you may show
out those first couple of games. Hey, welcome to the
new year, but you're pacing yourself and in this case,
if he's not ready to go, you need him in April. Yeah,
but how many guys in the NBA are not in shape?
Him and Joel Embiid, Right, Like how many guys play
(17:14):
basketball all year around? Right? They play there's no off season.
It's unless you like, hey, I just kind of hang
out now. It's not like the guy's alternative fat four
from from end game and play. Hey, you want to
get off this thing? We're playing games here, I mean
they're they're in shape all the way through. So yes,
does it take you time to get into game shape
and get ready? Yeah, but to potentially not be ready
(17:34):
for the beginning of that when you go through training camp,
you go through set of was a wrist injury? Jason?
Are you calling the Mavericks liars? Because if they lied,
then like I'll do them like a law and order.
If you lie, then why do I have to believe you? Now,
when Michael Finley grabbed his beer, you kind of hurt
my wrist a little bit. I can't really right then,
(17:55):
But here's when he dove to the floor and looking
for a call and crying. Here's the other part of
the story that I love because today JJ Reddick was
asked about Luca, and obviously Luca's being in shapeness and
his conditioning is is the front burner topic. Now. You
can't avoid it. There can't be anything. And that's one
good thing about this trade is that everything that wasn't
(18:17):
gonna happen with Dallas can happen with la He gets
a trade, it's a wake up call. This organization is
not going to treat him like the Mavericks, where we're
gonna let you do whatever you want to do. Everybody
knows you're not in shape. You have to prove to
everybody that you are in shape and can play. And
JJ Reddick said today when he was asked about playing, Yeah,
my buddy, JJ Reddick, Hey, JJ, ready to resume our feud?
(18:38):
I know we got the game tomorrow night. Ready to
resume our feud. I'll second guess you all the way
through tomorrow Night's game. Man, Ready for our feud? Yeah
my buddy, I say, buddy is like in it's kind
of an in your friends, but it's someone says little
buddy nice. It's around the holidays when you say little right.
Jason Smith won four two. I won't talk to Jason
(18:59):
Jason uh Is that he said today. Look, I see
here's where I can be fair. I agree, and I'm
glad with what the Lakers are doing. Ce jj Reddick. See,
this is why people listen to me. Uh Is. He said,
no restrictions going forward for Luca. I don't see any
reason why there's any kind of restriction. They are not
in shape. Well, that's the thing is that he gets
(19:20):
the trade. He hasn't played since December. Okay, let's get
you in, let's get you go. We're not gonna go
crazy for you here. You got a couple of games
till the All Star break. Let's get you in and
get you going. But now once the All Star break
is over, you're ready. We're not gonna baby you. We're
not gonna ask you nicely to say, hey, will you
do this, and then if you don't do it, we'll
circle back with you in a couple of months, then
we'll circle back again in the off season. No, this
(19:42):
is we expect you to do certain things, and if
you don't, we're gonna have a problem, so right away
it's there should be no restriction. So I love the
fact the Lakers are doing this because it's we're holding
him accountable right away. Because the more the more room
you give Luca to say, hey, yeah, take some time,
get in shape, maybe he doesn't, Maybe he gets hurt.
(20:02):
Maybe something happens because he's not in shape and he
gets injured. You can't stay in the game as stamina.
Who knows, but the Lakers have basically said, yeah, now
we expect you. You had some time, you had to
use to the trade, you played a couple of games,
got your feet, but we're gonna go crazy for you there.
We had a nice long break for the All Star game.
Time for you to get healthy, get used to everything,
get mentally focused. Now you're ours. Now your ours, and
(20:23):
you're gonna stay. We made a big trade for you,
and you're the future of this team, and we're probably
gonna give you a huge contract get to this year.
But you gotta show us. And that's the Lakers doing
right now right away by saying no restrictions, know nothing.
There's been no babying of Lucas so far, so it's
like we're gonna throw you out there and you have
to show us. And I love that this is their
angle for it. Oh, you had a couple of games
where you eased him in against Utah and now you've
(20:47):
had an extra week of whatever conditioning, whatever he did
during the All Star break. I know Nikola Jokic was
lamenting that his buddy wasn't there with him because of
their wild nights and converse and whatever else. So hopefully
he got through the weekend. Okay, But for Luca, what
(21:07):
Reddick can't come in and say, yeah, we're going to
go soft, right, He's either Jeries out right now, so
this would have been my expectation. Yeah, he still needs
some more and he can't do that, especially with whatever
nebulous ankle injury you've got going on with Lebron James. Right,
it's time second half, and look, you gotta be bold,
(21:29):
right JJ. Reddick is nothing if not a guy who
will give you the hot take and the rhetoric right
from the plumbers and electricians comments. Hi, JJ, we don't
forget those. You dismissed everybody that came before you and
played with you, and now you're you're expecting Luca to
come and be that guy. So yeah, make make your
(21:53):
bold proclamation. But if he only plays twenty four minutes tomorrow,
we're gonna have a lot of questions. Yeah, but I
mean should we No, I mean this is where we're
pretty this is this is now. It's on you. It
was on us before, now it's on you. And that's
the right way to handle this man. But it also
now is if Luca does get hurt, JJ Redick and
(22:14):
company will have to bear some responsibility for trying to
trying to put it like basically, so, they're not gonna
put it. They're not gonna put him out there if
he wasn't healthy, They're not gonna do that. I mean,
you can't that. That's the spotlight of the world is
on this situation. They're not gonna put him out to
see him ply, he looked pretty healthy to me. He
looked fine. He just looked like he was really tired
after his first couple of times. Sandwich not even like
(22:34):
half a sandwich, not even a full sandwich. Man, like
half a sandwich. Hey, I need some time. I need
a time out. Oh Jason Smith, get a timeout baby.
Oh the cheese is falling out of your sandwich.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Oh the Maranaise, there's too much.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Get a time out, O breath quickening, Oh, Jason, good,
Dicky d back right. We talked about all of those
big moments, you know, Hubie Brown's retirement and and Dicky
getting back at it and immediately got himself an instant classic.
But yeah, you leaning into the joke was good. Now
(23:08):
you needed a too while eating your sandwich. The halftime
speech you didn't know you needed coming up in ninety seconds.
But first, a man who's been compared to being the
Luka Doncic of Fox Sports Radio. Incredibly talented, incredibly talented,
but sometimes lacks the stamina to make it all the
(23:29):
way to the end of his shift. It's Steve de Seger.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
You don't hear any forty eight minute updates.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
There is I see you leaving a half hour for
the show. Wins every night.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
It is at FS one, We've got the Lake College
basketball game from UCLA. The Bruins lead Minnesota late first
half thirty one twenty three. Just before this at eleventh
rank Wisconsin, the Badger's beat Illinois ninety five seventy four
easy wins in the top ten for Florida at Iowa State,
fifth ranked Houston has just won at Arizona's State eighty
to sixty five. Houston led by twenty late in the

first half, but number seven Texas A and M was
beaten at number twenty one Mississippi State Bulldogs were down
early second half, but bat A and M seventy to
fifty four. Mississippi State was six and six in Conference
TCU at home defeated number nine Texas Tech sixty nine
sixty six. Tech had been eleven to three in the
Big Twelve Conference. Michigan State overproduced seventy five sixty six.
(24:26):
That sets up the big Friday night matchup on Fox TV,
when number twelve Michigan hosts number fourteen Michigan State. Spartan's
only a half game behind first place Michigan under three
weeks left in the regular season. Sixteenth rank Marquette pounded
seat in all eighty to fifty six BYU upset number

NHL are still off. Most NBA teams return to play
Thursday night. The NHL is off until this Saturday. The
Blue Jays failed to sign All star of Vladimir Guerrero
Junior to an extension. The first baseman's deadline was late
life last night. He said Toronto did not offer a
deal close to what he wanted. Guero last season had
thirty homers and one hundred and three RBIs. He turned
(25:07):
twenty six next month. The Cubs agreed to sign veteran
infielder Justin Turner, aged forty one year, six million dollars
plus incentives. Turner played last year with Toronto and Seattle.
The Cubs and Turner's old team. The Dodgers opened the
regular season in March in Tokyo with games at six
am Eastern time, the first on Fox TV, the second
(25:28):
on FS one. The Red Sox invited veteran reliever Adam
Ottavino to spring training at age thirty nine, Ottavino pitch
for the Mets the past three years, and new Boston
infielder Alex Bregman says he's willing to move from third
base to second base if that's what his new manager wants,
Rafael Devers.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
It's really what Rafaeld Devers wants text, not really what
Kral wants.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Den Rivers won quite loudly said he did not want
to move away from third, but Bregman did just win
the American League Gold Glove there last season with Houston.
The Carolina Panthers resigned court Andy Dalton at age thirty seven.
Novak Djokovic lost his first match at the quitar Open.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
Back to You, Thank you, Steve though the Jason Spizer
with Mike Carmon live from the Tirak dot com studios.
Now the halftime speech you didn't know you needed, but
you do. Uh. This is starting to go viral after
was released last night. Now, there is a Vice Sports
series called Patino Red Storm Rising, which if Red Storm
of course it's had a lots to be Red Storm Rising,
(26:25):
Red Hulk, no Red Store, you don't have to out
you have to pay Tom Clans anymore. So Red Storm Rising,
which is kind of a documentary on this season with
Saint John's Basketball and Rick Patino. Saint John's has been
terrific over the course of this this basketball season. They've
they've they've flipped a switch and suddenly look at where
they are, a top ten team rolling through the Big East.
(26:47):
This video has gone viral. This is a Rick Patino
halftime speech back from a game in the middle of
December when Saint John's was taking on Providence Patino. Let's
just let's just sum it up by saying he wasn't
real happy with the first half Saint John's head against Providence.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
Anyone freak that out there? Okay, you got key Mark composer.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
We've got too far, that's too much.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Well, I'd hate to see him in March. Now. At
this point, Saint John's was trailing Providence, who was unranked
by thirteen. He was not happy, and he made sure
to let his players know it with this.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
Don't quite catch it.
Speaker 5 (27:31):
The injes we need are everywhere around us.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
They're at every break in the game and every minute,
every second on this team.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
Weight for that inch, his pacino was great.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
On this team.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
We tear ourselves and everyone else all around us to
the heathens for that inch.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Claw with a fing ass. Need to at least eight
nine inches and then it's gonna be good. All right,
So so far, a pretty good speech, right, that's really good. Readily,
his pino is out of control. He does well. You
didn't think he's close to Patino close. Some people think
it's but you picked it up in an Italian restaurant.
He's al Pacino. I'm al Pacino totally different, dude, al Pacino,
(28:18):
al Pacina? When does it devolve into dunkucino?
Speaker 2 (28:22):
So?
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Uh? Here was Rick Patino with his halftime press conference
and being.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
A basketball player.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
They did every time you miss a shot, you don't
game to play.
Speaker 5 (28:35):
We don't care about your mid shots plays. You guys
keep blowing opportunity, pont opportunity upon opportunity.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
You're like children with bad things happening.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
Instead of thinking as the tougher you will, where is
your toughness? Where have you guys been raised that you're
so weak mentally that you up when something that's will
right for you? Don't you know what adversity is all about.
That's the game of life, not the game of basketball.
You don't get down when things go wrong. You're thinking
(29:10):
he can comfort your whole Life's gonna be adversity.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
We are to deal with it, Patina, Where were you guys?
I would raise my man. I was born in Syracuse
and I grew up on Staten Island. You asked where
I was raised? Oh is that rhetorical? And you were
just yellow. Yeah, So I'll show myself out now. I'm sorry.
You don't need me anymore, do you Okay, that's great.
I didn't even know Vice Sports was still a thing.
I know, look at that, and now I have this.
Apparently Brick Patina was upset and they're taping this whole
(29:34):
thing for Vice Sports. Now what he knows this is
being taped. Maybe a little bit more over the top Patina,
but it doesn't matter because this was This is one
of those speeches that you need when you're losing to
an unrite team at halftime, right and and for all
of the Hey, you want to make sure you send
a message of positivity. Yes, players are different, now gen
(29:54):
Z players are different. There needs to be a time
where hey, we're getting embarrassed against bleeping Providence. Man, you
need sometimes it's not about the x's and o's. It's
one of the Jimmy's and the Joe's. Right, it's not
the X and O. It's the Jimmy's and the Joe's.
And this is where it's, Hey, I'm challenging you to
get out there with a bigger effort and a bigger
effort defensively in the second half. And they went out
(30:15):
in the second half in that game, and they came
all the way back and won in overtime seventy two
to seventy.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Patino, we talked about this a couple weeks ago, and
he's the coach of the year in college basketball. Congratulations
because I saw people picking it up in the last week.
You know, Patina, Patino's a coach year in college bassall.
What he's doing with this team that is much greater
than some of its parts, is fantastic. They are rolling
rough shot over the Big East. It is a top
three defense overall in college basketball. They have a couple
(30:41):
of guards led by Kadari Richmond, who is becoming a superstar.
He strugged a little bit earlier part of the season,
but he is absolutely one of the best guards in
the country now. And they had the big comeback the
other night. Patina wasn't expecting dave On Smith to come
back transfer from Utah. He came back, they won big
game against Creighton. Said, listen, we wouldn't have won without him.
I really wasn't expecting him to play. He's spent such
(31:02):
a shot in the arm. We thought he was gonna
be injured, missed the rest of the season. I'll tell
you what right now, I'm picking Saint John's to win
the NC Tournament, pig. Now they're done. I'm picking Saint
John's to a number one because it's fun, because you know,
growing up, I told her the Saint John's fans growing up,
But this is Patino and the defense and Richmond and
the backcourt, which which look, when you get to the
(31:22):
NCA tournament, the team's the great backcourts win. Richmond can score,
he can, he's He's a terrific player. Right back when
when Syracuse decided, hey, we're not gonna do as much
as we can to keep you because we like Joe
Gerard a little bit more. But he's somebody went to
Seaton Hall, became a star player, moved on now to
Saint John's. Saint John's is terrific. And again they are
killing the Big East. Right. The Big East is a
(31:44):
really good basketball conference, right, I know we we we say, well,
you Con is great. Yeah, Yukon stinks this year. Saint
John's is terrific. They're at the top. They're gonna have
this same clinched in a week. Uh. I'm taking sat
all ready to tell you right now, let the cat
out of the bag. Wherever they are, I'm taking Saint
John's to win the NCA tur get you it's done
jumping all the way down there. I mean the bigger
thing I think it comes out when you have a
(32:05):
clip like this because remember Mick Crona, we talked about
it a few weeks ago when he went off in
that postgame presser. Obviously different environment right here, you're at
halftime halftime speech in the locker room, still with cameras
because you know it's being filmed, right You've got a
production deal. So whether you're over the top, this is
(32:27):
more in line who you are. Mick did it, no
doubt behind the scenes, and you hear all the stories
of his practices and the way he talks players. Remember
how much he got killed for his going after the play, Well,
how did they respond? They were fantastic right now, living
up to some of that preseason hype, a lot of
predictions what the top five in their entry to the
(32:51):
Big Ten. But the idea that you can't talk to
players that way, It's like these guys are in the
game a long time. It's like if you went to
Bob Knight back in the day, you knew he was volatile,
you knew what you were getting into, and if you
sent your kid there and were suddenly shocked that he
threw a chair or was yelling at your child or
potentially grabbing him by the scruff of the neck to
(33:13):
make a point. You didn't pay attention to anything that happened.
For likewise Patino, likewise make Cronin. They've been around a minute.
So that's part of who they are. Do they need
to adapt and change and have a little bit of
soft spot now and again, Sure, but at the heart
of it, they're gonna go to tough love. When you're
down at halftime and you're not playing well. You sometimes
(33:35):
I just need to get your attention. That's speech and
those kind of comments. And that's what people don't get
sometimes is that it's not that he It's not when
you hear a speech like this, oh he hates his players,
Like No, he's how do I get your attention in
the shortest amount of time? How do I get your destroyed?
And if I if I'm gonna yell this, if if
(33:55):
I gotta yell at you guys at halftime when you're
not playing up to standard, It's one thing if you're
winning by twelve and I'm still yelling at you, But
it's how do I get your attention in the shortest
period of time? Right, I still love you, but I
need I need to get your attention. This is what
it's all in space. This is how it goes. I mean,
it's sins. I look, I'm telling you, Patino Richmond, this
defensive Saint John's man, Saint John's see. I'm looking in
(34:17):
the Big ten and I'm gonna get suckered in again
to a guy I've gone in on a number of times,
evan Eschameier. Oh on, Northwestern? Are you doing man? I've
lost most of my starting units of injury this year.
Collins is trying to gut it out. So we always
have Big ten wrestling, Mike, I do. We were watching
(34:38):
a little bit earlier. We had the Hawks waiting. We're
waiting for the NBA to get going again because we
had Big ten wrestling on our television tonight, and now
we have we have Big ten hockey. That's odd. So yeah,
we really need the They are quasi professionals and you
can bet on all of it. So let's go coming
up next. What big NFL story from a week ago
apparently was never true? That's next, Jason and Mike Fox
(35:01):
Sports Radio. Oh, the jests are keeping Aaron stop. That was?
That is not a true story? True story? Trinky well
end that was. We have the odds for Aaron Rodgers
next team? We do who's in the lead the Bears.
We'll tell you next Fox.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
We still got two hours ago on the show. We
can't start drinking yet, Come on, we can start. It's
Beatino hour, Baby's bottle around. Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen,
Lifethtirack dot Com Studios. Well you knew what come to this?
Aaron Rodgers now officially the Jets of Wave goodbye to him.
Still trying to figure out just how they're going to Yeah,
(35:50):
we still got to go through the mechanisms of actually
all that pesky is we're going to take the dead
cap hit now, We're gonna do it over two years.
We're gonna try to trade him. But already the odds
have emerged for Aaron Rodgers next team. What team is
the favorite to land Aaron Rodgers? The subtitle of this
(36:12):
is this is how bad the quarterback crop of twenty
twenty five is in the offseason. Aaron Rodgers will get
a job somewhere, So Frostburg, you have the odds for
Rogers next team? Yeah, the Jets are won. Okay, we're
just kidd We're gonna bring it, come to their senses
and bring him back. You thought you were desperate, were
more desperate. We looked in the mirror again and realized
(36:35):
with made a terrible mistake. Keep Aaron Rodgers. No, that's
just what they'll be expecting us to do. They won't
expect us to cut him, spend all the dead cat
money and then sign him for a song. Haha, I'm
playing checkers off the press. Baby. The latest odds for
Aaron Rodgers next team? All right, what do we got? Well?
Syracuse is one? Okay, good? We need a quarterback? Yeah,
(36:55):
I think it's the left has a year of eligibility left.
I think we're okay. You think it's a college team,
which I think Bill Belichick's recruiting him. Okay, okay, well,
hey North Carolina, they would they would set the acc
on fire if that was the case, although a walk
on would probably be better. Oh, I don't know, man,
I really. I saw him play last year. I'd like
(37:16):
to see Rogers with the big gray beard up against
like an eighteen nineteen year old who were asking for
his autograph in between plays. Hey, Aaron, before you go
back to the huddle. Great, thanks appreciating his autographs. Not
worth much these days, right, all the all the defensive
players taking their phones into the huddle with them. Hey,
all right, pretty quick at the picture fast and we'll
get back to playing. Yeah. At this point, a lot
of it is the waiting for the ability to add
(37:37):
the Hall of Fame inscription. You don't get it signed
now and then come back five years later to put
the hof they don't. All right, they got the top
eight teams the odds. Ready eight teams? Okay, sure, okay,
sure there's more. Okay, you want to guess who the
favorite is? Uh No, what should go down through the
eight from eight to one? What brig Steelers plus two
(37:58):
fifty's that's number eight, number one? Oh, it's number one.
They're the favorite. See I completely did. We'll have more
than Steelers in a few minutes. But I completely disagree
with this because are they really gonna do the same
thing they did last year? Let's go, this guy finished
top ten. I mean, but but but Russell Wilson was
gonna be great. Mike Tomlin love, let's go get an
(38:18):
age quarterback four weeks. We're not sure how good he is,
but let's go, like, can you really do that again?
If Aaron Rodgers hadn't already gone to the Jets and
ripped up his leg, he might have been a Steeler
last year.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
You can't.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
He can't kill you that again. Gah, I know, I
know it's like to play matchmaker with that, and I'm
sure maybe Look, money's coming in on it, so it's
the lowest odds, but are they really gonna do that again?
Terry Brownshaw's a better option? Yeah, dude, Terry could still
sling it. I bet he's less drama. Uh yeah, okay, sure,
yes we'll say something. I don't know you had that,
(38:54):
But also you had the trophy presentation and you have
Aaron Rodgers on Tuesday with Pat McAfee. What's raider. I
like the trophy presentations, So I look, I I it's
hard for me to believe that the Steelers are that
they're gonna decide, even though Mike Tomlin wants to do it.
His way that that's what they're gonna do. That they
cut bait with both guys, both Russell and Justin Fields.
(39:16):
I really, I mean I I could see them keep No,
I could see them keeping Justin Fields because what I'm
saying going over the top and adding Aaron Rodgers. If
Justin Justin, we like you, but again, we're gonna go
get a guy older that's played a lot more that's
gonna come in and probably take the job from you.
But you're you're great, But there's just another guy. We're
(39:36):
gonna turn the job. But remember they also did not
fix the glitch. Arthur Smith is still there. You ready
for the second best odds? Go ahead, second best odds?
The read Oh that well that makes complete sense. Oh
the Raiders going after a guy well past his prime,
maybe one year left in the NFL. Yeah, yeah, didn't
bring Adams back with him yet, right, because it's all
(39:57):
new management. So it's not guys that Demante Adams. Yeah no, no, no,
but that what a circuitous route that would have been
for Devontam's who wanted to play with Aaron Rodgers. I
want to get you to the Raiders, but no, you
went to the Jets. So I had to leave the
Raiders to go to the Jets. Now you got kicked
off the Jets. Now I got to get back to
the Raiders while you get to the Raiders. Okay, it's
a long, convoluted plan. The third best odds is where
(40:19):
it gets really spicy. Okay, Oh well, you know, you know,
he played a cow so he's familiar with northern California.
So I think the forty nine ers might be the
that's that's a home up there. That's insane. This would
tell you how little they think of brock Purdy, that
they that they decide we're gonna go give Aaron Rodgers
(40:42):
and pay him two million dollars to play next year
and not pay you at all and avoid the Brocolypse.
Interesting philosophy. I mean, there's no way that's good. I mean,
you're getting in the silly season. He's not gonna go
anywhere to back up anybody. He's not gonna do it.
There's no way either he's already in the NFL or
he's retiring of course. Yeah, no, I like this. We'll
(41:05):
have more teams next hour on the show for Aaron Rodgers,
but straight ahead, Yeah, an NFL story last week there
was a really big deal. Might not have actually happened.
Jason and Mike Fox
