Hello, Welcome in Side hour two, Jason Smith's Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon. Yeah, live from the tire

He is the way tire buying should be. We got

(00:50):
big basketball stuff coming up. In about twenty minutes. We
could we dive into the biggest result of the weekend. No,
not the Knicks deciding we don't need to beat good team.
But h maybe maybe things are gonna happen for the
Lakers even sooner than we thought after that huge effort
against the Nuggets and the one thing people should be

(01:11):
talking about this team with Luca and Lebron that they're not.
And you sought big time on display last night. And
that's what makes the Lakers dangerous. Yes, Luca Lebron, but
there's something we're not talking enough about that you see
the Lakers last night, that's why, Hey, this is why
they're really dangerous. Dead eye shooting of Ruey Hotchimour. That's
a big deal, Austin Reeves, A big deal. Right, We

(01:33):
talked about the shooters, right, They're a very big thing.
This is what's gonna open up, right, we talked with
Luca and Lebron opening up the floor. It's gonna be
Hotchamore and Reeves are gonna wind up with wide open shots.
You're gonna see there. Three point percentage is gonna improve.
They're gonna hit more shots. Is this is kind of
what you expected from the team, But it is not,
Hatchamore and Austin Reeve. Is it the fact that JJ

(01:54):
Reddick will not have to activate himself as these guys
actually hit shots. I just keep well, yes, my buddy,
JJ Redder, I just keep thinking back to the fact,
like that scene from Major League two and when Roger
Dorn comes in and he's got the trench coat on
and he's telling all the bad news, and he says,
but here's a good news today. At eight am, I

(02:16):
activated myself and he opens up his trench coat. He's
got his Indians uniform. I was talking JJ Reddick do
that one day. I'm just coming in and I'm all,
you know, Oh well, coach, oh yo, you're playing now?
All right, great, okay, it works works. Oh but again,
we'll have that coming up in about twenty minutes. Meanwhile,
the Matthew Stafford saga just gets weirder and weirder, to

(02:39):
the point where now we're back to where we were
when it first came out that the Rams can move
on from Stafford. This weekend, you saw the bombshell that
the Rams are allowing he and his agent to look
at other teams, see if you can find a trade,
another other contract situation. You want to find another situation
that works better than this. And first thing is because

(03:02):
we get two big takes off of this. First thing
is this is exactly what we told you it was
when it broke. This wasn't Matthew Stafford's thinking about retiring.
This is not he's waffling because right after Stafford said
I don't know what I want, Sean McVeigh came out
very strongly and said, you gotta let us know soon.
We don't want to revisit last year. This is not
what we want. And right away I knew he wants

(03:23):
more money, right because his contract's coming to an maonio ohum,
five million dollars for this year. He wants more money.
He's not gonna quit, he's still playing at a really
high level. He wants more money. And that was and
you saw that point exacerbated last week when Kelly Stafford
were on a podcast saying I love Los Angeles, but
I love adventure, like okay, So both of you were
throwing down the gauntlets. So we knew this is a negotiation.

(03:45):
They want more money from the Rams, and the Rams
are saying, not gonna do it. Go out and try
to get a better deal. You get a better deal
that you know, we'll figure something out. It was real
when it happened, and it was real when it went through.
I don't know that I would I don't think I
wouldn't move on from Stafford. I would try to find
a way to make this work, because clearly the Rams
are in a win now mode. They were the they

(04:06):
should be the team in the NFL feeling the best.
Not name the Eagles after the Super Bowl because they
were closest. They were a couple of blocks or one
bad penalty away from knocking out the Eagles and getting
to the NFC Championship down. I mean, this was This
is a very big deal, right, They were the closest
team to beating the Eagles because they're really loaded on
both sides of the ball. And it wasn't even a
great Rams team. They're gonna replace Cooper Cup with DeVante

(04:29):
Adams or someone like that. This is a Rams team
that's ready to go. Do you really want to go
break in a new quarterback? I get that at some
point you need to, and the Rams reload on the fly.
I wouldn't trade Stafford. I would hold on him and think, okay,
let's try to do it one more time. But it
doesn't matter because this was this was smoke, This was fired.
This is everything. The Rams are telling you. They're not

(04:50):
gonna tell Matthew Stafford go get another deal. If they
thought they were confident one hundred percent wanted to bring
him back, they are okay with him finding some other
deal and moving on, and maybe little bit of an
itchy trigger finger for Sean McVeigh and company to move
on and say, hey, let's go get our next quarterback.
But this is absolutely real, and I can see Matthew
Stafford not coming back and pushing, pushing, pushing, and okay,

(05:11):
this is you know, what do they say about the
dog that catches the car? Hey, you did, but look
look what happened to you. Like this is Matthew Stafford
going a.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Want more and want more.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Okay, we'll let you go get what you want. Now
you're gonna go play for the Titans or the Raiders
or someplace else, and we're gonna reload and go to
the super Bowl. So yeah, they're absolutely ready to give
him what he wants. This is a real thing, and
Stafford really could get traded. This is not no longer
a negotiation. Stafford thought it was a negotiation and the
Rams said, no, it's not. You're come back to play
next year and that's it. And Stafford and Kelly Stafford

(05:38):
are upset and put out there a little bit of
two different avenue. Stafford with the hey, I don't know
what I want. Kelly Stafford saying we're ready. I'm ready
for adventure. Okay, now, be careful what you wish for,
because you're just gonna put you might get it right now. Well,
you have last season, a lot of waffling and a
lot of tiptoeing into the season, and they started terribly,

(05:59):
and yes they were banged up, but the expectation was
that you had the veteran quarterback that would help lead
you through that, Kyen Williams still putting up numbers and
doing his thing defense that got off off the field
and young and aggressive. You have two guys that you
know qualify for Rookie of the Year and all of
this stuff that you have in the infrastructure to build.

(06:21):
And I think the message of hey, make a decision
so we can get after it. I think you got
to feel really good if you're a Rams fan that
you're also not in that is Sean McVay waffling that
you did a year ago. Oh you're right, Sean McVay
seems like he's got his finger on that button going
just tell me you want out, or tell me you
got to deal with other team, and boom, I'm hitting
not Jettis, but that's what I mean like, if they're

(06:42):
ready to get on from Stafford, I'd feel much better
about my long term prospects if I'm a Rams fan
or if I'm in the organization of Okay, he's not
going to TV anytime soon. He's gonna Dable on Super
Bowl Sunday and go hang out with Glazer and the
Fox guys. But he wants to be here because otherwise
you'd be trying to ride out whatever the last vestiges

(07:03):
are of Matthew Stafford run. But the fact that you're
looking at the rest of whatever's out there in free agency,
whatever you're looking at in the draft, maybe you've identified
a guy you like there, but odds are you're you're
looking at, whether it's Rogers, whether it's Sam Darnold that
we talked with Jason locking for And that seemed to
be a fairly obvious slide over if the Vikings don't

(07:27):
put any type of tag on him, that he would
be the next guy. Remember, after all, he is only
twenty seven. We do that all the time, either if
you're really young and we think you're at a position
where all right, it's time, or you're olding being put
out the pass. There's the only time we use ages.
But all of that say, and this is where I
get to the UPHA mission, Let's move on. You're a

(07:50):
very young defense, good offense. Probably need another piece on
the old line. Always can use an extra piece on
the old line. You'll replace Cooper Cup like we said,
whether it's DeVante Adams or somebody else. Yeah, for the organization,
you're Look, the numbers were not overwhelming for step what
was he twenty and eight on the year, but the

(08:11):
last six, just like the year before, the last was
real and into the playoffs he was really But if
you played better early because you're not dancing around contracts
or sliding sliding into the quarterback needs to be there. Okay,
I think you, as a Jets fan would agree your
guys can't be off anywherever because you need to establish
afforts in Egypt with Aaron Rodgers what the hell is

(08:33):
he doing there? But the point being that games in
September matter. To go, ask Joe Burrow how he feels
about things in Cincinnati. Look, how do you feel about
having to play that game in Philadelphia? Right instead of
being in Los Angeles? But exactly right, you drop games
to the Bears and some other you know, woebe gone squads,
and all of a sudden, your path towards getting to

(08:54):
the end game is a lot harder. And I think
for this year they're going, all right, we've got a
team that could bete. Look at the division around Yes,
the division around you more or less stinks, right, Seattle
looks like they're gonna sell off everybody for par sure,
and with Gino still as the trigger man. Yeah, the
forty nine ers are gonna have to start. They're gonna
They've got a lot of money, and they got to
give Brock party money at some point, right, So it's

(09:15):
and the Cardinals of the Cardinals, and the Cardinals are
are interesting, but are they good now? And that's why
she looks And that's why Sean McVay is staying, because
he sees this window is open. They again, no one
reloads on the fly like the Rams. It is so
amazingly impressive. Like no matter what we we get out
from contracts, f them picks, whatever it was, they get

(09:35):
out and they roll on. And I'll tell you what's exciting,
because I guarantee you this, and then I'll tell you
where the Ram should go is that there's no way
they move on from Stafford, and they don't know they
know right now who their next quarterback is Sean McVay.
They know right now it's either Matthew Stafford if he
finishes this ceiling whatever it is, or it's our next guy.

(09:56):
And the more that this goes on, the more they
the more you you are able to move on from
Stafford and say okay now now instead of being ready
for both cases, then you start rooting for Okay, we're
moving on from Matthew Stafford and we're gonna go to
this because the shiny new toy just gets more and
more interesting. That's just how people's psychees go. And when
when you're saying we're good with either to either of
these two guys, eventually one guy becomes someone that Okay,

(10:19):
we don't want him that much anymore. We want the
other guy. And if Stafford's not gonna be a big
part of the future, hey, they're gonna want to move on.
So I guarantee you they know, and the minute they
trade Matthew Stafford, it will be a twofold uh situation
where they will say, we're trading Matthew Stafford to this
team for this, and we are acquiring Blank to be
our starting quarterback. Right, it's gonna be bang bang, just

(10:40):
like it was. We're trading Jared Goff. We're getting Matthew Stafford.
It's not gonna be one transaction, but they will trade
him away and they will announce their new quarterback right away.
That's how it's gonna go. Well, the other part to this,
and I joked about it with mister lock and for
last hour, is you know it's it's not that different
than what Shane did with the same Kwon Barkley situation. Right,

(11:02):
the phone call that was heard around the world, seen
on the off season hard Knocks and became the laughing stock.
Is you don't want to pay him what market is, right,
That's what Shane decided with Barkley, go out and figure
it out. Well, if you had a number, you just
get to the number. Same thing here with Matt Stafford.

(11:22):
You you're very comfortable with him walking away. Does it
potentially set you back? Is there are a lot of
work that needs to be done because you've got now
established a full new identity with another quarterback. Yeah, it
makes it harder, but you also recognize there's going to
be a marketplace for him and you and you've got
a number, right, the cap is whatever it is that

(11:43):
two seventy seven to two eighty one. You've got other
guys you need to pay. You're young in a bunch
of other places, which is great. So you can be
aggressively selective or selective aggression or whatever that cowboys term is.
It's what the Rams can do to go fill in
the pieces with stars that are out in the open marketplace.
If you don't have to commit fifties plus million dollars

(12:07):
to Matt Stafford, he's next two three whatever years he's
looking at. But you recognize at a position like quarterback,
there are a lot of starving teams. And we're talking
about Kyle McCord. Cool, that's great, but how many of
these guys are gonna be able to come in and
play day one this year? One? Maybe two of them
get to get thrown into the fire of whoever drafts

(12:29):
them out of this draft class. Otherwise it's Matt Stafford
head and shoulders of anybody else in the class except
for Sam. Now you say that maybe Sam Donald is
the next quarterback of the rent, right, Jason lock and
Forred said that last hour a couple weeks now he's
been saying, hey, they can make beautiful music together. And

(12:50):
Sean McVeagh if they can do a lot with Sam Donald.
He's younger, he's more mobile. You know, Sam Donald would
be that guy. And I would not be surprised if
that was the move was Okay, we are saying goodbye
to Matthew Stafford and we'll say hello to Sam Darnald
because the Vikings say, oh, we'll side whatever it is.
We'll get something for him, we'll transition him, We'll try
to find a way to get some kind of asset

(13:11):
for him. Uh, it's gonna be Sam Donald. But they
should go bigger. They should go bigger. And I would
call this team for him and say, hey, what if
we offered you whatever for your quarterback? Are you trying

(13:31):
to save Trevor Lawrence from Shane Walder? I am. I
will tell you who that is coming up. Now. We
got that, and we have the Lakers, the one biggest
thing that people aren't talking about coming off this win

Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven

Speaker 1 (15:16):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon Live,
and the tire rack dot Com studios got to list
on the Lakers coming up in a second but mentioned earlier. Look,
the biggest story in the NFL right now this week
are getting close to the combine. Matthew Stafford's been allowed
to go out and try to work his own trade
with other teams, the Rams saying hey, we've we've we've

(15:36):
had enough of you your wife on podcasts. We've had enough.
You can go go find another deal, and if we
finally like we will let you go, we'll say farewell
to you from the Rams. Now we know that the
most likely the way Sean McVay is talking that that
itchy trigger finger of they have their next quarterback lined up.
Who when they say goodbye to Matthew Stafford's going to

(15:58):
be Matthew walking out the door with his belonging and
the new quarterback walking in. Hey, I hold the door,
been for you, Matthew. You got that big box on
the security guard next to you. Okay, go ahead, goo
luck luck, Look and look in Vegas Aaron Rodgers and
it's the other agent. He keeps going, sniff if he's
still there, Still play here, man, alright, man sniff of

(16:19):
McGuire's there. All right, let me tell you get some tea. Man. Uh,
now you've heard the replacements. What are out there? The replacements?
The replacement Keanu is coming. Yeah, well, well he's got
to replace Martel first, and then you have Keanu. Uh
Gene Hackey. Winners want the ball, Shane, Okay, winners want
the ball?

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (16:38):
And how about to Roy from the office being the
big tight ending it's a good win spoiler. So uh
he was in the movies the tight I didn't say
what happened. I didn't have to spoil it. I didn't.
I didn't say what happened. He tries to punch Jim Halper.
We're on saying they get in a fight and and
and stopped you and Pam marries Jim. There you go. Uh,
but you've heard Aaron ros to replace Matthew Stafford. Okay, yeah,

(17:04):
that sounds great. Yeah, I don't know you've heard Sam Darnald. Okay,
all right, maybe Sam Donald twenty seven coming off a
big year. Finally, you know mcvay's a quarterback guru. Yeah, okay,
maybe he could be the guy that they have out there,
but go bigger because you want to reload with someone

(17:24):
who needs a change of scenery, a team with a
new coach that would love to be able to say, Okay,
I want to pick my new quarterback. I know the
town loves this guy, but boy, he's just not that
great and if he's ever going to really become great,
he needs to go someplace else because we saw it happen. Look, Donald,
clearly he had the pedigree. Jets don't know what they're
doing other teams up, but it worked out with the

(17:45):
Vikings when he wound up having the best weapons he
ever had. But as you as you so eloquently, you know,
you know, let the cat out of the bag a
few minutes ago. Yeah, nobody knows that story except you.
Call the Jaguars for Trevor Lawrence. Call the Jaguars for
Trevor Lawrence, and I know the story came out last
week all the Steelers beget the Jaguar. If i'm Jacksonville,

(18:08):
you have to move on. You gave him fifty five
million dollars a year. The guy's just okay. You've seen
the first four year. It's not working there. You surrounded
him with weapons, it's not working. He still throws too
many interceptions. You're not a quarterback guru. You're not suddenly
gonna come in. You had the quarterback guru come in.
You had the guy that won the Super Bowl come
in and still has not been able to elevate him
past a middle of the pack quarterback. Sean McVeigh has

(18:31):
made it work. Nobody else wanted Matthew Stafford. We'll go
get Matthew Stafford. Guess what. Won the Super Bowl extended Stafford's
prime to the point where now even out there he
might be the number one quarterback sought after in free
agency or via trade this offseason. Trevor Lawrence is a guy.
He's still young. You know what you're paying him. Don't
have to worry about it, right sign the big extension.

(18:51):
You could go out there get him, bring him in
and in the McVeigh quarterback factory. Potentially he turns into
a great franchise player. And I say this because well,
what about jack No, it's not happening in Jacksonville. It's
just not whatever you see. It's like it's the same
philosophy of oh, well, why would the Mavericks trade Luca.
Whatever Luca does with the Lakers, he wasn't gonna do

(19:12):
with Dallas. He was done. He wasn't gonna get in shape,
he wasn't gonna work on his stamina. They've worked on
him for six years. Whatever he's gonna do in La,
it's because of the change of scenery, the trade, getting
his attention, knowing full well that hey, my conditioning, my stamina,
that's out there for everybody to look at. Now, I
gotta make sure I straighten up and fly right. Whereas

(19:33):
with the Mavericks, I'm not gonna do it because they
drafted me, they pay me a lot of money. Why
would I ever have to do it. Don't listen to
him before. I'm not gonna listen to him.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Now.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
Whatever Trevor Lawrence is gonna do, oh he might be gripped,
He's not gonna do it in Jacksonville. You've seen him.
You see him as third head coach. Now it's gonna work.
I mean, another head coach coming into unlock Trevor Lawrence.
This is what you have to go and say, what's
gonna be the best part for my career. I would
say I'm open to the trade. And if I'm Jacksonville,
get out from underpaying a guy fifty five million dollars
when you're trying to start over. Okay, this is where

(20:02):
in the early part go get your next quarterback of
the future. Keep Matt Jones for now. Draft somebody out
of this year, try to make it work. Go with
Jalen Milroe, Kyle mcayil, Kyle mccordy, go to the Jets,
go with anybody else, Jackson, darr whoever. This is how
you need to do it. You've had what quote, the
best of Trevor Lawrence and it's just not going anywhere.

(20:23):
So it's time to get out from under that, save
that money and go in a new direction, new head coach.
Knew everything and then move on. And if you're the
jack and if you're the Rams, you're taking Trevor Lawrence.
You're getting draft picks. Whatever you're getting for Trevor Lawrence,
the Rams are gonna give you because ran, you know,
blank them picks. This is what I would do. I
would The first thing I would do is, Okay, I
get the maybe Darnold and you know, maybe Iron Rodger.

(20:43):
Let's call the Jaguars and let's really see about Trevor Lawrence.
So what you're saying is you've installed several guys with
RAMS ties as the leadership group in the Jaguars, all
guys that worked with Sean mcvagh for roll and round,
Sean mcvaghriels all time. It's a long Now they're gonna
just walk in there and say, here's Trevor Lawrence, right

(21:07):
because Gladstone, the new GM, was part of the RAMS staff.
And Liam Cohen, even though he's done a lot of
job hopping, Yeah, spent several years with McVeigh as well.
Nicely done. Is kind of near Mickey Mouse. But all
of that to say, that's the only part where I
think he kind of falls apart. Is if I'm the league,

(21:29):
the rest of the league, even if you don't need
a Trevor Lawrence, you're immediately going so wait a minute,
I believe that these guys that just worked for him
now trade him a guy who has once thought of
his generational Now you got Brian Thomas junior. Maybe Cohen
has an offense devise that suddenly ETN becomes the guy

(21:49):
we expected him to be, because that's the curiosity, right.
You've drafted seemingly pretty well according to the formulas and
overall consensus, and it just hasn't work out. For Trevor Lawrence.
He had that twenty one and fourteen season that seems
like like a lifetime ago. All of this still goes
back to urban Meyer. I blame urban Meyer for all

(22:10):
of the demise and the lack of Ford thinking and
ability for Trevor Lawrence to really become the guy that
we anticipated. You have Gabe Davis, you have Christian Kirks
expected to be released, so you get that money back
to go back into the free agent realm. Defensively, you've

(22:30):
had a couple of pieces, but they gave up about
twenty six points per game. Although if your offense could
stay on the field, see it's the chicken and egg thing. Sure,
how bad you offense? Yeah, versus you weren't able to
sustain a drive because your running backs weren't what's that
word good? Good? There you go. Let's try that word.
I was struggling. It was air and I saw it

(22:50):
and I into my clause, go get Trevor Lawrence. Man,
I like what you get it? Go get it. Jerry
West Kobe Bryant situation again, not saying Trevor Lawrence is
gonna Sunday become an all time great. Well, big, I
do like your theory, theory testing, Go get it. So

(23:10):
we got the Lakers coming up in ninety seconds. But
first let's find out what's trending for man who's been
called the Trevor Lawrence of Fox Sports Radio. He came
in here with all kinds of promise and has been
kind of okay the last few years. It's Steve Disager. Yeah,
I don't get those comparisons. Since I cut my hair.
I'll give you Tomorrow night.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
The Lakers will be hosting Dallas. Lakers hosts Minnesota on Thursday,
and we had the game of the Night involving the
Timberwolves tonight. They won in overtime and a comeback at
Oklahoma City, one thirty one to one twenty eight. Minnesota
trailed by twenty five in the third quarter. They were
down eighty to fifty five against a team that had
just beaten them in Minnesota late last night. Rudy Gobert

(23:49):
the Timberwolves was out again with a bad bag. Chet
Holmgren of the Thunder out tonight for Rest Shay Gilgis
Alexander thirty nine points in defeat.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Two late games.

Speaker 3 (23:58):
We got about ten seconds left at Utah Portland holding
on one eleven one oh nine now against the Jazz,
and in the third quarter at Sacramento, the Kings still
lead the Hornet sixty seven fifty five for Sacramento, Zach
Levine twenty two points. Atlanta and Denver each with wins.
Detroit won at seventh straight, beating the Clippers one oh
six ninety seven for the Clips, out again due to injuries,

(24:21):
were Kawhi Leonard and Norman Powell, and James Harden was
five of twenty two shooting with seven turnovers. Clippers lost
yesterday at Indiana. Well Detroit won its game yesterday one
forty eight to one forty three, so add up tonight's
win seven straight victories for the Pistons. Washington had lost
six in a row but beat Brooklyn tonight one oh

(24:41):
seven ninety nine. Wizards with twenty three turnovers. Attendants just
thirteen thousand, and they lost by twenty yesterday at Orlando,
but at w this time for Washington. Chicago had lost
six in a row but got to play at Philadelphia
one forty two to one ten the final. Philly has
lost eight straight ti Rayce Maxy was questionable with a
sprain finger. He did play. He was three of ten

(25:04):
shooting thirteen points. Joel Embiid is having more tests on
his knee this week. He was out tonight with knee swelling.
The seventy six ers first rounder this year is top
six protected. They're about number six in the NBA. Just
for the record. In college hoops number four Houston, it's
just one at number ten Texas Tech sixty nine sixty
one Houston Cougar sixteen and one in the Big Twelve Conference.

(25:25):
About two weeks left in the regular season, Fifteenth ranked
Michigan one at Nebraska forty nine forty six. The Wolverines
are tied for first with Michigan State in the Big Ten.
Some poor shooting each side in this game, Michigan eighteen
of sixty one from the floor, Nebraska sixteen of sixty two,
and yet Nebraska had a player Bryce Williams, who scored

(25:46):
twenty six points out of their forty six. Huskers lose
at home. Utah fired coach Craig Smith, who was in
his fourth season there after coaching Utah State, Smith is
reportedly still owed five million dollars. Stanford athletic director Bernard
Muror will reportedly resign, and women's basketball Texas is the
new number one after Notre Dame loss yesterday in double overtime.

(26:07):
Texas played tonight and won its game at Georgia fifty
seven to twenty six Georgia with only eleven field goals
made and twenty five turnovers. Only two NHL games, Winnipeg
won its tenth straight and overtime comeback win against San
Jose two to one. In fact, the team tied the
game with under thirty seconds left. The Winnipeg Jets are
the first team in NHL history to be trailing with

(26:29):
under a minute to go in regulation in consecutive games
but win both. The late game in LA has the
Kings up one nothing over Vegas.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
The Jets are so good in the clutch. Look how
good The Jets are so good?

Speaker 3 (26:43):
So good By the way, the Winnipeg Jets name was
brought up because you know Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky is going
to have his NHL scoring record broken soon by Alex Ovechkins.
So I looked it up and the NHL does not
count Gretzky's rookie year. That's almost fifty goals that they
just away because it was right before the merger when
the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oiler sent a couple others Hartford,

(27:06):
New England Whalers as they were known, and.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
Beg Gordy Howe playing at fifty one was playing in
the h Yes, absolutely so when co can start wrapping
up some assists along the way.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Something of an asterisk to the Ovechkin. It's it's inevitable
to the record breaker that is coming. He's only thirteen
goals away.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
Thank you, Steve, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon live from Thetirack
dot Com studios. Now, when we last left you, we
talked about the Lakers and boy, how do you come
up that small against two terrible teams and combined twenty
seven and eighty on the season. Well, they answer all
the critics on Saturday with a huge win over the
Denver Nuggets. Right, and we talked about the Lakers, said Okay,

(27:48):
you just got to be a little bit more patient,
because clearly Luca needs a little bit more time to
quote round into shapes. They're rounded the shape. Are you
fat shaming? No, I'm saying he's not got to get
in shape. Gotta get in shape, right, Sam, I got
again shape?

Speaker 2 (28:03):
You take one.

Speaker 1 (28:05):
Maybe I've been to PhD for like two months work
and all of a sudden you feel like you can fast.
I'm just looking in the mirror before you start fast. Mary, Wow, Wow, Okay, Okay, Mary,
all right, she had a good run. People to fire
Mary mac Okay, you can't do that. Remember until March.

(28:27):
March first. I don't think that's how it works. But
here's the deal with what we saw Saturday. Yes, Luca
was great and Lebron was terrific, And as we said
a few minutes ago, the big beneficiaries in this offense
is going to be Hotchamora and Reeves. They're gonna have
a lot of guys gonna score the Lakers store one
hundred and thirty points a game. This is a Nuggets

(28:49):
team that has now won ten of their last eleven.
They had a big win streak until they lost to
the Lakers. Their point totals. As we've said, hey for
the Nuggets, don't make any moves the deadline. You're getting healthy.
Everything is great, right, all your guys are back, everything.
The offense is really humming along. One hundred and thirty
seven points, one hundred and twenty five, hundred and forty four,
one twelve, one twenty two, one forty six, one thirty two,

(29:12):
one twenty nine, one hundred, one hundred points against the
Lakers on Saturday. The Lakers since the calendar flipped to
twenty twenty five, which tells you that probably, hey, maybe
a d was a guy, we really might not have
needed that much. The Lakers are the number one team
in the NBA defensive metrics, number one team in the

(29:35):
NBA defensively since basically the calendar flip from twenty twenty
four to twenty twenty five. This is what needs to
be talked about a little bit more. And you say
you take a team adding Luca is going to get
better defensively, well, yeah, look at where the Lakers are.
Jokic had seven field goal attempts on on Saturday, and yes,
he had a triple double, and he was able to
set up a lot of plays but the Nuggets can't

(29:57):
win like that. You can't win when if Yokich has
a Jason Kid triple double of thirteen, eleven and twelve,
you're not gonna win the Jason you can't have. I'm
barely getting the double digits in points. And you ever
trademark that no I would do that ten, ten and ten,
the Jason Kid triple double ten ten ten. But you
watch the Lakers defensively just absolutely discombobulate the Nuggets on Saturday,

(30:21):
that's a thing. It's not like they're playing second night
of back to back. They had played Thursday night and
they had one against Charlotte going away, they had a
day off. The Lakers defensively, this is the This is
the biggest thing, because this is what's gonna make them
and continue to vault them in. I'm telling you they're
gonna finish second in the Western Conference too much to
overtake the Thunder, who seemingly lose once every three and

(30:42):
a half weeks. But they'll wind up finishing second and
they're gonna be a huge title threat, and everybody's gonna say,
oh my goodness, the way get that Lakers Thunder series,
Oh get that first round series the Lakers and the MAVs,
because look, they're gonna play tomorrow night, but AD's not
gonna play. But this Lakers team defensively watch I know
it's not set. I know it's not something that you know, hey,
it's less talking about luc and Lebron, But defensively, the

(31:05):
Lakers have figured something out over the course of the
past few weeks and this is what will carry you. Yeah,
gonna be great when they start scoring one hundred and
thirty points a game, but defensively they have hit that
new level. And I'm sure this was part of what
caused them to say, hey, you know, maybe we can
you know, maybe a D I think we're gonna be okay.
Whatever plan they had coming in, whatever Reddick and companies say,

(31:27):
you know what, I think if we do X, Y
and Z, we're gonna be okay. Defensively, you saw it
clearly over the course of the past few weeks. And
that's the funny thing is, you know, the big concern
when you have Luca and Lebron together is that you're
going to have that defensive fallof and to this point,
through eighteen games, over the last eighteen games, fourteen to four.

(31:47):
This is Jovon bo Rich for the Athletic covering the
Lakers number one, defense, number eight, offensive rating, number three net.
And in that period you've got wins over Boston, Denver,
the Knicks, the Clipper, and twice the Warriors. Now I
like that. Nikola Jokicic came out and said, you know,
I think we were all reading our own press clippings

(32:08):
because you look at their schedule over this win streak,
not particularly strong. Take nothing away from what the Lakers
just did, but also just to look in the mirror
kind of moment, you can only play who's on the schedule.
One of the show mantras, we have many, but that one,
that one is a truism, but it also maybe lulls
you into a false sense of how well a team

(32:29):
is rolling when you're playing in portland's been playing better,
but New Orleans is trash and you can check off
a number of their their wins. But for the Lakers,
it's just a curiosity to see for the final twenty
three twenty four games of this season. You know what
that looks like when you how much depth of that

(32:49):
depth kind of like you're lamenting with your mix, which
we need to at some point, Yeah, we get to
you maybe have a funeral for where that team. We'll
get to that store. But night to night, you know
the ebb and flow of an NBA season about how
much effort you're getting on a nightly basis. Well, for
this Lakers squad, you know that was going to be

(33:09):
one of the concerns, right how do you read game
to game, especially the losses that they've taken, But you
take those as blips. I think when you look at
when it is prime time and the lights get bright,
they show up.

Speaker 2 (33:22):
Now.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
I really wish Anthony Davis would be available for tomorrow's
game against the Mavericks that everybody is starting to hype.
So it's not quite the same. Gafford's not there because
when you look at them at full strength, it's all
about their front line and then Kyrie running the show.
So we won't get that tomorrow. But again, when the
lights are brightest, the Lakers have risen to the occasion
every damn time. And for JJ Reddick right now, he's

(33:45):
got to be feeling pretty good about where they are.
As they try to get Luca to round out into
the player he will be on or off the ball,
with Lebron James being giddy calling them, you know, saying
I'm a great wide receiver really to play football, I'll
tell you. Uh, it's one thing to say, well maybe

(34:06):
the but to what what JJ Reddick said, He spent
so much time on this game plan and they just
kept throwing different looks at at at Nikola jokicch and
making him uncomfortable and making him make big decisions. And
sometimes they'll double him, sometimes they'd front him. It really
was something. It really was something to watch. I'm telling
you it's not again, it's not sexy, but boy, it's what.

(34:27):
Let's catch you. The champion defense wins championship. What did
I tell you? Coming up next?

Speaker 3 (34:33):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (34:34):
Yeah, one NFL team wants the Tush Push Band. Wait
do we tell you who it is? Jason and Mike

Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven

Speaker 1 (34:51):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon
live from the tire Rack dot Com Studios and uh
and then anonymous story earlier today, Big NFL Week at
the Combine Coming up we'll get to a big story
involving the Cowboys coming up in a few minutes. But
an unnamed team let it be known they want the

(35:14):
Tush Push, which is run by the Eagles and now
the Bills to an expert level. They want that play
band by the NFL. We've talked about this the last
few years, been three years now, the Toush Push. The
Thief Eagles have been running that. The Bills figure out
a way to do it with Josh Allen. The Toush
Push succeeds for those two teams like eighty some odd

(35:34):
percent of the time, where it's like sixty percent for
the rest of the NFL. And one team, an unnamed team,
said yeah, we don't want we don't want the touch push.

Speaker 3 (35:44):
Hm.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Well, I wish we put the people in charge of
this in charge of who didn't vote for each row,
because we found out few hours later it was the
Green Bay Packers. Yeah, it didn't take much super suitos,
not enough of that. Whoever was there was all right,
I'll tell you it's the Packers. The Packers want the
Toush Push band by the NFL. Now, first I'll tell
you is this, If I'm the NFL. I say, I'll

(36:06):
do it. Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. I'll do it.
But you gotta do something for me. What anyhow, we'll
band a touch push? Yeah, what do you want? You
have to take Aaron Rodgers back? Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoao. No, no,
I'll ban the touch push You take Aaron Rodgers back
for this season? Do we have to start him? You

(36:29):
just have to take him back. Whatever you want. As
long as he's on the team, that's all we care about.
Let's see if you want the touch push band after that? Huh,
here you go. You want it? You're gonna give me
something quick pro quote. You scratch my back, I'll scratch
yours many Yeah. Now, Mark Murphy had been quoted whining

(36:51):
about this a while back. Yeah, so, I don't think
it really took a lot of I'm not a fan
of this play. There's no skill involve that's almost an
automatic first down and plays of a yard or less.
Yet no team does it anywhere near as successfully as
the Eagles. I mean, there's no teams run quarterback sneaks
all the time. It takes no skill. Well, haf that

(37:12):
dot takes no skill. Fourth and one up the middle
for halfield that takes no skill. There used to be
a rule prohibiting this, but it's no longer enforced because
I believe it was thought to be too hard for
the officials to see. The play is bad for the
game and we should go back to prohibiting the push
of the runner. Now, I will say it's not far
off from the leverage play that is outlawed in the

(37:33):
kicking game. But in the end, if we're that easy,
every team would be able to do it. At this point,
we've got no data to suggest that you've seen a
giant run of injuries off of this, right, you don't
have a bunch of guys. Wow, he was heard on
a tush push. This is what felled him. No, Like,

(37:54):
none of that works, So until then, shut up and
learn to stop it. Look, and that's what I get it.
You're in the NFC with the team that you're gonna
meet in the playoffs. If you get there, you can
do it too. If it doesn't take any skill, why
can't you do it? That's it. If it takes no skill,
why can't you do it? Right, This is that point
in the movie, and nobody knows who this team is
hang got it's the Packers. I just found it. Well,

(38:16):
how long did that take you? Four seconds? I just
found it. It's the Packers. It's the Packers. Uh. If
you were to show me that there was, if you
had some kind of documentations that listen, we see with
a push push, this is what the injury rate is
in the NFL, and it's much larger than it is
on quarterback sneaks, other fourth and short plays. Whatever you
want to say, then I would say, all right, now,
the NFL's got a look at this because this needs

(38:37):
to be the health of the players. But until you
could show me that because they come up with a
play that works, we shouldn't be able to do it
like this. This is just jealousy, Like I, we don't
know why we figured out that you could do it
better than not. So let's ban it. Let's not have
it anymore. You could do it if you wanted to. Yeah,
I'd rather be banned. I don't want to put any
more work into doing it because we can't do it
as good as you guys. Okay, Mark Murphy tell Jordan

(38:59):
Love not to skip leg day. Okay, Jalen Hurts squat
six hundred pounds a lot of push just from him,
let alone what he's getting. By the way, Saguon Barkley,
I was talking to someone earlier asking me and it
was like, well, what happened in that game? It's like, well,
they used him, they ran clock. Here's how you do that.
They don't really understand a lot of football. And I go,
by the way, that guy made several blocks that were

(39:21):
instrumental in them winning the game. Nobody's going to talk
about that. Yeah, but in this case, go figure out
how to run it yourselves. Go invest in more offensive linemen,
figure out how to do it or put yourself in
a position to where you know what that matters right
where you need to execute a third and two instead
of a third and six. How about that? Yeah, go

(39:42):
figure that out. But what's what's the next thing to say, Well,
you we don't have a quarterback like Josh Allen, so
we we we should have that play band. Oh that's
what you want to ban all his touchdown passes too,
and the fact that when he can run the ball
on third and six and follow a guard, let's bat's
let's ban all the good plays and other team makes
because my team still and then we'll even the playing field.

(40:03):
By the way, teach your wide receivers how to catch.
Maybe you'll be at third and ones. Maybe you won't
even need them. How about that they led the league
and drops, by the way, with all that depth, that
wide receiver that we kept extolling the virtues of. Maybe
maybe you work on some of those fundamentals, and then
the tush push thing really isn't on your radar. Good
