(01:41):
Day one in NFL Free agency did not disappoint. We
had big quarterback signings.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
We stend.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Here's the best part is that, like I almost feel
like there's a script for NFL Free agency that maybe
Arian Foster's got to show us, because like we had
big names and stuff on the first day, and there's
still big names ready that are out there that were
big stories for the second day, right like today we
got Justin Fields and Sam Darnold. We still have Aaron
Rodgers and Russell Wilson and Daniel Jones to go, like,

(02:08):
I feel like we're gonna parse it out, like over
the next couple of days. Oh yeah, we got a
couple of the first day, a couple of second day,
couple of thirdy.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
We're good, well and it works out really well and
equates to the WWE universe. Here's a bunch of the
NXT guys getting signed and getting their opportunity. Justin Fields,
he's been around a minute, you know him, but he
hasn't gotten that big superstar turn just yet. Whereas with
Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson and whatever else, Domino's Fall,

(02:33):
with Captain Kirk and everybody else, that's that's the CM
Punk's rock and seen us. We've seen him for a minute.
What are they gonna do next to try to excite
us and make some final turn in their careers? You
know what I did?

Speaker 1 (02:47):
I see I like that. I like the t the
heel turn. I don't know, I don't want to see
Justin Field's turn heel as well. I'm gonna start throwing interceptions,
but that's what you've been doing.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
No, but now hey, no, no, no, he took care
of the football.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
He did.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
He did not with the Steelers. Yes, we talking about
this though, where you're way too cautious. I got a
window that that's an NFL window, buddy, that's you gotta
take that one there.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
I was really excited and I still am excited about
justin fields. Maybe because the last couple of years of
expectations with the Jets, I've had enough of going okay,
and they I had four snaps from Aaron Rodgers and
then this year was was awful.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
Well, the worst part of it for you, though, was
everybody jumped on board. So it became this huge thing
as opposed to you just you know, hoping against hopes.
Hey whatever, this quarterback situation is, whatever roster we've assembled,
we're gonna end up overachieving. Instead, it became the all right,
that's the sexy pick to go to the AFC title

(03:47):
game or dare I say, actually find a way to
play in a Super Bowl. Yeah. That became pervasive throughout
the land, and which made it worse for you.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
No, no, no, I was okay with that because I haven't
had that in like over, like in twenty ten, twenty
levin the first couple of years for Rex Ryan when
we went to back to back AFC Championship games, which
I feel like I'm talking about the nineteen thirties, Like.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
That was fun, right, I like that.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
No, we haven't had anything, we haven't been to the
playoffs since then, but so it was like, Okay, I
liked it for a couple of years, but kind of now.
I look, I love the direction the Jets are going.
I love Aaron Glenn, Darren Mucci is a great GM.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
He's already made moves.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
But I only knew you through I just keep thinking
of that line from Seinfeld, I only knew you through Mucci.
Come on, but getting Justin Fields and again, I always
I like Justin Fields more than the average NFL pundit
NFL fan does because he's a guy that's never really
gotten a chance. Are we talking about this? As Jason
locking for earlier in the show, He's always someone that
since he came into the league, has done it looking

(04:43):
over his shoulder and instead of saying, Okay, do your thing,
because you're you're a guy, we can't make you into something.
Go do your thing. Be a great running quarterback, and
hopefully we can get enough of throwing into you where
you're successful enough, but you don't lose the guy you
are right, You don't lose being that guy, because that's

(05:05):
what that's why we drafted you that early. And after
his first year, the Bears tried to beat it into
him about you have to do this, this, this Now
suddenly we're looking over our shoulder. Is Justin Field's even
coming back? He goes to the Steelers and it's you
gotta take care of the football. Don't turn it over.
Don't turn it over. There's no quarterback in the history
of the game that has ever succeeded when he's told
number one, don't turn over the football. Right, Why do

(05:27):
you think Zach Wilson sucked in New York Because all
that Robert Salad told him was don't turn the football over.
You can't do that to a quarterback whose job it
is to take chances to go downfield. That's just stupid. Right,
Twy'd be a great head coach. I would not tell
you don't turn the ball over. So now here's a
two year, twenty million deal for Justin Fields. We thought
this was coming for the last twenty four hours, a
lot of momentum built on it, and with two years

(05:49):
and thirty four million guaranteed, he's gonna get the chance
this year. It is his offense doesn't mean the Jets
aren't gonna fill their quarterback room. And this move is
gonna look even better because I guarantee you their second
round pick will be a quarterback, whether it is Kyle McCord,
please make it happen, Jalen Milroe. They will take a
quarterback early and they're gonna say, okay, here's Justin Fields,

(06:10):
who we think maybe for a year or two, if
he's really good, we got our guy, and if not,
we have our next developmental guy. Right, Okay, this is
this is gonna work. So I love they did that,
but they're gonna turn him over and say, go do
your thing, right, Go do your thing, Go be the
quarterback that we thought you were. Run for a thousand
yards and it's gonna be do The Jets have never
had a quarterback like this, right, instead of worrying about, hey,

(06:31):
how's our offensive line going to legally protect a guy
that doesn't get out of them?

Speaker 3 (06:36):
And I say legally, l e ak, not legally.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Like legally, I'd like to be able to sue some
guys for how they let guys get the defensive ends
of the into the back.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
Class action lawsuit led by Jets fans. Let's go, I'm
write it for the new episode of suits La.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Let's go Jason Smith versus Morgan Moses, Mackai Beckton. So
now it's different. Right, they fix the offensive line a
little bit. The final thing that Joe Douglas and on
his way out last year, the offensive line finally has
a little bit of stability. Right, you got three or
four starters back that are young, that are talented. Now
you have someone that doesn't quite need you to say, hey,

(07:10):
we need you to protect for how long? Fourteen seconds?
That's how long Rogers needs to throw the football fourteen
seconds and we're good. So now you don't need that.
He brings an added dynamic and it's refreshing and it's
a new type of energy, and already the Jets are
energized by it. Garrett Wilson, who you thought was gonna
be a guy going out the door not wanting to stay,

(07:30):
liking the social media post when he found out Fields
got traded or signed with the Jets, for two years.
He's excited on board now and now your offensive weapons
that you were worried about a year ago, now suddenly
you don't have a lot of holes. You're starting to
make other moves in free agency. Yeah, I'm excited about
Justin Fields, and I think as long as you let
him be the guy. You gotta let quarterbacks be you

(07:52):
they are. That's the number one thing. And that's why
when Rogers came in, this is what I want. Okay,
you gotta give it to him because he knows how
to win. He knows what he wants. All quarterbacks, you
gotta do that for You gotta do. You gotta give
Josh Allen exactly what he needs and what he wants.
You got to give Lamar Jackson what he needs and
what he wants. You gotta let him be who he is.
You can try to bang out the dents a little bit,
but you can't change him and say, Okay, this year

(08:13):
we're gonna make him a great pocket quarterback. No, because
trying to become a great pocket quarterback is gonna take
away from the dual threat that he is. So as
long as you do that, Justin Fields will be successful.
And I mean I get that. That's where I'm at
now in jets Land and jets them where I can say,
getting Justin Fields makes me really excited. I mean, really,
the bar is so low, it's so low that that

(08:33):
gets me excited.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
But still, yeah, I like it now. I'm maxed out.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
When it happened today, I was really excited, Like, all right,
of the three guys out there, the three best quarterbacks
out there in free agency. Again, it's not great guys
to choose from, but if you need a quarterback, I'm sorry,
this is the best of what they have. Like if
you need a gallon of milk, Uh, they don't have
the gallon of milk where the expiration date is like
next week, it's like in four days. But if you
need milk, you gotta buy it, right, you gotta. The

(08:57):
three best guys were Darnald, Justin Fields, and Daniel Joe
And of those three, you're not bringing Sam Darnold back.
You just watch Daniel Jones get run out of New
York with the Giants. So really it's just if you're
gonna get a better quarterback and be and have an
upgraded quarterback, it's Justin Fields. And they went out and
got him, and I liked, and I've already talked myself
into a ten win season that's gonna be a roller

(09:17):
coaster of emotions and fields making big plays. And Breese
Hall busted off big runs and and and he and
and Breescee Hall looking like Vince Young and Chris Johnson
from the Titans back in the late auts. I mean,
I've remember, I've talked as you said there, except they
only ran like six plays.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
And I don't know how you stop six plays six.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
Plays operational efficiency, execution.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
How are we gonna win the state championship? We're gonna
run a triple reverse pass down the field.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
So I I.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
I've already bought into that. I have bought into the
dark Horse wild card season for the Jets at ten
and seven. Like that's my mantra. Now, like that's my say.
Last year was Super Bowl or bust. Now on dark
Horse wild Card, that's where I am.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
I'm immediately going to find the AFC East odds. So
let's see Vegas Insider Division winner Buffalo minus three hundred,
Miami at plus four and a quarter, New England anywhere
from plus seven hundred to plus twelve hundred, and the
Jets anywhere from plus nine hundred to plus sixteen hundred.

(10:24):
If you shop around a little bit, find yourself a
bit of value. By the way, you mentioned Josh Allen,
we got to give him a nod here. The new
contract play get ahead of the game because the salary
cap and cost a quarterbacks keeps going up. Here, have
a bunch of money up front, but the dollar cost
averaging and average values get you there. They also brought

(10:44):
in Palmer, who we went to watch out here, so
that's a nice move. But for justin Fields. Yeah, I
joked earlier right with the Bears and all the offensive
line moves like, yeah, you know, if you'd actually built
the infrastructure a few years ago, it would be nice
to see where he would go. Yeah, and you have
seen this before. You have seen this type of offense,

(11:05):
and I like to think fields will be better in it.
But you remember what Tim Tebow was running around for
the Jets. The occasional downfield pass, but a lot of scrambling.
So we have seen that before. Now he needs to
wear number fifteen. But all of that to say, look,

(11:26):
go make sure you're short up at tight end. Have
a guy who's a safety valve. For him. Get another
guy alongside Wilson. Wilson already knows how to do the
improvisational stuff with Fields, which is a great advantage when
we're talking about this, But it still comes down to
can you work on time? Right? Can you figure out

(11:46):
a way to be on script in a division that
Buffalo reinvested in defense? Right, made some moves Bernard and
Russo come back. Von Miller is gonna probably come back
on a lower deal. Miami made some moves to four
to five their O line and and to build out
there still still some work to be done, uh, quite obviously.

(12:09):
And then New England with with Mike Rabel that they
got a lot of stuff going on and a lot
of money to spend. Uh So it's an uphill climb.
But get another weapon for Fields and get him to
to work. Look, he got away from Arthur Smith, so
he already is.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Well, you've already won the day, You've won the day,
And already he's he's in Dubai.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
Did you see the video of him.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
I saw that he's out at dinner somewhere, and and
and the deal goes down, and like the the weight
staff like but set off.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Like Sparklers and fireworks.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
In the restaurant. Like I want to go to Dubai
just to have one of those restaurants. Crazy, like they're
all singing songs for like they wouldn't do that in
New York. They're doing that in Dubai.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
For Justin Field.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Oh, it's fantastic the celebration and fire up. I've only
had that happen that one restaurant in my life. It
was it was an odd place in the mall down here.
All of a sudden, I had a sparkler birthday thing
for the kid. Oh scared the hell out of me
because I was waiting for like something to you know,
go shooting off into the rest of the restaurant. But

(13:08):
but for Justin Fields, you know, I remain hopeful. And
if we're gonna do the Hey, Sam Darnold's still only
age X right, what he did he turn twenty eight
yet either twenty seven or twenty eighth. We we have
to be fair to Justin Fields. The same thing that
all it takes is one shot and you saw a
microcosm now where some of the metrics great, No again,
pushing the ball down field is something that is gonna

(13:31):
have to be emphasized in this new look Jets offense
to just say, hey, mistakes are okay. We need to
press the you know, push the envelope here if we're
actually going to rise above some of the you know,
other issues on the roster and compete in some of
these games against higher scoring teams like Buffalo.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Oh, man, I'm telling you, I like it.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
You.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
I can't wait to see. I can't wait to see
the back breaking runs in the fourth quarter when Fields
tucks it under.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
You know he's gonna run it.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
How do you, hey McDermott, how do you let him
run for a first time? I just can't wait. I
can't wait. I can't I'm excited. I'm so excited about
for more losses.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
I'm so excited. I'm so dumb more wins. Sure he
does ten and seven.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
If nothing else, justin it'll be entertaining for us.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
For us, Yes, but what about for Jason's eyes?

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Well, I mean he gets to do a bunch of burmanisms.
Whether Fields picks up the first down, he'll be doing
a lot of whoop.

Speaker 5 (14:29):
He just got paring Jets games of the years. I
already got him right here the year. Yeah, Zach Wilson.
This is starting for the Dolphins against the Jets twice.

Speaker 4 (14:37):
That's inevitable, right, That's.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
The how come every single quarterback that's made news so
far has either been with the Jets at some point
or is just traded to the Jets. Every single guy
in the news was a Jet or just came to
the Jets.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Like, really, that's how it goes?

Speaker 4 (14:53):
Man center of the football universe. What can I say?

Speaker 1 (14:56):

Justin Justin, Justin Field, Justin, Justin, Justin Fields, Justin, Justin,
Justin Fields. That could be the song Justin Justin, Justin,
Justin Fields. Alberto Albert Hubooff Justin, Justin, Justin, Justin justin.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
He just celebrated twenty five years this week of the
Last Resort by Papa Roach.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
That soung is twenty five years old. This is too
March seven, twenty five years old. Oh wow, that is wow.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
I didn't I did not know. If you asked me,
Papa Roach that I would have said on maybe twenty ten,
twenty five, that songs twenty five years old.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
Oh I'm old man, I'm old. Yeah you will, Yeah,
I can. Now, what do you want to talk now?

Speaker 4 (17:23):
Now?

Speaker 1 (17:24):
I'm now I'm depressed. And you know, also watching Ogano
Noobi get injured a few minutes.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
Ago, Yeah, that was not great. That's definitely broke.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
It looked like he turned his ankle again going in
for a layup. He came out of the game. The
knickser or crushing the Kings right now, eighty seven sixty six.
But this is this is like the playoffs last year,
except instead of liked over the course of of of
like well, it is over the course of like three games.
Everybody's getting at Jalen Brunson. Then it's I don't know,
but that's a I mean, it's a at. You guys

(17:53):
didn't lose to the Nets no, that's true. This is
a bad Laker loss. You had a bad loss today. Man,
You're lucky. You're just lucky that Davante Adams is a
Ram and Najie Harris is a Charger. So like the Hey,
the Lakers losing to the Nets really isn't the biggest
story here.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
They didn't have Lebron.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
Yeah, they also didn't have Wilt, they didn't have Kareem,
didn't have Magic.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
Kind of had a cloak of invisibility on for much
of the game, at least his shooting gig. You realize
he's shooting forty one percent since joining the Lakers.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Yeah, yeah, Will, No, that was Wilt from the free
throw line.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
No, no, no, that was that was forty one percent accuracy
and efficiency of his pickup lines.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Yeah, that was him on the cla dude, I don't
think Wilt was at forty one percent with pickup lines. Man,
he was one hundred and forty one. He was like
the Steve Nash of the free throw line. He was
like up over the ninety percent.

Speaker 4 (18:45):
I think he shot a lot of a lot of
shots because people got scared.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
I don't know how scared you get. I mean, it's
Wilt Shorts. It was over.

Speaker 4 (18:56):
It's not everybody, it's Wilton Shorts.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
I gotta go.

Speaker 4 (18:59):
Hey, you know your benches scored seven points to night. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Well, at least look and Unoby looks like he's coming
back in the game. So that's good.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
All right, So but I mean, man, I'll tell you
he's your high point.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
Man.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
What's twenty yeah, yeah, yeah, well listen nix yea. Uh
so look day one of NFL Free Ags. We talked
about justin fields of the Jets. Two years, twenty million
Jets are going.

Speaker 4 (19:17):
To the playoffs twenty million each, Sam.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
Darn Yeah, well sorry, twenty million each, forty million and
thirty four million guarantee for Justice four. So you know
he's got to telling you man, ten and seven playoffs.

Speaker 4 (19:28):
I see. I like the contract for that that size right, Yes,
the scope. You're not pot committed because if it goes
to hell, you say beat it.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
I don't mind a lot of money for a couple
of years and when you can get out of it.
I don't mind that. The big deal is a lot
of money for a lot of years.

Speaker 4 (19:43):
That's that's a lot of money that's not.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Good, But a lot of money for not a lot
of time. Okay, great, I want to be it.

Speaker 4 (19:49):
We like that out of our contracts, not for the
guys on your team.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
I gotta be able to get out of that.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
But Sam Darnold, now, in a move that was widely
expected since the Seahawks tank sorry traded Geno Smith to
the Raiders over the weekend, Sam Donald to the Seahawks
three years and just over one hundred million dollars. So
do I? I said, Sam Donald's the number one guy

(20:16):
in available in free agency. And the three guys that
you want to get now that you see are gaining
more and more importance. Sam Donald with that contract, Justin
Field's on day one gets a gig. And now I
love the Diana Rossini part of the report where the
world is waiting on Daniel Jones's decision. Like, really, I
told you last week as by this time next week,

(20:36):
who were gonna be so sought after seeing their stocks rise?
Those three quarterbacks, right, that's where we are, and today
two of them signed and one of them was Donald.
The move to the Seahawks. It's this is gonna sound weird.
You're like, you like Justin Fields, But Sam Donald, I
feel just kind of mad for Donald to the Seahawks. Right,
Like the Seahawks, they made a move because they felt

(20:59):
they had to. Right, Gino Smith has been really good.
And we'll get to Gino Smith and the Raiders coming
up in a bit. But Gino Smith has been really good.
He's thirty four, and they were gonna have to pay
him at some point again and they didn't want to.
So we're gonna go get a quarterback that was really
good last year and is seven years younger. And Okay,
maybe we catch lightning in a bottle. So from that perspective,

(21:21):
I like it. Look, you gotta take a chance when
you need a quarterback, and especially in a free agent class.
Maybe Sam Donald is still good. Maybe he turns back
into Sam Darnald. But coming off of last year, Okay,
if you have weapons, I can see where you believe
in Sam Donald and Donald had a great weapon, and
justin Jefferson last he's gonna have a big one in
Jackson Smith and Jigba who is not the same receiver.
He's more of a possession guy than a target monster.

(21:42):
But still you have weapons there in Seattle, right, You're okay,
But overall I see that and I just go yeah
to Seattle. Doesn't really move the needle for me on
Donald because it's not like he's suddenly going to take
them and turn them from a periphery playoff team into
a super Bowl contender. He's gonna take the Seahawks from

(22:03):
a periphery playoff team to a periphery playoff Teamcause people
forget that Gino Smith was pretty good, right, pretty good
the last few years. He's alternately solid and dynamic. He
have big games. So yeah, this is like, hey, we
got a quarterback, and what they did was we just
traded in a quarterback and we got younger. Okay, so
still the same, but we just got younger on it.

(22:25):
So I'm okay with it. I look, I'd like to
love to give you a hot take on Sam Donald,
tell you this is the greatest move ever. This is
the worst thing in the world. But again, I'm just
kind of men. I'm like, yeah, okay, this is this
is okay, it's okay for the Seahawks. Doesn't preclude them
from drafting a quarterback or going another draft way, but
now you've gotten your guy for the next year or two,
and you really went all in on him, and Okay,

(22:45):
I'd like to have. I'd like to have more to say,
but that's not enough to get them over the Rams.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
It's not.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
I mean, who knows where the forty nine ers are
gonna be coming off when they get done reconfiguring their team.
The Cardinals are just getting better.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
You know.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
They made a big move that you like earlier today too,
So I don't know that this suddenly buys him anything
more than we're gonna get decent production, but you know,
for the next three years, and the quarterback is younger,
with a little bit more upside. Like I said, I
like it. It's fine, but I can't. I can't fake
the more excitement on Darnald to the Seahawks.

Speaker 4 (23:19):
Yeah, there was one other move I really love that
we we haven't touchdown. It's shown up in the update briefly,
but we'll get to that as the show goes on.
I just don't the thing that just when I look
at Sam Darnold coming into this situation, he's reunited. Kubiak
did he did Kubiak know they were stripping all this away?
Like I'm excited. Look what I got to work with.

(23:41):
Oh wait, no, one don't no, one, don't look Tyler
Lockett go go team him up over in Pittsburgh. Make
him the possession guy for those two deep threats alongside Friarmouth,
and make that happen. But for Seattle, you let de
Kay go and he goes to Pittsburgh in that deal

(24:01):
that you get the second rounder, fine, and then you
swap sixth and sevens. But it's the idea of you
brought in Sam Darnold, who's greatest strength is what pushing
them all downfield. What did you do? Hey, DK, you're
going to Pittsburgh. I know he wanted out, you didn't
want to pay him the money, but it takes away
what would have been a fantastic asset for the quarterback

(24:23):
that you just brought in in terms of the style
of game that he has. In the end, you saved
seven or eight million dollars based on the reports. And
we'll get into Gino's deal and what it means for
the Raiders in a minute. But for Seattle, yeah, going
to Bobo's your starter right now. I gotta think that
you're going into the draft and looking around and poking

(24:46):
at a couple of wide receivers. Early, plenty of guys
have been displaced, so you can rebuild that room fairly easily,
I think. But all in, you've got a couple of
good running backs and need another piece or two on
your offensive line, and defensively there's some gaps. You know,
it's currently the the Rams and everybody else. And I

(25:07):
don't know that Sam moves the needle. But you got
that third round pick for Gino, so you got that
to work with as well. So I guess it's a
work in progress. So we'll see what Schneider can do,
uh to finish it off and make Sam a winner.

Speaker 1 (25:21):
Yeah, I mean again, And that's more of a microcosm
of why I feel like the move is. Okay, they'll
kind of sort of be the same team because you thought, oh, okay,
they're moving on from DK Metcalf, which they need to
because he clearly is no longer the alpha in that offense.
You know, Smith Njigbit is a phenomenal wide receiver, right, Okay,
So I get it right. So we're doing that and
you're getting assets. Okay, I see what we're doing for
this year. They're gonna sign a get by guy and

(25:43):
and and the March for Arch. But no, no, no, Now,
we're gonna spend money on Sam Donald. Wait a minute, well, boy,
you really would have liked to keep dk met because
maybe DK Metcalf turns out to be his guy. Don't
you want to give your quarterback coming in as many
weapons as you can because we saw Sam Donald thrive
when when he had great weapons. Right, Jordan Addison is
kind of taking a step back, but he's still a

(26:05):
terrific weapon. And Justin Jeffers is the best wide receiver
in the NFL. So okay, you trade your your your
former number one wide receiver, you could at least maybe
be a co number one in a new offense. But instead, no,
now we go get our quarterback. So I really I
feel like they're just moving pieces around like it's a
it's a it's a It's like on a fantasy team

(26:26):
where a guy makes a bunch of trades. Owner makes
a bunch of trades and thinks he's making the team better.
You look at it and go, oh, it's kind of
the same team. It's just different people, right, Like, I
don't know what the Seahawks aim is here. I don't
know if it. Are you starting starting over completely? Are
you kind of reloading on the fly? Are you tanking
and and it's the mixed messages that keep coming out
of this because the whole metcalf into this scratchhead and go,

(26:47):
wait a minute, what's what's trying to happen here again?
I'd love to be more excited about I'd love to
have a hot take on it. I'd love to be
more Oh, this is the greatest Sam Darnold forget you
got him away from the Jets and look out Grady Is.
I'd like to say Sam Donald stinks. I told you
the last two weeks that's who he was, Sam Donald stinks.

Speaker 3 (27:04):
But instead it's one the softiest face.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
Okay, ok add the softiest face.

Speaker 4 (27:11):
Yeah, I'd be kind of curious to see what Softy
had to say, right, I mean, you save some money
on the salary. You take a shot that Sam scratched
the surface, right, because coming out of usc all the
expectations goes to the Jets. We don't need to belabor

(27:33):
the point there had his cup of coffee in competency
before going to Minnesota and thriving last year, and so
now it's that no man's land all those years that
he was not good or you know, you just say
he was a good teammate. He was a good teammate. Mean,
he learned, he was a quick study. All of that.

(27:55):
That's fine. That that wasn't on the field, So we
we have no idea if it's a one hit wonder
because remember Gino was solid, right, he was twenty one
and fifteen last year, even with all those weapons, even
with those two guys in the backfield, and he was
twenty one and fifteen now, had some big games, no
question about it. Also made some killer mistakes along the way.

(28:18):
So how much are you upgrading in that regard as well?
If you do put it in Sam's hands.

Speaker 1 (28:24):
Exit out about a Fresco exit swalling down the Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 3 (28:29):
Uh so there you go. They're just kind of men
listening man on Sam.

Speaker 4 (28:34):
Let's see, I have win totals. They're a little old
at this point, but they were let's see, Seahawks were at.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
Nine for so they're still there.

Speaker 4 (28:48):
Was just kind of sitting there. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:49):
Yeah, I mean again, just like the Jets, we're just
we're just moving stuff around.

Speaker 3 (28:53):
Hey that looks good, eh, deck chairs. The Jets stayed
the same too, I would assume.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
Yeah, no, no, no, Jets moved out. Jets are now
even money for the Super Bowl. That's not true now
even you completely even money.

Speaker 4 (29:03):
Hey, we don't know which earth he's operating from. Justin
he's in that Marvel cinematic universe.

Speaker 3 (29:10):
Let's find out what's trending in the wide world of sports.

Speaker 1 (29:13):
But guy who's been called the Sam Darnold to Fox
Sports Radio a few years ago, everybody loved him. He
had a couple of stops along the way. Last year,
everybody loves him again, and now he's someplace new. It's
Steve the Seger with what's trending?

Speaker 7 (29:27):
Oh, I thought it was because some people have been
let go and I'm seeing ghosts.

Speaker 3 (29:31):
Oh sad good. I should have said that.

Speaker 7 (29:34):
By the way, we've just started the fourth quarter of
that Knix at Sacramento game.

Speaker 3 (29:38):
Here we are, We've just started the third quarter. Wait,
what did you say?

Speaker 7 (29:41):
Just started the fourth at twelve thirty five Eastern time.
By the way, O Giananobi is on the court. All
five starters has scored in double figures and the Knicks
are leading the late game at Sacramento one oh three
seventy nine early fourth quarter, Golden State got a triple
double from Jimmy Butler. They won five in a row.
Warriors eat Portland, won thirty to one twenty. Dallas ended

(30:03):
a five game losing streak with a win at San
Antonio won thirty three one twenty nine. MAVs on free
throws twenty seven of thirty in a close win. Meanwhile,
ten free throw misses for the Spurs they were fourteen
of twenty four. Dallas had just lost at home yesterday
to the Suns. Phoenix lost a close one at Memphis,
won twenty to one eighteen. Kevin Durant did have thirty

(30:24):
five points from three point range. He had been seven
of eight and then he missed the last shot of
the night. John Morant in the victory twenty nine points
and twelve assists. Chicago beat Indiana won twenty one to
one oh three twenty nine points each for Kobe White
and Josh Giddy the Pacers. Tyrese Haliburton was out again
with a hip injury. Houston ninety seven eighty four over Orlando.

(30:45):
Steven Adams of the Rocket seventeen rebounds off the bench.
Denver shot sixty one percent from the floor and won
at Oklahoma City won forty to one twenty seven. That
ends the seven game winning streak of OKC. Nikola Jokic
was questionable with elbow and ankle injuries.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
He played.

Speaker 7 (31:01):
He had thirty five points eighteen rebounds. Jamal Murray thirty
four points. These two teams just played on Sunday, with
OKC beat him and SGA as he's known Shay Gilgess.
Alexander had forty points in yesterday's game Atlanta and Charlotte.
With victories Toronto and Boston as well, Celtics have won
five straight. Brooklyn had lost seven in a row, but

(31:24):
upset the Lakers one eleven to one oh eight. Lukadansich
had been questionable with the sore back he played. He
had a triple double, but was eight of twenty six
shooting from the floor. In college basketball, the Sun Belt
Conference final went to Troy, the Southern Conference final to Wafford.
Those two schools headed to the NCAAs In the West
Coast Conference semifinals tonight in Vegas. Nineteenth ranks Saint Mary's

(31:46):
eliminated Pepperdine Right now at halftime, San Francisco leads Gonzaga
thirty seven to thirty five. Women soups Number three Yukon
takes the Big East Tournament final seventy to fifty over
number twenty two rank Creighton NHL. Colorado won its six
to three games three nothing over Chicago, Ottawa and Buffalo.
With wins, Yankees pitcher Garrett Cole will have Tommy John

(32:07):
surgery tomorrow. The Seahawks are signing quarterback Sam Darnold. The
Jets gave quarterback Justin Fields a two year contract. New
Orleans resigned defensive end Chase Young tonight. The forty nine
Ers reportedly will cut full back Kyle Yustchek, and the
Chargers are expected to sign running back Najie Harris. They
are resigning linebacker Khalil Mack as well to a one

(32:28):
year deal. They're resigning center Bradley Boseman and punter JK Scott.
Running back Edwards cut. Former Charger wide receiver Josh Palmer
goes to Buffalo.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
Back to you, thank you, STEVEO.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
You know, listen really quick that move Buffalo with Josh Palmer.
I feel like now with the big contract for Josh Allen,
Buffalo is now in the running in place kind of
aspect where Okay, we're paying them all this money now
for the next few years. And yes, you know, yeah,

(33:00):
part of it is, hey, we're freeing up some cash.
But when you're ever you're paying a quarterback like that,
there's only so much cash you can free up. And
I feel like Buffalo's at that spot where they got
us start to start taking chances with their skill position
players and hoping to get it right right, like when
they were Stefan Diggs centric and and and hey we
got our big weapon and was going to make it work.

(33:21):
That was one way, But now they've kind of reinvented
themselves where hey, the wide receivers we kind of have
to take a chance on, and like getting Khalil Shakir
and him being okay, well we should hold on to him.
It's it's weird with with Buffalo, even though no one
deserves the money more than Josh Allen and hopefully they
have a little bit of money out there. Like I
think the days of them being loaded up anywhere but

(33:42):
quarterback on offense, I think that's kind of over.

Speaker 3 (33:44):
And I love James Cook.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
I love James Cook, but I feel like that those
those days of trying to make that happen, like that's
that's hell and gone now because you have this money
that that's going to be taken up by Allen every
single year.

Speaker 4 (33:54):
Well, should they have spent more money elsewhere instead of
bringing Shakir back? How about that in terms of game changers? Yeah,
because they paid him a bunch of money. I mean
I like him obviously. The operational efficiency well chronicled and
the connection between those two and you're you're hoping for
more for Kincaid or as that ship sailed to where
you have to start looking somewhere else, Right, can he

(34:16):
stay on the field? Can he be the impact player
they needed? Huge questions.

Speaker 1 (34:21):
It's tough, man, Like, as much as you want to
believe the Bills are gonna break through, they're gonna do set. Yeah,
they're kind of just okay, you're hoping at some point
that one year it all clicks, because really the over
under for Josh Allen for Super Bowls, like I would
put it at a half, right, Like, maybe he gets
to one. Maybe it all clicks for the Bills and
he gets to one, but it's gonna be the right

(34:42):
type of lower level free agents that come in that
you take a chance on it for one year it
works out, And that's not the way the Bills team
was built up until not but that's the way they
are going forward. Exit out about a Fresco exit swalling Dome.
Jason Smith Mike Carman live from the tirec dot Com studios.
So we've talked about some teams jump up and becoming
Super Bowl contenders after what they've done the last couple

(35:03):
of days. But straight ahead, how about a team after
what they've done the last couple of days, both in
free agency and over the weekend, has given you a
quarterback breakout candidate for this year? Who is it that's next?
Jason and Mike Fox.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 3 (35:49):
And TJ.

Speaker 1 (35:50):
Clearly a lot of NFL teams hoping to not get
locked out of free agency in day two TJUH Jason Smith, Mike.

Speaker 3 (35:59):
Harmon from the tire rack dot Com Studios. I'm gonna
tell you something again.

Speaker 1 (36:04):
After Day one of NFL free agency, we have two
of the big moves we're gonna get to coming up
in a bit. But I'm gonna tell you this, and
I'm gonna double down on this. What I've told you
a couple of weeks. So congratulations to everybody else who
wants to jump on top of this take as well. Uh, okay,
you're welcome for it. I told you the Caleb Williams
breakout is coming this year. Okay, they get Drew Dolman

(36:28):
from the Falcons today they have now brought in a
center and two guards. Joe Toney is a is an
All Pro? Still you though he's a little bit older,
is an All Pro. Jonah Jackson's a Pro bowler. Right,
he got right is gonna be your right tackle and
Jones will be your left tackle the offensive line. You've
solved that in theory. Now in theory, I say you
have solved that problem because watching Caleb Williams play last year,

(36:51):
he looked like he was on a very normal trajectory
of he gets the job right away, flashes a little bit,
but the NFL has their way with him for the
most part, and then midway part of the season he
starts to get it. And then the guy with that
kind of pedigree, number one overall pick in the draft
is going to start exerting his will on the games.

(37:11):
And that sort of happened, and it sort of happened
just that way. And I remember we talked about it
a lot last season. I said, you just got to wait,
give him a little bit of time. He's not quite
the jade and Daniels jumping in and doing it right away.
For whatever reason, quarterbacks mature and they get they they
improve it at different rates.

Speaker 3 (37:26):
It's okay.

Speaker 1 (37:28):
And then when you got to the two thirds three
quarters way part to the end of the season, suddenly
they couldn't keep him up right, and he is under
siege before even there were guys in the backfield before
he even got the ball from center.

Speaker 3 (37:39):
I don't even have it yet.

Speaker 4 (37:40):
Playoff.

Speaker 1 (37:41):
Oh he sacked again, but they never snapped the ball.
Like this is what it was like watching Caleb Williams play,
And in so many games last year like that game
against the Lions, are going, oh my god, he can't
even take two steps. You need to make sure that
your quarterback is in the position to succeed, and he
needs a little bit of I need to slow down
and see the field. The game's got to slow down

(38:01):
for me a little bit, and then I can really
start putting my own skills out there, which is getting
outside the pocket, keeping plays alive, throwing on the run,
all things he did great in college. But when all
of a sudden, you feel like you have it going
and then you're underseed, you have no chance on Your
decision making is bad. You're rushed all the time, You're
not making great calls. And that's what happened to Kayleb Williams.

(38:22):
Now in theory, that should be solved now because you
have a pretty good offensive line, and as long as
this offensive line is as as it's supposed to be,
he is going to have an absolute breakout second year
in the NFL, and it's gonna be incredible and it's
gonna be Boy, who would you rather have long term?
Jayden Daniels are Caleb Williams. The guy is that good.
You just have to give him a little bit, a

(38:42):
little bit of protection so he can get his his
feet comfortable and then watch the takeoff. I'm a big
believer he has that breakout year this year.

Speaker 4 (38:49):
Yeah. I think the biggest thing is learning to play
on time, something he didn't have to do much at USC.
Right you could scramble and reverse course and wait for
your guys to get open and make big plays downfield
because you had separation, whereas this past year you had
you got to decide how much were his sacks versus
how much you want to blame the offensive plot because

(39:10):
the line graded out really well in some of those services,
and I want to watch games with them to understand
what the hell they think they're seeing, because they were
not good. But it also doesn't help when you have
DeAndre Swift who wants to dance in the backfield, so
you never got a semblance of a consistent running game
to go along and to compliment what you're trying to do.

(39:31):
With Kayleb Williams, he also was of the school like
you were talking about with Zach Wilson, of hey, we're
not going to turn the ball over. Look at his
shot chart. It's pathetic the number of attempts that were
at or near the line of scrimmage pushing the ball downfield.
Even with DJ Moore and Roma Dunza and having Comet

(39:52):
and Keenan Allen like, there was no pushing the ball
down the field. It was basically a line of scrimmage,
behind the line of scrimmage and with within five yards,
So that all needs to change. In the philosophy of
Ben Johnson, which you would think it would if you
have a competent front five to protect him, and maybe
he can play and learn to play on timing and

(40:13):
rhythm like you need to, and like Ben Johnson's gonna expect,
if this offense is really gonna take out Yeah, I'm hopeful,
But just like last year, when the boat starts getting overweighted,
I get getting kind of nervous about it, and the
first time he calls a pass for any of those
wide receivers or offensive linemen, I'm gonna be pissed, just

(40:34):
like I was watching him with the Lions this last year.
It's like, your offense is really efficient. Keep playing.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
I know, I know it's the I know you think
disasters around the corner. Why because it's the Bear. I
feel the same way with the Jets, disasters around the corner. Well,
I'm telling the as long as the offensive, as long
as it's as advertised and and they're getting what they expect,
things are going to be remarkably different.

Speaker 3 (40:58):
Right.

Speaker 1 (40:58):
You still have so many weapons in Chicago, and you're
gonna add this offseason.

Speaker 4 (41:03):
Well, but Sam's not in Minnesota anymore.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
No Sam, No, And then maybe Jordan Love isn't as
great as he thought.

Speaker 3 (41:09):
Maybe the Lions have peaked.

Speaker 1 (41:11):
Yeh know, all these things, I got no, but this
is a team that is always they played below expectations
last year. You had a lot of crazy stuff happened.
I still don't know that they ever really recovered from
the Hail Mary play like that was. If you talk
about one play where maybe you saw things really go wrong,
where it never got right, that was the play because
that would have wound up being a pretty big win,
and hey, we're gaining confidence and our quarterback is really good.

(41:33):
But I don't know they recovered from that. Now, in theory,
you have better leadership, you have a better plan in place,
and you have a quarterback, friendly head coach. I mean it,
I'm not gonna say nothing can go wrong. So I
don't want to jink you and put that out there.
But really this this is gonna be a great year.
I mean, I don't be afraid of it. Jump jump
into it. Embraced that Caleb Williams is gonna be that

(41:53):
guy this year. What he needed was an offensive line
that's gonna keep him upright, watch what happens.

Speaker 4 (41:58):
Well, I'm already looking for it too, any shy, So
if you can, that'd be great.

Speaker 3 (42:03):
You mean a Bears one or or or a Chiefs
one on your.

Speaker 4 (42:06):
Your you're funny. We'll get We'll get the Bears one.
Come on, let's build that on line, let's build that interior.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
Coming up next, what's the best move of the last
few days in the NFL. We'll tell you Jason and
