Fox Sports Radio. Hello, Welcome in side final hour tonight
Jason Smith Show with my bas friend Mike Harmon. Cors
up live from the Tirack dot Com studios tirec dot com.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
I hope you get there.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
An unmatched election, fast free shipping, free road hazard protection
and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirac dot com is
the way tire buying should be. Well, hope you have
more info on Juju Watkins. Sometime later on this hour,
still nothing from USC. After her injury earlier tonight, looking
knee injury. She was taken to the hospital for an MRI.

(01:04):
She's in the care of Kech Medicine. It looked really
bad when it happened, and really everybody's fingers are crossed
because this is the best player in college basketball and
the end suddenly the NCAA Tournament is in flux, and
and the w NBA season is in flux because you
know they start thirty six hours after the national championship game.
Watkins probably the number one overall. Pia her and Page

(01:27):
well sure, oh yeah, that's true. But you know, her
and Page Beckers have been carrying college basketball all the
way through. It has been a it has been some
kind of year, capitalizing on the success of the year
of the year before with the college basketball tournament. But
now you wonder, okay, hopefully Juju Watkins is okay. And
I know that there's there's a there's a little bit

(01:49):
of chippiness during the game. We talked about, you know,
it was the play dirty, and it's hard for me
to see it and see the play is dirty. It's
it's one of those it's one of those things where
you kind of know that a play is dirty when
you see it.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I get it.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
But she's got two defenders who are trying to stop
her on a breakaway, and one kind of steps a
little bit in her way, but not one hundred percent
in her way. She gets a little bit off balance,
but all she does is come down on her on
her right leg and her knee completely bends to the side. Again,

(02:24):
it was a lot of pain. She was howling in
pain when she was on the ground, and she was
picked up and carried off the court right away and
taken on the hospital. Again, is it hard for me
to say that that's it's It's really like you gotta
keep going, Oh, here was the intention here, and here
was a and and just by also knowing that if
it really was a dirty play, you would have seen

(02:45):
so much more blow up on social media about it,
about it being a dirty play, right, because what are
people talking a lot about right now? The Demanta Sabonis
play on Jason Tatum earlier tonight, right the the Celtics
and the Kings. Tatum goes up for a three and
he comes down on Sabonus's foot.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
And he rolls his ankle.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Tatum was in a lot of pain as well, and
he was helped off the floor. He came back out,
shot his free throws, then left the game looked a
little bit better for him. Stayed in shooting free throws
and was helped off the court, but he still walked
off a lot of it under his own power. So
you know, definitely things seem to be a little bit
better friend than Juju Watkins. But what's the all thing? Hey,
Sabona sabonas Sabonis, and he actually put out a statement saying,

(03:28):
I feel awful. I didn't mean for an injury to happen.
You know, stuff like this has happened to me this year.
I didn't want it to happen. I'm so sorry. And
there's a level of dirtiness when when you want to
talk about players who do things like that, there's a
Bruce Bowen level where I'm just gonna stick my foot
where you're where where you're you're coming down, and you're

(03:49):
gonna land on and roll your ankle. Right. There's that,
and then there's what we saw tonight, the difference between
these two plays, Like here's Juju Watkins where they're trying
to stop the play, right, two defenders are trying to
stop the play. It's happening really fast again, Everybody is
running down the floor at break neck speed and they're
getting to the point where they have to stop because

(04:10):
the play is they're they're they're in the lane and
there's got to be a play now. Towards the basket.
So whether it was we were going too fast, a
little bit out of control, everybody's out of control going
too fast? Yeah, did did Did the defender try to
get a little bit?

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Well?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, but you're trying to make the play the Sabona's play.
It's not quite that, but it's the it's the it's
the aspect of a player. I just want to make.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
You a little uncomfortable when you're landing.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
I'm not gonna stick my foot in there, but I
want you when you jump up and go up for
a shot, I'm gonna say you gotta come down. It's
gonna be a little weird. And I want to affect
your follow through. I want to I don't want you
to have that true shot that you normally get. I
want you to think about that the next time down
the floor, so that when I see Sabonis, that's that,
that's the kind of thing that I'm thinking. I want

(04:57):
to give you a little bit of a bump, and
I want you to be a little bit uncomfortable when
you come down.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
I didn't, and it would happen too fast for Sabonis too,
because he kind of jumps in the air and he
lands and takes that step into Tatum, which you see
defenders do all the time. Now, clearly it was a
foul and Tatum just happened to come down on his foot.
I don't think Sabonis was there to injure him, but
was he did he want to give him a little
bit of a message. It maybe got a little bit
out of control. Yeah, they did call a flagrant. I'm

(05:24):
sure it's gonna be looked at again and hopefully Jason
Tatum is okay again. It looked like he was a
little bit better off than than Juju Watkins was obviously
being able to go a lot under his own power.
But there's different levels of dirtiness, and that the first play,
I'm like, wow, you really got to search for it.
The play with Tatum is I could see it. It's
not out and out over the top, but still I

(05:44):
could see it. And I can see why everybody is
up in arms over Sabona.

Speaker 5 (05:47):
I mean, you put up the rule for right the
landing space has to be clear. We often see it
on sideline corner shots, but in this case, you know,
for Jason Tatum, there's precedent, there's you know, the video
of an incident with Yannis from earlier in the year,
where he spoke out very candidly. Afterwards did Tatum saying, look,

(06:08):
if I land just a fraction here there, I'm out
six weeks, so you don't know in this case from
Adam Himmel's bach, I want to make sure we get
the surname correct. Writer for the Boston Globe saying, well,
he was not made available for postgame interviews, has sneakers
on both feet and is sitting at his locker eating

(06:28):
and should sit him for the rest of the year
though Mike.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Well, I definitely should send him tomorrow through the playoffs. Yeah,
I'm with you on that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, one last year.
They don't need it tomorrow. Look how excitable you are? Right,
who do they play tomorrow? I forget who do the
Celtics play tomorrow? But they should definitely sit him. They
played who do the Celtics play?

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Well, the St.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
John's is out, so your your other team, you.

Speaker 6 (06:50):
Know, Anthony Davis plays them next tomorrow he's out.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Oh we'll get a a d out too. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (06:55):
He was the first thing he said, I'm not playing.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
All of that to say, like we we've done the
frame by Fred. Oh, that's right. Nicks have the Mavericks tomorrow.
That's right, that's right there, the Mavericks tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Okay, they could win that game where they have to
sell play the Celtics.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
They're not gonna win that game. The Celtics, in your head,
they live, They live by the Saturday game.

Speaker 6 (07:13):
They they lived.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
But yeah, so that but what the Watkins play, Just
to rewind it, there is you see some contact, right arm,
little push back and forth, a little bit of wrestling there,
enough to take her off her gate.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
But they're coming breakneck speed towards the end line.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Right.

Speaker 5 (07:33):
It's that last second where you've got to decide are
you're passing or you shooting? Are you pulling up? And
unfortunately the leg gives out. So we'll see coach Gottlie
met with the media. Uh, we'll see if we get
anything more from her or from the medical staff treating
Juju Watkins. But certainly a big blow for the tournaments.
Uh and really just uncanny how quickly after the Watkins injury,

(07:57):
the Tatum incident did happen.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Yeah, I was, come on, we gotta start this. This
is like an epidemic.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Just stop, just stop, no more superstars on him on day.

Speaker 6 (08:05):
Really should sit him down for the for the year.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
Yeah, I would, Oh, yeah, Tatum, Anthony Davis, everybody, just
sit him all down and sit them all.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Come on, Anthony Davis.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
The fact that he played means the NBA really means business. Now, well,
I think you can't do your tanking anymore, Aid Bricks.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
Yeah no, but I get But A D has always
said he wants to he wants to come back and
try to get them into the playoffs.

Speaker 6 (08:30):
And look, the Mavericks were fine, Jason post game.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
I'm not playing them all yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no,
but he did say he wanted to come back, and
I dig that.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
I dig that.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
You know, he said he wanted to come now clearly,
look you have all kinds of look what's going to
happen to you? But uh no, I'm glad he came
back and he's not playing tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
Okay, how about you think the FIGHTE was gonna be
for every game he he didn't play, especially once he
was on.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
The golf court balls the other day. You even tell
with A D he's hurt all the time, didn't even tell.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Is that's the genius. Hey if I if I'm a
player that gets hurt all the time, They're never gonna
question me. Is right now?

Speaker 5 (09:09):
They are percentage points behind the Phoenix Suns tiebreaker Phoenix Son.

Speaker 6 (09:15):
When you say ad, you're talking about that guy that
used to play for the Lakers.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah, yeah, the guy that won you the title in
twenty twenty with the Big the Big Three over your kids.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Now, evidence that JJ Reddick's gonna hate me even more
than he already does. Right, we know JJ Reddick's me
listens to the show. Obviously, he gave you a fake
Twitter name. Jason Smith won two seven eight four six.
So what did I tell you? What I told you
tonight in the show. The Lakers had a huge loss tonight.
They get blown out by the Magic, their second embarrassing
loss in a row, and on a night where Bronnie

(09:45):
James goes for thirty nine in the gliaue. Yay, he
did Lebron after the nineteen. By the way, Lebron after
the game, we gotta start my son. No, he didn't
speak after the game. Lebron didn't, But thirty nine for
Bronington that's kind of cowardly.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Maybe, well, I think.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
Lebron actually went back in time. He traveled so fas
to go back in time to watch Julie. Okay, so
what did I tell you? I'm not worried about the
Lakers because they just look a little bored. Right. You
see the lack of a close out defensively, a little
bit lazy defensively. Overall teams are able to make that
final pass that that results in an easy basket, the
offense kind of gets bogged down. It was just like, Okay,

(10:21):
Lebron shot last time, so now Luca, you shoot this time.
Lebron will shooting next time, Luca. So it's just their bored, right.
They had a great run getting Luca. They know they're ready.
They were ready for the playoffs after that first month, right,
All the chemistry is there, everything they need. They have
to worry about anything else. There's no more adjusting. They're
just a little bored.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Right. Oh wait a minute, Jen w what do you
tell me this? JJ Redick?

Speaker 1 (10:41):
I'm sure once yell at the team and all they
where all that blah blah. Here's Luka Doncic following the
game tonight, and this is how I know that I
could really be the head coach of the Lakers, because
I told you exactly what Luca's going to tell you.

Speaker 6 (10:56):
I can't play it if you're going to be the
head coach of the Lakers.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
All right, It was all funny games till that last sentence.
I could be the GM of the Lakers.

Speaker 6 (11:07):
Oh that's easy. You just pick up the phone and say, yes, Nico.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Greatest facts it over here, greatest GM. And I ever
did was answer that phone right there. Hey, someone called
j Moore, tell him I made a trade. Okay, So
here is Luka Dagsic agreeing with me in my estimation
the Lakers telling you that I could be running the Lakers.
What do you feel like the difference kind of between
that rhythm you guys had been in and the defense

(11:32):
are from these last two games?

Speaker 6 (11:33):
And where do you feel like you have to as
a team, What do you have to get to to
get back to it.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
I think we just got a little bag that we
play on that eighth game winning shit. You know, we're physical,
we play hell the hell of the defense. I think
we just got a little bit satisfied so we can
we can't afford.

Speaker 6 (11:51):
That right now. Did you feel like.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
Jason Smith Lakers head coach. Jason Smith, Lakers de facto
had coach had this to say about the Lakers game tonight.
I told you, man, look at that.

Speaker 5 (12:04):
I think Danny Hurley regrets not taking the Lakers job
eight seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
I hope they don't blank you Orlando like they blanked
us in that game.

Speaker 6 (12:13):
All right, I'm gonna get much better for you than this.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
It's not i'm telling you, dude, I'm telling my fingers
on the pull. I'm like a Lakers insider, like it's
like the first time. Yeah, they're plane lands landing right
now and they're turning on the radio. God great, Jay
and JJ Redy's going. Jason was right, Come on, man,
how is he right? How is he right? I'm right,
and it hurts me that it had to be Luca
to say it. Yeah, I can't argue with him.

Speaker 6 (12:33):
Luca quote.

Speaker 5 (12:34):
I think me and Braun I think we should be
the guys to do that. I mean, that's on me, obviously.
I gotta do better. I've got to talk more. I
talked in the first half than we just kind of
let my voice down, and I shouldn't do that.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
It's what he held you, man. Nothing nothing is right
the Lakers just look bored. They're ready for them, And
I get you. And the thing is is that I
get it because nothing, nothing happens from Game fifty five
to Game eighty two. You get a little bit of
a differentiation in the standings, but not nearly enough where hey,
a team comes completely out of nowhere, wins twenty out

(13:08):
of twenty five, and suddenly they're the second seed in
the playoffs. It doesn't happen that way in the NBA.
Happens like that in Major League Baseball. Happens like that
in the NFL. Teams get hot, win five ro does
not happen in the NBA. Right, So, yeah, I get
when teams are bored. I'm sure the Celtics are board.
I'm sure the Knicks are bored. I'm sure lots of
teams are bored. Right now, Okay, we've had enough, we're
ready for the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Well, the Knicks aren't board, they're just learning to well
play with you.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
We need we need more games because we need runs
in to get healthy, well nose guys to actually figure
out how to play together. You know, when Brunson is
not on the court, well, I bro wants the ball
is the most embarrassing minute of basketball I think I've
seen in recent memory.

Speaker 6 (13:46):
Dude, Gus hurt. What do we do now? Hey?

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Who dribbles? Listen?

Speaker 1 (13:51):
I get what you're saying, but it doesn't If Brunsen's out,
it doesn't matter. All right, here we got Dorian Finney Smith.
Here's your voice of reason.

Speaker 6 (13:57):
Ready.

Speaker 5 (13:58):
We need the adversity, especially being a new team. We
need to learn a lot about each other during tough times.
You almost wanted to go all full dust. You a
hard times. Usually don't see things when you're winning. So
we've got the chance to grow. We're gonna use this
opportunity to grow. I say, it's all in flames around

(14:19):
you and you're finally coming back.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
To earth against a couple of teams that can run you.

Speaker 5 (14:23):
That said, you won't have to run to this breakneck
pace that Orlando and Chicago did when you get to
a seven game series.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
I'm telling you, man, I could be the head coach. Hey, guys,
let's board them a little more play All right, great,
let you go with the head coach. I gotta I
got a show to do tonight. I'll see head coach.

Speaker 5 (14:38):
Would you wear a suit or would it be that
that nifty Travis Matthew.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
Oh, I'm not gonna work.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
I'm not gonna work with the head coaching. Why because
I could do it? You're upset that I could do it?
Pick any other damn team? Why the Lakers are.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Fun to coach? How want you go with gold with
gold accents or.

Speaker 7 (15:00):
No? No?

Speaker 1 (15:00):
No, I would wear gold because I'd wear like I
because I have Michigan gear, so I'd wear like Michigan
gear instead of Laker gear.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
So I'd go with that gold.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Okay, you know, yeah, the Maze, sorry, Maze, I would
go with that a blue cheese sure, exit out by
the Fresco exit swollen dome, Luga Doncic clearly understanding my
breakdown of the.

Speaker 6 (15:20):
NBA Coming up next?

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Have we been talking about the wrong guy as the
best coach in college basketball? It's next right here, Jason
and Mike Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (15:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
He ha.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
Live from the tire Rack dot Com studios. So I
want to say this, Yeah, do you think Tiger Woods
is trying to be like director of fitness like you know,
now he's dating Vanessa Trump and they went Facebook official
or social media fish like you think you start, Hey,
I can get in and I can be like director
of fitness or something.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
That's the ex wife of one of the kids. And yeah,
but it doesn't matter.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
He's still in the you know, he's still in the
you know, he's still in the Trump circles.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Is Don Junior's wife ex wife?

Speaker 6 (16:17):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (16:18):
That get you in?

Speaker 1 (16:19):
Well, you still like you share the kids, right, still
the kids and your kids around their kids and they got.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
And didn't Tiger Woods go golfing with Trump a couple
of times? Well? Sure, why were I not? So I
think it's okay. I think he's still in.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
I mean it's weird because in a regular in a
regular relationship, a person golfing with someone's dad whose son
is no longer.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Married to another woman is a little weird. Well but
it's a little weird. It's a new day and age.
It is right, and it's all about.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
You know, can you get along in the post breakup?

Speaker 2 (16:52):
But if I if I'm Don Junior. I'm going Dad,
You're going golfing with my ex wife's new boyfriend. Well,
here's the question. There's Don Junior golf.

Speaker 6 (17:00):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
I don't think, but it certainly does because I don't
be the same thing as they went bowling, toga no, no.
But whatever the activity is, if Don Junior doesn't participate,
then he's out of the mix and you need someone
else to figure out the foresom okay. So if that's
Tiger Woods, everybody wins.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Okay. Even if he is, you know, you know.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
It's still it's still someone's dead. Being close with the
person who is now his ex's boyfriend, that's nuts.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
That's weird. I mean, obviously, it's it's kind of different.

Speaker 1 (17:37):
When we talked about it, love doctor, you would be
upset about You would be upset about that.

Speaker 6 (17:41):
I don't care.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Sure you would, of course you would care about a
lot of Yes, you would. Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Let's say if he used the Bob Dylan line. I
used to care, But things have changed.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
Great movie Wonder Boys, if you haven't seen it, Michael
Michael Douglas and Peter.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Parker, you were dating.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
So let's say you were dating somebody for a long time,
you were married to them, you got kids with them,
and everything else.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
You brok that's great. And then.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
She started dating me, and I was like, okay, weird, right?
And then I go and play golf with your dad.
How do you feel about that? I mean, I know
your dad golf? What does he do to bet horses? Okay,
I go bet horses with your dad.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
That's a violation of all trusts. Okay, exactly, That's exactly
what's going on. That's something we used to do. Okay.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
In this case, if Don Junior isn't a golfer, it
doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
What if we went to the movies together?

Speaker 1 (18:32):
What if we went What if I was spending time
with your dad, Your dad and I are hanging out
having drinks.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
Ever, you'd be a little upset. This is probably gonna
get me in trouble. This is I'm gonna go.

Speaker 5 (18:43):
J is absorbed in other capacities to where he doesn't care.

Speaker 1 (18:49):
I okay, but it's it said it may optically.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Yeah, Hey, look weird.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
We do.

Speaker 7 (18:55):
We do.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
We see a lot of stuff.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
It's like, that's interesting because I was it was the
only I thought when I saw the the first initial
rumblings before the what was it hard drop hard?

Speaker 2 (19:09):
What the hard announcement?

Speaker 5 (19:10):
Large hard launch, hard launch in this relationship when I
saw the rumors early and I just went, huh hard lunch.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
And then I moved on to something else for my day.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
But I'm saying, I'm not Don Junior, but a little
weird just to me and your dad hanging out having fun. Yeah,
we're just joking, and just think of us, you know,
toasting beers together and stuff, going to the big Chicago
bar in Saint Patrick's Day and me pretending to be.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
Way more irish than I am, and you're not.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
Your dad wearing a tam and he's talking to me
about the Bears and saying, you know, in nineteen eighty
four when we beat the Washington Redskins, and I thought
I knew that was when things are gonna start. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Hey,
you know your your your son Mike is one of
my friends.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
I don't want to talk about him.

Speaker 6 (19:51):
You're here with me.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
It would be a little weird.

Speaker 5 (19:53):
It would be great about that Too's my dad had
a tricky out of me like twenty five years ago,
so you'd have the full bought buzzer voice.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Oh, I would I would get that.

Speaker 5 (20:02):
Okay, He's called himself lovingly buzzer man for many years.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
That's my guy.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
I just think of that Dennis Leary routine when he says,
I want to I want to go to Burger King
and I want to have I want to have that. Yeah,
I'm going to get the manager going get them. Are
you making fun of me? I'm not making funny. Uh
So we may have been talking about the wrong guy
as coach of the Year in college basketball, right, because
clearly it's not Rick Petina, it's Bickerston. I say this

(20:31):
because Patino let me down and Saint John's is on
my never again list.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
I'm never picking St. John. No, no, no.

Speaker 6 (20:38):
They let me know.

Speaker 1 (20:40):
Three months I had them in the fast link, and
this is how they pay me back by losing to Arkansas,
to New York City all terrible.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
What he was trying to do though, justin bit by bit,
he's trying to get himself to where he can leave
California and maybe if he gets in good with the
Detroit people, they will them back.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
But that, but that, But the.

Speaker 1 (21:03):
Attempt was to become that guy because if they won,
it's like, look, what look what I brought you. Look
same thing with New York. Look look I brought you
Saint John's and then they lost. Clearly, my influence gets
teams to a certain point. But you know what, everybody's
got to bring something else to the party the second round.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
I got the Lions.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
To the NFC Championship game and they threw up on themselves.
Jared did that not my fault. I got the Lakers
to a point where, look, they got Luka Doncic, and
now that they're smith they could be winning. They could
be winning a title. Now look now they're not.

Speaker 6 (21:36):
Now they're not the coach trying, but they're Smith proof.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
I got Saint John's all the way to a two
seed in the nca Tournament. This is how they pay
me back.

Speaker 6 (21:44):
That insurance a long time ago.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
Never again, I'm never picking Saint john because once you
go on my never again, lest you don't come off it.
Because no, no, there that's that. It wouldn't be never
again with again never, it's never, it's never again. But
I mean, how deep in is this list?

Speaker 5 (22:01):
Because I mean, we'll think about all those guys that
became the fantasy never again guy. Any running backs that
failed you second wide receivers.

Speaker 1 (22:11):
Oh yeah, you know any team that has really failed
me for something like.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
That states Men's Nation. This is not just.

Speaker 1 (22:20):
This is what a bad weekend that was showed up
for the This is this is not like all the
you know the Jets lose every year. No, no, it's
like when you do something to me when I you know,
when I go out there, I meet you halfway. That's
better than no way. I'll meet you across the stars.
Kenny Loggins meet me halfway? Uh over the top story?

Speaker 2 (22:40):
Is that from one of the songs still no, no, no, no, no.
That was when he was the.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Backwards Yeah, yeah, I turn into a different person when
he's lifting the weights in the truck and meet me halfway?

Speaker 3 (22:52):
Was this?

Speaker 2 (22:52):
I think it's Kenny Loggins meet.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
Me halfway across the sky. So when I meet you there,
you got to come through for me. I'm putting you
on my never again list. Here on my never again list,
Saint John's never Again. All the blood, sweat and tears
I put in them in the last three months, forget
it now you're done. I'm i never again list. But
that being said, thanks, Rick Patino didn't even get to
see where the white suit wants.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
Thanks. Uh, well that's where he also did not meet
you halfway.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
Maybe maybe John Calipari is back, right, we're winding everybody. Hey,
I know we all thought I forgot how to coach
because I didn't have Kentucky really deep in the tournament
in a few years, and I left in a huff
a year ago to go to Arkansas.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
But hey, everybody, I'm back.

Speaker 1 (23:32):
I don't know that that Calipari is the coach of
the year as much as he's the coach of the
decade so far, because this is a guy who a
year ago, this is just a year ago, left very abruptly.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
To go to Arkansas. Right, was a shocking set. Nobody
saw this coming.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
All of a sudden, we get sources Calipari working on
buyout or working on agreement to leave for Arkansas.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Wait, what do you go in Arkansas? What?

Speaker 6 (23:58):
What?

Speaker 2 (23:59):
What team? Coming off of one a sixteen and seventeen
year and.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
He goes to Arkansas. When he got to Arkansas, he
had no players. And I don't mean like he had
no talent, He had zero players. He had no scholarship
players on his roster. When he went he even said,
remember the interview when he said, I just had a
meeting with the team. It was fast because there is
no team. There's no team. He had no players a

(24:22):
year ago, which makes me wonder what teams like Syracuse
do when they go, hey, we're trying to rebuild for
four years. You've had guys and four star guys come
in and you can't go more than fourteen and nineteen.
Calipari had zero guys a year ago at this point
last year he had zero play How this worked?

Speaker 2 (24:38):
Zero?

Speaker 5 (24:38):
You've already got an investment emotionally and in this new
nil era, not just the scholarships, but also investors, business people,
alums that have brought to the table, which means you're
building on faulty infrastructure. If that kid is not learning
and growing and becoming the player that you envisioned that
he would be as you brought him out of high school, Thereby,

(25:01):
as you add other players to it, you've already built
it on a faulty premise. You've already got players that
are going to underperform and underachieve. Thereby you're never going
to reach those new heights. So I would argue for
cali Peri, this is the best of all situations, because
what was he always the best at getting the guy
fresh out of high school to be a one and done.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
So this is the same thing again, go build from.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
Nothing, zero players. He had an expansion team. Yeah, but
there's nobody that loved the old coach, the old trainers,
the old team managers, the old way of doing things.
That you have to get that out on the building.
You had to start recruiting at the end of March,
start recruiting.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
Well, no, they didn't play in the tournament, and he
was done early.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
So because of the rules like today March in the
middle of March.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
Yeah, but there's.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
Still sixteen coaches that were at still playing basketball at
this point that he could go go recruiting. They didn't
have time, didn't have a team, didn't have a team,
and they get to the sweet sixteen. Forget about the
starting oh and fighter, and then the sweet sixteen and
they author the biggest upset, the biggest win of the
tournament so far. No players, no player. That should be
something you can't do. You get not when you have

(26:13):
that latest start that's saying, Okay, I'm gonna be in
a big race. It's me and Patino and it's Shier
and it's I Iszo And what I'm gonna do is
this where you're gonna say go, And it's one hundred
yard race and I'm gonna let these guys get about
fifty yards ahead of me before I start running, and
I'm gonna catch them all and we're gonna cross the
finish line together one big moment. Look at us all

(26:34):
holding hands across the finish line, like that's what Calipari
did Tortoise.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
And the Hare a year.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
But he's had twenty five years of this type of building. Hey,
And I'm gonna say he's well practiced. But still you
do you were going to a new school.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
And and you don't have anybody. I mean, just think
about that for a second, and I get that.

Speaker 1 (26:55):
But then you can John Caliperi. Yeah, but there's only
so many guys out there because you're not gonna get
anybody to flip from Duke, right, You're not anybody to
flip from North Carolina. You're gonna get guys to flip
from other schools that aren't these schools. But if you
are at Kentucky and you're into it with a kid, hey,
we're into it with Duke or North Carolina.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
You might be able to get him, But now you're
not gonna get somebody.

Speaker 1 (27:15):
All these big players they're all committed by now, all
the big stars are all committed. By the time you
get to the middle of March. There could there be
some Yeah, okay, ifew hey, the people Calipari was talking
to you were gonna come to Kentucky. Obviously he was
gonna get guys. But to get guys in a year
where the SEC is really good, Uh, to not only
just win, not only make the tournament, but one of

(27:36):
the sixteen teams left.

Speaker 2 (27:38):
Man, I'm like, I go, a jan.

Speaker 6 (27:40):
Autry, what the hell are you doing?

Speaker 2 (27:41):
Like all these other schools, what are you.

Speaker 1 (27:43):
Doing in fire them all and start from scratch. Cali
Perry's been doing this forever. The ncuble A now finally
caught up to him. They finally are in his world,
and he's smiling. He's got the Montgomery Barns excellent exit
up by a Fresco exit swollen Dome. The Jason Smith

Patino right career wise, what is it six or thirteen?
Oh yeah, yeah, and I'll say it for Frostburg since
you beack Saint John's soot.

Speaker 2 (28:34):
That's completely my.

Speaker 5 (28:35):
There was a lot of weight on that given the
breadth and scope of our global enterprise.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Here at Fox Sports Radio with the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
App, time now to find out what's trending in the
wide world of sports from Man has been called the
John Calipari of Fox Sports Radio. During his career, he
does pretty well for a couple of years. Then Lee's
before the place he works for gets in a lot
of trouble.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
It's Steve Disager.

Speaker 6 (28:59):
You didn't even have to finish the sentence. I didn't
like the analogy. I have never been there.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
I know if you ever leave here, we're in trouble,
like the NCAA is coming to town.

Speaker 2 (29:09):
If you leave to say, you know what's happening? Man,
that's right.

Speaker 5 (29:13):
Well, the look on his face was everything though, That's like,
where is this going?

Speaker 1 (29:20):
Every place Steve's worked but for the trail of NCAA
violations behind.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Okay, wait, so before Fox Sports Radio, where did you work?

Speaker 4 (29:27):
Give me some more some places local LA and they
don't exist anymore.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
So okay, all right, there you go here, go there, demoded.
You killed the whole station.

Speaker 6 (29:36):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (29:37):
It's like someone taking the SATs for Derek Rose.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
And before that you worked to Toys r Us right, Okay,
happened to ten Rubio's, fish Taco's, anything that's closing.

Speaker 2 (29:46):
Sure, okay, all right, all of that.

Speaker 6 (29:48):
Ruby, I'm still still mad about that.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
I'm still mad about that.

Speaker 1 (29:53):
I went to Rubios like last year the week after
we had gone Tom Like, I've gotting no shrimp tacos.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
They're so good.

Speaker 6 (30:00):
God, that might be the meanest thing you've ever done.

Speaker 7 (30:02):
Here.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
So proud about that.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Men's supplantation before that run.

Speaker 6 (30:11):
Yeah, hometown buffet, all of that.

Speaker 8 (30:14):
Men's Sweet sixteen starts Thursday night with Alabama BYU Florida
against Maryland. Maryland women won in double overtime in a
comeback against Alabama tonight, second round tournament game one eleven,
one eight, despite forty five points for Alabama. Sarah Ashley Barker,
Maryland was down seventeen late third quarter Maryland against one

(30:34):
seat South Carolina. In the Sweet sixteen, USC advanced with
a home win, an easy one against Mississippi State ninety
six fifty nine, but superstar Juju Watkins was carried off
the court with an apparent right knee entry.

Speaker 4 (30:48):
USC wouldn't even say that that it was a knee
entry as she was taken to the hospital for an MRI.
She had heard her left ankle on Saturday, but did
start tonight. She averages twenty five points per game on
the men's side. By the way, Texas has a new
basketball coach at Sean Miller from Xavier. Iowa hired Drake's
Ben McCollum as head coach. Minnesota's new head coach Nico

(31:09):
Medvid from Colorado State. He's from Minneapolis. Former Sacramento kingsguard
Mike Bibbia is the new head coach at Sacramento State.
The late NBA game went to Phoenix on a game
winning jumper from Devin Booker one oh six over Milwaukee.
Kevin Durant thirty eight points thirty seven for Kobe White
in the Bulls win at Denver one twenty nine, one
to nineteen. Nikola Jokic was out for a fifth straight

(31:30):
game with the bad ankle ankle injury for Jason Tatum
late third Boston did win six straight victories for Boston
won thirteen to ninety five the final at Sacramento. Dallas
got Anthony Davis back, finally returned from six weeks out
with a groin entry at twelve points in a win
at Brooklyn. Victories for Toronto and New Orleans. Indiana won
its fifth straight. Orlando beat the Lakers one eighteen to

(31:52):
one oh six. John Moranda the Grizzlies will miss a
fifth straight game on Tuesday with a sore hamstring. Cleveland's
Donovan Mitchell will be out with a groin injury. Steph Curry,
with his pelvit contusion after a fall recently, is questionable
for Tuesday. It'll be the Warriors. Jimmy Butler back in
Miami tomorrow. Kay Cunningham of the Pistons questionable for Tuesday with.

Speaker 6 (32:12):
A sore calf.

Speaker 4 (32:13):
He did not play on Sunday in the NHL, Dallas
shut out Minnesota three nothing. The Tennessee Titans signed kicker
Joey Sly and the Titans attended the University of Miami's
Pro Day, which feature quarterback cam Ward Ken Wizenhunt, former
NFL coach now with Memphis of the UFL, is stepping
aside for personal reasons. The Spring League starts this Friday
night on Fox TV, and finally to the Baseball News,

(32:35):
Royals first baseman Vinnie Basquentina, who had ninety seven RBIs
last year, says he thinks he can play in the
Thursday opener this week despite a strained hamstring. Ranger shorts
up Corey Seeger was out for Tonight's exhibition with a
sore calf, but Texas defeated Kansas City six to three,
Jock Peterson a three run homer. Dodger first baseman Freddie
Freeman returns Sunday after a rib injury he had. Like

(32:57):
Mookie Betts, missed the eight games in Japan last week.
Freeman played tonight. Betts did not out again due to illness,
but Bets did have a full workout today and was
finally able to keep some solid food down. Three game
exhibition series concludes against the Angels tomorrow. Dodgers loss, giving
up three in the ninths Tonight five four back to you.

Speaker 6 (33:16):
Thank you, Steve O.

right after we get off the air tonight. Now, we
do have breaking news coming into our newsroom as I speak,
so I'm gonna kick it back to Steve de Sager,
who has an update on Juju Watkins.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
The ESPN show.

Speaker 4 (33:55):
I'm serania report that it is an ACL injury for
Juju Watkins. What did we say say earlier in the night,
just a few weeks ago in the NBA, Kyrie Irving
went down and they said he's not returning to tonight's game,
and then the report was sprain kne It turned out
to be torn ACL and he's out for the season.
Now there's this report on Watkins who was hurt tonight,

(34:16):
and it seemed quite obvious at the beginning. It was
a serious right knee injury.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
Mak you Steve, Apparently Shaan's is doing college basketball now,
He's got college basketball breaking news.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
He's got this. He just take it over the world.

Speaker 1 (34:27):
It is just an awful story. Juju Watkins the best
player in college basketball. Again, not surprising because of the
way the injury went down and what we saw. We'll
continue to break down this breaking story again. USC's Juju
Watkins torn ACL in her right knee. She will undergo surgery,
meaning she is out for the remainder of this tournament.

(34:48):
Again reacting to this breaking story. Coming up next, Jason
to Mike.

Speaker 2 (34:51):
Listen.

Speaker 7 (34:51):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon gideat live from the Tirack dot Com studios.
And we just brought you the breaking story about ten
minutes ago. Not surprising, but still very sad and of
course really difficult. Juju Watkins is out for the season.

(35:24):
Torn ACL suffered tonight. Earlier in the game against Mississippi State.
USC women's basketball had a champs Torani I had it
as well. Just an awful blow and awful moment. She's
the best player in the game and USC basketball was
on the rise. Look, this is this is a case
of Caitlin Clark and to an extent, Angel Rees and

(35:45):
some other players passed the torch this year to Juju
Watkins and Paige Becker's and they were making the tournament
their own. Jayden Daniels was at the game again, you
know here, you know, watching and it was it's just
a it's just a really sad moment. And the thing
about the play is that, yes, the game was chippy
after this happened, another couple of injuries, the handshake line

(36:08):
was chippy a little bit. But you know, seeing this
play as often as we have, we talked about this
earlier in the hour, it wasn't really dirty. Chandler Prater
is trying to just make a basketball play. And the
thing is, you watch the play, you'll see it. You'll
see the angle from behind where you see what happened
to Juju Watkins when she comes down and tries to

(36:30):
plant with her right foot and she just comes down
and her her knee just bend sideways, like you have
two defenders on either side. It's a fast break and
everybody's fast. It's kind of out of control a little
bit like this is where I not that you don't
realize where you are on the court, but maybe Juju
Watkins was trying to race by them. I can get
by them and get to the hoop, and then realize
she couldn't. And there was a little you know that

(36:51):
the defender said, okay, we can get in her way
a little bit here, but she still had a path
and you know it wasn't I stuck my foot out
and tripped to you.

Speaker 2 (36:59):
I know you landed on my foot again.

Speaker 1 (37:01):
I saw the dirtiness and the sabanas Jason Tatum play
a little bit more than here. So I hope that
gets acknowledged at some point. Because Lindsay Gottlie didn't talk
about it. There's been no it's been all a lot
of awe how dirty out there? Like you know what
it really was, and it was an unfortunate basketball play
and everybody was trying to make a play on the ball,
and yeah, she got a little bit out of control.

(37:21):
But I think Juju Watkins was out of control because
the play was gone a little too fast. I think
the speed of the play was out of control a
little bit, and that's what contributed more to this.

Speaker 5 (37:31):
Yeah, you had a two on two and she had
two defenders, one on either side, and the interior defender
went to just cut off the lane. Look like, got
a little bit of the arm extended, and you could
see Juju kind of brings her off hand up to
meet that contact and maybe try to do a little
bit of a swim move back in towards the basket.

(37:51):
But that's when the leg fails. So it's just a
question of how much you think the cutting off of
the lane constitutes.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
A dirty play.

Speaker 5 (38:00):
I'll lead that to the basketball players among you that
want to decide that. To me, it's just an unfortunate occurrence,
right whereas the Sabonis play, it's something that's been legislated
very specifically in the NBA rules in terms of being
able to get a clean landing spot and clean followed

(38:20):
through on a jump shot and the jump shooter has
their space. Yeah, so it's, you know, a difficult moment. Obviously,
the the USC women's squad rallied around their falling star
with some big performances of their own. The chippiness as
you say, but seeing how much they can carry that
energy going forward. The top part of the women's brackets

(38:43):
certainly intense. You saw Page Beckers with a career high
thirty four tonight. You've got to address the crowd, yeah
and all that, you know, big time moments.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
And I know Gino doesn't like me. I still want
the ball in my hand. Anyone getting double teamed. I
don't know what he's time talking about. I still love it.

Speaker 1 (39:01):
Look, it's it's a it's a it's a big blow
for women's college basketball because women's college basketball is built
on stars, right, and that's a great thing. Look, the
tournament last year more popular than the men's tournament. This year,
the men's tournament's doing really well again. Women's tournament. It's
a part of the calendar. Now, Women's college basketball WNBA.
That's it. It's big time. And Watkins and Becker's clearly

(39:24):
are the two biggest stars in the game. And now
you've lost the biggest one, arguably the bigger Like she
was better than you know, had a better season than
Page back Page Beckers is a great player, but this
is Juju Watkins year, and she showed how immensely talented
she is a future number one overall pick in the
WNBA drafts up. She comes back from this, But now
you've lost, You've lost half your star power. I mean,

(39:44):
you think we almost went through this recoup. Imagine what
the NCAA tournam would be with no Cooper flag Like,
you can't have a tournament not have Cooper Flagg. Now
you have the women's tournament without ju Ju.

Speaker 5 (39:52):
What are stars and always others emerging? I know a
lot of video highlights TCUs. Haley van lith was on.

Speaker 1 (40:00):
The had a huge game last night's massive He had
a huge game last night, speak.

Speaker 5 (40:05):
Out about some of her struggles and she transferred and
the hugs she shared with coach Man. That's that's what
you're looking for, right that relationship, uh and that rebound.
So we'll watch going forward very intently.
