Now.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
We'll get to that big NFL story in a second.
But today was Day one of the Masters, a tradition
unlike any other, and a couple are really crazy stories,
really fun ones.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Justin Rose, of course, is your leader after day one,
just twenty two putts overall, which is like I put
twenty two times I think on the front nine twenty
two putts. He leads the Masters by three shots. Scotty Scheffler,
who was expected one of the big favorites coming in
Rory McElroy as well. Scheffler had a big night, so
(01:25):
a big day to day. So it looks like we
could have a pretty fun hey, big name down the
stretch if day one pour tens of anything but the
story of the day.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
And it's just insane that this happens.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Is that right now, still within shouting distance after day one,
and like, I don't know how much longer it's going
to be this way, But Freddy Couples.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, boom boom.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Freddy is under par, just the second person sixty five
rover to carry an under par round at the Masters,
and here he is in content after day one, and
it's like, well, I mean, what a what a blast
of the wayback machine, Like, all of a sudden, here's
Freddy Couples. Potentially, Hey could be a player here the
(02:10):
first couple of days of the Masters.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
Tied with a very large group of people for the
eleven slot. Right now we got five nations represented in
the top ten. That's good, but yeah, the fred Couples thing.
As soon as he hit that, he's tied with Brian Harmon.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Not my brother m a n for Brian Harmon, not
mon as our surname.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
But look, I always celebrate the elder statesman in our
sports Jason, because it means that we're still okay, we're
still not quote that old. So Freddy, keep swinging it, buddy.
It's the highlight I've played probably thirty times. Come on,
let's see it again.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Oh Freddy, you want you want a great Freddy Couples story?
You want this is I'll never got a Freddy Couples.
Oh I'll never get a chance tell the story again. Well,
first of all, it's the which I'm glad it didn't
have actually two stories.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
So you know, for a long time.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
My dad used to uh was a marshal at the
Genesis Invitational.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Oh yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
He hasn't been able to do it the last couple
of years. They changed it. They change the rules on him,
is what he says. They change the rules on me.
Speaker 6 (03:10):
Now.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
Oh okay, So he was finally have to check that
box on question fourteen, and he'd avoided.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
For years, and he would joke around with me and
I would say, oh, what do you doing. He goes, well,
one of the things that the marshals does and people
who volunteer, is you.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Know, you get like they they do the whole thing.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
I think it's like a free round of golf and
stay different like this has been a pretty consistent thing
all along for the last like twenty thirty years.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
When you do this, he says.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
His first job was first couple of years, was going
to the airport and picking up the golfers and bringing
them to their hotel or bringing them to the course
wherever they needed to go, like bring what tell the course?
Speaker 3 (03:47):
And I said, wow, I said, they trust you with
They trust you with that. He goes, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,
of course they.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
Trust He goes, well, unless I got Freddie Couples in
the car, then I don't know.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
I'm like, oh, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, don't don't joke
around with that when you're there story time.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Just joke around with me. That's a commercial.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
This is like Freddy in the back seat going this
isn't the way to the golf course.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
What did he have to beef with Freddie Couples?
Speaker 1 (04:11):
No, not beef, like he loved Freddy Couples like Couples,
Oh no, he loved Freddie Couples and Bubba Watson were
too and kJ Choy Right, remember I told you like
hit it? Sure, yeah, Like but Freddie Couples and Bubba
Watson were his two favorite golfers in the last thirty
five years, and he was like, oh my god, you
Bubba's not playing this year. But boy, if Freddy Couples
is there, oh, man, like, Dad, Dad, Dad, don't don't
(04:32):
say that. Don't joke around with that at the at
the course. Just just talk to me about that. Don't
joke around with that.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Don't You're worried about a misery situation happening?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Come on, mister man, kind of like a nicer misery situation.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
No, sure, I'm not saying they were gonna he was
gonna hobble him, right, No.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
I think it's like like Freddy Couple, Hey, is this
Freddy Couples in this hole in the wall bar like
thirty miles outside of LA and Freddie Couples goes, Please
someone call someone, make a phone call for me.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
I'm fred Couples, Please help me.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
What was the uh what was it? Celtic Pride. Oh yeah,
yeah yeah yeah. Dennis Farina was the head coach. Yeah,
Damon Wayans was the was the Uh wait, so Dennis
Farina coach to that too, because he was fired as
the knick Eddie Eddie.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
No, that's right. He was the coaching. He was able
to do both. Yeah yeah, yeah, no, no, he was
the coaching. I had my aughts.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
See what I tell you that when the aughts is
such a huge, you know it'll happen in wasteland.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Yeah. But I mean look at that cast you had.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
Dion Sanders was in there, sure, Paul Guilfoyle before he
was hanging out with my man William Peterson on CSI. Yeah,
I mean, Shooter McGavin was in there for Carling. Had
the great Gail oh Grady. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Oh, I love Gail ever since NYPD Blue all My
she's in all those Hallmark movies now, like Geo Grady's
and a lot of them.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, she's married like six times. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Now she's like the mom in the I'm like, ah, really.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Well but still active, still getting after it. Yeah. Same,
we're not that old. Yeah, if it's too loud, you're
too old. Right.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
So so here's this is my best Fred couple story.
So this is back in ninety three. I'm going back
thirty years, right, But because I remember this today is
that I just started working at ESPN as.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
A production assistant.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
And you know, you go in at like three o'clock
in the afternoon and you get assigned a game that's
your game is supposed to be. You're supposed to watch
that game, take it into the edit bay, and edit
the highlight that they run on Sports Center, right, So
that was what everybody did when they first started. So
I come at three o'clock and I haven't been there
that long, and the guy in charge, the manager, says, oh, Jason,
(06:41):
glad you're here. I'm like, I can't believe you know
who I am. I've been here like a week and
a half. Hey, you need to watch the first day
at DURL. It's coming in right now. You're cutting a
highlight for the six o'clock Sports Center. It's the lead store.
You got a minute and a half. And I'm going, okay,
because you know six o'clock at night, you know the
Sports Center, there's not a lot of highlights from the day,
and it just happened to be one of those days
(07:02):
where there was no baseball that I'm like okay, and
I sit down and I go I.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Know absolutely nothing about golf. Oh my good.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
The only golfer I knew because then, you know then
obviously in the in the years there, that's kind of
where I'm all my golf knowledge came from, because I
really started enjoying and appreciating it. I started playing it
a lot, you know, a long time ago. I'm like,
I don't know anybody like I knew just a couple
of names. I'm like, I don't know what am I
gonna look for. I have no idea, and I gotta
I'm gonna edit this, and it's the first thing they're
going to be in the show, and it's like going
to be like a minute a half highlights.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
I'm going, oh my god.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
The only golfer I knew, really that I knew was
good was Fred Couples that was playing. That's the only one,
because he had just won the Masters and he had
the best year of his girl like he was gad Like,
it's hard to not know Fred Couples, right, Sure.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
And your dad had his poster up on his wall.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
No, no, that back then, I didn't know that. I
don't think my dad. My dad back then was probably
you know, hey, Ben and J. C. Snead are my
two biggest golfer. So I'm like, okay, I guess I
will all right, fine, yeah, okay, I'll all hit the highlight.
So I edit the highlight and I put in Fred
Couple like like six times, right like in a minute,
because he's the only guy I really knew. And I'm like, okay,
(08:06):
this guy's up at the top of the leaderboard. But
is how great of a shot is this? I don't know.
So I put Fred Couples in like six times, and
I'm going I don't. So I go the highlight and
I put it in and and and I'm kind of nervous,
and I'm sitting to the back and I'm watching the
highlight as it airs on Sports Center, and everything is
is fine, like Bob Lee voices over the highlight, everything
is fine. Here's another Hey Fred Couples, Fred Couples. Boom, oh,
(08:28):
Freddie Couples, Freddy Couples.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Okay great. I'm like oh.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
And then a couple of people PA's who had been
there longer than I was like, wow, that's a lot
of Freddie Couples in that wasn't it was?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
It was there? Better stuff? Was there? Better stuff?
Speaker 1 (08:38):
I'm like, blank, you man, I watched it, okay, but
and they were like, ohho, go look at it.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
I'm like, oh, man, okay.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
So I'm thinking, okay, maybe that's not that this wasn't
the best job I did, but who knows. And then
the guy my manager, says, hey, Jason, the producer of
the show wants to talk to.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
You now, and I go, oh no, oh okay.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
So it's like it's like it's like seven o'clock and
the I'm gonna watch is starting in like twenty minutes.
I'm hoping to run to McDonald's and get food, and
I'm going, okay, wow, I'm in trouble. I'm never going
to get a golf highlight again. They're gonna hate me
because you started on a six month probationary period. Sure
you well enough, after six months they said you're gone.
You're gone, they fire you. So I'm like, okay, this
(09:19):
is the first one. I want to walk in and
tell him I just did it because they gave me
the assignment. And the producer says to me, hey, your highlight.
He goes that you had a lot of thought in that.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
That was great.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
I'm so glad you spotlight Fred Couples. He was the
biggest name at the event. Like that was pretty good.
You know, what do you do?
Speaker 3 (09:37):
You have? You cut a lot of golf highlights.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
I go, no, I've been here like a week now,
I'm been here with he goes yeah, he goes out.
You really followed the storyline, and apparently Freddy Couples was
the biggest golfer there, Like there wasn't a lot of
other guys. You know, I know that there was a
lot of them in the highlight, but you know, hey,
everybody wants to see fred Couples more than they want
to see any of these other guys. No, that was
really good. I'm like, okay, And that was the point
in my life when I realized, if someone's com implementing
(10:00):
you and and and you have a lot of questions,
you just say thank you and you walk away. Hey thanks,
So I said, hey, thanks, really appreciate that. Awesome? Okay, great, great.
So I walked back. I'm like, yeah, where's that. Where's
a PA's that been there like four months longer than.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Me going oh that highlight, that highlight. So I was
like feeling pretty good.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
But then the next few months I became the go
to guy for golf highlights early in the day, like
every day.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I came in at three point thirty.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
It was hey, Jason, sit down and watch the deposit guarantee. Jase,
sit down and watch the first day of the Greater
Hartford Open. Jason, You're gonna cut this. I'm like, oh
my god. I had golf like every day for like
three months.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Oh boy, I want to go watch the match. Can
I go watch the match? Leepy me.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
But then I started doing more research on it and
understanding more people. I'm like because in the one highlight
where there were hardly anybody else there, and I still
remember the shot I put in a couples missing a putt,
he like three putted and he put the club of
the and he put his club like on his forehead
and he banged it on his forehead, and I was like,
oh my god, Like, hey, that was a great shot
to get in there. Oh my god, that was so awesome.
(11:02):
You put in a great reaction shot. I'm like, yeah,
oh great. So I became the golf guy. I was
like the pier. I'd walk in at three thirty because
a lot of people going at three thirty and they
don't do anything their game is at seven and they
just get to hang around and some because it's a
lot of people. It's like fifty people coming in PA's
and they're all different things, and there's two people in charge.
When someone needs to do something, they grab them at
the So some people you come in form like four
(11:23):
if not doing anything right, that's what it was. No no,
oh golf, Oh here, yeah, I know I'm doing that golf.
So I would sweat my ass off cutting a highline
for this golf thing because I didn't really know the
sport and then like, okay, now you got a baseball
game or a basketball gamer.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Oh man, all.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Because of Freddy Couples. Freddy couples starting to be off
on that run right there.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
I gotta have more couples. Gotta gotta have Freddy couples.
I gotta have it. I gotta have Freddy couples. You
gotta give me trilling. When he came down you, yeah,
I mean you walk up to you.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
The other guys they're like, oh what you got called
to the principal's office and producer. What did he have
to say? I said, I gotta have more couples. It's like,
but your head six shots.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
In there already. It's like I didn't enough.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Who got that highlight with Freddy Couples? Oh man, that
was chasing? All right, hey, okay give him everything else.
I'm like, please, can I walk in and just said nope, nope,
here I am on Friday. Hey, it's cut down day, Chason.
Let me know when they when they make the cut.
What the cut's at there?
Speaker 3 (12:18):
The sure? Sure? Oh my god, my god. Okay, yeah,
but think.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
About the golf guys, the guys that got golfer or
the women that got golf.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Later on, it was just just watch Tiger Yeah yeah,
oh exactly, yeah, it does. Anybody else doesn't matter. You
just watched Tiger Woods. Just watch Tiger Woods's all you
get all his facial expressions. H t is a curse word.
Make sure we get it, you know all of that. Yeah,
what about McElroy. No, we don't need any of those guys.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Show me to tell you what. Nah doesn't matter going
into the weekend.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
He is obviously the the non live favorite, and all
of that heavy, heavy betting market on Rory McElroy. You
want to talk about an overweighted proposition of Hey, who's
everybody's money on that guy?
Speaker 3 (13:02):
No pressure here. That's hey, Freddy. I hope Freddy wins.
I mean, oh no, Freddy.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
I mean he comes in like this would be what
an awful because I remember it wasn't too long ago.
What was the year when when Watson at the Open
Championship like came down to a putt on the last
hole and he could have forced a playoff. This when
he was like in his late fifties, and I was like,
oh my goodness, Tom Watson could actually win. He had
an incredible run over the weekend. I forget where it was.
(13:30):
Maybe it was a Troon or Carnoustie, I forget, but
all it came down to, like if he hit which
and you know, his whole career, Tom Watson putting was
his thing, right, I told you thirty.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Years I've been, I've been, I've been studying.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
God Like, I think he had a putt on eighteen
that if he hit it could have forced a playoff,
and he didn't and he lost. I forget who won,
but it was such a I mean that's kind of
what I feel like for Freddie Couples here. And look,
the Masters clearly as one of those courses where you know, hey,
playing there for so long, You're only going to stick
around for a certain amount of time because really the
(14:02):
length and the scores going low is what's really going
to do it for you. It's you know, if you're
going to really stick around as an older golfer, it's
got to be where the elements work at you, or
the course works at you and takes away the advantage
other people have, Like you know, I mean, Freddie Couple's
one of the most was the longest hitter on the
tour for so long, and now, of course.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
He's sixty five.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
He watches guys just you know, fly by him obviously,
So I hope he sticks around. I doubt it, but
it would be an unbelievable story if he does. You
were taking us back to two thousand and nine Open Championship.
Is that what we're looking to do over at turn
Property Jordan Scotland. Ah, very nice, Okay, all right, that's
where it was, okay, And he had a putt on
eighteen that wasn't It wasn't a really, it wasn't like
(14:43):
it was incredibly difficult. It was like a fifteen footer
or something, I think, and if he hit it, it
would have been with.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Oh my god.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
Tom Watson's like sixteen, he's in't a playoff? Yeah, ends
up with Stuart Sink.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Yeah. And there you.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
Go, Exit out bout of Fresca, Exit Swollen Dome, that
walk down Memory Lane.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
How about that thirty years ago of Freddy Couples.

the hallway and everybody says, hey, boom, boom, it's Isaac Lowenkron.
Speaker 7 (15:33):
Jason Jason, Thank goodness that you have the knowledge to
cut highlights. This is a miracle. I actually need justin
Rose's eighth birdie of the day. I need his birdie
put on the sixteenth hole, and I need it in
the next five seconds. Can you do it?
Speaker 1 (15:52):
You think, okay, everything you just said right there, if
instead of five seconds you said two and a half minutes,
that's how it.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Came you bad.
Speaker 7 (15:59):
Sorry, need work, I need it in five seconds. So
here we go.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
I was reading into a lot of subtext there. I love.
Speaker 7 (16:06):
Justin Rose leads the Masters a three shot lead after
a seven under sixty five.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Today needs the pace Andie's got it. What a punt
from Justin Rose? Can't you believe it? Ned? There's no
stopping him right now.
Speaker 7 (16:23):
That's unbelievable. Jason, how'd you do that?
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Ah?
Speaker 3 (16:26):
You know you asked me to do what I did.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Now with the technology and now everything is on server
instead a video, it's a lot easier.
Speaker 7 (16:32):
You can't to the rescue there.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
You know, I took an extra ten seconds I think
it was. It was more fifteen seconds.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Five. Oh, we fill a bustard nicely. Yeah, that's all good.
Speaker 7 (16:42):
It's like riding a bicycle, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
That's right, that's right. He's never ridden a bicycle in
his life. I mean.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
But here's the thing, honestly, is that when you think
about what it was like to edit a highlight in
the nineties versus now, Oh my gosh, here's a videotape.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
You record it, you pop it out of the out.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Of the system, you bring it into a room, you
dub it over, you tell them where to edit, get
in and out. Then you take it out, bring it
into the room like you need five or ten minutes.
Whereas now it's like, oh, this highlight just happened. Oh yeah,
give me thirty seconds and you can have the highlight.
Oh great, that's technology.
Speaker 7 (17:14):
It was hell back then, wasn't it. I tell my kids,
we actually had to get up and walk over to
the TV uphill in the snow both ways.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
That's right.
Speaker 7 (17:24):
Justin Rose three shot lead over Scotti, Scheffler, Corey Cotters
and Ludwig Oberg. All of them shot a sixty eight.
Today in the NBA, the Indiana Pacers held off the
Cleveland Cavaliers one fourteen to one twelve for their sixth
straight win, and they also clinch a top four seed
in the Eastern Conference. Kate Kattagam scored thirty six of
the Pistons one fifteen to one oh six win over
(17:46):
the New York Knicks, Bucks winning over New Orleans one
thirty six to one eleven. Yiannis on tenakunpo twenty eight points,
eleven rebounds, five assists. One game going on right now.
At halftime, the Memphis Grizzlies will lead the Minnesota Timberwolves
seventy two to sixty seven. Baseball, they're still in a
rain delay. In Atlanta, Phillies and Braves tied at one
the seventh, Then in Kyle Schwarborough home run for Philadelphia,
(18:09):
his sixth of the season to lead the National League. Finally,
in the NFL, it was announced today that Brent Musburger
has been inducted into the Broadcasters wing of the Pro
Football Hall of Fame. Musburger spent sixteen years as the
host of the NFL Today, at program that really set
the standard for modern sports television pregame shows. Here's how
(18:29):
it sounded in nineteen eighty seven when Musburger set the
stage for Super Bowl twenty one.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
You are looking live at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
One hundred and one thousand fans will gather in this
venerable stadium for the biggest singles sporting event of the year.
The American Football Conference champion Denver Broncos has meet the
National Football Conference champion New York Giants.
Speaker 7 (18:51):
This is the super Bowl And that was actually edited
twenty seconds ago by Jason Beck to you.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
You know, the funny thing is my dad.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Every time you would see that, like I'd watch games,
my dad, he always had a great line like you
would hear that line, and that was always Brent Musburger
is saying you are looking live ere he would say,
and my dad, would you allow him?
Speaker 4 (19:07):
Go?
Speaker 3 (19:08):
No crap, Brent, Oh, I thought this was a tape
of the Super Bowl. Well, I won't say that. If
it was an NBA Finals game at the time, it
would have been.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Every single time you are looking on the taball that's great,
We're looking live.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
All right, great, thanks, thank you. I appreciate it. Buddy.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
Wow, hateful on, good old Brett Musberger. Congratulation go cats.
By the way, if you need some Freddy Couples action
twenty five hundred to one right now, get it on.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
Boom boom right now, baby, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
I love Jason and Mike live from thetirec dot coms.
All right, so we wanted to get to that Freddy
Couple that was set. That was Gregage deal today, I
mean Freddy Couples and the Masters. This is such an
amazing story, but coming up next. Yes, an NFL quarterback
had an Instagram message for all of the haters and
non believers today. That's not Aaron Rodgers. I think he's
gonna get a message right back at him. And it's
(19:56):
coming up next Jason and Mike Fox.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio App with.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
A Whoop whoop and a boom boom and and.
Speaker 3 (20:14):
Got oh and a Mets Mets.
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon. A big story out of the NFL today,
Deshaun Watson Remember.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Him like to boyd?
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Watson decides to put a message on Instagram. He's been
rehabbing after retearing his right achilles tendon, a situation acts
going to sideline him for most, if not all, of
the twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Remember was just a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
Jimmy Hasslim, owner of The Brown said, hey, listen, it
was a swing and a miss on Deshaun Watson. Well,
Deshaun Watson is still working out rehabbing at the Browns facility,
and he wants people to know that, Hey, you haters
and downers, wait till.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
I come back strong.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
Okay, by that, you mean twenty twenty, right, Like he's
not gonna be back to it.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
You mean like twenty twenty.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
You mean like six years ago is what it's gonna
be when you're ready to play again, that you're gonna
be that good again. Deshaun Watson has to understand his
NFL career is over. It's he's not going to take
another snap in the league because he can't stay healthy.
He's been hurt all three of the years he's with
(21:26):
the Browns, never played more than seven games in a season,
He's out all of this year. He is no good,
he's been bad, he's been unmotivated, and so, okay, those
two things enough is gonna tell you. And he's still
nuclear because of the massage situation. Who's going to bring
in a guy that is nuclear, who stinks and hasn't
(21:48):
been good in five years now six years, and can't
stay healthy.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
Who's gonna say, yep, let's bring him in.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
I mean, I know that there's lots of teams that
are gonna say, hey, we'll try to get a great
quarterback cheap.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
But it is Helen gone for Deshaun Watson.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Like, I mean, this is here, he is saying, dude,
you're not playing in the NFL again.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
If he's lucky you play in the CFL.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
You'll play there, you know, try try to, you know,
re rehabilitate his career has image everything else. Go play
in the CFL. No one, you are not playing in
the NFL again. You have taken your last snap in
the league.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
Well, we watch how difficult it is for veteran quarterbacks
who still have a bit of something to get a job, right.
Whatever the dance is going on with Aaron Rodgers. Before that,
it was Russell Wilson. Is he getting a job?
Speaker 3 (22:37):
All right?
Speaker 5 (22:38):
Eventually he gets a deal with the Giants who had
already signed Jamis Winston, who already have been tangentially linked
to some of these quarterbacks in this draft. Right, So
I mean you go all the way through, it's still
a tough road. He hasn't played, as you said, meaningful
football since twenty twenty. Then they had the operation shutdown
here whatever the hell that was back in twenty twenty one.
(23:01):
You want to talk about documentaries, I kind of want
to watch, because I say kind I'd be doing something.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Else while it was on in the background. I'm not
gonna lie to you of what really.
Speaker 5 (23:10):
What transpired that twenty twenty one season where he sat
down and then he goes to Cleveland gets the bag.
Maybe he's in the Hall of Fame for NFL business
based on getting that deal, But in terms of being
a quality player, he's he's been what's the one word
that we always say, it comes back, there's.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
Only one thing wrong with him. There's only one thing wrong. Really,
all those things I just said, it's really only one thing. Yeah,
you know, all those things, go ahead and land put
them all into one pot. There's only one thing wrong.
You know what that is?
Speaker 3 (23:38):
What is that? Buddy?
Speaker 1 (23:39):
He stinks That's what it comes out to all of this. Yes,
we can rehabilitate you. We can find a way to
sign you. If you were any good. And he's not
been any good.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
You think it's it.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
You're terrible, and you bring all sorts of smoke that
the team that has to deal with now, Yeah, but
it'll be in the best shape of his life.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
He's done.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Yeah, when he play, he goes playing the CFL or
someplace else. Right, That's what he's gonna have to do.
That's gonna be it for him. Exit out about a
Fresca exit swollen Dome. The Jason Smith Show with Mike
Carmon Live from the Tirac dot Com Studios. Speaking of football,
we know the one story that's gonna dominate every day
between now and the Draft.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
What is it that's next? Fox?
Speaker 2 (24:18):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (24:29):
Fox Sports Radio, a tradition unlike any other, true Live
from the tire Rack dot Com Studios and Butler Cabin.
Here we are talking about the first great golf of
end of the year. We're not gonna mention Tiger Wood's
not playing. Anybody that doesn't know. Don't want to ruin
it for him. Maybe you're watching thinking you'll see Tiger
(24:50):
Woods play. Even if you won't, maybe you'll see Fred Couples,
sixty five years old making it through the weekend, and
oh what a story that would be.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
What do you think about that?
Speaker 1 (25:03):
Tony Romo, Jim Jim for a couples is like ninety
Jim Jim and he still plays got white hair now,
Jim Jim Jim.
Speaker 3 (25:11):
His nickname is Boom Boom Jim. How cool is that?
Jim Jim Jim.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
I think Jim Nance and Tony Romo in the in
the booth would be pretty good. And Tony's a golfing right, yeah,
you know he's a golfer.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
Haven't happened. But that's just it.
Speaker 5 (25:24):
Even if it's the second screen experience, give me the
second scream experience.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
Come on, what do we see ahead this weekend? What
do we see from the NFL Draft? Time to head
to Vegas. Nobody better to talk with than Vegas insider
extraordinary Todd Furman. He is on Twitter at Todd Furman,
former odds maker. Check out the Bet the Board podcast
as well. See him on CBS Todd.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
What's happening, Bud, Yo, gentlemen, This is a tough time
of year for me. It's the rare instances we get
into April where I actually have to pretend I followed
the NBA through a meaningless regular season. I'm going to
start actually paying attention as the teams and players begin
to care about the games that they'll play over the
next two months.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Yeah, I mean, do you have that thing where you go, hey,
after the All Star Game, we basically take a break
NBA wise because we don't care, why should they, and
then we'll get back to betting as we got closer
to the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (26:18):
I mean, the NBA is not a sport that I
bet on a night at night out basis, so I
have to be transparent in that regard. But I know
it's definitely creates some trials and tribulations for folks that
do trying to figure out what players are going to
be in the lineup, what players are going to be out.
You get all sorts of enigmatic results, like we saw
earlier this week with the Warriors losing outright as a
seventeen and a half point favorite to the San Antonio Spurs.
(26:39):
At least when we start the play in tournament next week,
you know that everybody is going to be fully entrenched.
And it's not just teams jockey and proceeding looking to
try and win to get into certain spot there or
are some cases lose to avoid various opponents.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
Todd.
Speaker 5 (26:52):
One of the results we saw this week we watched
the dramatic return of Luca Doncis to Dallas over under
was thirty and a half for his points. Smith dubbed
it the easiest bet ever to make.
Speaker 4 (27:03):
What's say you pretty impressive result as far as Luca
going home and wanting to try and make a statement,
His points, rebounds assists for that night was forty eight
and a half and he'd only gone over that in
one previous game as a member of the Lakers. Clearly,
this was a spot he had circled and wanted to
go out there improve a point, and he essentially did that.
So the Dallas Mavericks fans and attendance can't be thrilled.
(27:26):
They did a good job with the tribute video and
the Lakers right now, you know, I listed as the
fourth favorite on the board to win the NBA Championship
at a price tag right around fifteen to one, and
it puts them behind only the Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics,
and Cleveland Cavaliers. So we'll see if the star power
can carry them through. But as far as the West
is concerned, plenty of intriguing series and a lot of
(27:46):
land mines for even some of the favorites.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
Todd over under the rest of the season for rescinded
technicals for Luca.
Speaker 3 (27:53):
If you play, I put it three and a half,
what would you take?
Speaker 4 (27:56):
I have to imagine that the officials are going to
be extremely judic before they hand out another technical off
Lucas bantering back and forth with fans. As always, as
fans of any sport, you want to see your superstars
out there. So an over zealous official with a quick
whistle took what was going to be a close game
for the Lakers in Thunder and turned into a little
(28:16):
bit of a lopsided contest. But I think even in
the wake of that loss on the ultimate cover for
Oklahoma City, it showed that the Lakers are at least
going to be able to push the Thunder if that's
a matchup we get. And you always wonder about the
stars at the top of the Lakers roster and their
capabilities versus the Thunder, who have a ton of difference makers,
are a tremendous defensive team, but outside of Shay Gilles Alexander,
(28:38):
sometimes you begin to wonder who can be their secondary
scoring options in a game of that magnitude.
Speaker 5 (28:43):
God, we're marveling at the Masters, particularly Fred Couples and
the Eagle, and he's twenty five hundred to one. How
much betting is done on an event in the golf landscape,
and that sub sub question is the Roy ma Kero
seems to be everybody's favorite.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Is that followed the money as well.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
Single biggest golf betting event of the year. Sportsbooks do
a great job of putting out odds to win the
Masters essentially once this tournament will come to completion on Sunday,
so you have the better part of eleven months to
try and get down and it creates a little bit
of volatility, especially further down the board. You're not going
to get long shot prices on Rory or Scotty or
some of the biggest names in the sport, but you
(29:24):
can find guys that start the year pretty hot and
that may end up giving you an opportunity to kind
of build around those particular investments. As far as Rory,
when you look at where he is chasing Justin Rose
seven strokes back, odds makers giving him a ton of respect,
and I think rightfully so when you see Rory's number
drifted out about seven and a half to one before
the tournament. Now out to twelve, and that's reflected across
(29:47):
the board. I know Justin Rose, at least on paper
as a three stroke lead, and it can't be discounted.
But odds makers still have Scotty to favor. His odds
have shortened substantially from a price tag of four and
a half to one now down to two. Ludvig Olbert
number two twenty five to one pre tournament down to six.
Justin Rhodes of course, Justin Rose, of course, the big
winner and all of that one hundred and ten to
one coming into Augusta. He's now the third favorite at
(30:09):
seven and a half to one. It's in prominent sportsbooks.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
All right, Tod, Let's head to the draft. We talked
about this earlier look. The status and where Shador Sanders
gets drafted is going to be the topic between now
and the NFL Draft. From what you're seeing and hearing
in Vegas, if I said to you the most likely
outcome for Shadoor Sanders based on what you're hearing, is
what that he's.
Speaker 4 (30:32):
Going to fall a little bit further than people are
led to believe.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
As far as what outside the top ten, like outside
the top ten like well like where do you say.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
If you want to bet Shador Sanders in a one
way market, So keep that in mind. To be a
pick inside of the top five, you can get a
price return of about two to one, and I think
that you would see substantial money coming in on the
NOH if that was the case. Now with quarterbacks, it's
always a little bit different, Smith, because you have to
imagine if Shador is there seven, eight, nine, ten and
a team, he's going to be their guy that they're
(31:01):
going to trade up. So all it takes is one
team to fall in love with you, especially as a quarterback,
and it kind of throws a wrench into things. But
as far as the price is out there now on
Shador and the team to draft him, I think that's
a very interesting market. Because the Saints have moved to
the forefront as the favorite. Now that price will get
you right around three to one. The Steelers second on
that board, priced neck and neck with the Giants in
(31:24):
that four and a half five to one range, and
then lo and behold your beloved New York Jets now
force on the board to try and select Shador Sanders
and make him the quarterback of the future for game
Green oh, we.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
Love justin Field. Justin Field is our guy? Hey, Shiador Sanders?
Is there draft Jador Sanders? We love j Sante.
Speaker 4 (31:41):
Yeah, we know, we know how this is going to
go for the Jets. Let's knock sugarcoat it in any capacity.
I still think though the Jets are going to use
their first round pick on an offensive lineman to try
and create a little bit more depth in the trenches.
But if you think that a quarterback is going to
be the order of the day, you know, seven to
one kind of the going rate should they have fallen
in rove with Shad or Sanders, Jackson Darda or a
(32:02):
player to be named later.
Speaker 5 (32:03):
That has actually been one of my the curious things
I've been following in the betting circle stot of by
individual team what player will be their first selected, So
is it an offensive lineman and is it a quarterback?
Speaker 3 (32:16):
And then odds there app for each of those positions.
I think it is an interesting way of examining the
draft one.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
Hundred percent, and I think you can isolate some of
these teams and try and figure out where you have
a higher level of conviction you'll Last year, the Jets
were a massive favorite to take an offensive lineman with
that tenth overall pick. I allowed folks that wanted to
take some shots, thinking that they might add an offensive
weapon in brock Bowers to get some long shot pricing.
But I think for Raiders fans must of their chagrin.
(32:43):
And I'll bring this up to Plank on Sunday night
because I love the needle in whenever I get the opportunity.
The running back position is a dollar forty five favorite
for the Raiders for their first drafted player. You look
up and down that roster. I'm not sure that's what's
going to get the Raiders over the hump, even if
they think they have a dynamic runner in Ashton Genty
out of Boise State. We've seen Pete Carroll make this
(33:04):
mistake before. Fortunately for Raiders fans, he probably won't draft
eight running back out of San Diego State this time around.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
I will say this though, Todd, I see a lot
of running backs coming off the board the first couple rounds.
It may not be quarterbacks, may not be the order
of the of the draft here, but I see tons
of running backs coming off in those first sixty four picks.
Speaker 4 (33:24):
I think we'll see a number of guys start to go.
I mean, clearly, Ashton Genty is an overwhelming favorite to
be that first guy. And that's where things start to
get a little bit more interesting in terms of who
you believe will be the second running back drafted. Most
signs right now, given the media interviews and the way
he has risen up on some of the draft forecasters boards,
would be their running back out of North Carolina, Marion Hampton.
(33:46):
So we'll see how that looks. But again, that's a
position that if one player's skill set fits a little
bit different, maybe they fall in love with Travian Henderson
in the process. Maybe it's Quinn, Shawn Judkins or somebody else,
but I think it's Ashton Genty the first back o
Marion Hampton number. And that's where things start to get
a little bit squarely.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
Third on down the line, Todd, last one for me,
how can I what kind of odds can I get
on the Knicks losing in the first round? Oh?
Speaker 3 (34:08):
Come on, manok.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
The price tag on the Knicks in their series if
we look ahead for them, you know, potentially on a
crash course to take on to the Detroit Pistons barring
some unforeseen change, if the Indiana Pacers can get by
the next the Knicks will be substantial favorites. And you
would think, given any level of veteran experience, that they're
going to open as a substantial favorite. So if you
think the upstar Pistons can get the job done, you'll
(34:32):
get a pretty aggressive price tag out there HERM and
a lifetime's worth of material that you can rip Smith
for for the next eleven plus months.
Speaker 1 (34:40):
He's on Twitter at Todd Furman, that is at Todd Furman.
Check out the bet the Board podcast as well.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
See him on CBS. Todd has always buddy, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Man.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 4 (34:50):
You got a gentleman. Enjoy a great weekend at golf
and whatever whatever other sporting pursuits are.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
On the radar.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Now.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
We'll get some more on Onredeur Sanders up next hour.
But it's interesting to hear, you know, you hear all
the different possibilities for him of you know, top two,
top three off the board, by the top ten falling
through the draft, and you know, as more time goes on,
there's been more of the falling through the draft, and
(35:18):
there's been in the top five of the draft. Just
seeing the way things are going, it looks like a
fall for Shador Sanders's coming.
Speaker 5 (35:25):
Yeah, I know it's gonna be interesting to see, right
who is there a team that loves him enough to
just say we have to have him, because we've seen
that in the past. But for this year, Yeah, there's
more intrigue at the top of the draft. Can't wait
to cover it all with you, as we do each
and every year here on Fox after mister Perfecto gets
things going as well, so it'll be brilliant.
