Speaker 2 (00:23):
If you're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Hello, Welcome inside. Happy Tuesday, The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Carmon. Special delivery Steve de Sager in for Harmon
tonight and a big night for Steve to Sager because
he called me today and said, Jason, take the magic,
lay the points, and look at what's happening right now.
In the first play in game four minutes to go,

(00:48):
Orlando will be moving on to face Boston. They lead
it one, fourteen to eighty seven. Clearly for the Hawks,
it's either we get up and get full of vim
and vigor and juice to play the Knicks, but everybody
else will just lay down. That's kind of the Hawks. One.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
If I had called you, that would indicate some sort
of interest in an Atlanta Hawks game. So no that
it did not occur.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
But for there's only two games tonight, Steve, there's only
two games.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Fortunately, this one is almost over. As for the Atlanta Hawks,
it was looking like anybody who selected the opponent tonight, well,
this onde's going to be racing to a twenty five
to thirty point win. It just it's gonna get there.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Eventually. They took the circuitous route.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Let's say, yeah, no, it just took a little while.
And you look, Atlanta had a did have a good
third quarter, and you thought, maybe it's gonna get close
in the fourth, and absolutely that did not happen. Orlando
is just blowing the doors off, out scoring him.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
By twenty one just in the fourth.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Right now, who I mean a Cole Anthony has twenty
six off the bench for the Magic. He's four to
nine from three point range. Like this is an absolute
burial by the Magic over the Hawks. Now I'm not
saying that, hey, look out for the Magic all of u.
Suddenly they are a seventh seed. They're a five and
a team for a reason. But of all the teams
in the East, of all the teams in the East,

(02:03):
you would say, hey, who can come out of the
first playing first round of play ins and potentially do
the most damage. It would be the magic, the magic
of a pretty good base. They just they're just missing
a little bit. I mean the East, you have the
top heavy teams there, but the Magic have a lot
of talent, and it's just you know, they're not far off.

(02:23):
And this is a team that, yeah, in a series,
yeah they I could see the Magic causing some problems.
Now for the Celtics, they'd have to really be injured
all the way across and just absolutely not even show up.
But the magic of all the teams in the East,
the magic of a pretty good team. They got a
pretty thing going on in Orlando.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Right, And if ben Cao and Wagner on the court
at the same time, and they are and you mentioned
the bench, sure, sure. And as far as the Atlanta Hawks,
they're gonna be forty and forty three after tonight. But
guess what, in this is not your father's NBA. Things
are not over for the Atlanta Hawks. There's a last
chance game for them on Friday, because you see, kids,

(03:00):
the Tuesday game losers still get to play Friday with
the last chance to earn the eighth seed for the postseason.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
That begins this weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
You get one more chance. How happy are you to
see that? And look, obviously the hog Look and I
told you the surprise team. I gave you my surprise
Team's gonna come out of the the East playing. I'm
taking the Bulls. The Bulls have been dynamic the last
the last few weeks, they've been might be playing. Yeah,
he's supposed to play, like everything everything seems to be

(03:30):
pointed to him playing. But him and Kobe White have
been so dynamic, and Vucevich has been really good. I mean,
there are twelve games over five hundred since the All
Star Break. And you say, well, okay, that's not bad. Yeah,
but look at the teams in the playing round It's
not like all these teams have great records. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
No, these think they're opponent tomorrow the Miami Heat thirty
seven and forty five. And they haven't been put out
of their misery yet.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
No, no, no, if I can put it that way,
yeah no, Like I said, with the playing rounds, it's uh,
it's really yeah. The Eastern Conference has just happen to
be televised. The Western Conference. That's where the drama is
all a lot.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Of fi I'm not against the play in tournament, by
the way, and it does do something like for the
final day of the season. Here, we just experienced it
meant something, meant something on Sunday for instead of just people.
You know, most of the games were just worthless and
not we're seeing on Sunday some meant something and you know,
we're getting a play in. And then the bad news is,

(04:24):
do you know this is the third straight year that
in the East play in. We've had Atlanta and Miami
and Chicago three yeah, straight years. So it's a little
like March Madness, which got talked about a few weeks ago.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
We love the upsets and then.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
We wind up Wait a minute, it's George Mason against
Eastern Michigan on Thursday night.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
What what's going on here?

Speaker 1 (04:43):
So well, but here's where I spin it forward for
you and make it great. Hey. The Eastern Conference Playing
Round has three of the official Playing Round teams of
the playing Round. Yes, we have the Magic, we have
the Bulls, we have the Hawks, we have the official
tried and true heritage teams of the player tournament, all
doing battle. Tune in because you know these guys, hey,

(05:04):
they are absolutely experiencing the plane. We see them every year.
They're the official plan.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
And I will add Golden State can be on that
list as well, because until today I did not realize
Golden State's not only been in a lot, but never
want to playing game at oz to three.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah. Yeah, they're looking to break that record here tonight.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Now.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Look, that's the thing is that this is how rough
the Western Conference is because if you think, okay, Warriors
over the passage the trade deadline, Boy, they've been pretty
good since they got Jimmy buckets. Right, they're one of
the big run when they got them. They've been really good. Right,
they've been really good. Where are they They're in the
playing round, right, I mean they've been really good. They
all trade deadline and they're in the.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
Playing Almost won fifty games this year, yeah, and they're
playing they like seventeen and four at one point after
the acquisition and Jimmy Butler and right, they don't even
finish in the top six because they couldn't win a
home game on the final day of the season on Sunday,
lost in overtime, and that's why they drop to the
seven seed. And that's why Golden State is about to

(06:04):
play at home against Memphis.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
I'm waiting for Steve Kerr for the end of season
press conference and go. You know, the NBA needs to
do something about the seedings for the playing rounds and
the teams that have the best records should be in
the playoffs no matter what. Yeah, give me a chance.
If you have the worst records, you have to be
in the play in round. Why or why are we
in the play in round? And clearly we're better than
almost half the teams in the Eastern Conference. I'm waiting

(06:27):
for that because you know that's not too far away
this whole You know, the Western Conference is really a
lot better, and it's not really unfair what they're doing
by putting the same number of playoff teams in the East.
But then you'll know that's coming.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
He'll let it slip and say, and why do the
Tampa Bay Bucks keep getting a home playoff game?

Speaker 4 (06:41):
People?

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (06:42):
Sorry, much sport.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
While I'm at it, you know, they're talking about maybe
doing something. I think May is the next owners meetings
for the NFL doing something about playoff seating.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
They have. They have way too many owners meetings now,
Like remember used to be, Hey, the one off season
owners meeting with everybody he is there. This is where
you had to get momentum for any rule changes you wanted,
any trades you wanted to make.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Now are we found out every year that Jeff Fisher
was on the Competition Committee.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Yes, he actually wore a button that said Hi, I'm Jeff,
I'm on the Competition Committee. But like that was like, okay,
the one time, the one now I feel like they
have it's like once a month they have an owner's meeting,
but the GM meeting that the owners are at, then
another owner's meeting, then another rule meeting with the owners.
Like it's like every month there's a meeting.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Now, well, it gives you the ability to kick the
can down the road because there was something that, oh,
apparently we don't have support for it this past month.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
Hey, you know what, we got another meeting company up
in May.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Can we just freak it in. Maybe we can twist
some people's arms between now and May and get where
we wanted to vote.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
But you know all the useless meetings that people have
in offices every single do we need another meeting? Do
we have another meeting? Well, if it's gonna be catered, okay,
But now it's got its way to the NFL. Ya,
we'll have another meeting. You really have to have another meeting.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Some meetings are catered and some meetings are you're reminding
me of when the Reds used to be on by
Marge Shot, which is not ancient history, but she was on.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
The cover of Sports Illustrated smoking a cigarette.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
She I mean, she was the owner of the world
champion Cincinnati Reads in nineteen ninety. But when they had
the upper management meetings, it was donuts only, and then
after the meetings, if there were leftover donuts, she had
them placed out for the normal regular office workers with
a sign that said twenty five cents.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yeah, I'm not kidding.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
And you wonder why. It's a short step to saying, hey,
Eric Davis lacerated his kidney winning the World Series. You're
gonna pay for his flight up. No, not paying for that. No,
he can get back here wherever he needs to. But
he got hurt playing for you here, lacerated his kidney.
He's been in the hospital. Yeah, now he'll get back
in something.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I know someone who used to work in Cincinnati and
they said shock of shocks. There was one Christmas where
employees actually got a Christmas present of candy from oldermarg
shot in Cincinnati, and then they it was who was
the nineteen ninety three And they open it up and
there's a game card that you can play and it
says win a trip to the nineteen ninety one Grammys.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Oh wow, hey, Steve, if you could win a trip
to go back in time, wouldn't you want that? I
would want that. I don't know that I would pick
the ninety one Grammys.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
But still nice about eating the candy that is being
offered me as a present that is at least two
years old.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
But I go back. I could watch the Twins win
the World Series again over the Braves. I could watch them,
you know, Redskins win the Super Bowl and make a
lot of money.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
You mentioned the Twins.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
We did get a call about excitement for the Timberwolves
in Minnesota's the NBA Playoffs are about to start for them.
That was the last call on the show, right before us,
And it just reminds us that our boss every postseason
he gives a very very informative and updated tweet about
how the Twin Cities have done in their professional sports,

(09:55):
because I don't believe they've done since the Twins in
nineteen ninety one. I love those teams.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yeah, no, Scott Shapiro definitely goes goes, you know, goes
to the goes to the wall for the Minnesota teams
in the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
I don't think people really know what's been going on
in seriously in pro sport, if you had to guess, Okay,
when's the time the last time any of those teams won.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
The title that long? Are you kidding? Yeah? Yeah, oh yeah,
no kidding.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Uh, because you remember you had the uh the they
almost went to the Super Bowl, Gary Anderson missed the
field goal and the Champions Title game, right, that was
Randy Moss's big chance. And then the t Wolves and
four uh that was their best team ever, right, that
was Garnett and Hugliata. And they won like they won
like eighty out of eighty two games in the regular season,
like that had an insanely good regular season. Was they

(10:42):
won like they won like sixty games, and it was
a great season for them, and they fell short. So yeah,
it's you know, it's a it's been a little bit
a minute.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
But they actually finally made well I was going to
say made the conference final. They actually won a playoff
series finally in O four and then got beat by
the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Yeah, and this year they had Sam Darnold. It turned
out to be so good, and then we're going to
keep him for the rest of Oh no, no, we're
gonna let him go.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Yeah, we saw the last two games the Timberwolves. By
the way, since that four postseason with Garnett where they
actually made the run for the first time in franchise history,
they hadn't won a single playoff series since then until
last year when they made the Conference finals at Los So.
In all of their years of existence as a team,

(11:27):
those are literally the only two runs out of the
first round for the Timberwolves. And they became a franchise
in eighty nine.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Jason Smith, Steve Disaga, Fox Sports Radio the Magic Game
against the Hawks. In the books, the Magic move on
into the playoffs. There will be the seventh seed in
the East one twenty to ninety five, just about to
have the tip for Golden State and Memphis. We'll see
when John Morant does his first finger gun celebration. Maybe
it's right off the opening tip. But speaking of the

(11:56):
playing right, we had a great story today because MAVs
GA Nico Harrison, who has been the scourge of the
NBA since the Luka Donciche.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
Trade and particularly Dallas, Yes, spoke to.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Reporters for only the second time since the trade was made.
Like he spoke the day after, he made some jokes
that didn't go over well. He's the most hated man
in Dallas, and they're actually gonna put a statue of
him up outside of Crypto, right next to the Magic
Johnson statue.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
Oh, I thought you were gonna say, they're gonna put
one up in Dallas just so they can.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Tear it down, just so they could throw stuff at it.
Yet bring your tomatoes downtown, right outside the arena. So
he gives a press conference today, but he has a
meeting with the Dallas media because look, they're in the
playing round. They play tomorrow night. The meeting has no
cameras or recording devices, in which he talked about the

(12:46):
trade and said he has no regrets over it, and
you're excited about the passion of the fans, but no
regrets over the Luca Dontet trade. Right now, there's a
lot to unpack your But first thing is this, I
understand that you're a little gun shy about getting in
front of cameras when you get that kind of age.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
This should be his first regret.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
I get it. Uh, the first regret should be, dude,
what do you what? Are you afraid that the media
is gonna do? Quote you warmly and accurately? No, no, no, no, no,
no recording devices, no cameras. I'm just gonna talk to
the media. But the whole thing is, so they care
what do you talk? So you want to be misquoted,
Like that's the thing. You want to be misquoted because
if you think that though, I'm gonna they're gonna not

(13:25):
be able to cut my words into something else, Like
they're gonna unfairly edit him into a section on Sportsnight
where the reporter says, and here's what Nico Harrison had
to say today. I would do it again a million times.
The fans suck like they're gonna edit that together. No,
all you do by not being recorded is make it
easier to misquote you. I don't understand. I want to

(13:47):
make sure I've quote. No, I don't want to don't
want to talk about it. I mean, come on, man,
that that is that that's like covering it and weak.
That's like getting off junior high, putting it all. I mean, dude,
grow up, man, I mean, grow up. I'm gonna defend
the later in the show, but dude, grow up. Man.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
Is this a meeting for the media. Is that what
you're saying? Because not every part of the media is
print media. You're aware of that, right. I was for
many years as a radio person at one press conference
after another, not with a television camera and not with
my notebook like a columnist. I was a radio guy
with a microphone. Are you telling me this is a

(14:24):
meeting with the media but it can't be recorded? What
are you talking about.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
It's not in your living room.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
This is your official duties. By talking to the media,
you are talking to the fans.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
I really this is I mean again, and I'm gonna
defend them later on in the show. I'm gonna defend them.
But now, but I can't defend this, Like, dude, come on, man,
you're talking. What are you afraid the media is gonna do?
Did the media misconstrue the Luca trade? Like did that happen? Like?
Did Luca trade get out and suddenly they misreported it? Hey,
look at this trade. No, it's not all what it was.
We got Anthony Davis in the trade. Now we're leaving

(14:57):
that bart out. We're just saying that you got Luka Dancic. No,
but then we got Anthony Davis. He's a great player. No,
not like what come on, man, grow up like being
a like, be an adult when this, when this comes
up to it. Yeah, the media is here, they'll record
what you say. That's kind of how it goes. Man.
But suddenly, oh no, no, no, no, I want to
control the narrative, like you're afraid the evil media is
to lay something to you.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
What is it that the horse has left the barn?
I think that's the expression. He's got a Dallas team
that's sub five hundred.

Speaker 4 (15:24):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
Most trades, you're trying to look down the road. Not all,
but most I and I even agree with, Okay, defense,
great defense, wins championships, Fine, all of that, but let's
let's be honest. Let's live in the present, shall we.
What you have currently can't be hidden. You're a team
that's probably gonna be eliminated tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Right.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Wouldn't you guess that a healthy Sacramento is better than
a healthy Dallas and it looks like, you know, Davis
is playing and he's back healthy. And even though wasn't
it appropriate that he got his very first game. I'm
sorry to laugh, but I mean, you couldn't have than
that any better. So yeah, thirty nine and forty three
is the Dallas record.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Noah, Nico ge get out of high school, man, get
out of high school, Join the join the big boys.
Understand that when you make a trick, you gotta own it, right,
you just own it. No, no, no, no, there.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
We're still recording this fire Nico Chance Sunday in the
season finale in Dallas.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
And by the way, before.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
There's gonna be fire Nico Chance the first week of
the Cowboys seasons. They're gonna be yelling at at the stadium.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
That's right, because we know Jerry's not going to fire himself.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Dallas is good. Dallas is gonna lose that game thirty
eight seven, and they're gonna talk to Jerry after. He's
gonna say, not a great week. But boy, how about
Nico trading Luca. Boy, that's trade I'd worked out. He'll
take questions on that, sure, I'll take questions. He'll always
be in town as a punching bag. Before we break,
I must mentioned in the West playing opener at Golden

(16:48):
State Memphis out to an eleven to two lead on
the Warriors. I haven't seen any finger gestures, but a
nice start for the visitors. No, I have not yet,
but again not exactly the start the Warriors had in mind.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
But it is.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
Not exactly what the Warriors had in mind. Jason Smith,

That's next Thursday, eight pm Eastern, throughout the first round

(19:39):
I'm kind of waiting. I assume at some point we
mentioned our boss Scott Shapiro in the last few minutes.
I gotta assume at some point he's gonna call me
and go, hey, So, if you cross paths with Joe
Douglas next week, like when he's leaving the studio and
you're just wanted to bought anything, you're planning on saying anything.

(20:00):
Just want to know what kind of where your head's
at right now, mister Jets fan.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
There's no history there. You're gonna ask what Walt Michaels
has been up to? Or are you gonna go that
far back?

Speaker 1 (20:11):
Or what if? I just don't say anything? But I
wear a throwback Aaron Glenn Jersey in and I just
do I just walk into the studio. Man, You do
see now that.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
That's you're going in a positive tack that I really
wasn't expecting from you.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Oh no, no, no, no, what about this? What about this?
What about this? What if I got a throwback Keyshawn
Johnson Jersey? Right? So I came in wearing the jersey
it said Johnson on it, and I had like a
foam brick, and I I pretended to throw the brick
at him, Brick Johnson. I was Brick Johnson, and I
was making all the decision. I'm Brick Johnson. What if
I did that?

Speaker 3 (20:46):
If you as soon as you said throwing a foam brick,
I am reminded of our friend Vic the brick. That's
oh sure, That's how he got the name. He was
a local TV anchor and if he didn't like something
in sports, he would throw the brick at the camera.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
Oh yeah, yeah, now I'd be I'd be Jason the brick.
Let me do it to Joe Douglas. He brought to
brick Johnson in. He pricked Johnsonham. He breaks Johnsonham. Uh
so again a big deal next Thursday Night, of course,
Jay Glazer, Joe Douglas little just over.

Speaker 4 (21:10):
A week away.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
I can't wait and look and you think we didn't,
But like I said last week, and we're going to
get to this later on in the show. I told
you it is going to be every day a Shador
Sanders story, and we are on every day at Shador
Sanders Story day seven. I told you every day it
was gonna be Saner. Yes, every day shoud door sand
You think he's.

Speaker 3 (21:28):
Playing for New York already.

Speaker 1 (21:34):
But the big story today out of Colorado is is
not really about you do. I mean, there's a big story.
But Travis Hunter uh kind of opened some eyes today
with a big statement that starting to make its way.
He was on a podcast where he was asked, Hey,
how do you feel about playing one side of the
ball over the other because obviously, look, Heisman Trophy. Winter

(21:55):
coming in could be the the show. Heo Tani of
the NFELL playing both ways, like everybody can't wait to
see him play. And he said, Hey, if there's any
team out there, the team I would rather retire than
not play both sides of the football. Like, if you're thinking,
if you want to play me on one side of
the football not the other, I may as well retire. Whoa,
whoa wait? What wait? What You're retired? Whoa wait? First

(22:18):
of all, that would only happen if the Jets got him,
Like I can see the Jets getting him. And then
there's a big statement and the Jets come out and say,
Darren moochie and here comes to Aaron Glenn. We're decided
he's going to be a shut down corner for us.
What about offense? Yeah, we don't know so much. Joey
have Garrett Wilson got to get him the football. We
got some guys. And then the next day he announces
his retirement from the NFL Like that would only happen

(22:39):
if the Jets didn't.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
Yeah, and that's why people want to retire after their Jets.
Not for this reason, not for playing both sides of
the ball.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Oh yeah yeah, people get to the Jets. Guy, I've
had it. I can't believe Aaron Rodgers wants to play.
He hadn't had enough the last two years with the Jets.
Who wants to keep going? Gotta hear going?

Speaker 4 (22:55):
Some people choose to be there.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
Yeah see, but see that's the things. See, that's the
best thing that's happened to the Jets years as Aaron
Glenn wanting to be here, Like I wanted this job.
I wanted to be a He played with the Jets.
He was a star here, was such a great player
for so long. I loved Aaron Glenn. He wanted to
come back. It's so great, but I wanted to if
he came in here, said Joe Douglas. I would say, dude, why.

Speaker 3 (23:16):
This is this is actually a serious point that you
got a guy that's been in New York already and.

Speaker 1 (23:21):
He wanted to come like he could have gone other places.
I'd say, what, dude, why?

Speaker 3 (23:25):
Yes, because it's give me the why. I mean, who
were in the hot candidates both coordinators in Detroit last year. Oh,
he's going to be a head coach. He's going to
be a head coach. This is the NFC's whole story
was that team until until maybe the last two weeks.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
I mean, it's amazing we got we somehow got Aaron Clinton.

Speaker 3 (23:41):
And then of course, as we referenced earlier, Minnesota kind
of took over as far as stories go in a
negative way at the end of the season.

Speaker 1 (23:49):
But as far as Travis Hunald, like, what is this
all about? Right, because clearly he's not going to retire.
I mean maybe if the Raiders pick him, but he's
clearly not going to retire. Why is this out there.
I'll tell you exactly what this is about. There's no
team that doesn't want him to play both sides of
the football, right you would think there's no team everybody
want Yeah, okay, maybe he'll be We're thinking he'll be

(24:10):
a little more dominant on one side of the ball
or the other. Maybe he'll play more defensive back than
wide receiver, because really, you're gonna run him out there
on plays where you're not gonna throw the football. You're
not you know, he'll be out there on passing down
So I understand it. But everybody wants to play both
sides of the ball. However, the fact he said this,
I would almost guarantee you there is one team near

(24:33):
the top of the draft that has let it be known,
either through him or back channels, that hey, we really
see you as a defensive back and maybe a little
bit of offense, but we really see we think you
have untapped potential. We love you. We think you're gonna
be the next Rod Woodson in the NFL. We think that,

(24:53):
and he wants to make sure that everybody knows, don't
take me if you're not gonna put me on both
sides of the football right now. I think the other
part of there's probably an added bonus of him making
sure teams know I want a big role on both
sides right away, like I think. But I think that's
the ancillary point, because there's no way he says this
unless he knows there's a team up near the top
that maybe that is flirting with or is given him

(25:15):
enough pause to think, Hey, if we get you, it's
not gonna be a lot of offense for you. WHOA,
what do you mean that? A lot of whoo whoahoa?
Hang on? He got hang on. So this is him
just kind of throwing the gauntlet down, saying, yo, I'm
playing both sides of the football. I'm gonna play it
a lot, and that's what I do. And and anybody
else that thinks I'm gonna come in, you need to
to sort of, you know, slide me in a little bit. No, No,

(25:37):
I'm ready to jump in. I played both sides of
the ball my whole life. I've done it in college
at an extremely high level in D one. I'm ready
to do it in the NFL. And you know what,
whoever drafts him, that's exactly what they should do. Put
him out, let him play both sides of the football.
This is why you got him. Maybe he gets a
he hasn't gotten hurt yet, right, hasn't got hurt yet.
And this is why you're drafting Travis Hunter because he's

(25:59):
a unicorn, cause he show Heyotani. The Dodgers didn't draft
show Heyotani so he would never pitch for him again.
They thought, okay, it's fine, he's gonna hit fifty home
runs a year, he's the best offensive player in the game,
and evention in the year or two, he'll pitch for us,
and look out, great, that's gonna be eight years, he'll
pitch for us and play the field. It's gonna be fantastic. Like,
this is why you're drafting Travis Hunter. I say, I say,

(26:20):
load up whatever you need, whatever, eating program, whatever it is,
because you're gonna get all the work you want. You're
gonna play offense nearly full time, you're gonna play defense
full time. Let's do it. Let's see how it goes,
and then you can adjust and if okay, maybe you
need to dial it back a little bit. And he
would probably understand, Hey, I'm not as sharp as I
need to be. I need more reps here in practice,
whatever it is. But you're raft that's why you're drafting

(26:42):
the guy you're drafting to be this kind of superstar.
I would tell him right away, whatever team meeting, I
would say, hey, dude, just want you know, man, you're
gonna be out there first team offense and defense. And
until you tell me you need to come out, or
you show me that you need to come out, you're
out there. This is why we're getting you. I mean,
I mean really, I mean.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Use the phrase eat up also, because that's kind of
my thought going into the draft in the first place.
With Travis Hunter, I absolutely because, as you say, we
saw it at an elite level in college. I absolutely
believe he could do this. But if you're drafting this
high and he seems to be a top five pick
for next week, you need the guy to have a career.

(27:20):
You need seven or eight years. You need a second
contract at minimum out of this guy. And I don't
see him at what six one eighty. He's not six
three two ten. You know there are receivers like that.
He's not one of those. And so if you're gonna
grind him down, not only just as an NFL receiver
that's possible on that side of the ball, but to
have potentially that many snaps in an NFL game and

(27:43):
therefore that many hits in an NFL game, I don't
see him seven.

Speaker 4 (27:47):
Eight years on the team that drafts him. If that's the.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
Case, Yeah, Bob, But but this guy has proven over
the course of his career to be someone unlike anyone
we've seen. Right. He's he's still going strong at the
end of at the end of games for Colorado, right Like,
he's still having games where I'm catching ten twelve passes
a game.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
Now, I want to see March against him you know
that size, not just the talent, that size bullying him
the Michael Irvin types.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
Yeah, but I think it's it's easier, you know, it's
it's it's good you say that, because that's kind. That's
why I like this approach for Travis Hunter more than
the other way, because if you if you tell, if
you try to do it, hey, we're gonna do it small,
We're gonna work you in and we're eventually go he's
gonna chomp at the bit and it's gonna be a
daily thing. When is he gonna play more offense? Didn't
you draft from the playoffense where it's much easier to say, hey, uh,

(28:38):
you're gonna do both. And then when you see if
we see that, okay, clearly your reps here, you are
exhausted on that on that play, and you find this
out in training camp, right, You'll find this out in camp,
in the in the in the in the preseason games,
in the joint practices when he when he practices like
you'll see it. And the beginning of the season, Hey,
you know what, dude, your sucking wind here? That was

(28:59):
that was you had nothing to offer us in the
third quarter when you played wide receiver. So now we
got to dial it back, and then he's got to understand, okay,
I need to dial it back. And it's much easier
to do it that way because if he comes out
right out of the gate, hey okay, great, all right, great,
you're awesome. But if he comes out and says, hey,
maybe we done okay, so then you dial it back
a bit and you work him back in that way.

(29:20):
But everybody then is on the same page, and there's
no frustration, there's no Hey, you lied to me and
my agent. You said this was going to happen. You
said I would play here. I'm not here. Why am
I not the number two option on offense? How come
I'm not doing this? It's a much easier thing to
go from your playing a lot until you show me
you can't. That's much easier. Then don't worry, we'll work

(29:41):
you in. We'll get you there at some We got
to protect you as an asset. No, the guy can
do it this way. Put him on the field. Let
him do it.

Speaker 3 (29:46):
And so are you thinking of when you say maybe
he's scaring some team near the top, Are you thinking
of a team of the Giants or whomever that might
have a top draft pick and have a chance at
him next week.

Speaker 1 (29:59):
Apparently it's some I mean I I but I can't believe. Well,
probably not the Titans, because they're gonna go quarterback with
cam Ward. I gotta think after what the Browns and
the Giants have done a quarterback in the last couple
of weeks, in the way both of their owners and
gms have talked about, we don't need to rush a quarterback,
we don't need to force a quarterback. That Cleveland's not

(30:19):
taking a quarterback at two and the Giants aren't taking
a quarterback at three. Now, if that happens, the Browns
are gonna take Travis Hunter. I mean, if that happens
and they're really not to that's the guy to take.
Abdul Carter is terrific. But this is a guy that's
gonna come in and he's gonna be the number one
superstar on the team. You have a superstar. You got it,
You have a super nova. I'd ask any team in
the NFL how hard is to get a super duperstar.

(30:41):
This guy's walking in off the field for you. You're gonna
sell jerseys, You're gonna sell more season tickets, there's gonna
be interest level and let me see him play dB.
Let me see him play wide receiver. Social media is
gonna be all about him on a Sunday like he's
gonna raise your level.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
Do you remember how big Josh Gordon was with Cleveland?
It was brief, but that's what you're talking about. It
can blow up.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
Yeah. I mean if if you're not going to take
a quarterback, right, if you if you're really not going
to do it, then Travis Hunter has to go number two.
I mean he's got to be the guy there at
two for the Browns and the Giants will sit there
at three and go, oh now we're stuck. Man, really
didn't want to take Shador got to do? Hey, anybody
want to trade up? Anybone want to trade up? Anybody
want to trade up anyway? Anybody? Anybody?

Speaker 4 (31:20):
What do we have to give you to trade down? Anybody?

Speaker 1 (31:24):
What if we give you Daniel Jones and Saquon Bark
mister Shane, you don't have those players anymore? Oh right?

Speaker 4 (31:32):
Can we get them back and then trade him?

Speaker 1 (31:34):
I'll call you back. Let me go, me call you back.
Uh So I'm telling you, man, I be Travis Hunter.
I put him out there and just let him go.
That's the best strategy.

Speaker 3 (31:43):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (31:43):
Speaking of the best strategy, maybe the best strategy for
the Golden State Warriors was to get down early, because
I don't think the Memphis Grizzlies have scored since Steve
Disager mentioned the score a few minutes ago. He's got
this game and more with what's trending in the wide
world of sports.

Speaker 3 (31:57):
In fact, it was eleven to two early Memphis in
the lead at Golden State in this playing game in
the West. After that a run of twenty nine to
seven for the Warriors to take the lead.

Speaker 4 (32:08):
We can update.

Speaker 3 (32:08):
They've just ended the first period in San Francisco. Warriors
up thirty one twenty five on Memphis Grizzly shooting as
a team down to thirty eight percent from the floor,
over fifty percent shooting as a team for the Warriors
in the first quarter, led by Jimmy Butler who has
ten points so far. Atlanta lost, but they're not out yet.
Remember in this convoluted play in tournament, which doesn't count

(32:33):
as the postseason. Remember these these stats they go into
the nether world. They actually don't count for anything. I
mean that literally. They don't go. There's not a page
for there's forget it. Atlanta loses tonight and they're still
not out of the postseason.

Speaker 4 (32:50):
Oh, actually, this isn't the okay.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
Orlando beats Atlanta one, twenty to ninety five despite twenty
eight points from Trey Young. Orlando advances by go going
to Boston as the seventh seed. That best of seven
first rounder starts this weekend. We know that we have
Wednesday playing games, including Miami at Chicago.

Speaker 4 (33:10):
And then we have Friday.

Speaker 3 (33:11):
I'll call it last chance games coming up because the
loser of Tuesdays will play the winner of Wednesday's nine
to ten matchups, and there you have your matchups for
Friday to see who eventually gets the eighth seed starting
this weekend.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
So you're saying this is more like a loser leave
town match is what we're having on Friday.

Speaker 3 (33:31):
Well, see, I was hoping the Hawks would leave town
and they're just going to another.

Speaker 4 (33:35):
Town, so really they're not over NHL.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
We got ten games tonight, Tampa Bay five to one
over Florida, Washington won three to one at the Islanders,
and Toronto was a four to nothing winner at Buffalo.
The NHL regular season ends this Thursday. As for the
Major League Baseball almost everything is a final at this point.
At Texas, the Rangers are about to close out a win.
It looks like they're up going to the Yeah, they

(34:04):
just closed it out. Excuse me, that was the third out.
That is a four to ninh thing final now over
the angel So we just had the two late games
on the board. Bottom of the four, scoreless at San
Diego Padres hosting the Cubs. The Padres are eleven and
zero at home. Rockies at Dodgers.

Speaker 1 (34:18):
Eventually they play on the road, right, Eventually they're gonna
have road games.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
Right, No, I don't think they play Oh okay, In fact,
I don't think they're going to play the Giants or
the Dodgers either, apparently at any.

Speaker 1 (34:28):
Play on the schedule. One hundred and fifty five at
pet Goo and seven at neutral sites.

Speaker 3 (34:32):
Yeah, I think the Rockies are going to revisit three
times first before they ever see The Rockies are scoreless
at Dodger Stadium. Bottom of the second. I mentioned Colorado
because God bless them, they're not just three and thirteen overall,
They're already ten and a half games out in the Division.
It's April fifteenth, and they're ten and a half games out.

Speaker 4 (34:52):
My goodness, Minnesota beat the Mets.

Speaker 1 (34:54):
I don't think the White Sox were that far out
of first place at this point last year.

Speaker 4 (34:58):
We'll get to them.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
Minnesota beat the Mets three, Milwaukee shut out Detroit five
nothing just one hit for the Tigers, and in Harmon's honor,
the White Sox, who are at home against the A's
Athletics twelve White Sox three so in my let me
update carry the one. It's four and twelve the record
for the Chicago White Sox.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
Back to you like you, Steve, though the Jason Smith
Show is Steve Desager in for Mike Harmon coming up next.

this early in the season, but there is a big

We'll have more on that game coming up in a
few minutes. But I gotta say this, Steve, because you know,
I see the beginning of the season and this becoming
a huge controversy, and I just go, can't the Mets
have nice things for a day? Right? Can't we have

(38:05):
nice things?

Speaker 3 (38:06):
Immediately before you'd spoken even half a sentence, when it
started like that, I said, I don't care what the
sport is.

Speaker 4 (38:12):
He's talking about New York team.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
We can't do nice things for a day. Mets are
in first place yesterday lose the night to the Twins
six to three. But it's been a big start for
the Mets. And of course Juan Soto, who.

Speaker 4 (38:25):
Hasn't had a big start.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
No, he's had an okay start. Pete Alonzo's had the
big start, which is what makes this all the more stupid.
Did an interview in which he talked about his early
season difficulty. He's not playing terribly this year. He's just
not you know, one soda. But we did another home
run tonight, second night Row. With the home run, he
said that it's a little bit different. He's being pitched
differently this year because Aaron Judge is not hitting behind him.

(38:48):
Remember that was a big thing when he was going
to sign with the Mets. He wanted to know who's
going to hit behind me, and he said, Pete Alonzo
is the guy. Okay, so number one. When I saw
this statement, the first thing I said is okay, wow.
I know that all MLB players are about their numbers,
but clearly Wan Soda is about his numbers. I mean,
you walk in, you want seven hundred and fifty million dollars,

(39:10):
and then you say, hey, I need a really good
guy hitting behind me. Dude, you want seven undred fifty
million dollars. That puts you wherever the hell I want
to in the lineup.

Speaker 4 (39:17):
You should be manning twice.

Speaker 1 (39:19):
I'm gonna hit you second and fourth and I'm gonna
put a mustache on you. You're gonna hit eight. Okay,
I mean you really, you really want to tell me
you need a really good guy hitting behind you? Like
this is ridiculous. Yes, you see now he's about his numbers.
But it's not that big a deal because all MLB
is about their numbers, right. They know this is how
I get big contracts, It's how I stay in the game.
It's great to be a glue player that a that

(39:41):
a manager likes, but they know I gotta hit certain things.
My batting average has to be good, my ops, whatever
it is. So everybody's about their stats. But here's one soda.
While the Mets are in first place, and he already
feels the need to defend himself and the start he
has had by saying, I need somebody good hitting behind me.
The first thing I want to say is, dude, you
got to hitting behind you. Who is leading majors in

(40:02):
RBI and third in ops? Okay, you got a guy
who is doing that. So what do you mean I'm
being pitched differently? Again, peter A Lonzo was being pitched. However,
peter A Lonzo's gotten pitched. He's seen enough to lead
the league in RBIs and to have the third highest
OPS in the game. So this doesn't hold water right.
I would say this because this is where I think
it's coming from. I tell Juan Soto, look, dude, you

(40:24):
need my pr advice on how to deal with the
media now, because yes, you've been a big star for
a while you played for the Yankees, but this is different.
It is different for you now because of the contract
you have. You are front page news every day. You're
in the limelight. You got a lot of money. You
wanted this. Handle it. Don't say stupid stuff. Handle it.

(40:45):
Don't worry about your numbers. Handle being a super duper
star in the sport with the biggest contract.

Speaker 3 (40:50):
That's what I would tell him, And that's pretty good advice, because,
as you mentioned, it is an insult to your current
teammate to talk like this now when he's having this
this much of a hot start and hotter than you.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
I really, I'm like, can we can we please get past?
Can this become a short thing? Can this become just
a big headline for a couple of possible twan so
own it, Suck it up, be a leader, handle it.
Just handle it. Coming up next a guy that's forgetting
all kinds of criticism in the last few months, I'm
gonna tell you to back off them. Why that's next,
