Well.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
The next half hour, so a big power half hours.
We take a look at what we've seen in the
NBA playoffs so far. What we saw this week, we
saw a d nearly I don't want to say win
the game, but at least keep the Mavericks in it
all by himself. Playoffs begin tomorrow. Could there be upsets coming?
In studio now with Steve Disager and I is NBA
(01:12):
insider Mark Medina stop it and saying I'll come in
and hang out and talk to you guys. All right, yeah,
of course.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Look, I can't hang out with j J Reddick anymore,
so I gotta do it. You, I gotta do the
next best thing and hanging out with his arts and amosol.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
Hanging out with Jason will mean you're never hanging out
with JJ Reddick.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. Like whatever party is going on,
you're off that list. Do you? Why did I Why
did I not get invited to this to the severance
finale party? Friends with Jason? That's not happening. He still
hates me though, he still hates me without a doubt.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Okay, I think he is using you as motivation for
all his prep.
Speaker 6 (01:46):
Tomorrow. So if he wins, take ninety percent of the credit.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Okay, well, well I'll take all the credit. I mean really,
because I don't know without my credit whatever I said
about the Lakers ten percent Lebron Oh yeah, okay, okay,
Luca Lebron a little bit for all reeves. But like
I mean, you know, without what whatever my criticism that
spurred the team to make that Luca trade. My name name, yes, yeah, yeah,
I mean he did. I mean really he called me
(02:10):
out in the prescot and everybody laughed. I want to
find out if you laughed, Mark, but I know you
did you laugh.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
I did wonder those those numbers that at the end
your handle, yeah, yeah, were those like your ATM no.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Number?
Speaker 2 (02:27):
No.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
I think that was his way of saying, Jade's what
one six sided care? What a random person?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
So you did your name checking me on the show?
Your name checking me? There, that's how it goes. Okay,
So no, And here's the thing. It would be the
second ring that I helped the Los Angeles team get
the first because the first ring, Eric Dickerson, remember big
running back with the with the Rams, and then he
got into it. He became an x ex communicado from
(02:55):
the Rams. When he got into with Jeff Fisher, he
was kind of out of the family. He was kind
of out of the fly, know, doing stuff here in
in Los Angeles on the radio, and he was a
presence on the sideline of games. And apparently Jeff Fisher
didn't like what Eric Dickerson would say about the Rams
when he would do media appearances, and so he was
(03:16):
banned from the sidelines. We're like, oh my god, do
you get banned? Because he'd be the sidelines on the rim.
They wouldn't let him have sidelines anymore. So we're like, okay,
let's get Eric Dickerson on the show to talk about this, right,
So he comes on, and I remember this like it was.
It was one of the biggest nights of you we've
we ever had on the show because now we affected
the NFL, and and we had him on, and I
vividly remember him saying to me, I say, what happened
(03:37):
with you and Jeff Fisher? And he goes, is this
a show where I could just say anything? And I
look at Harmon and I look at Justin and I
look at Alex and I just go yeah, and I'm
like get ready, And he goes okay, and he tells
a story about it. They wouldn't get him tickets to Disneyland.
Jeff Fisher banned me from the sidelines. He told me
I can't be on the sideline, And this story just
(03:59):
absolutely bl up. Suddenly Jeff Fisher was the bad guy,
and how do you do that to Eric Dickerson. All
the fans took Dickerson's side, Five days later, Jeff Fisher
was fired, Sean McVay was hired. A couple of years later,
the Rams won the Super Bowl. Well, I didn't even
get a ring. Actually, they would get a ring.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
They went from the worst offense to the best offense
in one year once they changed from Fisher to this current.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
I got them, Sean McVay. I got them Sean McVay.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
So if I'm following the logic, then I helped the
Rams to a title. You help them get the Luka
Doncic trade and Rob Polenkas extension.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Yes, exactly, So Polenka owes me as well. This would
be the Lakers a ring to the Dodgers don't need
any help, So I mean, whatever, I got to work
on the Kings, you know, or USC football.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
I mean, if you're positive on Polinka, does that make
you automatically negative with Magic?
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Uh? Well, we do play the Magic Johnson Twitter game,
and that's kind of I don't think they're phumorous purposes.
I don't think he's a fan of that, but the
Magic John's a Twitter game all right.
Speaker 7 (04:55):
Now.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Before we get int tonight, you said I have something
to bring you that's even more incendiary than jj Redick
still hates you.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Well, it's not ready to do, but I think it'll
get a reaction because I feel like there's times when
I'm doing appearances with you that you think I'm trolling you.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
And okay, so I am, okay sure.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
I had said earlier in the season that I did
a magazine piece for Lindy's Magazine about how great Jalen
Brunson is, and I think that you rolled your eyes.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
Well, we have a copy here.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
You can have Lindy's.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
Can look at what the article is and tell me.
Tell me what it says. Just moll it over.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
He's not on the cover on the clip it over.
So look at the four page spread the Brunson burner.
Look what the Knicks found by Mark Medina and Jason Smith.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
And how about this line in a second paragraph, The
Knicks finally have a star player that can lead them
to their third NBA championship. His name is Jalen Brunson. Wow,
with an asterisk on the end. Hang on asterisk, let
me go to the end of the article. Not really true,
just for clicks. Well, how about that the asterisk in
real time is that I wrote this as a preview.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Guy do you fast forward to the end of the season.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
I didn't know how dominant the Cleveland Cavaliers would be
the Boston Solex would be. So I no longer believe
what I wrote.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
So I brought this to you. We're not going to
sell this one anymore. So just just just go ahead,
you know that.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Uh so, So in case you missy, here's the you
know listen, we got the rams of ring. Here's the
JJ Reddick audio that we reference when we talk about them.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
There was a notion after the Luca trade that.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Is coming from something on Twitter, I'm not going.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
To know at it was coming from from real people,
from your general manager among them, which was like this
was about the next time Jason.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Smith one night, hold on me. I'm looking up for it.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
I just want to make sure. And he says, I'm
not going to listen. He goes on to say I'm
not going to listen to what Jason says, and everybody laughs.
I'm like, okay, now I got to get back. I'm like,
uh Steve Bushmi and uh Billy Madison, people to kill
people to get it. Even with everybody that laughed in
that in that in that room, and that was Dan
Wiki friend of the show that was.
Speaker 6 (06:57):
I didn't ask the question.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
I didn't.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
I did laugh though. Okay, hang on, Mark Medeena, you're
sitting next to me right here. Hey, here, try some
of this uh uh special soup that my wife made. Here.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
Try this, just try it. Just take as much as
you want, save it for after the show. Okay, this
was going to be four segments, now it's two.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Hey, I don't think Medeena is going to be with
us quite as long as you think he's gone. So
you know, or talk about the NBA. So Steve and
I were talking about this earlier tonight, looking for a
big winner from this week for the NBA playing round,
And I don't know there's anybody bigger than won this
week than Tyler Hero. He's proven that I can be
a one, I can be a franchise player. The heat
(07:39):
trying to move on. He had a great upward trajectory
of his career. Is only twenty five. He went from
six Man of the Year, first time All Star at
thirty tonight, the Big Three in overtime. They're not gonna
go anywhere in the East this year, but obviously they're
a transition to repeat. I believe he culture. Come on,
culture will only get you so far. I believe in
the Cavaliers offense, which goes like eleven D. I think
(08:00):
Mark Price is gonna play some minutes in this round
and score. But now the Heat, this is who they
build around. This is their franchise player. They still have
another couple of years at a contract that's really good,
just over thirty million.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
Like Tyler Heroes proven. Okay, I'm a one. Now I'm
a franchise guy.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
And when the Heat, like, we don't know where we're
gonna be, what we're gonna do, we get rid of
Jimmy Butler and see they're in a pretty good place
right now with him.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Yeah, relatively speaking, I mean the Miami Heat. They're not
going to get to the NBA Finals as a playing team.
That only happens when Jimmy Butler's on the team.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Oh wow, you already saying Tyler hero is not good
enough of Tyler Hero is a really good, feel good story,
consolation prize development in a season otherwise marred by turbulence.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
And what's really fast about Tyler Hero is the Miami
Heat aren't surprised at all with how much he's morphed
into a complete player. When you look at his numbers,
it's career highs across the board, with his shooting, his scoring,
his passing. They just that it's a cliche. But he
puts in the work, but it's very purposeful. He was no,
(09:06):
he was never content with being seen as oh, he's
a nice specialist, he'll be cool in a three point contest.
He really wanted to develop into a complete player.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
And you know, I think that he is a star
in the making.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
Steve just wants to get a buckethead like like Tyr Herohead. No. Actually,
you know, he's not shooting anymore than he used to write.
He's just scoring more. He's just better than he was
a few years ago.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Yeah, I mean he's a great three point shooter, he
attacks the rim. He's a great mid range cheer as well.
I mean, he is a complete player. And when you
combine that with bam Adebayo, who is mister versatile as
far as his ability to play all five positions both
sides of the court, that's a great combination.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
Now, again, when you're looking at the.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
All time duos right now in the NBA, it's not
like Tyler Hero and Adobio stack up.
Speaker 6 (09:55):
You know, Donovan Mitchell.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
It's a shooter that's alt NBA jam T shirt. Yeah,
that's good.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
But you know, look, the Miami Heat don't know how
to tank. They don't know how to rebuild. No, and
this is, you know, one of many examples of that.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
But I want to say, I do think Steve, I
think you're selling yourself short. You like the bucket hat,
like with phishing lures on it, Like I can see that,
Like I can see that from you, like on the weekend,
only if it's from the Gone Fishing on the TNT
post game, which by the way, should have pictures of
those guys in the next month or two because that
show is going to be Gone Fishing on TNT, the
(10:32):
contraction the Mavericks tonight before that ended, because they really
let me down.
Speaker 5 (10:36):
We're not going to get away without talking about the
Knicks because they were less than a month and a
half ago forty and twenty and they were anything but
special down the stretch of the season eleven and eleven.
Is that just because nobody was catching the top two
seeds in the East. He doesn't even see mister Nick
here sitting next to you doesn't even seem to be
positive about their first round chances, and certainly not Eastern
(10:57):
Conference Finals. I don't know what's going through his head now.
After all the Knicks garbage he has discussed over the years,
there's no talk going into this postseason for his Knicks.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Now wait, now, let me just say this, because let
me give you the sunny side of this. Oh, the
Knicks couldn't beat any of the top three teams in
the league, right over ten against the Celtics and the
Cavaliers and the thunder Right and all the low outs.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
Yeah, yeah, right, but so okay, that's fine. But here's
the thing. Take those three teams out. The Knicks are
the best team in the NBA. Right, they're fifty and twenty,
They're fifty two and twenty. Someone can just take out
the Celtics and and take and take those teams out.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
And the Knicks are waltz in their way to the
Rason Grizzlies win, right, magic win, gay eak.
Speaker 5 (11:39):
Win positive on the first round and beating Detroit.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Absolutely there, yeah, we're absolutely there. We're absolutely there. Again,
take those three teams out. The Knicks are the best
team in the NBA.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
But it's the question mark is is it just because
of the standings that we didn't see peak Knicks or
just because of that injury. Is is this the healthy
Knicks team that we're gonna have going in, Is that
the team that can do damage? Or we've seen what
we saw.
Speaker 6 (12:03):
I think we've seen what we saw.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
But yeah, those were two factors that prevented them from
crane a little bit of uh, you know, catching up
to them. But I think if none of those things happened,
their best case scenario was they would give either Cleveland
or Boston a competitive series, but nothing more than that
they would lose. Their opponent would praise them, Hey, you guys.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Really did a good job.
Speaker 8 (12:30):
I e.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
You had no shop. Thanks for getting us ray for
the finals. But the fact that there was a lot
of separation and Jalen Brunson got hurt really did damage.
Because Jalen Brunson, he's a special player, and that illustrates
why the next are struggling. But no doubt it's I
think it's still in news stands. It sells year round,
(12:51):
but also exposes that when he's out of the lineup,
they don't have alternatives, They don't have a go to closer.
They don't have that definitive point guard. Yes, Carl Anthony Towns,
he has been a great fit for the next but
he's a center, he's not a point guard.
Speaker 6 (13:08):
So it's good that obviously Jalen Brunson's back.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
I think the larger point that you asked, what about
the first round against the Detroit Pistons. Be clear who
the Pistons are for real. They have a great coach
of your candidate. They have a lot of good young guys.
Kate Cunningham is a star. But I think just like
the Knicks are to the Celtics and the Cavaliers, there's
too much separation. So I think the best case scenario
(13:31):
is six games, but most likely five games.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Nicks win magic win, no heat win and get magic.
Like half their guys are hurt. It doesn't matter, It
doesn't matter. Penny Hardaway is gonna have a big series.
Just watch Dennis Scott Shat's gonna.
Speaker 6 (13:46):
Come out of three tiers. Don't trust Nick Anderson.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
I say, you gotta explain to millennials who Nick Anderson
has got.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
NBA Finals.
Speaker 5 (14:03):
Actually, there's one thing that we've got to piggyback on
here because We talked earlier tonight about the positionless NBA
and yet specifically mentioned Towns as a center. And we've
seen the outside shooting that seemingly everybody, no matter how
tell you are, goes through in the NBA. Is positionless
a real thing in the NBA? Or is that just
(14:24):
you speak from the talk shows.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
No, it's a real thing as far as like floor
spacing and coaches interchanging players. I remember when Mike D'Antoni
was coaching the Lakers, and you know that brings up
a whole other saga, but you know he's a face
of small ball. In seven seconds or less, he made
a real key point on what this all is. It's
not small ball, it's skill ball. So you know, this
(14:49):
positionless basketball that we're talking about. Part of the reason
why is positionless as you're seeing both small and big
guys having a lot more versatility as far as what
they can do. It's no longer the point guard only
knows how to set up the offense. It's no longer
the big man knows how to dunk and you know,
get blocks.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
But still Sean Marion stays in the corner. Yeah, exactly,
he has a position and that's what it is exactly.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Fox Sports Radio, Jason Smith Steve Desager in for harmon

look at what we saw at what we're gonna see
this weekend as the first route of the playoffs get underway.

Luca had to say today about Nico Harrison and the
Mavericks him to use the word sad to describe a
lot of it. So much more mustless and radio right

Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon. Steve
de Seger in for Harmon Tonight in studio with us
this hour. NBA insider Mark Medina spend some time in
the last few minutes talking about the playin round. I've
had sex with him like fifty sixty times on camera.
You know, we want me to need to come back.
We you know, we want to make him come back.
(17:07):
We don't want him to go. I don't know film,
I don't know what the hell this is all about.
They played a drop saying I haven't sex with him
fifty sixty times on cast, saying what's going on?
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Yeah, Okay, okay, it's it's it's Friday and things get
a little well weird on Friday.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
Uh. In fact, that's not even Steve de Sager, it's
Mike Harmon. He's gonna unzip his head like in those
commercials and they'll be Barry bossed way so uh before
we get to the games.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Finally we heard from Luca Donsich earlier today, did an
interview with ESPN in advance of the series with the
Minnesota Timberwolves. Talked about his situation where he is now.
We've not heard a lot of Luca talking about the trade,
what happened. Uh, but he gave a big quote on
Nico Harrison and what he feels about the Dallas Mavericks
when he was asked, hey, how do you feel about
(17:54):
what went on? How do you feel about Nico saying
defense wins championships, which is why they went out to
get Anthony Davis. And here's what Lucas said.
Speaker 9 (18:03):
The general manager, Nico Harrison of the Dallas Mavericks. You
had this closed door, no cameras meeting with reporters. The
reporter said, you didn't believe that the team that went
to the finals last year with Luca as a centerpiece,
could contend and continue to contend for championships, And Nico
Harrison said, I'll say this again, defense wins championships. What
do you say to that it.
Speaker 8 (18:24):
Is said, and the way he's talking right now, I
never say anything bad about him, and I just want
to move on. The fans my ex teammates always keep
it hard. It's time for me to move on from that.
Speaker 9 (18:35):
Have you spoken to Nico Harrison since you left Dallas?
Have you spoken to him on the night that you
were traded?
Speaker 7 (18:41):
No?
Speaker 9 (18:42):
Was your intention to finish your career in Dallas?
Speaker 8 (18:44):
Of course, that's easy question.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
So there was Look, it's sad about what's being said
right now. Now you're around the Lakers, you cover them
all the time.
Speaker 5 (18:52):
And he's never hired an orchestra for his NBA Like
we heard in the background there.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Nico wouldn't even allow cameras in Luca's like we got
an orchestra. I'll let you put it on tape, and
you were recorded playing back whenever like you heard Luca,
it's said he said he wants to stay with the Lakers.
He's not talking a lot about the Mavericks. Does that
jibe with what you've seen since the trade.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
Yeah, I think what really stuck out to me during
Luka Doncish's introductory press conference as a Laker, the doing
emotions where he was no doubt excited to be with
the Lakers, and he has such fun respect for Kobe
Bryant and a lot of respect for Lebron James, and
also he sees a great opportunity to win a championship.
So those were exciting emotions, but you could also tell
(19:34):
then that he was sad. You know, he was addressing
all the criticism that Nico Harrison was paddling about his
conditioning and just the fact that this is a franchise
player that wasn't requesting a trade, is still in the
prime or not even in the prime of his career,
just the peak of his career, and is already a
generational star, and he gets dealt like he looked very forlorn.
So I'm not surprised to hear now that he felt
(19:56):
it's sad that Nico is saying all these things about him.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Yeah, and I feel like, you know, Steph and I
talked about this that Hey, look, both sides have kind
of been kind of been as classy as you can
be enduring it like Nico's Yes, he's the GM, but
you know, the entire organizations on board with this decision
to make a trade, the Addleson's, the Dumont's, like, it's
not like Nico makes a trade. And then you know,
Meer Maddison goes, hey, uh did you trade? Look at
(20:19):
doncic Oh, yeah, I meant to tell you that. Sorry
about that, Like, yeah, they didn't want to pay him
for what agree or disagree with the decision it was.
We don't want to pay him three hundred and fifty
million dollars in contra they've ever had. We're not as
beholden to the Dallas Maverick. We just bought the team.
It's not like we watched Luca, you know, from up
closed for the last five or six years. We don't
(20:41):
want to pay him. We're unsure about his conditioning. Probably,
I'm sure they were unhappy that, Hey, coming off the finals,
he comes back not in shape, he gets hurt. We
can't commit to this, make a deal, get the best
deal you can. Like that's really kind of what the
reality has been in For the most part, Dallas hasn't
said anything Luca hasn't said anything.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
But he said Patrick Jimon said a bunch of foot
in your mouth things. I mean, he's doubled down on
the condition. And then the other thing, Patrick Dumont is
he started listing different players that you know, epitomize what
he's looking for as far as commitment, and he went
down the list like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant. Okay, but
then he makes a huge pivot and mentioned Shaquille O'Neil
(21:21):
and you'll Shack is one of the most dominant.
Speaker 6 (21:23):
Centers in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
But to say that he represents peak conditioning, yeah, he's
the complete opposite. You may Laker fans may recall that
he put off getting toe surgery, you know, entering the
two thousand and two to three season, I believe, and
he was asked, hey, why didn't you get this in
the offseason? He said, I got hurt on company time,
so I'm going to heal on company time.
Speaker 1 (21:43):
So you guys want a great Shack story about something
like that, This is when you even think about Shack
staying in shape, You're ready, Yeah, here's a great story.
So this is in ninety nine. Okay, So I'm going back.
Speaker 9 (21:52):
You know.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
This is when right before the Lakers started.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
To win champions right before Phil Jackson, right exactly, this
is when they lost to the Spurs in the second round.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Kobe missed two free throws at the end of game one.
Tim Duncan hit a turnaround shot that one, and the
Spurs wound up sweeping the series and the Lake. But
the next year, the Lakers won the first of three
straight championships. So I'm at practice before game one and
all we're doing is watching everybody warm up. And you know,
Phil Jackson, I'm sorry, you know, no, no, no, it
(22:22):
was Kurt Rambis. Like they didn't like the cameras that
he can only do, like only have certain Sometimes the
Lakers like when you shot practice. Sometimes they didn't, but
we could still say and watch. So I'm watching and
the Lakers are stretching. They're all in a big circle,
and and Ron Harper is leading the stretches and he's
down there stretching their hamstrings and their calves, and he's
down on the ground with you know, the one foot
out with a hand on the on the foot, and
(22:44):
everybody's leaning down. Everybody's doing the stretch except Shack, who
was just standing up and just shaking his arms and
legs like I'm ready. I'm ready, I'm ready now, not
doing the stretches, just okay, this is what I'm doing.
I'm ready. I'm like, Wow, there we go. Okay, that
was checking. Wow.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
Well at least you didn't witness this.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
A lot of former Lakers I talked to, like when
he was going to get his statue on veiling a
few years ago, I asked for their favorite Shack story.
Wasn't their favorite, It's just most memorable. He would often
come into practice without any clothes on.
Speaker 6 (23:16):
And the reason and the reason is he was often.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
Show up so late that he would be at the
last second, you'd have time to change. And then not
only that, he would sometimes chase his teammates wow in
a birthday suit. Derek Fisher one time joke the reason
why I was able to run off the court so
quickly after making that infamous you know shot against the
spurred point four seconds because he was used to run.
Speaker 6 (23:37):
Away from Shaq in practice.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
It's like bab Ruth showing up. He used to chase
people with no clothing. Yeah, that's yeah, I don't know
that that would I know that would play now twenty
twenty five.
Speaker 5 (23:49):
I don't think that would believe we have union protections
for sir. Yes, since yes, can you imagine Lakers human resources?
Speaker 1 (23:57):
So Shaquille O'Neill changed him naked, and this has happened
many times.
Speaker 5 (24:04):
There's a class for that.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
Okay, all right, we would have to watch a bunch
of videos instructional.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
Get check in here, check you're gonna you're gonna watch these.
I'll see in about eight hours when they're done. All right,
So looking at this series now, obviously Lucas says he's
really he's fired up for what is in front of
the Lakers here, and clearly you know this is a
team peaking. You don't know what they can do in
the playoffs. Minnesota's a dangerous team. We saw far they
went last year. They seem to be getting back to
(24:32):
that point. Now. Could Team Wills have a chance to
pull this upset in the first round? Is this is
this closer series that people think, well, oh.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
They definitely have a chance anything. Edwards has continued to
get better. The feeling about Anthony Edwards dating back to
last season's playoffs, both success and failures, is he's trained
a lot better, so that he doesn't get exhausted in
deep postseason runs. He's also improved as a score because
of the fact that kl Anthony Town's got traded. He
knew that he would have to raise his game to
(25:01):
another level. The question marks I have, though, is, even
though I think Julius Random Rudy Gobert individually are great players,
how's that fit going to work? Luka Doncic he loved
hunting that matchup last season when he was at Dallas,
had that infamous viral moment.
Speaker 6 (25:14):
Wouldn't be surprised that happens there.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
The other thing with the Lakers is they had a
full week to rest and prepare. Lebron James is as
healthy as can be forty years old. Twenty second season,
Rawson Reeves all of a sudden looks like an All
star since the Luca trade, more opportunities raising his game
to another level, and they have roster death both with
guys that can make shots and surprisingly Jason They've been
a pretty good defensive team.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
After the Anthony Davis trade.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
Testament to Jackson Hayes all of a sudden being an
elite center, a lot of good effort all the way around.
Hear me out on this. I know you might roll
your eyes because JJ reddicks in, but he's saying that.
You know what, Lebron James has kind of set the
tone with his effort on defense and communication. A lot
of times in the recent seasons. Defense wasn't part of
his game.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
Time off, you know, I you know, it's kind of
not to go conspiracy theory, but when Lebron got hurt
and I said, okay, and and and right right before,
right after he got hurt, he circled that that he
put up thing on social media where he circled the
Lakers where they had six games in eight and night,
they had three sets of back to backs, and the
city I said, I said, he's coming back right after
(26:23):
that's over. And when did he come back? The game
after they had the last of three nights of back
to backs, Lebron came back to plays like, yeah, he
was good, And I get it, because hey, what would
you rather have? Hey, let's let's slog our way through
these games and try to get up maybe another spot
or Lebron gets a nice two week rest before the playoffs.
When you know, if you play him, he's just going
(26:45):
to run out of gas. In the Conference final, but
that's why they get there.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
Okay, he probably would have applied to have COVID happen
again and then the finals time.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
Wow, that's Jj Redick Hay's you now too. Maybe hates
you more than he hates me.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Oh, go ahead, go ahead. I was gonna say, Jason,
great point. It is a real injury. It's not like
it's a manufacturer crot. I think you're hating on a
point here that we have to keep in mind. On
the playoffs, there's so many factors that determine a playoff series.
The number one is always health. So when you talk about, oh,
the chemistry and the rhythm and home court advantage and
who the opponent is, all those things are important, But
(27:22):
if you don't have health, it doesn't matter. And if
you do have health, you always have a shot.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
Which gets us to the team that got eliminated tonight, Dallas,
because what was left of the Dallas Mavericks was on
the court this week in the play in and they're
out after the loss at Memphis tonight. We assume they'll
be healthy with Davis and Kyrie next year. We assume
they're not going to be under five hundred. We assume
they're gonna avoid the play in, but the West is
quite competitive, and in fact, stats Ink came out with
(27:50):
one after the Dallas loss tonight because Anthony Davis scored
forty points in this loss, he was, for long stretches
the only starter contributing in this game for them.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
In fact, in.
Speaker 5 (28:01):
The history of the NBA since the merger in the
nineteen seventy, so we're going back about fifty years. In
a winner take all game, playing or a playoff, Anthony
Davis is only the second guy to score at least
forty points but see his team lose by double digits.
The other was Luca when they lost the game seven.
I believe it was first round against Clippers a few
(28:23):
years ago. So we have two MAVs that are the
only two on that list.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
Oh, they're going to say the other one was, of
course that famous Knicks series. I thought that you're going
to say.
Speaker 5 (28:32):
Yeah, okay, so what is Dallas going to be next year?
Speaker 4 (28:35):
Well, Nico Harrison might need to mend his quote when
he said defense wins championships. Might be true, but defense
doesn't win playing games.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
Yeahn't they don't win playing?
Speaker 5 (28:47):
Well? It went out, David says, we went over, they
would have lost one twenty to eighty today.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
No doubt you hit on a good point here about
their health and next season. Anthony Davis, even though he
has this injury history, I think he past that. He
has shown since the twenty twenty three playoff runt with
the Lakers. He's not going to be mister Ironman playing
all eighty two, but he's going to mostly be available.
I expect him to show what he showed in those
(29:14):
two quarters in his Mavericks debut where he was just
completely dominant on both ends of the floor. So that
should leave the Mavericks encouraged, But what should leave them concerned?
Kyrie Irving has a lot of question marks ACL injuries.
When you look at the timeline of recovery usually eight
to twelve months, and that means that he's not coming
(29:34):
back at the beginning of the season. The best case
is midway through the season.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
Now.
Speaker 4 (29:38):
After his injury, I talked to some outside doctors don't
work with the Mavericks or see.
Speaker 5 (29:44):
As I think the Mavericks don't work for the fair point.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
But the idea was, you know, get a medical insight
on ACL injuries and expectations on usual recovery and all that,
and the overwhelming consensus was that one, he's not going
to come back in the beginning of the season. If
he does come back in the middle of the season,
he's going to be very He's going to be limited,
(30:08):
and the Kyrie irving that we're used to seeing pre
injury won't happen until the following season. Usually the first
season that they returned from an ACL injury. That's minutes, restrictions,
ramp ups, trying to get past the rust. So if
Kyrie comes back next season, it's going to be a
more limited version. So I think with that the Mavericks
(30:32):
are feeling a lot of fragility next season as well.
And to your point, being in a wild while Western conference,
everybody can win fifty eight. I do remember when he
was at Duke and he barely played at Duke because
of a long term injury. He came back and was
still Kyrie. Yeah, I think I don't think this is
his career ending, So don't get me wrong there. But
(30:54):
ACL injuries take a while to recover. We saw that
with Klay Thompson obviously he also had an Achilles, but
Kawhi Leonard it took him some time before he actually
came back into form, and so the feeling is he
might miss all of the next season, but I think
the most likelihood is that he comes back next season.
But it's going to be all about minutes restrictions, not
(31:18):
playing back to backs. He'll find some russ We'll have
some good games, but bad games, and so it's going
to be very important that everyone else around him gives
him enough support. Anthony Davis will do that, but what
about the rest of the team. They have respectable players
with Klay Thompson, Derek Lively, the second Daniel Gafford. So
it's not like we're talking about a team that has
(31:40):
a bunch of scrubs here. But I think when we're
talking about the Western Conference, when you're looking at Oklahoma
City and the Wakers and the Clippers, the Warriors, those
teams just have much more complete dominance than what the
Mavericks ever right now in.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
The Insider Mark Medina on Twitter at Mark g UNDERSCOREA
thanks a bunch for stopping by hanging out with the
studio time. I appreciate you.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
It was a lot of fun, and you know, I
just wanted to show you that when I'm saying nice
things about the nil that's not just trolling you. No, no,
that's good, but I'm sorry. It's it's first round and
then you know better walk next season.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
Time to find out what's trunding right now in the
wide world of sports, and Steve will talk about one
of my teams that actually knows what they're doing and
had a big night.
Speaker 5 (32:24):
We will get to the Mets in a moment, but I'm
sure Eddie Knicks fans losing second round of Boston, the
little slide right past and the New York Boston, there's
no rivalry there, not not going to feel that this
summer in the least. We'll get to the MLB in
a moment, but yes, the NBA's playing tournament is over.
Tonight's games decided the number eight seeds. It was Memphis
against a sub five hundred Dallas Mavericks club in Memphis
(32:46):
at home, a winner one twenty to one oh six
despite forty points from Anthony Davis, John Moran who had
this framed ankle and the Tuesday loss at Golden State.
Did start tonight, did play full starter minutes, had twenty
two points nine assists. Desmond Bane twenty two points nine assists.
Memphis now goes to Oklahoma City for a Game one
to start their first round series on Sunday. In the East,
(33:07):
Miami Heat led at Atlanta by seventeen second quarter. Eventually,
in overtime, the Heat eliminated. The Hawks won twenty three
to one fourteen. Each team was under the five hundred
mark Tyler Hero thirty points. The Heat won twice on
the road this week. Atlanta had lost at Orlando on
Tuesday and lost at home in overtime tonight, So the
(33:27):
season ends for Trey Young, who had twenty nine points
and eleven assists in this game. By the way, this
was the third straight year the NBA's East in the
play in at Atlanta and Miami and Chicago in the tournament.
Miami goes to Cleveland Now for a game one of
the best of seven on Sunday night. The playoffs officially
starts Saturday, the first round gets underway, then second round
(33:49):
starts in early May. The NBA Finals start June. The
fifth Stanley Cup playoffs begin tomorrow with two games, then
some first round series starts Sunday, some start on Monday.
In fact, Twouesday, Florida at Tampa Bay Game one on
the ice. Yeah, Tuesday, So the MLB. The New York
Mets on a solo homer bottom of the ninth by
Francisco Lindor beat Saint Louis five to four. The Cards
(34:10):
had just homered in the top of the night. The
Dodgers were three nothing winners at Texas in a great
pitchers duel, leadoff homer for LA's Tommy edmund Off Jacob
de Grom, the losing pitcher. That was the only run
he allowed. He had seven strikeouts in seven innings. Your
Chinovo Yomamoto had ten strikeouts in his seven innings and
got the win for the Dodgers, who tacked on a
couple runs in the ninth and Shoho Tani is back
(34:33):
in LA on paternity leave. His wife is expecting their
first child. At Houston, two home runs from Cam Smith,
Stros beat San Diego six to four. Wins for the
Angels and Brewers. Washington at Colorado reigned out and the
Yankees won their fifth in a row. Won nothing at
Tampa Bay Buck Team.
Speaker 1 (34:49):

Speaker 5 (36:48):
This is good. We have more of the game we've
been playing today. Yeah, we're first round is Thursday, but
then we'll get to what rounds two and three Friday?
Speaker 1 (36:55):
Rounds two and three, And this is when NFL teams
have team legends come in and make the selections and
announce the selections for their team. Right, we've seen this.
Speaker 5 (37:04):
Instead of the commissioner doing all the announcement of selections.
The list has come out of who the legends are.
So we're gonna play a game called real Legends Fake Picks.
I give you the name of a team in a legend,
and you tell me if they're making the pick for
that team or if it's made up by me playing
as myself. Steve de Seger, Shay ty Shirt. You guys ready,
I'm all right here we go.
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Will Leaveon Bell be announcing the second round pick for
the Pittsburgh Steelers. Levon Bell announcing the second round pick
team Okay, legend Le'Veon Bell.
Speaker 5 (37:41):
As much as I personally would like to see that,
I will say, no, Ah.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Do you think they could even say they have confidence
he would show up?
Speaker 5 (37:51):
Yeah? No, he'll just ruin a year of his career
at Boycott and then come back a here later and
not be the same running.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
Back Shae Is Le'Veon Bell announcing the pick for the Steelers.
Just from what you said, I'm gonna go with no, Okay.
I wanted to say yeah, and then you guys are
joking about it. I was like, oh, maybe I shouldn't say,
But remember, the more you think about where you was
like doing it as a thing. Okay, Tyger, I.
Speaker 7 (38:11):
Thought there you know. Okay, Jays, I'm gonna want up you. Okay.
Not only is Le'Veon Bell going to be there, Yeah,
so will Antonio Brown and Ben Roethelsberger bringing back the
Triple Bees.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Baby Le'Veon Bell will.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
Not be.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
That's nor Will Brown and his frozen foot. Lynn Swan
still be doing it for the Steelers. Lynn Swan still frozen.
It's the unfrozen He's fine now, yes, well, then we
can unfreeze. Walt Disney. Okay, william it's too long ago.
Did you say Doug Williams? Ted Williams, You said Doug
like Doug Williams. What are you talking about? All right?
Speaker 9 (38:52):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (38:53):
Will Richard Sherman be announcing the second round pick for
the Seattle Seahawks. Richard Sherman for the Seahawks. Wow, it's
a different regime. It would be a long announcement. I'm
sure he would find a way to talk for a
long time.
Speaker 5 (39:09):
I'm sure there would be a lot of non football
stuff in his intro too.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
They would say, announcing the pick is Richard Sherman. Richard,
just before I tell you the Seahawks. Pick, don't ever
try me with a sorry wide receiver like crab.
Speaker 5 (39:20):
Tree's right, he's just gonna have Aaron Andrews come on
stage with them so he could yell at her. So
Richard Sherman, I'll go ahead and say yes, Okay, Shay,
Richard Sherman.
Speaker 7 (39:31):
He just got robs, So I'm gonna say no just
because of that. He's got more to think about and
deal with.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
Okay, Ty Shirt.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
He can't leave his house for even a single day.
Speaker 7 (39:40):
Now, say it's a traumatic experience. Ok you know, he's
got to be there for his kids. Okay, he doesn't
like the Steelers anymore, maybe, I mean not necessarily Seahawks anymore.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
We'll see what happ That's fair, that's fair, Okay, Ty Shirt?
Got you?
Speaker 7 (39:55):
Did you say he's doing it for the Seahawks. Yes, Sorry,
I pushed the wrong button.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
Okay, is to push buttons? That's no?
Speaker 7 (40:02):
No, actually no, I know he's not going to because
marshau Lynch is gonna do it.
Speaker 1 (40:05):
Oh well, instead of throwing it, they're just gonna you know,
Richard Sherman is going to be announcing the Seahawks.
Speaker 5 (40:16):
Yes, no, Marshawn Lynch would just show up so he
doesn't get fined.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
Collins Worth be announcing the second round pick for the Bengals.
Chris collins Worth for the Bengals. Chris call He's on
TV every Sunday night, Network TV thirty years be objected.
He slides in right away. He will slide in to
make that second round pin Bengals.
Speaker 5 (40:42):
He should go up there with al Michaels and then
slide in.
Speaker 1 (40:45):
Oh yeah, yeah, Michael, he's not. He's not. Al Michaels
wouldn't be as enthralled with this group of draft picks.
It's hard when the picks aren't as good.
Speaker 5 (40:53):
So he'll be extremely negative in one way or another,
like why did I even have to make this trip
type of think. I'll say, no, okay, it does make sense,
except for the network commentator thing.
Speaker 7 (41:06):
Okay, I'm going with Steve because Steve put us on
his back, on your back, I'm going with you, Steve.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
I gotta say, all right, I don't trust Steve.
Speaker 5 (41:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (41:15):
Wow, Chris collins Worth is not making the selection of
the Bengals. We'll be doing really for Cincinnati.
Speaker 5 (41:24):
He had one of those mega injuries in the Super
Bowl when the Bengals were in the eighties.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
And now he's gonna getut and announce that pick. Steve O.
Great stuff tonight, as always Exit, how about a Fresca?
Coming up next, It's The Plank Show. This is Fox
Sports Radio, Lindoro Juan Soso
