first round of the NBA Draft, and there's already been
some zip you know, Cooper flag number one. Sure that
we thought that was coming, but there's been some surprises already.

Well, I mean you've got some big surprise, a couple
of names you didn't expect to hear.

I really the fact that Shams has no competition, means
there's no pick tipping, and you can just sit with
his feet up till it's official, like all of those things.

It's a new new time.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
We've got a center from China being picked by Memphis
being adding to their roster as we we get things
underway tonight. But the number of people that I talked
to today going, eh, what's on the show tonight, I'm like,
it's the NBA Draft.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Like wait it is, Like yeah, yeah, it really is.
I promise didn't the didn't the season just then? Yep,
just yep, just like like forty hours ago and we're
onto the next season. We're on to the next season already. Yeah,
the next draft, Doc rivers, No, they did not, But
it doesn't matter because the Mets won. Okay, not that
the Mets one. This is a basketball show. I'm just saying,

you got time. We're not even gonna mention the They're
not even gonna make the show tonight. I mean unless
they unless they hire a new head coach.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
They were, But boy, you were gripping though, watching you
sweat out that ninth inning. Yeah, that was some of
the most fun I've had, especially once Diaz had to
he starts getting.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Up, like why is this guy getting up?

And I was like, please.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Bring him in now, just save the day, put out
the fire, please, six six to one in the ninth inning,
we had to bring in Das. But okay, we've won
one out of our last eleven. Okay, that's a big win. Well,
but I mean, bases loaded. He had to come in
and shut the door. Danny Pinzaro couldn't close the door.
He no, he could not. He couldn't show anybody who
the boss was. That was what happened. He did. But big,

I mean people picked tonight that you didn't even have.
The experts are gonna say, we didn't even have this
guy on our draft board. No, that's true. Like this
guy wasn't even on our draft board and he goes
in the top fifteen. Well, I mean, look, big stuff man,
right right up to jump.

I mean, we got the greatest layup of all time
where you literally had to bet one hundred thousand dollars
to win a dollar.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Well, I mean because you knew that
was gonna happen, It's okay, it's okay. Do you think
anybody laid the one hundred grand to win a dollar
dollar just to say, here's one hundred dollars just.

To cash the ticket that said one hundred thousand dollars
and one dollar.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
I could see like a billionaire doing that, saying I'm
a dollar richer than I was. This is why I
make money, and you don't I know where to do it.
I mean, it's not a huge percentage, but gains are gains.
It looks like in the gym. Right. We'll get to
big things in the draft of a second. But first,
I mean, obviously, when we have to talk about a
guy that literally nobody had on their draft board when
he was selected the eleventh overall pick. The Portland Trail

Blazers are selecting, and uh, look this was you know, hey,
here you are. We just get out of the top ten.
We're breaking stuff down. Okay, hey here comes. Uh the
Spurs are gonna have another pick soon. What's going on?
And the Blazers want to select Cedric Coward out of
Washington State, Right, Okay, let's go. This is a guy,
let's go get him. And uh, here was the announcement instead,

a surprise announcement from Andrews that again, is a player
nobody had on their draft but.

It's selected. You know I started at Portland, not finishing there,

Maybe I will go I don't know what do you think?
I don't know, but I'm not I've been there. Don't

that's problem, that's problem. Yeah, but bon Jovi told me

on his Twitter page like a super imposed him in
a Blazer's jersey. I guess I had a big impact

in Portland, so he did, hanging out with r Vetus Sabonis,
was on TV. Had a great career there there, there, Jason.
It's either that or Malika Andrews has a feelings for Colin.

What's why I asked about the contract though. Is she

he never knows that could be there, or maybe I leave.

When Dylan Harper got I mean, because his mom became
a celebrity immediately yes, yes, that's one of the other
you know, subplots of The Night of as we always know,
the moms, the girlfriends, the wives, the girlfriends, going back
many a year, go back to that. You know, the
woman that was with Russell Wilson when he got drafted

and her internet fame or infamy as it were, Laker legend,
his dad Ron Harper, yeahs.

Two titles with them? Did he win all three? He
the guy's like got like twelve championship? Yeah no. But
with the Lake did he win all three? When they won?
He was there for I think two of them. Okay,
but with the Bulls right, oh no, obviously with the Bulls,
but with Lakers, I mean around THEO he won five
three with the Bulls two at the Lakes. Okay, there
for the first two. Yep. Uh So come into the grotto.

Tyser's just gonna pop in with college stuffed all night all.
He's worked down the show a lot, so, I mean
he's picked up the cake. Three people on the show
do a column impression, so unbelievable. Now at Portland, not
gonna go go Fly Fly. I don't think there's any
trails left in Portland. There was one went all the
way through that Now I don't know on the side

a trail that led him all the way back home.

It was my blazing five. Now it's the trail blazing
five that's gonna be the ent It's gonna be his
entire side, rightfully, So you know, I guess the thing
is when that happened, I was like, man, I really
wish social media was really prevalent back what year was it,

because I this is what is one of the big
highlights of my career. Was all right, hang on, This
was in two thousand and nine, so Twitter was just
kind of new then when people were getting on it. Right.
So mel Kiper was on my show every week. He
did a college football segment with me, and he did

(11:14):
an NFL segment with me, and I talked to mel
Off the air. Mel is a great dude. I mean
I haven't talked to him in you know, ten years,
but he was a great dude. Always he would call in,
I would tape interviews with him and we would talk
for like fifteen twenty minutes. After talk, just about different
things about football, about all this stuff. He would give
me jersey quizzes from guys who wore seventy nine for
the pit Panthers. For the final I would go Bill Fralick, Yeah, wow,

(11:37):
you saw you know your biggiest football right. I mean, so,
Mel was a great dude. So on the air in
going into the two thousand and nine bet, it was
a big It was a big deal because he lives
in Maryland and me being a Syracuse guy. In the
NCAA tournament, Syracuse and Maryland were both picked to go
pretty far. So we had this bet where I said, Okay,
if Maryland goes further, I will I think what it

(12:01):
was was I was gonna get him, like, like a
really expensive cheesecake from a big restaurant here in La
send it to him. I said, I if Maryland goes far,
that's what I get. And he goes, what do you
want of Syracuse goes far? Do you want crab cakes
from here in Maryland? I said, no, that sounds great.
But instead, because I knew Jason Smith, offensive lineman for Baylor,
was gonna be one of the top picks in the
NFL draft, right, it was kind of a fun thing.

(12:23):
Jason Smith had him on the show when I was
on Jason Smith. Jason Smith, Right, So I said, no,
when Jason Smith gets picked, you have to mention the show.
And Melt goes, okay, and I'm like really. He goes yeah,
and I'm like, okay, he's not gonna do it, obviously
that I mean, but but it was great that he
said that. Right, So Syracuse goes farther than Maryland. All right, great,

(12:43):
we play it. He goes, no, I gotta do it.
I'll do it, you know. Okay, great, So the pick comes,
he got taken I think like fifth or sixth overall.
So the pick comes in the Rams select Jason Smith
offensive tackle Baylor, and you know, Berman does his all,
Jason the offensive line and they get a bear for
the ol in Saint Louis Mel and uh and Mel says,

(13:03):
and I don't know if it's on YouTube, it's got
to be somewhere. And Mel says, he goes, Mel, how
good you know? How good is this guy? And he goes, well,
you know our Jason Smith who can talk all night, Well,
this Jason Smith can block all day and all night,
and my phone never blew up more in a in
a ten minute span than that time right there, because

(13:24):
everybody's watching the first round of the draft, going oh
my god, Mel just bention like. I was like, oh
my god, I think I had it on my TiVo
for a long time. And then you know you changed
his see because it's back when TiVo U and I
had it forever, and I was I was like, oh
my god. And I talked to the next way. I said,
oh my god, I said, how did you. I can't
believe you said that he goes ah, I lost the bat.
I had to say it, and I go, anybody say
anything to you, Like, I wonder if anybody in the

truck was like I do you would say that he
goes no, no. I just all the way through, He's like,
all right, number two overall picked to the rams. Yeah,
oh number two overall. Number two.

We went after his NFL career, started breeding horses on
his ranch and then they were doing winning a bunch
of team barrel racing and roping events. How about that. Yeah,
that was life after football. But you got Mel to
pay off on the bat. You should have done it anyway.
If he was that and frequent a guest and a
buddy of years. It seems like the nice thing to do,

(14:16):
since there's a lot of time in between picks to
get some non sequiturs and randomness in that was That's
just me.

That was the big That was the biggest bet I
ever won. Right there. I was like, I was, I was.
I mean, my phone was like like on Bobby you know,
the phone was like like on Bobby Benia Day when
everybody wishes me Happy Bobby Benia Day on July first, Right,
that's what my birthday, Father's Day, Bobby Benia Day, every
year those three and then this day in the draft
in two thousand and nine.

because you know, it was a one person draft until
Colin got picked. But number one overall NBA Draft tonight.

Here we are getting towards the end of the first round,
and to no one's surprise, Duke star Cooper Flag did
not have to wait long to hear his name in
the twenty twenty five NBA Draft. The Dallas Mavericks select
Cooper Flag in Duke University. So there it is Adam
Silver on ESPN with the announcement. And you've heard a

(17:03):
lot of comps for Cooper Flag over the course of
the last few weeks, right, because there's really not a
lot of drama. We knew he was gonna go number
one overall. You've heard Scottie Pippen, you have heard Andre Kirolanko,
you have heard Grant Hill, and none of those really
seem apropos. None of all this as like yeah, because
when you see a comp it's one of those things

(17:24):
that it hits you right away, going, oh, yeah, that's
exactly who that is, right, that's exactly who that is. Right,
I get it, I get it. But that's why you
have so many comps, because, eh, it's really difficult to say.
Is he really Scottie Pippen. I don't know about that.
I think he can handle the ball, but is he really?
But the big thing is for Cooper flag like this
is this is the best way to to break him

(17:45):
down in his entrance into the NBA. Now, he's only eighteen,
so it's gonna take him a couple of years because obviously, look,
he's got the talent right away, but and he's big
enough to come in and not get knocked around. But
being eighteen, you're gonna hit the rookie wall at some
point you're playing, you know, a physical position. This is
it's gonna be a little bit again you but you're
gonna see him flash right away. And I'll give you

(18:08):
this in a couple of years, right, So get to
a couple of years that you know, get him. Maybe
come into his third year, the questions going to be
that we're gonna ask a lot who's the best all
around player in the NBA. Is it Wemby or Cooper
flag That's gonna be your question because I don't see
Cooper Flagg as someone who's just gonna light it up

(18:29):
and score thirty a night. Right. Maybe maybe because he's
got so many other skill sets. I mean, you watch
the guy play. He can do everything right. He's a
great passer, he's a great ball handler, right, he can
he can do anything you want to on off he's
got great vision. See some of his passes a duke,
It's like wow, some point guards who come up that
that our pass first point guards don't see the floor
of the way he does. Being as tall as he is,

(18:50):
he's gonna be able to make those, make those Halliburton
like passes where it's like wow, look at Halliburton getting
up making that pass. On offense, he's going to be
a scorer, a facilitator, a ball handle. He's gonna do
so many things. It doesn't mean he's gonna score twelve
a game, but I can see him scoring in the twenties,
averaging twenty two to twenty four to twenty five a game.
But he's also gonna be someone that's gonna give you

(19:12):
nearly ten rebounds nearly tennis is gonna be a different
kind of triple double threat. Plus you've seen him play defense.
He plays defense very intensely, right, a lot of defenses
desire and you see him and he's been such a
big with such a big lynchpin for duke on both
sides of the both sides of the court. Like, that's
gonna be. The big thing is that he can do
so much. You know, it's not like, hey, here comes

(19:34):
player X into the league and you know he's gonna
be a scorer. Right, this is gonna be a guy are
gonna line to score points, This will be guy's gonna
distribute the basketball. This guy's gonna play complimentary basketball. This
is gonna be he can do so many things. He
is gonna be a big score. But there's gonna be
games where he scores fifteen but he has thirteen assists.
There's games where he scores twenty nine and has five assists,
where he scores forty and he has eight assists, and

(19:56):
he's already scores twenty five and he's got fifteen rebounds
tennis sis Like that's the kind of skill set that
he has. And after he gets used to the league
for a couple of years. That's gonna be the big
things we talk about, Hey, who's the best player? Who's
the best player? You have to kind of widen it
out because you're talking about him doing things that not
every star player in the NBA can do. Right, as
good a player as Karl Anthony Towns is the guy

(20:17):
Guy kimb Lay defense, right, as good a player as
Jalen Brunson is defensively. You're you're not sitting here saying
you're not even gonna make any any All Nick defensive teams.
And there's only you know, fifteen people on the Rocks.
It's only seven guys that play. You're not even making
the second team All Knicks. But Cooper Flagg is that
kind of guy where he does everything that's kind of
where I see him. His guy's gonna go twenty two

(20:39):
to between twenty two to twenty seven a game around
ten and ten assists, ten rebounds, like that's gonna be
his career. And there's gonna be times where the Maverick's
gonna be impossible to defend at the end of games
because hey, is this Cooper flag to the basket for?
Or is this Cooper flag? And he finds somebody on
a cutter, or he finds somebody for an open three
like that, it's gonna be impossible to def then because

(21:00):
he has such an expanded skill set.

Well, what's great about it also is that you're talking
about the front line that they've refortified. Right, Gafford signs
the three year extension, you still have Washington. Lively's going
to come back off injury. So now we get the
lob in effect that at six'. Nine we've seen several
examples spanning the last couple of generations of guys at
that height who've just dominated at all ends because they

(21:25):
see everything in front of.

Him you look At, lebron you go back to. Magic
hopefully at some Point Cooper flag is hosting a podcast
or A tv show so he can spin a ball
like it's a globe Like magic did on The Magic.
Hour all that to, say thirty nine just explained the
millennials what The Magic hour. Was that, dude that was.

Man you know, What i'll do a blog about it

ones is when he had when when when he Had

Go BUT i, mean, LOOK i appreciated the effort and
that the guy took a. Spin and, look everything else
he's touched has turned to. Gold and even, that you can,
argue has the it's always the opener of, like, hey
you hosted a talk, show good for, you but you
got a guy that shoots thirty nine percent from three
nearly fifty percent from the field active on. Defense everything

you've heard about him as a, competitor from glowing reviews
From Lebron james and all the guys that worked out
with Him TEAM, usa through his, teammates that that he's,
just you, know one of the guys that just wants
to compete and that nothing's given and that every day
is another, opportunity like all the cliche. Stuff but it's
it seems like you go To duke and everybody wants

(22:48):
to hate. You nobody hated him right at that turn
With Zion, williamson but, oftentimes you know that's.

Fleeting you, know we we we've got thirty year is a,
hey we're going right back to, it But Cooper. Flag
everybody wanted to watch what he was gonna do. Next
we got the opportunity to watch a lot of those
games in studio and in the final minutes, again watch
how teams defended. Him here's three guys flying at him
doing everything again now just to get the ball out
of his hands in an uncomfortable way so we can't

see and make a play as much as to even
take a. Shot so with with the depth and talent that's,
Assembled dallas is. Interesting they're they're a mighty interesting. Team,
Again Nico harrison now can do interviews. Again all, right up,
here what do you want to? Know, hey we took, Right,
hey and remains to. Me we Got Cooper.

Flag and, remember one of the THINGS i theorized When
luca left was the loss of all that. Revenue right
