You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Greetings and welcome in another beautiful night here Fox Sports
Radio Tuesday Edition. Jason Smith off gallivanting in the Greater
Michigan area or heading there. Whatever he's doing, Good luck
to him. At how about a presca. We got Jared
Smith in his stead. You hear him on Countdown Saturday
mornings here on the network, betting analyst, keeping everybody in
(00:53):
line as we get ready for another big football season.
He joins us on Mike Carmen, thanks for being with us,
being part of our extend. We did family and we
have the open that well gets us to the open.
The passing of Ozzy Osbourne's seventy six years old. I
was thinking back of seeing him back in all the
way in nineteen ninety one when I was a wee lad, Jared,
(01:14):
So you're in tonight where I'll probably just start singing
randomly in the middle of hot take nonsense, just because
of the influence the Prince of Darkness had just.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Make sure you turn the mic down because he tended
to scream.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
Right, We don't want to blow out you know, any
any you know amps or anything you know.
Speaker 6 (01:32):
A little too overmodulated.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, once you get in that
red area, they get a little upset with you. But no,
it's this is the first time that I've done the
Jason Smith Show. It's a perfect name transition. You don't
even have to change the initials, like it's you know,
the Jay. I mean, you can literally just go right
into it. So no excited to be here with you, Mike.
We've done stuff before.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
It's going to be a blast. Four hours should fly
by rook one.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
So much going on, obviously, as we get ready for
the start of training camps, guys disappearing and head to
other states. We look at Michah Parsons responding to Jerry Jones. Now,
it's a nice dance. You decide what kind of temple
you want to go to. Maybe it's a mosh pit,
Maybe it's one of those things where guys start chasing
themselves in a circle and you just need to get
(02:15):
the hell out of there before bad things happen. Or
maybe it's a nice waltz. I don't know, but we'll
talk about that as we go. We'll talk about trying
to topple Chiefs Kingdom, whether you actually want to watch
the documentary series, and that's the collective. You out there
in radio land, get in with us at Jared Smith
bets on Twitter, at swallow Dome at Fox Sports Radio,
(02:36):
give us a piece of your mind. We'll talk a
little bit about the AFC wes, some curiosity, some signings
mixed therein as people try to navigate the Kansas City Chiefs.
Last year looked like the year to go get them
and lo and behold there they were still winners. But
you know, one of the things we're gonna lean into
a lot while you're here, Jared, is your acumen in
(02:58):
the betting analysis world and trying to read through the
tea leaves and cut through the noise as to how
to make you a winner at the window, and especially
when we look at the changing faces of college football
and such as to how we navigate those each year
as to stability and instability and chaos when we get
(03:18):
our preview magazines and none of the principals are still
on the team that they're listing with. So all of
that and and then some, and certainly in Major League Baseball.
Steve Disager and I celebrated a bit last night, rich
Hill forty five years old after it against the former team,
looked all right, right, I mean like it's forty five.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
On the road, it wriglely against the Cubbies, who are
supposedly good.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
I would say it did pretty well.
Speaker 6 (03:42):
It's actually the probable. I like that the supposedly good.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
So let's start there, seeing as I'm a card carrying Southside.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
As you and I were talking a little bit before the.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Show, you know the World Series Championship that ESPN refuses
to recognize the two thousand and five White Sox. They
actually had a graphic last week talking about the Astros
with the four nil sweep. Yeah that's right. I got
Niel in because I've been watching way too much soccer.
Another splendid Euro twenty twenty five piece today. But Major
(04:14):
League Baseball trying to find and navigate the beginning of
the second half. We got John Paul Morosi coming up
with us next hour. But on a day to day basis,
you know, where where do you find it? I know
the nurfy is one of your favorite ways to go.
Did you find some value today?
Speaker 5 (04:30):
Yeah, we hit one in Seattle just before we came on. Actually,
cal Rawly gave one a ride to two outs bases
empty bottom one Miserowski on the hill for the Brewers,
and it's actually a perfect lead in to the Cubs conversation.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
But he gave one a ride out the center. But
Miserowski was in.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
I mean, he's just throwing cheese like one oh one,
you know, the change up the curveballs like ninety miles
an hour.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
It's crazy.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
He has an unbelievable extension and his velocity's been fantastic.
I mean, I know people didn't like he was in
the All Star Game, but it was an exhibition and
this kid's gonna be the next scheme, So I understood
why they did it. On the Cub side, that's the
problem is they don't have someone like Jacob Mizerowski. They
don't have a brand of woodrof coming back from injury.
Who's gonna give them innings and explosive innings at that.
(05:14):
I think their rotation is a little more pieced together
with veterans, right, Matthew Boyd, where's this coming from?
Speaker 4 (05:20):
Show to Imanaga?
Speaker 5 (05:21):
I think can be an ace, But then it's Jamison Tyone,
it's Colin Ray like it just it doesn't scare me
if I'm in a five or a seven game series,
if I'm facing Miserowski, Woodriff, Peralta, that scares like that's legit,
like that is a legit file. Like if you're facing
the Dodgers in the NLDS in a five game series,
those three guys would scare me. So I think that's
(05:42):
where the Cubs have a problem. And you could still
bet the Browers a plus money to win the Central.
The market just continues to undervalue this team because they're
not sexy, but they just every year they just kind
of piece it together and then they call up guys
like Miserowski and then really the Woodroff coming back from
injury and pitching well, I think is kind of the
cherry on top because he he is a legitimate syn
candidate when he's one hundred percent.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
So the Brewers have the momentum right now.
Speaker 5 (06:04):
I think the Cubs kind of need a little bit
of a spark, and maybe facing Richel will.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Help, definitely the curiosity of watching over the next ten days.
What kind of action, if any, the Cubs make in
the trademarket. Currently they are minus one forty five bet
MGM and NL Central Odds Brewers at plus one oh five,
and then you get to the long shots of the
Cardinals at fifty to one, the Reds at sixty six
(06:29):
to one, and the Pirates just burn your money. So
all of that to say, we also should define nurfy
for those that are.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
No runs for sinning.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
Oh it's it's it's it's the most exciting bet and sports.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
It's exhilarating.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
And I know the first touchdown bets have been really
fun for a lot of people, but the first inning
bets are fantastic. I wouldn't go crazy with these because
you know, the ball could hit a pebble and go
in the center field and you lose. There's no time
horizon to make up the bet. Like if it's you know,
even the first touchdown that you might have a long
drive and it doesn't result in a touchdown. So I
think they're fun little I'll call them amplifiers to your.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Evening nuggets along the way, No question about keeping an
eye Major League Baseball. We'll get a little more from
Los Angeles a little bit later on as the Dodgers
and Twins get after it full slate. There you've got
WNBA action. I mentioned the Euro twenty twenty five, another
chaotic end to that game. As we get ready for
(07:27):
the well, they're in the Semis and the final will
be Sunday England and the Team of Destiny. It would
appear with another late comeback on a suspect penalty that
was called with about two minutes remaining in extra time,
a save on the PK, but rebound and a score,
and there it is. There's your women's soccer. I know
(07:49):
a bunch of you are really mad at me right now.
I grab the entire sporting world and I hug it.
You don't like it, go watch, but listen to us,
because we'll make you smarter. Along the way, fun with
you as we just get started. For over forty years,
tire racks helping customers find the right tires for how,
what and where they drive. Ship fast and free back
by free road hazard protection with convenient installation options like
(08:11):
mobile tire installation, tirerac dot com, the way tire buying
should be. We're having fun right now with the wonderful
world of college football, Jared. As we look at media
days for all the commissioners and everybody having their speaking
points put out there, and as we expected Tony Petiti,
your new head of the Big Ten, he did exactly
(08:34):
what you would expect talking about automatic qualifiers. We're the
big bad bullies of the block. We deserve our four.
You don't like it, we don't care. I mean went
full Road Warriors to tie it back to the Ozzy
Osbourne Open as Ironman used to be the open for
the Road Warriors, and they run in and just starting.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
All out of people.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
That's kind of what we're looking at with Petiti and
company for the Big Ten and trying to show their
clout and keep this pushing forward to the Big Ten
and SEC kind of ruling the world.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
Yeah, and listen, I think everyone that is absorbing these
headlines over the next couple of weeks. Right, you had
the SEC stuff with Sankie and I you got a
tdat How awesome is it that it's in Vegas?
Speaker 4 (09:17):
So I'm watching.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
Reporters walk through the man like casino by slot machines
and crap stables, and then they're talking to college football athletes.
Speaker 6 (09:27):
It's the new world order, right, It's awesome. I love it.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
I mean, listen, this is I'm convinced.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
I read a lot of like, you know, the universe
type stuff, like we're in this cosmic void. Like it
kind of makes sense when you look at the state
of some of the sports world topics we talk about.
But you're gonna hear a lot of headlines and a
lot of it is just to get your attention. Because
it's July. We don't get a lot of access to
these teams. We get canned soundbites from the coaches and
(09:53):
the team captains that show up, and the commissioners get
a chance to put on their suit and tie and
go in front of the national audience and and you know,
go down their soapbox. And the writers are bored because
we haven't had games in months, and they want something
to write about. That's gonna grab your headline, you know,
it's gonna grab your attention. This college football playoff has
so many more iterations to legislate through that whatever Tony
(10:16):
Batiti says in July twenty twenty five is probably gonna
be irrelevant in July twenty six. So I'm trying not
to overreact to the formats and the different agendas that
these guys are pushing. I just want to sit back, observe,
let the process play out, and when we get word
on what is actually happening, then I'll have an opinion
on it.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Yeah, well of it. It's it's Jared. It's wait five minutes,
and the college landscape change.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
One hundred percent right here, and it's gonna keep and
the goalposts are gonna keep getting.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Moved, right whether we keep getting more legislation that actually
gets into play with congressional intervention versus like I was watching,
Northwestern was a late cumber to the nil world. Today
they sunset the short lived process.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
That they had.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
We've watched, you know, the change as to how you
try to administrate things, the craziness of the Deloitte formula.
Plank and I talked about it a little bit last night,
of trying to figure out what fair market value is
and how inane that process will be enforce.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
The city is the question that I cannot wrap my
head around.
Speaker 6 (11:21):
But you know what I mean, it's city to city.
And you can say, well, don't put together a formula.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
It's like you and I, you know, as we go
through and you try to navigate, you try to put
you know, some fuzzy math together for rankings of a game,
of a player of fantasy projections whatever. You're trying to
figure out how big that coefficient is. And here it's
that same measure of all, right, how many X is
a handshake meet and greet photo op in Los Angeles
(11:47):
versus insert small town, Mississippi, right or city and everything else.
So so trying to really get your arms around that
is a yeoman's task and really foolhardy and a lot
of a lot of prospects. But I suppose you do
have to have some rules in place. Otherwise what you're
(12:07):
really just doing is setting it up to where everything
goes back below ground, like it's been swallowed up at
the end of a horror movie. It's like, yeah, that
went away for now, and and you know, we go
back to the original handshake agreements and and you know,
five dollars, you know, one hundred dollars handshakes, thousand dollars
handshakes in this case seven hundred thousand dollars tucked in
(12:28):
between the seats of a luxury car.
Speaker 5 (12:32):
What it's crazy too, they're paying them with PayPal now,
like I mean, just like the way it's being done,
it's almost like it's like its own it's morphed into
its own entity that I don't think even the people
who created it a few years ago and really kind
of pushed it off the edge really believe that it
was going to take off in the way that it did.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
And now it's more about.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
How do we control how do we figure out the
toothpaste is out of the tube, how do we figure
out a way to keep it from you know, evaporating,
you know, and just completely overtaking the landscape before there's
really no like, there's no law and order with this.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
It's crazy. It really is the wild West.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
And maybe they're gonna start to rant it in, but
I don't know, it's gonna be tough.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Well, that's the thing, right, you started out with his
wide open spaces, and now you're trying to, bit by
bit build the fences and bring it back in just
you know, for the twenty twenty five tax year, IRS
has returned the original form ten ninety nine k reporting
threshold back to twenty thousand dollars from the five thousand
it was last year. There you go for two hundred
(13:35):
transactions for goods and services paid through platforms like TurboTax,
c net and PayPal, and that's one to grow on.
So don't exceed the twenty thousand there, Jared is what
they're saying at Jared Smith Betts is where you find
him in the Twitter verse.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
Find me over at Swallowen Home.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
We're just getting warmed up tributes to Ozzy Osbourne over
the course of the night, his ties to the sporting universe,
which you've laid out a little bit as we go.
We're underway in Los Angeles with the Dodgers and the Twins.
Will keep an eye on that as well as the
rest of the slate of Major League Baseball. But coming
up next, the dance continues in Big d as we
(14:11):
get things reporting to Oxnard Well, Jerry Jones had his say, Well,
now the player said, allow me to retort. We'll do
that as we continue here next on Fox Sports Radio, Hey,

aggressive expansion across the landscape. Joining us now Jared on
the Hotline talking all things trade, deadline and chaos in
(15:33):
between the white lines. It's our buddy John Paul Morosi,
MLB Network, longtime insider and friend of the show at
John Morosi on Twitter at Joen leave out the h
because Mom said so at j on Mr Osi, JP,
My good friend, how are you this evening?
Speaker 7 (15:52):
By Ken Jared, I am outstanding, my friends. We are
nearing that one week mark away from the trade deadline,
one of my favorite weeks of the year, and we've
got Paull of Fame coming up this weekend. I'll be
there in Cooper'stown covering that induction ceremony. So, my friends,
I am in a great mood this evening.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Fantastic.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Good to have you with us, so much to celebrate
and get ready for the speeches. Always bring it in.
Then we get those video montages of all the legends together.
Cooperstown very special place to be this time of year,
no question about it. But as we're talking here from
Los Angeles, Justin Frosberg, our executive producer, wearing a Dodger
cap in the studio, thinking about Big Red Dustin May
(16:34):
taking photos after his one hundred pitch performance and relief
the show a TONI last night. What does he bring
in the trademarket? Is that a Jared durand move? What
are we talking here?
Speaker 7 (16:46):
Good? Good question, I think May is a very interesting
player to talk about, and here's why he occupies a
spot on the Dodger pitching staff that they can probably impon.
And yet his fit with another team is somewhat difficult
(17:06):
to find because he's on an expiring contract and I'm
not convinced that he is going to be good enough
to start games for another team in the playoffs. But
I'm going to give you one team that I think
does make some sense for Dustin May in a trade,
and that would be the Blue Jays. And here's why
(17:28):
the Blue Jays want to add people who can start
but do not necessarily have to start, because they have
an aging Max Ers or in their rotation Eric Lauer,
someone who has not really always been a two hundred
inning type pitcher logging some serious workload right now for them.
(17:49):
And so I do think May would fit the Js
because he would give them some insurance if Surezer gets
hurt and he can pitch out of the bullet up needed,
he can pitch out of the rotation if needed. But
I think that's a bit of a softer landing right
now then the current role that he's got with the Dodgers,
And I do believe the Dodgers. They are looking for
upgrades all the way around, but I would actually say
(18:12):
this the most important part they could probably upgrade at
the moment. You'd have to say, is their bullpen. A
lot of injuries now the Tanner Scott News that the
irony is that actually the team they're playing right now
at Dodger Stadium, the Minnesota Twins. They've got some bullpen
pieces they can move because it looks like they're going
to be sellers at the deadline this year. So I
(18:35):
always love it when the teams all get together because
it wouldn't surprise me if maybe Andrew Freeman is talking
to Derek Falvey's counterpart there with the Twins about potentially
taking a look at someone like Johann Duran would really
help the Dodger bullpen. Griffin Jacks. Also potentially someone like Varlin.
So there are some good names that let's see what we're
(18:56):
gonna get a trade happening between the Dodgers and Twins
before they leave town the sweek.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
How about that, JP, Where.
Speaker 5 (19:02):
Do you draw the line of teams that are buyers
and sellers because we have this expanded playoff and there's
more gray area, like you mentioned, the Twins, they're only
four back of a wildcard spot, the Guardians a couple
games back of a wildcard spot. Like, these are teams
that are talked about as sellers, but they're obviously higher
(19:23):
up in the standings than your typical sellers are. Is
there this curve that we're grading buyers and sellers on
now because of the way that the playoff has expanded.
Speaker 7 (19:31):
Well, you're hitting on a really key and important part
of the way that this deadline is being viewed by executives, Jared,
which is that it's not clear at all where that
line is. And part of this, and this is something
Jed Hoyer, the Cubs president of Baseball Operations, said over
the weekend, the teams are going to have to get creative,
and that's because they're not fitting in this binary sorting
(19:57):
of buyer seller, where you it might be a buyer
and a seller. I think that to put a finer
point on the question that you ask. The Rangers are
certainly buyers. They are a game and a half back,
They're a big market team, and they're in a situation
where they have to, I think keep going for it.
(20:19):
They've played better, They've got Jacob de ground. They've got
n Adi Valdi, they won the World Series two years ago.
They're going to go for it. I actually think the
team ahead of them, with the Rays, they might do
a little bit of buy and sell. Maybe they look
to trade someone like a Zach Lettel who's in an
expiring contract. And so the Padres are another team that
(20:41):
nominally are in it, but it wouldn't surprise me if
they end up moving a lateening leverage reliever, someone like
Robert Swatez or Jason Adam or then you look at
their rotation, someone like potentially a Dylan Ce. So I
look at this, Jared as I know you know hoops
as well. It's almost like it may have the feel
(21:01):
of an NBA trade deadline, where more need for need
and swapping contracts here and there. Being mindful of where
teams are with respect to the luxury tech threshold. I
think we're gonna have one of those deadlines where you're right,
may Jaron Duran, Maybe that's an interesting idea. There's a
lot of player for player, major leaguer for major leaguer
(21:22):
type trades, even the Yankees with Ben Rice, Is there
a team that really values him and would put him
in the field every single day, and it might be
able to give the Yankees a starting pitcher, someone like
potentially the Pittsburgh Pirates with a Mitchkeller. So there's a
lot of different ideas out there that I think trading
younger major leaguers has never been a more plausible path
(21:44):
to upgrading your team.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
So we're looking at the Let's stay in the Al
East for a minute. I do a lot of talking
and while talking off the ledge my friends there in Baltimore,
Cedric Rollins on the expiring contract, a lot of young
players that have underperformed like this is the first for
as long as I can.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
Remember JP he had true expectations.
Speaker 6 (22:04):
For this squad.
Speaker 3 (22:04):
It's been an absolute disaster. How much are they moving
away from some of these players here.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
At the deadline, Well, I think they're gonna have to
and listen that they've had some there have been some
positive stories with this team. Interestingly, one of their better players,
at least against left handed pitching, has been Ramon Loreano,
who actually you would imagine is probably going to be available.
He's someone that I think has had a very underrated
major league career. He's you've got a career seven to
(22:32):
sixty ops. He's on a short term contract, he I
think has a lot of value. I do think Cedric
Mullens could have value too, but Mullens his batting average
now is two thirteen. He's a very versatile player, but
he hasn't really been that effective at the plate since
maybe the end of April early May. I do think
(22:53):
that someone like a Ryan O'Hearn could be a possibility
for the Orioles in a trade to send him out,
maybe some of their bullpen as well, But this is
a team that's not going to go for the major overhaul,
like do not look for a Jordan Westburg to be
out there, Gunner Henderson or a Jackson Holiday. Honestly, they
(23:13):
probably should have traded somebody last year to get Trek
Scubel from Detroit, and they didn't do it. So I
think that's probably the deadline that they're regretting is the
way things played out in July of twenty twenty four.
But I think for right now they have no choice
but to listen and potentially move guys like o'hearne, Mullins, Loreano,
maybe some relievers, and then hope that they have a
(23:36):
better situation and a better, a better overall approach to
the season. In twenty twenty six, I.
Speaker 5 (23:43):
Remember the Brewers were in first place one year and
they traded Josh Hater. They're in first place again, although
we might not have that tonight because it looks like
they're losing this game, but there's still time left in
Chicago won. But they're a first place team, and they're
always kind of straddling the line between buyers and sell
there is probably because of the ownership group and just
the way that their team is structured.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
What do you make of this Brewer story?
Speaker 5 (24:05):
Misserowski's an ace, but he's only pitching four innings a night,
and now you get what'd you have coming back?
Speaker 4 (24:10):
Per Alta.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
I mean, this is a team that has a rotation
that can win right now. But it just I don't
know where they feel. If they're buyers are sellers.
Speaker 7 (24:17):
Yeah, it's a great question. I mean, they're they're definitely buyers.
It's just a question of how aggressively they buy. They
might they might go with some marginal upgrades. But they're
a really good team as they are right now, as
you point out, entering tonight with the best record in
the NL. I love their youth. I love the way
they play the game, a lot of energy. I think
(24:38):
that maybe adding one more outfield bat, or maybe a
righty bat to kind of give them a little bit
of balance out there to help yellows take a day
off here and there. But I just I love their athleticism.
And the pitching has gotten some medlines because of Mazerowski.
Chad Patrick as a rookie, has pitched really well. Peralta
(25:00):
has had a pretty solid season two. Their bullpen is
almost always one of the better bullpens in baseball, even
though the names change there quite frequently. But I just
like the way that their their youth has performed, and
Jackson Curio is now able to bat a little higher
in the lineup. They do miss South Freelick right now
(25:20):
out with injury, but their their bottom half bottom the
bottom half of the lineup. They don't necessarily get tons
of thump from that part of the lineup, but they've
got really good baseball players there who who can play
small ball when it's needed. And this is a team
that that when you overperform by this amount, yes, you
could certainly say that, yeah, let's add in someone like
(25:42):
a like a Ryan O'Hearn from from Baltimore and maybe
a bat in general. But the chemistry of this group
is so good and their manager, Pat Murphy is so
excellent reading his guys that I would be very reluctant
to change out too many guys, especially in the everyday club,
because they seem to be relying on each other and
(26:05):
helping each other perform at the highest level to where
this does not feel like it's a team that needs
to shake up. I don't think they're gonna be making
a deal going out like with Josh Hater that type
of a move with this group, but I do think
they might. They might add by just not subtracting in
that sense and just letting this young group with guys
(26:26):
like Terrang and Freelick once he's healthy, just keep growing
into being one of the better young groups of players
in all of baseball.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
John Paul Morosi, our guest Major League MLB Network with
us here, Jason Smithshaw with Mike Harmen Jared Smith in
for Jason here on Fox Sports Radio. Would be remiss
if I didn't note that this was the latest the
Brewers were in first place since the Harvey Wallbangers squad
of nineteen eighty two.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Wow, So they're all about that.
Speaker 6 (26:54):
So there's your random knowledge.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Let's stay in division because you know, I'm a White
Sox apologist and the Cubs hater. So it's kind of
fun to see Andrew Vaughan become the lucky charm there
for the Brewers as well, with what he's been doing
since he couldn't hit for the White Sox, finding new
lease on life there with the Brewers. But the Cubs,
Jared and I were talking a little bit earlier on
a JP an imperfect pitching staff.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
What do they do?
Speaker 3 (27:19):
Can they go find that arm at the deadline? Are
there enough arms to go around for need?
Speaker 7 (27:24):
I think there are? And there are some controllable guys,
whether it's Mitch Keller with Pittsburgh, maybe even a Mackenzie
Gore with Washington. I don't think that Jill Ryan's going anywhere,
but he's a name to watch, so that there are
those controllable guys. Sandiel Contaa you had mentioned as well
with the Marlins. Edward Cabrera is another name to watch.
(27:44):
And then on the opposite side of things, the rental
guys Seth Lugo, who's going to pitch tomorrow at Wrigley.
My favorite theory, Mike is that the Cubs decide they
don't want to have to face Lugo tomorrow and just
trade for him before the game starts instead, and then
maybe he even pitches for the Cubs. I mean, hey,
we saw Rich Hill start a game for the Royals
(28:05):
tonight at Wrigley, So I think that we're just going
to keep going for more and more historic things that
might happen. So let's let's have a seth Lugo trade
between those two teams who are at the stadium, happening
all in real time. But there are enough of the
rental pipes who I think would make an impact. I
look at the Diamondbacks as being a really good fit,
(28:28):
whether it's Zach Gallon, Merrill Kelly. There are some guys
who are out there, and I know I referenced earlier
Zach Lettel with the Rays. There's more rental starters and
more short term starters in general, who I think are
out there and good options. Adrian Hauser with the White Sox.
You talked about him before. There are guys out there
(28:49):
where I think there's plenty of pitching to go around.
I do believe the prices will come down, and I'm
a firm believer we're gonna have one of our more
aggressive and active trade deadlines that we had a long
time as we get towards July thirty and thirty one,
So keep keep refreshing those those X feeds and keep
watching them. Will be network because we've got a lot
(29:09):
of a lot of moves to sort through here in
the next week.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
To come, plenty of moves to sort through, and certainly
the pageantry and pomp and circumstance that is Cooperstown, our
guy John Paul Morosi will be there for all of it.
It's just too bad we don't have Dave Parker and
Dick Allen to speak for themselves this week.
Speaker 7 (29:24):
Yes, no, you're right, and I'm glad you mentioned both
of them, because it's our goal with our coverage to
make sure that certainly and the two who are going
in posthumously in Dick Allen and Dave Parker, we got
to make sure that we give them in their careers
equal time and let them really let their families have
their moment right, and their teammates and appreciate it. So
(29:46):
I know the pirates are going to be there and
in full force for Dave Parker and sort of the
Reds we'll have a presence there too, I'm sure. And
then with Dick Allen, the Phillies and the White Sox,
the organizations he did so much for, and Thetillies have
really taken the leadership role of retiring his number before
he passed away, and really understanding the impact of Dick Allen.
(30:08):
I'm actually reading his memoir right now. Just a fascinating
person on so many levels, and it's our honor to
be able to tell that story this weekend and.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
One of the greatest sports illustrated covers of all time.
As he's juggling baseballs and smoking a cigarette while wearing
a resplendent red White Sox.
Speaker 7 (30:23):
He is the epitome of cool and always will be.
There is just no I mean, some of the quotes
in that book, I will not repeat them on the air,
but they are they with you. So that's all I
can say is I would recommend you pick up a
copy and then give it a read. That The book
is entitled Crash, So the Dick Allen Memoir and a
(30:46):
lot of the things you'll see in here this Weekend
I'm sure it will make a lot more sense once.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
You read that book, The Super Sounds of the seventies,
as told by Dick Allen at Dave Parker Stories for Days.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
Well enjoy at JP.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
We appreciate to spend in a few minutes with us,
Safe travels and enjoy the festivities.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
Can't wait to hear all about it.
Speaker 7 (31:04):
Always enjoy catching out my friends. Great to meet you
Jared on the air. Look forward hopefully staying in touch
and we'll catch up again real soon.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
Appreciate it, JP, Thanks, thanks, you be well at John
Morossi where you find him on Twitter, catches work MLB network,
joins us each and every week, and you hear him
across the network as well. He'll check in live Cooperstown
over the course of the weekend. Now it's time to
turn it over to our guy, a Hall of famer
in his own right, a legend, Steve Desager, for an
(31:32):
update of what's going on.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
What's going on, Steve, there has been no vote on that.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
You may vote it twice.
Speaker 6 (31:37):
I'm fortunate too.
Speaker 8 (31:38):
That's right, that's right, and all your dead relatives are voting.
Speaker 6 (31:41):
Any of them, no question about it. Get out the vote.
Speaker 8 (31:44):
You mentioned the Brewers. The last time they had baseball's
best record this late in the season, it was nineteen
eighty two. They're sixty and forty right now, but they're
trailing going to the eighth of Seattle one nothing because
Cal Rawly has hit his thirty ninth.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
Home run of the season.
Speaker 8 (32:00):
Logan Gilbert the Seattle starter, with ten strikeouts in six
and a third. The Dodgers have tied it up three
to three against the Twins. Going to the bottom of
the fifth, Andy Paye is a three run homer. That's
about it for the start of Yoshinobu Yamamoto one hundred
and one pitches in his five innings, gave up three
runs but only one urn. The Dodger defense has been
nothing to write home about this year, especially recently. Bottom
(32:22):
of the seventh at Arizona, Diamondbacks ahead won nothing against
the Astros and from Berveldez everything else's final wins for
Tampa Bay and Texas. Colorado beat slumping Saint Louis eight
to four. Cards have lost twelve of seventeen. Pittsburgh over
Detroit eight to five. The Tigers have lost eight of
their last nine games. The Cubs beat Kansas City and
Rich Hill six nothing in his Royal's debut. Hill age
(32:46):
forty five, allowed just one earned run in his five
innings of work. The Giants ended a six game losing
streak with a nine to nothing win at Atlanta. Yankees
five to four winners at Toronto on a solo homer
top of the ninth by Ben rice Off closer Jeff Hoffman.
The Blue Jays first in the Al East, three games
over the Yanks. Now in the NLS, the Phillies are
(33:06):
still a half game over the Mets. Bills and Mets
each one. Tonight, Miami beat the Padres four to three.
Wins for Washington and Cleveland. The Washington Commander's star wide
receiver Terry McLaurin did not report to training camp today
seeking a new contract. He's entering the final year of
his current deal. Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson did not
report he wants an extension. Bills running back James Cook
(33:28):
did report a big contract talks. Linebacker of Dallas Micah
Parsons attended practice. Rams running back Kyron Williams is not
a hold out. He reported he wants an extension. Colts
quarterback Anthony Richardson is due to practice Wednesday with no
restrictions after his shoulder injury. The Dolphins cut back up
quarterback Brett Rippon. Most NFL teams had their veterans report
(33:48):
to training camp today. The preseason schedule starts with Chargers
Lions in the Hall of Fame Game July thirty, first,
not that far away. Those teams veterans had already reported.
In the WNBA New York home beat Indiana ninety eight
eighty four New York Liberty now sixteen and six for
the Fever. Caitlin Clark out again with a groin injury.
Her team is twelve and twelve. She has missed exactly
(34:11):
half of her team's games due to injury this summer,
Minnesota and LA with victories. And by the way, the
ratings are out for last Saturday night's WNBA All Star
Game under two point two million viewers on ABC plus streaming.
If you look at a list of the ten most
watch games this season in the WNBA, there's the All
(34:31):
Star Game, eight Indiana Fever games, and one from the opening.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Saturday that did not involve Indiana.
Speaker 8 (34:38):
But golf got better viewing, better ratings, and that was
viewing at nine am Eastern time. This past weekend, the
Saturday Sunday golf coverage of the British Open average three
point six million viewers.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Back to you, a lot of folks staying up after
coming home from the bars. It would seem watching that
early coverage, no question.
Speaker 4 (34:56):
Yeah, start at ten pm for us out here.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Yeah, here's your random factoid because I'm a nerd. There's
a new tops product coming out at Baseball Cards and
they they've done a thing the last couple of years
with MVP buybacks, so you get twenty dollars trade in
at your local card shop if you have the base
card of the MVP. They did not include cal Raley
on the base checklist. Yeah last year. They might want
(35:20):
to amend that, although we'll see if they have well,
but we'll see if they have to do a Hey,
this guy's cards count because there is no Rally on
the checklist. Very crazy thirty ninth home run tonight, as
Steve gave you.
Speaker 6 (35:32):
Thanks so much, Steve.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
As we continue on, we referenced him earlier in the program,
and why not, I'm a glutton for punishment. When we
talked about expectations and realities for the Chicago Bears, Caleb
Williams setting his sites high. Let's see if Jared's analysis
gets some to those magic numbers. We'll do that next.
Jared Smith in for Jason. I'm Mike Carmon.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio, Jason Smith's Show with
Me Mike Harmon. Jared Smith on loan from Countdown with
us here. Well, I mean that's where you're at over
on Saturday Mornings with Brian No and Rich Hornberger. Getting
set as we get ready for the college football season.
Speaker 6 (36:23):
Part of the pregame.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
There all the betting angles and analysis that you could want,
and right now starting to go through as we have
all of our conference commissioners and coaches getting up there
in peacocking. For everybody showing their wares, that's cool, probably
the best best way to say it, right, politicking and
(36:46):
doing their best to show their weares and say, hey,
this is why you should support our nil efforts. Along
the way, we need more money. That's how this all works.
Keep the machine moving super exactly. College sports what it's
all about at Jared Smith. Betts is where you find
him in the twitterverse. Find me over at Swollen Dome,
sixth inning, top of second and third. Now for the
(37:09):
Twins three to three. As we roll through Walner at
the plate. We'll keep an eye on that game as
it develops, as well as the rest of the MLB slate.
But you mentioned his name earlier, so I'd be remissing
we didn't circle back to it. My beloved Chicago Bears
still training on nineteen eighty five, All these years later,
Ryan Poles gets to the extension after having a successful offseason.
(37:33):
You know, winning the offseason usually doesn't translate to much
in my Chicago world, but hey, we take the wins
where we can find them. Rebuilt offensive line, Ben Johnson
comes over all of these things. It's a new world
order for Caleb Williams, and he set his sites high
on what his personal aspirations are.
Speaker 9 (37:52):
Obviously, I have self goals and that's you know, being
the first four thousand yard passer and bars his story.
That's a goal of mine. Seventy percent completion, helps the
team keeps on the field, puts his in better positions,
and then other than that, just trying to go down
and you know, score the most post points that we
can with these drafts that we have. So that's kind
of my self goal and obviously other you know than that,
(38:12):
you gotta go win. That's success for me, that's success
for the team. That's all we wish for and all
I wish for.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
Well, and there it is the lofty goal and saying
the quiet part out loud. Bears have never had a
four thousand yard passer. You've seen some big seasons going
all the way back to the mid nineties where Eric
Kramer was firing the ball around. Yeah, that's right, I
did that there, and then we saw Jay Cutler and
he add some high flying numbers, but never to those
(38:39):
greatness greatest totals that have become well just commonplace for
the rest of the NFL. Bears sitting at a nice
robust eight and a half, not falling, not charging ahead
or falling behind in terms of win totals. You still
look at the Lions. We talked about David Montgomery saying, hey,
it's it's really the put up or shut up for
us this year unknowns with JJ McCarthy in Minnesota and
(39:03):
then obviously Green Bay. They just keep adding wide receivers,
will Sheppard the latest, But do they have a great
one among them?
Speaker 6 (39:10):
But for the.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
Bears, great expectations. Certainly with Johnson coming over from the
Lions and Caleb Williams, everybody wants to buy some stock,
it seems in the Bears offense.
Speaker 5 (39:22):
Yeah, And if Ben Johnson can't get Caleb Williams to
play at his highest level, that I don't know if
there's a coach who can. I have the utmost respect
for what benj I mean, And when he turned down
the Washington job two years ago. I remember I did
a show the next night and I said, whenever he
takes a job as a head coach, I'm gonna be
all in, because he obviously wouldn't take the job unless
he felt like he could succeed.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
But let me follow up with this.
Speaker 5 (39:45):
If you're a Bears fan, what would you rather have
Caleb Williams throwing for four thousand yards breaking that silly
curse or the Bears winning ten to eleven games and
winning the divisions.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
For a yard and a half If they win games
exactly and ugly, I'll.
Speaker 6 (39:59):
Tell you what though.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
The first this guy calls a half a toss to
an offensive lineman, I will throw a mug through my television.
Speaker 5 (40:08):
But it's like, that's the thing that scares me, is
like the one knock on Caleb is that he can
be a little bit temperamental and maybe a little bit
me First, and the first thing he said is I
want to throw for four thousand yards. And I don't
know how the question was frame, so I don't want
to take too much into it. But if I'm a
Bears fan, I could care less about that stupid record
and everything about going over that wind total and winning
the division.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
Well, and that's the thing, right, He circled back to
winning being the be all to end all, But certainly
a lot has been made about the pomp and circumstance
and pageantry and gadgetry and what Ben Johnson can unlock. Look,
if he goes seven percent higher in his completion, we've won.
Speaker 6 (40:42):
He's Jared
