Speaker 4 (01:07):
Well it was I told you Dodger bullpen, Dodger bullpen. However,
it was a happy TJ and a happy ending in
Dodger Stadium for the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers
beat the Giant six to three, Clayton Kershaw's final start
in Dodger Stadium in theory, in practicality, he goes four
(01:32):
and a third inning, he strikes out Rafael Devers his
final batter. H comes out to a huge ovation, tells
Dave Roberts, do I'm stay in the game. No, he
doesn't get that comes out to a huge ovation. He
was trailing to one at the time. Show Heyo Tani,
it's a three run homer. Mookie Betts, it's a solo shot.
In the fifth inning, they turn a three to a
two to one deficit into a five to two lead.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
They go on to win it six to three. They
win Clayton Kershaw's last start. They likely end the San
Francisco Giants playoff hope. So really a win win night
for the Dodgers tonight, basically on every single way you
could possibly think of on the scoreboard, end in the standings,
and oh, by the way, they clinch a playoff spot.
They had it clinched with Arizona's loss earlier, but now
(02:17):
they're also officially going to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Now out on the field, getting the Kings. Welcome the
crowds staying around just to cheer a little bit longer,
show some love. About as much as you'll ever see
Clayton Kershaw smile anywhere near a baseball diamond. He's not
actually inside the white lines. I think that goes off
as soon as he goes in there. But just incredible, right,
I said, you guys. The clip MLB earlier put out
(02:43):
the fact that the first batter Clayton Kershaw ever faced
May TWI, two thousand and eight, struck him out. Skip
Schumacher the victim. Last batter he.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Faces will skip Schumacher's managing the Mets next season. You
just wait, the Mets blow this down stretch, he'll be
the Mets manager next time.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
He'll get payback. And then he strikes out Devers, gets
that one last hitter takes him down here on September nineteenth,
and then Otani the three run opposite field home run
and the biggest bat flip that's now getting memed already
how much he really walked that one down to first
base as it sailed into the left field seats. But
(03:24):
just an incredible kind of circumstance. Over the course of
the night, every time we had a little break in
the action, I turned up the audio and this crowd
was buzzing all the way through.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
So how did it sound. Clayton Kershaw's final start the
greatest left handed pitcher that any of us have ever seen.
Here's the final call where another left hander finds a
way to get out of a big jam and close
it out.
Speaker 5 (03:48):
Two on two. Out of the pitch, he swings, pops
it up left side of the infield, Mochi bets running
in a couple of steps, he settles under it makes
the catching.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
The ballgame is over. There's in the win column. There
was Dodgers TV on the call right there. They get
the w Clayton Kershaw gets a win, and uh, look,
this is why we talked to this a couple of times,
but I want you to just just follow me on
this where That's why it was such a big deal
tonight that today's tonight's game was on Apple TV. And
(04:18):
Apple couldn't find a way or Major League Baseball couldn't
find a way to say, hey, can we let MLB
network carry your programming? Can we let Spectrum Sports Net
carry your programming. This is not just a big game.
This is not if the Yankees and Red Sox were
playing a big game at the end of the season.
This is the celebration of baseball. Can we take your
broadcast put it on TV so everybody could see it? All? Right? Kershaw,
(04:40):
you know his legacy, And we're gonna get to a
big topic on Kershaw coming up in a second. But
it's something you need to see simply because you don't
know when he's going to pitch again, and if he's
going to pitch again. Now, I firmly believe he's gonna
pitch again. Right at some point you're gonna see him
in the playoffs. But is he gon to start again? Well,
(05:01):
right now, he's scheduled to start in Seattle next week.
But if the Dodgers have the division clinched, is he
gonna start? Do you really need him to pitch? Or
you're gonna wait and let him rest his arm for
when you need him in the playoffs? Is he gonna
start in the playoffs? Well, Blake Snell's gonna start a
playoff game, so is Yamamoto, right, so is Otani? Possibly
(05:21):
Glassnell is gonna start. They've all been pitching well, is
Kershaw gonna start or is Kershaw's best bet to see
him pitch a piggyback game where Otani starts and Kershaw
comes in, and that's the plan going in. It's gonna
be Otani to Kershaw. That's the Dodgers are doing, right,
That's where my money would go. Would be the next
time we see him, I could say, for Shah, hey,
Otani and kersher right, borrow that idea from the Mets
(05:43):
that's worked so far. I think piggybacking is gonna be
the new bullpen games in the playoffs, where hey, we
could save a bullpen and have a couple of guys
pitching each go through the order twice, don't see him
a third time around, Like this is a strategy that
I think is gonna start to become commonplace. But that's
the first time I could clearly see it with the Dodgers.
But that would be the next time I would say, Okay,
I can I can feel for certain we're gonna see
(06:04):
Kershaw in the playoffs because next week, yeah, maybe, but
maybe not like in the playoffs. Yeah you think so,
but maybe not. Right after the first two games of
the playoffs start, everything is up in the air. You
don't know what kind of bullpen you've used? Are you
down to zip? Can you go to Clayton Kershaw? Can
you not like what's gonna happen? Like that? Everything gets
Everything is different after the first two games of a
(06:25):
playoff series, depending where the series sits, how many pitchers
you have used. So yeah, and nothing is set in stone.
That's why tonight was such a big deal to see
Kershaw pitch the last time. No, that's it.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
We talk about history, longevity, one team, one identity. You know,
we started doing the word association game after the announcement
came down yesterday. Jason, what do you do? You say?
Dodgers like Kershaw is one of the first things that
pops up. I mean, it's been part of all life.
My daughter was born a month after the guy debut.
I've watched his entire career. Now she drives away and
(06:59):
tells me to do to beat it? You know it's that.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Did you say? You just tell her? Hey, listen, I
saw what Kershaw has done the last eighteen years. You've
not nearly done enough. That's how you get a retention.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
No, No, I mean we certainly do have our motivational speeches.
There's no question about it. Tomorrow, She'll take the pitch
at eleven am. Dad Taylor may not be loud off
on the side to try to fire him up, we
don't know. But all of that to say, it's it's
just takes on that that whole other scope. Whatever the
Dodgers and they're pushed to a back to back title
(07:32):
and we haven't seen that in twenty five years. It's
a big deal. But how Clayton Kershaw will be used
is the next step. So Dave Roberts, I'm sure we'll
be addressing that in the post game. That'll be one
of the questions. When are we seeing him again? We'll
find out if they stay according to what the schedule
would be in that last start on the road in Seattle,
(07:55):
whether that comes to fruition or not. But to have
this type of celebration and they keep showing his wife
Ellen in the crowd and her tears, and the kids
losing their minds and going mimicking the umpire when the strikeouts,
the crowd hanging on every pitch like it's everything you want,
you know, I give the Wayne Randazzo and Dontrelle Willis
(08:16):
on the call for Apple. You know, they actually addressed
it in the second inning. It's like, well, some Dodger
fans would be looking for Joe Davis. He is here
because it's his bobblehead night, and I wanted to ask him.
You know, one big thing about Clayton, it's like that
the guy didn't stop that he always found a way.
And that's it. Now it's a question of finding your way.
(08:38):
And what you're talking about. We've been going back and forth.
We went with it yesterday with you know, pitchers, and
during this twenty year period and playoffs and playoff Kershaw
versus regular season, tried to find the balance of who's better.
Had a couple of folks stumping for Tim Linsgham, and
he's like and I appreciate that he had three to
four years where he was a dominant starter, a lot
(09:00):
of ten win seasons, but where he was truly dominated,
but obviously a huge guy in the postseason for them.
Now it's Clayton Kershaw's opportunity to have one more chapter written,
uh for this Dodger run. Because as we've watched Dave
Roberts work a bullpen, Jason, they're going to need him.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Oh, ye, hundred percent. You know he went, I'm gonna
use everybody. Look, I feel confident he's gonna pitch again.
It's just you don't know when is he gonna start again?
Is he gonna You can't bank on it, right, That's
why that's why tonight was so special. Now, a really
interesting moment in the game because it was a great broadcast,
you know, getting to see Matthew Stafford was there. Of course,
you know they were teammates in high school. Maybe you've
(09:37):
heard about this story before the Rams even put that
up on Twitter. Yeah, yeah, we had the joke first,
and then the Rams toole it from us. But that's okay,
that's all right. We had to job again. Not the
first time stuff has been taken from us, that's all right. Uh.
But here was Dave Roberts, you know, in a in
a career that had so many signature moments. Dave Roberts
was asked what stands out to him, what's the moment
(09:58):
that stands out to him from Clayton Kershaw's career. And
here's Dave Roberts, You've been with him for ten years.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
What do you think is going to be the defining moment?
Speaker 2 (10:11):
That kersh OUs a Dodger.
Speaker 6 (10:13):
You know what, that's a that's a great question. I've
done with them for ten years, as you said, you know,
coming out of the bullpen in DC to close out
Game five, obviously, running onto the field in Texas, winning
the World Series out of right field.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Out of the pen.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
You know, we've been on a long ride and it
always it hasn't been linear, but I'll tell you what,
there's just no one that has more compete, preparation and
with guys as a professional, and for him to wear
the same uniform for eighteen years is pretty special.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Oh so there's Dave Roberts, you know, getting a question.
I'm sure he didn't expect to get. Oh man, yeah,
ten years ed you said, what am I thinking of?
What am I thinking of? But honestly, I think he
hit on the answer, because look, he's had a no hitter.
Shaw had two runs during his career where he went
hitless for over thirty seven ings, had a forty one
innings scoreless streak, And you know, clearly you gotta do
(11:08):
that if you want to be a Dodger all time great, right,
because that's what all the greats do, and give you
a big scoreless inning streak, but him coming out of
the bullpen in the in the twenty sixteen playoffs to
get the final outs in a winner go home situation
against the Nationals. When ken Lee Jansen came in in
the eighth inning and ran out of gas, walked the
(11:29):
first two guys. In the ninth inning, You're thinking, Oh,
my goodness, what's gonna happen here? Like the Dodgers shouldn't
be in this situation against the Nationals and they should
be going on. And there's just something about a great
starting pitcher coming in out of the bullpen, and I
remember the excitement of seeing him come out. It's the
only save in Clayton Kershaw's career. He gets the final
(11:52):
two outs of the game, and I think it was
like six or seven pitches. Daniel Murphy's one of the
most dangerous hitters in baseball at that point. He gets in,
he gets the final batter, and the Dodgers go on
to the NLCS, and it was I remember it being
such a charged moment. I think he pitched the game before,
if I'm not mistaken, Like the game before two or
two days before he had pitched, and here he is.
(12:14):
I can come out, I can give you the rest
of this inning. There is just something about that. And look,
you had Madison Bumgarner take it to incredible sublime levels
when he comes out for what was it, seven innings
of relief to win the World Series over the Royals
twenty I mean that was a big thing. But to
see Kershaw come out and do that again the only
save of his career, Like, that's what I think back to.
(12:35):
Just I remember the energy of the moment of seeing Wow,
Kershaw coming in to save this game. I mean it
was one of those you lose your mind moments as
a baseball fan to sy.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
It well, whenever you go against the grain, right, I
mentioned Linzkum before the Bumgarner, like those playoff moments that
create legends and opportunities and you know, the pinch hit
home runs like things like that that are just all right.
We go think through our sports watching so linearly that
when you have this jarring piece of wow, they're gonna
(13:08):
use that guy. Okay, let's see how it goes, because
you have no idea, right how they're gonna react to
a situation that they have not done, you know, since
they were probably much much younger, maybe back in high
school relieving for Matthew Stafford. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
But all of that.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
To say that there's just so many moments with this guy.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
It's eighteen years.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Yeah, like he is for I think most folks, the Dodgers,
like you look at their history.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
There's a lot of stars.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
But a lot of that. You know, you go back
to the origin stories in Brooklyn. Obviously you have Drysdale
and Coofax, and then you've got a lot of guys
that were great Piazza and Garvey and Say and all
those guys that come through. But then it goes straight
to Kershaw for two decades.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
It's crazy. Now I ask you this big question. Yeah, obviously,
Claytonshaw first ballot Hall of Famer. Does the voter who
didn't vote for each Row, does the voter who didn't
vote for Peter not vote for Kershaw on the first ballot.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
There'll be a few that won't because they'll cite the postseason.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Yeah, oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
I don't matter what happens this postseason. We're doing the
show today here on September nineteenth. I can't do If
people had to vote right now, they'd say no, no, no,
he was not clutch when it mattered.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I can't vote for him at all.
He's gonna vote for him in.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Good conscience because you know, he was just a five
hundred pitcher in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
He's struggling getting that seventy five percent because of the postseason. Wow.
I didn't see that coming. But all right, well, we'll
keep you update. Maybe next year. Maybe next year for
Clayton Kirkshaw.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
I'm not saying it's critical mass of twenty five percent,
but I guarandamnt it'll be more than one guy. You
got it. You got an honest vote from folks. That's
exactly the only thing they can put their hat on.
Speaker 1 (15:01):

Fox Sports Radio, Huger, Ricky Hunkle, Ricky, I'll rage your
bedtime Storry. Clayton Kersher had his final start tonight. The
Dodgers won. Good Night, Jason and Mike Uh. Clayton Kershaw
final start as a Dodger tonight, four and a third innings,
(16:28):
Matthew Stafford on hand, his wife and family on hand,
everybody on hand. Dave Roberts gets a standing ovation when
he takes Clayton Kershaw out of a game, which is
really shocking for Dave Roberts, and really I really kind
of wanted to see Kershaw saying, no, I got this.
I'm coming off the mound, the under I got this.
You go back. If Blake Snell can send you back,
(16:50):
I can send you back because I wanted to do
that in my whole career, Dave. I wanted you to
come and you come out and take me off. I
want to be that guy. And Blake did it, and
I'm kind of mad about that. It's Blake's fault. Don't
blame Blake, but I wanted to Blake snell it, and
Blake Snell did it like three days ago. So I'm
doing it now. Dave, go back in that dugout. Send
Henriquez back. You got back into that bullpen, and you
(17:10):
run fast. You know, you don't go back like Vessie
where he's shaking his head. You run back to that bullpen.
I'm Clayton Bleeving kershaw Man.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
I got nine more pitches than me. I'm only at
ninety one. Ye yeah, Okay, get your ass back.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
In the dugout.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
I gotta make this game official. Let's go. Boy, What
an ovation, What a moment. Dave roberts about the only
time he'll ever be cheered coming out to get to
get a picture.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Yeah. No, usually not usually he's not. He comes out,
you know what, what does he say, like, I'm the
grim Reaper. I come out and it's like, hey, you know,
I understand that no one likes it, you know. I mean,
if if it was someone else other than Dave Roberts
managing the Dodgers the last ten years, it would be
And how about this the Dodgers. Some they have fourteen
no hitters in the last ten years. Boy, I'll tell
(17:56):
you love the fact that their manager will stay in nattingly,
will allow them to just stay in the game and
throw one hundred and fifty one hundred and sixty pitches,
but they get the no hitters. Boy, look at that's
some kind of achievement. There's the question your's removed.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Now many of these guys no longer pitching in Major
League Baseball. Maybe they never got that big moment. Do
you think if you ask them in just the right circumstance,
are you still pissed at Dave for taking me out
in the seventh Of course.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
I think any pitcher that gets taken out in that
kind of situation at the end of their career goes
that was my chance to be immortal, Like that was
my one thing, and I would think about that every
day and have a great bat instead. I think of
every day about how you took me out of that game.
I didn't get a chance to pitch a no hitter.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Do you still get to side baseballs? Would have been
a no hitter, but Dave took me out.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Yeah, yeah, he did.
Speaker 6 (18:47):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Inscription and Dave Roberts just signs at g R. What's
gr Grim Reaper? Oh right, right right, I got that.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Okay, he just has a stamp with a picture of
the Grim Reaper. I'm not even signing his name anymore.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Now before we get to the NFL, this quick note
here because I'll tell you this right now to make
this bold prediction ahead of times big. In the WNBA tonight,
the defending champion Liberty are out right. They lose to
the Mercury seventy nine seventy three. Thomas has a triple double,
which is a phenomenal accomplishment. This is now the second
of the top seeds to fall in the last couple
(19:22):
of days, right, the Dream fall of the Fever and
now the Liberty fall of the Mercury. And I'll tell
you two things that are gonna happen for next year
for the playoffs, one hundred percent. Number one, everything's gonna
go to a best three out of five because finishing
ahead in the standings you should have a little bit
more that Well, it's a three game series, like it's
a little club. Anybody can win that. It's a little close.
But you're also going to find a way to do
(19:42):
stuff more geographically making sense, because there's no way it
makes sense to have New York and Phoenix play in
the first round. I mean, come on, especially three game series.
You're flying in, flying back flying in flying back flying.
That's just dumb, right, So the two things that will
happen because you could do it. WNBA is popular now
you can have the best three out of five. It's
it's it's big enough for it. You don't have as
(20:04):
many teams in the playoffs. You can do that, and
uh yeah, they'll find a way geographically to make it
work a little bit better as stuff that makes sense
because something like this that's just again, this is NHL
nineteen eighty where they would just see the teams one
through sixteen, regardless as to what I mean think about
this is how it worked in the NHL forty years ago.
(20:24):
Like one through the Like I remember going through the
standings and going okay, the Islanders have the most points?
Who has the second most point? In time? And I
go okay, So the Islanders will play the Kings in
the first round. So it's gonna be the team's traveling
three thousand miles for two to two and one Like
that makes no sense, and that's something that's forty years old.
Like this is how the WNBA does it. Those two
changes will be made easy for next season.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Yeah, what do we have five more teams coming on
tap right in the next five years, four to five years,
so we'll get us out to eighteen split conferences nine
and nine, bing bang boom, geographic.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
We move on.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
So uh, it'll fix the glitch the hype for growth
of this. You know, they probably should have looked at
this schedule, but again they were They're also scheduling their
first playoff games against an NFL Sunday in September. Hey,
maybe one of these schedules, baby. But that's the point
I was trying to make, is they weren't. They weren't
(21:19):
looking ahead enough to realize, wait a minute, that's a
Sunday in September and They've done a great job. And
that's the thing that I think has been lost in
with Caitlin Clark having missed all the time she did
with Angel Reese and her fighting with her team and
the missing time due to injury.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
All of that stuff.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Is that ratings and volume of people in stadiums, in
the arenas, it's all gone up. Now you just need
to go back and uh well, I think it was
another Herm Edwards ism, right, It's like everybody can sweep
the middle of the floor. I need you to work
in the damn corners. I need you to go get
the cob webs. I need you to go get the.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Rest of that. And that's where the w N Bay
they get weak the middle of the floor. They got
to get the rest of it. No sure. Now coming
up in ninety seconds, we take a look at some
of the biggest games in the NFL this week and
is a Football Friday preview and prognostications the rest of
the show. But first it's special delivery. Steve to say.
(22:18):
It will take you through everything that happened tonight the
night in sports. Of course, no moment bigger tonight. We've
been talking about it a lot than Juan Soto's three
run homer career high in home runs for him, the
Mets win again. Steve has the details on that more run.
Speaker 8 (22:34):
Okay, let's just get it out of our system here.
Red still two games out of the last wild car
behind the Mets Diamondbacks loss. They're three back in the race.
Giants now four back in the race. By the way,
Mets and Reds each one at home, Giants are at
Dodger Stadium all weekend. This might be a lost weekend
for them, as crowded as it is for the last playoffs.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
But they're cooked. Their four games out, I mean three
teams ahead of the They're cooked. And in the.
Speaker 8 (23:01):
Ends standings too. The Padres are four games out now.
They lost at the White Sox tonight four White Sox,
ending a six game losing streak.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Now, all of a sudden, the Mets are only three
games behind the Padres for the second wild card now
look out, and.
Speaker 8 (23:15):
The Dodgers beat San Francisco six to three. So how
about this. These two franchises head to head all time
in the regular season tied one thousand, two hundred and
eighty seven wins each with nineteen ties. After tonight Apparently,
it's the first time the Dodger Giant head to head
(23:36):
series has been tied since eighteen ninety six, So there.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Really yes, wow, was that a Sarah that sounds like
a Sarah Langston?
Speaker 8 (23:43):
She got it from the Elias Sportsborough, but yes, she
did pass it along. Sho Heo Tani tonight with the
go ahead three run homer his fifty second, and yes,
the Dodgers mathematically clinched a playoff spot with Arizona's home
loss eight two to Philadelphia. It was three to two
going to the eighth. The Dodgers, with now the four
game lead in the division. Clayton Kershaw threw ninety one
(24:04):
pitches tonight as the starter and what might have been
his last start at Dodger Stadium. He's retiring after this season.
His career ERA against the Giants was two point eight
going into tonight four and a third innings. He did
allow a leadoff homer, six strikeouts four walks. He's ten
and two after the no decision. Saint Louis beat Milwaukee
(24:24):
and Cincinnati over the Cubs. Red's hit five homers in
fact in a seven to four win against the Cubs.
The regular season ends a week from Sunday, Miami won
in twelve innings at Texas. Colorado sent the Angels to
an eighth straight loss. Seattle is alone and first in
the AL West game ahead of Houston after winning at
Houston for nothing. Mariners hit four solo homers. Houston had
(24:46):
only three hits in the game. Ace of the staff
Brian Woo fifteen and seven for the Mariners. He threw
five shot out innings with seven strikeouts, but left tonight
starts with pectoral tightness. They say. Cleveland has won eight
in a row. It got two in the eight two
runs in the ninth to win six to two at Minnesota.
Guardians have won thirteen of fourteen and they're only two
(25:08):
and a half back in the first place Tigers in
the AL Central. Tigers have lost seven of eight and
they play at Cleveland starting Tuesday. The final week of
the season, Detroit was beaten at home ten one by
the Braves tonight, the loss to veteran Charlie Morton, who
was down six to nothing pretty quickly. Boston got a
win from Garrett Crochet and eleven to seven victory at
(25:29):
Tampa Bay, while Toronto and the Yankees each loss that Toronto.
Loss was twenty to one. At Kansas City College football
on Fox TV saw Iowa get two touchdowns in the
last six minutes to win at Rutgers thirty eight twenty eight.
Each team is three to one. Tulsa wanted Oklahoma State
nineteen to twelve. It was nineteen to three to start
the fourth quarter. In the WNBA Playoffs, the first round
(25:51):
is over Phoenix at home. Eliminated New York seventy nine
seventy three Breanna Stewart thirty points in the loss. Their
postseason has three rounds. We had the best of three
first round. As you mentioned, it's a best of five
as the semi start on Sunday, and then it will
be a best of seven finals. But the w NBA
finals will be opening opposite Major League Baseball's wild Card
(26:11):
series in the NFL, and etcetera, etcetera. Commander's quarterback jad
And Daniels out this weekend with a spray knee. Quarterback
of the Bengals Joe Burrow had his toe surgery today.
Broncos tight end Evan Ingram out with a bad back.
He missed practice all week. Seattle running back Zach Sharbine
is doubtful for the weekend with a foot injury, Packers
(26:31):
tight end Tucker Craft questionable with the knee injury, Colts
tight end Tyler Warren questionable with a toe injury, and
the Falcons released kicker Young way Ku and gave kicker
Parker Romo a two year deal.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Back to you, Well, when you kick five field goal Stevos,
sometimes that happens for you. Hey, great day, got that
Romo kid? Uh yeah, Well, had to make sure we'll
get we'll get. We already have a good kicker, but
I figure we get another one playing both the same time.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
It's more guys for Dak to throw the football.
Speaker 8 (27:00):
And so pretty soon the Falcons kicker will be on
a trip mid season to Mexico and.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
They'll call him Parker Cabo. Thank you, Steve. I have
a great weekend, my friend. So big games in the
NFL this weekend. Look, we broke down Dallas and Chicago,
a couple of big ones to get to here. And
I'll tell you what This is my AFC Championship game preview.
Because I've told you Broncos and the Chargers from the
(27:30):
beginning of the season, Denver needs more time to gel.
They're not quite there. Their defense is close, their offense
a little bit more work. They have some new pieces
to figure out. You know, Evan Angram is hurt hasn't
quite been the joker they thought he'd be. The first
couple of weeks of the season. They're still figings Franklin
gonna be their number two receiver. So this is not
quite the team they're gonna be middle of the season,
(27:51):
right But I have no doubt that the Broncos are
gonna get there because they're that well coached. I am
buying on the Chargers to keep things rolling. This is
a team right now that is the best Charger team
since the mid two thousands with Rivers and LT and
Sean Merriman and Antonio Cromarti. This is how good. They're
the best and most well coached team since in nearly
(28:15):
twenty years since they were a yearly threat to go
to the Super Bowl. And mainly the big thing this week,
justin Herbert is playing better at a higher level than
bo Nicks. You do not get well against the Charger defense,
because the Charger defense is a top three unit in
the NFL, and everybody's kind of finding that out now.
The Chargers keep the good times going. I told you
(28:35):
how much I like them before the season. After this week,
it's gonna be Wow. The Chargers might be Super Bowl favorites.
That's what's gonna happen this weekend. Give me the Chargers
over the Broncos, and I'll give you this Bowld prediction.
Chargers running backs team up to run for over one
hundred yards in their quote breakout game. I gotta say
running backs because right now, Justin Herbert's the number two
(28:57):
rusher on the Chargers, So it's Chargers backs. Like Naji
Harris starts getting untracked of, Marian Hampton gets untracked a
little bit. They both go for all over one hundred yards.
I like the under in this game. I don't see
this game being a ton of points. I like the
Chargers in like a twenty to thirteen, twenty to sixteen
kind of game. They go to three and zero.
Speaker 3 (29:16):
Kind of fun, fun game here early in the season.
Third straight division game for the Chargers. They're the better
squad right now. Curious to see how much the defense
changes up with no Khalil Mack. Eventually he'll come back.
But I'm not trying to rhyme, but the Olbow injury,
not season ending, but on the shelf for a bit.
(29:37):
Three is the home home field advantage as it were,
Chargers by three forty six is the total. I'm going
under this total because I don't think Denver's offense is
mustering that much. Be curious to see how much Herbert
with the deep threats, when you look at what Johnston's
starting to become a little more consistency down field, to
(29:58):
whether they start pulling the strings a little bit. There
no green laws something at Steve had advised they had
a pretty long injury list, a bunch of guys upgraded
to full participants on Friday. But we're in week three, man,
and you're already citing half of your defense on the
injury report. Now, since you did mention odds, let's go
to the AFC Championship odds for a moment. Shall we
(30:20):
your favorites from after last night plus two twenty five
the Buffalo Bills, followed closely there by the Ravens at
plus two forty, and then we have two teams tied
at plus seven hundred, the Jets or Chargers, oh no,
you're Chargers, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Chiefs had started
(30:41):
the season at plus three fifty or plus three seventy five.
For what it's worth now to make you feel slightly better,
you're not the worst odds. Oh okay, AFC, you're tied
for the second worst odds.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
Oh one hundred and fifty to.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
One are the Dolphins and Jets?
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Oh wow, well the Dolphins actually, well they have more
losses than everybody, So I get that. I mean maybe
that'll switch on Sunday when the Jets go to zero
and three.
Speaker 3 (31:08):
And the Browns at plus two hundred two plus two
plus twenty thousand, I should say so two hundred to one.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
Uh, let's stay in Los Angeles where the Rams and
the Eagles. Another incredible game this week. And I told
you I've been buying on the Rams all year. I
don't care how the Rams are winning games early. All
they got to do is win early. They saw last
year saying we got to get that game in LA
instead of in Philadelphia. Doesn't matter how we win games early.
(31:35):
We usually just don't win early. We go from a
team saying we need to be blown up and start
over the first six weeks to the last six weeks
are we're the best team in the NFL, So it
doesn't matter how the Rams win. They just have to
win their defensive lights out. They are finding ways to
do it. Philadelphia hasn't looked great so far. They've they've
played just well enough to win against a Cowboys team
(31:58):
that's not very good. Again, it's a Chiefs team at home,
a little bit better obviously, but they needed a big
drop by Travis Kelcey to win this game. Doesn't mean
the Eagles are terribly but they're a team coming off
the Super Bowl. You expect them to be a little
bit sluggish to start out the season. But give me
the Rams in a revenge game, a late defensive stand
to win because they're still trying to figure out how
(32:19):
to get going offensively. And look, it's just not gonna
be the same year for Saquon Barkley, right, not that
he's suddenly awful or suddenly he's a but when you
come off a year of four hundred touches, I mean
just go back and look, no matter what running back
you are, you come off a season of four hundred touches,
that next year ain't gonna be so great. You're gonna
(32:39):
gonna take a while coming back from that. That's a
lot to go through, and that's what Barkley went through.
It's been tough sledding for him so far. It's gonna
continue to be tough sledding with this Rams defense. And
I'll tell you what, I'll give you a Bowl prediction
for Sunday as well. Barkley under sixty yards rushing his
tough twenty twenty five continues, Rams win, and all of
a sudden, we're talking about maybe the Rams and the
(33:01):
Chargers are going to the Super Bowl this year.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
Rams plus nine point fifty to win the NFC at
last look decided marked improvement Packers currently the favorite to
hoist the trophy and head to Levi's Stadium. Now, when
we look at this one, what I was curious about
with the Rams is the infusion of Blake Korum into
things last week, and I love that going forward, a
(33:27):
little thunder and lightning kind of situation. Yes, if you're
a fantasy owner of Kira and Williams, you are a
little bit salty based on that, but it's good for business,
it's good for longevity to go in and try to
tenderize the heart of that Philadelphia defense. Set up some
play action and some opportunities downfield. Devanta Adams has been
fantastic and I think he feasts against whoever they run
(33:51):
out as the second cornerback. That's the matchup that you
hang a star on, right. Pukin da Kua will draw
a lot of Mitchell and they'll chase each other they're
around the field. But that means the number two option,
maybe the tight ends a little bit get involved and
you see them make Hey that way, I think Philly
wins the game narrowly. I'll take the Rams plus the
(34:12):
three and a half and I'm taking the under on
this forty four and a half. I'm pushing underneath. I
think both defenses solid. I think your Barkley analysis spot
on goes to some of the You also need him
around come January, coming off of that huge workload and
what he'd been through with the Giants before that. That's
a lot of carries on the body. So you're trying
(34:34):
to be judicious. What I will be curious to see
do we get a penalty on a push toush right,
trying to figure out odds on that, because I mean
that kind of changes, like we talked about here yesterday.
You can go find the podcast does that change whether
you need to outlaw it, if officials actually have the
guts to throw a flag on it. But it changes
down in distance whatever. But the downfield passing game, I
(34:55):
got to see something from the Eagles here at some point,
don't I. I mean, god, it will be that on
this week.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
But A J.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
Brown and Devonte Smith, I mean DeVante Smith doing all
sorts of great things off the field. You can read
about that, but like it's just a it's just a
tough time. They're both gonna be sitting there.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
They're gonna have a book club before long exit out
about a Fresca exit swollen down. The Jason Smith Show
with my best friend Mike Harmon. Coming up next, we
put a bow on the biggest story in sports tonight.
The moment that Clayton Kershaw, his final moment on the
mound reminded me of and it's really weird and crazy
(35:32):
that this is what it's comparable to. That's next right here,
Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app Fox.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon. Oh, the final Dodger Stadium start for Clayton Kershaw,
maybe his final game, because see what happens the next
couple of weeks. Will he really start next week? Will
he pitch in the playoffs? But we saw him tonight
(36:12):
four and a third innings, and just like for strikeout
number three thousand, he gets a little bit of a
favor done for him by the home plate umpire because
boy did that pitch look low. But here, you know,
the final pitch of the night for Clayton Kershaw, maybe
his final pitch ever at Dodger Stadium. Who knows if
we're going to see him when we see him again.
(36:33):
But here's how it sounded on Apple TV, kind.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
Of beaten one of the biggest opponents. Strike three called,
and Devers goes down looking six strikeouts for Kershaw, that
one coming on a.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Fastball, and here comes Dave Roberts.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
That was it on Apple TV again, Apple TV, Hey, wow,
a little bit more pageantry, guys, like a pretty big deal,
greatest left handed pitch we've seen coming off the ground. Okay,
let's see a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
But He's fireworks in the second inning, brought to you
by Apple.
Speaker 1 (37:02):
Yeah, we'll be back pitching change coming up, uh Bi
Henriquez coming in on the way out. There goes Kershaw
getting hugs from everybody. But it was really weird because
you know, we talked earlier this hour about what Kershaw's
signature moment is for his career, and it was so
many of them. And look, I go back to it's
like everybody picking what their personal favorite was, and I
go back to coming out of the pen to close
(37:25):
out the Nationals in the twenty sixteen playoffs, just because
the energy of him coming out of the bullpen after
you had just pitched like the day before, had just
started the day before to do it, it was such
an incredible moment. But he's had so many of them.
And then you watch him come off the mound for
the last time, hugging his teammates, hugging Dave Roberts, thanking
(37:45):
Dave Roberts, waving to the crowd, hugging himself as if
he wants to give the crowd a hug. I'll tell
you what that moment reminded me of. It reminded me
and a lot of the career and the end of
his playing career of Kobe Bryant, right, because Kobe remember
the sixth, not the frenetic, because remember Kobe had sixty,
(38:05):
and it was everybody was out of their minds the
way that game ended, Bud.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
If we couldn't get anything done here, everybody was running
out down the hallways.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Like get back there.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
It actually get its highlight please.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
I mean, he gives the mamba out speech and then
it's the same thing. It's him coming off the floor
and hugging everyone and waving to the crowd, and he's
got the towel around him and confetti is dropping and
he's waving to the crowd, and it really was the same.
It was the same emotions as with Kersharks. It was
a career of Kobe where you know, pick your favorite
(38:36):
moment for Kobe Bryant, right, Pick your favorite moment. Maybe
it's this game. Maybe it's sixty points in this game.
Pick your favorite Clayton Kershelm, maybe it's his final strike.
Maybe it's him walking off the floor here, right, I mean,
I mean it was it was so similar seeing here's
a guy that had an incredible career in Los Angeles,
same team, all the way through, and there's so many
moments to choose from, but him walking off the floor
(38:59):
you'll always remember. And the same thing with Kershaw tonight, right,
so many different moments, the forty one inning scoreless streak,
the thirty seven inning scoreless streak, his no hit or
whatever you want to say, and again walking off of
the same kind of ovation, the same kind of situation
where I guarantee you it was as electric in the
stands at the end as it was when Kobe walked
(39:19):
off for the final time. And again it was just
so similar to see those things play out the way
they did.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
Yeah, it's lifetime, right, Opportunities to go elsewhere, Rumors of
guys going elsewhere, forcing their way out, going back to
Kobe with Kershaw a couple of times where things that
dipped coming off injuries. Was he going to go back
to Texas? In the end? Storybook? Eighteen years and you
finish this more smiles tonight that I think we've seen
(39:48):
outside of World series titles. Clayton Kershaw just an amazing night.
Speaker 1 (39:54):
Yeah. Look, and I know he's scheduled to pitch next week.
Maybe he does, Maybe we see him in the playoffs.
You want the right thing. Dodgers have a lot of
starting pitchers now, so they're pitching, well, uh, piggyback with
show hey Otani? How crazy would that from one Dodger
star for eighteen years. It's almost be like a passing
(40:14):
of the torch. Otani piggybacking with Kershaw for a game.
It's a big popular thing now. The teams are gonna
do if you're gonna see him pitch in the playoffs,
and you want to, you know, figure out a great way,
a way to juice the team and and uh, when
you can guarantee see Clayton Kershaw, you could do worse
than that for Otani for the first five inning. Says,
that's all you're gonna get really out of Otani first
four or five. Go to Kershaw for the next four.
(40:35):
Sign me up for that.
Speaker 3 (40:37):
I think you're just trying to make the term piggybacking happen.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
I'm not gonna have to make it happen, dude. It's
gonna be a thing. Man just says, you're.
Speaker 3 (40:45):
Really you're really pushing it. It's like it's like your.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
Fetch instead of instead of bullpen games. Oh, we can
take two pitchers who can go through the lineup twice
each and then we go to our go to the
next guy out of the pen. Uh Tony piggyback Man
piggyback exit out Vita Fresca exit swollen Dome for Mike
Im Jason coming up next to's fn A on FSR.
This is Fox Sports Radio.
