Speaker 3 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Hello, Welcome in side hour two of an E Cup
Championship night, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Step trying to make fetch happen.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Time out on the floor right now, they are looking
to see where an out of bounds call is going
to end up the Nicks and the Spurs under two
minutes left to go. It is the Knicks with the
one to eighteen one lead. They would retain possession, and
(01:04):
it well looks like it's gonna wind up being Spurs
basketball because it looks like it goes off of Josh
Hart's middle finger. So I think the Spurs are gonna
get this coming out of the time out, But a
lot of work to do for San Antonio. They're down
eight in this championship game with a minute forty five
left to go. Ogiano Nobi's got twenty eight, Jalen Brunton's
(01:24):
got twenty five. Meanwhile Wemby off the bench eighteen and six.
You have seven players in double figures for the Spurs,
which is about what you would think with a team
this young and this deep in this talented.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Good balance, no question about it. For Victor Wembanyama playing
nearly half the game, he's at twenty three minutes on
the night. So always you know, the questions as to
how much they're putting game because again, this game doesn't
count in the standings, right, there's extra money on.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
The line, it doesn't count. Championship. All of that's championship.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Stupid.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
They may as well, there's a championship, but doesn't count
towards every think. I do know they just haven't. They
have whatever the E Cup they're gonna give to the
winning team. But if the Knicks win, they hand them
the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Okay, take this, take this now you won the surprise?
Yeah good, you gotta write it.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Season's over, so again, we didn't even get to Christmas.
Still a ways to go. We'll have more in this
game coming up in a few minutes. Richis is gonna
stop by. What do you got, Frostburg?
Speaker 3 (02:20):
This game's missing one thing. What's it missing?
Speaker 5 (02:22):
The uh camera of outside of Madison Square Garden right
now of them going.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
Watch everybody there watching outside sure card or freezing flipping cabs.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
Over freezing cam. Somebody waking him up, him not knowing
that the next we're even playing the night.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
He would say, what's the Emirates Cup? Is that? Is
that soccer? Did? I? Is that? Do I own a
team that's playing in the Emirates Cup?
Speaker 4 (02:45):
I will say the last soccer tournament my daughter played
in is that MESSI had more people on the sidelines
than you have fans in attendance.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
I don't know about that. I did.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Here's enough people on the sideline. Now you get to fans, okay,
but there's enough people on the sidelines of this game.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
This game looks pretty well attended.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
If you're just talking about like five rows back, you
have enough people, How tight can we make the shot?
And that's kind of where the uh, that's kind of
where the light ends is about five roads in.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
It's like U LA football that we don't want to
see it really bring out the tarps.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
It looks like it's like a night at a comedy club,
is what it looks like. When it's really dull, you
can't see in the back of the and and someone's
heckling the comedian comedy and.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Goes, hey, who's that back there?
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Like you man, do I go where you work and
rock the slurping machine and you shut up?
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Okay? You know, I mean, you know they don't hear that.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Wow, yeah, you disparage the guy working. Actually I actually
heard that once at a comedy club. Somebody said that,
like somebody heckled the car. And now I don't know if.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
It's potentially problematic of number of levels.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Now that I think about it, you know, and I
think about it in retrospect because this is like fifteen
twenty years ago, I'm like, oh, I wonder if that
was set up, like it's set up for a laugh
where you know, someone says something, you know, yelled you
suck whatever it was the guy, Hey, do I come
with show up at your work and rock the slurpy machine?
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Can you let me do my thing?
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Everybody laugh a okay, So I wonder, but I mean
that's that's kind of what it looks like. It's really blue,
like it's it's a really blue light on everything. It's
very it looks real. It looks kind of sexy. It's
kind of like, hey, blue Light District.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah we get that, we're here. Yeah, things kind of sexy.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
See I was thinking Kmart Blue Light Special back in
the day. Oh yeah, that could be that as well.
In other words, it doesn't feel huge. I mean, they
didn't even dress up the court for this damn thing.
All they did was put a trophy in the middle
of it. Where's my lasers? Where's my fire? Well, it's
where's my different layering effects? Where are these Simpsons characters
or whatever?
Speaker 3 (04:39):
They else?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
They can't because it's Vegas and there's an event at
midnight that they have to run after this. I think
the Blue Man Group is showing up and they're actually
gonna ride dragons, so they can't go crazy with it
because they need they need the court at.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
Midnight, or it's a foam party or something. I mean,
there's a lot of the ways can go all silly.
String is everyone Spike it Lee showed up? Yeah, what
are your super fans? The nine thousand people that claim
to be at least he showed up.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
And I can tell you right now might look. We'll
get back into the Giants and what they could be
drafting Jeremiah Love number one overall in the second. But
I am tasting the cup right now. I am ready
to sip from the cup. Thirty five seconds left to go.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
What have you missed?
Speaker 1 (05:21):
A lot of misshots in the last thirty seconds. The
Knicks are shooting free throws. It's a one nineteen to
one to ten lead, and the Knicks are ready to
party on the sideline.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
I don't know about in.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
The crowd, but on the court and on television, it
has a late playoff atmosphere. That's kind of what it
is because you watch these teams play and you can
tell how bad they want it. You can tell how
bad the Spurs wanted this game, how bad the Knicks
wanted this game, and the way they are reacting to this. Yes,
the money is a big thing, but hey, NBA, it's
(05:56):
a cup, it's a championship, and it's gonna wind up
being the first Jalen br Knicks championship. As the Knicks
dribble out the last ten seconds on the clock, The
New York Knicks are e Cup champions. Give them malari
O'Brian trophy, give them everything they need. They are the champs.
Making one championship for Jalen Brunson. Give me that we
(06:18):
are the champions. Alex Tice shirt, give me that. This
may be the only championship I ever get. The jam right,
hang on a second, this may be the only championship
I ever get to celebrate. Real in twelve thirteen years
on the show, whatever it is, you're never gonna get
to celebrate something else real.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Give me that.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
You give me that we are the champions. Re Emrick's Cup,
NBA Champions. I watch it on television. It is real,
and it is spectacular.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Jason's my only championship'm ever gonna get. So let's look
at the Spurs. Oh they're so despondent. Wemby and Steph Castle.
Oh they had they played like Yeoman's work. Oh but
look at the Knicks. Ah, there's confetti all over the court.
Mike Harmon, Jalen Brunson pulling off his shirt. Josh Hart
looks like he just won a title because he did. Again,
where's champions? Oh?
Speaker 3 (07:04):
You know you know there's Pirate Steve at Pirate Steve Hen.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Roll out the Uh excitement of the do you want
these in small chip denominations or big ones? As you
go to the table, Uh, do you have to ask
in the final seconds? The ability to dribble out the clock?
Josh Hart decided to take the two points. There are
any significance to any of.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
That you were just talking over? Yeah, the Knicks are
e cup wear. That just picture the Knicks partying. They're
all counting the money they won in this. Do you
think all the players came off the bench, walked up
to Adam Silver, put their hands out, said you where's
(07:48):
the money?
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Where's the money? Need the money right now?
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Jalen Brunson's first title, more titles than Patrick Ewing.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Well, I mean you got Mike Brown, who's the king
of the Emirates Cup right, and he's got a great
record career.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Hey, that is officially the first time that song's ever
been played in Vain.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
No, it's it's.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
A champions I'm celebrating the hell out of this because
it's the only one I'm going.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
To ever get.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
There a trophy, Yes, how big is it? It's here,
It's the biggest trophy you've ever seen. You gotta find
your wins. Yeah right, they're gonna drive it. You ever
see an escalating person? Yeah, twice as big spinners, twice
as big as that.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Yeah, guys get that. Guys get to wear it around
their neck as a as A as A as a
huge trophy. It's gonna be the paradees Monday.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Oh yeah, no parades right Friday, right right after this,
they go right, it's like Frosty. They walk downtown, they
leave the arena and they just play thump and he
thump thump, thumping in the Knicks.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Walked out of the Cup trophy. We do the cool
version of that one too.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Yeah, e Cup Champions.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Yeah, I mean, look, it's the find your Wins. No,
it's done before Christmas. The game doesn't count in the standings,
but everybody gets a nice bonus. Jalen Brunson gets to
deliver on that Q and A from yesterday. I'm sure
that that reporter will now ask, well, what cut of
your money did you give away? And I'm sure he'll
(09:19):
be thrilled at that question. But all of it to say,
you know, it's a fun game. To your point on
the sideline, a lot of anticipation. Final minute, both sidelines,
everybody was up and standing with every possession, every misshot
by the Spurs because the lid was on the basket.
Wemby made those couple of three point shots, stepping bags
like oh, we got something, and then the Knicks close
(09:41):
him out in grand fashion. Question about Michael Bridges though,
so he wasn't available and on the broadcast they were
speculating that there.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Might be something amiss there, so we'll keep an eye on. Yeah, look,
I told you he was invisible the first half of
this game. I wind up playing thirty three minutes of
the night. One of my best friends were coaching there
for a long time. We hang out all the time.
He's a big Spurs fan. He's from sand he's from
San Antonio. Are a big Spurs fan much so he
can represent them so much trash talk we've had the
(10:10):
last couple of days here he's.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Sending He sent me trash talk over the apples.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Oh yeah, well, when are we ever gonna get to
do nick Spurs trash talk that's not twenty five years
old from the nineteen ninety nine championship. When are we
ever going to get to celebrate championships. It's a big thing.
So he sent me a picture of himself a day
ago wearing a Spurs T shirt giving me the middle finger. Okay,
so during the game, while the Knicks are rolling, I'm
sending him that picture back all the time, and I'm
(10:36):
just I'm amplifying the middle finger every single time. He
just sent me back a text and said, this is
the worst day of my entire life.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (10:46):
See, I would report you for spam. Yeah, buddy, spanning
his phone.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Look at the guy that got the red carpet out.
Adam Silver's about to stand up. Look how excited stan
Van Gunny looks salty. Yeah, Sandman Gunn. He's like, can
we go home? Now?
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Okay, can we go home? It's it's almost Christmas.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
We've been in Vegas for several days. Now, can we
go after forty eight hours?
Speaker 1 (11:04):
I'm done. I'm I'm seventy years old. I need to
here we go. I'm done with this game. It was
a great game, was entertaining games. Look both of these teams.
To say about both these teams right now, it's like
they're bringing in the Emirate Cup. The Emirates cabin crew
is bringing in the Emirates Cup for the New York
next Jenally Bruns. You just go up and just grab
it out of Adam Silver's hand. Don't even wait for it,
just grab it, hold it up.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Kind of vile things. Do you think happened to that together? Yeah, no,
it's not.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
It's a no, it's it's it's they're gonna pick it
up and Legos the top falls out is shut out?
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Would be fun? Actually this is part of isn't cake man? Well?
Speaker 1 (11:42):
They pick it up in like the top falls like,
Oh wow, that's a h like they got kids from
a YMCA here for the for the party. Look, the
thing is for both of these teams, right, there really
is only one winner and one loser. But uh, nothing
has changed for the Spurs. As I said preseason law
shot NBA title pick, right, I said, the Pistons in
(12:02):
the East and the Spurs in the West, because eventually
Wenby's going to become the best player in the league.
It's happening this year. You see how good and deep
the Spurs are. I feel great about that pick. I
feel great about the Pistons. But the Knicks have figured
out their early season problems. They needed something like this.
They needed some sort of evidence that what we're doing
is working and we have moved past the Tom Thibodeaux era,
(12:26):
that there's no remnants of well, you know, under TIBs
we did this now you could see that things were
moving that well. And when they put Josh Hart in
the starting lineup, the Knicks really took off.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
They need a little bit of time.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Things were a little bit more difficult than it was
expected early on for them, But the Knicks needed something
like this to show. Yes, not that it's about hey,
you got to get confidence, but hey, we want to
show that this new direction, this controversial new direction that
we stepped in, it is working. And winning the Emirates Cup,
beating the Spurs who just beat the Oklahoma City Thunder again,
it's like winning the Larry O'Brien Trophy. This shows you
(12:58):
that what the Knicks are doing and where they are
right now. Yeah, they're the biggest, baddest guys on the
block in the Eastern College. Look at you, you all excited
on December sixteenth. It's good for you. That's what we got.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
Shows tonight Thunder of the favorite for the title Nuggets.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Not anymore, not anymore, nixt are the new favorites now.
Knicks are even money to win the title. Week ago
you were trading everybody away for spare parts plus thirteen hundred.
They are just slightly ahead of the Cavaliers, behind the
thunder Nuggets and the Rockets at twelve to one. Exit
out about a Fresca exit, swollen dome. The Knicks are
(13:34):
your Emirate Cup champions. Coming up next, FS one Insider
Extraordinary Rick Bucker stops by. We'll have more on this game.
Crazy stories out of the NBA today involving Steph and

For Patrick Ewing, Phil Jackson, Charles Oakley, Trent Tucker, Bernard King,
Ray Williams, and Dick Barnett. The New York Knicks are
on top of the basketball world once again, maybe the
greatest team to ever play this sport. I'm jim NANTZ
enjoy this rollout.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I think you need to redo it. I don't think
Oakley gets I think he's X size.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
We love everybody, now, we love that the Knicks of
the champs.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
I mean, we are not a show of hate. We're
a show about positivity and inclusion.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
We love everybody. Jo right, Josh Hart is taking pictures
with fans.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Now, wait, they let all those people from the five rowsip?
Speaker 3 (15:20):
I mean I really well, yeah, I think you come
to the game, you get a picture. Is that part
of the ticket package? Yeah? And wait, so I sit.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
In the first five rows, I'm guaranteed to get a
picture taken with a player.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
A pit A start to choose the player.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
The Knicks are your Emirates Cup Champions. They beat the
Spurs one twenty four to one thirteen. Jalen Brunson is
your MVP. I am waiting for this trophy to be
here in this studio, hot to make it happen, the
e Cup in the studio. You may as well give
the Knicks to Lari O'Brian trophy as well. It's that
(15:57):
big a deal. It's Jalen Brunson's first Knicks champion chip
joining us now in the hotline to break it all down.
Nobody better. And I say this, He's looking at his
clock right now, going I can't believe I agreed to this.
After the next one. It is one insider extraordinary. Check
out the On the Ball podcast as well. It is
Rick Buker. He is on Twitter at Rick Buker.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
Rick.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
I mean, I know the words you can use for
the greatest achievement in basketball history. The Knicks, yep, are
your Emirates Cup champions.
Speaker 7 (16:26):
Here's the question. Here's the question I have is when
they bring the Emirates Cup by the studio and they
give you your I don't know what do you get? Twenty
four forty eight hours with it like they do with
the Stanley cup. Huh, where are you taking it and
what are you consuming from it?
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Well, I'll take it to McDonald's. I have a normal
day with it, Rick. I take it to McDonald's, I'd
go get coffee. I take it to Burger King, I'd
go get coffee again. I would take it to my
daughter's school so she could see it and show it
off to all her classmates, and they bring it to
the studio. I'm a simple guy, Rick, I'm enjoying my day.
I'm making a normal day like everything else.
Speaker 7 (17:05):
We're drinking coffee. We're drinking bad coffee out of the
Emirates cup.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Yeah Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
We're making a mocha frappuccino from Mcdonald're pouring that thing
and drinking it.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Very nice, very nice.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Okay. See.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
I immediately trying to figure out how many Knicks fans
are in the Greater LA area. Rick and I try
to see how many won't pay for a picture with
the Emirates Cup to make some money for myself for
this holiday season. Is there is.
Speaker 7 (17:29):
There actually an Emirates cup or is it like one
of those? Is it like one of those red Dixie cups.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
That they have, you know at parties, when you have
a keg, When you have.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
A kegger, it's it's an Emirates, it's a cup, and
it's it's it's four poles that hold up a cup.
I'm worried that if you hold it the wrong way,
like the cup falls out and they'd have to just
put it back in. So I'm kind of worried about that,
but so far that has not happened. You're nice serving book.
Karl Anthony Towns has held it up pretty well so far.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
In any way, any shape or form, it's going to
hold a frappuccino for you.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
So yes, yes it will right now.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Now to get to this right for both of these
teams tonight, it's weird to say this right. It is
an E Cup, it's a championship night, and you can
tell both sides really wanted it. Watching the game, you
could tell the Spurs wanted the Knicks wanted it. It
had a late playoff kind of feel. I mean, maybe
not in the arena because it's in Vegas, but watching them,
not that you needed it, but I feel like the
(18:21):
Knicks sort of they feel a lot better about themselves
that the changes they made and what they've done so far,
now they feel like, hey, we're building on something. What
we're doing is working. Because the validation of the Emirates
Cup says, hey, getting you know, moving on from TIBs
because that was still hanging on and Mike Brown's way
or the guy's going to be able to find a
way to coalesce together, and the Knicks are. You know.
(18:44):
That's why this is so valuable because now they can
point to this and say, yeah, what we're doing is
work and we can do it. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (18:50):
And I would say that a big part of their
success in this game was their depth. I mean, the
big turn was at the beginning of the fourth quarter
and it was led by Mitchell Robinson and Jordan Clarkson,
just like we all expected.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
And I was thinking it couldn't help. But I'm watching
it and I'm thinking, uh.
Speaker 7 (19:13):
You know, probably one or both would not be playing
if Timms was still running the show. So I think that, Yeah,
I think it is. It's it's encouraging. I don't want
to put too much on it.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
But it's certainly it gives reason reason for.
Speaker 7 (19:29):
Guys to believe that maybe the changes that Mike Brown
has has instituted and the sacrifices that he's asked guys
to make.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
That they are moving them certainly in the right direction.
So yeah, it's it's all positive.
Speaker 7 (19:48):
And on the flip side, I think it's really great
experience for the San Antonio Spurs. Are really young team
to play in competition like this, which I don't know,
as you said, I don't know that it's full on
playoff atmosphere, being played in a neutral site and the
NBA Cup not having all the meaning that the playoff
(20:09):
games do, but but still playing in a you know,
a make or break sort of format, winner go home.
I think that I think that's a it's going to
serve the San Antonio Spurs very well.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Down the stretch.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Yeah, we we talked a lot about at the start
of the show, Rick, just in terms of how do
you make this thing a bigger deal and get some
more juice for it. We talked about the blue lighting
like you're in a comedy club or in a dark
match that they had during the COVID run of Hey,
we can't show that there's nobody at this thing, so
just trying to juice it beyond you know Nicks Van
(20:43):
Smith people are already putting over unders on how much
money he spends on E Cup merch right right right.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
You're gonna get cut merch, right you get you get
E cup merch sent to you, So just send.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
It to me.
Speaker 7 (20:56):
Know, if we don't, if we don't get if we
don't get t shirts.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
If we don't get shirts out of this, I'm going
to be very disappointed.
Speaker 4 (21:03):
But just trying to goose this a little bit, Rick,
as we look at it, a good, good experience. Jason
gets a title in his lifetime, so he's excited about that.
But the grand scale, trying to add some gravitas to
this because I mean, this game doesn't count in the standings.
It's gonna count, and the wear and tear on their bodies,
(21:24):
and yes, they got nice bonuses for it, but down
the stretch, I mean, this is another game towards those
sixty five for awards, but also just in terms of
the wear and.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
Tear, because this was a hotly contested game down the stretch.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
Yeah, So are you talking about the wear and tear
from playing in the game. Are you talking about the
wear and tear from being in Vegas for a well
I think I.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
Think both are going to have an effect.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
I don't know how big your pie chart, you know
which side is bigger. I mean the media members covering
it are even worse because they've been there for five days.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
Stan Van Gundy looked like he wanted to be released.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, truck.
Speaker 7 (22:00):
When you see guys at Summer League, like after the
first forty eight seventy two hours, everybody's begging to get
out of there.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
I've always said this about Vegas.
Speaker 7 (22:07):
The idea of Vegas is so much better than the
reality of Vegas.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Every time I go to Summer League, I'm like, man,
I'm going to go to Vegas. I'm going to let
Vegas for the Summer League. And as soon as I
touch down, I'm like, gosh, darn it, I'm in Vegas
for Summer League. Where can I go? It's almost immediate
as soon as I hit hit the ground. It's crazy.
But yeah, no, I don't even know where we were
(22:33):
at this point. We went so far afield.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
You're in Vegas now, sunny Wow. When I went to
Vegas last time and what happened in But the thing
is like, for this this event as a whole, as
you can see overall it works, right, it's an exciting thing.
It needs some tweaks, and you know, I think maybe
if you took a break from the season and just
played E Cup games for a two to three week period,
(22:59):
that might help a little bit, if you, you know,
anted up a little bit more and just said, hey,
you know, twenty games in the regular season, we stop.
Now we have the E Cup. Then you resume it.
Like certain things you need to do. You need to
have the games at the higher seeded team's place because
you're always going to get a great atmosphere. You know,
the fans are going to show up, they're going to
sell out the place. It's not going to be where
(23:19):
you have a dim arena in Vegas where after five
rows up, we have to turn the lights off because
we don't watch you to see who's not there. So
it works, and it's it's a great idea, and now
it's like, okay, how do we make it even better?
I kind of feel like that's where this whole Emirates
Cup is at.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
Yeah, I think there's a couple of things. One, I
love the idea of ultimately.
Speaker 7 (23:39):
Going to where you have basketball year round, and if
you if you had a break in the season, and
you had this tournament, and then you gave gave teams
a little bit of rest at the beginning and the
end of it, and it would really heighten what this
meant with within the season and the playoffs as a whole,
(23:59):
and what you would just do as you would extend
the season.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
So rather than having the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (24:03):
In June, you have or you have the finals in
July and the and the draft at the end of July,
and then uh, summer League in August, and you know,
September you start dialing up for training.
Speaker 2 (24:18):
Camp again, and there really is there is no break
to the basketball. And I don't know that that would
necessarily be.
Speaker 7 (24:24):
A bad thing because you're talking about different elements.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
Obviously, the veteran guys. The guys are going to be
playing in the in.
Speaker 7 (24:30):
The Cup and in the regular season, in the playoffs,
aren't going to be playing in summer league, so uh,
and you're going to get some rest within the season.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Uh. And and with some of the injuries that we're
dealing with, I think.
Speaker 7 (24:43):
That that that could potentially be.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
A positive, especially because you know there's always to.
Speaker 7 (24:49):
Talk about you got to reduce the season to you
got to reduce games, and.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
The reality is that's just not going.
Speaker 7 (24:55):
To happen because nobody wants to give back the money.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
If you if you said, okay, we can play.
Speaker 7 (24:59):
Sixty five games, but everybody is you're the Salarridge going
to come down ten percent or fifteen percent.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
And everybody like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa whoa.
Speaker 7 (25:08):
No, I'll grind through an eighty two game season to
keep the money.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
Where it is.
Speaker 7 (25:14):
So I like the idea, and I also just I
think there has to be a little bit There has
to be a little bit more at stake in terms
of and I don't know what you make it, you know,
something attached to the playoffs, something attached to the postseason,
something attached to maybe seeding in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
Haven't I haven't thought it through. I have thought.
Speaker 7 (25:36):
About, like, how do you make the game? How do
you just make it overall more competitive? Because I've been
I've been watching a lot of EuroLeague lately, and like
every game is huge, and the players play hard every
game and it's meaningful and it's not just because they
play fewer games, but all of these guys are playing
(25:57):
poor contracts on on a year to year basis, you
have very short term contracts, and so I think a
combination of peering it the way.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
That you have in soccer. I was I was thinking, like,
how do.
Speaker 7 (26:12):
You make how do you make it more competitive, and
how do you completely end the tanking? And I think
if you tiered it and you had like you've got
to finish in a certain seating, if you've got thirty teams,
you've got to finish in the top twenty, or you're
playing in a second division and you have no hope
(26:33):
of playing for a championship the next year. I think
that all of that would change the way that every
game is approached because we are at a place now
where there's just so many options, there's so many entertainment
options that for the NBA to have games that don't
(26:54):
matter is just it's it's damaging to the the brand overall.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Well, Ricky come to the right place because the beginning
of the show, I had an idea and I think
this is gonna work, and it's gonna say tell me
what you think You're ready? Okay the two teams.
Speaker 7 (27:12):
Ready is a relative term for any time you're coming
with an idea.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
Yeah, weary, you're gonna lie.
Speaker 7 (27:18):
I'm about as ready as I could possibly be.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
You ask, I give you answers.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
You make it to the championship game in the Emirates Cup,
the loser is guaranteed a playoff spot. The winner is
guaranteed a top six finish. You go buy your record,
and let's say your record is worse than six, you
finish sixth. If you finish fourth or third, you finish
your normal spot. But no matter what, if you win
the Cup, you are guaranteed to be no lower than six.
(27:47):
If you're the other championship team, you're guaranteed in the playoffs.
Now you could be in the playing round as well,
depending on where your record is, but you're guaranteed to
be in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
That's you do for the teams that make it to the.
Speaker 7 (27:57):
Championship, And it doesn't matter what your regular regular season record.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
Is, doesn't matter if you win the Cup.
Speaker 7 (28:04):
You win the Cup, you're essentially guaranteed a playoffs guarantee.
Speaker 4 (28:09):
Cuba Tournament the wind rug as you get hit, you
could be sub five hundred anymore.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
At the back end of the bracket. Winners guaranteed no
lower than six. The losing team is guaranteed to at
least make it into the play and round, and if
you have a great record, obviously you're in the playoffs.
But just you never know what could happen in the
second half of the season with injuries and different things.
But hey, you got to have some kind of spoils
for winning the E Cup. It's a big deal. It's
kind of like winning the Larry O'Brien Trophy. It's Jalen
(28:34):
Brunson's first championship. So there you go. That's how you
make it a little bit more stakes for everybody involved.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
It'll never happen, but it is an interesting thought.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
Well you mean Jalen Brunson's next championship or the playoff?
Speaker 7 (28:47):
The playoff thing, it's I mean, it is an interesting thought.
And I think we're thinking along the same lines in
terms of you want something meaning, really meaningful, where you go, oh, man,
like we should go try to win this, I mean,
and that that would do it. I just.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
What I do.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
What I don't know is what kind of impact.
Speaker 7 (29:12):
That has on the meaning of the regular season games
for that team. Then, so in a big picture, you
have more teams vying for the NBA Cup with everything
that they that that that they have. On the other hand,
the team that wins the Cup, like, we don't have
to do anything.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
For the rest of the year if we don't want.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Yeah, so I got baseball after the eighty strike, right
if you won the first half.
Speaker 7 (29:38):
Yeah, and now I'm understanding why Jason.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
Came up with this and why I got that.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Well he kept looking at the sideline to make sure
that they didn't give Jalen Brunson accidentally the Larry O'Brien
right now, because he'd be like, I don't.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Have to give this back. We're the champs. That's it.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Basically then the champs, I mean basically they're already the champs.
Doesn't matter.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
See.
Speaker 7 (30:00):
See this is why you can't give good things to
a New York Nick fan.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
You just can't.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
They did actually give him.
Speaker 7 (30:07):
You give him an inch and they take forty miles.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
Yeah that's right. Come on, man, Spike Lee is on
the set right now. It's fantastic, Rick, this is it.
This may be the only championship I ever get to celebrate.
This is the only one.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Yeah, which is fine, So relish this, but.
Speaker 7 (30:27):
Don't like immediately go to and we're getting the Larry O'Brien.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Oh. Two trophies for Jalen brunts in this NBA season,
actually three, the Emirates Cup, the MVP Trophy and the
Larry O'Brien Trophy. Three trophies for Jalen Brunson. And he's
on Twitter at Reck Buker. That is at Rick Buker.
Rick is always buddy, appreciate it, my friend. We'll talk
(30:51):
to you. Have a great night.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Trappaccinos, Yo share Rick.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
Spike Lee is sitting in Dirk Noovitch's chair right now.
How about that?
Speaker 1 (31:01):
And it looks really awkward because you know, everybody is
really tall and he isn't. And Dirk is standing behind
spike Lee and Dirk looks like he's eleven feet tall,
like that.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
Is not John Cena.
Speaker 1 (31:14):
Taylor Rooks is sitting to his right. She looks like
she's eight feet tall. Relative it is a Knicks championship.
And about that again, the first of three trophies for
Jalen Brunson this season. Time now to find out what's
trending in the wide world of sports. Who had the
Knicks laying the points. It's Isaac Lohenkron.
Speaker 8 (31:32):
Indeed, that is our dominant story Indeed, Jason and Mike
and the NBA Cup Championship game in Vegas. The New
York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs one twenty four
to one thirteen, and guys, here was the call as
the final seconds ticked away, the Knicks dribble.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
Out the last ten.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
The New York Knicks are key Cup champions.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
Give them the Larry O'Brien trophy, give them that everything
they need.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
They are the champs, making one championship for Jalen Brunson.
Speaker 8 (32:04):
It's right up there with Marv Albert calling Willis Reed
in Game seven, as far as i'm.
Speaker 1 (32:09):
He was standing up in the studio and the Knicks
with yet another championship here years after the last time
they lost to the Spurs because they couldn't win more
than one game with Patrick ewing out with.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
A torn achilles. I'm going back to nineteen ninety nine.
Speaker 8 (32:26):
Hey, Latrell Spreewell was awesome in Game five of that series,
thirty five points dueling with Tim Duncan. You had Charlie
Ward throwing that last second in bounds pass.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
He missed that layup at the very end. Latrell spree Well, yeah.
Speaker 8 (32:39):
They get their revenge tonight over the Spurs. Spurs actually
led this game ninety four eighty nine after three quarters,
but the Knicks outscored him of the fourth quarter thirty
five to nineteen. Og Nanobi led the next with twenty
eight points. No word yet on whether New York City
plans to have a ticker tape parade to celebrate the
Knicks Cup triumph. However, it is expected that New York
(33:01):
City Rats will be parading across subway platforms in celebration.
Speaker 1 (33:05):
Already out Dan Dat to stop trains in every direction
like it's a taking a fellow one.
Speaker 8 (33:09):
Two three the Rats big basketball fans. Apparently Finally, in
college football, Notre Dame junior running back Jeremiah Love announced
on Instagram this evening that he is declaring for the
NFL Draft, coming off a season that saw himbe a
Heisman Trophy finalist after running for nearly fourteen hundred yards
with eighteen rushing touchdowns. Guys, back to you, thanks.

One Shining Moment?
Speaker 1 (34:28):
All night?
Speaker 3 (34:29):
Why?
Speaker 5 (34:29):
Who?
Speaker 3 (34:29):
All night?
Speaker 6 (34:30):
What?
Speaker 1 (34:31):
Do you have a holiday version of One Shining Moment?
Holiday Holiday holiday version of One Shining Moment?
Speaker 3 (34:36):
All right? You already discussed this hollow.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
It's a basketball would be championship tyshirt teers, so it
doesn't count.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
How long will it take you to do that faster
than it took the Knicks to win a championship? Wow?
Well it didn't take him very long. He long time.
He come chance right before God?
Speaker 1 (34:50):
No, no, No, but seven nineteen seventy three, I saw, I
saw it.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
They were showing it, and I wait a minute, I
wait a minute. You can't.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
They don't need to show it for us to know that.
You can't go back to before these guys were alive.
You go back to beginning of this year.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
First.
Speaker 4 (35:01):
But they said they big stood out of the crates.
Three tight shirts, always talked about as being in the crates.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
So here you go, three trophies for Jalen Brunson, Emirates Cup, MVP,
Larry O'Brien.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
You realize he's three three hundred to one right now. Yeah,
to win all three, No, to win the MVP. Oh,
that's what coming way down after tonight. He's already won
an MVP, won the Emirates Cup MVP. That's not part
of the voting.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
He's got.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
That's five to that's four trophies, Emirts Cup Trophy, Emerts Cup, MVP,
NBA MVP, Larry O'Brien Trophy.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
As of this morning, he is tied with Mitchell and
Jalen Brown at three hundred to one, behind Maxi, Wembin,
Yama Cunningham, Donchez, Jokic, and SGA and Brownie.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
Yeah, but now, but now it's gonna be uh, it's
got to change after the uh after the win tonight.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
Well, I mean the game doesn't count in the standings,
so order the stats counts, it does nothing.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
Positive vibes don't win.
Speaker 4 (35:57):
I mean, they had some great comments talking about their
relationship with coach brown in the post game, Josh Hart
and Jalen Bronson with some great human moments just saying, hey,
he came to want to know us as guys, so
driving hundreds of miles to just come meet and hang
out with us to talk to us about who we
are and what our expectations were, and to meet us
(36:20):
on that level, which helped.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
So, Yeah, a lot of positivity.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
The meme of Josh Hart looking at the bench and
making the money sign, Yeah, got it going over big here.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
Now I'm gonna ask a serious question here for a second, Yeah,
because it is here now, just to get to get
serious about this.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
For not serious about how good the Knicks, but let
me just ask you this very serious. Okay, not that
much better. The fries at McDonald's are way better than
any any players. Yes they are. Are we revisiting that again? No, Tysher.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
Tyscher doesn't know how to deal with NBA Championship night.
He does, He's this is weird all over the place.
I know, freaking out a little bit. Jason, what if
your teams has won something? I don't know how to
re What do I do with my hands? It's been
it's been thirteen years. Your team's just sucking out today.
You see that Brunson and Heart and Towns all doing
(37:11):
interviews now, they're all wearing Emirates Cup hats, Championship hats.
I got the T shirts out there, serious question. I
can get E Cup Championship gear, wear it and it
not be too cringey?
Speaker 7 (37:24):
Right?
Speaker 3 (37:25):
Yeah? Like or is that?
Speaker 1 (37:27):
Like, dude, you can't you wear an Emirates Cup Championship
shirt like it's still it.
Speaker 4 (37:30):
I've been recognized as a title. Yeah, he played a tournament. Yeah,
players received my huge ass bonuses off of this. We're
talking hundreds of thousands of dollars post tags. They're gonna
take care of their people, which is cool, and you
could be part of that.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Okay, So it's not because I was worried that it's
gonna be h Come on, man, really, but here's.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
The thing if I like what you're wearing a Knick's sweatshirt. Now, yeah,
so you'd already bought into just the concept of this
team has sucked for as long as I've been alive.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
This is the only good. No, But that's the point.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
I mean, really, think about the last since I've known you,
how many checks I've had Syracuse in the Final four twice?
Speaker 3 (38:11):
You watch, right, that's losing the World Series. Met's lost
in the World Series.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
And here's the next en scene, and and here's the
Nixt winning the Oh, Syracuse won the Players Tournament the
yeah you know old players. Yeah, I mean, Jelly should
have gotten at least an honorable mention for the Heisman.
Those those are my achievements. But that's what you've got.
That's that's twelve years of a cheat or luck of achievements.
(38:36):
Outside of Zoe being born, this is the greatest night
of your life.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
Oh yeah, well, let's see heng go Zoe being born. Yeah?
Is this better than Zoe?
Speaker 1 (38:45):
No?
Speaker 3 (38:45):
No, no, no, Zoe.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
Zoey was great, He's always great. It was her birthday,
the honest, and she's probably listening. So I'm gonna say it,
Zoe Nixt tonight. So I'm gonna say it, Zoe, and
then the nixt to night. Well, I don't want to.
I don't want it to be where I I don't.
This is it like I go anywhere. There's got to
be a little bit of room to go up, like
when Brunson wins the up. But it's as win the
(39:06):
NBA five, when they beat the thunder and seven to
win the NBA five. Ye, it's as of the sixteenth
of December. The the calendar will flip here in about
eight minutes in the East Coast, and the Knicks celebrating
into the night.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
Got to imagine.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
I mean, the bars are open late, a lot of
celebrations through the frosty streets of New York.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
But but I can wear it. That's not what It's
not like. It's what you find your wins. Yeah, And
I know.
Speaker 4 (39:32):
And in the end, if you're worried about what other
people think of what you're wearing, you've lost.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
That's the thing is I gotta be cool, though, I
gotta be cool. I can't. I can't not in your
own head. Yeah, I know.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
It's like like people are just looking at you and
the orange thin are gonna think you're uncool any cool?
So what what it actually says on there doesn't matter.
This is a KNICKX the game hoodie. It's a dumpster.
This is this is special. Listen, I could pull off orange.
Orange is tough color to pull off. It's very, very difficult.
Speaker 5 (39:57):
If they'd lost, would you have left that out for
someone to how many boxes sent to Africa? Would you
have broken into how they lost?
Speaker 1 (40:05):
Oh but the Knicks e cup that Now that the
Spurs are going to send out I think the Spurs
won it. Sure, sure they think Spurs are champions, Spurs
or Ecup champions. Now I'm glad because, like I said,
I got to be able to be cool when I
wear care a look.
Speaker 3 (40:18):
At that guy. Nothing about a Knick sweater is coolhka
you kidding? Come on, The Knicks are cool. The Knicks
have become cool in the last few years, and your
definition of cool is way different.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
Well, I could use the code prancer to get some
discount on shipping, but for thirty one ninety nine, Actually no,
it's thirty nine ninety nine for an adult.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
The locker room shirt champions right there, you go, already
up and going.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
You got sweatshirts and hats. Yeah, but how long until
it gets delivered? Delivery middle of February. It doesn't say
I want, I can't.
Speaker 4 (40:49):
So we could go to a bootleg place and add
one printed by morning, making your dreams come true the
New York Knicks.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
We'll have more on this.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Another crazy story out of the NBA trade ahead is
an E Cup Championship night here on Fox
