Speaker 5 (00:37):
We are live here in.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
The Fox Sports Radio studios, filling in for Jason and Mike.
The guys will be back Monday. Already span your VJ
Husky in tomorrow night on Friday, and we do Finally,
it's like the meme from Titanic.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Rose spend eighty four years.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
It's been eighty four years, but we have a final
in New Orleans. I'm shocked. I am genuinely stunned. Ole
Miss the thirty nine to thirty four win. I will
try to be as quick as I can here j
mart In explaining this Ole Miss takes a thirty seven
(01:18):
to thirty four lead with six seconds to go. I mean,
there was a lot of that happened before that, but
thirty six what would that be? Thirty six, thirty thirty
seven and thirty four lead with six seconds to go.
They kick the ball off and as our Fox Sports
Radio college football insider Alex Teischer told us, this is
(01:42):
with six seconds left and Georgia up or Old Miss
up three at this point, Okay, all they Ole Miss
has to do is one play and they're done. Georgia
elects to run the ball out of the end zone.
They then throw a later role that trickles out of bounds.
The clock hit zero, Confetti falls on the field, the
(02:07):
refs go to the monitor. One second is left on
the clock. A safety is called to put all Miss
up thirty nine to thirty four because the ball went
out of bounds in the end zone. Okay, so Ole
Miss is up thirty nine thirty four. There is still
a second left on the clock. At that point, Georgia
lines up for what is essentially an on side kick.
(02:28):
I don't even know if you call it an on
sidekick because it was after a safety. Whatever kick, The
ball barely makes it ten yards. There's only one second
left on the clock. Georgia recovers it. Apparently no time
comes off the clock in this situation.
Speaker 5 (02:45):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
If I'm a football casual, I had no idea. I
assumed at least a second would come off after they
touched the ball. Georgia recovers the on side kick again,
trailing thirty nine to thirty four. Ole Miss thinks the
game is over. Pete Gold, the now head coach at
Old Miss, doused with gatorade and it turns out that
no time comes off the clock, so Georgia gets one
(03:08):
play with one second left. They have about twenty five
laterals that result in Gunner Stockton getting the ball back.
After starting to play with the completion the ball is
Stockton ends up getting tackled. The game is now officially over.
Ole Miss thirty nine, Georgia thirty four. The Old Miss Rebels,
(03:29):
along with the Miami Hurricanes, who they will play next
week in the Fiesta Bowl, have advanced to the semi
finals of the College Football Playoff. Obviously, the other game
will be Indiana and uh who am I missing?
Speaker 5 (03:42):
Oregon? Indiana and Oregon?
Speaker 4 (03:44):
So Indiana, Oregon, Ole missch and uh whatever? That's the
final four, but take it where you want. After that
goofy ending and this incredible win.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
For the Old Miss Rebels, I'm an assist an incredible story.
These last two game really just have stories you can't write.
You got Indiana finding its way into being the number
one seed and then just demolishing really the team of
the century in college football so far in terms of
just the program that Saban built and what they had
(04:16):
been for fifteen years. And then you've got this with
a coach his second game as a head coach after
the fiasco with Lane Kiffen, and they come in here
and they beat Georgia, who was my pick to win
it all and who was playing I felt like about
as good as anybody in the country and had everything
(04:37):
going for him. And look they they took shots from
Georgia and still were just better in the end. Trinidad
Chambliss just his story alone, but just what he ended
up doing in this game, well over three hundred yards,
just made every throw that he had to make, they
win the game. It's just outrageous. Immediately saw like forum
(05:01):
comments that were like, well, Miami's going to the national
championship because no, because Old Miss definitely can't stop the run,
and I'm just thinking to myself, I'm like, did you
just watch Ole Miss in Georgia? Like if you want
to count them out, you go right ahead, Like, yeah,
Miami's really good, and Miami may well beat them. I'm
not suggesting that they won't. I'm just saying, if you're
(05:22):
going to actually just pooh pooh this, to borrow Rob
Parker's phrase or his term, you've lost your mind. Man.
There is nobody that needs to be looking past this
Old Miss team, especially when it looks like they're having
more fun playing football now than they were at any
point during the season, especially when they were in afterthought
(05:42):
because of their coaches, drama, their coach.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
You know, let me ask you this, j mart Is,
I want to celebrate Old Miss doing what they're doing.
I keep coming back to obviously an incredible story. It
goes without saying. I do think the biggest story of
this game is the fact that Lane Kiffin is not
on the sidelines. And listen, at this point, he's allowed
(06:07):
to do what he did. He whatever, it's his life, whatever.
But the whole concept of leaving for LSU was that
I want to go to a place where I can
compete for championships.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
And I just go back to what and what I
keep saying.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
You know, I think I've said this on air a
million times, but listen, it's the old Herm Edwards line.
You play to win the game. If you're Lane Kiffin,
you coach your entire career to have a team that
finishes eleven and one in the SEC and is in
the college football player. You play to win the game.
(06:45):
You're going somewhere to do something that you could have accomplished.
Quite literally, it's not like a metaphorical like the pieces
are there and this is there.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
No, No, you literally could have won a national championship
this year.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
So I don't want to make I want to celebrate
the eighty five guys in that locker room. On the field,
I want to celebrate the coaching staff. But that's the
story to me. YEA left to go to a place
to win championships, and you could have won one if
you stuck right where you were.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah, I mean you were already there. Like the whole
goal is to get to the college football playoff and
give yourself a chance. And you had the team and
you end up going somewhere else and they're going to
expect you to go there and win a championship. You
were closer where you were. The program was built in
a direction to where you were much closer really than
what we're seeing at LSU right now. I don't care
(07:33):
what you're going to like what you can look in
the future, and do you sacrifice the present for what
you think might be easier later. I just I was
hoping he would make the other decision, but we kind
of knew better, right I was hoping that he would
see the opportunity not just to win a title this year,
(07:57):
but to be a legend at a school that didn't
have one, like to go there and be the guy.
Like when you think of old Miss football, it's gonna
be synonymous with Lane Kiffin because of what he's done
there over the last half century. You know, he's been
there twenty five years or whatever, coaching and like, no,
he goes and he takes what he thinks are greener pastors,
and look, they may well be. I mean, I have
(08:19):
no idea, but I'm telling you this, this team right
here is two wins away from a national championship, and
if they win it, I don't care how many movies.
How many documentaries are made about it. I'll watch every
single one of them, because it's just it's something that absolutely, honestly,
Lane Kiffen deserves. For them to go win the national
(08:39):
championship without him, it's just that's sad, but it's true.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
It's unbelievable and to your point, and if I can
not make it about Lane Kiffon, even though I do
think that's the biggest story.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
You know, I haven't seen it.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
You know, we're obviously live here, we are live feeling
in for Jason Smith and Mike carm and I haven't
seen what the public's reaction is. I'm sorry if you
beat Georgia in the manner that you did Trinidad Chambliss
with respect, by the way, you know, I know that
we're all high on the Miami uh you know the
Miami vibes right now. I'm sorry. I understand what Mario
(09:15):
Christaball has done with that team. Their defensive front as
good as it is, George, it's got a pretty good
defensive front too, Like yes, and I don't I know,
you're just kind of paraphrasing what some people are saying
on a message board or whatever. But if if you
don't think that team can go on a neutral field
and beat Georgia, then I'm sorry.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
I just I don't know.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
If you don't think you can go on to a
neutral field and beat.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Miami, that's after them beating Georgia. Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
I actually don't understand that logic at all. I mean, listen,
everyone's title to their opinion. I just think it's a
bad opinion. If you can beat Georgia in the manner
that you just did, I think you know, you got
as good a shot as anybody to beat beat Miami,
and you're potentially playing for a national championship, and just
it is an increasing Independent of how dumb I think
Lane Kiffin is, this is also an incredible story for
(10:03):
the guys that are actually still in Oxford.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Oh yeah, one hundred per I mean, I uh, I
know that. You know, you miss out on the Carson
Beck That's true revenge game. You miss out on that storyline.
Now I'm good with that because I didn't want to
listen to that for the next week. Sure, like I
want to see this football game because I think it's
gonna be an awesome football game because there's a ton
(10:25):
of athletes. I want to see what Miami's defense can
do against Chambliss, who's certainly gonna be able to move
around and get some things going. But I mean, it's
gonna be a whale of a football game. It's gonna
be awesome. But like, how can you not root for this?
You've got two teams, You've got the Indian stories incredible,
but and it's just the wrong year for them for
me because I got to pull for Old Miss to
(10:47):
win the whole thing, like even before this game, but
really going into the playoff, when you just looked at
it, it was just like, dude, man, they deserve this. They've
done everything right and they've been an afterthought because of
what's happened outside of their control. So to watch Trenidad
Chambliss show up and do this against Georgia, it's just
(11:10):
like he he earned this, man, He's had to fight
for everything he has and to go out there on
this stage and do it to that team in this
manner is just it's phenomenal. It really is.
Speaker 5 (11:24):
It really is.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Old Miss.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
With the thirty nine to thirty four win, they advanced
to play Miami. Now the other semi final Indiana and
Oregon Old Miss the last SEC team standing too. I mean, listen,
I'm not here to get into the SEC versus everybody
else debate, but like, who would have thought that that
would be the case in the middle of the season,
(11:47):
the end of the season, the day lean Kiff and
left the whatever.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
Yet here we are Old.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Miss in the semifinals. Tell you what, Jmart, why don't
we come back? When we do, we'll kind of put
a bow, not put a bow, but we'll reset and
recap a lot of the things that we either have
you know, have not talked about or.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Just yeah I did even gotten Ohio State at all.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
Le'll tell you what, Why don't we talk Ohio State next?
Because that game went final? Ole Miss will now play Miami.
Of course, Miami coming off the win against Ohio State
on New Year's Eve Rocket New Year's Eve not with
Ryan Seacrest but with Ryan Day did not go well
for the Buck guys. We'll come back and discuss that
next air Torus Jason Morriin in for Jason Smith and

(13:46):
Mike Harmon, who will be back on Monday. All four
college football quarterfinals are done, setting up semi finals where
we will have Indiana and Oregon playing on one side
of the bracket, all miss Miami on the other side.
Speaker 5 (14:02):

our Fox.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Sports Radio Bracket challenge, give yourself a pat on the back,
because goodness gracious, what a four games that we had.
Even if this was by far the best one, Jimar,
the only one that we really haven't talked about.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
Let's go back to New Year's Eve Wednesday night.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
You know, uh, Miami versus Ohio State, and so you
and I host Fox Sports Radio on Saturdays eleven to
two Eastern time. I thought Miami would keep it close.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
You did not. And I'm not here to judge you
or criticize you. I well, I was gonna say I was.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Gonna be really right, You're really wrong. Sometimes I was
just really wrong. On this one.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
I would say, I basically got everything else wrong.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
So I'm not here to in any way throw stones
because my house is uh, if it was made of glass,
it's it's shattered right now. But just want to give
you the floor on what you saw Wednesday night Miami
with the victory over Ohio State. In your opinion, let
me just ask you bigger story Miami's win or Ohio
States laying an egg in this game?
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Well, that's tough. I think it's probably Ohio State. But
I think both stories are big. I think that one
thing that you felt like is this Miami team. There
was a point in time during the season where everybody
thought they had enough talent to win the National Championship,
and there were a couple of performances, particularly from Carson
(15:24):
Beck turning the ball over, where you started to think, ah,
you know what, maybe they're not even going to make
the playoff. And of course that was still a very
definite possibility going into the committee's final selections, but you
did know they had a lot of talent. They had Megador,
they had Rubin Bain, they had Fletcher, they had all
(15:48):
sorts of guys Tony, they had a ton of talent,
and it was just as long as they don't turn
the ball over, they're gonna be pretty good and pretty competitive.
I just felt like they were going to turn the
ball over a lot against Ohio State. This felt a
lot to me, This Miami team felt a lot to me,
like the Ohio State team from last year that lost
(16:10):
to Michigan. You didn't feel that great about him going
into the playoff, and then they absolutely crushed Tennessee and
you started seeing their athletes pop back onto the stage,
Will Howard make a play, like all the stuff all
of a sudden, it just starts working. And Miami was
just my initial feeling at the end of it was just, man,
Miami just beat their brains out, like they just they
(16:33):
were faster on defense. It got interesting, but it really
and truly I never felt like Ohio State was going
to come back and win the game. Just watching it,
the flow of that thing just it was just exactly
the kind of game that Miami fans would have wanted.
And I heard this said today and I would agree
(16:54):
with it. Mario Cristaball is all about the trenches. He's
all about building up offensive and defensive line, and this
was like the perfect test case of what Mario Christobaul
wants a football team to be. And they dominated the trenches,
which is not something that generally happens against Ohio State.
But they just they did not look as tough, as physical,
(17:17):
as fast as Miami did. And I think the easy
thing there is just well, you know, Ohio State didn't
play very many teams, and the good teams they played,
you know, they didn't score very many points. And then
started looking at Julian Sayan and all this other kind
of stuff. I just thought Miami was a better football
team than this. Even if Ohio State is probably gonna
(17:37):
end up being the bigger story because they're Ohio State
and they usually are win or lose, I just felt
like this was more about in my opinion, it was
more about Miami really kind of this is the best
version of Miami. This Miami right here looked like the
national champion on that field.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
I'll tell you what, it's not just you who is
impressed by the line play. I saw this earlier today. Now,
I'll be honest. May have slept through College Game Day
this morning prior to the Orange Bowl between Oregon and
Texas Tech, but Mario cristaball joined College Game Day. Here
is what Nick Saban had to say to Mario Christibal.
You really built this program in a special way, in
my opinion, in terms of your team on the line
(18:19):
of scrimmage, whether it's a defensive line or the offensive line,
which I think that's how you win games this time
of year, when you can dominate the line of scrimmage.
And your guys have done that tremendously. I mean, in
both games against Texas A and m you ran the
ball at will. And last night against Ohio State, who's
supposed to be really physical, you guys dominated the line
of scrimmage on both sides. You built the program that way.
(18:40):
But then he says, how important is that to you
in terms of continuing to make a run. Christa Ball
quickly said, well, I mean it's one of the greatest
lessons under you, Wright coach, And so Christaball acknowledging his
time with Nick Saban. But I bring it up because
Nick Saban even acknowledging. I yeah, they got some bad
dudes on both those lines of scrimmage. So as far
as that game misconcerned a little bit, A couple of
(19:02):
things is that one. By the way, I'm seeing some
sort of highlight where Kirby Smart is going crazy from
that Sugar Bowl that just went final. I don't know
the context behind it, but it was funny to see anyway,
all right, Miami, So yes, So I thought my whole
thing was I just didn't understand and I'm not criticizing
anybody who picked Ohio State to win big, including you,
(19:24):
and I hope it doesn't come off this way. I
just didn't understand how anyone could watch that A and
M game, see the physicality of Miami and say that
they have no shot. Now, to your point, Carson Beck
was not good in that Texas A and M game,
and I could see the I could see the possibility
of Ohio State winning the game in a close manner.
So with that, I do want to switch to Ohio
(19:44):
State because listen, you and I through the years have
been critical of Ryan Day. This is not going to
be me crushing Ryan Day because they went whatever they did.
What were they twelve and two? Obviously the two losses
coming in the final two games of the season. I'm
not going to criticize Ryan Day. We know what he likes.
But I will tell you this, Jemart is that I
saw so much during the season of like, this is
(20:06):
a historically great Ohio State defense, and I'm like, you know, listen, respectfully,
like in the let me even batchrack in this power
in this era where we have sixteen eighteen teams in
a league, you're gonna miss teams, and so I just
bring it up with Ohio State, is I look at them.
I understand it's not their fault that Penn State was
(20:26):
not who he thought they were, that Michigan was not
very good by the end of the year, even though
they finished nine to three. But I looked at them
and I said, who have they beaten? And they could
not move the ball against both Indiana and Texas, And
so I think that in and of itself, independent of
the Miami part of the conversation is, I think we
(20:48):
can legitimately come out of the season and I can
say I don't know how good Ohio State was this year.
Now in their defense, and I'll be quick and I
want to throw it back to you, and then we
got to get to Monsey and Tysher. But in their defense,
this was always supposed to be a rebuilding year. So
I'm not gonna like, oh my god, what a failure, Ryan, No,
it was always going to be a rebuilding year. They lost,
(21:08):
however many guys in the NFL. But I feel like
you can genuinely come out of that season saying I
actually legitimately have no idea how good Ohio State actually
was all along.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
Yeah, I think you make a really valid point. I
don't need to say that much, but I think that
the individual pieces that you knew were good were still
really good. Kittle Downs is awesome, Jeremiah Smith's best player
in college football. Like, I mean, you can just like
pound for pound, Carnel Tait and some of these guys,
like you know who some of these guys are. But
(21:41):
in terms of the overall team, I think that's probably
true still, I mean, still had a great year. But
at the same time, I think that you basically just
looked at because they were the defending champions. You kind
of gave them a pass on the fact that they
weren't played anybody during the season, and you gave them
(22:02):
And I think a lot of it was unconscious. You
didn't even really kind of realize you were doing it.
But then as soon as you saw them against Miami
in particular, very early on, you were just like, wait,
can they match physicality with them? Because it doesn't look
like it and you look up and before long it's over,
and that that was really the better team won that
(22:23):
football game. That was no fluke. I think if they
played that game ten times, Miami would win that thing
seven or eight. Like they're just they're just better. They
were more tested coming in. And yeah, I think that
there was some bias, and I fell prey to it
in favor of Ohio State just because of the past,
which is the same reason why a lot of people
(22:44):
would have picked Indiana or picked Alabama to beat Indiana,
because the bias is just there. It's sort of inherent.
It's just what's Ohio State, They're gonna win? No, No,
they're not.
Speaker 7 (22:56):
This.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Look at the four teams that are remaining in this
We're starting to see some new blood going a lot
further than we used to the old dynasties. They're gonna
be much much harder in this era.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
Yeah, and I'll just put a bow on it by saying,
I do think we now live in a world and
I was even thinking about this with Alabama and we
we'll talk about them later on the show. I think
this is the NFL where just you can't expect year
over year the depth and quality of team is not
so great that like oh Alabama could just sustain this,
or Ohio State can lose this many guys, or like
(23:31):
that's just not the world we're living in, and now
we have a college football semi final setup where we
have Indiana and Oregon on one side of the bracket,
Ole Miss and Miami on the other side, and new
world of college football for sure, New world of college
football for sure. Fox Sports Radio. This is the Jason
(23:53):
Smith Show with Mike Harma. Jason Smith and Mike Harmon
are out. Aaron Torres and Jason Martin are in. By
the way, even though Jason and Mike are out, we
are going to bring something from a regular Fox Sports
Radio show, the Odd Couple Tie Shirts Tower of Trivia.
This is literally the best thing we got going on
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
We're gonna do it in just a minute.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
Before we do, though, news desk Manzi blanios, what is trending?
Speaker 8 (24:17):
I literally only work Thursdays so I can participate in
Alex Tyshirt's Tower of Trivia.
Speaker 5 (24:22):
We got it. We had to get as I'm.
Speaker 8 (24:24):
Saying, like, what a treat, What a treat for everybody involved.
I still have no idea what happened at the end
of that game. I still don't understand.
Speaker 5 (24:31):
Three different celebrations than the game.
Speaker 9 (24:33):
So this is a final call for Ole Miss loose ball.
Speaker 7 (24:37):
John flips it again.
Speaker 5 (24:38):
It's slipped now back and Stock then is in trouble.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
He's tackled.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
Can you put it over?
Speaker 4 (24:45):
Now?
Speaker 5 (24:46):
Put it in the books.
Speaker 10 (24:47):
We got flags down though, let's say the flags.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
The game is over. He ring the.
Speaker 7 (24:56):
Stage back out for the third time.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
Is the third car the Old Miss Rebels will advance.
Speaker 9 (25:03):
H David Kellum from Learfield on that call. Yeah, they
officially move on. They defeat Georgia.
Speaker 8 (25:09):
It went down to the wire, but finals score thirty
nine to thirty four, a bizarre d But it was
trend At Chambliss who did win the MVP Offense, the
offensive MVP of the game because he threw for three
hundred and sixty two yards and two touchdowns. Ole Miss
is going to face Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on
January eighth, and Indiana crushed Alabama at the Rose Bowl
thirty eight to three, while Oregon in the Orange Bowl
(25:32):
shout out Texas Tech twenty three zero.
Speaker 9 (25:34):
So on Friday, January.

first time participating in Alex Tyscher's Tower of Trivia.
Speaker 9 (35:55):
We didn't want to make it complicated.
Speaker 8 (35:56):
So you are tied at two and uh, we've got
four questions to go, So let's go in case you
missed it. Basically, the fellas are gonna give a one
word clue to Alex Tyscher, who's not really a big
fan of sports. But that just goes to show that
you can still know what's going on in sports even
if you're.
Speaker 9 (36:12):
Not following it.
Speaker 7 (36:12):
You know what that is, mon breaking stereotypes.

Speaker 10 (37:20):
I will say that the only thing that makes sense
is road has to be a lane.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Then that world.
Speaker 4 (37:26):
Okay, let's give us. Let's give us both points. Because

Speaker 4 (37:40):
Come on, I don't want to disadvantage my partner Jason Martin.
Just committee no, no, we both get a point for that one.

Okay, as long as there's no A in a word, Blackana.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
I'd like for both of you to be silent. I'm
gonna say McDonald's.
Speaker 7 (38:38):
Oh, McDonald's.
Speaker 10 (38:45):
Gotta be a name, so can't be Burger, can't be nuggets,
which would be.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
A cool first suppose it could have been Manning.
Speaker 10 (38:54):
I try to hold myself back because a lot of
times I just yell out the first thing that comes
to my mind. But I'll be professional here because we
have guests. I'm gonna say Golden Manning.
Speaker 9 (39:07):
Arch Wow, very well done. That was a great clue, Jaymark.
Speaker 4 (39:13):
I think he knows more about sports than he's letting
on I've ever known sports.

It was a disappointing loss on New Year's Eve for
Ohio State and it's head coach Ryan Blank.
Speaker 5 (39:31):
Hmmm.
Speaker 4 (39:32):
Ryan does have an A in it. By the way,
I won't spell it, okay, thank you. The most logical
word would be night, as in the time of day.
Speaker 2 (39:47):
What word, dude, You also said the word.
Speaker 5 (39:52):
Yeah, I guess.
Speaker 8 (39:55):
There there is disqualification by saying and the word.
Speaker 5 (40:00):
Well, there's two ways. There's two different types of nights.
Speaker 4 (40:03):

to wait for me to screw up and then the
rest took care of itself.
Speaker 9 (40:31):

Speaker 4 (40:33):
Jason Smith and Mike Harmon, Jason Martin and Aaron Tortais.
