Speaker 1 (00:31):
Hello, Welcome in Side hour three Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon, back from vacation, our first
show of the calendar year of twenty twenty six. Feeling good,
Lewis looking good, Billy Ray thank him, Jason, don't say it,
don't say it, don't say what, can't say Happy New Year.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
The cutoff was like three days ago.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
I know what I do, but if I don't see
everybody until I can do it, that's not how it works.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Larry David is wrong about that old Saturday night.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
No no, no, you have you have you have five
or six days. If you don't see someone to say happy.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
You're officially out of the will. No.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Hey, there's people like when I go to the store today,
people saying happy.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
New You say happy New Year. Back to them. Say
that again.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Yeah, I'm the people that I saw at the store today. Hey,
happy new year. Say happy new Year. Back to them.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
You are a horrible person trying to be social and
positive in a new year. I said, Look, I.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Said happy New Year to a guy at Yosemite on
vacation that I was mad at and and and.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Wanted to fight. Really was it small? No? No, it
wasn't small. Saw.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Yeah, I saw smalls from the sand Lady vacation.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
So we were we were in semi that would be
news for vacation.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
And it's just absolutely majestic in the in the winter,
going SMITI seeing El Capitan, Like you look up at
El cap and El cap just looks at you and says,
I will absolutely kick your ass, Like it's just amazing.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
You saw you saw Capita?

Speaker 1 (02:00):
No, No, I mean I saw cap I saw I
get kareem. Uh so he'll kick your ass.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
I'm coming.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
We're at one of the one of the vantage points
for one of the falls, and I'm walking with Bailey,
and you know, Bailey's kind of a rescue with the
King's Yeah, we got as Bailey, he's jumping he's.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
Got skates and Bailey the wrestler, one of my favorite
one of my neighbors is a big Kings fan, and
when I told him Bailey, he just is he named
after a Bailey for the Kings.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
That I wanted to say, yes what I wanted to say. No,
I don't know why he's named Bailey, but that's a
great story. I'm just gonna tell that story.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
Or Bailey from the w W where you just call
everybody an idiots. Listen, you idiots.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
So I'm walking with Bailey and I'm walking down the
down a path and Bailey just is jumping from side
to side, side to side, and he goes all the
way to the left to smell something, and I go
over with him and I see, oh, I'm getting in
the way of a guy who's trying to take a
picture of his family.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
So I go, come on, Bail, let's go. Let's go.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
And I turn I say to the guy, hey, I'm sorry,
and the guy just looks down at his camera and
he shakes his head and makes it really sour look
on his face like and.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
I said I'm sorry.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
I said I'm sorry, and the guy again shakes his
head and does that, I.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Go, I'm sorry, I ruined your vacation.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
You could take the picture right, like like he's just
taking a picture of his family in front of the falls,
like the fall stopped going. Oh sorry, man, can't get
that picture now, I said, I said, up, my dog
ran in the way. I said, I'm sorry. Right, So
I go, sorry, I ruined your vacation. He should have
kicked your dog off a bridge.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
So I go bagster.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
So I go down to the bottom of the hill
and I'm by myself because we're all in different my family,
we're all at different places, and I see this guy
is coming down with his family. I go, okay, I'm
just gonna not even look at him. I'm gonna look
the other way because we're standing here and Bailly's kind
of hanging out, like, you know, smelling stuff.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
And the guy comes up to me and he says, hey,
I'm sorry. I look at him.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
I said, oh, I said, hey, I'm sorry too. I said,
Happy New Year. He said Happy New Year. I walked away.
I'm like, okay, I couldn't stand the guy. I'm like real,
like all of a sudden, I walked in in the
like like I turned on a dark room light. Oh,
I'm sorry, all your stuff is ruined now, like he goes.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
I just like that.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
You got really mad too, Like he hadn't really salty
at him for you know, having his moment of.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Only's been dealing with his family. Okay, you're up for
a nice walk with your dog.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
You're away from your family and anybody that could be
bothering you. He's stuck with his okay, And in that moment,
someone probably said, hey, Dad, we need this picture. He's
probably been trying to take it for a half hour
when you and Bailey stumbled upon him.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
I'm sure his family told him, Dad.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
You you. The guy apologized to you twice. The guy,
he said, he was sorry twice. And it's not like
it's not like Bailey. It's like he ran over or
he went to the bathroom on his shoes or anything
or that a good move. It was literally, it was
all of a two and a half second thing, and
I go and there's nothing you were timing it for.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
That was the only time. I tell you at sunset now,
I gonna wait a whole day. No, I was middle
of the day. So he's being really unread. But but
again again I know, but I told the guy happy news.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
He could have dropped a how do you insert your
favorite director here?

Speaker 3 (05:02):
I'm losing the light. I told them happy.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
So it was black Monday in the NFL today for
head coaches and a couple of jobs to get to
here where teams are looking for new head coaches. Right,
we saw today Raheem Morris is going to be interviewed
by the Titans for their head coaching job after getting
let go by the Falcons pretty much immediately after their
final game. Hey, they win yesterday. They keep the Bucks

(05:27):
out of the playoffs. They won games down the stretch. Hey, thanks, Rahiem.
Yeah you're going sorry about that. You're out all the
GMS out too.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Will Raheem Morris's win also cost Todd Bowles Super Bowls
his job because he made it impassion plea. But you
go eight to nine, you win four in a row
down the stretch. Did you make the decision on starting
Michael Pennock's over Kirk Cousins, No, you didn't. Drake London
jumping up and down and losing his mind after scoring

(05:54):
a touchdown.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
And that's the thing right for this opening, just for
a couple of minutes on on Raheem Morris.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
That this is an opening you really want if you're
gonna be a head coach in the NFL, because on
the surface, it looks great. You have a potential franchise quarterback,
you have an absolute franchise running back, You have pretty
good weapons at wide receiver and potentially a tight end.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
You got to figure out what you're doing.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, but this mix just hasn't worked. For the last
couple of years. It's been the same players and it
just hasn't worked. It hasn't popped. And now the next
coach coming in is Michael Pennick's a franchise quarterback. You
still don't know after two years, right, JJ McCarthy. They
don't know after one year, Michael Pennick Junior, Which tells

(06:43):
me if you don't know after two years, how much
longer are you gonna go?

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Right?

Speaker 1 (06:46):
But Jean Robinson is great, right, best running back in
the NFL? So okay, But Kyle Pitts is he really
gonna break out? Is he ever gonna really do that?

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Right?

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Drake London Mooney? These guys are they really great? Received?
Are they consistent enough? Receivers?

Speaker 1 (07:00):
You have a lot of young talent, but for the
last two years it hasn't jelled. So do you really
think it's an overwhelming talent? Like it's different than walking
into New York going Jackson, Dart Scataboo, Tyrone, Tracy Malik, Neighbors,
Wandelle Robinson, Theo Johnson. You got some dudes, a pretty
good defensive line. You got some dudes. Man, that's a

(07:21):
great job. The Falcons, I don't know. I feel like
they need a new mix and they need something different.
And if you're a head coach, you're not walking into
position where you can succeed. You're walking into a spot
where you have a lot of young talent, but it's
not been able to coalesce. And two years is a
long time in the NFL to not know if you
have a franchise quarterback, wide receiver is good enough, a

(07:41):
franchise tight end you don't. And it's a bad division
and you still couldn't make enough. You couldn't win one
more game. You couldn't find a way to do that
this year. Yeah, I don't know that the Atlanta Falcons
is a great job. And you got this is caveat
empdor for whoever wants to come in. If you think
that's a great job, man, there's other teams to cast
your lot with better than Atlanta.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Yeah, it's the curiosity, right Rahee Morris. She said he's
gonna interview with Tennessee. It seems like they're gonna talk
to everybody favorite Louna Rumos getting Oh, Tennessee's doing the
old nationwide search for our new head.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Want to make it look like we really know what
we're doing. We're gonna talk to twenty.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Five guys to be our next head coach, including Jeff Fisher.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Bring him back. You think you might get a call
about it.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
You can't tell why not. But you look at that roster,
right Becau Kyle Pitts is done. Are you gonna franchise him?

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Yeah? I mean really you you're gonna pay him big dollars?

Speaker 4 (08:33):
He No, Michael Pennix, you talk about whether you trust
him as your franchise or not. You don't know when
he's gonna be ready, right, he just suffered another big injury.
Kirk Cousins, you've got under contract. Someone might be willing
to take it on. But Arthur Blank could have done
that this year in theory. But showed reticence to that
buy out. By the way, he also did the Godfather hug.

(08:56):
All he's waiting for was the full kiss on the
cheek and afraid online because of Cousins also needed to
prove that he could still.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
Sling coming off the last year getting bench. Nobody wanted it.
But now after this, Okay, he's shown he can do it.
He can be a bridge squad. We gotta find it.
Money becomes the money. But now teams will be a
little bit more interesting. If I'm Atlanta and we've been.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
Saying this or right, I've certainly been saying it to
you all along, it's like he's my guy, Like I've
already pot committed that money. This So like in Panis,
he comes along and you still have two more years
on his rookie deal to decide whether he works or not.
And then is Kirk getting through seventeen games? Probably not,
so you're gonna eat Panis at some point anyway.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
That's it. Well, you got a roster. The defense was
supposed to be that much better. They weren't.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
Yeah, like it was in the great expectation. It's not
a bad job. It's just not the job you think
it is right because the job, look, you compare it
to the Giants, Dude, people should be falling all over
each other like squid game, trying to kill each other
to get this Giants job. Because of the talent level
you have there. Right in New York, you'll be able
to draw free agents like that's that's how good this

(10:00):
job is. But Atlanta, there's so many more pitfalls, almost
like it's like a trap job. Like you feel it's
greatly you may have to navigate Pennis and Cousins again next.
Would you really want to do that? Right, because you
know Arthur Blanke is committed to Pennix, And if you
can't find someone for Cousins, that, okay, you want somebody
else in there. But dude, not not all jobs that

(10:20):
have good young talent are great opportunities like that. I
think that that's a trap job. It seems like it's
a great job, but man, there's a lot that can
go wrong, and you're not in a position to succeed
in that job.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
The other question is who becomes the guy to succeed
font No, and McKay's up in the front office, so
there's still a power question that's coming in and what's
the vision of that new GM man. You got John Robinson, who, look,
he's setting all time records and just absolutely absurd. Now

(10:52):
he's coming off of what three hundred and seventy touch season,
So that's also one of those raise your eyebrows of
all right, twenty twenty.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Now, now the other the other coach you got fired today,
Jonathan Gannon fired his head coach of the Cardinals. Okay,
it's the Cardinals. We knew was gonna happen three years. Yes,
he'll be a top coordinator. And that's the one thing
about this coaching cycle is that the coaches who have
been fired will be sought after. His coordinators, whether you're
you know, we talked about Dable a few minutes ago.
Gannon's gonna be sought after. But the biggest thing this

(11:24):
tells you with Gannon leaving, Kyler Murray is absolutely done.
We talked about this months ago, right, Murray's played his
last down as a starting quarterback with the Arizona Cardinals.
His injury history, the fact that when he was hurt
this year, you got just as good, if not better,
production from Jacoby Brissette.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Not that something.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Jacoby Brissett is your guy. But hey, Bressett can be
your guy for a year if you're drafting a quarterback
to try because you have to start over, right, whatever
it is, it's not worked. You've seen Kyler Murray for
the last six years, and while he has flashed and tantalized,
he's never broken through. You figure out the money, which
you can. Kyler Murray will be on another team next year.
We told you a month ago, either the Jets or

(12:05):
the Raiders or the Steelers. One of those teams is
going to wind up getting Kyler Murray because again, you'll
figure out the money. You won't have to give up
a lot and draft pick. They're going to start over.
A new coach is not going to want to come
in saying yes, I'll try to make it work with
Kyler Murray. Hey, the guy was drafted number one overall.
You've seen other quarterbacks drafted high. It's taking them a
little bit of their journey to become great. And okay,
we've seen that, right. We've seen the journey with Sam Darnol.

(12:27):
We've seen the journey with other guys. We've seen journey
with Baker Mayfield. Maybe it's the journey with Kyler Murray.
He will have that kind of interest level, But there
is no way he is back as a starting quarterback
next year when they're bringing in somebody new with some
new philosophy. Now again, it's not going to be We're
going all in on a rookie quarterback. It will be, Hey,
we like Jacoby Brissett. He was pretty productive.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Right.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Anybody that plays fantasy that picked up Jacoby Brissett was
starting him down the stretch and feeling good about it,
great about it. So Brisset to your next guy. Yeah,
but you need to reset. Look, you had a lot
of injuries this year. Connor getting hurt, Trey Benson getting hurt,
Marvin Harrison Junior got hurt. They all finished the season
on ir You thought you made a couple of moves
defensive that we're gonna work.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
It didn't.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
It's a reset, But there's no way you're coming back
with Kyler Murray. We said it a month ago. He's
played his last down as quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.
He will be dealt in the off season.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Yeah, it always comes back to patience and again, making
the money work out and finding a team desperate. With
the Raiders drafting where they are. They'll take their franchise
guy and Mendoza or more maybe.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
And then move on.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
But when we look at Arizona, I mean you're at
year seven of Kyler Murray and the wheels may not
work the same way the stuff that made him special.
You talk about Jacoby Brissett for fantasy purposes, and just
even though it's his seventh team, look at what he
did for Trey McBride. Okay, great tight end made that

(13:53):
much better? Why because he came up and became a
much better red zone target and that cannot be disputed.
For all years he had the Jason Witten disease of
being allergic to the painted grass.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
I can move you between the twenties, but we get
in there, you're not.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
Gonna see me, and literally Kyler Murray couldn't see him.
So now you have Jacobe percent and again it's his
seventh team. He's a bridge guy, but he acted like
a starter. He was treated like a starter. His teammates
loved and we talked about the guys walking in on
his presser after they gave him is he gave out
the Christmas presence and then even after yesterday's game, he's

(14:29):
given everybody a hug, going back into the locker room,
thanking them for what they did. He's the last man standing.
Gannon's gone, and now you bridge with a very inexpensive
veteran quarterback as you build towards the future.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
Exit a about a Fresco exit, swallowing down The Jason

We'll get to the game of Week eighteen and a
big hot take coming your way in a minute, on camera,
on camera, always.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
But your selfish bastard. Mea, here's the bookie priest.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
So we talked a few minutes ago Kyler Murriyo Jonathan
Gannon fired as Cardinal's head coach. Today told you Kyler
Murray's played his last game as a Cardinal. We told
you that a month ago. I'm also gonna go back
to what I said a month ago about the trade
that solves both teams problems, or at least it just
exchanges one problem for another, which, if it's a new problem,
is better than facing the same.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Problem over and over again.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Kyler Murray for to a tongue of Iloa who said
today to the media, a fresh.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
Start would be dope.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
I mean, I mean it's not like I'm saying, hey,
I'm trying to be no, he said, a fresh start
would be dope. So Kyler Murray for two, a tongue
of Iloa, who says no really. Hey, wait a long Okay,
wait a minute, Wait a minute, wait a minute. Uh,
you're smoking dope in my classroom, mister Specoli, who says,

(16:54):
no really, because is either team gonna draft a quarterback? No,
the two best guys are gonna go at the top
of the first round as long as he decides come
out for Nano Mendoza and Dante Moore. Right, and it's
the Raiders and the Jets picking one too. Maybe Dante
Moore decides I want no part of the Jets. I'm
going back to school, in which case, then you're not
taking a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
You're Miami.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
You want to move forward, right, Okay, we got to
get out from under Tua. We'll take Kyler Murray. He
has issues. He's a little bit more talented, but we
gotta pay him a little bit more money that we're inheriting. Okay,
if you're the Cardinals, well we're trading a little bit
more talented of a guy, but we got a guy
who's a little bit healthier, maybe not quite the player
he was, but maybe it works with our new head coach.
Maybe it works bringing in he's our bridge guy who

(17:36):
says no, that trade of two quarterbacks that have underachieved
but are still young enough to have some sort of
value around the league. Who says no to that, Dolphins
in the car, that trade should happen tomorrow. You should
maybe make that trade tomorrow. Hey, yeah, what if you Hey,
let's okay, let's do it. Okay, great, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
But if Mike McDaniel couldn't figure out how to make
two of work on a larger, more consistent level, the
hell's in?

Speaker 3 (18:01):
Next guy in Arizona gonna do it's Arizona? What does
it matter Sarah Zona being in Miami's Arizona? Come on,
who cares?

Speaker 1 (18:09):
It's in that Simpsons episode where Homer says, now, we
just have to spruce up the town and wait for
an NFL team to come knocking on our door. And
then the guy because he goes up to Homer and says, Hi,
I'm with the Arizona Cardinals.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
Keep moving, keep moving. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (18:25):
If I'm Mike McDaniel, I want my I want a
new new fresh blood. So either it's quinn Ewers, who
you saw the last couple of weeks and maybe you
decide you can make something out of that, or I
want a shining.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
Angel, Quinn Youewers and Kyler Murray. You could do that
if you want to. I'm not saying you don't have
to since I picked up when you were in both
my dynasty leagues.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
Hey, I'm okay with that.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
Yeah, I'm just trying to say, like if i'm I'm McDaniel,
I'm also talking to the new GM, which evidently he's
going to help in that search.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
So not only is he safe, he's helping.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
Guy McDaniel say, I'm acting like I'm helping the GM.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
Oh, okay, great, you're.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
The assistant to the regional manager, Isn't Isn't Troy Aikman
the guy right now? You got Akman in there and
Marino and they're gonna slap fight over who gets more credit.
Tree Aikman may actually play quarterback next year for my body. Yeah,
remember those rooms the end of his career, always gonna
go to Miami for a year.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
But I mean real, I mean he's still in better
shape than most. Think about that trade. If you're gonna
trade both of these guys, right, and those have been
big stories today, the money situation has to be figured out.
You're not getting great draft picks back, so Okay. If
that's the case, if I'm trading my quarterback that I'm
paying a lot of money to for another quarterback who's

(19:41):
not the same guy, maybe I may because you can
move on from Kyler Murray's contract after this year. You
can move on there after this year. The dead cap
is not a big deal. The guaranteed money is not
a big deal. So but you're trading for him for
one year. You want Kyler Murray for this year, so
you would be okay with that. So this again, this
solves everybody, makes too much sense to not happen. We

(20:04):
don't have to worry about tons of money, don't have
to worry about draft picks. It's a quarterback quarterback trade.
And if Kyler Murray comes in and wins the job
over Quinn, you weres great. If he doesn't, you have
bet you can jettison him and you're paying Quentin you
were still a second or a fifth round brock perty
S contract.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
You're talking about your apocalypse. You know in a.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Few years, you're okay. Same thing if you're the Cardinals. Hey,
if to it doesn't work, we'll move on from him.
We'll get somebody else next year at a big quarterback
Rich draft in twenty twenty seven. But maybe with a
sledgehammer running game that we have with Connor and Benson
coming back, you had a couple of pretty good wide receivers.
Maybe they can make it work with two a little
bit more here in a short passing game system. I

(20:44):
mean really, sometimes just an exchange of problems does wonders
for you. I don't want to keep working on the
same problem for four years. If I can't solve a
problem for four years, guess what, I want to work
on a new problem. All right, great, and it works out.
You got a problem, yo, I'll solve it. That's basically
what you're trying for. I'll trade you for another problem.

(21:05):
I'll go and i'll decide the degree of problem. If
there was a problem, yo, I'll trade it. Get a
new problem, and maybe I'll solve it.

Speaker 4 (21:12):
Cause you got McBride, right, who's the number one tight
end in the game.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
That's not I'm in the NFL. You can always check
out the hook while your DJ resolves it. No, that's true.
That's true. Revolver is also my favorite Beatles album.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
Remember seeing an interview with Nanilla Ice once where they
asked them about Hey, did you take that beat from queen?
And he said no, if you listen to theirs, theirs
goes ding ding ding did ding ding and might be
goes ding ding ding do d ding ding.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
Yeah, like one or two notes. No, he had to
pay out. That's not had a four year old xylophone. Yeah,
they made all the money.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
And then you know, it's better to ask for forgiveness
than permission, and they just cut the check when the
singles a big hit. But to your point, like, there
are parts of that team that you like in Arizona, right,
Wilson thousand yard receiver. You hope that Harrison Junior gets
to be the player they expected of. McBride's the number one,

(22:08):
Connor whatever he's got left, and McBride and and Benson
in the backfield, and then you have to piece together
the other three or four guys that were there defensively.
You spent your entire draft on the defensive side. And hey,
that was what Gannon was supposed to be good at.
That was what was supposed to work and be better
this year, and instead it was an abject failure from

(22:30):
pillar to post. Yeah, bring it in two. I don't
know how much it solves it. I like the day.

Speaker 3 (22:36):
Well, I'm hearing it. I'm just hearing.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
You.

Speaker 4 (22:41):
Wish you had hair ending ding with a stripe like
the Gremlin DJ clearly watching some Rockman lovers driving Lamborghini's
hair top down.

Speaker 3 (22:50):
Some of my hair can blow him. Uh.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
So with that being the case again, Kyler for tu
assaults problems, Uh, talk about problems, talk about problems. Last
night's game with the Steelers and the Ravens, big swing
of emotions at the end, it looked like each team
had the game at least a couple of time.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
Oh that game was drunk.

Speaker 1 (23:13):
I mean really an incredible throw and catch by Isaiah
likely on the big fourth down play to give him
a first down. But you want to talk about where
the epic fail is, right for the Ravens, who seemingly
every year find a way in a big game to
absolutely blow chunks. Right, sometimes Lamar Jackson, Sometimes it's not.
Sometimes Mark Andrews dropping a ball. But when I look

(23:35):
at what failed this game, right, Tyler Loot missing the
forty four yard field goal on the final play of
the game. Okay, I've said for a long time we
are in the best era of field goal kickers in
the NFL. And that is true. However, not all field
goals are created equal. And this is a guy we
talked to Jason Lockin for you know in Baltimore earlier
in the show.

Speaker 3 (23:55):
It's his first big pressure kick. He's a rookie.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
Yes he's been good, but you trust him to make
this field goal and he missed it. And it's not
the fact that well, you trust to me missed it,
he says. He just says, I mishit it. I didn't
hit it right. It went wide right. But think about
this for a second, because this is where the Ravens
had the epic fail. This is a forty four yard
field goal in Pittsburgh, one of the most difficult places

(24:19):
to kick in all of the NFL.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
Especially when the pulpe comes to the field.

Speaker 1 (24:24):
I mean, the priest blessed the end of the end
zone loops kick with no of course, help the Steelers.
They got a priest sitting there, but I mean he
was throwing his holy water down like where the ball landed.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
I'm like, all the.

Speaker 4 (24:36):
Way through and through the end zone, and I've never
seen a national broadcast pick up on something like that
fast as they did.

Speaker 1 (24:44):
Got circle back after that in the ball to the
water on the ground, right. So it's the most difficult
place to kick. You have seen many times over the
course the past twenty years in the NFL. Guys miss
big kicks. It's hard, especially now on a Sunday night
in the cold, in the winter with the mist. This
is a forty four yard field. Not everybody's Cam Little, right,

(25:07):
not everybody is Cameron Dicker. This is a difficult field goal. Now,
it's a makeable field goal, and you're happy to kick it, but.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
You just put that out there, he's gonna kill it.
The Ravens get.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
The first down and they have twelve seconds left and
a timeout. I get it, if there were less time
left or they didn't have a timeout, right, How do
you just run a play where Lamar Jackson goes to
the middle of the field and you're okay kicking a
forty four yard field goal. Show me a team that
settles for a field goal, and I'll show you a

(25:39):
team that misses it and loses the game. I've seen
it happen so many times. How do you I'm pretty
sure you could trust Lamar Jackson to try to get
you a few more yards either throwing the football or
running it and not having a twelve second play where
the time ticks out. You have a time out left,
get the ball closer.

Speaker 3 (25:57):
Right.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
If that passed, a likely was down to the fifteen
yard line. Okay, yeah, just set it up in the
middle and you're kicking a thirty two. You're kicking an
extra point, but it's a forty four yard field goal.
There's a degree of difficulty there, and you had a
chance to make a play to go for you just
had you got the Steelers on roller skates. Now, after
that likely play.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
Whatever you want to run. You can. You can run
Lamar Jackson on a delayed run. You can run Lamar Jackson,
you can throw the ball, you can do whatever you
want to do. Don't get sacked.

Speaker 1 (26:26):
And I again, I feel pretty confident in that Lamar
Jackson would find a way to not get sacked on
that play. Right, It's open for you because you know
the Steelers have to find a way to not want
to give it. You're in a big difficult situation here.
Do you go after Lamar Jackson, pin your ears back
to try to get him out of field goal range,
or you risk that he runs for one hundred yards

(26:47):
and a touchdown on that play, or do you play
back going that you don't want Lamar Jackson to beat
you and you'll give him five more or seven more
yards on a field goal?

Speaker 3 (26:54):
Right like that?

Speaker 1 (26:55):
Those are what you can But instead the Ravens decide
we're just going to go to the middle and kick.
But you did this, Steelers an incredible favor there and
of course Loop misses the field goal, Like that's a
big epic fail. And I know that people talk about
wanting John Harball fired at the end of the season.
We talked about it a few months ago. Hey, if
the Ravens don't make it to the playoffs, they're gonna
be looking for a new head coach in the Eventually,

(27:16):
it's not gonna be one of those Hey we're going
to fire in the day after, but it's going to
be a meeting of the minds. Can we go forward
with John Harbaugh as our head coach? And the answer
is gonna be no, because Lamar g You can't waste
the rest of Lamar Jackson's career knowing that this is
as far as you've gotten with him, and whatever reason,
you can't get any further. And the one common person

(27:36):
through all of this besides Lamar is John Harbaugh. And
that's a big epic fail to not say we have
twelve seconds, we can make a play, we can throw
a quick out, we can do it. Because you know what,
with that field goal that he missed, another eight yards
is it good? Might be good? Right, because it just
went by you went by the upright another five or
seven yards. That could be a good field goal. Make

(27:56):
it as easy as you can on your kicker. But
instead you decide, no, where We're okay kicking a forty
four yard field goal. Everything the Steelers wanted you did
for them. And that's a huge feel. And that's if
you want to fire harball for that. Okay, I could
see Ah.

Speaker 4 (28:09):
We talk about how this game just started becoming this
wide open let's air it out and misstackles and guys
falling first stutter step moves and falling down and doing
yoga poses and whatever else. Derrick Henry touched the ball
five times in the second half. He had one hundred
and twelve rushing yards in the first half. Yeah, five
carries in the second half for fourteen yards and doesn't

(28:32):
see the ball there. And you can say Okay, you
don't want to botched, hand up whatever, but again, go
to a modified push push.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
You saw the Steelers execute it.

Speaker 4 (28:40):
Now, they didn't execute very well in their first red
zone opportunity of the game, but here you go. This
was opt to stats sixty thousand field goal attempts in
NFL history. Okay, Tyler Loops miss on Sunday night, the
only one of those attempts that came as time expired
in the fourth quarter in the final week, with both
teams playoff hopes resting on the result of that kick.

(29:01):
It was so bad that I started seeing Billy Kundiff reference.

Speaker 3 (29:06):
Yeah, no, he was trending Norwood pictures. Billy started with
trending he was trending from.

Speaker 4 (29:11):
But think about this run with and people could say
the record with Lamar Jackson, the Plaffs you mentioned, we got,
we had this, We got the Mark Andrews, you got
Zave Flowers dived towards the end zone, getting the ball
knocked out at the one by the Chiefs, Like you've
had just the wildest convergence of circumstances. Means you got
to play cleaner football the rest of the way. Yeah,

(29:31):
don't leave it to the one play felling you. But
you want to talk about a run of bad luck.
It's like, hey, hey we got to the crossroads. You're
gonna have great success. Fifty ninth minute of all these games.
It's all going to help out.

Speaker 1 (29:46):
Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen down The Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon Time how
to find out what's trending in the wide wolve sports
from someone who won a big parlay tonight betting the Suns.

Speaker 3 (29:57):
It's breamireau.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
Then I have it a lot, and I'd be like
crying in the corner.

Speaker 3 (30:02):
Well I didn't say who you bet? You bet the
Son's game?

Speaker 2 (30:05):
Absolutely not. I wouldn't bet against the Suns. Okay, No,
I would have bet like the Wantana state, Illinois state.
If I was going to bet anything. Oh my god,
then I need to go.

Speaker 1 (30:18):
Kid Manci wears advisor in here.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
I do want to be like one of those older
women that like hangs out in Vegas and like hangs
out in the sports book and has that little like
sign like you know where the horse betters are and
they just sit and they drink bloody Mary's all day.
But they have like a sign that says their name.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
No, that's it. If you're a horse, better they take
care of you because they get.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
You can bet on other things though, Okay, but if
you ever want to go for a big event, that's
what you do.

Speaker 4 (30:47):
Gottcha go with bad horses consistently. You get your drinks
and you get a table.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
That's like a dream of mine, Like when I retire.
I don't even think like sports books will exist when
I retire. Who knows we'll be in space or wherever
we're gonna be. But that was just like a dream
of mine when I was younger, for sure, and having
yeah and drinking Bloody Mary's all day, just being retired anyways.
In the NBA, everything is final. The Clippers edged the
Warriors one oh three to one o two. The Nuggets,

(31:12):
without a single starter, defeated the seventy six Ers one
twenty five to one twenty four, a game I did nothing.
I did not bet on at all. The Rockets defeated
the Suns one hundred and ninety seven things to Kevin
Durant three pointer with less than five seconds left to
go in the game. The Hornets dominated the Thunder one
twenty four to ninety seven, and in the NFL, the
Titans are set to interview both Raheem Morris and Kevin

(31:34):
Stefanski this coming weekend. In college football, ole Miss running
back Kawan Lacey will return to ole Miss next season,
and Michigan quarterback Rice Underwood also confirmed that he would
return to Michigan next season. On the ice, the Kings
are up on the Wild two to one in the
third period. They also announced that they were going to
host their first ever Hello Kiddy Night on February fourth, fall.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
And that adorable to get backpacks? Is that what happens?

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Or there is some kind of like there's a paper
crown giveaway, so you're gonna have You're gonna get to
like have a paper crown and you might score like
a plush like worth Yeah, okay, yeah, So every pack
comes with the limited edition plush And that's pretty much
all I see so far. But it's cool because they're

(32:22):
gonna play the Kraken and that's just already so quiet
love those jerseys already gets back to you.

Speaker 1 (32:28):
I exit all about a Fresca exit swallen down the
Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carman. Hello Kiddy,
Knight at the kings a printing money that way, Hey,
attendance in the three hundred level falling off.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
Come on in.

Speaker 1 (32:43):
I thought she was gonna say, Hey, it's show Heltani
King's bobblehead night.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
That might be next week.

Speaker 1 (32:50):
Tani is a king with a hey, and if you
get the one with the silver tape on the stick,
that's worth way more than with the black tape on
the stick.

Speaker 3 (32:59):
Presses head, he taps on the ice, Give me the puck,
Give me the puck, Give me the puck.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
Coming up next, we revisit after a big result in
Sports Night, we revisit a huge bold prediction I made
in the preseason that now has never looked any better.

Speaker 3 (33:16):
That's an next right here, Jason I Mike. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific,
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon. Yeah,
we're not talking about the NBA regular season. I mean,
I just you know, look, look, let me just say this. Yes,
the Knicks lost tonight to the Piston. They did fourth
loss in a row. Nicks got blown out the Pistons
played last night, they looked like the fresher team. This

(33:49):
is why when I said in the preseason, right, I'm
not trying to obfuscate you from the Knicks.

Speaker 3 (33:54):
We'll get.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
But when I said in the preseason, when I said,
you want too long shot NBA final prediction teams to
make the one freak conference at that were plus ten
thousand or more at the time I gave you the Spurs, Because.

Speaker 4 (34:08):
What plus one thousand or more plus ten thousand is, uh, no,
one hundred to one.

Speaker 3 (34:12):
They were were not one hundred to one to go
to the finals. Yeah they were now thirty three to one. No,
they weren't.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
That is not hang on, I'll find the preseason they
were plus ten thousand. Hang on Spurs preseason NBA finals
on fifty to one, NBA finals plus five thousand odds.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (34:30):
So now now now it's gone to plus five thousand,
all right, So it's just going up. So I wait,
I wait thirty more seconds, it'll be up to No,
plus five thousand, there's only fifty to one, it'll be
up there. Nobody was just went from thirty three to one. No, no, no,
I was talking about the Pistons.

Speaker 4 (34:44):
So the Pistons were thirty three to one, the Spurs
were fifty one.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
Uh So, just because one hundred to one is a
whole other you know, I mean, I mean, okay, I
saw some plus ten thousands.

Speaker 1 (34:57):
But okay, maybeybe that was it a different sports book or
a different you know, I'm looking at it right here.
So the Spurs in the West and the Pistons in
the East. Spurs because Wenby was going to become the
best player in the game at some point.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
He is.

Speaker 1 (35:12):
He just has to stay healthy. And the Pistons, they
were on the cusp last year. That's a weird year
in the East. This year, Yes, the Celtics are playing
better than expected without Jason Tatum. But okay, but all
the powers. Look, the Pacers are no good. The Cleveland
Cavaliers aren't the team you thought they were going to be.
The Magic are nice. The Knicks are the favorites overall

(35:34):
because of how far they went last year, the team
they brought back this year. But the Pistons showed you tonight. Look,
and again it's a game in January where the Knicks. Look,
the Knicks already won a title. So I'm okay with it.
I mean I watched it, confetti. I don't know why
we're still playing basketball, but okay, to a new season. But
this Pistons team, you saw them. They just ran up

(35:54):
and down the floor on the Knicks there deeper Ivy
is coming off the bench. He had a big game tonight.
He's still not all the way back to where he is.
This is a really good team. They were really good
last year. They need they maybe needed that playoff loss
to New York to understand, Okay, you lose before you
can win.

Speaker 3 (36:11):
Sometimes teams need that. But they are now out and.

Speaker 1 (36:16):
To be fair, are they treating the regular season much
more seriously than other teams are? Yeah, because the Knicks
are doing things like, oh, Karl Anthony Towns, you have
the sniffles, You're not gonna play right, because that's what
happened last year. Hey, Craig cat Kat's gonna say, nobody
is taking the regular season as seriously as let's get
that one seed home court advantage all the way through.

(36:36):
But the Pistons are young, don't know any better, and
this is how they're playing, and they're playing great, and
I have no doubt they'll be the number one seed
in the East. When you're young and you're going for
it and you're happy, you're playing to the level you
should be playing at. You guys aren't playing too many minutes. Yeah,
go for it, go get I get it. So there
is a little bit of well, okay, the Pistons are
treating the regular season a little bit more seriously than

(36:56):
other teams are. But they are absolutely legit. I thought it
was a hot start. It was xyz. I don't believe
in Kate Cunning. This is a team that is really deep.
They made a couple of very subtle moves in the
offseason that made them even better. They're absolutely legit. And
maybe today was an Eastern Conference final preview, but the
Pistons have arrived. Like this new era of the Pistons

(37:18):
being an Eastern Conference power, the era of good feeling
is in Detroit for the Pistons.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
It may be leaving for the Lions, but it's now.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
But for the Pistons, that era of good feeling is
it Detroit basketball?

Speaker 3 (37:31):
Like that's back now. It's conservation of energy. It's back.

Speaker 4 (37:35):
It's got to flow from one place or another. We
don't create or lose it. It just it doesn't dissipate,
it just moves to another force. Yeah, Cunningham nearly twenty
seven points per game. When we look at the average age,
they are the thirteenth youngest team on average twenty five
years and a month for their starting lineup, whereby the

(37:58):
Knicks we're at twenty six. So they are at twenty
seven point two is their average age of starter. So, yeah,
you have a little bit of a sense of urgency,
whereas you got to manage to the eighty two man.
To your point about Kat who defensively he ain't giving
you much sometimes anyway that you need to be careful

(38:18):
like he certainly couldn't do what Tom Tibodhau wanted. And
it's a new world order, but you don't have a
very deep bench, like it's still something you're working through
to where you want it and have fewer tax minutes
and on back to back nights you're gonna dip out
for the Pistons, still running deep, still running with a
deep reservoir of players. So thirty three to one your spurs,

(38:40):
as I look it up, sixty six to one at
one book, so we'll split the difference.

Speaker 3 (38:44):
But yeah, almost put the Yeah, we'll get that. We'll
get there for you. But I mean, look, but that's
the thing is that this is this is.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
A really weird year in the NBA, because all right,
we thought the thunder were gonna roll, not Thunder having problems.

Speaker 3 (38:56):
Now Thunder's got problems. Mud dusted off of Thunder roll
and DJ like Garth Brooks told us in the nineties.
So it's a really weird year.

Speaker 1 (39:06):
Not that it's wide open, but all the teams that
you think are gonna be the ones to rise up.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
Yeah, they got a few issues.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
Right. It's it's kind of like the unpredictable season we've
had in college football, but in the East with the Pistons,
I mean that when you are young and you can
come at another team in waves like you're gonna win
games just because of that, right. They kind of remind
me of where the Tea Wolves were a couple of
years ago, when you thought, well, here there are at
their great defense, make a big run of the conference finals.

(39:34):
And then now you know Anthony Edwards and Chris Finch
they can't stay in the same huddle together. Uh, you know,
I'm gonna leave the floor when you're taking me out
of the game, like, obviously they've turned out to have issues.
But that's kind of where the Pistons are now. They're
at that point where I thought.

Speaker 3 (39:47):
The Wolves were a couple of years ago, where where.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
I thought we're at the beginning of the Minnesota Oklahoma
City era in the Western Conference, and that's not there anymore.

Speaker 4 (39:55):
Yeah, I mean Edward shouldn't have called him an angry elf.
As soon as he did. Hell went to hell.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
One more time. I got homes in Los Angeles, in Paris,
in Italy one more time.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
But yeah, you run five, had more women in the
last month that you've had in your whole life.

Speaker 6 (40:12):
Call me elf one more time, helf. Yeah, all of
that to say, you gotta be healthy in April.

Speaker 4 (40:24):
That's all that matters. Sure, like the eighty two games
winning and boat racing teams. It's nice on a Monday night,
it doesn't matter. Show me you're starting five ready to
go come April. Problem is peaches too vulnerable. That's too vulnerable.
True can have it, can have? How about asparagus? And
they feel self conscious because of how Coming.

Speaker 1 (40:43):
Up next we get back into not one, but two
big stories in the NFL. One head coach five today
was sad about, and one wasn't fired that I'm mad about.
