Speaker 3 (00:50):
Rip the knob off.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
So we got Mark Medina coming up Lakers and Clippers
Insider in a few minutes, and nobody better to talk
to tonight than the night that James Harden got traded
away from the Clippers and Lebron James, for better or
for worse, is going to stay a Laker through the
deadline and through the end of the regular season. But
two really fun stories out of the NFL today. One
(01:13):
is going to really shock you, Mike Carmon, It's gonna actually.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Gonna shock me. I don't shock easy.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Will we'll we'll we'll lead up to that.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
The first one, man and I have to ask after
hearing this story, who has biffed their quarterback situation worse?
One the Atlanta Falcons new team president Matt Ryan, who
is still the best quarterback on the roster.
Speaker 5 (01:38):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
We're asked today about Michael Pennix junior and will he
be the quarterback when health Remember he got hurt middle
of this year. He may not be healthy for the
beginning of next year. He was asked today, Hey, when
he's healthy, obviously, Michael Pennick, says, your guy, right, Matt
Ryan said, ah, the words elite course, So not so fast,
my friend, either of.
Speaker 6 (01:59):
Us at the head coach the football team. So we
can't answer your question on that, but you know, I
think all of us are going to get together. As
Ian's been a part of it for I guess three days, yeah,
three days, and has had a lot on his plate
during that time. I think, you know, as we start
(02:19):
to get into this process and dive deeper into the roster,
how it currently stands, where it's you know, going in
the future, I think those are conversations that'll be a
part of it. Quarterbacks obviously very important, and we're you know,
excited about Mike and what he's doing with his rehab.
I've been up at the facility the last you know,
three weeks, and Michael's been in there attacking that and
(02:40):
he's in a good space right now. So we're excited
about where he's at. But certainly a lot of discussions
for us about the entire roster.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, he knows what he's saying. Bye Michael Bennix Junior.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Bye bye.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Really, you think about how badly Atlanta has biffed their
quarterback situation, where they go from making the worst decision
possible not giving Kirk Cousins that money, not drafting Michael
Pennick Junior, but giving Kirk Cousins one hundred and sixty
million dollars guaranteed and then drafting Michael Pennick Junior was
an awful decision. Right, you could do one either one,
(03:16):
but you do both. That's just stupid. It's absolutely stupid,
but they did. And now they're at the point where
we talked about this the other night, which is why
we say we're head of the curve. The Falcons may
have no quarterbacks because Kirk Cousins is likely gonna get
released sometime before the new league year starts on March thirteenth.
He's gonna go someplace else. Michael Pennick Junior right now,
(03:38):
he's not flashed and he can't stay healthy. And here's
Matt Ryan who has walked in and he's been there
all of five minutes, and he can't say, oh, of
course Mike's our guy. There's nobody else on the roster.
Of course Mike's the guy. There's nobody else there. He
was a starting quarterback. You picked him in the first round.
Of course he's gonna be the guy. No, No, I'm
not even gonna give you that when he is healthy.
So now they have no quarterback. They absolutely have no quarterbacks.
(04:02):
So I ask you this, Mike carbon who has biffed
their quarterback situation worse the Atlanta Falcons or the Vikings, who,
of course knew they had a great quarterback in Sam
Darnold and decided no, no, no, we're gonna let him
go because we like the untested JJ McCarthy who has
biffed there instead of who wore it best, who biffed
it worse? The Falcons or the Vikings.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Can it be a tie?
Speaker 7 (04:28):
No? Uh, look, some of it is the old dark
Knight joker thing right of cracking the pool Q in
half and saying make it quick.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
I at least could understand to a.
Speaker 7 (04:40):
Degree what Atlanta did right Cousins, who was coming off
an injury, not quite sure where he is, but get
your KG veteran in, bring him in and Pennix plays
when he needs to, or he gets the red shirt
a full year. Instead, everything goes to hell with Cousins.
(05:01):
He's pressed into service Penix, that is, and he isn't
very good. And now you've got the severe injury from
year two and Kirk Cousins was once.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Again, what's that? Not good?
Speaker 7 (05:12):
But I can understand it, right, harkening back to when
Washington drafted Cousins as well as RG three, going back
to twenty twelve, all right, we got two guys, okay, fine,
and now you have none.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
But with Minnesota they.
Speaker 7 (05:27):
At least pushed in and said, well, we really like
JJ McCarthy, or at least some of the organization did.
And we find out that it was a big sticking
point contentiousness. Spider Man memes all of those kind of things.
Spider Man between a Doophamnza and Kevin O'Connell as to
how they thought they should proceed and where the truth lies. Well,
(05:50):
only history may may unveil it if we get access
to some you know, encrypted data. But Sam Darnold also
became a bit of a fall guy, and if he
stayed around, JJ McCarthy may not have won that job.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
And now everybody looks that.
Speaker 7 (06:07):
Much worse, or or Kevin o'connan goes to a pony goes, see,
I told.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
You look as bad as it is for Atlanta, because
I agree with you it is way. This tells you
just how bad of a decision that was kicking out
when you knew the answer, right, Like, okay, if you're
the Falcons, you didn't know that Kirk Cousins is gonna
get hurt and is likely done being a star quarterback
(06:32):
right coming off his injury. And then you know he
couldn't he couldn't keep the job. He wasn't that good
got hurt again. Michael Pennick Junior comes in, gets hurt.
You didn't know Kirk Cousins is gonna be bad. You
didn't know Michael Pennix junior. You were hoping he was
gonna stay healthy, but clearly he was a guy that
got hurt through college. And you know, look when he
draft him, I thought he was overdrafted. I thought he
was gonna have trouble when when plays had to stay
(06:53):
alive and receivers weren't opened by twenty yards and he did.
So I can see that where Okay, well, we thought
he was gonna be good, but we didn't know. Right
in the end, you can just say, if you're the Falcons,
hey we thought we had everything with Kirk Cousins, but
you don't know un till you see a guy in
the field. We didn't know he wasn't going to be
any good. We didn't know Michael Pennix Junior was not
going to be on the field and not going to
(07:14):
be good when he played. But the Vikings knew how
good Sam Dartle was and they still said, nah, no, no,
we don't want any of that man, No, no, we
want unproven stuff like that I mean that. I mean,
I don't know a team has screwed up a quarterback
decision that bad in the history of the NFL. I
don't know that things have been that bad that a
guy that was a Pro Bowl top five quarterback in
the NFL a year before they don't keep and then
(07:37):
the next year he goes to the Super Bowl with
an even better season with a different team. But I
don't know anybody has made that bad a quarterback decision ever.
Speaker 7 (07:45):
Yeah, you know my general feeling when it comes to
these situations, right, because people going to be like, well,
you couldn't keep him around because this guy would be
in his head and in his fields. If he's in
his head and in his fields, he's not your guy
that is not going to be your leader for the
next decade. If he's looking over there and trying to
copy off that guy's paper, or he's worried that he's
(08:06):
taking his job. I need the guy that says, fine,
bring him back and I'll beat his ass in training camp.
But if you decided you couldn't bring Sam back either
to cover your own ass, because well, if he leaves,
we can say it was completely on him. Those two
games at the end of the year, which is conveniently
what has happened in our collective media and Kevin O'Connell
(08:28):
and the brass and the lack of a run game
and everything else that felled them last season at the
end of things conveniently forgotten because it was all Sam's fault.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Once a jet, always a jet, had to be his fault,
had to be his fault.
Speaker 7 (08:43):
And then he goes here and look, twenty five versus
fourteen touchdown interceptions not something to write home about. But
he had a couple of outlier games, certainly against the Rams,
but they still finished two and one against them, now,
didn't they when it's all said and done. But it's
the the dollar cost averaging. We made all the arguments
(09:03):
all those months ago before any of this had to
go down.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
It's like, you don't know what you had in JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 7 (09:09):
You were wishing and hoping that he was going to
be a guy, and you know, you talked about it
even coming out of your Michigan household, as you term it,
having watched every snap that you didn't buy it. Okay,
But even if you were trying to put the blinders
on in those Minnesota meeting rooms that you were convincing
yourself here that he was going to be the guy. Well,
(09:29):
you didn't have proof of concept yet, and you had
a guy coming off a big injury, and Sam's sitting
there smiling at you with his red beard, and instead
you said, na, no, no, we'll go the other way.
He signs his deal, which was pretty friendly with Seattle.
When it's all said, done that three year, one hundred
million dollars, we all, you know, bark about a one
hundred million dollars, thirty million dollars for a quarterback who
(09:51):
just had the year he had Minnesota nothing.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Yeah, worst quarterback to city. Just look continuing to bring
that up, worst quarterback to s of all.
Speaker 7 (10:00):
And now you're both standing and staring at each other.
Where do we go from here? Panix is on his
third major leg injury. John Robinson's talking up Kevin Stefanski,
that's the guy.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Can't wait, can't wait.
Speaker 7 (10:13):
Sure, Let's let's see how that guy's going to touch
the ball nine hundred times this year.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Yeah, that's a lot. That's that's gonna be a lot,
I mean.
Speaker 7 (10:20):
Which is good that Arthur Smith didn't use him like
a several years ago.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
If you haven't been fantasy, this is the year to
use him if you don't have it. But next year
you want to trade him because he's going to have
a Saquon Barkley like workload. He may have three thousand
yards from scrimmage this year, workload this.
Speaker 7 (10:38):
Year, but how many touches did he finish with this year?
He had to be near four hundred.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
I think I think he had four hundred the last
two weeks. I think that could very well be because
they were on TV a lot the last like three games.
Coming down to it, they were they were close to
still bad, sure, but they were still bad. But every
game it was here's Bijon Robb. It was always Jehan
Robinson yards one hundred and ninety three rest of team
twenty seven, right, Like that's what every game was Robinson. Yeah,
(11:08):
I mean just Robinson touchdowns. The last three weeks nine
rest of team won.
Speaker 7 (11:13):
Like that was this that three hundred and sixty six
touches this year, three hundred and sixty five the year before.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Yeah, I mean it's just oh man, I'll tell you that.
That's just it's such a bad uh. Look like the
Falcons is one thing, but just I mean, just think
about the scope of this quarterback decision that has changed
the NFL, right, because just think about you know, certain
decisions change the scope of the NFL. You know, it's
like a which way book, Like just think if if
(11:41):
the if the Vikings had done the smart thing, which
would have been okay in the very in the very least,
we franchise Sam Donald for a year and see where
we're at, right, because obviously going into they were a
little bit unsure with JJ McCarthy. So we franchise Sam Darnald,
uh and we keep them for you? But no, no,
it looks bad if JJ McCarthy can't win the job again,
(12:02):
and what do we do and for something they wanted
to be So beholden to that, to that pick of
JJ McCarthy again, find someone who loves you as much
as the Vikings love JJ McCarthy. You know it's to
do to make that decision where it was easy to
just find many different ways to hold on just at
least for another year. Right, So if they do that,
make the easy call, like the entire NFL changes. What
(12:24):
the hell do the Seahawks do for a quarterback? Right? Like,
what what do they do? They do they do they
draft Tyler Shuck? And maybe are they in the super
Bowl with Tyler Shuck or do you.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Just either redraft now all the way up to number two? Yeah,
let's go.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
But like, would Minnesota have been fantastic? Would Minnesota be
in the Super Bowl with another year of Sam Darnold?
And I know, I know Justin Jefferson would have been
a lot more happy. But would Minnesota found a way
to build off the fourteen and three last year? And one?
Because you saw the rest of the division this year
wasn't great? Still won nine games? They are no quarterback
playing one nine games this year? Right, so just just
think about it. Maybe Minnesota is this good. We know
(13:00):
Seattle's not this good. Maybe the Rams were in the
Super Bowl again because they wind up winning. Like everything
in the NFL change because the Vikings. The Vikings couldn't
find a way to keep a quarterback who was twenty
seven years old that threw for thirty five touchdowns and
four thousand yards.
Speaker 7 (13:14):
I just know this last weekend, when the video started
popping up of Justin Jefferson on that podcast, I did
the full Leonardo DiCaprio sitting in my chair leaning forward pointing, hey,
there it is because we predicted that two months ago
that eventually Justin Jefferson would be on some medium to
(13:35):
where he finally popped off, and there it.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
This time kidn't counts.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
And TJ clearly the love spreads for James Harden in
Cleveland after the trade tonight, whoa.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
Whoa, whoa, it's too early. It's not ten o'clock here yet.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Right, it's love spreads. So two big moves in the
NBA tonight, huge bone won a trade, won a team,
and star that's not getting traded joining us now. Unique
perspective on both of these stories. LA Basketball insider Aflon
(15:11):
Sports Sports Central La here in La Spectrum sports Net.
He covers the Lakers and the Clippers. He is longtime
friend of the show who has been undermining JJ Reddick
at every turn the last year and a half. It
is Mark Medina, Mark. What's happening?
Speaker 5 (15:24):
Man?
Speaker 1 (15:25):
How are you?
Speaker 5 (15:26):
Jason? I'm doing well now, Jason? Come clean? Here are
you in pins and needles? This trade deadline on where
Ger showing you Bisselli is gonna kind up?
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Yeah, we're trading you Bisselli for Yannis. You didn't know
that It stretches straight up deal.
Speaker 5 (15:39):
Yeah, that's a fair deal for both sides. If I'm
in the Milwaukee Bucks, I say you got to pull
the trigger because you're not going to get a better
deal than that.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
No, No, that's it. Forget about Oh, come on, you
want Tyler Hero and Haimi Hawkes and a bunch of picks,
not at a No, you want Yabiseli you got.
Speaker 5 (15:54):
Yeah, And you don't want Jimmy Butler or Draymond Green
from the Golden State Warriors. That's Biselli all the way.
They got to keep the international talent pipeline intact.
Speaker 7 (16:04):
Actually, how much would you want Jimmy Butler or Draymond.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
Well, here's the thing. Jimmy Butler, you know, you don't
know how much available he would actually be because of
his ACL injury. With Raymond, he could be available, but
he could get objected before the gaming even starts.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
All right, So let's start with the James harden trade.
You know you have a lot of this on your
social media account tonight, Like was this the typical James
Harden I kind of want out or was this a
little bit differently where Hey, the Clippers made the move,
They made a trade, and it was just one of
those trades that happens where they got younger and they
(16:42):
got a little more athletic and maybe maybe a little
bit better in the long run.
Speaker 5 (16:45):
Yeah, I think it was amicable for both sides. This
James Harden exit is a pattern, but it's not the
same story. With Houston, it was because he didn't like
the direction the team was going. They got rid of
Daryl Morey and Mike D'Antoni. Not resigning guys. He wants out.
It's clear Houston's going nowhere. With Brooklyn, it was hey, Kyrie,
(17:05):
how about you get the vaccine so you can play basketball.
He doesn't do it, so he wants out Philadelphia. It's
because Darryl Morey doesn't want to pay him. He wants
out here. With the Clippers, it wasn't as cut and
dry of, oh, you know, I have a player option
forty six million, I went out. I think it was
more of an amicable thing that the Clippers knew they
(17:26):
weren't heading anywhere beyond possibly gained the plan Tornament and
that's it. And same thing with James Harden knew that,
so let's find a destination that can give him a
better playoff push. The Cleveland Cavaliers they're somewhat underachieving, but
they're still fourth in the East, and with and with
the Clippers, they get younger now Ironically enough, the Clippers
(17:48):
in the short term might have issues with health once
again because Darius Garland has had a toe injury that's
kept him out for the last nine games. He's been
saddled with injuries all season, but he is younger for
what it's worth. I've been told there's optimism he'll be
available after All Star break, so that's only I think
five more games and he's twenty seven. So yeah, it
(18:10):
was a Cleveton break, very amicable. There will be a
video tribute and there won't be any burning jersey. Is
it into it though?
Speaker 3 (18:17):
All right, well, let's have a little fun of him
going to Cleveland.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
Now.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
Certainly some establishments are posting all over the social media
welcoming him to Cleveland. But for James harden right, you
mentioned the player option, So it's the best of both worlds.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
I guess everybody wins to a degree.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
Either Cleveland gets the best of him, so he's ready
to go into the marketplace with a massive dollar amount,
or he stinks and he opts in and they still
own forty plus million dollars.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
Yeah. I mean, look, both of these moves could blow
up in their face. There is Carlon has more injuries,
even though there's optimism he'll be fine. James Harden, he
hasn't had a good playoff showing throughout his career, and
he has to share backcourt duty with Donovan Mitchell. You know,
he has shown that he's able to coexist with other
point guards, but there's always a certain limitation to that,
(19:10):
and so, yeah, that's very well might not work out.
But I think what both sides concluded is that the
alternative is that the Clippers just barely make the play
in tournament. They don't have as much cap space for
next season, and the Cavs they're an early playoff out
because they've been underachieving this season, so doesn't guarantee anything,
but at least improves their odds relatively speaking, you know.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
And it's weird because I very rarely use the phrase, Hey,
the Clippers had a big win with this, but I
feel like they did, like because forever they're building around
players who are in their mid thirties, which you're not
going to win a championship on, but they couldn't get
away from it. Now they exchange James Harden for a
guy who's ten years younger. Yes, he has had problem
staying healthy. But if he does stay healthy, I think
(19:56):
they were the big winner in this trade because I
don't know anybody that said, hey, let's go get James Harden.
We think he's going to be great in the playoff.
You're going to be exhausted by the playoffs every year
for James Arden. That's how it goes.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
Yeah, And I think with what Darius Garland looks at
this is it's a fresh opportunity because even though he
and Donovan Mitchell co existed fine and there weren't turf
battles of oh I want to handle the ball, I
want to score, playmake, they had to share that. And
he's his natural position is playing at point guard. So
I think that you'll get a better version of him
(20:27):
than what you saw in Cleveland. That's point number one.
Point number two. With his injuries, they're toe injuries. It's
not you know, hamstring knee issues. Injuries that have to
have load management. And he's younger. So while there are
a lot of fair short term questions on okay, he's
not playing right away until after All Star break and
what's the integration process is going to be, this is
(20:49):
more of the long term play because again, you know,
they started out I think six and fifteen, and they've
been on a tear lately. But it's really just saying
them up to be a playing tournament team or you know,
somehow some way get in as a six seed, but
just be a speed bump out in the first round,
and that's it. It's really about next season to try
(21:10):
to see can they load some younger talent around Kawhi
Leonard so that he actually has a fighting chance to
win a championship, because ever since he joined the Clippers,
it's always been one thing after another of this crazy
combination of his own injuries, another teammates injuries, or just
underachieving performances all around that have resulted in exactly one
(21:32):
Western Conference Finals appearance in a bunch of early playoff exits.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
Beyond that, NBA insider Mark Madina our guest here Fox
Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with Me Mike Carman. You
find them on Twitter at mar gi Underscore Medina. I
see all the CVC all of his latest clips up
there as.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Well, interviews including Q and A.
Speaker 7 (21:53):
You got a little bit with Lebron James who reportedly
you look he's going to finish the season with the
Lakers and everybody moves on. Realistically, was there a market
for him at all other than wave your no trade
and go to a bottom feeder to finish out the
year so they could sell tickets.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
Yeah, you hit it on the head. There's not really
a market because he makes fifty two million dollars a year,
even though every team went for Lebron James, even at
his stage of his career with how you know, respectable.
He's flying twenty two points seven. It's not much defense,
but you know he's a team player. It's not worth
giving up so much for that, especially knowing that this
(22:31):
could be his last year. So yeah, he wasn't going anywhere,
even though you know clearly the writing on the wall
with the Lakers and Lebron is that after this season
they're going to part ways. This has always been a
transactional relationship for better and for worker. So the next
transaction is, don't make a transaction, because a better play
for the Lakers is to try to see what kind
(22:53):
of chemistry he can have with Luca Doctic and Austin
Reeves now that he's back, and then have a clean
break this upcoming summer. Same thing with Lebron, he can
make the most of what he has. Playing with Lucas
shows that he's a team guy and taking a back seat.
And then see whether it's Cleveland or Golden State or
you know, team number three that's willing to take him
(23:14):
on a relative discount with one shot, one more shot
to win a championship. My money is on Cleveland, and
that'll be an interesting combination with Donovan, Mitchell, James Harden,
and Lebron. But I don't think anyone, including Lebron, really
knows at this point other than it's not going to
be with the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
You know. The thing is, though, looking at this trade
deadline now and you know the Lakers obviously, or Lebron
getting ahead of the oh hey, I'm going to stay
here for the rest of the rest of the season.
Was there any real activity, Was there any real potential
there teams were sniffing around, going, hey, maybe we can
make something happen for Lebron or is that just a
pipe dream?
Speaker 5 (23:51):
Just a pipe dream? I mean, I think that every
team has conversations just to see what the other team says.
But when you're looking at Lebron on it means that
you have to give up fifty two million dollars in assets,
and you know, again, this isn't any knock on Lebron.
He's not the same player as he was in his
prime of his career. But I think he's still deserving
(24:13):
of an All Star candidacy as a reserve. But you're
having to give up so many rotational pieces potential draft picks.
It's not really worth it to have him at this
stage of his career just play for the second half
of the season without assurances on what that means for
the next season. And you know, even the other thing
(24:34):
is teams might not even want to be on next
season because of the number that he's making that he
hopes to make from a salary standpoint. So yeah, I mean,
I think the conversations that the Lakers have had is
about what they can do to upgrade their wing depth
and maybe their center spot. But a lot of players
have already been left off the board with Keon Ellis
(24:54):
and DeAndre Hunter, and I don't see Trey Murphy the
third going anywhere from New Orleans, SA with Herb Jones,
And when you add all this stuff up, you know,
Najie Marshall and Daniel Gaffer from Dallas. They're not dealing
with the Lakers again after this Luka Docicch trade backfired
on them. You add all that up, there's really no
other players available for the Lakers to make even marginal upgrades.
(25:17):
So I want to be surprised that you know they'll
walk away with nothing after Thursday's deadline passes.
Speaker 7 (25:23):
Anything else that you're hearing in the offing, I mean,
they can't even get rid of Dalton Connect.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
That's too bad, Mark Williams.
Speaker 5 (25:30):
Believe me, they have tried. They have tried, but you
know what has often ended is a Dulton connect brick
three point shot.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
Nicely done.
Speaker 7 (25:38):
Any other big names that might be in the moves,
I know my bulls are getting rid of everybody.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
But anything else you're hearing on the winds, Yeah, two names.
Speaker 5 (25:48):
I mean Job Moran, he's out with Memphis. I mean,
with this deal with Jared Jackson Junior going to the
Utah Jazz, it's clear that the Memphis are just about
tearing this down and collecting assets. I don't know where
he's gone and how much he's going to get in return,
but I think clearly the right on the wall is
that the Grizzlies don't care as much about that other
than to try to hit the reset button. So he's
(26:09):
going to be dealt before Thursday. The other obviously big
name we have to pay attuch to is with the
Anasonse Decompo. If he is going to get traded, I
think it will be with the Warriors. But I don't
think that he's going to get traded because even though
the Warriors are making everyone with exceptional Steph Curry available,
I think the Bucks are of the mind of if
(26:30):
I'm going to trade my franchise player, I have to
get a haul in return, and there's a value in
waiting until this summer, you know, for them to see
potentially more offers, more competition, and more time. So I
think that Giannis stays put in Milwaukee. But that thing
can always be flawed, because that's a real game changer.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
Now, wait, let's go back to John Moran here, because
you know, the last couple of weeks, it's like, boy,
there's no market for the guy, because who's going to
give up anything. You're saying, they'll just take back bare
minimum just to just to get rid of them from
the roster. Like that's the kind of deal you see happening.
Speaker 5 (27:05):
Yeah. I mean, look, don't get your hopes up that
job Moran's going to be playing with Jalen Brunson with
the New York Necks just by trading Gershan Yabuselli. What
I'm saying with the Grizzlies is with them trading Jared
Jackson Jr. Just now to the Utah Jazz. You know
they part of ways with desbon Vane last summer. I
think that Jackson Junior deal signified they're in reset mode
(27:28):
and it's no longer about getting this huge haul for Jaw.
It's about getting best option available. But I think best
option available will still be more than what Kershawn's worth.
So he's not going in the next but he might
get pennies on the dollar elsewhere.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
We've won seven in a row. We fixed all the
defensive issues.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
It's fine, two All Stars, two players in the All
Star Game. The Santonio Spurs couldn't even get that.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Now, look, Mark, all we had to do was we
learned a lesson that every other team has learned. It's
hard to repeat his champions they're trying to repeat from
November with the Ist. They you get a little bit
of a downtick in January, and I just got to
figure out how to get past the dog days of
that we have.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
Now you used that with Mark last week. He didn't
buy that thing is fine.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Everything is fine.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
I remember Jason saying that last week, but I don't
think he really believed it.
Speaker 1 (28:21):
Now.
Speaker 5 (28:22):
I think he believes that he's going all in go
New York.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
And New York. He's on Twitter at Mark g Underscore Medina.
That's at Mark g Underscore Medina. Mark has always appreciate
your time with us, my friend. We'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 5 (28:34):
Enjoy the deadline, Jason, Mark goalways good talking and Jason
continue to enjoy the uh the end season tournament championship.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
There, I got it.
Speaker 7 (28:45):
You know it's you can enjoy the last appearance Mark
Medina on this program.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
Hi, st Champion. You know the thing he called me Mark?
Did you miss that? He said his own name, he said.
I think he said his own I don't think he
called you Mark. I think he said his own name
because I said Mark and he said Jason Mark. Though
that's what he said. I think he just said his
own name.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
Well, I have to check the videotape, all right, or.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
The audio tape because it's radio. But I got what
you're saying. That's what I got.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
Three cameras staring at you. I mean they're not on.
Speaker 1 (29:16):
I think he just I think these cameras aren't on.
Uh No, I think he just uh. I think he
just said his own name by by that instead of
saying because I said Mark, Mark, thanks a lot, Jason Mark.
Like I think he just because I said Mark, he
said Mark. He's going third person. He's like Terry Crews
in Brooklyn nine nine. Terry doesn't like that. Terry thinks
we should go over here. Terry's not happy. I think
(29:37):
that's what he was doing. Time now to find out
what's trending in the wide role of sportsman guy who's
been called the Terry Crews of Fox Sports Radio. He
often refers to himself in the third person as well.
It's Steve Disager.
Speaker 8 (29:50):
I'm convinced we're not on the air. By the way,
the NBA trade deadline is Thursday. The Clippers are dealing
James Harden to Cleveland for Darius Garland. The Cavs play
at the Slippers on Wednesday night. Memphis traded Jaron Jackson
to Utah as part of an eight player deal. Grizzlies
get three first round draft choices. The Celtics acquired Nikolovucevich
from the Bulls for Anthony Simons. Both players have expiring contracts.
(30:14):
Detroit picked up Kevin Herder from Chicago in a three
team trade. The Bulls got Jaden Ivy and for now
Mike Conley. All are in the final year of their deals.
Kawhi Leonard was added to the NBA All Star roster.
No Clippers had been selected. The game is at their
arena in less than two weeks. Kawhi is on a
US team with Lebron James, Steph Curry, Jalen Brunson, Jalen Brown,
(30:37):
Kevin Durant, and Donovan Mitchell. There's a new All Star
game format, two teams of US players, one team of
internationals in a round robin tournament. The All Star reserves
this past week had been selected by the league's head coaches.
The rosters came out tonight. There is one late game
in the NBA mid third quarter at Portland. The Blazers,
who've lost five in a row, lead eighty to seventy
(30:59):
nine over feet. Philadelphia won easily at Golden State one
thirteen to ninety four. Joel Embiid and Steph Curry set
that one out. Oklahoma City won twenty eight to ninety
two over Orlando. Shay Gilgess Alexander twenty points for the thunder.
He'd been questionable with the spring finger. At Milwaukee, end
of a five game losing streak, the Bucks beat Chicago
(31:20):
one thirty one to one fifteen. Kyle Kuzma thirty one
points his Bucks from three point range twenty three for
thirty eight. Tonight at Dallas, Cooper Flag of the MAVs
thirty six points, buts the Mavericks have lost five in
a row. Boston Beaham won ten to one hundred. Jalen Brown,
the player of the month in the East, had thirty
three points. Luca Donzich, of the Lakers, player of the
(31:41):
month in the West, he had twenty four points. Lebron
James twenty five. Is LA won at Brooklyn, won twenty
five one oh nine. Austin Reeves of LA fifteen points
off the bench. He'd been out since Christmas with a
calf injury. Atlanta one at Miami, New York won at
seventh straight and easy win at Washington. Utah ended a
six game losing streak winning at Indiana. Isaiah Collier of
(32:02):
the Jazz twenty two assists, Detroit edge Denver. In college
hoops number twenty three, Miami, Ohio is twenty three to
zero after a seventy three to seventy one victory at Buffalo.
Among the seven NHL games, Tampa Bay in overtime edge
Buffalo four to three, and it was Carolina four to
three over Ottawa. The New York Giants new offensive coordinator
(32:22):
is Matt Naggi for new head coach John Harbaugh. The
NFC tonight won the Pro Bowl Flag football game in
the Bay Area, sixty six fifty two offensive MVP, George
Pickens defensive MVP, and Twine Winfield Junior. The NFL's union
said players have no appetite for an eighteen game regular season.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft was reportedly not voted into the
(32:44):
Hall of Fame this year, same as Bill Belichick. The
Baseball Hall of Fame will induct Carlos Beltron in a
Mets cap this summer. Jeff Kent will have a San
Francisco logo, Andrew Jones a bravescat the Diamond.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
Adam Wainwright will be presenting Carlos Beltran to the Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 8 (33:00):
No, no, he won't, don't start things playoffs best. The
Diamondbacks agreed to a one year deal with first baseman
Carlos Santana.
Speaker 9 (33:08):
He turns forty in April.
Speaker 8 (33:09):
This will be his ninth major league team.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Back to you, Vegas, Tevo. The Jason Smith Show with
My best friend Mike Harmon. Coming up next, A big
story out of the NFL today, A hiring that a
lot of people don't like, but I absolutely love it,
and it's so near and dear to Mike Harmon's heart,
we can't even say that's next. Jason to Mike. Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon.
A big hiring was made today in the NFL. It's
not going to get a lot of good publicity because
it's easy to laugh at, but honestly, I like it.
Speaker 9 (33:58):
Thank you, Jason. I'm happy to be there.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
Yeah. Yeah. Alex Tischer is the defensive coordinator for the
Cleveland Brown.
Speaker 9 (34:03):
How do you know.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Well, if I knew you're up for it, I wrote
you let a recommendation, said they were giving it to you.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
He's a wizard.
Speaker 9 (34:10):
Yeah, yeah, no.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
It's good. Hey, how many how many men play on
the field at once on defense?
Speaker 9 (34:18):
Wait?
Speaker 1 (34:18):
So what how many men play on the field at
once on defense? How many? How many people?
Speaker 9 (34:21):
You're saying like during the game, right, yeah, during the game.
Speaker 4 (34:24):
Well, sometimes they have it smart in their mind to
think that twelve could be on there. But I keep
telling them eleven's are game one ones.
Speaker 1 (34:29):
Maybe okay, good, Well, here's the thing. I think for
the Browns, you should put twelve on. Sometimes thirteen.
Speaker 7 (34:36):
Well, you'd stop teams more, but that's the straight they
need that extra man on offense. Yeah well, well but
I think the offense they would that they'd find that out.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Defense probably not.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
Even though they had two Pro Bowlers this year.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, because you're so worried about you know,
they know guys would be free, because what we got
to put two guys on, Miles Garrett gotta put two
guys here. They know guys are going to they'll just
be more guys free, so it'll be okay. They won't
find out as easy.
Speaker 4 (34:58):
I was gonna use like my soccer tactic. And you
know how you take away some strikers for more defenders.
I'll just take offense away and put more defense.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Oh see that'll work too, that's good. Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. Uh.
Now Matt Naggy Mike Harmon's favorite former Bears head coach, Yeah,
has a new gig. He is the New York Giants
offensive cored.
Speaker 7 (35:19):
He was taken to the playoffs twice by Mitchell Trubisky.
M h and yeah it works both ways.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
Oh see with the Chiefs before he was not retained.
Wait a minute, but now he gets the Giants gig.
I know a lot of people hate this, but I
like this because sometimes the safe choice is the right
one in anything, whether it's relationships, career decisions, Sometimes the
(35:46):
safe choice is the right choice.
Speaker 8 (35:48):
Right.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
Oh yeah, you know, I could have been with this
person and we could have had a great life and
got married, had kids. But I took a chance with
with someone else, and boy, it turned out to not
work out. And I've up being in therapy and it's
awful and I can't get past it. Now they keep
calling my house all the time. No, Sometimes safe as okay, ah,
you know I went for the brass ring with this job.
(36:08):
I had this great job, I was making money, I
was doing okay, but I got fed this bill of
goods and I left for was gonna be this great,
big salary in the company went bankrupt in six months.
I don't have a job. Sometimes the safe choice is
the right one. And when you are building an offense
from scratch, and John Harbon knows what he's doing here,
you don't want to take chances with Jackson Dart, Molik Neighbors,
(36:30):
Cam Scattaboo, Tracy Theo Johnson, you don't want to do that.
Wandale Robinson. You need to come in and say, okay,
we're learning as an offense together. We're all young yet
a little bit of time. Last year Jackson Dart flashed,
Cam Scattaboo flashed, you know when to come with some
kind of crazy system where, oh, I know we're gonna
do this. These guys need to continue to learn the
NFL from the ground up basis. They didn't have a
(36:52):
lot of time together last year. And I know that's
what's gonna happen this year. It's not gonna be saying
we're gonna Try to do this with Jackson Dark because
I think he can do it. Try to do this
with Cam Skataboo because I think he can do it.
What are you doing? The guy needs more reps in
the NFL. They need to learn how to be pros
from the ground up. Rights everything is new for them.
Sometimes a safe choice is the right one because I
have no doubt that this offensive system. Yeah, is it
(37:14):
gonna have big time bells and whistles off to off
the jump, No it's not. But you're not trying to
win the super Bowl this year. You are trying to.
We are setting the foundation for what's gonna be a
good five to seven year run, maybe even more if
Jackson Dart is really good, where we can be big time,
deep playoff and super Bowl caliber teams. And you need
(37:35):
to start somewhere. So that's why I kind of like
Matt Naggy because I know it's not gonna be incredible,
it's not gonna be flashy, but it's gonna be functional,
it's gonna look good, and the player's natural talent is
going to take over. I think for this moment in time,
for this Giants offense, this is the right call.
Speaker 7 (37:50):
Yeah, I think it's one of those situations head coach
versus coordinator, and unfortunately you hit a point in Kansas
City one. You add the big injury obviously with Mahomes
being taken up, but even the last couple of years,
you haven't had that same level of consistency, and offensive
line is taking a step back. There's myriad reasons for
(38:11):
what went wrong in Chiefsdom, not to mention chiefs Ahulic
and his own escapatees, but Matt Naggy becomes not necessarily
a fall guy because they fixed the glitch. The contract
was up and lo and behold, Eric b Enemy had
an opportunity to come back home. Guess what, You're gonna
go back and try to relive those glory years if
(38:32):
you can. A guy that lights the fire under people's
ass Mahomes comes back. You still need to make a
bunch of pretty big roster changes there. But for Matt Naggy,
we've seen it go back to when Trubisky got them
to the playoffs. A couple of times he completed two
thirds of his past attempts two to one touchdown to
interception ratio.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
It's not flashy.
Speaker 7 (38:52):
The big thing is get the ball out, Get it
into playmaker's hands and keep your ass out of the
blue tent.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
Jackson Dart.
Speaker 7 (38:59):
That's what Matt Naggy is charged to do because the
rest of it will fall into place. As you watched
for so many years in Baltimore. For Naggy, it's you know,
you go back to where your best strength is with
a coach that is going to want to run the
football and get back to basics.
Speaker 1 (39:18):
Safe choice could be the right not always, but this situation,
this moment in time, safe choice, right choice. With the Giants,
everything they've done so far this offseason has them on
the upswing. They're gonna be a problem in the NFL
for the next five to seven years. Exit out about
a Fresca Exit Swollen Dome. Jason Smith Mike Carmon Live
from the Fox Sports Radio Studios. We got more NFL
(39:38):
on the way, including the one NFL player that everybody
needs to apologize to. But coming up next, we get
back into the biggest NBA stories of the night, a
huge trade to break down, and one big question about
this trade. That's next. Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio
