(00:20):
R you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. There are times
where you just look around and go, I do not
believe what just happened. And I thought something crashed into
my apartment complex just moments ago. Uh. It turned out
(00:42):
it was perhaps the fastest earthquake we've had, but it
sounded like an explosion. I thought someone dropped a car
on top of ID feel it absolutely amazing, loud explosion.
Everybody's in the courtyard looking at each other, going whoa, whoa,
what's going on here? Like it was just like that,
It was a blink. Maybe it was caused by the
(01:06):
Louisville UCF back to back interceptions that Louisville ends up
likely winning, but completely side topic. But I didn't. I
didn't feel it where where I am, so it couldn't
have been enormous. But if it was close to you,
it they you know, they no matter how big it is,
when it's close, they feel like a big deal. Yeah,
I'm not quite sure, but you know who always has
(01:28):
an answer because he's the smartest man I know. Let's
kick it over to Steve Desager carp State me as
to exactly what the hell just happened here. I didn't
feel it either, but a minute before the top of
the hour, Carson, California. Well, I would say they're getting
ready for the Chargers this weekend, but they don't play
in Carson, California anymore. But yeah, a preliminary four point
four earthquake. I'm really amazed. That's just south of the
(01:49):
l A Airport. Yeah, this was um, it was something
like I I it was so fast I wouldn't have
believed it was an earthquake anyway. Mike Carbon, Dan buy
or Steve de Sager with you. It's Fox Sports Radio
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon. A little I
lost a cup of coffee and I think a mug cracked.
So I'm not terribly excited the way it flew off
the table, because you know, me and my caffeine Dan
(02:11):
like you and you're hot chick in. Yeah. Well, this
is the interesting part of it is because we are
broadcasting from different areas and you would be what where
where are you in regards to Carson? Are you just
south of the north? Just north of that? Okay, so
(02:33):
we were talking about but just a matter of what
just too three miles and from where I am certainly
located pretty close to you, So you get you had
a pretty good, pretty good jold Steve did not, did
you feel it's Steve? Yeah, he did not. And I'm
even further north. So obviously we just smell smoked because
(02:55):
of fires out here. So come to California everyone. One
of one of the great tourism moments that we've had
on the radio. Normally we have a high speed chase
on a Friday. Sometimes it comes past the Fox Sports
radio studios and Jason will go out to waive the
uh the hooligan that's leading the police on a chase,
(03:17):
hoping to be by the way. What we see some
of that, we we certainly have the fires. Obviously, the
political landscape has been in the news quite a bit,
but then you always get brought back to your roots
of oh yeah, those earthquakes. Mike would like to recall
the earthquake. By the way, Bruce Feldman, normally on the
college football sidelines for Fox, says, biggest earthquake I felt
(03:39):
in a while. Yeah, it just felt like an explosion
where where I am. It was. That's why what the
hell happened? According to the athletic. According to the Nice,
I was just worried that they didn't like my hot
take on you know, the Clippers or something. That maybe
someone was angered. I mean, you just don't know. Maybe
(04:00):
it's because you're making Yeah, as soon as I went
down and smirched his good name, that was the end
of it. Was angry at Maryland and Illinois. That could
have been the case they should be. I think we're
all angry at Maryland and Illinois at this point for
(04:23):
what they're perpetrating a national viewing audience. Great call, Fauston
and Petros on the call. But three three as we
get ready for the third quarter, Thanks Steve, appreciate. Louisville
did get that five win over Central Florida. So you've
got a barn burner there. That's fine. Full slate of
Major League Baseball. We've got Week two of the NFL
(04:45):
coming up, and I wanted to spotlight something that you
brought to bear this week, and it's we always talk
about it on air, Dan and trying to figure out exactly,
you know, how early is too early to start getting
into awards season and starting to rank because we like
to rank stuff. Okay, you and I have talked about
it for years, creating websites, blogs, podcasts and everything, just
(05:06):
ranking the hell out of everything in our lives, from
condiments and toppings for you know, a chicken sandwich or
a burger or any of those kind of things, uh,
into all of the obvious you know, Mount Rushmore type
situations that we do in sports. But as we look
at the NFL season in Week one, that that brought
us just a crazy number of top performances. And normally
(05:29):
it's ruled by quarterbacks, but I would argue after Week one,
there are a couple of guys that made some noise
that would at least if we were doing the week
by week. Here you get a junior MVP award, you know,
like one seventeenth the size. Uh, you'd have some defensive
players and wide receivers finding their way into the mix.
But you took it on and you're an enterprising guy.
(05:49):
You and I growing up in the age of game shows,
we talked about the prices right an our one. So
you took your love and creativity of in that space
and you created the Dan Buyer m v P Pyramids.
You can find it at Dan Buyer on Fox, on Twitter,
and buyer Grams. The reason behind this Mike really fueled
(06:13):
by the NBA and what happens in the n b
A is we talk about a player. We talked about
a couple of players, especially in January and February, even
even in December, even just two months in of of
them having an MVP season, and then what happens is
somebody goes off for a big game in Mark and
(06:33):
we immediately catapult that the MVP conversation without ever having
a conversation about that player. They have automatic It's almost
like a you know, a fast track of speed ticket
whatever you would get at Disneyland to go to the
front of the line. That's what happens in the NBA.
And I even think that sometimes the NFL you can
(06:54):
be susceptible by it. So what I figured that I
would do is I would take the m v P
race and put it into rankings are fun. They they're
nobody ever agrees to anybody rankings. But put it this way,
just put it into a pyramid, and it's even better
because now you have tears and you have rankings, and
you can look at it different ways. But really most importantly,
Mike is we start from ground zero, and that we
(07:17):
start from the beginning of the season and take all
of the data at the beginning of the year and
have this moving rankings throughout. And so I took everyone's
performance in week one and ranked them when it came
to m v P performances. And I think that if
the MVP award was handed out after Week one, the
league's most valuable player would be Kyler Murray of the
(07:38):
Arizona Cardinals. And I think that Kyler Murray's name is
probably going to be up there throughout the season. I
think he's gonna be able to put up the numbers.
But they were dominant in their win against Tennessee and
someone may say, like, wait a second, Chandler Jones at
five sacks in that game, how can Kyler Murray The
play that Kyler Murray played, that the completion he made
to Rondel Moore. That looked like a video game game,
(08:01):
like those are the moves, and to have four touchdown passes,
to have another touchdown running running, and to be able
to take advantage of those five sacks is why I
had Kyler Murray at number one. I didn't leave Chandler
Jones off. He was sixth in the pyramid. That was
on the third tier, Mike, but as it started out,
I put Kyler Murray as my NFL m v P.
(08:22):
Derek Carr was second, Russell Wilson was third on that
second tier. And now throughout the season, Russell Wilson doesn't
have a good game against Tennessee, guess what, it's likely
going to fall down, maybe even fall out of the pyramid,
who knows, depending on how everybody else does. But it's
a way that we could end up keeping track throughout
the season and not have all of a sudden these
surprise candidates just vault to the front of the line. No.
(08:43):
I like the way the way it's structured, and you
can find it again at Dan Buyer on Fox or
at Fox Sports Radio. I've retweeted it at Swollen Dome.
But going into the tiers right building our Pyramid and
Kyler Murray. I gotta appreciate the back and forth between
he and Chandler owns uh clowning out each other and
their physique and haircuts and whatever. I mean, that was
(09:04):
pretty good. Uh. Derek Carr getting a nod for his
big effort UH in that game against Baltimore and really
some curious defensive calls UH and a defense that started
to crumble. I think that's gonna be really curious to
watch uh as we flow, UH, especially this week going
up against Pittsburgh. We've talked about that game a little
(09:26):
bit before, but trying to figure out exactly what this
Raiders team is is going to be another one of those. Hey,
Jon Gruden could coach up until about week nine and
then it's all throw all caution to the wind and
it starts to fall apart. Uh. Brady obviously the big
performance against Dallas week wand great spot for him to
pile up numbers this week against Atlanta. Wilson had a
(09:48):
big week. Jalen Hurts is one of the biggest curiosities
because you know, you and I had talked about it
in our season preview episodes for the I Watch a
Flex podcast and Uh. I had no qualms about even
before I saw them take a snap that Atlanta's defense
was gonna end up bottom five. And boy that they
really live up to that hype in week one. Um
(10:11):
so now we look at Jalen Hurt tweak two, it's like,
all right, will show me right. It's like the Missouri
the show me state. Uh, and we have to get
a little more of that. You got Kansas City offense
mixed in there. Joe Mixon and the Bangles against the Bears. No,
I love I love it conceptually. And Matthew Stafford down
at ten. Uh. Good for you, Dan Buyer. You seem
(10:32):
to have watched the game on Sunday night, so you
know how it really works. When you throw against air,
you don't get any you know, Laurel Crowns for that.
It's like out running up borrow, one of those old
lines that have loved all the life. I didn't put
Jameis Winston in the top five or in the top ten.
I didn't put him in the pyramid, even though he
had five touchdowns. In five touchdowns is amazing. And it
(10:56):
wasn't that he wasn't under consideration. It was actually him
or matt do you Stafford in the end? And I
just thought, all right, who really played more of a
role in their win? And now Mike may say it's
the Bears defense, but that is not the point. The
the employeed was was that Matthew Stafford or was it
Jamis Winston? And I felt that Stafford had had a
bigger role. I don't think that you can deny Derek
(11:18):
Carr's performance on Monday Night and to make the throw
that he did at the end of the game and
recognizing it and just knowing, are I just gotta throw
this baby up like that's a signature play to take
the team down. Criticized the Ravens defense all you want,
he still got the team in field goal position to
kick that tying field goal. Uh, it was it was
Derek carrk Kyler Murray one or two. When you are
(11:39):
really debating the top spot that I felt Hurts and
Wilson had such good, solid games that you really couldn't
take them away from. Brady almost threw too much. It's
and it's it's why I put him at five. And
I don't think that you can deny Chandler Jones is
greatness in that game. So he got the six spot,
and honestly, I put Tyreek Kill ahead of Patrick Mahomes
because I think it was more of Hills plays even
(12:01):
though my homes through the ball that actually provided Kansas
City with the spark that they needed. So I put
Tyreek Hill seven of the Homes eight and yeah, Mixing
and Stafford and I and ten. There you have it
after week one. The pyramid will update that throughout the
the year. As Dan joins me, you know when Jason
goes off to wizarding school every now and again. Uh,
(12:21):
and all of those things as well as on our
I Watch Flex podcast, important stuff. We like to rank, stuff,
like to have the debates if you've got some thoughts
on how maybe this should have been adjusted. Uh, you know,
be kind. You know we're a work in progress. And
obviously you know where we want to be civil with
you as well, at Dan Buyer on Fox at Swollen
Home where you find me. Be sure to catch live
(12:44):
editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays
at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the I Heart Radio app. There we go,
getting a vibe going here on a Friday, common everybody
in the Greater Los Angeles area. It down after an
earthquake for yourself a nice tall glass of relaxation. Slide
(13:06):
on over to your radio to listen to me alongside
Dan Buyer, Mike armand Jason Smith off tonight The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Harmon. Here on a Friday, getting
ready for a week two of the NFL. Hey, Dan,
we did have another score in this game. Maryland adds
a touchdown, so we're up to thirteen. Uh. Nowhere near
that over under and certainly not the thriller you would
(13:27):
hope for with big point totals. But you don't want
plenty of games uh to get us into that world.
As we roll on at Dan Buyer on Foxes where
you find Dan, find me at Swollen Dome. Let's go
out to the hotline. Now. Welcome in a man so
so nice. He's coming back on for a second time
this week. He did it twice. It's our buddy, Jason Cole,
(13:48):
NFL Insider, Fansided dot Com editor in chief, Hall of
Fame voter, and just all around good guy at Jason
Cole sixty two where you find him on Twitter. See
that I watched him up real good uh, the John
Elway book that you can find on Amazon as well,
A Relentless Life Jaicle welcome back in It's good to
be here. And I just kind of question if you
(14:10):
were to say, you know, my carm here with my
best friend Dan Buyer, how would that go over? Right now,
Jason is at one of those Harry Potter kind of things,
celebrating a little bit of life, liberty and the ability
to go and watch watch with a symphony. I think
he would send me some of those death hexes that
(14:30):
are part of those movies. So I gotta be careful.
I don't need any evil spells being cast on me.
An okay, I sell for best. I'd sell them for
best acquaintance. That's what I would settle for any time
I could sit there. I'm good for He's Dad Buyer,
the thing with the guy in the place now on
Fox Sports Radio. Okay, we're playing it's almost like we're
(14:55):
playing clue. Okay, So so I don't relast my well
out of last night's game. Gettleman. Joe Judge isn't Joe
Judge supposed to be a special teams guy and all
about discipline and whatever else you have Eleven penalties, the
offsides controversial, what have you? But a winnable game for
(15:17):
the Giants and now everybody's pointing fingers and hates each other. Well, yeah,
after you lose that kind of game, it's things. Emotions
are going to a little tough after that one. Um. Yeah,
it's sort of like the first time in two years
where Daniel Jones people can looking at well, it's not
his fault. He didn't do anything wrong this time, And
(15:38):
that's that was sort of my takeaway there, Like Jones
looked okay, yeah, I mean, Joe Judge, this is like, um,
are you like Matt Patricia too? Um at this point
in time. I mean like this was this was a
really bad showing for him. Um and based on what
(15:58):
he is supposed to be and with the Giants went
out there and said, you know, like this is the guy.
There's no question he's got that kind of leadership, the
kind of stuff that you heard, um from people around
the league about oh, he's obviously going to be a
great coach. And meanwhile, Eric b Enemy is like, you know,
(16:19):
we're not sure about him. Yeah, like the enmy got
you know, got got passed over for that dude. That's
the That's what you kind of have to ask what
this one? What what does it say about I'm not
even worried about the off sides. But when you've got
Kenny Golladay yelling on the sidelines, and you've got the
(16:40):
rookie Tony yelling on the sidelines, um in it's week
all negative two yards that he's done. It was. It
was one thing when O. B. J did it in
New York and now it's these guys who, by the way,
to my knowledge, weren't even you know, available for parts
of the preseason for various reasons. What is that say
(17:00):
about Joe Judge? Well, that's a discipline problem number one.
Number two. It also says something about, gentleman, is you
did you did you research these guys well enough? And
I will say this, there's something about Daniel Jones reaction
and not that you know, this is not the full
(17:20):
scope of it, um, but when your receivers act like
that every once in a while. I just remember Dan
Marino when guys would get you know, when either Duper
Clayton would get that way and Duper and Clayton, you know,
could get out of control. Occasionally Maria would walk over
to them and say you want the ball, shut up,
(17:43):
and there were there were from some other words that
were thrown in there occasionally, but it was like, you know,
who are you talking to? UM, I throw the ball, okay,
So you just do what I say. And that's how
this thing is gonna go. And Daniel Jones has to
get a little bit of that, even if it's just
a look like, okay, you want to play this game,
(18:06):
that's fine, you're not getting the ball. And I just
don't know that he has that in him right now. Well,
when they had the three play drive two runs to
say Kwan Barkley, who was basically stuck in Muddy's saved
for one night run all night, it showed me they
still don't trust Daniel Jones. They bent back watching tape
of the past years and said, yeah, we're not putting
(18:27):
his ball in his hands to screw, which I thought
was kind of sad. There's a there's a little bit
of that fear of um, you know, of of letting
the ribbons. Funny because Washington had no really very little
or no fear to let Heineken. Um, there you go,
you got the Heineken. I've had a couple maybe so
(18:48):
it is a it is a Friday night. It is Friday.
It is definitely Friday night. But you know I work
on Friday night. I do your show. I don't go
to the Hogwarts show. There you go there. They had
to get a shot in at Jason, even if he's
not here, Dan, this is part from the course slap
(19:08):
fight at some point. Well you know, like like some
people work for a living, and then there's Jason Smith,
Dan Byre and for Jason Smith, what say you? Yeah? No,
Mike referenced mud and I thought it was the perfect
transition to tuck Ben Roethlisberger, because yeah, I mean, you
(19:32):
know he said everything hurt except the elbow. Do we
buy that? With Big Ben? In what they have coming
up against the Raiders on Sunday, he looked like a
horse with two broken legs. Um. Yeah. He didn't move
very well at all. And you know, I remember, speaking
of Marino, I remember this last year there was this
(19:53):
one play where he had lost his mobility so much
because of the back injury and all the other things
that he come through. It he like did this degree
turn in slow motion and then like had to just
sling the ball out of bound. It was a play
I'd never seen him in eight years, you know, like
it was the first time I've ever seen him do it,
(20:14):
and he looked like he was almost scared. And there
were moments in the opener when when I was watching
Roethlisberg where here it wasn't exactly scared, but I think
he knew that the game is moving too fast for him,
and like he's not ready for what's going on right
now and he can't get out of the way that
(20:35):
he used to, and that's a troubling thing for a
veteran player. Potential for chaos. Certainly, they're Jason Cole with
us as he is every week to Jason Switch Show
with Mike Harman, Dan Bayer and for Jason Smith tonight
one of the Marquee games this week, Jason just down
the road here at so Far we see the Cowboys
(20:57):
will have the huge crowd of fans and Jerry Jones
talking about Randy Gregory with some of the great injury
updates you'll ever get. SOFA so Far will be like
the Bee Hive, nicely done. You don't know about Cowboy
the Cowboy bee Hives? Yes, but yeah, buyer, do you
know the Cowboy bees appear on this show regularly. They
(21:18):
like they're the South African killer bees of the NFL.
Um if there's such a thing. Um, Yeah, Jerry Jones.
Jerry Jones took the South American killer bees and he
mixed them with honey bees, so that he not only
has a super aggressive bee, but he makes tons of
(21:39):
money on the side selling the honey of the concession
stands at Cowboys Stadium, which is what a T and
T stadium at least, this is this is what happens
in the NFL, and this is the kind of thing
that happens on this show. So so FI Stadium, we'll
see an influx of this entire just high just will
(22:00):
end up showing up there, which will be about as
competitive as the Cowboys I think will be in this game,
given the state of their offensive line at this That's
that's where I was going. And look, I was at
that game Bears rams right, and I brought it back
to football. See yeah, And you know that was really
well done. And when they did the whole dedication at
(22:21):
all and they're like, all right, let's talk about the ownership,
there was a message from Jerry Jones to start it.
So I no matter what he was the BONDI present
force when he came. I will be here and so far,
I have a whole sweep for being my bees. My
bees are buying a whole sweep. We're gonna be like
Brandon that sweet and and Stan Crockey has been so
(22:42):
generous as let's have that sweet for the Bees for
the entire season because we're going national with the Cowboy Bees.
We just want to let you know that and that
that's gonna be huge for us. And we do here,
uh much better than our actual team will be. Although
I have to say to you Harmon that I ticket
for this game is far more worthwhile than you're spending
(23:03):
seventy five dollars to go see Andy Dalton. Yeah, you're
You're a wonderful human being. That was that was That
was not a wise purchase. Uh, something you want to
come to see debts array of receivers because those are
actually exciting football players. Unlike anybody on the Chicago Bears.
(23:25):
I hate you and everything you stand for. I think
I think my wife put acid in my supper tonight
because I have no clue on what is going on.
That's okay, it's funny and interesting joy Byers, Like, we're
supposed to be talking about sports, are I have no
(23:48):
idea references? Wait a sect? There's yards per play? What's
going on? That's what I threw. No, I have no
problem not talking about sports, but somehow we're talking about
bees and it's Little showed up somewhere during this interview.
So that's yeah, you do not understand how this don't
(24:08):
if there's got to be at least by Byre got
kid out of the the way, Bier, you understood Little and
Bes showed up here. You get the show. That's how
the show works. Man, There's nothing there's like, why didn't
you just ride with it? You thought there was asid
(24:31):
going on? Like no, no, no, this is the show.
This is how it works. Did Andy Dalton drop in
your Redhead rankings after last week's performance or I'm just
I don't know, maybe maybe famous Redhead for her famous
Redheads for two hundred in sports, Andy Dalton um would
(24:53):
be ranked I don't know, hundred and fifty based on
other performance and I can't name three others. I was
really trying to get an analysis of the Cowboys. The
Chargers came and then we got the Redhead, right, on
the way redhead at this moment, I can think of
his click fraser maybe Bill Walton. Okay, so was Mike
Schmidt a redhead? Was why would you consider Mike Schmidt
(25:14):
a redhead? Schmidte redhead? The light? That's my that that
was he was Mike Schmidt was a bad man. Yeah,
he'd beat number one or two. Like if we're talking
about athletic redheads, if he entered into the category, like
if he was redhead eligible, I think he would be. Well,
(25:35):
where were Bill Walton? You have Bill Walton up? Do
you see a la Bill Walton or the Boston Celtics
Bill Walton who was just hanging on athletic Well, Bill Walton,
who after all of the problems with his back, came
back as an announcer and gave us all sorts of
random one liners and tales from here's my hero. Based
on based on how this segment goes, you need to
(25:58):
understand that Bill Walton is my hero. You should you
should do that. But that's it. There, there you go,
that's a transition. In fact, I'm wearing a grateful dead
shirt as we speak, having um and speaking of dropping acids.
So there you go. There you got it all comes
full circle right there, right back the buyer's wife and
her cooking. How good are the Cardinals? Oh, it's you know,
(26:27):
it's fun. I just don't think like you have to
be able to run the ball in certain situations legitimately,
not all this like, oh, let's spread everybody out really
wide and have wide line splits and try and play
angles with our quarterback. There's a certain point where you
have to line up in a fourth quarter and you
(26:48):
have to control the ball. And so we're now actually
talking real football. Why do you always do this? To me?
I just don't. I gotta get three minutes. Then I
feel like I I get an absolution for you know,
for those that are uninitiated to cowboy bees. Maybe maybe
that was three minutes that I'll have to get. It's
a three minutes of real football. I just think that
(27:08):
you have to be able to, you know, control a
line of scrimmage, control the ball at a certain point
in time, and not always fool people with the way
you're playing offense. And to me, their offense is all
about let's do this. Yeah, it's it's just hocus pocus,
(27:28):
And I don't trust it. I trust it in the
regular season, when the rules and the officiating of the
game is wide open and allows for that to be
productive offense. I don't trust it when you get into
critical games late in the season, when when it becomes
a much more physical game, ball control becomes important, and
(27:50):
certainly I don't trust it in the playoffs. But I
will say this, they have parts of that team where
you go, that guy can play and Kyler Murray, that
guy can play, Chandler Jones, that guy can play DeAndre Hopkins.
You can go down the line. They have some really
legitimate players, but philosophically like the way they play. It's
like Chip Kelly. When I remember watching Chip Kelly in
(28:13):
Philadelphia and then he went to San Francisco and Seth Wickersham,
who have great respect for one of the best writers
in the country. I can't wait to get his Patriots
book right. One of my one of my best friends,
were sitting at dinner one time in San Francisco and
he like just looked at the table. There was a
bunch of football writers there. I guess, how do you
think Chip Kelly is going to do? And in San Francisco,
(28:35):
and without it, without hesitation, I go, He's going to
be god awful because they never play physical football up front.
Everybody else was like, no, no, that that offensive work.
That's in no way, and he was gone in a year.
It was just it's an awful way to play offense.
And I think that the Cardinals are like one derivation
from Chip Kelly. I could confirm Mike Schmidt did have
(28:58):
red hair, so I can't can that's the way this
is supposed to go. See buyer, you brought it back
