require real people, someone who understand your issues and works
(00:43):
to resolve them with you. That's why I Discover offers
helpful US based representatives available two seven Discover exceptionally common
sense really ty shirt. We don't get the Mike White
open Mike White resigns with the Jets today. We don't
get the Mike White. Sorry, we're moving on. So what now?
That's this is the time to play it. There's the
time to play it. He has there's actually news with
(01:03):
him today. Do you tell me we need to run
it back. Well, we we actually do have an Aaron
Donald story coming up. So hey, for all for all
the best drops tonight. In my Carmen, we are. We
are ready and loaded with all the content we're gonna
serve up tonight. Well, we just need to hear I'm
like nine thousand times, you know, just put the feet
up and let the chips fall where they may. Wow,
(01:26):
that's a great cliche to start to get to start
the show. I'm just happy to be here. I know
it's boring write it down, So yeah, I just hope
I can help the team and got it. Try. I'm
gonna try to get like thirty of them in tonight.
And that's one right off the lots of news. The
Knicks lost on national television again. I went and I
was like that, well, but I went and they were
(01:49):
they had the lead. I'm like, cool, goes to the
television time out, I go to wash a dish and
make a cup of coffee. I come back there down six.
That's that's Nick's pass. Goodball. But you know what, I
don't care because today Jacob gram stuck out struck out
five in the first two innings, and it was glorious
watching the highlights. Oh you got shuts or yesterday. I
(02:12):
still can't believe we have both of these guys. We're
gonna win the World Series. Man, I can't believe. It's
so exciting. It's so exciting. We're gonna win everything. The
other excitement. Yeah, No, there's spawn and saying pray for rain?
Is that a cliche? Does that count? Can I put
that on my cliche meter? That can be too too. No,
(02:35):
it's like it's exciting times. We're getting ready for the
Round of sixteen, just forty eight hours away. It's only
a short slate on the NBA docket. Uh, Yokich gets
to go and try to dominate the Clippers again. Uh no,
no Lakers or no Memphis Grizzlies. But we did have
Golden State lose, so one out of three in our
(02:57):
who plays every night? Yeah, exactly, exactly. And that's why
I'm gonna give Golden State a benefit of the doubt,
because they do play every night. Because now they're not
surely as good as they were. Man, suddenly, well we
were injured, but now you guys are coming back. Yeah,
but oh suddenly Golden State is running into difficulty Steph
(03:19):
Curry not being on the courts kind of yeah, well no, suddenly,
don't get me wrong. Know, they're like the Nets now
that now the guys can't stay Now now the big
players can't stay on the floor with each other again.
And it's like, oh, we got we got Draymond back,
and now there goes step and then we'll get step
back and there goes I mean, they're they're, they're they're
the Nets West Now they just can't can't you can't
(03:39):
stay healthy. But even though we didn't have any quarterback
signings today, we still had some big quarterback developments. And
I am gonna shock you right out of the gate
with I actually have good news for Baker Mayfield. I
have good positive news for Baker Mayfield. I mean, either
(04:03):
wait a minute, wait a minute, Jason, all you do. Yes,
the guy's not very good. He he brought all his
own problems on himself. It's why he's failed in Cleveland. Yes,
but I have good news for him on a day
where that doesn't seem to be good news, right, because
what do we find out today? The couple of teams
that are left looking for a quarterback Carolina, Seattle, Pittsburgh,
we find out that the Panthers don't have any interest
(04:24):
in Baker Mayfield. They'd rather run it back with Sam
Donald then go to a Baker Mayfield sam Donald quarterback derby,
which clearly robs us as fans could who doesn't want
to see Baker Mayfield and Sam Donald battle it out
to be the starting quarterback when he's sort of Damocles
is over your neck for your job, man. If you
they can somehow find a way to to to acquire
(04:46):
Josh Rosen so the three of them could all battle
it out, that would just be awesome. Well, they did
have that positive news as well of re restructuring Christian
McCaffrey's contract to free up like five point five million dollars. Yeah,
that's that's good. That's good. But but clearly the Carolina
Panthers with Sam Donald, who has also been a failure, Uh,
they have no interest in Baker Mayfield. And now you're
(05:08):
hearing a really you're actually hearing a really bad narrative
that I hear people talking about on the radio and
on TV. Nobody wants Baker Mayfield. Nobody wants them. Everybody
can stand him, nobody wants him to play. There's no interest.
There's no market for Baker Mayfield. That is absolutely incorrect.
That is absolutely incorrect. The first part of that statement,
(05:28):
you have to qualify it because there's no market for
Baker Mayfield because he's making eighteen million dollars for next
season if and when he gets released, Because that's what's
going to happen. You talked about it last night that
the Browns aren't gonna find anybody they could trade Baker
Mayfield in a second. But nobody's gonna pay him eighteen
(05:50):
million dollars this year. But if he gets released, then
suddenly you're gonna see three or four teams that really
want him, that want to bring him. Yeah, cleve it
agrees to eat the money. Yeah, maybe he got something there,
But in terms of getting rid of that contract, no chance. No, No,
there's more than good half of the starters in the
NFL at this point. I mean, and I hear that
(06:11):
today and I go, this is this is just hatred
of Baker Mayfield without having the right frame of of
representation for it, because there's so much negative. Look, it's
tough because Baker Mayfield. You look, he's in a he's
in a bad spot. And like I said, it's all
of his own doing. He's not been good. But to
say there's no market for him, this is still a
guy who has flashed a little bit and as a
(06:32):
former number one overall pick that might need a change
of scenery and might be able to jump start his
career a little bit. And all these mightes mean that
teams would be interested in him, but just not at
this price. They're not gonna pay Mayfield eighteen million dollars
even if all we've given up as a six round pick. Yeah,
but you're paying an eighteen million. The Panthers learned that
(06:52):
lesson last year. Lad we got we got the option
on Sam Donald. We're gonna give a second, fourth and
a sixth. Oh wait a minute, we shouldn't have done that.
But when the Browns real they don't have any trade partners,
they're going to have to cut him. And so when
they cut him, then you're gonna see Carolina, Seattle, Pittsburgh,
maybe Tampa Bay. I told just one of those teams
that really wet where he should go if she really
(07:14):
wants to jump start his career. The Giants, somebody is
gonna be interested him because they'll like him at hey
here's one year and five million with a chance to
earn five or six million dollars more in incentives to
get you to ten, eleven or twelve million. So it's
not a complete slap in the face. And if you
win playing time, whatever incentives you reach, there will be
(07:34):
teams who are incredibly interested in him, but interesting in
him for that price eighteen million for a guy that's
no there's curiosities you can take a chance on, and
there's curiosities that listen. That's just too much for us.
It's it's a nonstarter. And that's you're finding out right now,
because that's how it's gonna work. Because Mayfield is going
to find out that, all right, maybe people like me
(07:56):
a little bit more. And if Carolina doesn't want to
get involved in that, that I kind to understand because
like that, Donald's kind of the same guy as Mayfield is.
He's he's a you know, former topic same year that
flashed a little bit but really hasn't played well. We
got one of those guys, do we need another one
of those guys? But a team like Seattle who was like,
well we got Drew Lock right now, and Gino Smith
(08:16):
and I think Jim Zorn. Uh. So, yeah, let's bring
Baker Mayfield in for the competition aspect, because I told
you Seattle could be a great destination for him, because
that's what Pete Carroll preaches. He preaches competition. He preaches
that you have to go out and win your position
every day, and that's big. That's what might appeal to
Baker Mayfield. That would be some way for them to
kind of see if they can fill their position a
(08:37):
quarterback with a couple of options. Pittsburgh, I bet would
get into it. Hey, come on, come, but you want
to get back at Cleveland. Come play here, Come play
in my system, and you listen to Mike Tomlin, who's
a strong head coach, and you come here and you
battle it out with Mitchell Trobiscite and now he's Mitch
and let's see how it goes. And you get to
play Cleveland twice a year. That's a big deal. The
Giants are a big deal. They like Daniel Jones, they
(08:59):
don't like him. That day, We're hoping Russell Wilson's gonna say, hey,
I want to go play there. No, so yeah, they're
gonna be looking for other options besides Daniel Jones. They
were close with Rubinsky, right, Drabinsky said, hey, I had
a choice, and the Giants were the second team, and
he said, no, I want to go to Pittsburgh instead,
felt he had a better chance because it was more
wide open to win the job, whereas the Giants you
have to take on the incumbent and Daniel Jones. So
(09:21):
I get why he picked Pittsburgh there. But if you're
a Baker Mayfield, now you know that you're coming in.
If Daniel Jones doesn't play well, you're gonna get that chance.
You play well in the preseason, you get that chance.
So there will be those are gonna be the teams
that are gonna get involved for him. They will get
involved fast. It will be a not quite a bidding war,
but as soon as he gets released, there's gonna be
a lot of contact and there will be a contract
(09:42):
very quickly because Mayfield's gonna pick because he's very emotional.
He's gonna pick the place where he thinks I can start,
I can get back at the Browns, I can do
all of these things. It will be a really fast
resolution and he will have a new team and have
a chance to play and compete for the number one
job at one of four teams across the league. Book it. Yeah,
I think one the big things that's gotten lost in
(10:02):
this is the fact that the you need a team
that also has either a coach that's just getting started,
so a splash is good. Right. That's where Brian Dable
kind of comes in. He's the the hot name. Look
what he did with Josh Allen. He's trading with a
bit of a not quite a carte blanche, but with
(10:22):
a very long leash. If we're gonna use those terms
right to where he can gamble and see if Baker
comes in, if he needs to, if he decides he
doesn't like what he's seeing in Daniel Jones as they
get ready to embark, you know on the preseason and everything.
The other is, you know, you've got coaches that have
legacy and so the security, which again are very few
(10:45):
in the National Football League. Right, we talked about organizational
stability being one of the hallmarks of successful organizations, and
we we don't have a lot of those. And then
we have some that are trying to find lightning in
the bottle a second time, and we look straight at
Pete Carroll when we talk about that, you know trump temperament.
I heard um Joe Thomas mentioned, uh Detroit, just saying
(11:10):
wouldn't Baker and Campbell in a room together just be fun? Like? Yeah,
the problem is you're paying the other guy. You got
what dollar dead gap it on Jared Goff, So yes,
unless it's bargain basement, this guy is costing us nothing
but incentives. He's not showing up there and just go
on down the line, right which coach is willing to
(11:33):
lay out and and put themselves on the line or
in the front office as well. So Baker, I think
sits a while, right. There's there's no thing in any
of this timeline that forces a move right now, I
think you can have you can play the waiting game
a little bit. Look, obviously, Jimmy Garoppolo. Everybody's just interested
to see how he recovers and then we'll see how quickly.
(11:56):
Maybe with Trey Lance and whatever, there there can be
some some opening up there, But he he's another story
for another time. With with Baker at eighteen million dollars,
you're just not bringing it in. You've got too many
other needs to to give up that much space on
a guy who probably isn't your starter, and let's face it,
his arrival probably isn't going to be the easiest thing
(12:20):
to sell to a lot of locker rooms. Well, it
depends if he's coming in to battle for the job
and there's not a quarterback that they believe in. Now
that I I think that would wind up. Okay, Hey,
this is your second chance. If you play well, great,
If not, we all know. Like if he comes into Seattle,
they know that. Hey, if he plays better than Drew lock,
(12:41):
all right, then that's a that's a win for us.
He's the guy. If not, maybe he gets cut, maybe
he's a backup. It's all right, it's not the deeger
coming in. Hand it to him, and maybe this would
be better for him because you know he likes to
push that. Hey, I'm a guy that was a walk on.
I fought for everything I've had in my entire life.
Maybe you need to fight for something. Maybe you need
to fight for this darting job. And that brings back
(13:01):
the quarterback you used to be there. There's lots of
there's lots of potential upside with it where I don't
know that he'll walk into a locker room and suddenly
there's so much baggage that it's all this guy is
is we really can't have him. I see there being
a little bit more positivity as teams need quarterbacks, says,
Let's face it, if you're one of those teams we
just talked about, if you're the Giants, you're the Seahawks,
(13:22):
you know you're even you know, look, Carolina said, no,
if you're Pittsburgh, you you would bring in a lot
of other guys to say, hey, come on, man, hell
we we need a little bit of help. I know
there's not a lot out there, but okay, uh, if
you you know, if my wife sends me to the
store for avocados and I walk in and there's only
four avocados left and two of them are bad, I
gotta buy the other two avocados because you know what,
there's not a fousand other avocados I can choose from,
(13:45):
but she needs avocados. I gotta get those avocados. Now
I want quacamole. Okay, Well, I mean you could probably
make that happen. The larger thing here is everybody's got
a price, right, and where's that intersection between all right,
he's been cut and what we can to go? She
eight and what his expectations are. Right, because this is
really going from look at the national commercials, right part
(14:07):
of the overall presence of Baker Mayfield number one overall
pick you win a playoff game, you're revered in Cleveland,
still are to a large degree. But you haven't had
a lot of teammates come saying, wow, they really did
this guy wrong or anything. Seems like a few you
guys would have gone on the record, uh in that regard. Uh,
No disrespect to Deshaun Watson and his playing ability, but
(14:30):
certainly his circumstances. Like all right, this guy may be
a little bit ornery and have some problems, you know,
dealing with management, coaches and teammates versus what's behind door
number two that we still don't know. And likewise with
Baker going to anywhere else, you know, remembering that guy
that had to fight all those years ago? Could it
(14:51):
be that right? Because the guy immediately get back to that,
Oh he needed to be humbled. So it'll be curious.
Twitter at a about a Fresca, Mike gets swollen dump
starting off with Baker Mayfield positivity, who knew? Who knew?
Mike Harmon and obviously look you can claim him. You
can go through that process right because he gets released.
(15:14):
It's waivers. But anyway, we'll we'll talk about Baker Moore.

up in a couple of seconds, because, boy, great develop
leapments with Jimmy Garoppolo today. There's no more developments for
a guy who's not gonna play for months. But every
day it's Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmie Jimmy. But tonight we had
(17:09):
a night in the NBA where one team, specifically, uh, you,
has to enter a new reality. Oh how did it
end tonight for that team? Well, when you take on
the Orlando Magic, who are way worse than the Knicks.
I mean, like really worse than the Knicks. You need
to bring your a game and this is the damn
(17:29):
night you have issues. How did it end for the
Warriors tonight? There is magic in Orlando tonight Jamald Maslin
in Orlando box of Steve Burr's Golden State of Warriors
tonight against the final score, Magic with the wind. Make
it three losses in a row for Golden State, who
(17:51):
not only now finds themselves in third place by a
couple of games over the surging Memphis Grizzlies and m
v P John Morant. Uh, they're now only a couple
of losses from falling into fourth place, and potentially, if
they don't get it going, they could wind up falling
out of that into fifth place because the Mavericks, who
were playing really well, are only three games out. And
(18:13):
you know, for Golden State here here's the thing, like
there is no more all or nothing team in the
NBA and the Warriors right because clearly, look they have injuries.
I'm not saying, oh, this is what's happening. When Clay
came were great until Clay came back on look what happened. Yeah,
he really screwed up all of the everything, although it
really is you do look back at their record and
(18:33):
go boys, since Clay came back, they haven't been the
same team. Oh, I don't know, but look, clearly there's
been a lot of injuries. Draymond Green, who rededicated himself
to the NBA. Look, when we talked about the the
the Warriors the beginning of the season, we told you
there's three big reasons for them and and why they're
playing so well. One of them was Draymond Green loves
basketball again or whatever it is. He's decided I'm gonna
(18:56):
try and he was terrific. But then he got hurt
and he was out for a while. And now Steph
Curry's out, and it's is he gonna be back for
the playoffs? Maybe? Maybe not? Is gonna be back for
the first round? Sometime during the first round. Right now,
it's all positivity for Golden State, but clearly it's Hey,
they're hoping to have stepped back for the playoffs, which
means this is gonna be a while. Now, it's gonna
(19:19):
be a little bit more before they bring him back. Now,
if he comes back and he is healthy, I have
no concerns for the Warriors. Right, if they're healthy coming in,
they'll be in the Western Conference Finals. They'll they'll beat
Memphis when it comes to it, because they're they're just
too too good all around. Uh, and they'll wind up
playing the Suns, and there's your Western Conference Finals. But
if not, that's a team that can lose in the
(19:40):
first round. They can lose to Utah in the first round.
They can lose to Dallas in the first round. They
can lose to the Mavericks, they can lose to the
Nuggets in the first round. Because all those teams are
better than they are when they're not right, when they
get all their players going, and they found a way
to make it work this year, and it's great. They
One of the other reasons why they were so good
is they figured out their support player. Is they have
(20:00):
bench players who really fit their scheme. The explosion of
Jordan Pool in his third year. Look, all things we've
been talking about for months that you're hearing other people say,
congratulations on the take. Uh, these are all reasons why
so when when they're that team, Yeah, they're that good,
but without we're talking about some of the big cogs
in this thing, they could lose in the first round
to one of those teams, because these these are the teams.
(20:22):
You're getting to the point now at the end of
the season where you're seeing the really good teams playing
better basketball and getting into the playoffs on an upswing
and the others trying to tread water. Here now they're
treading water because of their injuries. But there's no more
all or nothing team. They can go to the Western
Conference finals. They can lose in the first round to
any of those three teams. I just said, yeah. I mean,
we talked about how important Jordan's pool has been in
(20:44):
his rise this year for them, Draymond coming back emotional
uh and giving them the lip. But look at their
last last runs here. You had one in seven, right,
the one in seven stretch, and then they won four stretch.
It's like, all right, things are back on track step
even with the injury. It's like, all right, they're figuring
out rotations and they're picking up. And then they lose
(21:05):
three straight. And when you talk about the playoffs seating
to your point of you're not getting the free pass,
as it were, in other words, the cupcake that would
be coming out of the playing rounds or at least
the lesser opponents. I don't want to disrespect, you know,
the t Wolves and Clippers because they've they've fought hard
all year. And then you've got the Lakers and the
(21:26):
Pelicans and in nine and ten, UH, and Laker fans
be mad at me. I don't care, uh the but
all of a sudden, you you slide behind. You talk,
you're only two games ahead of them, three games ahead
of the Mavericks. It's still a gap to the Nuggets.
So I don't think there's enough time to fall back there.
Nuggets playing as we speak with an eleven point lead
(21:47):
on the Clippers at the half. But if you you
fall down and you're not able to get one of
those um better more advantageous matchups as you're trying to
get Steph Curry back into shape, UH, it could be
a quick exit to your point. You know, we talked
about him very early in the season, you know where
where Phoenix and in Golden State with their runouts to
(22:09):
start the year in Phoenix. I mean, it's just been
nothing short of fantastic all season long, even with Chris
Paul missing UH substantial time. At this point, UH now
sitting at fifty eight wins, which is just absurd, uh
given their level of efficiency with winners of five straight.
So uh, we're we're coming down the stretch to it's
winning time and emotions are starting to run high, which
(22:31):
is makes for great radio for us, great sound bites, uh,
and great content, no question. Now it's hard to blend.
I'll say this before we get onto Jimmy Garoppolo. Look,
it's hard to blame Clay Tompla. Clay has come back
and he has scored. But whatever, you know, I think
back to Jake Glazer. You know, remember when I remember
having Jay on when we were talking about the Eagles
(22:54):
right back back that we because we mentioned Carson Wentz
last hour, that when Carson Wentz played for the Eagles,
you know, things are okay. Nick Foles came in and
it's how is Nick Foles this good? Right? How is
Nick Foles this guy? How are the Eagles playing so
well with Nick bleep and Folds? What is it? And
I'll remember Jay Glazer saying to me, you know what,
here's something that's crazy in the NFL is that as
(23:17):
as good as Wentz has played for some and this
is this is getting into the second season when when
Foles was in the next year coming off the Superheroes.
But for whatever reason, the team runs better with Nick
Foles a quarterback. Right, None of the metrics makes sense, right,
because Carson Wentz is a better quarterback, better pedigree, you
see the talent he's there. Nick Foles is a backup
(23:38):
who when he's gotten his chance, he has played okay
at times, but clearly you know it's still Nick Foles.
But for whatever reason, when he was the quarterback, the
team played better. Right. And now I look at the
Warriors and I go it. You know, it's not Clay
Thompson's fault because look, Clay is still a great player.
You've seen him have big games come back for the Warriors.
But before Clay Thompson came back, the Warriors were twenty
(24:01):
nine and nine. Right. Without Clay Thompson, they were twenty
nine and nine. Since he's come back, yes, they've had
issues and Draymond's gotten hurt and Curry got hurt, all
all this has happened. But since he's come back, there
eighteen and sixteen, right, and I kind of think the
same thing. It's not his fault. But for whatever reason,
(24:21):
the Warriors had it working before Clay Thompson came back.
And since he came back, while he's come in and
he's scored and he's not he's not had bad metrics
at all. It's not like suddenly you can point to
and go, oh, hey, his defensive deficiency is a reason why.
But for whatever reason, they were playing much better before
he came back. And you talk about injuries and lots
of different things, but good teams are usually able to
(24:42):
overcome one injury to be able to keep winning. Right,
whether Chris Paul plays or not, the Sons keep beating
teams right, makes no difference. They keep winning when with
with Ben Simmons or no Ben Simmons. The Sixers won
this year. Now they got James Harden back. But certain
good teams they can withstand an injury and keep winning.
And the Warriors haven't been able to do it. And
when I remember when Clay Thompson came back, and so
(25:03):
this is gonna be perfect. They're gonna put Lay Thompson in.
He can come off the bench because Jordan Pool has
been blossoming for whatever it was. But now you see
they're struggling and they're trying to find the right way
to go and like I said, it's not Clay Thompson's fault,
but what's the one common denominator? They started off twenty
nine and nine, Since then they're eighteen and sixteen. Um, yeah,
I think you have to look and go where other
(25:24):
people are other players? Did they lose some of their effectiveness?
Are they overall still as effective as they were now
that you move things around and Jordan Pool is no
longer having the impact that he had coming on, It's
it's it's a legit question. And again this is you know,
this is not hot takery that Clay Thompson's awful, but
it's just okay. You can look at what a record
(25:45):
is before a guy came back and a record after
and go okay, maybe maybe there's something to that, like
the Jake Glazer. For whatever reason, they seem to play
better without Clay Thompson than they did since he's come back.
Everybody trying to figure out there there rolls and rotations
and shot selection all a bit different. Brian Fenley played
it in the update we want to bring it back
(26:06):
here a t Can you give me the Draymond Green
from the post game? I think we're playing sauce we're
playing stupid. Um, it's just playing good basketball and we're
getting talked. So, you know, it's hard to win a
game getting tunk. That's kind of where we are right now.
(26:28):
That's not the greatest summary statement as you possibly can, Stephen.
We have to learn how to win right now. We
don't know how. So you got guys looking at each
other trying to figure out exactly how the hell they
navigate these final ten games and into the playoffs. It's
it's it's really difficult, and it's hard because they're so talented, right,
I mean, this is a team that's got a lot
(26:48):
of players, and you know, look they're still wait, they
were still waiting for guys to come back when they're
twenty nine and nine, and now James Wiseman still doesn't exist.
I know, he still hasn't even come back yet. He
was a guy that was so important, you know what.
Andrew Wiggins had the big push to be at an
All Star and he played pretty well. But now he's
still at seventeen to a game pool at seventeen three place.
(27:09):
It's coming backs at eighteen and Steph was at five.
Otto Porter has given him some good minutes. Gary Payton
Junior at points, and it's just it's just not working
right now, just in a month, month long rut as
it were, you know. And and it's not like they
haven't had either of these guys, because look, they had
(27:30):
Draymond for parts of this and they couldn't win. They
had Curry all the way up until a couple of
games ago, and they couldn't win. And now you know,
now the Curry's out pool is back starting you scoring
game right, So now sudden, hey I'm back, man, you
gotta give me a bigger role. Now, maybe that's what
it is. Maybe it's maybe it's it's time for Steve
Curtis say, okay, let me try something different here and
see what works. Because to think you're just gonna suddenly
(27:51):
get back to it, okay, yeah you could. But in
the end, if you don't like how do you how
do you figure this out? I mean, if they're healthy,
I feel good about them because they're that good a team.
But in the end, when when when you're pointing to
differences and why, you know, they haven't been able to
overcome things and and and they've not just not been good,
they've been an average team, you know, since Clay Thompson
(28:12):
came back. It's it's just a weird dynamic to look at.
And it's all I said. It's not about blame anywhere,
but it's okay when here's your one common denominator, don't
you kind of have to look at that a little
bit and go is everybody? Are we still getting as
much from everybody that we were before? And and maybe
I have to do a little bit of adjusting and
moving things around to maybe get us to our to
our ultimate uh peak. Because hey, if Steph comes back
(28:36):
and he scores thirty a game because he's pissed and
he's all right, great, then that that's gonna cover a
lot of ills. But boy, this is kind of really
showing you that there's some stuff going on with Golden State. Man.
It's really it's all or nothing for them. Fox Sports
Radio The Jason Smith Show with my bas friend Mike Harmon.

why I Discover offers helpful US based reps. Available twenty

(29:19):
What's happening, man? How are you? I'm good. I'm good.
I'm good. How you gotta do it good? I'm just
figuring out a way good Jets to compete in the
a f C next year because I think we're gonna
lose like thirteen games again because all the other teams
are getting better quarterbacks than us. So that's that's where
I'm at right now. Look, man, it's a challenge because
a f C has come to the realization that you
(29:39):
need an A plus quarterback to be able to compete.
And what you've seen, I believe, in a direct reaction
to what we saw in the playoffs, if you do
not have a top novel quarterback, it's going to be
hard to compete. When you see patcheck, Mahomes and Josh
Allen duke it out. When you see Joe Burr the
decisionated being with other dogs to a super Bowl, when
you see Matthew Stafford made play after plate who helped
(30:01):
the Rims win it, I think you've had a lot
of people in front off and saying I cannot continue
to exist with just the media to quarterback. I need
to have a five star playmaker in that position. Look
at you with no quiver in the voice thought, because
I mean, you know, he's got a big matchup this
week against u c l A. And he was all
nervous on Sunday. Bucky, you're good men. I'm so nervous, man,
(30:23):
the big bad bullies from u c l A take
on my stario. I just hope that we somehow can
keep it competitive with the legacy and the memory of
John Wood and all those great U c l A players.
I am shaking in my boost, just worried about she
and U c l A run out there with those
white jerseys. I don't know how we gonna compete, man,
I don't know how to compete poor little North Carolina.
(30:44):
Wow that you know that that that's a coach. You
want to say, you know we're gonna kick your ass.
But I'm gonna come out and say, like, hey, I
don't know how we're gonna compete. I don't know that
the jerseys are intimidating. I don't know what we're gonna
do and then behind closed doors, going We're gonna kick
the crap out of these guys. They don't pull on
on the same corner as you. I get you, Buck,
I get you. Understand what you're doing there. I see
(31:05):
what you're trying to pull off. No, no, no, I'm
just saying I'm just lucky that it's not in Paul
Pavilion with all those banners hanging up five like, I'll
worry about my little day's getting all nervous and scared,
you know, like, well, as long as they don't pick
up their dribble after dribbling to a corner, it'll be okay.
So you and I on Sunday, we were watching the
quarterback carousel go around. Uh we got into Deshaun Watson
(31:28):
quite a bit, but one that came out thereafter was
the Matt Ryan to Indianapolis. I'm kind of bullish on
the move. Smith's not so much where to say you, Oh,
I love it. I love the move And if you
had a chance to listening to Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan
talked about how I had been influence and impact about
Payton Manning and how they develop a relationship and how
(31:49):
he's trying to live it to the legs for you
of Peyton Manning and Johnny United. The one thing that
the Indian athletis Coats are getting and they've had success
with it. They're getting what I call a mature player
at the position, meaning Matt Ryan has done all the
things that you want to do individually. He's been an
m v P, He's led a team to Super Bowls.
Right now, he's solely focused on winning and add that position.
(32:10):
The one thing that you're looking for in your field
general is someone who is consistent, someone who's dependable, and
someone who's reliable. When you think about Matt Ryan, I mean, look, man,
he may have what ten four thousand plus yr season,
he's only the three games in his career surrounded with
the right mix. He played at the m v P
level and led his team to a super Bowl. If
(32:30):
you're the indianap of his coat, you're kicking yourself. Uh,
you pis yourself because you gotta upgraded the position that
you didn't think was possible. You know, a couple of
weeks ago, we were wondering who are the Coast going
to play with the tryps ballot? And those guys waited
patiently and they were able to get. Look, man, a
quarterback who was perfect for where they're at. Um he
doesn't have to make every play. He just needs to
(32:51):
make a handful of play each week for them to win.
That's a perfect scenario. Four quarterback was an aging quarterback. Yeah,
but here's the thing, but you just talked about what
all the quarterbacks they have ce He's not gonna win
a battle in the in the playoffs against any of
those guys. I feel like that they got. They went
out and they got the best guy they could. But
I don't know how much it's gonna change their fortunes
because Matt Ryan, every metric has been down from him
(33:13):
the last four years. Yeah, but that's hem has been
terrible too. I mean, let's be honest about the Atlanta Falcons.
They haven't been right such a super Bowl because they
had to hangover after loving a twenty to three leads.
Now you get a quarterback who look, I mean, the
team is not necessarily built to run through the quarterback,
but if you have a quarterback, it certainly helps them
do what they want to do. We've seen with Frank
(33:34):
Wright convened do let's not forget what do you do
with Philip Rivers. Remember Philip Rivers couldn't throw the ball
as far as you and Mike Harmon sitting beside each other,
and they still had an opportunity to go to the playoffs.
And so now you have someone who physically can make
some play, who has the mind and the professionalism to
kind of get some of the young players on the
(33:55):
right page. I think he gives them a chance. No,
he's not as talented as those top guys they we've seen,
but surrounded by the right toil we've seen to play
at the m VB level, I wouldn't put a passer
playing at a high level. Well. I also like that
Odell Beckham Jr. Was talking about, So that could be
fun if he decides he doesn't want to be a
ram anymore. So that potential sits there. But you know,
obviously they got that left, and there's still I don't
(34:18):
think there's a chair right now. Is Baker Mayfield right?
All of these speculation of what happens with him eighteen
million dollars, I think he gets cut before anything happens here. Bucky. Yeah,
I don't know who trades for him, because here's the
problem with Baker Mayfield and it's not his fault. It
is fortunately the fault of the Cleveland Brown. When you
(34:38):
overdraft the quarterback a guy who is number one overall
and he gets to the point where he's making the
money that he's making eighteen million dollars in the fire option,
what you're doing now is because the quarterback money has
just exploded, you're now looking at your quarterback and saying,
if we have to resign Baker Mayfield at some point,
we may have to pay him forty million dollars. Is
(34:58):
he a forty million dollar quarterback? Based on what we're
saying for Pat Mahomes and Josh Ellon and those guys,
I would say no. So now what you're having is
you're not going to have a middle class for the quarterbacks.
You're gonna have the high end quarterbacks, and you have
the guys that are playing on the Rocky deal. Baker
Mayfield gets caught in between. So what he is going
(35:19):
to have to do is start back at square one
and build his way back up to potentially being a
franchise quarterback. It's a hard job, but I don't know
how anyone can view him as one of those elite
guys when he had everything that you could possibly have
with the Cleveland Brown quarterbacks off as a lot of
running game defense, and he still wasn't able to show
(35:41):
people that he was a high end quarterback. That's tough.
That's NFL scout Bucky Brooks, NFL Network, Fox Sports Radio,
whether it's here, the Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen,
all right, Bucks. So from the guys that are already
in the league to the guys trying to get there,
we saw a great pro day today from Reliq Willis.
We saw Kenny Pickett is doing whatever hand exercises to
get that right hand more than just eight and a
(36:03):
half inches between his fingers. How did your quarterback board
look right now? Top three guys? I mean right now,
like mcarrell will work out tomorrow. Right now I have
Kenny pick and McCarrell believe with a Desmond Ritter and
Sam Howell. But I would be honest with you. I
think the league told us everything that we needed to
think about the quarterback class when right after the commonline,
(36:26):
after I was so excited to see those guys throwing,
we saw two straight weeks where there was a quarterback
traded every day to do the thing so the Nastal
Football let us know immediately what they thought about the class.
I was waxing, so ed, I was doing my best job.
All these quarterbacks are so great, and all the guys
(36:47):
were like, yep, uh, let's trade. Carson went, she's gonna
be a quarterback at Washington. Let's see the Wilson go
Aaron Rodgers, you resigned, And so that's what they think.
So these guys are there's some challenge in this class,
but I think everybody do these guys that developmental guys.
I don't know if anyone do this class as having
one that has franchise quarterback immediate franchise quarterback potential. And
(37:10):
so because of that, everybody wanted to make sure that
they had a stop gap in place, a better at
quarterback that could start some games. And then if the
young got surprised, yeah they can take the ball. But
I don't know if we'll see any of these guys
in this class getting the ball from day one and
be the starting quarterback four teams. How much should that
(37:30):
extra eighth of an inch of the hand size for
pick at work for you there, Bucky? I mean it
was nice. I mean it was that he's continued to
grow that he's done a good job of stretching his
hand out. The big issue when you have Kenny Pickett
and the hand size because everyone jokes a scouts watching
a lot of fumbles, Yeah yeah, thirty career fumbles. And
(37:52):
then when you had a chance to see him in
inclement weather in the Senior Bowl, he had a tough
time throwing the ball like driving it with consistency. So
the issue is more so is he going to continue
to have a funding problem because remember I want to say,
people gave Danior Jones the tough time about some of
that stuff. He's been a little bit of a turtle
machime when it comes to the fumble. It only matters
when you see tangible evidence on tape that it could
(38:16):
be an issue very career fumble, suggest that maybe there's
an issue with him holding onto the ball, his balls,
and you he is not necessarily what you want. You know,
I always look at stuff like this, Buck and I
make the new car comparison where either when you go
to buy a new car, either you want to be
convinced that this is the car for you or you
want to be able to say, no, this is not
the car for you. And when I look at things
(38:37):
like hand size or how it got thought, I think
that's where you walk in and you either want to
be have something like this, convince you this is the
guy to take or to say no. That's our reason
to say no. That's kind of how I look at
the interviews of the combine in the pro days. Because
if you like Malik Willis and you saw him at
the pro day and you talked to him and said,
oh my god, we gotta this gives us a reason
(38:57):
to say yes because I really like him. Meanwhile, confer
sleep for a guy like Kenny Pickett, if you were
on the fence, all look at his hand size. Oh
it's too small. It's another reason for us to say
no if we were on the fence on him. That's
kind of how I look at at how these developments
go on. Oh yeah, that's what all this stuff is, right.
I mean, look, I know what we said. If the
draft was closed to the end of the season, the
(39:18):
guys who get picked the order would change. But because
we have so much time at scouts, we just get bored.
We have to figure out something to talk about, right,
we have to have something to pick up board we
we're just but we have all this time. And so
what happens is the All Star Games, the combine, the
Pro Day workouts and all this stuff that is confirmation
of whatever it is that you believe. Right, So you
(39:40):
go to the Pro Day looking for, hey man, this
guy can play and said, oh you see that throw.
I told you that's what it is, and that's what
this is. And ultimately you want to make the decision
based on how the guy played on tape. But it's
a crap shoot. And so the guys who have picked
at the Rams for giving up all their draft packs,
maybe they're onto something because this is really hard to
turn picks and the prime time players. And I think
(40:03):
what you're seeing at these pro days is the difficulty
in the challenge of trying to identify which players are
really gonna pop into their club. So we got a
month to try to figure it out, Bucky, you and
I on Sundays, and in the interim, you still have
to sweat out your North Carolina targue. So I mean,
I know it's gonna be a rough week. Can dissecting
tape while worrying about that and see like harmon because
(40:24):
you know me, so well, like I'm sleeping right now.
If you can, if you can, just think about me,
I'm sleeping. I got my my blanket and covers all
the way up to my neck, and I'm just scared
to death. I'm waiting for the boogeyman. Do you feel
the boogeman to come out of the closet and scare me?
Last night I woke up in a cold sweat because
I feel like Nick Tronan would yell at me to
get back on defnit. So I just don't know what
(40:46):
I'm gonna do with the ruin. I just hope we
somehow can keep your clothes. That's all over there. We
can give your clothes. Just give humor a couple of
tips again, break the press, don't pick up your trifles.
You can follow by Twitter at Bucky Brooks. That is
at Bucky Brooks all the latest stuff. Buck is always buddy,
(41:07):
appreciate your time. Man, We'll talk to you. That was in.
He just und if he was done. He was so nervous.
He's so nervous about North. I kid you not. We're
doing the show on Sunday morning, and generally we know
about the time Steve Hartman is gonna come bursting in
at the door hadn't even opened. It's like, so Buck,
(41:29):
you're going down, you know in Hartman voice, He's like, yeah,
big bad U c l A waiting for us, because
really we had to clown I mean U n C
with that huge win, but the oddest almost come back
ever by your Baylor bears uh and then well finish
the job. But that was our running joke and and
(41:50):
obviously chuckling about it. But if you listen to some
of the national narrative about this game, Jason, he ain't
exactly lying the way it's been being sold. The man
I'll tell you, I'm just picturing now. Bucky's saying. It's
like him in one of those rooms where he's got
the bed that's the the the basketball uh backboard, you know,
above it, and he's and he's in his North Carolina
(42:12):
pajamas and he's pulling up his North Carolina blanket and
his room is all in baby blue Carolina. He's like,
oh my god, I'm sweating. Mc cronin was yelling at me, Oh,
I don't know what to do. And he puts on
his his North Carolina slippers and he goes to the
bathroom but just just that's all opinia just going through
my head that way. Oh, it's just funny, right, And
it's just like, oh, North Carolina wasn't supposed to be
(42:34):
in the tournament, and I man, I guess you could
argue they shouldn't have been, but I mean, look, we
got North Carolina and Michigan, two teams shouldn't have been
in the tournament. Here they are still going
