(00:22):
Smith Show with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio. Good
greetings and happy opening day The Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon Hobo where clearly we're gonna
get some kind of season. The first run of the
(00:43):
year's crosses the plate for the Mets on a hit
by pitch with the bases loaded, buckle up, two is
underway everybody, followed by a fielder's choice ground out to nothing. Mets. Yeah,
pretty crazy day. I mean, obviously Tiger Woods will be
talking about him a lot Major League Baseball. The fact
that get in at Wrigley Field because it was so
(01:05):
cold and miserable and it was was six dollars. Well,
look that I was talking to my friend about the
weather back here, and I did a spot in Baltimore.
They were at the same thing. We got sleet, like
it's ninety degrees by the beach. Yeah, today it was hot.
Today's one of those days where when someone calls and says, oh, man,
it's so colder. I always say the same thing. Oh,
(01:26):
I know exactly what you mean. Like today I wore
like a long sleeved t shirt out because it was
a little chili and it was perfect. Actually, But yeah,
I worry about stuff like that. No, No, I mean,
look the the video of the camera that was so blurry.
The cameraman wipes it off like in between pitches. Oh
now I could see. Uh yeah, that's how cold it
wasn't Wrigley today. Uh, but that's opening day right open
(01:47):
It like hopening. They always I always feel like it's
way too early because you see the quality of baseball
and it's not quite baseball. But then I go, I
can't wait another month. I can't wait till May for baseball.
Come on, man, you I'm kind of it's it's a
yin and yang. I'm like, I'm I'm I'm torn in myself.
I go, you know, baseball be great if it's started
in May. But I'm like, I can't go all April
(02:07):
with no baseball. I gotta have baseball. Baseball is back.
If the Mets were losing, I would say forget it.
Baseball has done no opening Day, We're finished. I hate baseball,
blah blah blah. Exactly, yes, yes, yes, Instead I'm watching
the the Reds. They had they interviewed Joey Votto while
he was on the field, which was kind of odd.
Did they interview Ronal Lacuna and he said how much
(02:28):
he hates hates hates Freddie Freeman. You know what, he
hasn't had much to say because, hey, he's not playing
and b Max Free there's deep but it's not playable jury.
But the three run bomb in the sixth off of
So happy opening day for Major League Baseball. It is
just that kind of celebratory day when look, everybody's excited,
(02:52):
we are, you know, it's it's the beginning of a
new season. Everybody's got hope, even if he's are in
mid season form. Sure, sure, Looks are already losing and
disappointing and they're upset. Yeah, I mean they won. And
then you have the uh, the Cardinals and seventy three
year old Adam Wayne Right goes out, gives him six
(03:12):
shutout in a six strikeout. It's one pitch is nice
and the economical Yeah, and you had you had Bobby
Witt Jr. Is in his debut and one of the
top prospects in all of Baseball's all feel a little
bit old man idea, I know, But well, listen, when
Bobby Witt Junior has a kid, that's what I'm gonna
be worried. That's what I'm okay, now, I got time
(03:33):
for that. When he has a kid coming in, that's
gonna be okay. Let's see because he was born June
fourteenth of two thousand, Okay, all right, And if you
look at the profile that he has across all the
Major League Baseball stat sites, he kind of looks like
a young Errol Flynn. Wow, Now that's that. That's not
that's not an that's not a comparison. I thought i'd
(03:54):
get a little whispy young any any addition of the
Three Musketeers or swash buckling pirate. Hell, he looks like
Bucko Bruce just put a little dagger between his teeth.
So tonight we have our big World Series predictions. We
got surprise playoff teams. We got best value bets for
(04:17):
the World Series. We got Lebron James not playing. We
got trade talk with the Lakers and Anthony Davis. Oh,
we got fun stuff. But of course today we had
Day one of the Masters, a tradition unlike any other.
And Day one we saw Tiger Woods play and he
shot seventy one, a one under par on his first day.
(04:40):
A kind of an up and down day, you know,
watching him play today, a little bit, he didn't quite
have the length off the tea he normally has. You know,
he was one of those a little typical Tiger Woods
days where he felt like, you know, he's fighting himself
a little bit. Some parts of his game look good,
some parts of his game doesn't. But the fact he's
out there, he played the entire round, he stayed in content,
and you know he's only three shots off the lead.
(05:02):
You know this what or four shots off the lead.
He's he's okay. I mean for what today could have been,
it could have been Tiger wasn't ready and and maybe
he stops playing after the twelfth hole and he can't walk,
or he's five overpart and you know he's going home.
After tomorrow. Uh, this was a big victorious day for
Tiger Woods. It was a big day for golf and
it was great, you know seeing him play the Masters
(05:23):
that it feels like, oh, golf is back to normal now,
you know, seeing Tiger Woods play. You know, maybe we
just needed him to be away for a while to
get more appreciation of Oh yeah, Tiger Woods is still
the p G A tour. You know, as old as
he is getting into his late forties, you know, he's
still the p G A tour And just seeing him
play it was like a breath of fresh air and
it was a great day for him. And you know
(05:45):
he made that big long birdie putt, the big fist
pump as well, you know, you know, taking you back
and getting all the fields on it. Um. So it
was a really good day. Now, when it comes to
the fact, can Tiger Woods win, I don't know that
we need to look at it that. Hey, Tiger Woods
winning would be no, Yes, it would be an incredible story.
But you gotta be dynamic at Augusta, right, you know,
(06:06):
the scores go very very low, and you know you
see guys that are shooting five under, four under, five
under every day and for Tiger to be four shots
off after day one. Okay, expect him to have a
pretty decent day today. But now, what's it gonna be
like the rest of the weekend when he gets in
and plays golf for the first time for four days,
Like he hasn't played in seventeen months. So I'm hoping
(06:27):
he stays around for the weekend. But winning, I think
we should just celebrate the fact that Tiger Woods is
here and he's playing, and he looks good, and it
looks like we're gonna see him on the course for
a while. Because I think winning, I think people got
carried away a little bit. I don't know that he's
quite dynamic enough to go four or five under every
other every day the rest of the way to try
to get there. Yeah, I think there there was just
(06:47):
a lot of wins to it, right for for all
of us sitting back and watching. You know, we we
always talk and it's that, uh, the devil in the
details of coming back from injuries. Right in Major League
Bay Small there's always the well, I took this to
try to get back on the mound or whatever. It's like,
Okay wants to who get back and perform, so he
(07:08):
enhanced his workouts for Tiger Woods. You know things that
have kind of dogged and whispered. But you know a
guy that was broken right a turn that I make
once a week taking my daughter to a soccer practice,
and that I've watched people nearly roll their cars in
the middle of the broad daylight. Uh. You know, it's
(07:28):
just that harrowing reminder of you know, a game of
inches literally like his uh shot on six where he
almost hit the hole in one and the I almost
I saw the twitter whale start to swim around. I
think he was make a full appearance there until it
felt just short, but like even absolutely, But you know
(07:50):
it's one of those you're you're inching towards the edge
of your seat with each shot you're watching, you know,
and we're all, you know, a junior lawyers and doctor
said everything orthoptis doing this job because you're watching, and
it's like, well, I think that you know this is
hurt whatever, And this was watching his gate between each
hole right as they is his walk. He he gave
(08:13):
you a good curse on a microphone, so that was
good uh at himself, of course, But it's just for
seven holes. No, but for eighteen, yeah, take it eight
you know the old one. Take it one day at
a time. So he has body feels he was said
he was sore, but nothing. He wasn't anticipating. Okay, that's
a positive. And as you said, it looks like, barring
(08:36):
a catastrophe tomorrow, we're gonna get him playing on the weekend.
And every golfer on the tour, every administrator, every sponsor,
every advertiser did a little dance at some point after
that opening t shot. Right, even though it went into
the trap, it was still Tiger's bad. But then he
(08:59):
goes what even at the front nine, and then you know,
one under for the back nine. You're like, hey, day one,
We'll take it. Are you kidding me? The attention, uh
levy towards this tournament, what would we be talking about
it really otherwise than acknowledging it and maybe a little
elongated version of an update with Steve no looking and
and and look and how different was it from any
(09:21):
other Tiger round except normally off the tea. It's just
longer when it goes out of bounds. You like, you
see he's able to win tournaments where what was his
greens and regulation. Yeah, but he's still shocked four under Yeah,
I mean like they sack you know, all the all
the big players. They sacrifice accuracy for distance off the tea.
But that's that's the big thing, is that you know
(09:42):
that that dynamic part of his game just isn't back
there yet. And you know, for a guy who always
made his bones of being able to hit it longer
than everybody for the now, you know, people are catching
up to him. But still he's on the back end
of his forties. Yeah, but look, I mean still, I
mean there there's certain courses that he's going to compete
well at the rest of his career, and the Master's
(10:03):
obviously is one of them. Like for the next five
or seven years, he will be a threat at the Mass. Now,
once you get into your mid fifties, and Lenn look,
Tiger is a guy that that has had a lot
of injury difficulties, it's gonna be more difficult to stay
in shape. So you know, the next few years for
Tiger clearly's his best chance to contend. Now are all
the different courses and you know for the Open Championship
(10:24):
or the or the p g A Championship, are they
gonna be up from the U S up. But no,
some of those courses are gonna see too daunting for
him because he doesn't quite have the the athletic game
that he had before. But certain courses, yeah, he's gonna love.
He's gonna always make sure to play Tory Pines when
a major is there. He's gonna play the Masters every
year because those are courses that he knows that he's
comfortable with, that he's playing extremely well on throughout his career.
(10:45):
So yeah, you're still gonna get great moments and and
great tournaments from Tiger Woods. Will it be enough to
win another major? Like I told you, I think the
one he won a couple of years ago might be
his last one. But he will still have the game
to play, and it's good that coming back here at
the Masters, you see that. Okay, once he doesn't have
the game for the Masters, That's what I'm gonna say. Okay,
this is it. Like if he if he starts coming
(11:06):
to Augusta and a couple of years go by and
it's man, he's not making the cut here, that's when
you know, Okay, Tiger Woods really can't compete anymore. There's
a difference between winning and competing, and now you're hoping
he can compete and potentially win. But that's the one
where if he doesn't do well at the Masters, that's you.
That's w you start to ring the bell and go, man,
this is it for Tiger Woods. Well, yeah, it's just
the is he playing meaningful golf on on a Sunday? Right?
(11:28):
Can we get to that and just take it, you know,
the the eighteen holes at a time, and hope he
walks off and wakes up feeling good and ready to
go again. I mean that it's like the rest of us,
you know, the old former colleague here at Fox Sports Radio,
Tom Looney. You know he's day to day, but aren't
(11:49):
we all And then the music would start playing. But
it's just that level, right, and and given the fact
that he is on the on the back side of
his forties, you know, it's the excitement to watch a
couple of those big hits. Whether you're a weekend duffer
or you haven't picked up a club in years, but
you just appreciate the physical and mental battles that are
(12:13):
going on for each hole, and how much of it
we hear all the time is you know, it's between
your ears, a lot of it and battling yourself. So
to see him on the course amongst all those young
guys is pretty damn cool as well as you know,
picking that fucious shirt man, because that right off the jump,
I declare victory right there. Yeah, he's he's not quite
(12:35):
ready for red, but okay, you know we'll get a
shade of red as we close in on Sunday a
little bit. Not when he was ready to go straight
to the club when he was done. Yeah, well, okay,
what's wrong with that? Did I sound like I was
casting his persions? I'm all honest, Why is it he
ready for round two? Well? He went out dancing. You
(12:56):
saw the shirt. It was magnetic, it was hit. Now.
I think with with that now he'd beat chair dancing
because you know he couldn't get out and dance, and
he come on, you have so much pressure. You can
put on that langue. There'll be chair dancing. But that
celebration on the first t that gallery that was standing there,
the smile on the the starter's face as he had
got to announce him going up to drive, like it
(13:20):
was it was just all that, you know, all the fields,
not to mention the veteran guys Jack uh and Watson
and and player going out and doing their thing. Although players,
you know, a guy courting some controversy based on his apparel,
but we'll leave that for another time. It's an extension
of the Phil Mickelson discussion that we had. Uh, so
you can find the podcast wherever you get your audio there.
(13:42):
But all of that just and again, I I came
to golf late. Was not something on the South side
of Chicago unless you were going to go hustle across
to the north side to Caddy. But you know, the
north side was seen as there was an evil barrier
between at least you know, in my air, it seemed
growing up to Northwestern barrier, was it an evil barrier?
(14:05):
Was kind of something like that. But yeah, so so
I came to it late, but certainly in this job
and with the friends that I made and throughout the years,
that that is their form of self frustration and relaxation,
that you know, paradox that exists with every hole in
every swing, I appreciate it on a whole other level.
(14:27):
And uh, it was just pretty damn fun viewing as
I awaited first pitch a Brewer's Cubs. Real credit card
questions require real people, someone who understands your issues works
to resolve them with you. That's why I Discover offers
helpful US based reps available two seven Discover exceptionally common sense. Well,
coming up, we got some of our big MLB season predictions.
(14:49):
Plus guess what there could be a big time wide
receiver who wants to get traded out of the NFL?
Does it? Elijah More And it's stop, don't don't put
that out there at the universe. He's on a rookie car.
He's just getting he's getting ahead of the game. Doesn't matter,
doesn't He said, look what I did with these Jets quarterbacks.
That's coming up next. Keeping right here, Jason and Mike,
(15:10):
This is Fox. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harman weekdays at ten
pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio app. We go to the hotline
right now, bring in with us Fox Sports Radio, MLB Network,
Baseball Insider extraordinaire. He's on Twitter at John Morrossy. It
(15:33):
is John Paul MOROSSI JP. What's happening man? How are you.
Happy Opening Day, my friends. The statue of Tylore McGill
he commissioned as we speak at City Field. Five scoreless innings,
six strikeouts, nary a base on balls issued by Tyler McGill. So,
(15:56):
with all due respect to Max Scherzer and Jacob Degron,
can we say, Jason Smith, the Mets have a new ace.
Uh yeah, but remember we are getting close to Edwin
Diaz time, so all this could be go out the
window in about twenty minutes. Okay, and and that is correct,
but but I will now my next follow up question
(16:17):
to you is have you taken measure of the success
of National's hitters tonight not named Juan Soto? Uh? Yeah,
I'm thinking we can win all our games against them.
I should have said that. Why did I say that?
Just stupid? It is? It is so interesting because I
was actually having a conversation. I feel like Jason, you
(16:39):
know how we're such good friends that I actually find
that I learned more about you and your own personality
and your own life experience, even from conversations with other people.
I was speaking with a Mets fan this week, and
and he and I basically one point in time, said,
can you explain this whole Mets thing to me, and
he basically explain the whole ethos of the Mets fan.
(17:03):
And afterward I thought to myself, I now know my
friend Jason even better by speaking with his new friend.
That that's that's how strong our bond is. My friend,
did he pull out a guitar and starts sinking. I
hurt myself today, Harry uplifting because as we speak now
(17:23):
the Mets undefeated. The Royals are also undefeated. How about
Bobby Witt Junior's debut eight thinning clutch double with that
breaking on the mount for Casey. So many great stories.
How about that pregame ceremony Albert pooh Holes, YadA your Molena,
Adam Wainwright, YadA your molena. Today his eight keen consecutive
(17:45):
start behind the plate as a major league catcher with
a single franchise. That is the longest such streak of
any catcher with one team in the game's history. This
is a day to celebrate all that is enduring, all
that is new, all that is promising. I am indeed
very romantic when it comes to Major League Baseball. Well,
(18:05):
you left out the biggest new rivalry that was born
today in baseball, Ronald Acuna and Freddie Freeman, I keep
the hate each other. Come on, so here's here's I
have some thoughts on this one, okay, and I'm glad
you asked. Okay, So I read read Ronald's comments. I
(18:26):
also noted what Freddie said today, and I also saw
what what Ronald tried to say today, the kind of
I think, lower the temperature a little bit the story here.
There are two thoughts on this number one. Some of
this illuminates the divide that has occurred in the game
between the veterans who believe that we should play the
(18:49):
game the old way, the traditional way, which there are
certainly some merits to it. The Braves won the World
three A championship last year, so it's really hard to
criticize the organizational philosophy too much. But I also think
what was happening and based in effectively a Kunya and
Freeman both at least indirectly said well, these are things
(19:11):
that happened back in So I'm not really so sure
that something happened four years ago about how much eye
black and Kunia was wearing is necessarily tabloid breaking stories,
but it does speak to what I believe is a
cultural change in baseball that has to happen where where
younger players need to have more of a voice. This
(19:33):
whole notion of earning your way to be able to
not have to carry the bubble dumb bag in the bullpen.
I mean, there's some aspects of the hierarchy that are
more benign than others. But my general statement on this
is a kunya, especially for as electrifying of a player
as he is, should be allowed to be himself the
person out of that he brings. You're not going to
be able to flourish in this game with how hard
(19:55):
it is done you mentally if you're trying to constantly
check and change your own identity. That's my first part.
The second part is none of this would have been
an issue Freddie Freeman had stayed with the Braves, and
we can talk about what what issues existed there um
So that the whole point, the premise of the question
(20:17):
was how much are you gonna miss Freddie Freeman. Well,
if Freeman stayed with the Braves, like he probably should
have done, and maybe there could have been a different
approach taken with respect to the negotiation, the question would
not have been asked, and this would not be an
issue right now now that the Dodgers paid Freeman more
objectively than what the Braves were prepared to do. And
(20:38):
I'm never going to criticize anybody for for getting paid
what their value is in the open market. But it
just seems to me that there was probably a compromise
point to be reached where if you if you balanced
out the income taxes in California to what it is
in Georgia, it would have been close us enough probably
(21:01):
that it would have been worth a while to stay.
And I just think that for whatever reason, wherever, wherever,
the blame falls, but that's not what happened. So Freeman
should have stayed a brave and that's the whole reason
why this is the game of the the story. In the
last couple days, so it gave us, you know, at
least our first fireworks of the season. Smith obviously giddy
about the the Mets. I watched the Cubs and the
(21:23):
Brewers to start things off. JP get in with six
bucks today and they had a competition where they had
fans take BP for tickets to Opening Day. I felt
a little sad about it, but being a Southsider that
that didn't last very long, but they get that opening victory,
and you talked about wits Zuki. We got a bunch
of young talent along with the twenty three year old
(21:44):
akun You we're ready to go. We we are, We've
got There is so much young talent in the game,
and that's why I'm so glad that we finally got
through the labor issues of the last few months. Because
for all the struggle the baseball has from a marketing perspective,
and as you mentioned, the crowd being smaller than expected
(22:06):
at Wrigley is one of them. There there is so
much young talent in the game right now that we
just had to get things back on the field for
a market like Kansas City to fall in love with
Bobby Wood Jr. The Tigers and their fans. They've got
Spencer Torkelson, C. J. Abrams steps into the voids. It's
left by Fernando Tatis Jr. Guys, there is so much
(22:28):
young talent in the game right now that we are
I think going to be incredibly lucky to watch the
season play out with all the new stars and then
also some of the older ones. As that referenced the
Trio in St. Louis, potential Hall of famers, all three
of them. In my opinion, there's there's a lot of
really compelling stories in the game right now that I'm
thrilled about and scrape lad baseball back and and pretty
(22:50):
soon it's we'll be talking about the stories that we
love talking about in the next up of weeks. Who's
off to a fast start? Should we be concerned about
some team at three and nine? And it's just it's
great baseball talk. This is why we love the game
so much, why we love it every single day, and
why I'm so grateful that we are back and that
(23:11):
we had opening day of scheduled today, even though here
in New York we had to wait until tomorrow because
of mother nature. And that's okay. Garrett Cole, Nate eve Aldi,
Aaron Judge, Is he going to sign? Is he not
going to sign? All shall be revealed in the next
twenty four hours. Listen, listen. The Varsity plays tonight. That's
the Mets. The JV game is tomorrow, it's the Yankees.
(23:31):
It's okay. You just predicted them to go to the
World Series and now you're calling on them to JV team.
You they were my world Series, Well, I will, well,
they're my surprise World Series. They're my surprise World series team. Yes,
it sounds very good. Why I am lucky that tomorrow
I'm on the call for M Wilby Network with Bob Cases,
Tom Verducci in the booth and I am and I'll
(23:53):
be on the field, Like I cannot believe that I
pulled that assignment, but I did. I'm here. I'm I'm
sort of pinching myself that I gets. You have to
work with both of them at a Yankees Red Sox
game open day Yankee Stadium. I'm pretty blessed to be
doing that. But I will let the Yankees know when
I see Aaron Boone tomorrow that Jason Smith says you're
gonna win the World Series. And at that point in time,
(24:13):
I think he's gonna say, wait a minute, hey, guys, parade,
we're gonna win the World Series. Jason Smith has us
winning at all. I also had Aaron Judge. I have
Aaron Judge winning the m v P, so I might
want to sign him before he went to the m
v P and costs even more money. Oh that's a
really unique you know I'm just kind of getting used
to understanding, uh, you know, projections and some of the
(24:34):
futures markets. I'm not very fluent in these universes now
because baseball is getting more familiar with it. But I
I from from what I understand, you know, if if
he puts up good numbers, that is going to manifestly
increase his cottract value. That's like, I don't know much
about all this stuff in terms of, you know, wagering
(24:56):
on things. All I do know that if he had
fifty five bomb, he's gonna make a lot of money,
you know, how to make friends. Tomorrow asked Bob costs
us a lot about gambling. I'm just kidding. One of
the best reads last year was for a gambling That's like,
(25:16):
I still I'm not totally sure about like what I
can do during a broadcast. I'm just gonna stick to
talking about the players stories and their backstories and who
taught them how to play, why they love the game
so much. That's that is my purview. The gambling stuff,
I kind of just say, I'm not just not so
(25:38):
sure about this. If you if you ask me for
the World Baseball Classic, I can translate interview for you
from the Spanish English, that much I can do. I
could do Italian English if you want to do. I
could probably do Italian the Spanish. But the gambling stuff
you think for me. So I'm just gonna stay with
what I know. No, that's a lot of talents. So
since Jason gave off part of his picks, you know,
as you're doing the prognostication as a baseball analysts, folks
(26:00):
can do with it what they will. In the gambling market,
what are you looking at? What? What what teams standing
out beyond maybe beyond the obvious uh that people are
already all over the place. So I'm on record as
picking Toronto over Milwaukee in the World Series, although after
watching Milwaukee play today, I'm I'm already a little bit panicked. Um,
I've got the Mariners winning the al a L West. Okay, okay,
(26:23):
stop stop stop now, stop this is I mean, I've
known you for almost ten years now. Every year you
come on and the first thing you say is the Mariners.
What's the Mariners this year? The men, the men of
the sea. The men of the sea shall steer in
the ship into October. Beautiful gales will be blowing there
(26:46):
in the future down and we're gonna have a playoff ball.
It'll distract people from the Seahawks. This is how I
know we're like we're not even friends. Were family, okay,
because you know it's like, dude, JP, I've been listening
to you saying this about the marriage every year for
a decade the radio, and then like if we're so
(27:08):
close that you guys are like, dude, j B, No,
Mariners shut it down. No, no, no, I've heard this before.
But but here's the thing. I can't. And there was
actually one year where I try to be like the
reverse psychology, was like, you know what, I feel so
badly for them that I like put this hex on
them that I decided, like, good news, Mariners, I'm not
gonna pick you this year. And they still didn't make it.
But now I have to pick them again because I
(27:31):
can't because, let's be honest, they've got a good team.
Julio Rodriguez, Jared Kelly, Jesse Winker, a Ohanio Suadez. They
called it. Matt Brash will be the fifth starter and
by the way, the first Major League ever born in
the great city of Kingston, Ontario. See, that's that's what
I had to the broadcast. But but the that that
that I can do. But but on the Mariners front,
(27:52):
they're good enough that I cannot abandon them now. And
if I did, what a fraud I would be. They
they were two they were to two games out of
the playoff spot last year. I can't abandon the Mariners now.
Don't you know Listen, I remember the first time you
did this when you say, listen this team. Alvin Davis
at first base, Jim Press, listen. They're gonna get a
(28:13):
big year out of Mark Langston and Scott Bankhead. This
is the year for the marriage, if I mean not
going all the way back JP, the starter who was well,
they had Bill Gullocks and years there more in the rotation.
Here's that before or after the trade of Ken Fels,
the kid from Montreal. They got the kid the trade
of Montreal. Randy Johnson, Montreal. He's tall, he throws hard.
(28:37):
You know, maybe he's gonna be the big kid from Montreal. Left.
He's on he's on Twitter at John MORROSSI again year
had picking the Mariners to win the a L. That's
gonna be your Twitter profile. Nine years of counting picking.
But it's going to happen end. Hey j P. I'm
(29:01):
glad we're on the same page because I was talking
them up as well. So let's thanks a bunch, j Pop.

(29:46):
you get your podcast, Fox Sports Radio. That Jason Smith
Show with my bass friend Mike Harmon. Happy Opening Day,
Opening night in Major League Baseball. As the game of
the night has just come to a close. The New
York Mets on top of the baseball world with a
(30:07):
five one win over the Nationals. And let me tell
you know, who's the happiest person in the world is
Apple TV. Because tomorrow night Max Scherzer's first game as
a Medicas his old team, the Nationals. Uh, the game's
gonna be a little bit more interesting than even anticipated
because yes, you have the Mets, the Nationals. Sres first start.
(30:30):
Nationals pictures hit three Mets batters tonight, including Pete Alonso
in the shoulder slash face guard in the top of
the ninth inning. Mets didn't really seem to care for it. Uh,
Tomorrow night, I think is gonna be pretty interesting by Carmen,
you know, Max Scherzer, his new team. I gotta make
sure they know what side of the fence I'm on
(30:51):
here on this Tomorrow night is gonna be Oh, I
think it's gonna be something. Tomorrow night getting a little
bit spicy right off the jump. You gotta love job. No,
I like that, right, Let's get those early storylines other
than attendance and cold and everybody complaining about TV. And
(31:12):
you know, we talked about it in the last couple
of days, and and yes, I did put my resume
up on Twitter earlier at swollen home. Since the number
of people that get to broadcast and be part of
baseball games, I'm like, what the hell we should be
doing it too. We've got a long standing and very
good track record of being able to blow viate on
(31:34):
all things sports and entertainment for four hours a night.
We could certainly do that for your average Major League
baseball game. Yeah, are they gonna have crews at all
these games? Are they doing it from like as the
studio at their home? Like I could do that. It's
okay that I'd love to do, but for one year
to do the travel thing. I do it for a year.
But I think some of these games as people are
(31:54):
doing them from the think, so, yeah, let's beam you
in from wherever you are. I'm telling you man that,
I mean, that's the that's the job. That's the job
that If it wasn't for the travel, Oh man, I'd
have been doing that since I was a kid. I've
been doing I'd come right out of high school. I'd
be like, boy, this guy can't miss man, Well he's coming.
He's coming right out and not even need to go
to college. He can go do games right now. He
can he can warm up with some single A games. Uh,
(32:17):
you know, like you can do the Savannah sand Nats
games and he can get up to double A and
Binghamton and oh yeah, then i'd be played by play
guy man. But I don't want to travel. I've told you.
The travel is just it's not for me. But if
we're an age now we can call baseball games from
from a studio. Doesn't have to be in your house,
but call from a studio. That's it. And I can
drive there and and do the game and drive home
at the end of the day. Oh, sign me up, man,
sign me up. Already seems like we should be able
(32:39):
to do that as an alternate Fox broadcast. We might
just have to do that on Zoom just for the
hell of it. Yeah, maybe put together like some backdrop
and and then we mock it like into one of
those extra screen Diana Tassi uh kind of deals, or
you know, the Mega cast for insert sporting event here.
I just saw more people announcing that they were doing
(33:00):
baseball games today. I was like, what the hell, how
far are we on the depth chart that we're not
getting a call here? I mean, I know, I'm old, well,
you gotta absolutely want to do it, and I mean no,
but you can't just now, I declare, you gotta actually
say it. You can't just say no, one's come knocking
on my door and no. I put it, well, I've
been saying it for nine years. You're like four hours
a night. You remember, you remember Robin Harris, uh passed
(33:23):
away comedian, He did this, he did this, uh this
act and his stand up in the mid nineties that
I still left at today when he goes. You know,
people want a job, they all send me the same thing.
They'll say, what do you do today for a job? Oh? Nothing,
I got nothing. You gotta get out there, you know,
like my friends all think the job're gonna come knocking
up on the door. Hey, who's there? Job? Oh, come
on in, that's not gonna happen. You gotta actually get
(33:45):
out there and show you what the job. Hey. I've
been doing that damn night with brilliant analysis, pithy comments,
stripping sarcasm. The only thing I don't do is yell enough.
So I guess we have to start the official count
by by Frostberg or Bow or whoever's with us on.
I mean maybe tie shirt could keep score as well.
(34:05):
How often I hit off the register because right now
I'm on the edge of green to red on my
Comrax unit. But I think it really doesn't count unless
I'm fully in the red screaming like an idiot. So
we have to count the number of seconds. And then
as I build up my stamina to really scream about things,
I don't believe that. Maybe that betters my chances for
(34:27):
a big job, right, well, good, I hope so, I
hope it does. But now that you've put it out there,
that's better than just Hey, how come no one's just
calling me on the phone saying, hey, we gotta get
you a job. I know you hear about that in
Hollywood going I was just sitting at home and I
got a phone call out of the blue. Mean, while
the real story is my agent has been calling this
person for like every day for a year. Oh and
I got a phone call out of it. Yeah, it
doesn't happen that way. I've been outside this guy's house
(34:49):
in the prayer of pose for four weeks. I've got blisters,
uh and and scrapes all over my knees, just going
please come on, I'll work for scale. Let me in,
just buy me a sandwich. I'll do whatever you need.
I'm a sandwich guy. If you're a valued customer, you
deserve a simple gesture of appreciation from your credit card company.
(35:11):
And that's why I discovered matches. All the cash back
you've ere in the end of your first year discover
exceptionally common sense. Learn more at discovered dot com. Slash
match limitations they do apply. Now, speaking of opening night
Major League Baseball, Yes, I'm gonna say it. You're gonna
go wow? Really already? Yes? Uh? No hit or alert
right now, as the Diamondbacks are being no hit in
(35:32):
the bottom of the seventh fitting against the Padres You
Darvish went six innings, he threw pitches. He is out
of the game right now, so if it does finish,
it would be a shared no hitter. Tim Hill is
in the game now for the Padres As again we
could We are nine ounce away from what could be
an opening night no hitter in Major League base three innings.
(35:56):
Pitch Wait, wait, wait, it's now over. Oh you suck?
I chixed that. Yeah, but did you really want to
know hitter opening opening night? I don't know. It's the
only thing that could take away from Tiger by the way,
that that one he ont to flip up the double
(36:16):
bird right now because they did the shift on him
and he hit it where the third basement or whatever
we read routine out, So suck it right there. Uh yeah,
learn how to hit there it is, there's data point
number one for the season. Suck it, professional hitter right there. Yeah,
(36:38):
I got into the rench. So that's like eight seconds.
Let's go. Yes, now over Paven Smith with the first
hit of the night for the Diamondbacks. We will now
not have a no hitter. And honestly, you know what,
I'm okay with that because I think fans as much
as we're looking forward to opening day is how exciting
it is, and look the Mets one, how exciting is
I think fatigue would send in right away if we
(36:59):
had a no hit or opening night here we're back
to the three outcome world. You know, they only have
three strikeouts at this point, but it's a three outcome world.
That would be the lazy narrative that they wouldn't even
be doing box score reading tomorrow to find out whether
that was true. I really do I think it. Fatigue
would set an opening day oh no, hit, I'm done.
(37:22):
I'm tuning out. I can't do this. I really can't.
I can't do this. I gotta I gotta turn away.
I gotta turn away. Oh I'm so excited Baseball's back day.
Baseball returned. It was so good to have the split
screen experience. There's some Tiger and then while I was
waiting on, you know, the Cubs and the Brewers a
little pre game, but also Law and Order. There was
(37:43):
an episode where they Gotta played Krueger on Seinfeld was
playing a lawyer. So when you combine those universes, it
was really an interesting experience. Uh. And then you got
to the opening day pageantry and Andre Dawson is out
there and Fergie Jenkins, all the veteran Cubs here was
all bundled up because it was freezing. It's cold. Like
(38:04):
my brother texting me because you know, I debated since
I'm working from home today going over the game, It's like,
I gets the Cubs. I can't even be motivated when
tickets are six bucks get in an hour before the
game was six dollars. Yeah, when when it's more money
to get a supersize big macmeal at McDonald's and you think, Okay,
I think, can I really get excited about that's tickets
(38:26):
for two in calicants? Right? Because that that big macmeals
about twelve bucks? Now, okay, okay, okay, let me just
say something really quick, okay speaking to McDonald's right opening, Okay,
just really quick, deep breath. You got more excited about
that than you did the Mets for crying out. One thing,
because I actually went to McDonald's today, right for for
for lunch. And one thing I've noticed the last few
(38:48):
months with McDonald's is and it's not like I go
all the time. I don't go nearly as my but hey,
it's not like I go all the time. No, no, no,
it's not go all the time. I go a lot
less than I used to. And you know McDonald does not,
but you still we go to McDonald's. You know, I
don't know, once a month, twice a month, whatever it is.
But you know, I know that prices have gone up
(39:08):
when you go out to eat it restaurants. Now you've
seen it through the pandemic, and you think prices are
gonna come down, Yeah they're not. You go to McDonald's,
you get fast food now, like lunch for Pam and
I and Zoe and it was like I got a
meal and Pam got a meal and Zoe got a meal, right,
and yeah, it's like thirty dollars. I'm like, how the
hell is this thirty dollars? Are you kidding me? I
(39:29):
mean it's it's now fast food is like, well when
did it? And that's that's in elastic demand R. That's
like people went locally that complain about Disneyland, that go
to want to go every other day. It's like, it's
not the park down the street, you know, if you're
if you're just going on a win by that big
season pass and then you can save. But the the
(39:50):
idea that uh yeah, it's it's in elastics. They can
keep raising prices. They're still gonna pack them in yeah,
And I can't get over it. I'm like, it's just so,
I mean, you can order it now. It's like, well
I kind of feel like you have to order off
the value menu now because you order a meals. Well, really,
I'm spending thirty dollars for three people in McDonald's. It
should be like fifteen bucks. No, no, no, now it's thirty.
(40:12):
It's like prices have doubled at McDonald's. Well, I mean
the cost of labor has gone up about double here
in California. To try to convince, I mean, there's a
for a hiring sign in every window of every restaurant
and and grocery store. I mean, just go on down
the line, look at look around your neighborhood, man, and
(40:33):
I'm sure wherever you are listening and we appreciate you
being part of the extended family, you can speak to
it as well. All Right, minium minimum waged for for
all of those experiences gone up, and well they're not
going to absorb the costs and hit into their profits.
So who's paying more? You want? You want the classic
meals at insert than you x? Yeah? Cost is rising.
(40:58):
Twitter at out about a Fresco. Mike gets swollen done
the Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. Alright,
so we don't do this that often, but because it's
fun and it's something that could have played out today.
We didn't get the no hitter, uh from the Padres
against the Diamondbacks. It's at least one hit for the
diamond Backs. Uh, the only opening day no hit or
Mike Harmon, do you know who it was the only
(41:20):
opening day no hitter in baseball history. So Johnny Vandermere. Oh,
that's a good guess because he because the back to
back no hitters season. Yeah. No, No, he had doubles,
but they were not his first and second. That's a record,
by the way, they will never be broken. Was it
Andy Hawkins? No, that was in August and he lost
that game for nothing. Certainly with Hawkins, stranger things have happened.
(41:44):
T J. Boom No, the only opening day no hitter
in Major League baseball. Here's think about this. It wasn't
Dwight Good opening Day three times. It's not Dwite Good.
Bob Feller about that? Think day no hitter in baseball history.
In nineteen forty, he was twenty one years old when
(42:05):
he threw a no hitter against you too, should stopped.
It's American like, that's kind of stop he did against
your sorry ass White Sox. And and you know what
it looks might never have been an athlete that and
former athlete that have encountered where the experience was so
(42:26):
vastly different met him one time, Gregarious Tall and stories
signing a couple of baseballs and chilling and in Cooperstown.
The next time, he looked at you, like, why why
are you bothering me? Like, because you're selling autographs that
I needed. I'm not coming here to bother you harass you.
(42:47):
Come on, man, what you want for me? It was
a blustery forty degree day in Chemistry Park on April
sixty when Bob Feller through a one nothing no hitter
against the White Sox. His parents, family were all in
attendance for the game. I love all these big baseball
I didn't know. I'm sorry. I just do this all
the top of my head. I just knew all this
on you. I mean a savant when it comes to
(43:09):
Bob Feller trivia. Yeah, yeah, sure, you know me. Bob Feller,
he does everything. Let's talk about his military history and
stuff while we're at it too, and the rappid Robert
Sure sure, Twitter, and how about a fresca Mike gets
swollen down the Jason Smith Show with Mike Harment. So
there you go. I saved you from no hit or
fatigue on opening day by jinxing the no hitter. Because
(43:30):
as soon as I said it, Paven Smith breaks it up.
You're welcome. You are all welcome for everything you're we'll
still saying congratulations to him on being a professional hitter,
not complaining about the shift, and going up there and
doing something about it. Good on you.
