(00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Hello and welcome inside
the Jason Smith Show with my base friend Mike Harmon.
Happy Tuesday, and if yesterday was middle Finger Monday, well
today is Jimmy Buckets Tuesday, Jimmy Butler. Right now for
(00:48):
the heat, we dive right into the NBA Playoffs, the
big game going on right now. Allegedly there's another game,
but it's on NBA TV. We're trying to confirm it's
actually real. Well, the highlight of that one, though, Jason
is the dad's fighting. But we'll talk about that. Yeah,
but I don't know if that's real though, because it's
on NBA TV. We watched it, I mean, because there
was more about the sideline reporting in Karl Anthony. You
(01:12):
had someone representing Karl Anthony towns and you had um
John Morant's dad, who everybody just kept typing in is
that you're sure that's not usher? Uh? And they were
joined and then they ended up hugging it out before
it was all over. So it's cool. What have I
told you from the beginning? You want the next great
reality show? Basketball Dad's is the next great You force
(01:35):
him to watch that exist yet you forced them to
watch games together? Right here? This is the This is
the idea, okay, I mean, because look we're full of
great ideas. I mean, look, Basketball Wives is great. Bad
Basketball Dads, And what you do is you force dads
of star players to watch games their sons are playing
against each other. You force them to watch the games
together in uh, in a in a in an intimate
(01:55):
setting like a living room or somewhere. Everything is available.
You get food, alcohol, whatever you need, whatever you need
for this show. And and that's and that's the show
Basketball Dads. It works. I just want to make sure
I got the names right. It's Team Rant and Karl
Anthony town Senior. And they were going back and as
buckets are getting scored, they're mocking each other. And it
(02:15):
was fun because they didn't want to send it back
to the sideline for any play by play because these
guys were entertaining his hell, so it was off to
the to the sidelines and just staying while. There were
about seven possessions. So that is real. I can tell
you that even if you don't have NBA TV, I
can confirm that that one's existence. But that's not that's
(02:36):
not the story of the night thus far. No, no, no,
it's my guy. It's selling coffee and wrecking dreams. Yes
it is. Well, have more on basketball. Wait, patent pending,
patent pending on basketball. Dats can't steal at basketball, dads,
But right now a game that's just going final. Miami
takes a two games to none lead over the Atlanta Hawks. Look,
(02:59):
the Hawks had a big night from Trey Young, he
had five, but Danovitch comes twenty seven off the bench.
Doesn't matter because the Heat get forty five out of
Jimmy buckets. He goes fifteen out of twenty five from
the floor. Uh, he has a huge night. The Heat
win to take this two games to non lead. And
it even though he's not wearing a Chicago Bulls jersey,
(03:21):
Mike Harmon, he is still whatever jersey he wears. Jimmy
Buckets is still your guy. Now there are guys that
that you just love the way they play the game
and and yes they can get under your skin. Uh
And and maybe maybe I identify with with some of
that in terms of my personal and professional life. Uh.
And Jimmy Butler is certainly that guy that can drive
(03:43):
drive folks pretty pretty hard to where um there are
cracks there. Uh in this case comes up with another
huge effort tonight or eleven of twelve from the filling.
And and here's a couple of stats for you, right
we we pointed out yesterday the fact that you'll never
see another game and where a team only commits three turnovers,
remember that Dallas only had three turnovers in their win.
(04:06):
UM in tonight's game, the Heat uh forced nineteen turnovers,
had fourteen of their all. But they forced nineteen turnovers
and they made eleven more free throws than the Hawks shot.
Final score one. So look and Jimmy Buckets getting it
done it and you know you're you're getting good balance
(04:27):
from the other players. Don't mean you didn't get decent contributions.
Hawks had four players and double figure as you mentioned
by Danovich and Young combined for fifty four. But you know,
all in you're looking at advantage, you know, Miami across
the board and all the other stats, including contributions of
their own off the bench. Jimmy buckets, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy
(04:55):
seven from three fifteen of twenty five on the night.
Not often you see a twenty five shot night for
Jimmy Butler. You know, I'm just happy that we're playing
the Jimmy stuff for Jimmy and not another Jimmy Garoppolo story.
Not enough. Oh no, it's let's stop. We're playing it
for We're playing it for Jimmy, playing it for Jimmy Butler.
Jimmy played good. Jimmy played good tonight. Jimmy, he was good.
(05:16):
You were playing it for Jimmy Butler. Right, I'm done
playing it for Jimmy Garoppolo. Well, I mean, we'll do
Garoppolo next week when we're doing draft talk. I'm so
done with probably next Wednesday. I'm so done with Jimmy
Garoppolo stories because really, unless we have any other news,
right for Garoppolo and Baker, we're kind of on a
moratorium for both of them, right, I'm so done with
both of these guys. I'm so done with hearing news
(05:36):
about Baker Mayfield not coming to offseason activities. Jimmy Garoppolo
they may not be able to trade him. I'm done
with these guys. I'm done with Baker, and they both
might not end up even starting this year. And yet today, Oh,
what's gonna happen? Baker Mayfield stays away, Deshaun Watson shows up.
I'm done. I'm done. Baker is gonna go someplace and
(05:57):
be a backup. He's not even gonna start. Garoppolo is
not gonna be healthy until August. And maybe he gets traded,
and maybe he doesn't. He's gonna back up wherever he goes.
So yeah, I'm sorry. I'm done. The the the proportion
with which we talk about Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo
compared to what they do on the field is so
wildly disproportionate. It's like having Tim Tebow conversations. Hey yeah,
(06:19):
Tebow comes come. Oh my goodness, come on, all the
Tebow conversations the past decade. The guy that hasn't even
played professional sports, alright, the guy barely played in the
in the minor leagues of Baseball at oh Tebow Tebow Tebow,
then the amount of time spent talking about him versus
the amount of actual sports that he's done that we
care about. I really that that every every Baker Mayfield
(06:40):
and Jimmy Garoppolo conversation, it's it's a Tebow conversation. We're
talking about these guys that guys aren't gonna even start. Really,
we're gonna talk about these guys again again. There's that
much of a market for Jimmy and Baker and Baker
red look, and I get Baker is polarizing, and I
understand it. Maybe it just to me feeling a little
weird today. You know about it, but you're you're you're
getting a little offen. Just I feel like I'm done.
(07:01):
I'm done with Baker and Jimmy and Baker, and Jimmy
and Jimmy and Baker. I'm done. I'm done with people
named Jimmy Baker. I'm done with people named Baker. James,
I'm done. I'm done with David Baker, Finch, I'm done
with anybody. I'm done with all that. I'm done with
Frank home Run Baker. I'm done with Dusty Baker. I'm done.
I'm done. I'm done. So let's see. Uh, you're also
talking about the televangelist Jim Baker. Uh, I'm done with
(07:23):
Jim Baker. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done
with I'm done with Bakeer McBride. I'm done. I'm done.
Now now you're reaching. Now, now you're going back and
trashing an American legends with with Garoppolo, eager really say,
all right, dude, won games, they were viable deep into playoffs, etcetera, etcetera. Okay,
and then it's just the do you believe in Trey
(07:45):
Lance and in the forty niners being an organization that
you have some level of confidence that they know what
they're doing. That, yes, it maintains a level of discourse.
Not to mention that folks just hate on Jimmy Garoppolo
because he's a powerful and tractive man. We just have
to stipulate to that. With Baker Mayfield, he had the
opportunity to sit down, right, he was hurting and he
(08:08):
was not good. You and I for weeks last season,
right during the one campaign just kept saying why why
would you not put case Keenuan in? It's like because
Baker doesn't want to come out, and as the former
number one pick and a guy that led him to
the playoffs, he's getting the option. And what what happened? Well,
he was terrible and then you had no teammates back
(08:30):
him up. Right, It's like Bocala and nobody went to
his birthday party Draft Day. If you haven't watched it,
you got a week because the reference is Baker Mayfield.
Then you know, felt like he got screwed by Everybody's like, no,
you played, and what happens you? You don't get a pass.
If you play, you get hurt and your sidelined. Okay,
(08:51):
we made question health and viability and and availability and
and do all of those cliches right, your best availability,
our best at by is your availability and all that.
That's fine, But if you play in your terrible you
decided to get out there and playing now, it says
nothing of Stefanski not having the guts to say this
is terrible and we're sinking fast and we still have
(09:13):
an opportunity to play. Why because the Ravens have nobody
that's actually able to play, and the Steelers can't get
a guy to throw the ball beyond six yards of
the line of scrimmage. But hey, they made their decisions
and they have to live with it too. Likewise, with Baker,
people love love to bash and tear, tear the guy
apart and mock him and put clips of his commercials together.
(09:36):
That now he's being locked out of the stadium. All
of those things. And their quarterbacks, which means they ruled
the day. Why because this quarterback class at least and
on the surface, and nobody thinks it's any good. Yeah,
but I got a story in a minute that's gonna
beat Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garopolo together. There's a million,
but there's a million stories to beat the exact you
(09:57):
perpetrate you, you helped fuel the Tim Tebow thinking he
didn't do that, he didn't save a guy's But that's
just it. I mean, there there's a whole lot of
mystery and and confusion reigns around that going. I don't know,
there's bigger things at play when Tebow enters the building,
and he's done a lot of great things. I mean too,
(10:18):
does so much in communities and and for for kids
uh developmental disabilities and and differently abled. I mean, the
the the guy does so much, but on the field, no,
it didn't work. If you're a valued customer, you deserve
a simple gest of appreciation from your credit card company.
That's why I discover matches all the cash back you've

(10:40):
Learn more, discover dot com slash match limitations they do apply. Well.
If we're done with Tebow, the one guy we got
to talk about is Debot t J from Tebow to
Debot all this late breaking news that Deebo Samuel is
now tremendously unhappy with the San Francisco forty Niners. Uh.
(11:02):
Bobby Thompson who covers not that Bobby Thompson who covers
the NF It that'd be a hell of a cool
uh and Uh says that how Deebo Samuel has made
his stance known. He's frustrated with the forty Niners and
it seems he wants to play elsewhere. And he's someone
that we found out a day ago didn't want to
go through any offseason workouts because he wants a new contract.
(11:24):
Make that call F dam picks, F damn picks, F
dam picks. Make that d Bo, he make the F
them picks a J. Brown. Every wide receiver not named
Christian Kirk is extremely upset because none of them are
getting paid and they all want to get paid. They
see Christian Kirk getting four years and seventy two million
from the Jagbars, which is gonna turn out to be
(11:44):
the biggest contract of the off season, because it's screwed
everybody that's got a wide receiver. Oh no, no, they're
all mad. Mike Harmon call Jets making F them picks
off for all these guys. You can get all these guys.
They all want out. Teams are having trouble it in
them under the capits why they don't have new contracts.
F then picks forget a J. Brown was great yesterday.
(12:05):
Hey Deebo Samuel is even better and he's even more upset.
Call F then picks go get Deebot deep bow deep
bow Deebo go make that call. Yeah. And if you
look up Debo and just do a quick search, like
the first three stories are fueled by you on Jets
team blogs. That is incorrect. That is, don't get him.
It may seem true, but that is incorrect. That's not well.
(12:27):
I I just think it makes for a better narrative
if you don't want driving driving that boat. But look,
we we had the A. J. Brown and folks were
posting stuff when he had his surgeries last year about
how much he loved the Titans and everything's like, come
on pay that guy, Like, well, if you it's the
old rule of thumb. If you don't have to, you don't,
(12:47):
and you try to figure out how you work it
with deebo Uh, it's the same thing you mentioned Christian Kirk,
So I have to segue there. I'm I'm minding the clock.
Christian Kirk, to me is a guy and it has
been an unpopular at Swollen Dome because you can you
can follow up with others you've already hated this take.
Um is he's the outlier. Okay, the Jaguars overpaid, and
(13:07):
anybody with half a brain sees it. No disrespect to
Christian Kirk and his abilities, but he got paid far
beyond what his accomplishments to date and seemingly his ceiling
are just like Tom Brady and the hey will you
take the Tom Brady discount? Those are outliers. Okay, those
are the ones. I get it, But do these guys
(13:33):
they're not they're calling their agents saying, hey, if he
got twenty million, I got twenty I want out. Somebody's
going to pay me. That's the thing. I don't care
smart enough to just at least I don't stand. They're saying,
the Jaguars really need to overpay because sorry, Jacksonville guys,
they stink and nobody wanted to go play there, okay,
(13:56):
which meant everybody got an extra couple of commas when
it came out. You need what how many more million?
What do we got? We got plenty of room under
the cap, right, yep, So Christian Kirk got paid when
he should have. So what you have to do with
your wide receiver? Who's saying I need this because well
that guy got that. It's like, well, Davante Adams and
and uh Tyreek Hill are different examples, right, because they're
(14:20):
on that next next contract. But you gotta sit down
and just say, all right, just because they're dumb, doesn't
mean that the other thirty teams, assuming you're including the
one that's already out there and jackson does out because
they've already spent their money, uh, that the other thirty
aren't gonna come rushing to the table. With a monster
deal just because of what Christian Kirk got right. I mean,
(14:41):
it's just not gonna it's not gonna flow that way.
And you have to, you know, make them understand the
realities here. But it doesn't mean that they have. They
don't it. Where they play, somebody's going to pay me.
A look, I like playing here in San Francisco. But
if you're not gonna pay me, I'll even go to
the Jets because they're gonna pay me. They'll go and
the Jets. Again. Well, because I'm saying teams will go anywhere.
(15:03):
But if I say even the Jets, that's a look
in the mirror moment where you go, oh wow, man,
I really I would go to the Jets. Uh, look,
they would go wide. Receivers will go where you're gonna
pay me. I'll get your money, all right. That's the conversation. Hey,
this is not right. I want to get paid. I'll
get you somewhere somebody's gonna pay. I got a couple
of teams that wanted great. I can get you four years,
eighty five million, sixty three million guaranteed great. Whereas it
(15:25):
it's the Jets, it's the Jaguars that I don't care. Great,
I'm getting paid. I'm getting paid. I don't want to
miss out. That's what that's what wide receivers think. Hey,
everybody's getting paid. Now I'm gonna go get paid. Somebody's
going to pay me. The destination is pretty irrelevant. As
long as I get as long as the check signs
and I can catch a lot of passes, that's all
I care about, because that's that's what the big star
(15:45):
wide receiver care about. Catching passes every week and getting paid.
That's it. That's it, because it doesn't matter. You could
lose thirty eight seventeen, but if the star wide receiver
catches twelve passes hundred forty four yards, he's happy, had
a great day. They care about catching passes, getting paid,
and you can do that anywhere. Doesn't winning. It doesn't matter,
because that's why you would go to the Jets. Winning
doesn't matter. But catch it passes, getting paid, that's all
(16:05):
you need. That's all it is. So what should I
just say, he'd look really good catching balls from justin
fields and work. Sure? Why not? Anybody doesn't? Yes, of course, anybody,
of course, justin fields. Of course. Of course you're the captain. Yes,
of course, of course, yes, yes, of course, of course

a very interesting day in Tom Brady Drama. I got

up next. Keep it right here Fox with prices, Staring

three time pro bowler Lavarrington, and I couldn't be more
(17:31):
excited to announce a new podcast called up on Game.
What is up on Game? You asked, along with my
fellow pro bowler t J. Hushman's Otta and Super Bowl champion.
That's right, Plexico Burrs. You can only name a show
with that type of talent on it. Up on Game.
We're going to be sharing our real life experiences loaded
(17:51):
with teachable moments. Listen to Up on Game with Me,
LaVar Arrington, t J Hudgmansatta, and Plexico Burds on the
Heart radio app, Apple Podcast or wherever you get your
podcast from. Well, a final NBA game of the night underway.
We saw Jimmy Buckets go for nine. It seemed like, uh,
(18:16):
it's just begun. Uh. Miami wins Minnesota and Memphis. It
is all Memphis and this one. In the middle of
the third quarter, they're up eighty three fifty eight New
Orleans and Phoenix a one point game. The Pelicans with
the lead with five minutes to go in the first quarter.
We'll have more on these games coming up. But you
know the thing is, Mike, we were talking about the
Deebo Samuel on the f them pick story Right now,
(18:39):
every day we're getting the story of a new wide
receiver that is unhappy and he wants out because he
wants to get paid. Sure, that's that's they want. They
all want to get paid. Deebo Samuel not going to
offseason workouts, He's not he's not there. We just had
the report that he's really unhappy and he wants to
get paid, and he and he wants out. Other teams
are monitoring same thing for A J. Brown. He was
(19:00):
so upset Titans aren't gonna pay him, he scrubbed the
Titans from his social media profile, put out a tweet
that I'm a bad teammate. Now I'm gonna do what
I have to do. A J. Brown is gettable. DK Metcalf,
as much as the Seahawks say we love him, they
have no room for a twenty million dollar year wide
receiver because they're rebuilding. Right. Terry mclau in the same way. Right,
the fourth guy on the list, but he's still pretty good.
(19:22):
He's sitting out. He wants a new contract. Like I said,
all of these guys just see the other people getting paid,
and they're saying someone's gonna pay me. I don't care
who get ready if the if. The off season up
until now has been about a different quarterback getting traded
every day. Watch the great wide receiver Derby between now
(19:42):
in the draft, watch all these guys, and you're gonna
see f them picks offers coming in and you're gonna
see Deebo move. You're gonna see a J. Brown move,
You're gonna see Metcalf move. Because now we're getting to
it now, Teams saying, Okay, hey, we have some picks
we really would like to get so and so, but
boy really like to get Debo. Let's call and see
what we do. Because it's a wide receiver. It's not
gonna be a crazy um f them picks offer like
(20:05):
it is for someone like Russell Wilson. But just watch.
This is gonna be the great wide receiver Derby. Of
all of these guys, watch, I'll give you a bold prediction,
at least three of them get traded. Sometime in the
next you get three, and with sometime the next seven
to nine days, three of them will get traded because
they all want out and teams know, well, we can't
(20:25):
sign them because whatever reason we can't write we don't
want to, we don't believe in extending them early, or
we don't have the money into the salary cap. We
can replace wide receivers in the draft because usually wide
receiver the first couple of rounds is a target rich position.
So yeah, we can make this trade happen. There are
people who want to deal in as people who want
to make deals. Three wide receivers get dealt sometime in
(20:46):
the next week, guarantee. Wow, I really like the bold proclamation.
Of course, I would like all four of the teams,
I mean one of them from a foot. They just
want to talk football, so they'll answer your call. Operators
standing by in Washington right now, please talk to us
about football. But the the idea of all being dealt,
like I, I want everybody to get every dime they're worth.
(21:09):
Here's the thing, they're under contract. So now it becomes
the are you willing to sit out? And remember they
that team still is going to hold your rights for
a long time. And even if you wanted to go
in and and fight it and end up in the UH,
you know, getting into your average at the top five
(21:29):
five guys at the position, and and they put the
tag on you. That's still a nice hefty bump based
on where the marketplace is now. Obviously, Yeah, you want
the long term deal, you want the security, you want
the massive signing bonus that comes through. Because all of
these guys are second round picks two right, second and
(21:49):
third round if if some memory serving on all of them,
so you know, you don't have that built in fifty
year option fund that you would otherwise. So you have
a you teams that have some cap space, but for
the most part, there's there's not a not a lot
of teams that that do. I mean, obviously Indianapolis does,
but do they have enough draft capital to go and
(22:13):
get Matt Ryan another op option? I mean for Caroline,
and they've got a lot of cap space. I guess
you can make a deal and try to take those
first round picks and and give Sam Donald the best
opportunities to succeed. I did that just for you, Sam, Sam, Sam, Sam,
Sam Sam. I wanted to. I wanted to celebrate Sam
(22:33):
for you. Otherwise, most teams have, you know, somewhere between
eight and fifteen million, and then you've got the the
ones that are already in the red or damn close
to it the Falcons and the Patriots and the aforementioned
Forts and Titans right there at two million or less,
both in terms of available cat money. So it's trying
(22:54):
to figure out what you're doing because it's it's all
pieces of a puzzle, right, because you're not just trying
to get him paid now. Obviously the player is concerned.
But for the team, especially San Francisco, they're looking a
year ahead. Do a couple of defensive players, including Nick
Bosa that have to get paid for Tennessee, there might
be a lot of change of foot So do they
go all in if they can put the assets together
(23:16):
to to to add instead of subtract, to say, all right,
Ryan Tannehill's finishing up his deal, and maybe we just
scrapped this whole thing and move on right there. There's
a lot to it as you piece it. But I
like your bold proclamation that three of these four guys
end up getting dealt. Three guys go and the next
next level state days. Let's roll the dice. I'm telling
(23:37):
you it's it's there, and the Jets will get all
three of them. All. Oh, it's as long as that's
where we got to in this process, right, I mean,
because yeah, and that's that's definitely what you have for
this year, is that you do have another, uh, several teams,
what is its six or seven teams that have multiple
(24:00):
picks in the first round. Obviously, we'll start doing our
own mock drafts here in short order. I really need
to catch up because I think some guys are on
fifteen point oh uh in terms of their mock draft season.
Every day do content Why did you shuffle those guys up?
Because my kids, you know, got to the computer and
they changed up the spreadsheet, and I thought, I like
(24:21):
the way it looked, and if you read how the
team's put together, it spells something really funny as you
go down the acronyms. No, it's it's gonna be an
interesting seven eight days because you still have so many
teams with those extra picks, and teams even before they're
finishing free agency or going through those three days, are
(24:43):
already as they get onto the field for the first time.
Right today, I did a bit with a guy in Chicago,
and you know, there's a lot about justin fields, getting
on the the sidelines and getting into meeting rooms with
folks for the first time, and and the excitement thereof
and eames all across the NFL. As we've watched guys
reporting and the big stories of guys not they're they're
(25:06):
trying to figure out who they are, at least in
a very base way to to push forward. I was like,
all right, do we like this position group? Did we
like what the white board work that they did? If not,
all right, maybe cornerbacks now become a bigger deal on
our board, or we don't like the strength and where
we're at on offensive line. So suddenly that changes. Uh,
(25:28):
the the parameters of that final week of you know,
dialing down what you need and maybe your phone phone
number starts to leak into more pockets. As you're suggesting that,
we still have another flurry of activity. And I hope
that's the case, right, because the organized chaos is a
good thing. Twitter at how about a fresca Mike gets
swollen done the Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon. Uh
(25:49):
that Tom Brady bold prediction, I've got one big bowld
for wide receiver is another one for Tom Brady coming
your way in nineties seconds. But first let's say hye
to Brian Fenley, who's got all the big doings in
the wide world of sports, including the Mets with the
double header sweep, which is the biggest story in the
entire sports world. And by the way, I was gonna
lead with that, they have more wins than anybody else
(26:11):
right now in Major League Baseball, and it's probably gonna
be the only time this season they're gonna have more
wins than anybody in Major League Baseball. So we might
as well celebrate the little successes in life, right Jason, Yeah, Yeah,
let's let's talk about those doings. As you said. In
the NBA, Jimmy Butler sets a new career playoff five
with forty five points. He went fifteen for twenty five
(26:34):
from the floor in a heat win one fIF one
oh five over the Hawks. So now in that first
round playoffs series out of the East, it is two
oh in favor of Miami. By the way, Trade Young
ten turnovers probably not his best doubting although he did
have twenty five points. It doesn't matter if you've got
that many turnovers, doesn't exactly. By the way, as we
(26:57):
turn it over to the second game of the night
in NBA playoff lore, how about what John Moran is doing.
Pump takes the top of the arc preak gifts for Clark,
gets it back, goes into the Lank Hanks, it scoops
around Paul Anthony Towns. Highlight reel laff that is Eric
castle Tyn on the Memphis Grizzlies radio network, John Moran
going off in the second half here twenty one points,
(27:18):
eight rebounds, nine as is closing it on triple double
as Memphis is mauling the Timberwolves two to seventy two.
As the grizz looked even that series at one out
of the West and sticking in the West, it's the
Pelicans taking down Jason Smith's sons twenty five to twenty
a little under two minutes to go in the first
quarter in Brandon Ingram has nine points. Memphis excuse me,
(27:42):
Phoenix one Game one of that series. Also something to mention, guys,
and I know you you'll probably touch on this a
little bit later, but reports out by l A Times
and ESPN that Jerry West he wants an apology and
he wants to be taken out of the NBA. Excuse me.
The HBO series Winning Time, which depicts the Lakers and
(28:05):
the eighties and in nineties and such and all of that.
So he wants them to take his name out, retract,
apologize for what he thinks is unfair, cruel depiction of
him in the show. And there has been a full
on with his legal team note out to the show
(28:26):
about all of that. And then just quickly, guys, from
a Major League Baseball perspective, there's a ton of games
going on. We mentioned that Jason Smith Mets won both
of their double header. The Anchors are still playing into
the ninth thinning against what is now this Tigers team.
It's four to two, and that one is still going on.
(28:46):
The Tampa Bay Rays have taken lead against the Cup
six to five and the ninth thinning. And how about
the Kansas City Royals says they are able to hang
on in the seventh leaving two men on base? Did
the Twins four to three in the seventh? Casey on
top of that, let's get it back to two guys
who are always on top. It's Jason Smith and my
best friend Mike Harmon. Thank you very much, Brian family.
(29:10):
So today finally we got the Tom Brady story out
in the open. Al Right, this whole rumor that in
the offseason, Tom Brady retired because he wanted to find
a way to get out of Tampa and to Miami
where he become quarterback slash part owner of the team.
Sean Payton would become the head coach, and this is
how the Dolphins are going forward. But the Brian Flores
(29:32):
lawsuit pour cold water on that. Brady realized he was
still going to play, decided to come back and play
for Tampa Bay. Now we've talked for a long time
about how this needs to be reported on more. I mean,
this is a story that Blue Checkmark people have and
Mike Florio and Ben Valen and for the w E.
I I mean, this is a story that's out there
and finally it's being addressed. Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason
(29:54):
Light talked about it today, was asked, Hey, dude, what's
going on with Miami Man. He's an ad really a
topic of conversation right now. He's put a lot of
chatter about Tom joins with Miami Dolphins next year as
a part owner. Given that that it's out there, it's
been an effort on the organization's part to maybe offer
Tom something to kind of seal him with you guys
(30:15):
for the future. No, we haven't had those discussions. So
all the only discussions I've had that we've had with
Tom is when he came back and we're excited about
this year and we're excited to get going. Uh yeah,
So here's my here's my bold pretty Actually, this is
a guarantee. Now you're going to guarantee you're going out,
(30:35):
Charles Barkley. Now I guarantee now whether or not Miami
becomes Tom Brady's ultimate destination. Maybe maybe that's what he
wants to do, and maybe that's something that he thought
he could pull off, but he couldn't. Right, we told
you he retired for strategic reasons. That was he wanted
to get away from Tampa and he couldn't, so he
came back. He's gonna play this year with Tampa. There
(30:57):
is no way Tom Brady is signing a contract with
Tampa Bay this year. He is going to play this
year at Tampa, become an unrestricted free agent at the end,
and go wherever he wants to go and get back
to his destination, whether it's Miami, whether it's San Francisco. Hey,
if the Jets are great and Zach Wilson stinks, he'll
even say screw it. I hated the Jets, but I'll
(31:17):
go there because I can't stand Bill Belichick. He will
not sign a contract because I guarantee you he's upset
that he has a contract for this year that was
too hard to get out of. Remember there was that
back and forth between Brady and Tampa where hey, if
Brady comes back, would you trade him? And Bruce Arian
says no, bad business. Uh, there's a little bit of
contentiousness there. So I guarantee you he's upset. I wish
(31:39):
I wasn't on the hook for this year with Tampa Bay.
He is not going to sign a new deal with them.
He is gonna play out this year. Maybe he retires,
keep his options open, maybe retires, maybe he wants to
come back. No, he's going to find a way now
to get to his next destination, which is Miami, San Francisco,
someplace else, because he's had that in mind. Now that
he's proven I can win super Bowls on still a
(32:00):
great quarterback. When the Super Bowl with Tampa Bay last year,
we're in the playoffs again, it was second m v
P voting. Yeah, Now I can continue to write my
ticket because people will believe that I can play until
I'm fifty years old. Nobody did that before, even when
he became a free agent with Brady's forty two Man,
I don't know all is it worth it? And nobody
wanted Brady for some reason. Well, I'm gonna go win
(32:20):
a Super Bowl and still show him a great quarterback.
Well all right, now, other teams oh yeah, oh yeah,
Brady Till, Yeah yeah, where were you two years ago?
But that's what he wants to do. He is never
gonna sign with them this year. He will play it out,
be a free agent and get to his next destination
in the off season, guarantee proof of performance. Right, they
wanted to see him do it without Bill and whatever.
(32:41):
You know, guys have been perpetrating in terms of trying
to tear down the legacy of Tom Brady low these
many years. Uh, jealousy and hatred and anger, uh and
not opening their eyes to the reality of what the
National Football League has been. Uh. Yeah, you play out
this year. There's no reason to sign a deal at
this point, right you you play it out and then
(33:03):
you make your options available. Look, versus arians is up
in the front office now, right he whatever his job title,
that they established, so it don't matter. Uh So does
he get along with the new people in charge? And
does he get along with Byron Leftwich? How much of
a contentious relationship is that, Because you certainly have plenty
of talent around. He still has to sweet talk Rob
(33:26):
Gronkowski into coming back. But other than that, you've got
a team that's ready to play and ready to go,
assuming worse is healthy in that offensive line. Jensen came
back right, convinced him to stay, So I'll be just fine.
But yeah, you'll have an off season of everybody trying
to court Tom Brady recognizing, Hey, not only is it
good for business in terms of box office and the
(33:48):
number of uh prime time games you get and all
of that fun because you know, primetime games with dynamic pricing,
boost that a little bit more, boost that a little
bit more, and your ticket revenue, uh and in your
arking and everything else. Right, So you play a little
bit of a game that way, and then if you
can make some promises that really can't show up in
an NFL contract for the future, then sure, then you
(34:11):
have that part of the conversation with Miami. It's interesting
because Stephen Ross may not have the team after this,
so he may have to negotiate with a whole new
set of people. By time, he just comes in and
owns it himself. He know, have to the coach with anybody,
it's Tom Brady just shows up and puts on the jackets.
That yeah, I'm the owner now. So what he retires
in week twelve if they take the team away from
(34:32):
Steven Ross. Uh. You know we've had a good run.
We're ten and one, but I'm fulfilling a lifelong dream.
Now I'm now the owner of the Miami Dolphins. I'm sorry,
thank you, but I'm now the only you remember when
it was j Lo and Mark, Anthony, Serena Williams, all
these other peoplen't hope I am the captain Now now
it's me and Alex Guerrero. We own this team. And
(34:53):
over there we've got four different Margaritaville theme bars that
we've teen with Jimmy Buffett. Uh and the will be
a Calypso band in the second fourth quarters. Joining us
now on the hotline longtime friend of the show, Fox
Sports Radio MLB Network insider extraordinaire, who now unfortunately is
going to have to pass a test before he is
(35:15):
allowed on the show tonight. It is John Paul Morossi, JP.
Are you ready to pass your one question quiz to
participate in the show tonight. There's a lot of pressure here.
I have not taken the test since college, and even
then I was not exactly a model student. So I'm
a little bit nervous. But please proceed with the question.
(35:38):
All right, here's your question. Baseball has been played for
almost a hundred and fifty years. Now, I'm going to
ask you this right now. Who has the most wins
in Major League Baseball? Who does it? Who does Who's
got him? Who's got him? Who's got the most win tonight?
(35:59):
The answer to that question is the New York Mets. Hey,
John PAULA Rossi's gonna be with us tonight. Canna answer
all kinds of great questions York's Mets. And listen, they
have had they they have not had, as we know,
a perfect start to the season by any stretch. Of course.
They've had players already on the covid. I L Nemo
(36:19):
comes back tonight. Uh. And now, of course Scherzer looks
like himself, tremendous vintage like performance. I gotta tell you
there's a reason why I think I I did frighten
you earlier on in the season when I talked about
how bullish I've been on the Mets, and at least
their current performance is validating my optimism for them. They
(36:41):
have the most runs in Major League Baseball, they've allowed
the second fewest runs. I mean, really, I'm looking at
their what's the Mets magic number? That's your my question,
What's what's the magic numbers? We talked about it last week,
right Tyler McGill. Tonight it was six innings, four and
runs you had. They still found a way to win.
They had lind Door. I think to me, that's why
the biggest difference, if you're really going to break it
(37:01):
down from a baseball sense, they got the lind Or
they thought they were trading for uh when when last
season began, and he is now anchoring to line up
batting third. I think you've seen McNeil obviously, he's played well.
Setting the table at the top Escobar book show. Walter
is a huge fan of Eduardo Escobar coming in this year.
So for a lot of different reasons, they're they're in
(37:23):
pretty good shape. The Phillies, to me, still are a
team that could be dangerous, but right now the Mets
to the more complete team one through. I don't know
JP sures are going on in two pitches tonight. I
I don't know that. I like it. Fine, he's fine
out Well, I'll tell you what we know this about Suzer,
(37:43):
and he has been very honest in the past. Uh.
You think about playoffs with the Nationals, even last year
with the Dodgers. He's not gonna push himself past the
point where he's comfortable and and to me, he he
knows his body. I don't think Max would have thrown
that many hitches if he didn't feel like he was
in a good place to recover and be back out
(38:04):
there in five days. Yeah. No, it was completely the
tongue in cheek of the early part of the season
and what we're seeing in terms of pitch accounts, because
you know, JP the number one topic in Los Angeles
since the Lakers have been eliminated from anything meaningful. Uh
is still Clayton Kershaw a week later? Still Kershaw, more
more so than more so than Freddie Freeman hitting a
(38:26):
home run his first Dodger home run in his first
at bath against the Braves. Now Now, that was a
pretty great moment last night, no, no question, But you
know that's happy. So you only get far with that, right.
Here's what I would say to you about the Kershaw thing.
He effectively told Dave Roberts after six innings that he
(38:49):
had one more inning left. So I just don't know
how you would take the best left hander of your
generation and push him beyond where he said he was
comfortable going after six innings to push him beyond that.
I just think he made the right They both made
the right call. Kershaw made the right call. Dave Roberts
(39:10):
made the right call. I think the standard for the
Dodgers right now is winning the last game of the
season in October, and if you have to save an
inning here there in April, you do it. I know
it's not necessarily the most dramatic way to answer that question,
but I really think that the Dodgers made the right
call there. Well, clearly they're looking ahead, going boy, hey,
we're looking at the Mets in the NLC. Come on,
(39:31):
everything lined up? We got every They're wondering, how does
Kershaw match up against Tyler and McGill in Game one? Well, maybe, sure, sir,
we'll see, Hey, so JP, we're starting to get the
stories because we're starting to pay attention out of teams
going to Toronto. In fact, Aaron Boone was asked about
it today, Hey Yankees, you guys had a lot of
(39:51):
unvaccinated players. What's your roster gonna be like when you
go to Toronto coming up in a week? He'says, I
think we're gonna be Okay, we're starting to see teams
now missing players when they go to Toronto. We can
tell the ones that are not vaccinated. Are we going
to see big numbers for these teams as they start going,
We're gonna see seven, eight, ten, guys that suddenly can't play.
Will it be one or two? What do you think
(40:12):
these numbers are going to be? You know, it's a
great question, and obviously in the case of the athletics
it was three. And then the unique thing about the
rules now is that you have to then, at least
as it currently sits now, this is sort of a
a sort of separate track of decision making, and it's
this is really obviously a matter of governmental policy that
(40:35):
could change any day, of course, but as it stands now,
under current law, if you're going to fly back into
the US, you have to test negative before you board
that plane within twenty four hours of departure. And so
while while Oakland was affected by not having three players
(40:55):
go on the trip to Toronto, they had even more
players test positive on the re entry test to get
back into the States, and so they're not available until
they can. Obviously, you have to test negative across the border,
and and then you have to have tested negative twice
to be able to get back on the active roster.
So I think, is it is it an issue to
(41:18):
be dealt with? Of course? I mean, it's it's it's
here in front of us, uh, Charlie Montoyo said today
he was asked about it. I think his answer was
was correct and fair that the rules are the rules,
and at this point in time, you know, you think
about on paraphrasing year, you know, last year and then
the year before that, there weren't necessarily a ton of
people feeling sorry for them for not being able to
(41:38):
play in Toronto because they went a season and a
half basically without being able to play there. So I
think it's to me, we are all learning new things
every day with respect to regulations. Obviously, I flew this week.
On the way there, I had to wear a mask
on the way back. That the rules have changed, so
we're we're all we're all in a different world, of course,
(42:00):
is as as we're all learning with respect of the pandemic.
But I do think this that if if there was
any illusion or belief that when the season began that
we were done with this, and that's clearly not not
the case. I mean, when you think about the the
sub the sub omo cron variant that we've heard a
lot about here in recent weeks, there are still cases
(42:20):
out there, and so I think caution is still required,
and not just required, but it is to your point
and the question, it's a competitive advantage to keep your
players a healthy and be to be vaccinated. And that's
just that's the way it is in terms of having
your full complimented players able to go. We can certainly
(42:41):
there are plenty of other programs where where we could
debate and discuss the merits of the policies, but the
reality is the rules exist and teams that have large
numbers of unvaccinated players are at a disadvantage. That's just
the simple reality of where the game is right now.
Based on the entry and exit regulations going into Canada.
(43:01):
Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with Mike Harman on
the Hotline with us n h L Network. But right
now we're talking all things Major League Baseball MLB Network broadcaster.
I'm michigander and a man who needs your help. He
is just a little over two thousand followers away from
hitting the big four hundred k. You can find him
on Twitter at John Morrossy. That's right, j O N
(43:23):
M O R O S. I leave out that hit
h because mom said so, I'm wait what wait, what
happens first, John MORROSSI gets to that four hundred thousand
or Miguel Cabrera gets to three thousand. Thanks for taking
my my questions question, I get there first first, without question. Uh,
(43:46):
it is within his control. He is now only handful
of hits the way and obviously, guys to me, when
you think about the select group of players with fives
and three thousand hits, I mean that is that is,
as a Bob Costas would say, the inner circle of
the Hall of Fame, I mean that is a head
is a remarkable company to be in, and Miguel belongs.
(44:08):
He deserves to be in it. So it's it's been
fun to watch his journey, fun to watch his career
and and covered of course for a lot of years
in Detroit. And it's also been really I think engaging
to see how much that this young team is really
enliven mcguel and giving him this new boost I think
entering this this big round number. So it's been fun
to watch he's I think he's really it seems like
(44:30):
his his bad a little more alive this year than
it was last year, and there's not that same pressure
I think that was going along with the five home runs.
This is a much It's not an easy milestone by
any stretch, of course, but I think it's a little
calmer one for him to take in and achieve, and
I think he can maybe savor this a bit more
as as compared to last year was a bit of
an anxiety inducing pursuit, I believe on the road to
(44:52):
five home runs all right, So let me follow up
to that. I mean, I haven't been to a Hall
of Fame h and been able to wander around the
last couple of years. I remember there were a lot
of pictures of Pete Rose, even though he couldn't be
in for that three thousand hit five home runs? Is
there a picture of Rafael Palmeiro that someone is just
slid into the Hall of Fame just so he's included? Uh,
And be why aren't we talking about Miguel Cabrera more
(45:15):
in that capacity? Is it because of Detroit and Florida
being the homes? You know? It's it's a great question.
I think that UM. With respect to Palmero, I there
are players who have uh shall we say, complicated or
or sullied legacies that that have artifacts in the Hall.
(45:37):
So I cannot recall if I saw Palmo artifacts when
I was last there. But there are parts of the story.
There are parts of the steroid or that are explicitly
mentioned in in the Hall of Fame. It's part of
the game's history, So that museum portion of it is there,
and I really admire the the totality of the history
of the Hall of Fame tells. With respect to Miguel I,
(46:00):
I do think, yes, I think market size could could
have some bearing on this. He's someone that has never
really given all that many long, wide ranging UM interviews
in terms of being out there in public. Uh, He's
always been a quieter player in terms of how he
(46:20):
has handled the media attention. I remember, even going for
the triple Crown, he didn't really want to talk all
that much. He didn't love the attention even going after
something like that. So I think he it's probably a
function of how he has played the game the the
perhaps the more subtle way that that he has played
the last several years, where it's been uh, not the
same loud power numbers, of course, but but listen that
(46:43):
that debate, the Cabrera Trout m VP debates parts one
and two of and thirteen. We're pretty pretty unique and
and rather contentious, so I think when we talked a
whole lot about him about a decade ago. But you're
right that since the Tigers last appeared in the playoffs
in twenty fourteen, UM, he has not had the same
notoriety around the game, and I think this this milestone
(47:06):
hopefully gives them a much deserved boost. Hey, JP, speaking
of the Tigers, I the the baseball world the eye
on the game. Tonight, the Yankees win, but in true
Yankee fashion, even a win has met with the sky
is falling. Garrett Cole throws sixty eight pitches in an
inning and two thirds tonight, strikes out three in the first,
(47:27):
walks a bat her, walks four guys in the second,
gets pulled out of the game. What is going on
with him? I mean, I didn't think it was possible
to throw sixty eight pitches and in less than two innings.
I didn't think you could do that, right, And and uh,
I believe Tyler Alexander on the Tiger's side. I think
it was forty two pitches in the first inning, and
then he was he was pulled. That was. It was
(47:48):
a strange day. And of course the Yankees scored two
runs the first inning on a on a missed pop
up that traveled about five ft from home plate. So
there's there was a bizarre night down at the ballpark
in Detroit. A couple of things. Number One, I I
really try not to judge too much about pitching on
a cold day in April in Detroit. I love Detroit.
(48:10):
I love April in Detroit. It's not the best venue
to to really judge pitching, especially given everything we know
about Garrit Cole's last year, and and and the crackdown
against the sticky substances, and how this is probably a
day where in the past you would have used that
stuff liberally to be honest with you on a cold day.
(48:31):
That is sort of that had become rather commonplace in
in Major League Baseball. So I think he's still searching
for it a little bit. Um he's never quite fully
gotten on track. Of course, we saw the wild card game.
You go back to the game against Boston, he wasn't
fully healthy there. He's just still kind of building back up.
I understand the scrutiny on him, but I would say this,
(48:53):
I want to give it one like one more month
if he if he is still if his e r
A Is in the fives or sixes in the middle
of May, I think then some alarm is warranted. But
he would not be the He's not the only picture
having a little bit of an aberrational month of April
coming out of a lockout in cold weather in the
Midwest and the Northeast. He's on Twitter at John Morrossy.
(49:16):
That is at John Morrossy MLB Network, Fox Sports Radio Insider.
JP is always appreciated and congratulations on scoring on your quiz.
To begin the interview, thank you. I am going to
be ready for that question to come back as long
as the answer is Mets. If it's not the answer
any longer, you'll begin with a different question. Take it easy,
(49:39):
but we'll talk to you all the best, guys. It's
always a pleasure to talk baseball, do you guys, Thanks
so much, my JP. Great stuff from John Paul Morossi
