Jeanette Park: Fifty cars impounded, 900 infringement notices over long weekend

Fifty vehicles were impounded and more than 900 infringement notices dished out in Bay of Plenty, Manawatu, Wellington, and Canterbury over Matariki weekend. 

Superintendent Jeanette Park told Mike Hosking this is not a new issue for police.

Big weekend as the police went after the boy race
his Saturday night across Wellington Bay. A plenty in Canterbury
we had four hundred and seventy two infringement notice this issued,
sixty nine vehicles seized and pounded or ordered off the road,
eleven cars were pinkle green stick and six people were
forbidden to drive, four people had licenses suspend at thirteen
at excess boost relieving Central District Commander Superintendent Jeanette Parkers
with us, very good morning to you. So the work

was clearly out there to be done, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Absolutely yeah, look at disrupting our communities, the people in
these vehicles and causing damage injuries as definitely not going
to be tolerated. So we were out about.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
As successful as you would claim it to be. Were
you surprised at how much of it there was to
clean up?

Speaker 2 (00:43):
I thank this is not a new issue for us.
We've been policing this for some time and definitely, you know,
we went out and actually advised that we would be there.
And when you see results such as nine hundred infringement
notices across the districts, it's not good enough.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
And what happens to those infringement notices. These sort of
people who dutifully pay the fines.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Well, so that's interesting because actually we had bases working
across in Wellington and they seized vehicles where people had
outstanding fines. And I'll remember one situation where they actually
one person on the side of the road paid they're
three one thousand dollar fine, so they didn't have the
vehicle sees.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Three thousand dollars on the spot they paid it.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Absolutely unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Yeah, pink or green STICKERD means what.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
It's unroadworthy vehicles that so you know, you get vehicles
that have been lowered, that have been altered and they
are still on the road and they're not roadworthy.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
How many cars actually got taken off people and they
won't get them back hence solving the problem.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
So there was fifty vehicles impounded and varying reasons. So
they will be managed according to what the legislation lifts
were those.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
And who are the people behind the wheel The same
sort of people you would expect to round up on
a Saturday night that drive these sort of cars and
do this sort of thing.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Look sadly, these are young people, so they are teens
and up. I mean, you know, on occasions parents I
don't know they're out there. There was an example in
Wellington where our staff went to an address that they
identified with a vehicle that you know, these young people
were seventeen and wearing technical vests and being aggressive. Turned

out that they were the learner driver and the mother
rang her some to get her car back. Cheers.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Is this a will it have a chilling effect? Or
is there more with this came from?

Speaker 2 (02:38):
But I think this will definitely have a chilling effect,
and certainly we're not finished. And for the people that
were involved in illegal behavior, I mean, you know, we
had eagle about, we had a lot of support. We're
getting support from the community which is tremendous, and our
staff is focused and we will continue. So people who
were involved in the legal behavior on the nights, we

will follow them up and they may just receive a
knock at the door.
