Dairy owners want more power to make citizens arrests.

The Government's committed to passing four pieces of law and order legislation in the next quarter.

It includes allowing police to ban gang patches, confiscate firearms, more efficiency in the courts, and more rehabilitation for on-remand prisoners.

Chair of the Dairy and Business Owners Group Sunny Kaushal told Mike Hosking that it's a great move.

But he also wants business owners, security guards, and law-abiding citizens to be able to take action when they see crimes.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Government's third Corter Action Plan will focus on law and order.
It's going to pass four bits of law to crack
down on criminal activity, including a band on game patches,
letting police confiscate firearms. Of course, are we at last
onto something effective here? A chair of the Dairy and
Business Owners Group Sunny courtcials back whether a sunny very
good morning to you?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Good morning Mike.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Do you feel that we're getting somewhere or not?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Look, the government is on right track, you know. We
are seeing police getting on front foot. That's a good
sign and there need to be consequences and we haven't
seen this from years, you know. Good to see crackdown
on bad behavior like over the wrong weekend the boydases
were hit with large operations in Wellington, christ Church, Manuatu.
So suddenly we're seeing the efforts coming through here.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Good. What about the courts and whether the justices are
on board around these new laws and sentencing and things
like that. Do you see that yet and do you
worry that they won't ever be on board?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Oh? Look, we need a lot more needs to be
done here. We would like to see powers to security guards,
shopkeepers and to be honest for any right thinking kibi,
we're talking about farmers, So any business owners the citizens
asked powers in most cases do not kick off until
nine pm.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Do you think that as much as you want that
that's realistic. How many dairy owners do you reckon if
given the power, would actually execute a citizen's arrest? Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Well, a majority of them would write because they are
responsible citizens of New Zealand and they know what they're doing.
You know, they should not be attacked every day by
the corporators. And we would like to see some changes.
And also the law of self defense need to be
redefined or clarified.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
I was talking to Mike Mitchell, police Minister, on the
program before un six o'clock this morning. He suggested the
police are basically what you're seeing here is what the
police always wanted to do. In other words, they were
simply held back by the previous government and now they're
doing what they want to do. Would that be your assessment?

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Well, the solution is to going back to the you know,
the the bottle seventeen twenty seventeen model, and the police
need to be out there and that's the deterrent factor.
Most of the keywis would like to see happening right now.
The offenders, they have no fear of law, no fear

(02:13):
of police, no fear of being caught or any consequences whatsoever.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Hopefully things are changing. Sonny good to catch up. Appreciate
to Sonny Koschel, who's the theory in business owners hit.
