It’s been a season full of ups and downs for the Warriors.

After a historic loss to the Titans two weeks ago, they bounced back against the Broncos, taking the win 32-16.

Coach Andrew Webster told Mike Hosking that their season has been very inconsistent.

He said that their good football is probably better than most, but their worst football is probably worse than most.

Webster said that he’s really proud of their win over the weekend, and they just need to find that consistency in their day to day.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time for catch up with Andrew Webster. The last time,
the season was full of hope and expectation. Of course,
since then, like seventy seasons, has been a rollercoaster of
the Titan shocking. Last Saturday, we made a comeback against
the Broncos and all that. So anyway, where are we at?
Andrew Webster back with us?

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Good morning, morning, do you mate?

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Now, it's been a while since we've talked, so let's
do it this way. The season so far summed up
for me from your point.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Of view, I'll be very inconsistent. Good football, probably better
than most, and our worst football is probably worse than most.
So we're not really in the middle enough at the moment.
But I was really proud of the boys. Waited about
it back on the weekend, and we just kind of
find that consistency in the day.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Exactly what do you put it down to? How do
you explain it?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
It's actually hard to put my finger on it, really,
and that's my job to work it out. I think
I think we lost four in a row, and I
feel like the boys really wanted to increase the intensity
in the way we trained. I think that's that had
an impact, and I think it's just made sure our
standards a high and that's what we're trying to do.

(01:07):
So I think if we do that, we're going to
concentrate for longer in game, which will help us. And
if we do that, we're going to get to show
what we can do. But it's mind help to make
sure that we're more consistent what we do every day.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
How do we I don't want to dwell on it,
but the Titans thing was an extraordinary thing. Yeah, and
it was one of there seemed to be no comeback either.
So you can start poorly, that's okay, you can come
back from that, and yet we didn't. How do you
explain that bit of it?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Well, I physically thought were flat, but I just don't
think that's enough excuse to consider sixty points. And the
boys agree, you know that they're taking complete ownership around it.
I got no answer because I didn't see it coming. Often,
if you're not training well, or you put a four
team out behind the park, you probably think enalogy for

(02:00):
tough here, and I'm not once but felt that about
our group, and I could see that coming and my
one thought thought that they wouldn't turn up, and you
might not get everything right, but at least we're going
to put an effort in that everyone can still be
proud of. And yeah, it was a shock to the players,
and it was shocked to man for sure.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
But what do you take out of the comeback we
saw over the weekend against the Broncos. Does that solve
that problem or does it reassure you to some degree.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
That that problem's gone? Really like that, that game had
to go. We had to get rid of the woman
left Australia. The next morning, we had a review in
the hotel and we watched it and we made sure
we didn't walk past it. And then I was really
wrapped the way the boys said the week up, they
were pretty motivated and what they wanted to do. But
I said to the boys, well, you know, as great

(02:53):
as I was against the Broncos and really proud that
we bounced back, we're going to find that style footing
in that game each week. If we want to do that,
we're going to do some really good things in this competition.
If we don't, we're going to keep any consistent and
frustration frustration around the way we play.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
One of the frustrations for you or concerns for you
as we head too, I mean, with what what do
we got left? Nine games? Is it nine weeks? Something
like that?

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Ye?

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Right, So as you head towards the end of the season,
what you want to do obviously get to the eight,
gets to four and all that sort of thing. But
in the finals football, you want to be able to
go into the field in full confidence that you at
least can beat any given side given it becomes a knockout.
Are you confident enough that that's possible yet or not?

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I'm extremely confident in it because, like I said at
the start of the interview, our best football is literally
better than most peoples. I literally think that everyone looks
at our when we were on they think jees. Actually
I think they're probably better than those teams in the competition.
But you'll do it for eighty minutes, and that's what
the good side too. So if we're piecing to you

(03:59):
other for eighty that told football and not like So
that's my job to get that help was to do that.
I'm more than confident we get there. But you know,
I don't want to do that. I don't think we've
even earned the right to talk about finals right now,
at this time last year we probably weren't everyone was
getting encaders as this year we've got a good probably
go as a bit more before start thought about the

(04:20):
final talk to.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Me about injuries. I mean, one of the highlights of
the season surely was the Panthers win with the side
most people have never heard of. So what does that say?
Does that say young men lifting in the occasion of
their life or some depth that we can all be
proud of.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I We'll got some depth and definitely people lifted for
the occasion. We also turned around and did it against Reclase.
I think we had more injuries and more players out
of the week after. Yeah, no, we're definitely We've definitely
got some definitely got some young gloss coming through. I
think our reserve grades currently second. We won the Harold
basis this year. We've got our whole club for the

(04:58):
Fishers in good shape. And if these players are out
of formal or they're injured like it were, I think
you can call on And we've had a bit of
a X man hup attitude where we don't get overawed
or worried that a certain players not playing. If anything,
we get more excited about the challenge and the person
here comes in eager a job to do, and he's
got to do it, and we're backing.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Which brings in I suppose that Tomari Martin conversation. Not
that we want to specifically dwell on that, but how
much do you think how much of the whole Sean
Johnson thing is based around because he's a lightning rod,
because of who he is and all of that that
people have made up their mind about him, or to
Marie Martin, or any change or any decisions you may
or may not make before we even begin the conversation.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
I get asked that all the time. It Shawn and
to Mighty play a lot of good football to go
to the start of last season, won a lot of games. Yeah,
but also almost almost the daily employer of the Year
is probably I thought he was the best player in
the competition. Them to say that is, I mean, she
one of the best players in the world. To Mighty man,

(06:05):
I feel is stilled up during times where people's one
with than available, and as a result of that, I
think you've got to show what it can do. So
I think it's it's I think people probably reading too much,
and I think they're both played football and I think
a lot of clubs I love to half backs and
half backs are pretty rare and in solo, complete face

(06:27):
in both of them. I love the way play I
think I think everybody probably real frustration has just happened.
They came back together and played it and it didn't
look great. But it didn't look great because we conceded
sixty points. I had known to do with our attack,
but for some reason everyone was looking at our attack,
no defense, which that was frustrating.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Exactly. Now, Listen, we talked about depth to Mama again,
what about this injury? Told so, is it like a
crapshoot thing? Will you lose people if you wouldn't expect it?
I mean, is there anything that can be done, you know, physically,
physical training, weights, whatever, that you can protect yourself a
bit more? Is that just life?

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Do you reckon? I don't know. We try and we
try and prevent injuries just as much as we try
and recover people from injuries. So like a lot of
strange work weights, the new exercises I've never ever heard
of in my life to do these things, and there's
a lot of science around it. But yeah, we also
you can't avoid the freak incidents of the broken bones.

(07:25):
Those things, they're pretty hard to control just because of
the force of the game. And looked Martha, they've had
a bad room with the fractures this year. But the
ankle injuries, I think they're so powerful and strong they've
been in them back over and their ankles are stuck
underneath them and the NRLs trying to outlaw that. But
we've been getting a lot of those injuries this season.

(07:48):
But the big one, the big one for me is
believes are very professional and you know, and we've had
a great staff that help us with that. But I
think the game is getting harder. I think the whole
NRL struggling with injuries at the main and because they're
just playing at such a such a speed in the
balls and play for so long, physically harder to me exactly.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
And as much as we may obsess about wins and
losses and stuff from an individual team's point of view,
what's your observation of the quality of the NRL competition,
given that any side can beat any side clearly as
you've experienced.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Honestly, Glad, it's going to be one of the best
products in the world. I really do I mean New
Zealanders are obsessed with the Warriors and really proud of them.
I think they're also obsessed with NURL. The moment the
product of watching other games of Pugby League, and like
I says, the balls and play for sixteen minutes, and
balls and Play and other cats for thirty I know

(08:41):
which game I want to watch. You know, I think
the NURL done a great trouble with it, and you know,
we're really lucky that we are. The game is in
great shape. But I don't think you can take it
for granted or mess it up or play around with
it too much. We're going to We're going to make
sure we keep the parduck what it is because it's
awesome for everyone.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Does that answer the question the debate thats been had
around rugby the balls and play for sixty minutes and
if it's in play and we're watching something that you know,
there's your problem with rugby.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah. I mean I don't like to get too much
into it because I don't know enough about rugby, but
I kind of get to the point where if they
change all the rules and rugby is in a do
him that hight league? So yeah, basically the same game.
So I don't know how how they get the ball
and play more only. I mean there's a lot smarter people.

(09:28):
They know how to do that.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Aiden Fnua Blake, not just him specifically, but that scenario
where he wants out. How do you handle that sort
of thing going forward? You're dealing with, say a young man,
you're offering him a long term contract, and you go,
we're the one for you. For what it a halfway
through the contract he wakes up one morning goes, you
know what I'm not. How do you structure or make
a side where a contract may or may not mean anything.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
I think it's a case by case. I mean, Adam
didn't wake up one morning, so I wanted to go.
He had a real family situation that he needed to
attend to, and you know, he needs to get himself
home next season, and we were really grateful him to
come to a compensation where we could make sure he
stayed for another year. He hasn't had any stage, but

(10:19):
I think he loves the lawyers and he really find
it New zeal But in the case by case, if
the players just wants to leave for no reason and
he just seems to life can get paid more at
other club than I think. We've got to stand your
go around and say, you know, I've signed a contract,
you're staying. I think like you're saying that with the Dragons,

(10:40):
And then he's obviously very important, just wanted to leave
a few times and obviously probably said better opportunity, but
he's made him staying a really good footing. The Dragons
obviously have another good win last night. So I think
it's situational really, But to Adam's credit, he just didn't
wake up one day until I want to hunt.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
I wasn't suggesting you did. I'm just wondering if from
a structural point of view and making a side or
putting a side together, whether the game is changing in
this world whereby suddenly a contract is not a contract.
Let's say, but i'll see how I feel type vibe
and suddenly you don't know where you are.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
Well, the contract is still an absolute contract. So we
could have made out and stay. We're just stilled the outground.
Light like myself as a coach, if I walked in
the moments that I want to leave, which I certainly don't,
David turnarounds and Buddy'll say, so the contract's to emplay.
It's just for you, really, and I don't know if

(11:36):
I'm answering this right for you, but it's just whether
you really think that player playing under vir wrest I'm
not happy, I'll not be your place is worth it
for your culture. And I think that's where everyone kind
of worked out that. Look, he's contracted in, but this
is a business. We can get player X, Y and

(11:56):
Z to replace him and lets you go to player
definitely wants to see. So yeah, it's it is when
you're when you put your salary path together and your
squad and you're hoping they un and it's up to
us to pay culture with happy and I stay. So
it's not it's not the easiest thing when these things happen,

(12:17):
but it's just something you've always got to be across
and on top of.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
And have they done that well for you? You're traveling happily.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Yeah happy, Yeah, oh welcome. Well I'm probably a bit
frustrated at the time that we're not reaching our potential,
but I'm stoked in the cloud. I love it here.
I love New Zealand. I love the players that I
get the coach every day. So family happy, So yeah,
the Warrior. Is this that's for sure? I love it.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Good stuff, good to catch up, make go well, we'll
catch up again before the end of the season. Andrew
Webster worries coaching.
