Another legendary Kiwi band is making a return.

Though we thought they were done in 2020, Th' Dudes are performing a one-off show at Auckland’s Powerstation next month.

They’ve got the blessing of Dave Dobbyn, who isn’t involved, picking up renowned guitarist Brett Adams of the Mockers and the Bads fame instead.

Founding member Peter Urlich told Andrew Dickens that when they played those last songs at Spark Arena in 2020, he was looking around and thinking ‘is this really gonna be the last time we get up on stage and play these songs?’

“There was just this feeling inside me that I thought, oh well, you know, that’s, that’s hard to swallow.”

He said that in the intervening four years they looked at the idea of performing again, and realised the demand was still there.

“I just thought the love was still there, so and of course, we wanted to play.”

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Tex Through. What's with the music choices this morning, guys,
way too early for rock and roll at seven am?
Do we think it's way too early for rock and
roll at seven am, Glen May. For some people, it's
still just the end of the night, exactly right, this
is dinner time. Well, look, there's a reason we're playing

(00:23):
this rock and roll because what we're playing is The Dudes.
This is the Dudes, recorded live two thousand and six,
the Big Farewell Tour. And the reason we're playing The
Dudes live is because the Dudes are coming back. We
all thought they were done in twenty twenty when they
played their supposedly final gig at Spark Arena. The magnificently
named what was it the greatest pub gig in the land,

(00:47):
And it was anyway, it was not. So they're coming back,
performing a one off show at the Power Station in
Aucland next month with the blessing of Dave Dobbin, who
will not be involved, but the lead singer will, and
his name is Peter Arlitch and Pete. It's good to
have you on the show.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Good morning, Andrew. It's good to hear that. It's good
to hear that on the mic costume Breakfast Show. Oh god,
that was so good.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
I mean, did you hear the pounding drums from Lee's
from handling there? Bruce hambling there? I mean, is he
still captu of doing that?

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Honestly? Bruce is still playing. He's in and a couple
of bands down in christ Church and Andrew. In a way,
you can kind of blame Bruce for this. It's nice
to blame somebody else because he's in love with the dudes.
And he would ring me about kind of about every
six weeks, and I'd see the name come up on

(01:39):
the phone like oh no, and then I'd finally pick
come and go home, Bruce, and you go open, have
you heard any news? And I was like no, I
just thought, you know, we might we might be getting
back together. And I go uh and there you go.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
You know what that reminds me of? That reminds you of
Pete Warren better known as Ruder, who's the drummer for
d D Smass And he's always like, Guys, I'm not
doing much at the moment, why don't we have a reunion?
And we've never had a reunion of d D Smash.
But Peter, here's the thing. You said at the biggest
pub gig in the world in twenty twenty, I can't

(02:19):
believe it was so long ago. Either time has flown.
You said this was your final gig, So what the
hell is this new gig about.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
I'm not sure. I said that maybe you could talk
to Brian Nichols promoter. But you know, on a serious note,
people are thinking, you know, when you say that, you
know how much you know, how much credence do you
give it. But the thing was, Andrew, if you can
only imagine in your own head, when we played those

(02:50):
last few songs at the Victor Arena and I'm looking
around and I'm thinking, is this really? Is this really
going to be the last time we get up on
stage and sing these songs? And there was just this
feeling inside me that thought, oh, well, you know, that's
hard to swallow. And so I guess in the intervening

(03:12):
four years, you know, we coughed it up again, and
and you know, we thought that that the demand was
still there. These songs are without a word of a lie. Andrew.
Probably every week someone will send me a handheld video

(03:32):
recording of some act somewhere, some occasion where a dude
song was being bashed out, and you know, I just
thought that the love was still there. So and of
course we wanted to play. And unfortunately it's very sad
that our dear friend Dave, who have nonsense I was ten,

(03:57):
is going to concentrate on his solo stuff. We begged
him to play again, but he said no, we've got
his blessing. He said, go for it. And so you
know we're out there. We're out there again. Of course, yeah,
this is this is the only show we've got. We
don't have anything else.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
As nobody believes that anymore. Mate, I'm telling you a
confirmed liar. I mean, you've got you've got to you've
got a record of lying. We've got an audio of
you like and center. Goodness me, you're like darling Tanna now.
But no, look, here's here's the thing. My silver bullet
question was, sir Dave Dobbin will not be involved in
the concert, and knowing that Dave has has a battle

(04:40):
against Parkinson's, of course, and nobody said what what the
story was about? That you can quite easily presume the worst, Peter,
So so are you saying he had professional requirements to
fulfill as opposed to he couldn't do it.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
I know he's he's still playing, he's still playing with
that incredible report of songs that and but you know,
he's just making sure that the gigs that the Dave
Dobbin gigs that he that he does, you know, you
know he's going to concentrate on that and you know, yeah,
so there's no doubt he will still be on stage

(05:19):
in his own right.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
In the fore future.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Oh absolutely, that's right.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
And there's no doubt that the Dudes will be back
again one more time. But I look Peter, lead singer
of the Dudes, he's my very special sing and porridge.
He's doing the porridge.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
This'm an old school guy.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
This is the lifestyle of the old age pensioner, rock
and roll pensioner.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Got slippers on.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
It's good. It's good because he It was in that
magazine article that came out about a year ago. It's
about you tuning sixty five and all. But you're a
young heart with a young family.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Well, and I just want to keep playing for ever. Andrew,
quite simply, I mean, I am so grateful that for
the last forty six seven years of being a musician,
you know, and made basically made people happy. So that's
what we hope to do on August twenty fourth. And
as you mentioned, you know who comes in on guitar

(06:16):
instead of in the legend and Dave and we've got
the one and only Britt Adams. I don't know if
from the listening public is that aware of Brett, but
he was originally in the Mockers and he has a
wonderful group called the Bads with Diane Swan and he'll
be stepping in on a live Paul and he is

(06:36):
from He's amazing And in fact I had I went
to Dave and I said, Dave, you know we're thinking
of bringing a bread and for them on the other guitar,
and he fully fully endorsed it. He thinks he's quite amazing.
So when you're talking about those solos, just wait until

(06:58):
you hear Brett rip off.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
People will know Brad Adams because he's got a lot
of fame from the Come Together tours which have been
going now and going to Wellington and christ Church, and
he's been able to replicate all the greatest players of
all time and he is I would actually say he
is the greatest gigging guitar player in New Zealand of
the moment right now, I'm sorry today, I'm a man who.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
He's a man who knows his music. Thank you, Andrew.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Anyway, let's talk about more. And we can't have Ian
Morris because of course Ian Morris is not with us anymore,
but we do have his brother.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yeah, and how cool is that because that Ricky as
a seventeen year old was our roady went right back
in the day. And you know, so in a way
he's always been in the fold, and in fact, he
knows more about when he first came into the brand
to replace him. He was he told us that we're
playing a couple of wrong chords, you know, and so

(07:54):
he's kind of it's just wonderful to be able to
look to my right and see him saying because he
he does look a little bit like Ian, so you know,
you know, it's fabulous and of course leaves white on
bass with some great basil you know, just yeah, I'm
starting to rape now.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
But it's okay. He's a tall guy with the big
noses at the back and he's always he's.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Right, all right.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
But by the way, did you know that Ricky is
releasing on August the thirtieth, his first album in twenty
eight years, and he's called the album It's about time.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
It's going a wonderfully right into humor. Okay, so excited,
Thanks so much for the time.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Don't do I get to wrap up the interview, mate.
First of all, somebody has texted it and said, Brett
Adams great, but where is the christ show?

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Oh? Christ Church?

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Yes, they want you to.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Well, you never know, christ Church, you never know.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Another text says goes. Another texts, why was Pete Warren
called ruder? And I thought we wouldn't answer that.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
No, we won't go there, okay.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
And the other one is I think this is important
because you're the writer of the Warriors. Chant asked Pete
asked the peace. If the Eastern Roosters are going to
be there?

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Oh ah, that's my old football team. Yeah, I'm sure
they will be. I'm sure they will be. There's good.
It's it's just like a it's a it's a bit of.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
A reunion, not only for the band but for the
for the fans. And all I'm going to say is please,
we're half sold out on the first dat ticket sales already,
so please, if you want to be there, at now.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Very good, Where go on do someself?

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Ticket Master, ticket Master, very.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Good, dot co, dot mzs hey now the text, Andrew
Peaton and the Dune should sing our national anthem and
the yessue should. But look, it's been lovely having a
chat again, Peter, look after yourself and give my love
to Danielle.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
Thank you, thank you, Andrew. Have a great day.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
By nice a bit rude.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
