There's push back from builders over the Government's enquiries into rolling back insulation standards.

Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk is looking at changing the H1 Energy Efficiency Building Code introduced last year, which aims to reduce energy for heating homes by 40%.

Certified Builders Chief Executive Malcolm Fleming told Mike Hosking the industry has adapted the code.

He says manufacturers have also invested heavily in new plants and machinery, and so removing H1 undoes much of that business investment.

Fleming adds the requirements costs are small for significant long-term gain.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Government are having a look at our insulation rules, so
MB they've been asked to investigate a standard known as
H one. The thinking is the industry is suggesting apparently
current laws lead to overheating, too much insulation, new builds
of fifty thousand dollars more expensive than they need to
be in Z Certified Builders CEO Malcolm Flemings with us
on this Malcolm morning, Good morning here, Mike. What's H
one is fewer pink bats or what.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
H one is a variety of things, But first of all,
Certified Builders support H one stands ventilation and they're all
back which has a bit of proposed would under changes
that are making the building liverpool and sustainable. Where you
can meet with the monster. Recently the offer ways to
reduce building costs were without reversing the most effective components

(00:44):
of attline requirements which are now accepted and adopted by
the construction industry.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Right, so H one's good. We can live with H one.
If we went to H one, we'd save money in
alls well.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
When looking at it costs. It's quite important that I've
been talking to members in the last couple of parts
about this and some of are quite upset one of
them recently told the Glass for examples, in an eighte
hundred and fifty thousand dollars build, which is a live
build in Auckland, there's about ten k of cost association
with H one. Members are typically telling me for standards

(01:21):
house it's in the tens of twenty k. When will
say about forty percent on heading costs. That's a relatively
small upfront investment for significant long term game. I think
it's the point of I hope that significant investment has
been made by government and industry to ensure that builders
were prepared for the H one adoption date in May
twenty twenty three. Manufacturers have also invested heavily, and new

(01:44):
plant for machinery was required to produce window frames to
accommodate firmly efficient class required by the new removing H
one and DOOS. Much of that investment by business.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Okay, So are we heading in the right direction or not?

Speaker 2 (01:59):
I think we're getting the right direction with H one
and our sponsor to Bildlely. Just with the power Powers agreement,
we getting warm homes. A lot of costs to ramos
homes go forward. We're going back to where we were
two three years ago as a backward stamp, and there's
also seems a low confidence from business to government in

(02:22):
regard to we've been asked to produce laps skill and
provide the machinery to be other do all us.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
You don't know where you're at.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
You don't know where we're at.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah, no consistency. I get it, malcolmppreciate it very much.
Malcolm Fleming the New Zealand Certified Builders Operation Morning Mike.
Rates will never go down. Councils do whatever they're like, Andrew,
you're right and you're wrong. Rates only play. Everything's weighted
in the inflation story. So counsel, think about your economy.
Your economy's money comes into the house and money goes
out of the house. How much money goes out of
the house to rates versus money it goes out of

(02:53):
the house to the power bill and the insurance and
your food and you're driving a big car and all
that sort of stuff. So, yes, councils are a problem, yes,
and durance is a problem. But they alone are not
weighted heavily enough to affect the overall economy in a
way that would prevent the resume bank from moving.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
