Analysts question how long a spike in support for Kamala Harris will last.

Today marks the final day of the Democratic National Convention, and when Harris is expected to accept her party's Presidential nomination.

Meanwhile, US media reports independent candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr is planning to end his campaign this week and endorse Donald Trump.

Democratic pollster Mark Mellman told Mike Hosking the convention will undoubtedly help Harris for now.

But he says the country is still divided, and it will be a very close race.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dems wrap it up today in Chicago, nominally accepting the candidacy.
Of course, Tim Wolves did the same thing yesterday. Very
big week in Well for the glitterati and the high hopes.
It's been a full of phiz this campaign, hasn't it.
Under the convention Democratic polster and strategist Mike Melbourne as
well as Mark very good morning to you, Good morning
to you politics aside, I've watched most of it. It's
been fantastic. I mean as an event, as a noise maker,

(00:23):
as a g them up, it's been brilliant, hasn't it.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
It's been an amazing convention. It's been an inspiring convention.
It's a convention. I think it's going to have an
impact on the election ultimately.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
The critics argue that they're running on vibes. Are they
running on vibes and the people vote on vibes?

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Well, I'm not even sure exactly what vibes are all
the time. But the reality is there is an extensive
platform that the Democratic Party passed on the first day
of this convention. There are policy proposals that the Harris
Wild's team is rolling out over the course of the
next number of weeks. So it's much more than just vibes.

(01:05):
There's policy that they're running on, but there's also the
kind of country that we want to live in. There's
big issues like protecting our democracy, protecting our freedom. Those
are big and important issues that don't just have a
particular policy prescription attached to them, but they're critically important
for this country in this election.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
The poll moves, do you believe they're real and they
can stick?

Speaker 2 (01:29):
They're real. On the other hand, you know, we expect
to get a bump from a convention like this. How
long that bump last really depends on what else happens
in the course of this race over the next number
of weeks. This has been a great and inspiring convention,
as I said before, and I think it will have
an impact on the polls and on the vote eventually.

(01:52):
But the reality is that there's lots to happen in
this election. The reality is we are a country that
is very evil and divided, and this is likely to
be a very close race.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
I think that's probably true. Mike, appreciate your expertise, and
in so, Mike Melman out of the Democrats convention in
Chicago will wrap up this afternoon though Clinton was pretty
good at There's some criticism online about Clinton looked a
bit old but shaky. I thought he told a good story.
Same same old, same old. The Obamas haven't changed, Clinton
hasn't changed. For more from the Mic Asking Breakfast listen
