Barry Wilson: Guardians of the Golden Mile Spokesperson on the Wellington City Council's plans to support struggling businesses in the area

There's scepticism around how Wellington City Council can support struggling businesses.  

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau is looking at how the council can help Golden Mile businesses.  

A number of sites in central Wellington have announced closures in recent weeks, many blaming transport changes, public sector cuts, and people working from home. 

Guardians of the Golden Mile Spokesperson Barry Wilson told Mike Hosking the city is in deep trouble, and small bits of help will do nothing. 

He says there's too much disruption, reckless spending, and road cones.

Might be a little bit of help, maybe some light
for beleagued businesses in the capital. The mayor is considering
support for those affected by the Golden Mile construction. Between
the cost of living, the job cuts, employees working from home,
all of that. Downtown is in real trouble, as I'm
sure you're well aware, Guardian of the Golden Miles spokespurs
and Barry Wilson's back. Whether it's very morning to you,
good morning's hold the bait that's going on in Wellington

at the moment, you know, whether it's dying or not.
What's your view?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Generally the players is not dying and we're not in
the rigid waters, but we are in some deep trouble,
pretty more so than your goodhood. No, we've got a
lot of dumb stuff going on, a lot of too
much work, too much disruption, too much mad planning and
too much training around reitnessy and too many raid cones.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Is there any sense of what the council could do
apart from not do the Golden Mile by way of
help for businesses.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
It's basically possible to do. It's just a fantasy of
the mere and various of the people that a Chile
is no, they're cant afford this. I mean when the
interventions in Bond Street and like every a few years ago,
or they're closed off Bond Street that you might require
some majestic power business round fifty percent? Well, how do
you commentate fifty percent? Unless they give over commensation aid numbers,

you've lost. It won't work. Little attitudes and small help
and the small gifts means nothing.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
That's correct. This is a council that's crippled by debt.
They had their credit rating lowered this week by SMP.
How is it they have money, they can spend money.
They don't have saving businesses that are going under because
of the actions that they won't accept are the actions
that are driving the businesses under in the first place.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Good points you make them and said we're singing. Is
that's planners and os on face embarking that. I mean
the left we call them the gray the gray green left,
just business bangers. They have no idea, no background the business,
no idea about money, how to earn it, save it,
guard it, they spend it. There's absolutely reckless pirates.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Really, is there any possibility that the rejing of the
Golden Mile won't happen or are they helping.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Well, I know they help end, but I think we've
got it pretty much cut out of the pass. I
mean they've changed so many things that it's really meant
that they're defying Minister's peer words. I mean they're taking
away two critical boat stops they say they can't replace
and put back leats is done, because that would be
a positive just finally to do the positives. But the
biggest thing we found out this is the news of today.

Read what the news recently. Marris Orders, a very leaning journalist,
found us out. We have a Waker Katahi board a
minute or a brief from Brett Ginnon and Robin Elston
to the board which says that the Golden Mile has
business support. That was absolute falsehood. And so we're saying
now that the border of Walker Kadahi to end to

borrow of the one three nine million was based on
a falsehood by officers. And that's when with Walker Caday,
all these people are walking in lockstip with the council
officers through a whole bend on Miss Looney Golden Mile.
They care a revitalization, it's a ruin.

Barry Wilson, Guardian into the Golden Mile. The State of
Homebrigade aren't helping as well. I wonder whether there's some
sort of role for the government, and that Shane Jones,
by the way, who's sort of tied up his associate
Energy Minister and regional Minister. He'll be with us after
seven on the Windstone thing. But Wellington in terms of
people being at home, has been an ongoing problem of course.
