The ongoing US federal government shutdown could stop many Americans returning home for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

The shutdown's now the longest in US history.

Thousands of air traffic controllers and security screeners aren't being paid for their work, prompting a sharp drop in flights across the country.

US Correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking that more than 5000 flights around the country were delayed in the past 24 hours.

He says air traffic controllers are reportedly resigning every day due to the prolonged nature of the shutdowns.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back to the White House. Thank you for that. David
Rix is your man from Eli Lilly. He's not the
one who falls over, but he's talking when somebody does.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
My company, Lily has been investing in America. We've been
advancing science and creating high value jobs. But today we're
in Okay.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Yeah, we believe it's somebody from the Department of Health
and Human Services. More interestingly, perhaps Trumpton help and RFK
left the room, perhaps to go get help. Richard Arnold's
with us, morning.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Mate, Good morning, Mike. We still don't have a name
on this person who fainted. It was a young girl,
seemed to be early teenage years. This took place during
the swearing in of Dr oz Has, head of the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. As I say, unclear
who this person was, and reporters immediately were escorted out

(01:04):
of the room.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
All right, So what we know in midst all of this,
of course, an interesting announcement on the Glplease, But apart
from meeting, the shutdown continues, of course and catching the
plan's becoming out and heart we are now.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Into record territory day thirty seven. There's never been anything
like this in this country. One of the areas worst
hit is, as you say, the airports. From tomorrow, they're
going to start cutting back commercial air traffic by up
to ten percent at many busy airports, about the forty
of them for safety reasons. Already, it is as you
can expect, mayhem, more than five thousand flights around this

(01:35):
country we're delayed over the past twenty four hours. Trump's
Transport Secretary Sean Duffy says it is going to get worse.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
You're going to have more significant disruptions in the airspace.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
And as we come into Thanks Kevin, if we're still
in the shutdown pasture, it's going to be raph up there.
People at the major airports say, you have to wait
in some places for hours simply to get through security check.
So have fun. Then comes all the chaos over delayed
and can flights. Passengers very upset. I think the shutdown's ridiculous. Yesterday,

(02:05):
of four legs that he had to fly, two of
those four were counseled well. Their traffic controllers union says
close to a tipping point. Union chief Nick Daniels says
controllers have been facing unusual pressures for a while because
they were short staffed by about three to four thousand
people when this shutdown began. Now they're just getting their
second round of paychecks with zero dollars listed. Nick Daniels

(02:27):
says he's hearing from controllers all sorts of crisis situations,
family difficulties, or even down to having enough money to
buy petrol to get to work. Controllers are resigning every
day now because of the prolonged nature of that's shutdown. Yeah,
there's talk on Capitol Hill that maybe there can be
some sort of compromise. There are supposed to be intense discussions,
they say. Democrat Jean Jaheen is saying talks.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Continue to be productive and he helped Leen.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
You can get to a resolution. Well, that's one Democratic
Party Viewhile. Senator Richard Blumenthal says any suggestion of some
half bank agreement, as he calls it, to consider health
insurance issues in a separate vote sometime is simply a
non starter.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Settling for some kind of vague promise about a vote
in the future and some indeterminate bill without any definite
inclusion in the law, I think is a mistake.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
So pressure is spiraling by the day. Mike, no dealers yet.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Tell me how the engine falls off a plane.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, it's a good question. I don't know as yet,
but shocking to see, wasn't for those who view that
awful video of the ups cargo plane in flames and
then crashing at the airport at Louisville in Kentucky, which
is one of the main centers for the United Parcel Services.
The mid flight explosion killed the three people on the
jet and at least nine people on the ground, destroyed
business and buildings nearby the whold of Breepfield. It's just huge.

(03:47):
They're now saying nine people still are missing. Nine bodies
in the mangled wreckage for July. They found the black boxes,
which is remarkable given how hot the fires were. An
initial focus will be that very point, how does the
left engine come up off the wing in that way
before the cargo plane crash. Kentucky's Governor Annie Basher has
viewed the crash site. Now, what this scene is is violent.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
We do not expect to find anyone else alive.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Well, the plane was thirty four years old. It had
just come through an inspection.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Those flight recorders now being sent off to a lab
in Washington.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
All right, good weekend. See you on Monday. Appreciate it
very much. Richard Donald state, so I goodon Finlay. Was
your man nober Nordisk executive as the bloke who fell?
I've obviously no one knows who it is, but just
to round out our coverage.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
