The Government's move to shift e-scooter users from the sidewalk to bike lanes is being hailed as a win for common-sense.

ACC statistics for e-scooter injuries this year are close to surpassing $14 million.

There were also more than two thousand claims for e-scooter related injuries in the first half of this year.

Flamingo Scooters Co-Creator Jacksen Love told Mike Hosking it clears up confusion.

He says bike lanes are clearly a lot safer than the road and helps keep footpaths clear for pedestrians.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
E scooters are still the thing. Acc claims have now
hit fourteen million this for the year so far. That's
up from say, six million five years ago. So the
government is looking to move the EA scooters into cycle
lanes now. Jackson Love is the co creator of Flamingo
scooters and is with us Jackson.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Morning, Good morning, Mike. Are you going very well?

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Indeed, your ones are the purple ones? Is flaming to
the purple ones?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Where the pink ones?

Speaker 1 (00:20):
The pink ones?

Speaker 2 (00:21):
My apology the key, We owned ones, the key.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
That's what we want. We want some patriotism. Just give
us a quick insight into the market. Is the market
uses all that sort of stuff? Is it still growing
or is it settled or what?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah? No, absolutely, from our perspective, it's going so yeah,
good uptake, good increase. And what we're seeing is usage
moved to more genuine mode shurts, so much more travel
on the weekdays supposed recreationally on the weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Ah. That's interesting because I was going to say the opposite,
but you would know more than I. I'm just seeing
a bunch of people wandering around aimlessly, So you would
say the last mile thing is a thing now.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Absolutely yep, and seeing them replace those short distance car
journeys as well.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
So if you put these things in bike lanes or
cycle lanes, you're going to need the lanes in the
first place. So how are you going to handle that?
I mean, how would that rule work if you don't
have a cycle line.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Well, I think, yeah, we're pretty lucky at the moment
that scooters can be used on both footpaths or on
the road. We see sort of our earlier adopters wanting
a comfortable location or sort of a you know, an
introduction on the footpath, and then our more experienced riders
on the road. And I think just adding the cycle

(01:31):
paths or the cycle lanes makes a lot of sense,
you know, clear up confusion, and it's just a wind
for common sense and for both riders.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
And people would welcome it, you would argue as opposed
to going, well, hold on, the more rules there are,
the less likely I am to use an these scooter
if someone's going to ping me.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, exactly, well, exactly right. I think it's adding an
extra option, And like you say, biplanes definitely offer a
safer environment than the road, but also help keep footpaths
clear and more comfortable for pedestrians.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Do you guys do the sit down version, like with
the seat where you sit down, do you do that?

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, we have some of the sit down versions. They
prove pretty popular for the slightly longer journeys and potentially
increase accessibility for those who can't stand for long periods,
but not so much in winter. Mike, no one wants
a wet bum.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
That is the truth. That is the truth. The best
quote of the morning so far. It is only seven
to twenty, but no one wants a wet bump and
you can't argue with that sort of logic. Jackson Love
who's the co creator of Flamingo, and they are the
pink ones, not the purple ones.
