Oliver Peterson: Australian correspondent on the incident that locked down an Adelaide mall

Two teens have been arrested after they got into a brawl at a mall in Adelaide.

Police received reports of two groups of young males fighting in the food court and some people in the group were allegedly carrying weapons.

Australian correspondent Murray Olds says the alert locking down the mall was reminiscent of the recent attack at Bondi Junction.

No we din't, but goodness gracious, for a number of
hours yesterday afternoon it was chaos. And that's an understatement
because there was a scuffle that broke out in the
food court. Then all of a sudden, on the big screens,
upflash this message attention armed offender, and the entire shopping
center went into lockdown. You saw people obviously running as
quickly as they could out of the shopping center if

they could leave it all. And this was just echoes
of Bondi. I have listened here to the local mayor,
Chris Hannah on the situation.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Everybody would have had in mind the title shooting at
Bondi Junction just a short while ago. So when they
flashed up on screens in them all armed offender, I'm
sure thousands of people probably thought the worst and that's
why there was such high anxiety and indeed panic in

some cases.

So that's the mayor and marian So two teams have
been arrested after that brawl in the middle of the
shopping center. It was in the food courts and it
was a couple of groups of young men involved in this,
so thank goodness, it was not what we saw in Bondi. Obviously,
head you can understand that you go to that length
of a reaction where you put the place into lockdown
and you put those flashing messages up on the screens,

but certainly a very hairy situation for everybody involved, just
going about their business on a Sunday afternoon.

So the government's really quite serious about having a crack
at the supermarkets, by the sounds of things.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
As they say they are, and they could be finding
these two big major plays ten percent of their turnovers.
So we're talking here about three and five billion dollar
fines respectively of Woolworths and Coals. That's if the big
stick can be used to prove that they are ripping
off their supplies. And that's still if you like the
big asterisk I put in that. I'm not doubting the

fact that the coach should be mandatory because it was
a voluntary code beforehand. And you heard Murray what say
there in the world wise, the federal Agriculture Ministry, you've
got small supplies who don't want to speak up because
they're worried if they do speak up coals and will
you say see you later, We're not going to do
business with you anymore. Now, wagh that up? Because now,
sure you might blow the whistle and say, oh, we've
been ripped off here. But yes, the company might get

fined three billion dollars five billion dollars for a big
wake up call, but are they really going to turn
around to still do business with you? Heather? I just
I like the idea that the policy has changed absolutely,
but I'm still very cynical about whether or not this
is going to work.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Yeah, too right to be cynical. I think we should
all be a little bit cynical about it. But let's
have a look at it day and listen. Is there
a bit of a panic with you people about the
eggs at the moment? Oh?

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah, because we've got now about half a dozen different farms,
particularly in New south I was in Victoria that bird
flu's been detected and a lot of these birds are
being obviously destroyed as a result of this. So there's
a bit of panic buying going on, particularly in Sydney,
so it might not just be about the fact that
mandatory codes coming into the supermarkets. They're just signed to
stock up on eggs. We're being told to calm the farm,

pardon the pun, and to not worry about the fact
that the bird flu has obviously infected some of the
shortages in eggs supply at the moment, but chickens that
are still for sale at the moment in supermarket, no
problem there. Biosecurity is working over time. But of course
people hear bird flu they think there's going to be
a shortage of eggs, instead of listening to the message
and saying, oh, just buy them a normal eggs you

know supply, I'm going to go and buy fifty cartons
of eggs because bacon.

Cake exactly yep, for the first time in ten years,
